Heyyoo! I was watching you guys play Persona 5 Strikers on Twitch today and it got me thinking about how much a great soundtrack can really elevate a title. And THAT got me thinking about THIS: Have you ever played a game with great music and few to zero other redeeming qualities? The first one that comes to mind for me is a little game called Chicken Assassin - the music is absolute fire, but the rest of the game is an absolute garbage fire. Is there a game you can remember where the only thing you liked about it was the music? If you can't think of a game maybe a movie soundtrack? (the soundtrack from the 1998 Godzilla movie with Matthew Broderick is amazing!)

A regular hello to anybody that doesn't own a bidet and a special Hello! to everybody that does own a bidet, which I think might just be Leo? I just got a bidet, and I kind of want to tell everybody about how awesome it is. Is this how vegans feel? Have you ever gotten something new and really wanted to tell people how awesome it is, but you felt awkward about being "that person" that doesn't shut up about it? Thanks, Nick from Atlanta

Hi Minnmax, Two weeks ago I got a refurbished Nintendo Switch and I am already experiencing Joy Con drift. I have to spend $40 to replace the left controller. Is it too cynical to think that Nintendo purposefully made bad controllers so that customers need to replace them? I heard that the new PS5 is also experiencing similar issues. Why are these companies making bad controllers? Given that they are being sued, and it makes their customers unhappy, wouldn't they get the hint that it is bad for business?

Joshua Wiljanen

Hello Ben and the boys. Do y'all have comfort blanket games, shows, or movies? When I'm feeling down I'll often play Limbo or watch Community. I think I may have to add Watch Later to the mix.

Thom Blackburn

Hi Suriel, Can you speak on the value of singleplayer in fighting games? Thanks! Thom

Hey MinnMaxers, With all these movie and tv projects based on games being announced. I want to know what is your favorite movie or tv show based on a video game, and what are you looking forward to? I’m looking forward to the new Mortal Kombat and Doom (2005) is a guilty pleasure of mine.

MyNameIsDan

Hey friends, What do you think is more likely to happen first? Nintendo releases a "pro" version of the switch, or Nintendo releases their next console? Keep in mind, the switch is about to be 4-years-old (March 3). Thanks, Dan

Hi, everyone. The Jurassic Park movie is PEAK dinosaur movie. Nothing has topped it, nothing ever will. Is there a game type that peaked with it's first go around? Have you seen my young hands?

Mike

With Dan Ryckert's recent discussion about his love of the N64 controller, but more specifically the idea that its D-pad was underutilized outside of wrestling games, are you aware of any games which required the player to use the middle and left grips ("Right Position" as per the manual)?: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/1556835/Nintendo-64.html?page=7#manual I can't think of any games which did, or even would, require it. Also, on a related note, the Z-button--revolutionary first button on the back of the controller (pre-dating the Xbox Elite), or modified shoulder button? Baderati on the Discord

With the announcement from Playstation that Ratchet and Clank 2016 will be available for free next month ahead of Rift Apart's release, what are your histories with the franchise? Which ones did you play and what do you like or dislike about them?

In light of last week's reveal that Pyra and Mythra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will be joining Smash Bros, I've prepared a game celebrating their developers, Monolith Soft. For each of the following 10 games, I want you to tell me Yes or No, if Monolith Soft was involved in the game's development (according to Wikipedia): 1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Yes) 2. Fire Emblem Three Houses (No) 3. Pikmin 3 (Yes) 4. Pokemon Sword and Shield (No) 5. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Yes) 6. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (Yes) 7. Splatoon 2 (Yes) 8. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Yes) 9. Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Yes) 10. Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII (Yes) So hopefully, this list will help some people to understand what a boon Monolith Soft has been for Nintendo, and why they deserve to have characters from their pet franchise represented in Smash!

Hey Everyone, I've been replaying (and adoring) Super Mario 3D World all over again with the Switch port. I made my way to the final level in the game, Champion's Road for the second time. This time, I was determined to beat it as I didn't on the Wii U version. It was incredibly difficult for me back in 2014 and was still incredibly difficult for me in 2021. I am dead serious when I say this, it took me 650+ lives to beat it with all of the characters in the game. My question is, what is the most difficult challenge/level you've faced in a video game AND did you beat it? Thank you guys for all you do! :D

Colton Westbrooks

Hello CLCs, I have been going through Final Fantasy games over the last year or so. Other than playing Lost Odyssey a few years ago, this is my first deep dive back into JRPGs since playing through Chrono Cross and Legend of Dragoon back on the PS1 and Super Mario RPG on the SNES. Throughout this process I have been reminded of the fondness I held for this genre and how instrumental those aforementioned games were in forming my early gaming history. My question for you is, what games or genres do you identify as the foundational building blocks of your personal gaming history? Are those games/genres still important to you today, or have your interests changed over time?

Greg Lovell

Hi Ben and cohorts! I'm playing Miles Morales and there's a perfect version of Everybody Needs Somebody to Love played at a family scene. Made me think - what are the best "real world" songs in games? I don't mean the "you have a radio in your car" stuff, but those songs that are integral to the game and work perfectly in context. Any favourites? Thanks, Greg.

Joe Kafchinski

You are playing an open world game. You pull up the map screen. There is an arrow on the map indicating the player character. Which way is the arrow facing: the same direction as the camera or the same direction as the character?

Geoff Bond

Hey everyone, I was just wondering what your overall thoughts on Overwatch 2 were. Maybe I'm just a cynical jerk, but I feel like the game has a copious amount of new highly superficial game modes and features, but doesn't have a coherent or a decisive vision. It reminds me of a bunch of Half-Life mods but shoved into a retail game. I don't know guys, personally I'm more concerned than excited for the future of this franchise and Blizzard as a whole.' What are your thoughts? PS: The railgun looks cool. But probably too cool, so they'll nerf it and it will suck.

Doreen Ford

Hey CLCs! What's your favorite random historical fact? Something you think that other people may not know or just something you find funny!

Barry Barrison

No question, just wanted to say the announcement of PSVR 2 is the biggest news in a long time for VR fans so hoping it gets talked about it a good amount with Kyle and Leo.

Fenrir

Hello Ben and the CLCs, This past Sunday marked the 35th anniversary of the Japanese release of the Legend of Zelda, and on that note I have a hypothetical for you: Imagine that you have been given a blank check to throw the anniversary celebration of the game franchise of your choice. Which franchise is it? What anniversary year are you celebrating? And (most importantly) what does your celebration entail?

Thomas Deranek

Hi MinnMax! I came up with a fun thought experiment while listening to Ben and Leo's Valheim Pal-time. The name of the game is ... "Ten Years before TenCent ........ or Embracer Group"! Below is a list of 10 prominent video game makers. We all know that these two companies are going to eventually own every video game maker. I want you to guess which publishers/studios will be able to make it 10 years before being bought by one of these groups. 1. Blizzard (being purchased out from Activision) 2. Bungie 3. EA 4. Nintendo 5. Microsoft 6. Sony 7. Bandai Namco 8. 505 Games 9. Paradox Interactive 10. Annapurna Interactive Also, I just got my first Sony system in years and finally got to play through FF7R alongside your Deepest Dive. It was a lot of fun - my favorite Deepest Dive yet! I just wanted to thank y'all for putting that together. Thanks for the show! Thomas Deranek from Kansas City, KS P.S. I was expecting Roche to have a MUCH larger presence in the remake because of all the Roche chants. He was barely in it! Still, I can't deny that he was the best character in gaming from the last console generation. Roche! Roche! Roche! Roche! Roche!

What videogame sound byte hits you with the most nostalgia? Mine will forever be the Great Fairy Fountain Theme from Ocarina of Time. It's like a warm blanket of sound telling me it loves me. https://youtu.be/nItB2OMJDZc

Brady Easter

Hey Minn Maxers, I just finished reading the "John Dies at the End" trilogy of books from David Wong (they're awesome, go read them) and was hungry from more from that author so I picked up his sci-fi book "Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits." I'm a few chapters in and it seems like a lot of the story is going to take place in a technologically advanced city with no laws that's run by the rich. Because of that, even though I haven't played the game (yet), in my head everything in this completely unrelated story looks like Night City from Cyberpunk 2077. So I was wondering, have you all ever had a video game influence how you perceive or consume a totally different form of media? You guys are awesome. Be good. Have fun. Let's go. ~Brady Easter Edmond, OK

Hello cohorts! I recently finished my yearly playthrough of Ocarina of Time. Something dawned on me as I played this year, there's a day/night cycle in the game. I've played it numerous times, have 194 hours in the 3ds version of the game, and I was like "holy lord that's wild." My question is, what's an understated game mechanic that you've noticed in repeat playthroughs of your favorite games?

Jeramy Dubose

Hey MinnMax! How’s everyone doing? My question for y’all, what was the first game that sparked your interest in video games? For me, it was seeing a friend’s dad play FF8 and literally blowing my mind as a kid, and forcing my dad to buy my family a PS1. Hope all is well!! Take care!

Donnie

Hey friends! I just finished my first play through of Dark Souls 3! I started and stopped in 2019 and didn’t pick it back up until a few months ago. It was a wild, challenging ride with truly absurd expectations of the player. I can’t wait to play it again. What’s the longest you’ve taken to finish a game?

Shawn Mills

Polygon posted a great article this week about a cancelled Monkey Island movie from 2001 that was supposed to be produced by Steven Spielberg. This got me thinking, is there an adventure game from the 90s that could work as a movie or TV show today?

Kees ('Case') Mulder

Because of the recent fantastic Tim Longo interview, I've picked up and finished Tomb Raider 2013. At some point in the game, Lara rummages through a deceased pilot's pockets, and finds a lighter. For whatever reason, I immediately thought 'that lighter is going to give me fire arrows'. And lo and behold, it did! But if you think about it, this makes absolutely zero sense. Hours earlier I had already gained an automatic way to light a torch, but also, how will she use a lighter to light a normal arrow on fire in the heat of battle? I find it interesting however, that somehow video games have trained me to immediately understand this silly video game logic. My question is: what's your favorite bit of silly video game logic?

Robert Key

Hello, MinnMax crew! Robert (aka Robbie) Key here, Game Informer's best ex intern, according to my Mom! I need some advice for my upcoming game room! My girlfriend and I are in the beginning stages of building a house and should be moved in this year. We have a blueprint designed, and I'll have my very own 16 by 16 foot game room, something I've dreamt of having since I was a kid! I'm hugely into collecting, and am probably most excited about displaying everything in my collection of Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation goodies. What's MinnMax's advice/recommendations on furniture (specifically seating), room layout, lighting, etc., for a game room? Game room do's and don't's? Things you thought of in hindsight after setting everything up in your game space? Anything helps! Keep up all ass-kicking work, and thank y'all for keeping me entertained and informed during my almost-daily, 90-minute commutes to and from my two jobs!

Adam Cohen

Hey MinnMax crew! So, a few nights ago, it's about 130 am, I'm bottle feeding my 5 month old son and listening to the MinnMax podcast to help keep me awake. As I'm rocking him back to sleep in my arms, about to put him back in his crib, I hear through my earbud, "SUCKIN' ON A CHILI DOG, SUCKIN' ON A CHILI DOG!" I had to bite my lip to keep from bursting out laughing. I was holding my son in both hands, so I couldn't pause it, and as the song went on, and I heard your reactions to it, it just kept getting funnier and not being able to laugh made it even funnier. Luckily I was able to overcome it and get him back down without waking him up, but it was close. So my question is this, do you have any stories about a time when something was very funny but you couldn't laugh because of circumstance?

JakeTwitchin

Yo cohorts! Short and sweet- what is your favorite video game accessory of all time? Mine pick has to go to the Gameboy Color worm light- look this thing up if you don’t know what it is. Back before backlit screens, it was priceless

Cody Hester

Dear MinnMax, Why is the Playstation 5 user interface so bad? I was trying to play some Destruction All Stars with my sister and we literally had to look up a video on how we could add each other as friends. It is very unintuitive and a mess of menus. Also, the controller microphone/speaker chat is basically useless. It is a cool idea though. Do you have any experience with getting lost in systems looking for something on a console? Perhaps changing your printer settings with your Playstation 3? Cody from West Des Moines. P.S. Pass along my regards to Kyle for the Little Nightmares interview. It is a great listen.

Kyle Silva

Hey MinnMax. Let's talk about user-made creations and the games that give them those tools. Can a user-made creation be so good that it can possibly be nominated for Game of the Year? Is there any game like Dreams or RPGMaker that can give users the tools to possibly make a GOTY? Does the main game itself just get all the credit instead? And let's say there was a user-made creation that was more compelling and awe-inspiring than any game released in 2021. At the End-of-Year-Debates, does it go under your "Two 10's" or does it get thrown under "Best Thing?" I'd love to hear some responses.

Adam_CW

Hey, why does the minnmax instagram account follow greta gerwig?

Mitch

Hidey Ho crew! What is a game that has a Metacritic score you fervently disagree with? Whether too high, too low, or too mediocre, what is the hill you die on? You all rock!

Terry Pierson

What is the best most random game you have stumbled on while doom scrolling the Switch eshop?

YARF

SO... You have to fight in one of these situations, what do you choose? 1.) You have to fight a buck, alpha, silver back gorilla, but you get a fire axe. 2.) You have to fight an absolutely JACKED kangaroo, but you get boxing gloves. 3.) You have to fight an adrenaline fueled, fury blinded hippopotamus, but you get a shotgun with two shells of birdshot (basically for hunting pigeons). Abstract: I told my buddies, you have to go gorilla because though they are strong, they’re basically humans that die super easy from trauma. You land that axe? You win... Hippo? No way that shotgun takes it out, maybe not even if you get him in the mouth... MAYBE if you get it in an eye ball...? just seems horrific and no chance as it chases you at 30 miles per hour while weighing 4,000 pounds... would you fight a car traveling 30mph with a shotgun? No. kangaroo? Basically impossible, it is going to slice you open like a raptor and split your face open with one hit, no way with most people’s fighting ability that anything but death happens. No running, this is a 50 yard by 50 yard arena, cage match, only with death does anyone walk away and the animal is going to try fighting to the death.

Joshua Caleb

Hey Cohort Loving Computers, so Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines 2 has been indefinitely delayed after three of the creative leads were let go/left and now the lead development studio has been let go as well. Is the Vampire franchise just cursed? The first game suffered under extraordinary development hell and now the long awaited sequel is on the same track. Are there any other games or franchises that just seem inexplicably cursed?

Jackson Arnold

Hey y'all, I know this show usually keeps it pretty game-positive, but there's been something on my mind for years that I can't seem to escape. Who actually plays Oddworld? Why does Sony care so much about it? Does Lorne Lanning have dirt on Jim Ryan??? And one more thing... Does anyone actually like MediEvil? They did a terrific job remaking the original for the PS4, but the unfortunate thing is that it is bad. I know that I can't be alone in my thoughts. So my question is, what game, franchise, etc. do you simply just not get? There's one thing for a game to not be for you, but which do you flat out just not understand the admiration or fandom for? This is a safe space, I need some spicy hot takes. Catch you on the flipside fellas

MLA

Good day everyone! Do you guys wash your dishes before putting them in a dishwasher? I am of the opinion that it's the dishwashers job to remove food from dishes, however I am scolded by my partner if she sees so much as a grain of rice go in there. Help!

Jason Wojnar

I had an idea for a one year Moratorium on new game releases every 10 years. I think it would be great to help people catch up on their backlogs and let us all appreciate the medium a little more instead of just getting caught up in a cycle of new releases. Of course, we would subsidize all the developers and other parts of the industry that rely on games coming out. Would you be down for this?

Hootz

Hello brochachos. I can not stop playing Hades. I have rolled the true credits of the game, and while obviously there’s still plenty to unlock beyond that, there’s also no denying that I’m doing the same stuff over and over again. Despite this, I can’t put the game down. I’m afraid that my backlog, like Zagreus, is doomed to remain in the underworld forever. My question is this: have you ever been hooked on a game like this? If so, what did it finally take to break the cycle?

Eric Holm

What is the MinnMax outlook on Beyond Good and Evil 2? Ubisoft promised to show gameplay this year, is there any excitement among the crew for what that game will look like? Thanks and keep up the good work

Tanner Hoisington

Howdy Cohorts, There is a bit of a stigma on talking about romantic options in video games. I myself feel odd about it at times, but thinking about it I remember how normal this is in TV and film. Think Twilight, Gilmore Girls, Harry Potter... Little Women? Anyways here are some games with notable love triangles or romantic options. Who in these groups are your favorites? - Mass Effect: Liara, Tali, Garrus - FFVII: Tifa, Aerith, Yuffie - Persona 5: Ann, Makoto, Kasumi - Witcher 3: Yennifer, Triss, Kiera - Catherine: Katherine, Catherine, Qatherine - Uncharted: Chloe, Elena, Sully - Stardew Valley: Leah, Abigail, Penny

Hey Ben and friends Diablo 2 Resurrected being announced at blizzcon is genuinely one of my top gaming wishes come true. I have been playing the Diablo franchise since 1998 (I was 9yo lol) and have put hundreds of hours into all 3 games and even read a couple of the novels. D2 is one of my favorite games of all time and it was long thought that a remaster would literally be impossible, or so far removed from the original charm of the game that fans wouldn't want it. I would love to hear any insight the panel has on vicarious visions or how they think VV even got the chance to work on d2 ressurected

CrabPalace

For me, a good boss fight has a sense of scale, challenge, and something we haven't seen yet in the game. But even the most memorable bosses can be tedious and repetitive. How do you make bosses fun?

Cole Helgerson

Hey MinnMaxers, With the dawn of an Xbox event coming in tandem with the Bethesda acquisition, what is your guys' personal hope for the event in terms of software announced or console exclusivity? Starfield game only for Xbox? Morrowind remaster headed to Game Pass? What do you think? Thanks for the great show each and every week!

Claudi

Hey cohorts, Jason Schreier just reported that Anthem Next has officially been cancelled, and that the developers are being moved to work on Dragon Age 4. This follows up on his earlier reporting about EA execs meeting to discuss the future of the Anthem reboot earlier this month. Seeing as this is basically closing the book on Anthem, do you guys have any reflections on the game? Your experiences playing it, your hopes after seeing that first E3 trailer, perhaps even thoughts you have on how they could have addressed any of the issues in the base game? Thanks in advance 🙂 EDIT: adding link to tweet with article in it https://twitter.com/jasonschreier/status/1364662152318115848?s=19 And also blog post from Bioware https://blog.bioware.com/2021/02/24/anthem-update/

Jake

What game’s box art makes you want to turn the sands of time back and redo the cover? For me it’s Mario Kart Wii... It really kills me that Mario and Luigi are driving invisible karts WITH the systems hardware in their hand! I see what Nintendo was going for but like a dog its ruff. (To me at least)
