Hello Ben and the ‘Horts, I recently asked the Discord community for “Five games that made you the gamer you are today.” 39 people replied for a total of 195 games. Naturally, I gathered the data on a spreadsheet and turned it into a game. Let’s play “The Games That Made Us!” Can you guess which 6 games appeared the most on the list? Ocarina of Time - 8 Final Fantasy VII - 8 Super Mario Bros 3 - 5 Dark Souls - 5 Super Mario World - 4 Metal Gear Solid - 4 Here’s some bonus fun facts from the data: Three franchises had 4 or more unique games appear on the list: The Legend of Zelda - 6 (OG, LTTP, Ocarina, Majora’s Mask, Wind Waker, BotW) Super Mario - 5 (SMB, SMB 3, World, 64, Galaxy) The Elder Scrolls - 4 (Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim) Only one Pokemon game made the list, and it was picked 3 times: Pokemon Gold/Silver The most recent game to receive multiple votes was The Last of Us (3 votes) Only one other Final Fantasy game appeared on the list besides Final Fantasy VII - Final Fantasy IV with one vote. Diddy Kong Racing received more votes than Donkey Kong Country, which was the only other Donkey Kong game that made the list.

Hello MinnMaxamillions, I was wondering what the most interesting way to upgrade a character y’all have found is?

Forrest With Two Rs

What genre do you think is most underserved by the industry right now? I.e. what wave of game types like this year's Left For Dead-likes do you think we'll see coming in the next year or two?

The Sideline Crowd

I've been playing Breath of the Wild for the first time since it originally came out. I had the fun the first time, but I didn't enjoy it as highly as others because I missed a lot of the conventional Zelda mechanics (i.e. dungeons). However I've been having a blast this second time around and appreciating things more and more than I originally did. What is a video game or piece of media that you've grown to appreciate more than the first time you experienced it?

Jordan Blayney

Hey Ben and the Crew! If you guys were to create a RPG team using characters from any video game who would you guys pick? Thanks!

Chris Gillar

Howdy Cohorts, With the conversation around Roblox Survivor this week, I think it’s finally time to ask… Which video game characters would do best on Survivor?

Mike Po

Hello Ben and cohorts! I want to ask about long games, particularly the bad rap they get in today's discourse. More and more I'm starting to think I'm an outlier. I love long games (e.g. Divinity Original Sin, Dragon Quest 11, Red Dead 2, Witcher 3, etc.), and when I finish a good long game, I feel so much more satisfied compared to finishing 3 or 4 smaller games. If the gameplay is good, and you enjoy being in the game's world, what's the problem with a 50+ hour experience? Is it people's shortening attention spans? General impatience? Social media's inherent need to move on to the next thing within a day or two? Feel free to mock me and call me a freak if that's what I am. Love the show and keep up the good work!

Nick West

With Leo's recent foray into Roblox, when was the last time that you were surprised by an otherwise popular/giant game that you had previously ignored and/or written off? Mine might not be exactly on this level, but I totally ignored the FIFA series until after I had graduated college and now I really enjoy them casually! Thanks for the thoughts MinnMax'ers!

Thom Blackburn

How many more ways can Ubisoft not make Splinter Cell?

Steven Herrera

Hello Ben and the MinnMax Crew! I recently finished playing Disgaea 4, which is part of a series of strategy RPG games known for excessive grinding. Disgaea 4 in particular had me resetting the game several times in a row in order to get certain NPCs to spawn, resetting maps to get weapon duplications, and grinding hundreds of floors in the game’s Item World. During a couple of these grinding sessions, I had to stop and ask myself “Why am I doing this absurd grind?!”. The Disgaea games are all about watching numbers go up and I love it, but sometimes I have to question my life choices during the grind. What are the most absurd grinds you’ve ever done in video games? Are there any games that had you doing more than just killing the same mobs for drops? Were there any unusual grinding activities that you have participated in?

Victor Pham

Is the corporate usage of a "punk rock" aesthetic the antithesis of punk rock? For me it feels kind of gross. The new Ubisoft game Tom Clancy's XDeviant claims to draw inspiration from punk rock but as a Games as a Service FPS, it feels like the furthest thing from punk.

Tactical Dreamer

When Skyward Sword originally came out, I beat the final boss without using the lightning mechanic. I thought it was the most insanely hard fight in zelda history, it took tons of potions and fairies to finally overcome him. I actually enjoyed the challenge, but realized it was a challenge of my own creation when my brother beat the game the following week and used the lightning. Boy I felt dumb. Do y'all have any good examples of doing something wrong in a game and only finding out about it after putting the game down?

King Promethus

The Final Fantasy XIV community released a Census result recently and grew 250,000 players since April, hitting an active player count of 1.2 million players. From all perspectives that definitely sounds like a successful MMO. But, can any of the Cohorts who don't already know guess what World of Warcraft's highest active player count was at its peak? 12 million. Really puts into perspective how staggeringly popular WoW was in its prime. Do any of you have any early MMO memories?

Jeeo Banogy

Hey Minn Max crew! Was there ever an upgrade or power-up that you rolled back or disregarded because you didn't like how it changed gameplay?

Ben Shively

Wow! Wasn’t that trailer for the new Dead Space amazing? (I’m hoping that by talking about it enough, that there will actually be a new Dead Space) While EA and similar companies do occasionally make games that aren’t sure fire successes (It Takes Two), do you think we’ll hit a point where these companies exclusively make their giant money maker franchises? Like a dystopian future where EA only makes sports games and Activision only makes Call of Duty?

TheUnchartedWolf

Hey Minnmax Legion. Just like any other game collector I have a massive backlog at the moment of over 100 games, which I painfully keep adding to because I'm weak. The problem is that I hate playing multiple games at once. It feels like a ritual whenever I start a new game. I must ask you guys, is there something wrong with me? I always hear about people playing 3-4 games at the same time and the very thought of that terrifies me. Thanks for all you do!

Ryan

Hey Cohorts, can anyone explain what the “Comic Mischief” on the ESRB label means? The other explainers for why a game got the rating it did makes sense but comic mischief is one that feels too nebulous to really be used to explain anything. Is it just cartoon hijinks, slapstick comedy, or a way to label violence that isn’t really gory?

Owen S

Hey folks, So this one is kinda philosophical I guess. Is irony/sarcasm/satire worth it anymore? Personally I love sarcastic humor but especially with social media it seems like 50% or more people just take it all literally OR people are ironic and self aware to a toxic extent that makes people feel bad about liking things. Is the misinformation and toxicity that comes from this style of humor worth it? I’m starting to lean towards no.

Grizzled Gaming

Hey gang! What do you think was the last major innovation in gaming?

Cath

Are you gonna watch the olympics ?

Uncle Longfellow

Hey all, I struggle to complete battle passes because I don't have the time to invest in them, but this past weekend my friends and I participated in the Pokemon Go Fest 2021 event, and for the cost of a $5 virtual ticket I caught a ton of shiny & legendary pokemon, earned a ton of EXP on my account, and overall had a blast and really felt like I got my money's worth for 2 days of play. Do you think other popular games could or should implement events like these? I know I'd be much more willing and able to dedicate a weekend to a game I like than an hour or two every single day. Thanks for all your great content!

IanTClark

What non-social media related app do you use on your phone the most?

Tyler Sticka

Hello, Ben and friends! Are any of you surprised by the Steam Deck announcement's divisiveness so far? I owned an open source "Pandora" Linux handheld a decade back that cost quite a bit more, and GPD Win handhelds sell for a thousand clams... where's all the salt coming from for a (comparably) more affordable handheld gaming PC?

CalebMurray

Hello pod crew. I know this is more a MinnTrax thing, but I recall Hanson mentioning them several times so I just got to know. Has Hanson or anyone else listened to Modest Mouses newest album The Golden Casket? If so thoughts. I like it quite a lot its a big return to form for them imo and I can't stop listening to it. Thanks love the show and MinnMax!

Brady Easter

Hey MinnMaxers! I've been saving this question for when I know Kyle would be on for questions because I seem to connect with his answers a lot. He's a good dude. (Obviously everyone else is too and I'm excited to hear all your answers.) For nearly 4 years, I had Kayne & Lynch 2: Dog Days sitting in my library after Xbox gave it away through Games with Gold. Finally, near the end of March this year, I sat down and went through the whole game. And I gotta tell ya... it was not good. This sparked a question on backlog shame. No, not the normal kind where there's some amazing game you haven't played yet. I'm talking about the TERRIBLE games that are 100% NOT worth your time and yet you still plan on playing them someday, no matter how many times you hear how bad they are. Do any of you have games like that in your backlog? CONFESS!! Brady Easter Edmond, OK (in case you're curious about that)

Scott Castro

Hey Ben, Kyle, Leo, and Janet, It's been a minute since I have written in! My wife and I are expecting the arrival of our first child (which should explain my radio silence in the Community recently). There's research to suggest that mothers are far more prominent in children's books compared to dads, and I have seen that borne out in the books that we have been gifted by friends and family. Then I thought about our favorite medium: video games. Beyond Kratos (and only recently), I really had to stretch to think of prominent Dad characters in video games, as main characters or otherwise. So tell me cohorts, who are some of your favorite iconic video game daddies?!?!?

MyNameIsDan

When was the moment you realized that you were taking the hobby of playing video games more seriously than the average person?

Christian Jimenez

Hello, Why do we get so attached to the idea of certain things being canon or not in our fictional stories. With Loki exploring the idea of the "one" true timeline it seems better to embrace a vision of a multi universe approach? Thanks.

Mack Dack

Why are there so few MMOs these days? Live service games seem to be the evolution of the MMO, but what do you think attributed to this change? Lifestyle? I got to thinking this since the latest Blizzard drama and the surge of FF14 players. Maybe a comeback?

Scott Hebert

Hello, Minnimus Maximizers. Last week, there was a question about "the best thing you can't believe no one else has heard of." For that, I submit the Steam game "Stone Story RPG." I first saw Stone Story RPG in the Indie Megabooth at PAX West, 2018. In a valley of cell shaded, pixelated, and 16-bit retro graphics, this title INSTANTLY caught my eye. It's a side scroller done almost entirely in white ASCII characters on a solid black background. I grew up playing Adventure on the Atari 2600, so this way, way retro graphic design clicked with me instantly. Whenever I had previously thought about ASCII graphics, never in my life did I think I would see a character canoeing across a moonlit lake without having to stretch my imagination at all to figure out what the designer was intending. I played through the entire demo, briefly chatted with Gabriel, the designer, and expressed my absolute amazement in this thing he created. I picked up the game in early access and instantly dove in with wonder to see what other things he had created which weren't in the one level demo. My question is this: what gaming experiences have left you glowing with feelings of wonder and possibility?

Logan Krause

Hey MinnMaxers, About 20 minutes through the previous Council meeting, I realized I was wearing tennis shoes, grilling, and listening to the show while admiring my freshly cut lawn. What the heck happened to me?!? I’m 25 doing this stuff!! What is your guys most “boomer” or “dad” moment ? Thanks, Logs 😎🤙

G'day Cohorts! Your Crazy ex, The Alphabet, has taken you all hostage, and is forcing you to choose a single letter, and you can only play games in your steam library that begin with that letter! Which letter do you choose? Games that begin with 'a' or 'the' are counted from the next letter, EG The Escapist's is counted under the letter E For context I thought of this beause with the recent release of Deaths Door, I thought for sure 'D' would be most common starting letter in my steam library of 344 games, with so many 'Dead', 'Dark', 'Death' & 'Dragon' games. It came in at second at 31 games, second to 'S' with 55 games! The 15 Star Wars Games I own on Steam really helped that to an comfortable lead

wittynicknamehere .

Hello, Cohorts. Have any of you experienced the phenomenon where you play a game, get your fill of it, and then are stunned by it being its own subgenre of game? Ages ago, my ex urged me to try out one of the old Temple Run games on her phone, and I thought it was a cute little diversion, then didn't think about it again until I was bewildered by the discovery of the "endless runner" genre. I don't want to sound like a jerk, and say "there's already been a game like that, why do more?" But endless runners seemed like such a one-trick pony to me that I am, to this day, surprised that it's carved out its own niche in the many categories of game out there.

The Zelda HD remasters have each released ten years after the original (Wind Waker - 2003 to 2013, Twilight Princess - 2006 to 2016, Skyward Sword - 2011 to 2021). Do you expect to see a Breath of the Wild remaster in 2027? What features would you want added, and would you buy it all over again?

Fatt Mish

A big hello to the Minnmax crew! One of the coolest advancements in games in the last handful of years has been the implementation of procedurally generated levels. Do you guys and gals think that we'll have advancements with other generated content, like procedurally generated enemies, weapons or maybe even sound and music? Do you think this could be implemented effectively? Thanks for the great show! ~Mars

Andrew George

Hi MinnMax! Have you ever connected with someone through a game you never would have expected the other person to have any interest in? For me and my cousin we were very different types of people. I was the typical nerd interested in comics and videogames and him more of a jock primarily interested in lacrosse and skateboarding. Somehow, we managed to bond over hours and hours of co-op Dynasty Warriors 3 on the PS2. I never would have guessed he would also dig the historical setting or cartoonish action moves that sent armies of enemies flying but somehow this weird game formed a special memory in our childhoods that we shared together. Thanks

Clemens Zobel

With Dead Space hopefully making a comeback this generation, what are some other game series that skipped a generation (or more) that you would like to see again? I'm hoping we'll get another Sly Cooper game this generation.

Cade Mead

Hi team! When was the last time you felt that child like sense of excitement and wonder, and what caused it?

Stephen Suminguit

Hey Crew, I've been looking forward to trying Cris Tales on Gamepass since I pre-installed it months ahead. What are your thoughts on it so far? Seeing as it's day 1 on Gamepass, are any of you playing it anywhere else?

Sincerly, Eric

Considering Cris Tales is out this week and has a very difficult (to me) opening, made all the more difficult if you attempt to grind it. What are the groups thoughts in RPGs about Leveling? Do you grind until the rest of the game you feel like a true Warrior hero? Do you avoid Field Monsters in an attempt to stay under leveled and have more difficulty to the game? (Seriously, people did this for DQ11) What are some of your thoughts? Thanks and as always you all are awesome.

Dru Marcus

Hey hey folks! I’m current playing Immortals Fenyx Rising and one thing I’m thankful for doing early was turning off all of the UI to declutter the screen. I was shocked that Ubisoft put several environmental cues in this game to make exploration inviting without making me feel overwhelmed with all the map markers. What games benefit most from turning off any UI that doesn’t exist natively in the game world?

Hootz

I started playing super Metroid for the first time recently in preparation for Metroid dread in October. Ive gotta say, I don't think I would have made it this far without the help of modern conveniences like save states, rewinds, and online guides. I understand the appeal in trying to figure out where to go next all on your own, but I do wish the game gave me a little more direction than it does. I am enjoying the game despite its ambiguity. But this made me think about the time of the game's release, when there were simply fewer games to play than there are now. Had I played the game then, I may have been willing to power through it without the time saving tools I mentioned before. What games would you spend more time with today if there were fewer games to play/report on? Also. Did you know you can unequip the morph ball? (Why is this a thing?) I spent way too long trying to escape that dumb room. Please don't take my gamer card away.

Garrett Becker

Yo Benz and the other bros, My girlfriend and I are getting back into VR. I have an oculus quest 2 and it’s awesome. However, my girlfriend has only one arm. I’ve noticed that a lot of games won’t let her play because of this. What are some good VR games that can be played one handed?

Empiric Unicorn

Hey CLCs! Here are some more: "If real life had video game options". What would you choose for the following: 1. Auto parrying, on or off? 2. Story mode, on or off? 3. Always run, on or off? 4. Third person mode, on or off?

Gigglesby

I hate that this got taken from you Hanson, so here you go. Can everyone please give us your best OLD-FASHIONED “sheesh.” Please decide amongst yourselves who is the best sheesher.

whitemex

What's the best idea Kramer ever had in all of Seinfeld? I'm partial to the build your own pizza restaurant

Nick from Atlanta

Hey Cohorts, Another horrifying story has broken about a culture of abuse in the gaming industry, this time at Activision. What can we as consumers do to help combat this? I know I can "speak with my wallet" by not purchasing their products, but does the drop in the sea of my minimal purchases really affect anything? How can I respectfully make my voice known about this (and other things) being the reason I don't support a company? Thanks, Nick from Atlanta

Joseph Dowdy

*not a question for the show* have you thought about doing anything special for the 100th Episode of The Minnmax Show? I think its coming soon, right?

The Pattycake (Patrick H.)

What up, y'all? I just rolled credit's on Death's Door and absolutely loved my time with it. Going to go for %100 completion because I want to get as much out of this game as I can. My question for you all is, what makes a game an "Indie Darling"? Is it the size of the team, quality of the game, popularity of the game? What are some of your "indie darlings"? Stay awesome!

Mark Letarte

Hello Ben and the N’s. I have a question for all of you. If you could go back in time and tell something game related to your younger self, what would it be? After some recent news, I think I’d tell my younger self to save an unopened copy of Mario 64 so I could sell it in 30 years for a million bucks.
