When Kendra told me to get on the cannon in this chunk, I had vietnam flashbacks to chapter 4. Luckily, this time it was much easier and I did it on the 1st try instead of the 10th.

Hey all! Dead space is great.

Spencer Botine

Dammit, the workbench jump scare got me! As soon as I walked up to the bench and heard the enemy creeping in the background, I was fully expecting and preparing for a “Last of us Pt. II” moment of being ripped from the bench mid-upgrade. When nothing happened, I released my defenses, only to be attacked immediately after exiting it - curses!

Dudley Kyle Lawhorn

I got so frustrated at having to plant the distress beacon in Chapter 7 because my dumb self didn't realize I had to run to the outside of the cargo hold and ended up dying 4 times to those sweeping arms.

Jordan Edmond

Chapter 10 is by far the best chapter in the game environment wise. All of the unitoligist iconography, the fancy executive suites, and a Zero G basketball court!

Morne

Is it just me or is it obvious, throughout the entire game, that Nicole is a hallucination inside Isaac's head? It is so weird how they try to play off like some big plot twist. When the big reveal happens and Kendra tells us that Nicole is dead, I was just sitting there thinking: "Yeah, obviously".

Colin Mahovlich

Sillypug45 from the discord: I really love the final chapter of the game. Going down to the colony to fight the hive mind was a neat visual change of pace and a very enjoyable boss fight. Got some Resident Evil boss fight vibes from it.

Ryan Del Vecchio

Hi yall, The hivemind boss to this day is just one of the coolest bosses. Just visually stunning and has such a sick design. I love Dead Space 2 more and boy, was that last boss a letdown. Lastly, just wanted to add that I know Zach says he only added subtitles to the games but I distinctly remember him from whenever I saw photos of Visceral Studios. He was always in the pictures!! You could have told me the guy was the game director and I would have believed you. Regardless, I'm glad he's part of the discussion, seems like a nice and humble person.

Victor Pham

What are your thoughts on the build-up to the regenerating Hunter in Chapter 10? I thought the all of the small appearances and stuff leading up to the actual chase created a really effective sense of dread, and I also appreciated that the actual gameplay portion of it didn't overstay its welcome and so the tension was maintained and finally killing it felt really cathartic.

Ryan

Hey all, hope it is okay to make a comment about the deepest dive itself here. In regards to Isaac being a silent protagonist, and silent protagonists in general, speaking is not the only means to give a character agency. Isaac could have been someone non verbal, such as communicating with sign language or body motions. Not trying to call anyone out here, just want to put out that being silent doesn’t mean you can’t speak.

I had been wondering why my first half play through was almost 7 hours, but after listening to the first discussion, I realized it's because I wasn't aware of the objective guidelines and have instead been navigating via the map. I'd say I've spent at least an hour in that thing! I also wanted to shout at Zach Mumbach for adding a fun behind the scenes wrinkle to the dive. Funny enough, last night after finishing the episode, I sat down to read some Press Reset only to realize I was on the chapter about Zach's career.

AnotherRobot

I wonder if the remake will change the story because I don't think the original's plot twists at the end will have the same impact when it releases. I understand, "Cut off their limbs." But if I blow their head off, I feel like the necromorphs shouldn't be able to track and directly attack me. I don't care if they flail around and cause damage or even randomly run around and cause damage, but they shouldn't follow. I don't think I've ever said or thought a final boss fight was fun. This one was fun. What I needed to do was clear. The game gave me plenty of resources and opportunities to execute. Without requiring controller gymnastics or hoops to jump through, I took it down in one go. I think this is percisely how a boss fight should be.

Orryn Echols

Has anyone gotten late game fatigue yet? Today I played chapters 8-9-10 And at this point the only thing new the game is giving me is enemy types, puzzles, and two mini games. I feel like I’m getting trolled by the devs, more than I’m finding new mechanics and system.

Clint Farley

I missed the write in for part one, but I was surprised no one mentioned the episodic animated comic they released over the six weeks up to launch. It was a great way to build up the story for what happened on the planet with the discovery of the marker. I also really like that all material outside of the games is canon as well. Reading “Dead Space: Martyr” and learning about the original Marker found on Earth, as well as the story of Michael Altman, was really interesting. I’m also one of those few who likes DS3 because of the lore, and that damn DLC cliffhanger ending.

DarkFishDays

Has anyone noticed that if you backtrack through areas, when there’s no current goal asking you to backtrack, that there are no new enemy encounters? It’s a nice break to return to a store or get stasis restored knowing you won’t be attacked. But it does pull me out of the horror experience a bit. Would you prefer if encounters were randomized?

Joe Holaska

In Chapter 9, there's a really impressive little moment right after the section where you fling the glowing orbs into space. As soon as you walk into the next corridor, you see a creature quickly dart off to Isaac's left down a hallway. When you walk up to where it was standing and turn to face toward the direction it ran, the lighting is set up to cast Isaac's shadow on the wall on the left. It actually made me jump slightly because I was already wary of what was on my left side due to watching the creature run that way, so whoever came up with the idea to make a dark shadow appear at exactly that spot in the player's field of vision was brilliant.

CalebMurray

I don't know how common knowledge this little easter egg is nowadays but. Chapter 1: New Arrivals Chapter 2: Intensive Care Chapter 3: Course Correction Chapter 4: Obliteration Imminent Chapter 5: Lethal Devotion Chapter 6: Environmental Hazard Chapter 7: Into the Void Chapter 8: Search and Rescue Chapter 9: Dead on Arrival Chapter 10: End of Days Chapter 11: Alternate Solutions Chapter 12: Dead Space Take the first letter of each chapter and you get - Nicole is dead.

Peter Slater

I know you briefly talked about it in the first part but how scary did you actually find the game? I found the tension and suspense was often the scariest thing and then like Jacob mentioned when you actually get attacked the systems are so good that most situations are fairly ok to deal with.

Harrison Holt

I want to use my comment to give a huge shout out to Z Ball. First, what a great idea to take advantage of the Zero G and Kinesis mechanics. It’s a bit klunky but it’s fine for a fun side thing. But my favourite thing about it is that the challenge is easy. If you just want to get the power node and leave then you can beat the minimum score quite easily. But if you want to relax, have a bit of fun, and do some wacky stuff in Zero G then you can, which is a welcome break from the stresses of the main game.

Danro

I really loved playing through this again. The presentation and sound are top notch but the combat/areas did get a little repetitive. I hope in any remake they improve the puzzles and variety of combat and interactions.

Brainfreeze

I enjoyed the back half of the game, but the samey environments and enemies definitely started to get to me by the end. The Dead Space fundamentals are superb but it doesn't manage to hit the level of variety and twists we see in its inspirations (Resident Evil 4, System Shock 2, Bioshock, Half Life 2). Landing on the planet was nice, but it didn't really change things too meaningfully.

Jordan Holmdahl

I appreciated that the escape pod that Hammond so casually fired off in chapter four actually paid off and had extremely dire repercussions. The developers sure got me because I definitely assumed that was a one-off jump scare, and instead they were setting up a great and crushing moment hours later with the Valor coming out of nowhere and ramming into the Ishimura. I loved how powerless that moment made me feel, Isaac had no chance to stop that ship even though he was manning a powerful canon and had just taken down another enormous monstrosity. Such a great way to tear the rug out from under players again.

Jason Camerano

As Kendra is bug-squished then flung to the side, an audible flat lining sound can be heard prefixed by a crackling sound similar to that of a radiation Geiger Counter (or most likely comms static). Since this game pays homage to many different movies and games, this seemed so reminiscent of the death sound in Half Life. Did you all find other small things like this?

Kraid Belmont

As a whole, Dead Space never has a boring moment . In Chapter 12 specifically, it really climaxes. Wave after wave of monsters while escorting the mark, a zero G gravity tunnel that disorients the player to no end, a nice trek back to where we start this chapter, a gross giant shooting gallery boss and to make sure not to be boring we get a final jump scare with Nicole. Make us whole again. (Just For you Ben) Thanks for doing this so I was able to replay this fantastic game with fantastic people to listen to into a deep dive.

Jeorin

My favorite aspect of the game is how necromorphs attack in areas you feel safe. Save zones, the store, the upgrade bench, etc. When I got ambushed in the Z Ball arena, I legit jumped. Really caught me off guard, because I thought for sure it would be clear of enemies. I think the only place in the game you never get attacked are the tram stations, perhaps because it could interfere with loading to a new area?

Danro

Did anyone else think that the Hammond death scene was somewhat silly. I had to watch a man be beaten, impaled, and ripped apart for a painfully long time because apparently nothing in my arsenal of fully upgraded monster busting weapons couldn't break a pane of glass.

neuroflare

It was fairly common knowledge after the game released, but some folks may not know that Isaac Clarke was named after Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke.

Beau!

This game is real wet.

Matt Lynch

I was a fool to think I was done with jump scares during the final cut scene. Man that got me good

Logan K

Kendra's deliberate attempts to make Isaac mistrust Hammond throughout the entire game perfectly set the stage for the big reveal in the game's final moments. First, she mentions something about her "department" searching for the marker for a long time while Kyne is prepping the shuttle. Hinting that she is some sort of deep cover operative. I thought that this was so well done. I audibly shouted "It was you!", at my monitor when Kendra mentioned that she already knew about Nicole's death before their shuttle even landed on the Ishimura. SUCH A GREAT MOMENT

Erin T.

It didn’t really hit me until this last half, but WOW is this game *brown*! It still works, since rusty, grimy metal is kind of the vibe here, but it really highlights just how influential Resident Evil 4 (and it’s color palette) was on this era of gaming. Was this something that the Dead Space 2 and 3 teams consciously moved away from? Comparing 2 and 3 to 1, there’s an obvious shift away from the brown palette and towards more color. Would love to hear Zach’s take on this, and the panel’s thoughts! PS - this was my first time playing DS1, and it was super fun to play alongside such big fans of the game. Extra thanks to Kate, Zach and Jacob for being such amazing, insightful guests! (And you too, Kyle and Ben)

Nick!!

TW: the rooms in the latter half of the game where you discover groups of Unitologists who committed suicide always disturbed me. It’s a very unsettling kind of scare compared to the louder jump scares. In general, I like the way the game slowly builds up the Unitology mythos

Nick!!

I recommend dipping into the expanded media that came out around the same time including the animated film Dead Space: Downfall. Did anybody else check out the movies or comics before or plan to after this?

Nick!!

Dead Space creator Glen Schofield is now running Striking Distance Studios making, what he calls m, a spiritual successor to Dead Space. Having now played the first game, what elements of it do you hope they bring to The Callisto Protocol?

RiskyChrisP

I found Hammond’s death to be pretty disappointing. It felt like it would have at least made more sense for him to die in the greenhouse area, but it seems odd that he somehow recovered from that just to confidently get killed right in front of Isaac where he can’t do anything about it. If he had to come back, I think it would have been way more interesting if he died and was possessed by some super strong necromorph as a boss.

Nick!!

I love the in-world explanation for the super fast enemies that appear on The Valor. Apparently humans equipped with a stasis module turn into the “twitchers”.

G-Max Thoeren

In chapter 8 when you're riding the tram and run into the body hanging from the ceiling, my game totally glitched out. The body ragdolled and stretched all over the place, making what would've been a serious scare feel super goofy. Anyone else run into glitchy stuff like that?

James Martin

To sum up this game in one word I'd use 'seamless'. The real time events, live UI and all the small details and systems make it truly one of the most immersive games ever made, as well as one of the least 'gamey'.

Shawn Mills

What was going in with the scene where Nicole opens the door for you on the mining deck? If she's just a hallucination she shouldn't be able to open the door and the necromorphs shouldn't be able to attack her. I did appreciate the smart UI choice to have her health bar represented on her back while you try to keep the necromorphs off of her.

Miguel Medjai

Love this game and the little hints it provides during the interaction. I have already beaten the game so I knew about Nicole but Kendra mentions seeing her brother and Kyne talking to someone, as well as one of the audio logs mentioning seeing their family. Is perhaps one of the first signs of the insanity is seeing someone that is not suppose to be there?

Miguel Medjai

Also I did yell out a get over here when I recalled Kendra's ship

YARF

So Kendra, a highly intelligent mastermind who coordinated everything behind the scenes, forgot that an engineer who single handedly defeated a necromorph infestation with power tools, and also fixed the ship by himself, wouldn’t have the skill or presence of mind to recall the ship, using the SAME method that they had JUST used to recall it in the first place? *shrug* There’s Always Peng! What is Peng anyway in the Dead Space universe? Don’t tell my wife I asked, I’m on thin ice, as you can imagine!

Logan Young

I am grinding through Dead Space. Thanks Ben and crew for pushing me to finally play, but gosh I am scared and want to cry. I only play feel good games, so this is a change of pace.

Clemens Zobel

The flamethrower is actually pretty good! I ignored it when I first played but this time it was one of my mains. Sure it consumes ammo like crazy, but pump enough fire into a necromorph and all its limbs pop off. I killed every brute with the flamethrower. All it took was a full tank and minimal effort. I even used it against the hive mind, using the long range alt fire. And when you fully upgrade its damage, the fire turns blue!

Leo’s Immersion

Hey all! Did you know that when using the ripper you can use kinesis on your blade to draw it to you, then shoot it back out to end range without losing your blade?

AnAttackCorgi

I JUST realized if you shine your flashlight on tall lockers with the ‘C’ Concordance Extraction Corp logo, the C will  turn green.

AnAttackCorgi

On that Chapter 10 On that Z ball mini game, the sound designers replaced Isaacs usual boot stoops with sneaker sqeak noises on the little wood pads. Nice touch! The circle in the Concordance ‘C’ logo also changes to a basketball

AnAttackCorgi

I love how this game messes with your expectations. I love how you expect an attack on the Chapter 8 tram to and from the comms array, so the devs just throw a baby necromorph in the way and it immediately gets run over. Did you shoot the dangling body on the way over?

JonCarlo Curiale

What’s up! Haven’t seen people talk about this but if you stand under any dripping water (or brown sludge in chapter 10) the liquid reacts to falling in Isaac’s suit perfectly. If it hits him on his helmet or arm it reacts, so cool they could do that in 2008!
