It's Olympics season, cohorts, and I have a similarly topical question for you: if the video game genres were Olympic events, and developers were countries... What developer would be the overall medal winner? What developers would consistently get the gold in which events? What were some surprise 'upsets' in video game Olympic history? From the top of my head, for example: Ubisoft would clearly be the 'Open World' favorite most year, but maybe that title was stolen by Nintendo in 2017 with Breath of the Wild. Hanson, feel free to edit the wording of this question however you'd like. Thanks!

would you rather "walking sim" games be literal walking sims instead of tacking on simple gameplay mechanics? we started a plague tale last night, and while we're intrigued enough to keep playing, the introduction of the crafting table kind of made me groan. to me, if a game isn't going full tomb raider, i'd rather not spend time on the typical upgrade trees and such. i loved last of us 2, but i honestly could've just watched the entire game. the gameplay/upgrades never felt real enough for me to care or invest, i was just rushing through to get to the next cutscene.

Hello Bennie Hanson and the Hansonites! My wife & I were binge watching Seinfeld on Hulu before it left. That show has soooo many iconic moments. I’m curious what everyone's favorite bit, gag, joke, line, or episode is from a show with so many to choose from? My wife & I used “These pretzels are making me thirsty.” as code when our kids were little and generally being annoying. lol

With the the stars aligning so beautifully as they did with Skyrim’s release on 11/11/11. February 22 2022 will be a Tuesday. That is a date a game absolutely needs to come out. My question for the panel is what game do you want to see come out on 2/22/22 or 2’sday. ( could be anygame coming out in the future)

PoorAndCurly

Hey gang, If you had to suddenly present a TED talk with no warning or preparation on a topic not directly related to video games, what would your talk be about?

Kyle Silva

What is the most expensive thing you have ever broken? I once toppled a hanging chandelier with my foot.

G-Max Thoeren

Hey cohorts, If you had to choose a game that everyone else on the planet was then required to play, what would it be?

Brian Baxter

Hey MinnMax Is the Xbox brand inherently not special? Franchise like Halo, Forza and Gears seem long in the tooth. A new entry from Psychonauts doesn’t draw the anticipation of Ratchet or a Nintendo platformer. Even an acquisition like Bethesda, was accomplished as Fallout 76 was a failure and Arkane struggled to find success. So I wonder, is the Xbox brand not special, unlucky, mismanaged? It’s been a while since they had a game as exiting as the Titanfall launch. Love the show, Brian

WelcomeToMinnmax. gif The Annapurna Showcase got me thinking... what are some reliably arthouse publishers in different media? Obviously Annapurna for games and movies, but what about books, comics, anime, etc? Thanks! -Thom

Hey MinnMax, Have you ever made a longshot prediction and it came true? Do you have any longshot predictions for any future games that you want to make right now? Here’s mine- Breath of the Wild 2 will connect Breath of the Wild (the last chronological Zelda game) and Skyward Sword (the first chronological Zelda game), so that the Zelda timeline officially becomes a giant loop. It will also be called Wild Skies. Place your bets now, folks.

Dan

Hey MinnMax! Any word on more tabletop coverage?

Hello Cohorts and special guest Haley! I have a 3 part query for our special guest if I may: Part 1: Could you please shamelessly plug your pet portraits business? Our portrait of Yoshi [the goodest boy] is an absolute family favorite prominently displayed in our living room. Your art is fantastic and needs to be publicly acknowledged as such. [Yoshi's portrait: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMdTABxTd/ ] Part 2: Could you please shamelessly plug your podcast Game and Makeup? The concept is solid gold, and the execution with the wonderful chemistry between you and Mike makes for incredible entertainment. The Dark Souls episode is a personal favorite of a show that is fantastic and needs to be publicly acknowledged as such. Part 3: are you a lawyer yet?! Thanks fam! -Crayter PS: Thanks for all the memories, I really enjoyed being able to sing that weird cover song for you guys. Never stop sniping.

Hello normal socks wearing persons, What is one game that you were suprised to discover liking? Example: Kyle Hilliard likes and plays Roblox

So what's up with people constantly thinking we are having "dry spells" of gaming for 2020/21? Is it COVID or are people actively missing out on how many great games are coming out almost every month? Maybe it's a generational thing where we've become so used to Triple AAA (in my best Jim Sterling impression) dominating every month? What do y'all think?

micspam

Is Hayley a lawyer yet?

After playing the Wild at Heart I realized I love the pikmin mechanic of having little workers do tasks for you. I know RTS games have been doing that for years but on that scale is such a delight. With tinykin and Kena bridge of spirits scheduled to release next year; it seems this genre of games is making a serious comeback. What’s a one off mechanic you want to see return into the gaming landscape?

Noah D.

Hi Y’all! I spent 30+ hours (a new personal record) over the weekend playing the Halo Infinite tech preview. Needless to say I enjoyed the heck out of it and my excitement for the final game is higher than I ever thought it would be. My question is, have you played a beta or tech preview that had the complete opposite reaction to what I’m experiencing with Infinite? Where you ever super excited for a game to only have that excitement diminish after playing an early build? Keep on keeping on, Noah D.

Hello all MinnMax MinnMaxers. What is the best most versatile fruit? Is it low key bananas? I think it might be bananas.

James Ford

G'day Cohorts and Haley! Often on the show you have talked about a game being a good Podcast game, but are there any other personal genres that you apply to games? I have coffee/ morning games, that I think are best played with my morning coffee. Chicory is probably the best recent example of this.

Hey Cohorts! What is the most versatile unisex shampoo? What’s your go to brand ?

Hello MinnMax! When playing through Red Dead 2, I completed as much of it as I could; finding all the dinosaur bones, finding all the dreamcatchers, etc. Eventually, I gave up completing the game on my own, using online resources for literally everything. For every game since, I look online to overcome every slight challenge. When does the panel use online guides or decide to stick with it solo?

Zach Killian

Hello MinnMax! I'm excited for the Dead Space remake, but it got me thinking why not just make a new game in the series? With all these remakes, why don't developers create a new entry in a series instead of a remake?

Conner McCabe

Hi Ben, Jeff, Leo, and Haley! Aside from video games, do you have any other “first loves”? I recently got back into playing baseball for the first time since high school and I feel like a kid again. It made me wonder… Were you in love a particular sport? Is one of you an aspiring chef? Is Leo ready to take improv 101 at his local theater and really go for a career in performance? What are your other big loves in life? (People don’t count, not even Jeff’s child)

Jarell Pryor

Hey MinnMax! This question is about the (subjective) dry periods that come up when you're not personally looking forward to as many major game releases. When there's a drought on the horizon, do you feel like you game at the same pace as you would during like the pre-holiday season? Or do you play more slowly, and get to savor each game more while trying to make it last through a dry spell? - Jarell (pronounced JUH-RELL)

Agreeing to the Hunter's Arena: Legends terms of service and privacy policy really feels like I need a lawyer present. If you haven't seen it yet, they present you with a document to scroll through that feels like it should be printed out and hand-delivered to everyone who plays this game. It's an odd choice from the typical white text on a black background. Anyways, thoughts on the new game debuting on PS Plus?

Spencer Botine

Hello to my favorite gaming podcast! I’m 30 years old and have spent my entire career in the banking industry (BORRRRING). My current job has me managing IT Projects and I’m working on getting my Project Management Professional certification. Am I naive in trying to 180 my experience into the software/video game industry? Is it an industry tough to crack and better to start at from the bottom up? Thanks for all of the content and fun.

Hey CLC’s This past weekend I was doing some yard work. It included the typical mowing the lawn, watering the plants, trimming the hedges, etc…. While when I got to the part where I was weeding my garden, it occurred to me that pulling weeds is arguably the most underrated pleasurable feeling in the world. The satisfaction you get from pulling a weed out of the ground is like no other. When I told my fiancee she looked at me like I had three heads. Am I crazy? So my question: What are some underrated pleasurable feelings? Best, Sean M.

I know everyone talks about how good Ted Laso is on Apple +, and they’re right, but my wife and I have been watching Mythic Quest and HOLY CRAP is it good. Season 2 was just released too. Have any of the cohorts checked it out? If so, what do you think?

Sincerly, Eric

Hi super awesome people! Transformers Cybertron Trilogy is wrapping up with "Kingdom" which has the Beast Wars Era characters in it. Which is a show I have high nostalgia for. Between this and Masters of the Universe (devisive for sure, but I thought it was quality.) What is a Cartoon show you all would love to see get a proper reboot or continuation? (For me it would probably be Gargoyles) Thanks for the amazing content as always!

irrational_kind

Hello minnmaxers, what games in recent years have potential to become a new video game genre? (Or you would like to see become one.) Popularity aside what other qualities in game gives birth to new genre rather than one off great unique game.

Mason Parker

Hey Ben and the video gamers Here is a little game I like to call Best at Their Worst! It’s easy to guess which game has the highest rated game between rival franchises, but for this you have to choose which franchises WORST game has the BETTER score, according to Metacritic. Good Luck! (No mobile games or ports, DLC, or Collections) Silent hill vs resident evil Silent Hill Book of Memories (PSVITA) 58 Resident Evil Survivor (PS) 39 Forza vs Gran Turismo Forza Motorsport 5 (XOne) 79 Gran Turismo: The Real Driving Simulator (PSP) 74 Mainline Mario vs Mainline Sonic New Super Mario Bros 2 (3DS) 78 Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric (WiiU) 32 Call of Duty vs Battlefield Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified (PSVITA) 33 Battlefield Hardline (XOne) 71 GTA vs Saints Row Grand Theft Auto (GBA) 68 Saints Row 2 (PC) 72 Rock Band vs Guitar Hero Lego Rock Band (WII) 70 Guitar Hero: Van Halen (WII) 50 Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter Mortal Kombat Special Forces (PS) 28 Street Fighter EX3 (PS2) 64

What's your favorite time loop story? Mine is Outer Wilds.

Taylor Owens

Which Nintendo game has the best story?

Dan Villone

Hi Gang, If you're in a car, and someone tells you to "turn the A/C down," does that mean: 1. The car is too warm, make it colder! OR... 2. The fan is blowing hard and I'm cold. Please turn down the fan! Please note, my wife is always right about everything, and I could really use a win with this one. Thanks for all you do! Dan

Clark Hardaway

Hey CLCs, I wanted to follow up with last week's topic of not being afraid to say a game is "just bad". I was watching The Chef Show on Netflix recently and in one episode they talked about a food critique who had a policy of not writing bad reviews for restaurants that are just starting out. Even if he didn't like the food, he didn't want to hurt their chances of making it. Should we approach reviewing games by new game studios this way? Just because a studio puts out a bad game, they may learn from it and give us something amazing next time. Do we have to write a bad review? Could we just pass on it instead? Thanks for everything you guys do :)

Mark Letarte

Hello Ben and the N’s. I have a question for all of you. If you could go back in time and tell something game related to your younger self, what would it be? After some recent news, I think I’d tell my younger self to save an unopened copy of Mario 64 so I could sell it in 30 years for a million bucks.

Fatt Mish

Hello MinnMax friends! If you could have any non-human companion from a game, in real life, who or what would you choose and why? Thanks for being the best place online to talk video games! -Mars

Alex Britt

Hi Ben and friends, It's simple. What's the best game in the last 5 years? Is it also the best game in the last 10 years? You may pick up your pencils and begin. Thanks! Alex

Adam_CW

Hey Minnfolk, I need your help! I recently started dating this girl from Minnesota. I was able to talk about some cool Minnesota topics based on what I've learned from you podcast, but now I'm all out and she could leave me any minute! How do you date/impress a Minnesotan?? Thanks!

Stephen Woodson

Howdy MinnMix & welcome Haley! Simple question: how do you define a comedic bit? Please ruin all comedy and define it for us. If you Google comedy bit, the top results is a thinkpiece from 2014, we can do better than that! Never stop sniping.

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and Friends, What's your most humbling gaming experience? I remember finally beating Shao Khan in Mortal Kombat thinking I was the best on the block only to go online and get smoked in my first match.

Zane Dukes

I'm gonna come out and say it: Mass Effect 3 was amazing and the ending was even better than I remembered. After legendary editions release, how do you feel about Mass Effect and the ending?

Chuck Emmett

Hey MinnMax crew! What is (generally) the best setting for games: The past, the present, or the future?

Bob Buel

Howdy cohorts and the legendary Haley! 1st - is Haley a lawyer yet? 2nd - what is the best video game peripheral you ever owned? Its easy to knock the 3rd party MadKatz controllers of yore, but have you had one you absolutely adored? Or an accessory that you just couldn't game without? For me personally, I absolutely adored GBA's eReader attachment. The gimmick of swiping in the cards felt like something never done in gaming before and unlocking classic NES games or new levels to modern games was such a novel concept. And what's more - I honestly still dont understand how it works. Might as well be magic. But what's yours? Thanks Knuck if you buck Bob Buel

Tokyo Game Life

Minnmax, I’ve never played Final Fantasy V, but I love the other SNES Final Fantasies. I often wonder if I were to play V, would I like it as much as IV or VI, or if my love for those titles is too influenced by nostalgia. Do you ever get the feeling there’s a retro title you’ve never touched that could end up a personal favorite, or do you think nostalgia plays too much of a factor when it comes to appreciating retro games?

Leo’s Immersion

Hey MinnMaxxers! During the deepest dive on Dead Space I found I had previously purchased some gear from the DLC (or dolce, as I so doucheingly like to call it). I was speaking with one of our fine MinnMax compatreons about my struggle to decide whether or not to use the gear, and I was surprised to discover our compatreon did not know the DLC gear has tangible benefits beyond new skins! Did anyone else not know this, and do any of you struggle with the same quandary when gaming? As Shakespeare would put it, to use, or not to use, that sweet douchey dolce, is the question.

Cade Mead

I saw Haley is in tech law. What are her thoughts on governing bodies/lawmakers being decades behind when it comes to tech? Will the average person ever be protected from their data being used and sold, or similar issues? (I guess this may be a largely US issue.)

John

Hi, In the way that arguments tend to start, my wife and I got into a rather exciting debate about the impact of certain fantasy works. I thought it would be interesting to pose the question to a wider audience. Question, in the last decade which do you think has had a larger cultural impact, Lord of the Rings, or Skyrim? Thanks, Just John

Ian Switaj

Hello MinnMax crew! In preparation for Metroid Dread's release later this year I recently played through each of the 2-D Metroid games (Zero Mission, Samus Returns, Super and Fusion) for the first time ever and in chronological order. And while I'm never going to be good enough to speed run the games I had a blast playing through them all. Each of them were challenging but the one thing that led to my death more than anything else was getting used to the controls from one game to the next. I can't tell you how many times I got in a sticky situation in Samus Returns from taking damage after I jumped with the B button when I meant to shoot (which is the B button in Zero Mission). And you can't remap the controls! My question(s) for you: 1. Do you have any horror stories that you've experienced that were caused by lousy controls or difficulty getting used to a game's controls? 2. Should the ability to remap commands to whatever you button you want just be a universal standard already? P.S. The default B button in Super Metroid causes the player to Dash/Run which caused some frustrations when I played that game before I realized (and I'm embarrassed how long it took for me to learn) that you can remap the controls in Super Metroid though swapping weapons is not as fluid as in the other games.
