Hey MinnCrew, after listening to your conversation last week about what constitutes a JRPG, I have to ask - do you consider Dark Souls and Bloodborne to be JRPGs? In the strictest definition of the term, I feel like it has to be, but Miyazaki's western fantasy inspirations and the game design seems very disconnected from traditional JRPGs. Maybe this is just the same discussion as the Dragon's Dogma one, but I figured I'd ask what the experts think. (As a side note, I've had a very stressful/busy few months and am just recently finding time to return to the podcast, and I have to say it's very comforting to hear your familiar voices and feel like I'm a part of the conversation :)

Hey folks, My buddy and I went to GameStop to buy Returnal, only to find out they didn’t have it in stock. The employee stated it was because they “only get what is preordered for niche games.” Considering Wreckfest was on the shelf next to us, I couldn’t think of any reason for Returnal not to be as well. Please unpretzel my brain and tell me what constitutes a niche game?

Hi everyone, I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on the viability of renting games in the modern gaming landscape. With next gen titles costing more, and releases that seem perfect for the rental market (Pokemon snap for example), why do game rental services seem rarer than ever? Being Canadian, we have no real alternative to Gamefly (we did have one called GameAccess but it has recently gone under) but I know I can't be the only one who would make use of these services if they were available. (P.S. some Public Libraries have Game Rentals available, and buying/selling games on Kijiji or EBay are alternative methods, as are services like GamePass, I just can't help but feel there's room for a more definitive solution.) Thanks and feel free to trim this down! Have a good one.

What is your favorite comic book/ graphic novel?

RickyWinterborn

i always wondered why my parents never had even an inkling to try video games growing up, but now that I'm 31 and refusing to download tik tok, I'm realizing i'm hitting that grumpy point in my life where i resist the next popular culture thing. am i weird or is this normal? are you excited or afraid to start skipping the big cultural fads?

Brian W

Heeeeeeeeyyyyy! Using the naming convention of Returnal let’s rename some gaming franchises? For example Zelda involves going to a bunch of dungeons so maybe Dungurnal? 1. Pac Man 2. Super Mario Bros. 3. Tetris 4. Pokémon 5. Final Fantasy 6. Bayonetta 7. Pikmin

Hope everyone is doing well. I would like to know if everyone else shares the experience of download times on Nintendo consoles being SO much worse than others. Recently downloading New Pokemon Snap, which is a little less than 7GB, took about 4 hours where as a similar-sized file would be finished in under an hour easily on my PS4 or PS5 for instance — and it was the same back in the Wii days. Does everyone have this problem and do any of you know why this is? Thanks.

Mike Sweet

Hi crew, Ben! Fantastic job on the History of Pokemon Snap! My question is: what is all of your "Jack and the Bean Stalk" ideas for a game? Thanks!

Hugo Aguilar

Hey MinnMaxers, With Resident Evil Village upon us. I got to thinking of all those wacky and creative puzzles. So with that I want to know what your favorite puzzles are in video games.

Papa Shawn's

Greetings Double M's! Have you ever purchased a game you knew nothing about, soley based on the review scores from sites like Metacritic? I knew NOTHING about the Persona franchise but a few years ago, I was bored at work and looked up "Top PS4 Games" and Persona 5 was at the top of the list! I had some gift cards that were burning a hole in my pocket so I took the chance. Its now my favorite turn-based RPG's. Has this or something similar ever happened with the MinnMax Crew. I know alot of people tend to hold review scores with a grain of salt but what are your thoughts!?

Brian Ventura

Hey MinnMax Who is the coolest (videogame or otherwise) character of all time? And what's your kind of "cool"? Is someone cool cause they truly care? Or are they cool cause they don't give an F 😎 Does it boil down to those insane skills they have, or is it simply the fact that they're so stylish and sexy? Let me know!

Ryan Brister

Hello MinnMax! Recently a 6 LP, $120 vinyl edition of the Yakuza 0 soundtrack was made available for pre-order. I extremely do not need this, but nevertheless found myself tempted. My questions are: what's a video game soundtrack you would like to see given such extravagant treatment? Are there any soundtracks that you are particularly proud to own?

Toby Martin

Hey MinnMax I’m here to bring you the hit new game show Jennifer Hale or Jennifer Fail! I have 5 characters here and you need to say if it is voiced by the one and only Jennifer Hale or if it’s someone else then it’s classed as a Jennifer Fail. Before beginning I wanted to thank John Scovic for coming up with the name of the game. 1. Jean Grey in Marvel: Ultimate Alience 2 (Molly Hagan) (Hale did voice her in the DLC of the 3rd game) 2. Multiplayer announcer in Uncharted 3 (Jennifer Hale) 3. Black Cat in Spider-Man 2 (Holly Fields) (Hale did voice her in the original PS1 game as well as Mary Jane) 4. Trinity in The Matrix: Path Of Neo (Jennifer Hale) 5. Samus in Metroid Prime (Jennifer Hale)

Howdy y’all! A couple weeks ago, the Minnmax discord exposed me to the Monster Hunter World tabletop game Kickstarter. I believe the backing period is over, but you could have paid for just the base game at a reasonable $70 bucks, or gone all in with all the expansions for over $300 when shipping and taxes were done. As I was looking at this, I discovered something about myself. I passed on this, because I didn’t want to bother with the base game if I wasn’t willing to shell out for ALL of the expansions, even though I’m pretty sure I would have enjoyed the game. Is this something that any of you have experienced, or do I have a problem? Have DLC season passes ruined us/me? Keep up the great work!

Noah D.

Hi Ben and cohorts! I played through RE village demo and loved what I experienced, which is odd because I normally can't handle horror games (looking at you RE7 and Condemned). My question is, has there been a game that's been too scary for you to play or finish?

IanTClark

If you’re anything like me - and I know I am - you love dipping sauce. But what is the best most inclusive sauce in which to dip your food? Personally I like sweet and sour sauce with Arby sauce as a close second.

Brenton and Meriam

I've heard people talk about real life skills they've gained or improved by playing video games. I haven't heard anyone talk about the real life skills that make them better at video games. The more advanced Beat Saber levels that require independent hand coordination made me wonder if my years playing piano were helping me out. I'd imagine Kyle and Leo's drum skills are even more helpful! Any other examples come to mind?

Thom Blackburn

The distant future... The year 2025... Cars burn in the streets (hover cars), and some youtuber has become president of THE WORLD. He immediately outlaws video game controllers (and mouse and keyboard). How do you envision playing games without any of the existing input methods? Thanks, Thom

Ed K

Last few months have sold me on Biomutant, but the early reveal was uninteresting to me. Can you think of a time that a late marketing push changed your opinion on a game?

Jake Z

Since everyone likes to talk about value per dollar nowadays, which game is more worth its price, Returnal or Pokémon Snap?

Patrick Polk

Hi, this is more of a comment than a question but: Aaaahhhhhhhhhh Giant Bomb why no no no no no no nooooooooo. Sincerely, Patrick Polk

Shakenbake67

Hey MinnMaxers, With the news of Alex Navarro, Vinny Caravella, and Brad Shoemaker leaving Giant Bomb, what do you guys think of the news and what are some of your favorite memories of them. They are legends in the industry in my view and they will be missed I will definitely miss Alex Navarros epic drumming streams of Rock Band.

Spencer Botine

MinnSquad - ASSEMBLE! What’s the worst video game title to ever exist? There can only be one. Thank you making this crucial decision for us. Cheers

Justin Dale

Hello Ben and the CLC’s!!! Have you ever been talked out of a game and look back on it now and remember it for the better or worse? Context: I remember a birthday where my parents took me to pick out any video game I wanted. Snes was still at its height and I knew just the one. We went in the store and I pointed to Earthbound in its big box with the strategy guide. My mother asked me if I was sure and i double guessed myself and I thought about it. I ended up walking out that day with Killer Instinct. (Still one of my fav fighting games and I still have the CD soundtrack it came with). I have feeling about missing out on Earthbound as a kid... but Killer Instinct was BA.

Grizzled Gaming

Hey friennds with 2 N’s! We’ve talked games, but how about getting better? Do any of you consider yourself to be a generally anxious person? And if so, what are some ways you’ve found to help control anxiety when it creeps up.

Donnie

Hey friends! Is anyone else less than thrilled with the onslaught of Marvel titles coming out the pipeline? I’m ready to move on. What are some lesser known IPs you’d enjoy seeing brought to a new medium? For my choice, Brian K. Vaughn has a very quirky and captivating comic called Paper Girls that would make for an amazing animated series.

PhillyYeetSteak

Hello friends! I am lucky enough to have a ps5, but made the disappointing discovery over the weekend that i dont own a tv capable of 120 fps. I was bummed, but also realize few people care about such a luxury. So now im curious: can you please rank yourselves based on how much high quality visuals matter to you? I wonder who has the fanciest screen. PS: excited for the next deepest dive 👀

YARF

I plan on taking Friday off to play Resident Evil 8, and I’m already making a multi-layered complex lie to excuse why I won’t be at work.. this is a several hours long ritual for me, that also needs just the right amount of truth so I can avoid getting mixed up in a lie, and tell the story without guilt... Does everyone else do this type of thing to avoid work, or am I the only pervert? Sometimes I’m so paranoid I don’t even go out when I call in “sick”... and I wonder why I don’t just go in to work after all the heart ache LOLOLOL Or just tell the truth and use my approved personal time off, vacation, or “work from home days” they grant managers to use periodically... Help me...

Cade Mead

Hi team, Some games don't get official translations, but can still be played with fan translations. As a professional in the field, can Sarah comment on the quality similarity or disparity between fan efforts and studio efforts? There are some notoriously bad and famously good translations on both ends of the spectrum. Much Appreciated.

Joshua Wiljanen

I was really excited for New Pokemon Snap but I read that you can't evolve the Pokemon in this one. Was that not the best part of the original? All of my memories of the original are the excitement of seeing Dugtrio, Gyarados, and, Charizard.

Matthew Weatherley

G'day Minnmaxeroos With the rise of NFTs do you think publishers will start looking into limited edition versions or pre order bonuses for digital copies of games. Do you think this could also lead to the consumer being able to sell digital copies of games as long as the publisher gets a cut of the resale cost. Thanks.

Bryan Tylec

So a few minutes ago, I just made myself a martini (out of shear laziness) that was stirred and not shaken and I just realized that was the first time I had ever drunken one this way. So my question is, what is the most basic food or drink item that you have either never tried or only recently tried despite all your friends telling you it was excellent. For me, the martini was fine but I probably will stick with the shaken, not stirred variety, despite being a diehard Ethan Hunt fan over James Bond.

Pretty Good Printing

Hey! The official Otter Pop flavor names are wild, can you name any off the top of your head? They are: Louie-Bloo Raspberry Strawberry Short Kook (WHAT?!) Sir Isaac Lime Alexander the Grape Little Orphan Orange (Uhhh) Poncho Punch Also, can we please get a definitive tier list for these? (Orange and Grape are S tier, the rest don't matter).

Fred Dinovo

Howdy, What is everyone's "signature dish" something you have refined over the years and are proud to make for somebody/anybody? Mine is a pancake with a fried egg cooked inside, I will not elaborate further.

Holden Hintz

Hey AdMinnistrators, While playing New Pokémon snap this week I was trying to take cool photos at different times and use the editing tools to my advantage. After a bunch of duds, I caught lightning in and bottle and the discord server helped sift out the best snap I took, which I submitted to Photomode Snap and much to my surprise, ended up winning! What’s the luckiest break you’ve had with video games?

Victor Pham

What's your favorite real world food tie-in for a videogame?

The Krispy Kreme Lemur

Hey Ben and the Crew, In past generations, it was a thrill to watch traditionally 2D game series make the jump to 3D, but this transition has become extremely uncommon for game series introduced in the last 10-20 years. This got me wondering what modern game series you all would like to see make the jump to 3D (or vice versa). For example, I think a 2D “Uncharted” game would work quite well and I would love to see a 3D “Ori” game. Love the show!

umryan

I know the news is still fresh and many people have probably mentioned it in this thread already, but please talk about giant bomb on this show. I need to hear people I look up to talk about their feelings on the other people I look up to who are leaving the games media industry.

Joe Kafchinski

It's thirty minutes before bed and you're kind of hungry. You don't want to go to sleep with a giant lump of food in your tummy but you also don't want to wake up starving at 3 AM. I'm reaching for a bowl of Corn Chex. What are you all grabbing?

Jackson Arnold

Hey y’all, I have a really strong nostalgic feeling for PS2-era Square Enix menus. I’m talking Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy X, etc. There’s just something so satisfying to me about scrolling through those item and equipment screens, sometimes I even go into the settings just for fun. So anyways — What’s the most obscure, random thing that you are oddly nostalgic for?

Conner McCabe

Hi Ben, Janet, Leo, and Sarah! Have you ever discussed the pets of MinnMax? I gotta know about the lovable furballs, scaled buds, and feathered cuties in your lives. If you don’t have a pet currently, maybe name a fav from the past. Thanks as always!

Cameron

Hey gang, what would be your choice for a video game to get the Snyder Cut treatment? Basically a redone version of a game to better the experience, potentially in a way that completely transforms it into something new. It can either be a game known for its troubled development history or corporate meddling, a game you think would work well with dlc and cut content stitched into the campaign, or simply a game from a director you like that you think could use more of their style. I think the closest thing we’ve had to something like this is the final mix versions of Kingdom Hearts titles. Take care, Cohorts

InstagramExpert

Hey yall, What is your favourite place youve been which you will probsbly never visit again? It can be a place, a country or whatever.Mine is probably the inside of the pyramides in Egypt! Anyhoot love the show, goodbyeeeee!!!

Sean Mason

Hey CLC’s Have you ever stopped to think how unusual your life is? Making a good living from working in the games industry for so long and being so successful is very rare as you know. From the outside it seems like a dream job although I have no doubt it's a lot of hard work... probably even stress inducing sometimes. Best, Sean M.

Eric Dowdy

Felicitations cohorts! With all of the well-deserved excitement over Pokémon Snap this weekend I was wondering what you guys would think would be another game universe that would be interesting to play in this genre? Maybe Horizon Zero Dawn to learn more about these misunderstood robot dinosaurs? Or perhaps Metal Gear Solid 3 with all of the edible flora and fauna in that game? Can you imagine taking a 4-Star sunset picture of a reticulated python curled up all cozy with Snake snapping a soldiers neck in the background? Priceless. A quick P.S. for Ben. Forgive me if you have said so before but what does Yozetty mean? Is it a sleeper agent codename? Stage name? Did the FBI give you that title and make you grow a beard to be in the Witness Protection program? What did you do? Thanks!

James Baldwin

Hey Ben (and the rest of the gang obv) In terms of pieces of media worming their way into our vocabulary ("It felt like I was in Groundhog Day!", "Everything is going to go all Mad Max!", "It was a real Romeo and Juliet situation"), what do you think is the single most prominent example? Tetris has become the de facto term for fitting things into a small space, The Matrix was basically shorthand for slow-motion for a while and most people knew something "going all M. Night Shyamalan" meant there was a big, weird twist at the end. Pinocchio and your nose growing while lying is a decent one too, although I feel the more recent examples are more interesting than fairytales or Shakespeare (or even older stuff like the Bible or w/ever). Although as big as greek legends, the bible etc. are, I still think more recent examples are mentioned more often anyway. So what's your pick for most used and/or what are just some more big examples that you can think of? Cheers

TJ Starman

Hey crew! It’s not hard to argue that remakes of classic games have become a staple of the industry. With that in mind, I’ve been thinking lately about the value we place on nostalgia vs novelty. My question is this: is there a nostalgia-rich gaming experience from your past that you’d willingly sacrifice in favor of an alternate history where that game is being made for the first time today? This may be blasphemous to say about one of my favorites, but personally I’d have no issue giving up all of my memories of Ocarina of Time in exchange for it existing as a modern fantasy epic with the polish of today’s AAA open world games.

Rigoberto Hernandez

Hi y'all I've been playing Returnal and for the first eight hours I couldn't get pass the first boss. After that something clicked and one-shot three bosses. But now I am scared that that I am going too fast and the game will be over before I know it. This is probably the best game I've ever played and want to keep the fun going. Do you ever get this feeling? What are some things you do to keep playing the game? Go for platinum, take a shot at the leader boards?

Joshua Novalis

Hey CLCs, What are the best books on video games that you've ever read? When you all had Jason Schreier on the show a few weeks ago, I went to pick up his book on Amazon and ended up going down a rabbit trail looking for other intriguing books on game development, history, criticism, etc. Got any recommendations?

Pussel

Hi Ben and crew! What’s up with these horse mechanics?! I’m a big fan of open world games and have really enjoyed seeing the formula evolve since the PS2 days. Having played most of the big open world releases through the years I have come to realise that the games that I enjoy the most are those that have some kind of interactive traversal mechanics. In GTA and similiar vehicle driven games the player is always engaged. You avoid traffic, drift around corners etc. The same goes for games like Spider-Man, Just Cause and Death Stranding where the player has to actively partake in open world traversal. However, in games like AC Odyssey and Ghost of Tsushima where you ride horses you just steer a direction and that’s where the horse is going. It’s a glorified run faster button and feels like such a missed opportunity in making the player engage in the open world. Red Dead actively makes you press a button while riding which certainly makes it more interactive but I’m not sure that makes it more fun. What is it with these horse mechanics and has any game got it right? Or what do you think would be fun horse mechanics?
