Ben: something happened to me last Thursday when I was driving home. I had a couple of miles to go - I looked up and saw a glowing orange object in the sky, to the east! It was moving very irregularly... suddenly there was intense light all around me - and when I came to, I was home. What do you think happened to me? Question: Just got done watching the video that you and Kyle made about UFOs. And with the government announcing some kind of news next month, and interviews about UFOs popping up, I have to ask: how many of you believe in aliens? I think I do.

John Scovic

Alright MinnMax, you're at a diner/general american food/buffet sort of place and the only menu item is "Appetizer Sampler." What are the THREE appetizers you'd want to be included? They have everything and it's all good. You don't need to consider making the whole table happy or anything, this is just for you. Mozzarella sticks? Potstickers? Onion rings? Potato skins? Oysters? I eagerly await your replies.

Hello people of the internet! My kid cousin's birthday is this weekend and she is a huuuge gamer. It got me thinking about how I was influenced into gaming by my uncle when I was young with the classic Super Mario 64... do you guys remember your first game that made you say "man I love this hobby" when you were younger? What game was it and who showed it to you (if anyone)? Do you think you have influenced any youngguns into the gaming world? Thanks and stay awesome...I like colorful socks.

Fielding

Hello Friends! How do you think game review scores would change if they were written in a complete vacuum, with nobody knowing how others have rated the game? Do you think the reviews would be more varied or would there be little to no difference?

Joshua Duperoy

I’ve got a weird one for you all. Are any of you ever slightly relieved when a game you were anticipating and planning to play on day one gets middling to bad reviews? I was looking forward to checking out Biomutant, but after seeing the general consensus around the game on the internet I’ve decided to hold back for a while and maybe pick it up if it goes on sale somewhere down the line. Obviously, I want every developer to have a well received game and make all the money they can especially one making their first major title like experiment 101 , and nothing sucks more than seeing a game you were hyped for not panning out, but selfishly I can’t help feeling a little at ease that I have one less game to add to the logjam of current titles I’m still trying to get through. Am I alone here?

Games as a service have been a thing for quite some time now, so this isn't a new phenomenon, but it's something I've been thinking about a lot lately: most of my favorite multiplayer games will be completely unplayable in a few years time. And I don't mean the typical "the online servers will turn off eventually" concern, but that the multiplayer games I like are slowly being deleted by the very people who make them. Updates are constantly overwriting pieces of the game until it's no longer recognizable. Before multiplayer games were online centric, we could always pull out a game and play it just like the old days. Now, the Rainbow Six Siege game that exists today is an entirely different game than the one I fell in love with years ago. Almost every map I enjoyed is unrecognizable now, and I think the updates have been for the worse. The event that really started rubbing me the wrong way lately is Overwatch 2. It's billing itself as a more traditional sequel, but it's maintaining the ability to play PvP with owners of Overwatch 1. With the announcement of the switch to 5v5s, everything is about to change - and Overwatch 1 players have no say in the matter, even if they choose not to buy the sequel. Overwatch 1 will essentially cease to exist on the day that the sequel drops. Should we push for more WoW Classic types of releases that keep online games alive before the conent mill makes them inevitably unrecognizable? Or is it just impossible to truly archive online games going forward?

Hey CLC's, With games being digital and easier than ever to get from the comfort of your own home, I got to thinking that I haven't purchased a physical game in quite some time. Now this made me sad as I have a lot of good memories growing up and going to Walmart to oggle over the games behind the glass cases. One of my favorite memories is trying to get Darkwatch on the original Xbox, but being denied because it was rated M. By happenstance, my group of friends and I ran into another friend's brother at the mall, and talked him into buying it for us. Needless to say, I still have that copy and will always remember the story of getting it. So let's all take a trip down memory lane and recall our most favorite in store memories. Thanks, Alex

Hi gang! With two of my favorite games celebrating five year anniversaries this month (Overwatch and Dead by Daylight), I was thinking about how much I still play them despite their age. What’s the oldest game you still play on at least a semi-regular basis? Bonus points to Suriel if he gives two answers since I assume one of his is Dota. :)

Hello Dancin’ Hanson, and his friends, who also like to dance! Who benefits from 3rd party games at 1st party E3 conferences? It always upset me in the past because I felt like it took away time that could’ve gone to 1st party surprises or fun side things like Layden’s random speech about Vib-Robbon. What’s your perspective on this? Also, who pays for these appearances: the 1st or 3rd party?

John Richards

Hello to my favorite video game voices on the internet. I finished “Press Reset” this weekend, and I think what Schreier does so well is illustrate the inherent division between art and profit. This conflict certainly isn’t exclusive to video games, but it is certainly reshaping my own view of the industry and its creators. With that said, I want to propose a hypothetical question - Let’s pretend you are a a fresh college grad, ready to start your dream career in video games industry. You are given two job offers: 1. Work for a massive corporation on an established annual franchise - you would be part of a large team, have limited creative input, but you would have stability and the opportunity to work on a property you probably grew up playing. 2. Join a very small Indy team - you would be an immediate contributor to the games art, style and design, but the pay is considerably lower and the long term risks are exponentially higher. As a young creator, what would you value more: Artistic freedom or financial security?

John Higby

Good day cohorts! First of all I’m really excited to hear about Horizon Forbidden West. I loved the first one, and can’t wait to see what they do with the second one! Anyways, I’m wondering, do you all have any weird gaming habits or rituals? To give you an example, mine is that I have to check every single notification about a new data log, new weapon attachment, new ability, etc. within gaming menus. Let’s hear em! Thank you for all that you guys do!

Terry Pierson

Through a combination of circumstance, nostalgia, and genuine love, I still play my Gamecube all the time. Do you regularly play any old systems?

Nick from Atlanta

Hello Cohorts! We probably all have a game where somebody else's opinion swayed our own before going in. Maybe everybody hyped up a game, and finally playing it could never meet expectations. Or maybe it's the opposite, where everybody told you a game was terrible, but it became your favorite. Are there any games you wish you could play for the first time, but without having heard anybody else's opinion beforehand? I basically had this with No Man's Sky's original release - didn't pay attention to any marketing or hype, and I had a great time! Thanks, Nick from Atlanta.

Jordan Blayney

Hey guys! Why does it seem like most video games based on an anime or manga end up being a fighting game? I would love to see a grid based My Hero Academia RPG. Can you all think of other ways different media could be made into a unique video game?

Fred Dinovo

Howdy all, Do you have any games you wish you had played sooner?  Either when they were in the zeitgeist or maybe an earlier game in the series that is harder to go back to with improvements made in the sequels? My example is that I wish I had played Undertale when it first came out. That game is charm incarnate.  Thanks!

Bjorn Watland

In which video game world would you vacation in? Kingdom Hearts for me! - Bjorn from Saint Paul

Hey Ben and the CLCs, What is a location you want to see in a video game that hasn’t been done yet or want to see revisited in modern day fidelity?

Grizzled Gaming

Hey gang! I’m submitting this question on behalf of James Smith (aka Smithy in the discord). He would like to know, "what’s your deal, man?" Hanson, this is a long-running joke in the discord, no hostility intended. :)

RickyWinterborn

do you return food at a restaurant if it's the wrong order or served cold? Or are you too timid and just accept it and sadly eat you're lackluster meal.

Jake Z

Why don't game reviewers ever review two games in the same piece like movie critics do? Is it because it's dumb?

Steven Lambson

What’s the most popular video game setting? Where do you want to see more video games take place?

RickyWinterborn

my wife and i are addicted to collecting Nintendo handhelds. we probably have over 30 between us. do you have any irrational collecting addictions?

Jalopy Slow

Bonjour Ben, howdy Kyle, greetings Janet, and salutations Suriel! I normally look at my backlog with a sense of shame but in 2021 it has been my greatest ally. Not only has it felt like a slower year in terms of big releases, but there have been several transformative updates to games that I left behind: Disco Elysium’s complete voice acting, Metro Exodus’ fully ray traced lighting, and Ghost of Tsushima at 60Fps on PS5. It feels great to have finished these titles in their best iterations, and up next is Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade! Are there any games in your backlogs that you’re particularly excited to get back to, and do you think they'll be even better having waited to do so?

Ryan Foshee

Hey MinnMaximillionaires! I have a question for Janet! I am also a former English teacher in the middle of a career shift. Did you ever bring your love of games in to the classroom? One of my favorite memories was when we had a field day at the middle school, and one of my kids brought his Switch. I picked up a pair of joycons and proceeded to win a 1-on-1 by the skin of my teeth— it was a lot of fun and earned me some gamer cred. Do you have any experiences like that? To the other cohorts, are there any teacher or school experiences you’d like to share— gaming related or otherwise?

Keenan Horrell

Hello gang, Now that we're on the tail end of this pandemic and most of the US is returning to "normal", are there any new habits or activities you've picked up that you will continue post-covid? For me its a family poker night with my father, brother, and cousins. We started this at the beginning of lockdown and haven't stopped. Its a great time to catch up every week and we have never been closer. Its something positive that I will take away from this crazy experience we all went through.

Donnie

Hey friends! With E3 coming back in a different way this year, what’s an element you hope to see you’ve always loved about the event, and what’s something you think they could leave in the past? For example I hope they have a strong focus on games presentation with video and gameplay, like the God of War reveal, and something they could do without is all the doxing.

Jonathan Dinh

Hey Ben and the CLC's The Controller Input section of Trivia Tower made me remember fondly how I'd always read the manual of every video game I owned, when they were still included, from cover to cover. I remember some more fondly than others. My question for the crew is: What's your favorite game manual from the olden times and what modern game would have a dope manual? My personal favorite is FFVII, mostly because it was in full color and there was even a tiny walkthrough of the Bombing Mission, also I feel like Persona 5's manual would be drop-dead gorgeous. Love you guys, keep up the good work.

The Pattycake (Patrick H.)

Hey gang! I've been thoroughly enjoying Mass Effect Legendary Edition. Playing the first Mass Effect made me appreciate that Bioware made a remaster of the game rather than a remake. I find the Legendary Edition to be an improvement overall that does not take away from the original game's charm and quality. That being said, under what circumstances do you all think a remake or a remaster is more appropriate, and why?

Jordan Brown

Hey Ben and the cohorts! I'm a soon to be 29 year old college freshman going for a major in Interactive Design for Media. I was wondering if you guys, mainly Ben, had any tips or advice for me both in just general going back to college and interactive design. Thanks!

sandeezy

Hi friends! Sony is really pushing Horizon: Forbidden West as one of its major franchises and tentpole games for this generation, similarly to how they feel about God of War. The public reception seems to agree as well. I own both the first Horizon and GoW 2018 but I never really clicked with either of them. Do you guys have any big, triple A releases that the rest of the world seems to love but you just can’t get into?

Adam_CW

Hey everyone. I've been watching a lot of monster movies and I've learned something: monsters gotta eat! What's your favorite movie snack?

Ramses Garcia

I imagine people playing mass effect for the first time and loving it. I just played xenoblade chronicles for the first time and was blown away. I thought it was just Nintendo hype that people said, because they didn't have third parties. What games that you played years after they released, lived up to the hype?

Hootz

Minnmax crew! What was the first game you remember playing? And how old were you? Did your parents think your first game was awesome too?

Forrest With Two Rs

I was a good chunk into Mass Effect 2 this week when I realized the class I picked didn't let me do the build I wanted. Rather than sticking with it, I restarted to do what I thought was "fun". What are your most vivid memories of restarting a game or backing out of something you had committed to via save scumming etc?

D Bawner

Hi Minn Maxers, Last week the streaming giant Netflix announced they are in search of vetran industry executives to help expand their efforts into the videogame marketplace. What free agents are on the market right now that Netflix can approach? I think the biggest (figuratively and literally) would be Reggie Fils-Aime. He just stepped down from GameStop's board of directors earliest this year and that would be a huge win for this new gaming division.

Ladies and gentlemen! We meet here today to answer one of the universe’s least asked question. Disneyworld Nintendoworld Seaworld Amusement parks have touched all of our hearts in one way or another. Now it’s your turn to pitch the next big fun maker in the world. What amusement park you want to see her made? What IP would you like to see? And what ride would be the crown jewel? For me, catch me riding a Cuphead “tea cup” ride in Inkwell Isle One. Have a dandy fandy day party people 🎢

On a recent case investigation, I observed video of an adult human running as fast as their legs would permit, frankly, it was “PLUS ULTRA” running. I felt appalled... it was, dare I say, unbecoming, unnatural, and even alien to see. When was the last time you saw a normal, average joe/jane, non professional athlete, hauling ass? It might have been the first time I have ever seen a normal adult human running as fast as they can, in my life. Disgusting.

TheName'sPug

In honor of all the food questions, do any of you have a signature dish you are particularly proud of? I make a mean pasta al limone.

Robert Key

What are some of your favorite door designs in video games? I randomly remembered the articles from a couple of months ago discussing about how difficult it is to make doors work in video game, and wanted to show some love to gaming's gateways! I'm partial to Peach's Castle doors in Mario 64 myself.

Stephen Suminguit

Hey Crew, With the recent announcement of Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown remade in RGG Studio's Dragon Engine, do you think this is a sign that Virtua Fighter 6 is in development, or is this more of a one-off passion project since Virtua Fighter can always be played in the Yakuza games? If the franchise is planning a comeback, why then would Ultimate Showdown be exclusive to PS4? Then again, Sega does have a history of releasing timed exclusives such as Yakuza Like a Dragon on Xbox and Judgement on Playstation. I'd definitely play it if it were coming to Xbox since I don't have Playstation. How do you feel about Ultimate Showdown?

Luca Rescigno

Ladders seem to be notoriously difficult to get right in games. What games have done ladders correctly, if any?

PoorAndCurly

Hi everybody! If real time strategy, simulation and first person shooters have inherently better controls on PC, what genres or games do you believe are better played on specific consoles? Are there games that you believe are better controlled on xbox over playstation due to the controller, or vice versa?

The Diddler

Why isn't there more backlash about Skyward Sword's Amiibo DLC adding a feature to a game? When Ubisoft charges for double XP, and other features, I see outrage everywhere. Activision, EA, same. Outrage everywhere. Nintendo does it. People may briefly comment on it, and move on. No boycott threats, no greedy Nintendo. It's just "Oh well its Nintendo."

Sean Mason

Hey CLCs, It’s the end of the school year! At the time of writing this, 13 school days remain. I decided to end the year with something fun, creative writing! Welp, most of my students are in love with anime, video games, or nerd-centric stuff, so a lot of the writing sounds like fanfiction. Another student of mine is writing about Amy The Hedgehog being on trial for the murder of Sonics' new girlfriend. So my question: What are your thoughts on fanfiction? Have you ever written any? Best, Sean

Jacob Skowronek

Hey Cohorts! There are plenty of game studios in the US, Europe, and Japan. So many that it is almost as if those regions have a stranglehold on the industry. What do you think it would take for other, non-traditional regions to become major players on the world’s gaming stage? I’m thinking India, Southeastern Asia, or South America for example. Cheers! Jacob

Rickfromatlanta

With more places and opportunities opening up I'm wondering what is something you did this past quarantine year that surprised you. I remember watching CNETs Scott Stein replace his switch's outer casing and it was nerve raking. I personally replaced a bunch of light switches and outlets in my house and only got a little electrocuted.

Jason Wojnar

Kind of a dark question, but what celebrity or personal hero death affected you the most? Jack Terricloth, The lead singer for my favorite band, the World/Inferno Friendship Society, passed away two Fridays ago and I'm still in shock that I'll never go to one of their shows again. The band was far from super popular but they are legends in the North East. With love, Jason Wojnar Uhhh, I guess you could file this under the "getting better" category

Anthony Botz

Is there a long running game series that you find too intimidating to get into or is there a storied franchise that you jumped into a modern release of who's features or story beats were fresh to you but series regulars find common and uninteresting? The Legend of Heroes series is mine, nine 100 hour JRPGs with overlapping story is a heck of a hill to climb.

Joshua Novalis

Hey CLCs! Following up on the book conversation from last week, what one person from the games industry (besides Andy Mac) would you like to read a memoir from? You can't pick anyone who's already written one, but besides that, the sky's the limit! Personally, I'd love to read a deep dive into the history of JRPG development from either Yoshinori Kitase or Hironobu Sakaguchi. Tim Schafer would also be a lot of fun, as would someone like Bennett Foddy. Side-note: had a blast watching Leo play through Thief 2 last week and am always down for more Twitch streams of older games. Thanks for the great content you all keep putting out!
