Greetings, cohorts! And welcome, Janet! Your voice and perspective are a welcome addition to the podcast! My wife and I are expecting our first child in July (a boy!), so naturally I have been thinking a lot about parenting. My parents weren't "gamers," but they did have a NES that I started playing at a very young age. As I matured, I didn't have anyone guiding my gaming journey. I had to figure out what I liked, what I didn't like, and which games to ask for for Christmas based on my own research (mostly magazines in the early to mid 90's). My son's experience will be VERY different from mine, not only because of the technology available to him, but because he'll have a Dad that's a very informed and seasoned gamer. My question is, how much do you think I should guide him? Should I let him make his own mistakes and get him what I know is probably a low-quality game if that is what he wants? Should I jump him right into twin thumbsticks or start him on a D-Pad like I used? I know that JeffM is the only cohort on today that has a child, but hearing all of your perspectives on what YOU might do would be entertaining!

Greetings guys, Can you rank these rpg occurrences by how satisfying they are: - upgrading your weapon and one-shotting a previously tough enemy - meeting the stat requirements to complete an objective using words / skills - receiving a quest for an item, only to tell the quest giver you have already acquired the item Feel free to add any you think should be on the list. Have a great day all

Hey MinnMax, Piggybacking off the car story last week I thought I'd share my own. I was driving my sweet 2004 Volvo sedan in the foothills of the Bay Area when I came to a stop sign. As I was stopped a convoy of red Ferrari's came blowing by like some Fast and the Furious scene. I thought, that's pretty cool, and pulled out behind them to head down the mountain. Looking in my rearview I realized that I'd accidentally jumped in the middle of the pack and there was a whole line of Ferrari's behind me. I can only imagine how pissed they were to be stuck behind my shitty Volvo, but I was stoked pretending to be in a Gran Turismo road race. For a few moments I *tried* to see if I could keep up with the Ferrari's in front, but obviously they were out of sight instantly. What a time to be alive.

Hey, cohorts! I was wondering if you have a specific gaming memory, in which a game helped you through a difficult (or possibly different) part of your life? Do you now associate that game with that specific point in time? How did it help you (or did it at all)? My personal example is Sonic the Hedgehog 2 helping me through a brain tumor as a child. I’m very happy to have been able to be distracted by that specific game at the time, and while it was a difficult time, I still look back on that game fondly (and with a little bit of gratitude). Thank you for all of the amazing content!

Comment on the Gamestop sports cars last week, anti-lag in the car world is a system to help spool the turbo quickly and eliminate turbo lag. Basically it retards the ignition timing and enriches the fuel mixture allowing unburnt raw fuel to pass through the piston cylinder and into the exhaust manifold and hot side of the turbo. It then explodes there causing much greater pressure to spin the turbine wheel and instant power when the ignition timing switches back to slightly advanced and fuel mixture is normalized.

Hey SEO Nightmares! I was wondering if any of you have a "stands the test of time", "comfort food" game that you replay every one or two years. If so, what memory or feeling from your life is relived by replaying this game? For me, it's Resident Evil 4 or Final Fantasy X (though I rarely finish FFX all the way through), because it takes me back to times spent in my parents' basement with my older brother, tossing back mountain dews, killing plates of perfectly baked chocolate chip cookies, and watching him absolutely destroy Seymour Guado with a series of mind-bending buffs and debuffs that broke my adolescent brain at the time. Cheers and thanks for being great!

Hello MinnMaxers, With gamepass clearly being the best deal in gaming, Sony has received alot of criticism for PS Now but PS Plus has given us day 1 PS5 games like Bugsnax, destruction all stars, and most recently the new oddworld. I think playstation has not been given enough credit for its subscription model. While gamepass is great, games with gold is almost obsolete and wonder what the groups thoughts are between the subscription models for both platforms ?

umryan

Do you use the term video games or videogames? Do you consider the difference to be significant or negligible?

Justin Ray

I just listened to the Game Maker's Notebook podcast with Randy Pitchford and yet again another guest is telling Ted Price how amazing Sunset Overdrive is. I am a huge fan of the game as well and I think it missed many people being an Xbox One exclusive. What is the MinnMax opinion of Sunset Overdrive? Do you think Insomniac should spend the resources to make a sequel? Also the game is now on PC and on Gamepass so people should play it!

Sup Jabronies Why are band names so weird and often dumb? Some of my favorite bands have dumb names. Taking Back Sunday, City of Sound, Radiohead to name a few. But then bands like Slayer, Justice and Crash Bandits have cool names. What are some bands you love with dumb/cool names and what makes a band name cool to you. Smell ya later -Jacob formally Minnesota.

If you are old enough to have rented games and movies, what media (game, movie, etc) do you think you rented the most in your lifetime? Perhaps to the point where you should have just bought it. For me it was the VHS of Transformers the Movie (the animated OG transformers movie). My mom didn't believe in buying movies but I easily rented it at least 25 times and would act out the movie with my toys at home as I watched. The game I rented the most was the SNES Ninja Turtle fighting game which was part of my Blockbuster Videogame Championship practice (you guys should do a segment about those competitions.

Hey MinnMaxers, got a question that's been on my mind for a while. We're seeing more and more women characters in gaming, which has become more important to me since about two years ago when my daughter was born. The importance of representation is something I now not only know, but feel. But then this brings me to my question: When given the option to create a character or at least choose the gender of a protagonist, every male games journalist I know opts to play as a woman. The Mass Effect and recent Assassin's Creed games are great examples of this. I didn't listen to a single podcast, read a single article or watch a single video from a male journalist who chose to be a male protagonist. What's going on there? Am I just not consuming enough media from enough people? Or is "male representation" not important because, let's be honest, video games have never really lacked in that area? And what about you all? When given the choice, do you opt for a male character, female, or do you switch it up? Why? Thanks for all your great content! ~Brady Easter Edmond, OK

There's something like 10^20 more unique ways to shuffle a standard deck of playing cards than there are atoms in and on earth. What are your favorite random, mind-blowing facts?

Hey Cohorts! I recently just finished up Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition! What a trip! It was a roller coaster of a ride all the way through! But the end felt super drawn out, and, as a result of having already dumped 60 hours into the game, I turned on casual mode and breezed through the last act of that game. While a finished the game and still appreciated the end of it, I felt kinda bad about suddenly needing to bump the difficulty down. Have you guys ever done something similar? How much does difficulty add to the story of the game for you? Thanks and regards!

Hi Folks! I've just seen a fan made cutscene of the famous ladder scene from Metal Gear Solid 3, made from the ground up in Unreal Engine 4. It has set me off once more thinking about how timeless that game is. Am I wrong in thinking that timelessness and great are similar but distinct characteristics? It seems like timeless games are usually great, but great games aren't necessarily timeless. Are there any games in the last 5 years or so that the panel think are timeless, that we'll be talking about 10 to 15 years from now? Cheers, Harrison

John Lee

Salutations, Do any of you have a gaming hill you are willing to die on, and if so, what is it? - John P.S. can you all pronounce bag, about, roof, and milk?

Hi Cohorts! A few weeks ago, Leo told us to, and I quote, 'Play Dishonored', so I did, of course, Leo knows what's up. Anyway, I'm up to the end of Dishonored 2 by this point, and after swapping all the time between blink, the heart, and other abilities, I suddenly had the idea to bind the two of them to those two extra mouse buttons that nobody uses. It took some getting used to, but boy oh boy, now it's brilliant, because I swap abilities superfast and can really zip around the level with Blink. Have you guys used unconventional control settings like this? Any recommendations?

Is Prince highly revered throughout the state of Minnesota, or is he just referred to on a list of fun facts about the state?

Matthew Weatherley

G'day Minnmaxeroos I LOVE MONSTER HUNTER!!!!!! With that said I totally agree with the criticism you raised last week regarding the game telling you absolutely nothing about its systems. My question is how can you fix that problem without creating even more pop up tutorials or slowing down the start to baby step you through every control option. As manuals don't come with games any more should developers consider companion app manuals to assist with learning while not getting in the way of game play. Thanks.

Hey gang! A mysterious stranger has just handed you keys to a seemingly abandoned factory outside of town. You unlock and open the front door and the factory comes to life: pistons pounding, conveyer belts rolling, and other machinations you can barely identify. The factory can endlessly produce one product of your choice. What product do you choose? A few rules. The magical factory cannot make more magical factories; no wishing for more wishes. Also, let's be reasonable with products being made up of multiple items. For example, you could have the factory make a game console complete with controller, cables, etc., but avoid things like making a house with a fully decked out gaming room with TV, games, console, and so on. Personally, and to be incredibly specific, I'd love an endless supply of Mercury Montego's. It was the first car I ever had, and as a fairly large dude, I was surprised by how well I fit in it. I sadly lost it in a car accident a few years after getting it, so to have that car back, and be able to replace it whenever I want, would be amazing. Thanks for the content!

Hello from rural Australia! I've been really concerned about the loss of physical media for a while now. How long do you think it has left in the games industry? What do your physical libraries look like compared to your digital ones?

Michael Moran

Did you all play games on your graphing calculator? What was your favorite? We played a lot of Bomber Kids over the TI-83 link cable in my school. I feel like these are probably extinct now that everyone just has better games on their phone.

ObiJuanDeanobi

The popcap doc got me thinking about the bejewled mod in WoW, what is the best game within a game?

A genie gives you the choice to have the power to forever improve older games by fixing either graphics, or controls/sound/dialogue/text. Which do you choose and why?

Hey MinnMax crew, I guess this is mainly a question for Ben. Have you thought about doing a full game playthrough similar to Overblood under the MinnMax monicer and for everyone else if MinnMax did something like that what do you think would be a good pick for the playthrough?

Brian Ventura

Hey MinnMax! I've been thinking about "verb sets" in games recently. For me, it's a compelling perspective on most games, boiling it down to "okay what can I *do* here exactly?" What are some verbs in games that are very rare but also fun or interesting to you?! For me, "threaten" comes to find. It's oddly satisfying to do in Red Dead 2, but I can't think of many other games where thereatening is a thing? Read Dead has a lot of good verbs... and also, if I may mention one more, "teleport" is great fun in Dishonored. Where are my teleportation games?!!

Hey MinnMax! I recently backed up all of my PS2 games onto my PC and have been playing through them with an emulator. It's been a blast and is making me want to go out and buy more used PS2 games. What is the Cohorts history with emulation?

Hey MinnMaxers! For Ben and Kyle, who are Comedy Bang Bang guests that always make you want to listen to the podcast right away? To others who don't listen to CBB, are there guests on podcasts you listen to that are always a must-listen? For me, besides longtime greats Paul F. Tompkins and Lauren Lapkus, I love episodes with Carl Tart and Shaun Diston.

Hey MinnMaxers and Janet!! My wife and I have recently gotten into playing story based games together thanks to A Way Out, 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim, Gone Home, and Life is Strange. It’s a different type of experience playing with your significant other. My question is, how do you feel about playing story based video games with your significant other? Do you do it or does it tear you away from the game too much? And bonus question what are games that you and your partner have enjoyed in the past?

Nick from Atlanta

Hello Cohorts! By the time you read this, I'll have been stabbed in the arm by a needle containing some of that good good vaccine. How are your own vaccine searches going? Thanks, Nick from Atlanta

Hello CLCs, With warmer weather incoming I have a very serious question. Favorite frozen desert: traditional dairy ice cream, FroYo, custard or something else entirely? Thanks!

Hey, Ben & Friends! Can we take a moment to talk about dance sequences in games? Whether it’s in Bayonetta or New Super Mario Bros. U, the sight of a game’s cast coming together to dance is always a welcome treat! Do you enjoy this trend? Which game moments stand out to you in this respect?

Hey there cohorts! Are you ready for the brand new game show thats been taking the nation by storm?! Thats right! Its time for Arbitrarily or otherwise non memorably named gaming peripherals, components and accesories! Here are your questions: 1)What is the name of the Dreamcast memory card with screen and buttons? 2)Name the two center buttons on either side of the xbox button on an xbox one controller. 3) What was the name of the joystick originally released with the Atari 2600? 4) Name the proprietary data storage medium used in the PSP? 5) Name the large controller originally released with the XBOX in north america 6) Released in 1987 from Asciiware, name the arcade style joystick controller for NES 7) What 3 additions were made to the controlls of the New 3DS versus the original 3DS? 8) What did nintento name the memory cards for the N64, bonus points for remembering how much data they stored. 9) This accessory allowed for 2 player gameplay in select games on the Game Boy 10) Released in 1998, This gameboy accessory could be used to find fish. Answers: 1) VMU visual memory unit 2)View button and Menu button 3)cx10 4) Magic Gate 5) The Duke 6) NES Advantage 7)ZR, ZL, C-stick 8) N64 Controller Pak, 256kb 9) Game link cable 10)Game boy pocket sonar

Hey Benn and the CLCs, How long after seeing a throne in a game do you try to sit in it? Do you prefer there to be ramifications to these actions or not?

Hi All, Just wondering since the announcement of the PS3, PSP and vita store closure have any of you actually bought anything? I bought Valkyria Chronicles 2, Fight Night Round 3, Patapon and Luftrausers.

Hi All! I noticed a lot of people commenting on the "new" genre of movies popping up surrounding a crossover of intellectual properties last week after the new Space Jame trailer dropped. I saw a lot of criticism for movies like this, Wreck it Ralph 2, and Ready Player One, revolving around the fact that it feels like nothing more than big studios flexing over what IPs they have the rights to. In games, the closest analogy I can think of is Smash Bros, which feels universally beloved and people are constantly excited for. Why do you think this is? Is it the medium of being a video game? Is it the heart and soul of Sakurai that's put into smash bros? Would love to know your thoughts.

PseudonymousJoe

Hello, What is the largest gulf in quality between a studio's best game and their average output? I'm talking about great games from not so great developers, or perhaps truly outstanding games from otherwise average studios. My vote is the original Deus Ex from Ion Storm. Maybe that's cheating because there were two teams, but either way, you have a studio who's best game was a massively influential, top 10 of all time contender, and whose second best game was.... Daikatana?

Hey Cohorts! It's the game you've all been waiting for: >>Balan Wonderworld or Super Mario World?<< Below are six perfect 10 user reviews from Metacritic - it's up to you to guess whether the review is for Balan Wonderworld or Super Mario World. Good luck, have fun, let's goooooo! • “Even better than Odyssey, the very many creative worlds, feels fantastic to control, beautiful graphics, first game to have ______, when I play this game I am ready to have a smile on my face for 1 hour. True Odyssey did it but it didn't do it with the amount of excitement and creative level design” - Super Mario World (blank was Yoshi) “The puzzles are confusing a bit and some levels are Nintendo hard but don’t effect the game that much.” - Super Mario World • “How much are desperate the haters today. This game is much better than many ridiculous platforms games today.” - Balan Wonderworld • “Best platformer on a handheld. Many levels and secrets, _____ is really fun to use, but still bit breaking the game or rather making the game much easier, it's still very challenging.” - Super Mario World [GBA] (blank was ‘Cape’) • “Holy f***. Never in my life have I seen a game more deserving of the elusive "ten out of ten." Absolute masterpiece.” - Balan Wonderworld • “This game contains some truly unique charm that rarely I see in today's games. I can see the way that the development intent to make when they make this, and I like what they've done here. Good job and good game” - Balan Wonderworld

Hey Cohorts! Not to kiss too much butt, but Ben's PopCap oral history was an amazing listen (that everyone should check out and share around btw). Hearing about the development philosophy, the changing environment, crazy stories and the highs/lows of the studio was awesome, but there wasn't much talk about the games themselves. If the cohorts have a favorite PopCap game I'd love to hear about them and why it's Insaniquarium.

Alistair Grant

Hey you lovely bunch, You love lists right!? I have a suggested game. Select three cultural objects made in the past decade that communicate the essence of a chosen city to someone who is unfamiliar with that place. It could be a film, book, album, a game. For example for LA suggestions could be Nightcrawler, GTAV, Section 80 by Kendrick Lamar. So I guess the cities could be randomly selected, ideally places cohorts have lived or at least stayed in for a bit so they can speak directly to their lived experience. Unlikely any city can be succinctly summarised with three things so maybe each thing attempts to represent or encapsulate a particular aspect of the ‘feel’ of a place? If you want to play with the parameters (five things rather than three, or twenty years rather than ten, broaden it out to state rather than city) be my guest! Ali, England

Welcome Janet and hello computer loving cohorts. A friend and I were talking and he asked if I could only have a single gaming platform what would it be. After thinking for a while I decided on the 3ds, there are so many games I love on it. Plus there's the virtual console libary and all the ds games that are playable on it. Not to mention you can play 7 generations of pokemon on it, low key my favorite series of games ever. Sadly the games I'd miss the most would be Super Mario RPG and Tetris Attack which strangely never got a vitural console release on it. So anyway my question is what would be your single gaming platform if you had to choose? And to make it interesting let's say you could still also have PC gaming as I think that would most of your preferred platform. Lol so excluding that, what would you choose?

Hootz

My dudes. Despite what any of my friends and family try to tell me, I’m convinced that my obsession with Monster Hunter Rise is not a problem, but rather, THE solution. However, several of my friends are not willing to hop on the Monster Hunter hype train. Obviously, everyone’s entitled to spend their free time doing whatever they like, or playing whatever games they want. But have any of you ever swayed some of your casual gamer friends (folks NOT involved in the industry in any way) to try a game they would have actively avoided otherwise? If so, how’d you do it? Keep on killin it, friends!

Godzillas Petite Girlfriend

Hey minn max crew! I am a nurse and as I was checking on a patient, they swung at me and I entered bullet time and avoided. It was what I call a "video game moment". In the past I've climbed silos in collapsed dams and had Nathan Drake like anxiety climbing rickety ladders and jumping sketchy gaps but this one took the cake for me. What are some of your video game moments? Close calls, big bails or Tony hawk fails I wanna hear em! Thanks for the content and making night shift a little less lonely My question thi

Austin B Media

Hey, MinnMax friendos! With society in full 90s nostalgia mode, what games did you love from the 90s that you'd love to see remastered (or even remade) for new systems like the PS5 and Xbox Series X?

Strange Sloth

Playing outriders is so much fun it’s definitely going in my top 5 this year along with monster hunter. I’m playing two different classes and have both of them at lvl 17. What classes are you playing as and do you think this will be one of your favorite games of the year?

Michael Lardieri

Ben, I took your advice on the show and watched all of the Metal Gear Solid movies on youtube, spanning MGS1 through 5. I've never played the games but have been around videogames long enough to know the iconic moments, the twist in MGS2, the ending that made people mad about MGS5, etc. Overall, I have to say.. it was kinda boring and not great. The voice acting got better over time, but it felt like the dark early days of anime dubs. It was just a numbing stream of hidden agendas, back stabbings, and long monologues. My question is: do your or Suriel think that is a legitimate opinion of the story since I didn't actually play the game and therefore didn't have any agency? Do you think you lose something about a game's story if you don't actually do the gameplay and instead watch the story unfold passively?

jacob hubbard

Ben and Cohorts, With the release of Outriders and how it's being received so far, I wanted to talk a bit about the homogenization of online looter-shooters. I feel as though most of these games (Destiny, Anthem, The Division) are moving closer to looking and feeling like each other with every release, and even non-shooter games are replicating that gear-leveling style. At some point, I believe there will be some kind of large innovation that sets these types of huge online games on a new path. My question is, what do you think this will look like? And maybe more interestingly, what developer do you see accomplishing the big shift? Thanks guys!

Joebeezer

Hello all, Will E3 ever return to its former glory?

Sutton

Hello Janet! I was wondering, let’s say you are adventuring in a game and come upon a branching trail. They are identical in every way, but one leads to the left and the other to the right. Which way do you go first? P.S. Jak II fucking rocks Thanks, Sutton
