Have you played a game that you thought was just OK but it was worth finishing for the end? What was the game?

Hi MinnPunks,
Following Noah Cadwell-Gervais’s and Luke Stephens’s Cyberpunk videos (from this past week) and having a bit of distance from the launch fiasco it feels like Cyberpunk may not get a happy ending after all even after the patches. Beyond the bugs and the PR mess, the consensus seems to be that at its core the game is hollow, undercooked, and does not pick a lane when it comes to the game it wanted to be. Unlike Fallout 76 or NMS, there isn’t really a way to salvage what isn’t there, as Noah Caldwell put it, you can’t patch in imagination. Do you think that there will be a Cyberpunk 2 to redeem themselves of the first game and beyond returning to the Witcher what else could they do atone for their mistakes. Thank you. Christian Jimenez

Hey Ben and the rest of the crew, hope all is going well. With the announcement of Pringles making Moa burger flavoured crisps based on the Halo bird what is another snack you'd like to try from another game?

Brady Griffith

Hey, MinnMaximoffs (everyone should watch WandaVision)! Assuming you all listen to video game or orchestral soundtracks, what are the specific tracks that you always come back to, whether they pump you up, fill you with nostalgia, or give you chills. The swelling strings and beating drums of Flight from Man of Steel has made me feel like Superman during workouts. When I want something more somber when I'm reading, Castaways from Outer Wilds is the first track I start from the album.

Hey Everyone! This isn't much of a question as it is more of a PSA. I recently got a PS5 and the first game I played outside of Astro's Playroom was Sackboy: A Big Adventure! I absolutely ADORE this game! If you have a PS4/PS5, please please please buy this masterpiece of a platformer and play it! I desperately want a sequel! It's got fun imaginative levels, tight platforming, intense challenge later on in the game, wonderful co-op, and a banging soundtrack! Please SUPPORT this game! Thank you! Love everything you guys do! Take care and stay safe!

Joe Kafchinski

Following up on the success of WandaVision, what supporting characters from any game would you like to see get their own TV show? Personally, I would love a travelling misadventures series featuring Nigel West-Dickens, the snake oil salesman from Red Dead Redemption.

Thoughts on THE WARRIORS game by R*?

Sup Minnmax crew, Is 2021 the year for old video games? With the combination of Covid still being a problem and the gigantic semiconductor shortage worldwide, new consoles and GPUs are next to impossible to get your hands on. God knows I’ve tried. And it seems like we’re past the point where the games that were almost finished being developed have come out. All those factors combined could be a perfect storm to be one of the slowest new game years in a very long time. I was thinking about it the other day and other than Valheim, the most recent game I’ve played is Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. But I’ve played a ton of older games that I never got to check out during the PS1 and GameCube era. Would love to hear your thoughts. XOXO, Jason Kelley

Heya fellas! I recently have had a lot of free time due to being laid off and have been tackling my backlog while job hunting. Finally beat Chrono Cross after owning the game for15+ years (would make a fascinating game club game by the way)and am working my way through the first Ni No Kuni. After playing these two with fantastic world maps I'm curious why the world map has pretty much been killed off? It's one of my favorite feelings in gaming when you get through the first dungeon or town and get to step out into the world and see just how small you are and how much there is to explore. Do you think they'll ever come back?

PhillyYeetSteak

Hello Suriel and Leo, With Elden Ring back in the news because of some leaks, people are talking about the souls games again. I am currently playing through Jedi Fallen Order for the first time, and while it isnt anywhere near as demanding as the souls games, it does offer multiple difficulties. I have heard arguments regarding sekiro and such that having an "easy mode" would eliminate the point of the game. My question is, do you think jedi fallen order was a worse game because it offered an easier difficulty? I personally would give more of From's games a shot if there were other difficulty options. But maybe im a big baby gamer.

Similar Games? Hitman & Outer Wilds. Immortals & Mario Odyssey. Are there any games that you think are actually comparable based on their overall design, despite the general discourse on moment-to-moment gameplay and "genre"? I feel like sometimes game discussion can group certain games into a certain genre, without actually considering their design decisions or ways they motivate and satisfy the player. I always consider this when i ask myself "What do I ACTUALLY enjoy about this game". To use my 2 examples: Hitman & Outer Wilds: Both are focused on exploring an area and finding "intel" or general knowledge and then returning and repeating the area with your new information. The reward is discovering something on your own and feeling like you succeeding when you properly implemented your ideas. Immortals & Mario Odyssey: Both have the player exploring a large open area where you can go anywhere but are still somewhat directed by minimal story. As the player discover challenges, they use platforming, or minor puzzle solving in the world to obtain the reward (Moons or Currency). From your Central Time Zone pal in Manitoba, Doug

Hello Jabronies I loved the movie talk a few weeks ago. I used to manage a small art house theatre and one question I always asked new employees would be the same question I'm going to ask you all. In High School what was the few movies you HAD to see before you could call yourself "deep" "artist" or "cool"? At my high school it was Requiem for a Dream, A Clockwork Orange and Pulp Fiction. A 2011 graduate told me Ameile, Zeitgeist The Movie and Pulp Fiction. Someone who graduated in 2019 told me Wolf of Wall Street, Drive and Pulp Fiction. Love the show keep up the good work and once everyone can see a movie safely in theatres please support your local art house theatre. -Old Dad Hands.

Hey guys! Not sure if this has been asked but how do you guys feel about the current state of Pokémon cards? I think its pretty wild. I never imagined all the cards i had as a kid could potentially be worth 5-6 digits! Do you guys still have yours’ from when you were a kid? Did you see this coming?

Hey all, In the last year League of Legends has added an occasional weekend tournament mode called Clash, and it's some of the most fun I've ever had with a multiplayer mode. You sign up with your team of 5 and are given a Lock In time, and are then sorted into an 8 team tournament bracket. You can set a team name and logo that are displayed on the UI during the matches, and can scout out the other teams to ban their players' best characters and plan strategies. You then play out the bracket and are given rewards at the end in the form of skins, team logos, etc. It's incredible how the format change makes my friends and I take it way more seriously and play better than we do on any given weeknight, and it's been an absolute blast. My question is what is a limited time or event mode in a multiplayer game that you've loved or has changed the way you play? Thanks! John from Chicago

Ben Shively

What is the most interesting bonus mode in a video game? For me, the final unlockable mode for Resident Evil Remake is invisible enemy mode, which forces you to memorize where each enemy (including bosses) in the game is and complete the whole game. Resident Evil 7’s Madhouse mode is great too in the way it remixes the main campaign.

Mike Sweet

Ben! I may have missed it but, have you talked about playing Littlewood on Switch? I'm loving it and haven't enjoyed a game like it since falling in love with Stardew Valley. Nothing else has stuck since, but Littlewood is looking to take up a huge amount of time.

ProcyonNumber6

Benn and company, which celebrity are you most afraid you wouldn't recognize if you saw them at a restaurant? For instance I love Daft Punk but I could sit right next to them at an Applebee's and not know any better.

Tim Lorow

I've been playing a lot of Slime Rancher lately and getting sucked in to the building and collecting game loop. My favorite discovery so far that if you take a large slime, you can throw it to the ground in order to "rocket jump" to slightly higher platforms. When is a time that you found something unintentionally useful in a game that made you feel like a genius?

John Richards

After years of consideration, I finally made a grilled cheese sandwich with mayonnaise last week. It was decent. Possibly over hyped.

Is it possible to get good at strategy games or are you just born with good or bad strategy? I swear I will never be good at them

Howdy crew, Since Monster Hunter Rise is a topic this week I thought I'd just share some praise for Capcom and the Monster Hunter team. They supported base MH World and Iceborne with numerous free, content rich updates and I feel like it really reflects both their and the communities passion for the series. One example of this is the final monster released for Iceborne was not originally planned for the game, but the when they saw the communities excitement at the possibility it would be, the team decided they had to add it. I'm happy for they have been rewarded for their passion with the success of MH World and the perceived excitement around MH Rise. That's all, no question. I just wanted to share some praise for their work. I will also plug the monster hunter channel in the discord, we have been playing a good bit of World recently and undoubtedly will be playing Rise when it releases. If anyone is interested in finding others to play with its a good place! -KP

Hello Cohorts! We've gotten another blast of new Monster Hunter Rise information this week, and I'm really excited to jump into a new Monster Hunter. It'll be really cool to be able to hunt with everybody in the Monster Hunter Discord channel on the same platform. That said, I know the series isn't as big for y'all. Did any of you reach credits for either Iceborne or base World? Have you seen anything so far that makes you think this will be the one that really grabs your attention to the end? Thanks, Nick from Atlanta P.S. For a future question I'm planning, do any of you own a set of dice? D4, D6, and D20 in particular?

Matt Robinson

Howdy Ben and the cohorts! I’ve been playing Chrono Trigger lately and watching the deepest dive on it (for the record I’ve been watching Minnmax from day one but wasn’t able to play it at the time) and couldn’t help but laugh as you poor suckers talked about tapping the button during the soda drinking contest. Us old bastards used a trick on SNES games that used a tapping mechanic (and shame on you JeffM for not knowing this), you just grab a pen or preferably a sharpie and rub it back and forth over the button to get the taps. But that got me wondering, have you ever used a physical hack on a controller to gain an advantage in a game? Another example would be Final Fantasy 6 where you get to the raft ride and get to a certain point, you could wrap 2 rubber bands around the controller (1 to choose the direction of the raft and the other to press the action button so you constantly attack) to repeat the same fight over and over and could level up while you slept.

YARF

I just started playing D&D with some buddies. Have you guys ever played it, know anything about it, and ALSO, how ashamed should I feel and how much less of a man does this make me...? Should I tell my wife? The bar for entry into D&D, and the time requirements it demands, are absurdly high and deliciously excessive.

Hey Ben and the CLCs, Halo Infinite is far and away my most anticipated game of the year. However, outside of the Halo community, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of conversation about Microsoft’s biggest franchise. With the extra year of development time, F2P multiplayer, bringing on Halo veteran Joe Staten to lead the campaign, and the focus on bigger campaign play spaces and side content, I think Infinite could be something special and surprise people. What does Halo Infinite need to do to be in the GOTY conversation?

AnotherRobot

I watched Beetlejuice the other day. From the rapid-fire comedy to the incorporated magic, Betelgeuse and Genie from Disney’s Aladdin feel too similar to be coincidental.

Hey cohorts, Last night I had a dream where I made a mistake at work and my bosses singled me out for it and made a huge scene. Today I realized I was kind of nervous around them because I kept thinking about this and being worried I was going to mess something up. Have you ever had a dream that influenced the way you interacted with someone in real life? Am I insane? Should I never sleep again?! Thanks for all the great content! P.S. I just started using the discord this last week and I’m happy to confirm the fact it is the kindest sliver of the internet.

Chip Kimble

Hey Ben, I remember you being enamored with the little train whistle before Barroth charges. Well in Rise, you can puppeteer the monsters, which means you sir can be a conductor of the pain train!

Adam W

Hey Crew, First off : GOOD JOB CAPCOM!! I'm so stoked for Rise. Prior to Monster Hunter World my only experience with the series was Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii. For some reason I really liked it. Despite the fact I played about 6 hours before I realized motion controls were not required. I am beyond excited to have the formula established in World brought to the Switch. 90% of my gaming time these past couple weeks has been Monster Hunter World with the MinnMax community. It has been a blast and I'm looking forward to starting over with the same (and hopefully some new) folks when Rise releases in a couple weeks. GOOD JOB CAPCOM, adam w

Hey Bennie and the Maxxettes, Over the years I've often felt overwhelmed with the number of amazing games and movies that I'm yet to watch/play. Because of this I find it hard to take the plunge and commit to any 1 of them. To help with this I've taken to keeping a list of the movies and games that I want to play, and then whenever I'm looking for something new, I roll a dice and select the game at that entry in the list. Do any of you have a strange way of selecting what you want to watch/play next?

G-Max Thoeren

Hey CLCS, Have you guys ever been able to go into a game totally blind, and if so, how did it go? The closest I've come is probably with Persona 4 Golden. I knew absolutely nothing other than what the cover looked like and that it was supposedly the best Vita Game. I remember being totally put off by the opening movie, but I gave the game a chance and now it's one of my favorites of all time.

Josh LaBaw

When are we getting that next gen game that really brings the new hardware to life? Is it Rachet & Clank?

Smillie14

Hey troops! I am a newcomer to the Monster Hunter series, with the lovely people in the discord pulling me in a couple weeks ago. I can safely say that I am now obsessed and I'm really looking forward to Rise. However, I don't have much multiplayer experience using the Switch as I'm mainly a single player kind of gamer. I've been loving the ease of jumping into hunts with community members but I've heard a lot of grumbles elsewhere about the Switch's online capabilities. So my question is; Do you think the online infrastructure of the Switch is capable enough to handle a title as multiplayer-focused as Monster Hunter? It'd be a real shame if it ends up holding the game back from being as easy and exciting as World. Thank you and keep up the amazing work you all do!

podbod

You live alone but are getting a new roommate. You haven’t met them yet but they have good references. They will show up this evening just before it’s time for bed. Oh but there’s a twist! The new roommate is an alien who goes by the name Bob. Unfortunately for Bob, he forgot his Earth and Human Interaction Manual in the spaceship and skipped most of the sessions for earthly integration training. Bob will show up wearing normal clothes and can speak English. Other than that, he has basically no idea about human interaction or how to perform normal tasks that humans do every day. But, Bob figures he can just wing it, and learn from watching what you do. So, how long do you think passes before you suspect something is seriously up with Bob?

Geoff Enright

Hello everyone, Monster Hunter Rise looks like it's going to be an excellent game, and I'm very excited it looks they will keep the open world model with free access to all the zones without loading. I'm most excited about the Japanese theme and the wire bugs adding a fun travel and fight mechanic. My only worry is it's going to be switch exclusive and restricted by the system. But I am happy to see it in a portable console again! What's your hype level at?! -Geoff aka Groffles

Victor Pham

Is the combat system in Persona 5 Strikers a better marriage of action and turn based combat than Final Fantasy VII Remake? You pause the action when you summon a Persona, similar to the action slowing to a crawl in FF7R when you bring up the action menu. Both games have a stagger system where striking enemies with their weakness puts them in a stun state. But the difference is Strikers feels really snappy and responsive at 60 fps and has better dungeons and combat encounters. Am I crazy?

Shipwright

Hello Ben and the Cohorts! Thanks to the Dynasty Warriors movie trailer I started reminiscing on my favorite times with the series, and was reminded how much I spent playing 3 on the ps2, and in particular the hilariously bad voice acting, which led me to this video of some of the highlights: https://youtu.be/nOmbzUE6UAY Yes this is the actual game. In that same vein what are some of your favorite terrible voice lines in gaming that you love for all the wrong reasons? Thanks love the show! -Ryan from Minneapolis

Joshua Caleb

Hey fellow flesh computer cohorts, what's your favorite game in a genre you normally don't like or have no interest in? How often do you try games outside your "preferred" genres?

Jake

Hey y’all, think I submitted this question waaay late a couple weeks back but maybe it just sucked.. What game’s box art makes you want to turn the sands of time back and redo the cover? For me it’s Mario Kart Wii... It really kills me that Mario and Luigi are driving invisible karts WITH the systems hardware in their hand! I see what Nintendo was going for but like a dog its ruff. (To me at least)

Strange Sloth

The delay of Guilty Gear Strive got me thinking that there has been a lot of delays lately. Do you think with all these postponed games, the PS5 and Xbox series generation will be longer? Last gen was 7 years. Will this gen get to 8 or 9?

Eric Holm

What's the good word MinnMax? We're at 1 year since the lockdown began, and it has me wondering: will the gaming industry go "back to normal" or has Covid started a completely new era and has changed everything permanently? For instance, will we ever see huge press conferences with live audiences ever again? Do you think that working from home is here to stay for some major studios now that they have had time to figure out how to make it work? Is there going to be an influx of new gamers that discovered it as a quarantine hobby and how will they effect what types of games we'll see? Thanks, and keep being awesome!

Jonathan Fenn

Hey XamNnimers, hope you're all well - I saw that you've got a copy of the Stardew Valley board game, and was very jealous, as they currently aren't available in the UK. Stardew is such a perfect fit for a board game, I'm almost surprised this didn't happen sooner. My question is this - what video game (or other media) do you think would be the best foundation for a board game? I remember seeing a Final Fantasy 7 Monopoly board some years ago, and thinking it was huge waste, as Monopoly suuuuuuucks. Some kind of Catan or Risk style game, where you travel across the board by chocobo or airship seems like a much better fit. Interested to hear your thoughts, Jonathan

Sean Mason

I’ve got a little game for you guys! Here's the situation: You get 1 million dollars if you beat a game of your choosing. These are the rules: The game needs to be finished in a single sitting. The game needs to be played on its highest difficulty (if available), and it can't be a game without the possibility of dying or some form of fail state (no walking sims, or anything like that). Play the game, "roll the credits", earn your million. Which game do you choose? Best, Sean M.

In light of the grumbling that happens whenever a new first party studio title is announced to be cross-gen, I did some digging into the GI archives and came away with some interesting facts. If y'all had to guess, when was the last GI cover story about a cross gen title? The answer: March 2016's LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens cover, 28 months after the start of "next-gen". To put that into perspective, the current-gen equivalent would be March of 2023. Below I've included every cross-platform cover story, the month the game was featured and how many next-gen exclusive covers were featured before it. Hopefully ya'll find this as interesting as I did. Shadow of Mordor-Dec '13 Destiny-Jan '14 MGSV-Mar '14 (1) Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare-June '14 (3) Far Cry 4-July '14 Assassin's Creed: Rogue-Sep '14 (5) The Evil Within/Alien Isolation-Oct '14 Resident Evil: Revelations 2-Nov '14 (Happy 1st birthday, PS4/XBO!) Rise of the Tomb Raider-Mar '15 (8) Disney Infinity 3.0-June '15 (10) Destiny: The Taken King-Sept '15 (12) LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens-March '16 (17)

Hey Ben and the CLCs, By my count, there are three noteworthy co-op PvE shooters coming out this year: Second Extinction, Aliens: Fireteam, and Back 4 Blood. What’s your hype level for these three games?

Rickfromatlanta

Hi crew what does uff da mean? And in what situations would you use this phrase? Thanks.

Hello Minners of Maxia When I was 10 I played Goldeneye for the first time at a friends house, from then on it was the only thing I ever wanted to do. But I only had a gameboy at the time, so thinking it was essentially the same game but smaller I bought James Bond 007. It was not, it was the opposite. Do you guys have any similar experiences? Cheers, Pav
