do you think we will EVER see a legit, nintendo published, pixel art metroid again? i want it so bad.

Shakenbake67

What’s your favorite game that no one else on the table has heard about? If you think of a game that the table has heard about you lose. My favorite game is Wrath Unleashed on the PS2 a tabletop fighting game that had a lot of good strategy but could become broken if you got real good with fighting with the “pawns”

Putting nostalgia to the side as much as possible what are the top 10 culturally important Nintendo characters in the year 2021? Have the likes of WaLuigi and Himbo icon Groose edged out Kirby and Diddy Kong for example.

Swiggity Swoo

What's a video game power-up/item that's supposed to be beneficial, but that YOU would rather not pick up? For me it's the regular grenades in Halo. Why do we need ANYTHING other than plasma grenades? I just want the plasma grenades.

Kris

Hello Minnmaxers! Hope you are all doing well! My friend and I have a bet to see who can beat the most games in a year winner gets $100. I’m at 17 he’s at 13 however I’ve been playing some older games like jak and daxter but I’ve missed out on some older Indy games or smaller games. Can you all help me out and how many games would you say average you beat a year?

RickyWinterborn

do you ever get so annoyed with marketing for something that you refuse to watch it, even when it's probably something you'd like? I've seen adds for this god forsaken Free Guy movie for so long i hate it.

Doreen Ford

A couple weeks ago I met someone and they guessed I was a gamer just by looking at me. I asked if it was this obvious and he simply said "yes". Is there a stereotypical gamer look that exists in y'all's mind?

Rich McLaughlin

How many unwrapped games are sitting in your physical backlog? What’s the oldest one?

Logan Krause

Hey MinnMaxers! I have been on depression / anxiety meds for awhile now (after my wife (Borat voice please) pointed out my tendencies) and now that I’ve been on them for awhile, I’ve noticed that I’m able to focus and play games to completion without feeling like I’m missing out on the latest and greatest or that I’ve glossed over something. I feel for the first time in awhile I can sit back and enjoy a game for what it is without FOMO. Do you guys experience what I’ll call “New Game Jitters” ? Ya Boi, Logan Krause

What does it mean for art to "say something"? Is it the same as "making a statement"? And what pieces of art specifically do this to you?

Tanner Hoisington

If you were forced to decide that from now on devs can only make linear or open world/sandbox games, which would you pick? For example this would affect whether Zelda going forward follows Breath of the Wild or Ocarina of Time as the standard for the series (Lets say that Ocarina, Shadow of the Colossus, and Uncharted 4 are roughly the cut offs for what still counts as a linear game). Choice is easy for me. Get ready for a major restructuring Ubisoft.

Tim Lorow

My earliest game memory is watching my mom play through the original Metroid on NES. She was as surprised as anyone when Samus turned out to be a lady when revealed at the end of the game.

I'm assuming you won't read this to avoid controversy but I still wanted to get it off my chest. Try to remember all the documented CIA operations while reading this: Condor, Cointelpro, Gladio, MK Ultra, etc. Far Cry 6 is most likely a CIA investment. Or maybe its a coincidence that its about overthrowing a Cuban style country and its releasing the same year as the US manufactured SOS Cuba campaign aimed to propagandize Americans into supporting a regime change war. Also, Giancarlo Esposito during summer games fest mentioned Fidel as a brutal dictator, once again a US propaganda narrative or maybe he doesn't know Cuban history. The US empire has been waging seige warfare using brutal sanctions for 60 years. But Cuba is still surviving with a world class healthcare system despite all that and even developed one of the most effective covid-19 vaccines in the world. The only reason they aren't fully vaccinated is due to the US sanctions blocking them from getting syringes. Do you guys have trouble supporting pro-imperialist narratives in video games in 2021?

chris cuevas

Hello Hanson, Janet, and Suriel. With old Video Game stuff becoming more and more expensive as collectors items I can only imagine we've all had to kick ourselves for throwing away various older systems and games. My question for you guys is what piece of your gaming history would go back in time and tell your dumb baby self to be sure to hang on to? Personally, I'd tell young me to keep all those old Pokémon carts!

Ramses Garcia

Now that movies releasing at home at same time has theaters has become such a financial disaster. What great games that you love where hurt by the terrible release strategy of the publishing company?

Shawn Mills

Who is the more iconic Metroid villain Ridley or Mother Brain? It feels like Ridley is more recognizable but I've always preferred Mother Brain. I think she has a really cool unique look and more interesting boss battles in the games. Here's hoping the last unrevealed smash fighter is Mother Brain.

Victor Pham

Are there too many indie Metroid-likes? Feels like every week a new one gets announced and the genre feels as saturated as the open world genre in the AAA space...

Greetings Double M's What is the greatest gaming related gift you have ever given someone? Did they appreciate it as much as you thought they would?

Hey gang! It’s time to play the world’s fastest rising game sensation “Ewww, Gross!” We’ve taken the top 50 highest-grossing video game franchises and adjusted them for inflation. Two franchises will be pitted against each other, you must tell us which franchise has grossed more. Hi all! Listening to last week's conversation on Seinfield, made me think about my time watching the last Season of Friends and how emotional it was. Is there a Series Finale of a show, that you all either -Remember watching Live and how much it was talked about -Stood out to you all as a big deal from when you were younger. Either Culturely or just personally. Thanks!

j0

Hey folks What is one thing you learned working for Gameinformer (or relevant job) that you take with you when you decide to start playing a new game? Thanks and merry christmas.

Styster

Do you pay attention to your playtime for games on your systems? I miss the feature on the 3DS that kept detailed records of how long you had played each game. It's a constant source of fascination for me.

Thom Blackburn

Hey minnmax folk, I've got a bone to pick with video game content creators. You're all talking about the ps5 and Xbox series x but PS5 and Xbox series x and s are soooo dead and old. ;) I want to know what the NEXT NEXT-GEN has! What are we currently missing that we could get 5 years from now? Dream big! Thom

Travis Brinkley

Hey MinnMax, Just wanted to say that I love the new charity drive! I went to college for music education so i was pleasantly surprised at the announcement. It can’t be understated how helpful these programs are.

MyNameIsDan

Ben, My partner and I have decided to begin Survivor from the very beginning. I highly doubt we will make it through every season. If you had to come up with a greatest hits list of seasons, what seasons would be on that list? Thanks, Dan

Bryce Blackmore

Hey cohorts, After listening to the better quest goal for Ben this month I have been thinking about how aware you are all of news outside of the US. Does major news outlets cover anything outside of America? I have been always really interested but had no way to find out. Living in Australia, most news outlets will cover United Kingdom and American big events and news. As a secondary question, do any of you follow the news of countries outside of your own? If so, what country and why/how?

Jordan Holmdahl

Hey all, Do you like when video games are referenced in other forms of entertainment? I've been watching The Owl House and it's abundantly clear the team working on this show is full of huge nerds. A stuffed Solid Snake doll and Cloud's Buster Sword make quick appearances in season 1, and recent episodes in season 2 have featured sight gags involving the phrase "pocket monsters," a Nintendo Switch, and a joke about the danger of minecart levels. I don't know about you folks, but I appreciate and smile at little jokey references like these.

AnAttackCorgi

Hello fellow M&M's! We're just under half a year from the start of 2022, and I'd like to revisit some of your predictions for this year of our lord 2021. What's your worst and best prediction so far?

Hunter Sax

Hello! Let's talk about Kyle behind his back! He once mentioned on a podcast that he wasn't crazy about the term Metroidvania. Claiming that it's just good game design. I think I agree! Soulslikes, Zelda likes and now Metroidvanias or Metroid likes depending on who you ask, all have incredibly similar design philosophies. We even see it in games like God of War (2018), looping world structure that utilizes progression for that goal. Has the term Metroidvania become outdated? Is it just good game design? What might be the design structure that dominates next?

tbeeks15

How’s it going cohorts?! What ideas in the gaming industry would you like to know who specifically came up with them? For example, Nintendo Directs are associated with Iwata, but I’d love to know who specifically had that idea and who initially pitched it to him and pushed hard for Nintendo to implement them into their marketing strategy. I’d also love to hear about specific game mechanics, like who had the initial thought to more heavily incorporate the gilder into Breath of the Wild. The heads of companies and game directors ultimately approve everything and may get the credit but I love hearing about the people on the teams that initially came up with those ideas originally. Ideas like this are what can propel people through a company and possibly into a public role. The ideas that the people we know in gaming had to get them to where they are now is fascinating to me and I would love to hear what you all think. Also, bad ideas that single-handedly ruined a game or marketing is also welcome Love & Respect, -Beeks

Hello fellow bounty hunters! In preparation for Metroid Dread's release later this year I recently played through each of the 2-D Metroid games (Zero Mission, Samus Returns, Super and Fusion) for the first time ever and in chronological order. And while I'm never going to be good enough to speed run the games I had a blast playing through them all. Each of them were challenging but the one thing that led to my death more than anything else was transitioning to the controls from one game to the next. I can't tell you how many times I got in a sticky situation in Samus Returns from taking damage after I jumped with the B button when I meant to shoot (which is the B button in Zero Mission). And you can't remap the controls! My question(s) for you: 1. Do you have any horror stories that you've experienced that were caused by lousy controls or difficulty getting used to a game's controls? 2. Should the ability to remap commands to whatever you button you want just be a universal standard already? See you next mission! P.S. The default B button in Super Metroid causes the player to Dash/Run which caused some frustrations when I played that game before I realized (and I'm embarrassed how long it took for me to learn) that you can remap the controls in Super Metroid though swapping weapons is not as fluid as in the other games.

PoorAndCurly

Hey gang, We've all played a metroidvania game that has added souls-like elements like high difficulty and dropping resources on death. What's a genre Mashup or feature you haven't seen in a metroidvania game that you would like to?

Ian Switaj

Hello fellow bounty hunters! Metroid: Other M was so negatively received amongst the Metroid community that some speculate the only way "we" will get a 3-D Metroid game is if it's in the style of the Prime series (i.e. first person). Would you like to see Nintendo (either directly or with a third party studio) try their hands at another third person Metroid game, perhaps like a non-rogue-like version of Returnal? If not, what would your ideal 3-D Metroid game be like? See you next mission!

Sean Mason

Hey CLCs In 2018, while in college, my senior capstone (a project all students must complete to graduate) was a paper and presentation on Final Fantasy and it’s impact on story telling in video games. Throughout the semester I spent hours replaying the games, listening to interviews with members of Square-Enix, and reading old articles. When I fished, the paper ended up being 138 pages. It is the most enjoyable thing I have ever written. So my question: what is your most enjoyable thing you have ever written? Best, Sean M.

God's Garage

Hey Minnmaxers, Apologies in advance for the long question, but I have a lot of thoughts on this topic. I’ve actually been sitting on this question for a while because I really wanted Janet to be on the panel when this was discussed, but I’m really interested to hear everyone’s opinion on the matter. I’ve been a Nintendo fan for life; my first console and game I received was a DS with Pokemon Pearl and I’ve been hooked since, owning every Nintendo console since except for the WiiU. Ocarina of TIme, Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey and Smash Ultimate are some of my favorite games of all time. That said, I can’t bring myself to be excited for Upcoming Nintendo releases anymore, and find myself becoming less and less of a Nintendo fan over time, for a few reasons. Since the launch of the Nintendo Switch, there have been several, what I would consider, “stinkers” of first party Nintendo games, just as much as there have been knockouts. Games like Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey have carried the system through the last four years, but in that time plenty of fans have been let down by games like Kirby Star Allies (73 on Metacritic), Mario Tennis Aces (75), Pokemon Lets Go (~80), Super Mario Party (76), and Yoshi’s Crafted World (79), and other remakes/ remasters such as Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (69), New Pokemon Snap (79), and The World Ends with You: Final Remix (77). All of these games, despite overall good Metacritic scores, left many fans with much to be desired and almost all did not live up to the heights of previous entries in their respective series. Weird design choices plague Super Mario Party, where there have only been four boards since launch, and side modes like the rhythm game feel like afterthoughts rather than purposeful design choices. Co-op centered games like Mario Tennis Aces are good in fundamentals, but then lack in single player content and longevity. All of these games are good, and have an audience, but fans continue to be disappointed by seemingly pointless design choices in otherwise solid titles. The online services Nintendo provides to its players are simply abysmal. For whatever reason, Nintendo has not figured out how to provide a good online experience to their players, and almost every Nintendo Switch game with online capabilities struggles to keep up when using that mode. Gamers are using their systems online more and more to play with others, but games like Smash Ultimate, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, and Super Mario Party are notorious for how difficult it is to play online and have a smooth experience. The SNES and NES libraries included in the paid online service started out strong, but now the new games coming to the SNES library for the month of August include Bombuzal, Jelly Boy, and Claymates. I mean come on. Lastly is the price point these games are coming out at. As a broke college kid, I like to game on a budget and I’m always on the lookout for good deals. Not only do Nintendo games hardly ever go on sale or drop in price, but with the lack of longevity present in some games it makes it harder and harder to decide what to spend 60$ on. Sony has really good deals on their digital store all the time, and includes really solid games with Playstation Plus every month, and Xbox of course has game pass, which leaves Nintendo with the most expensive gaming options on the market. Anyone looking to game on a budget is always looking to get the most out of games with their money, and in the last few years Nintendo has not been the place to go for that. I think the upcoming WarioWare game for switch encapsulates all of my concerns into one example. Although WarioWare games in the past have been stellar, I’m worried that the focus on co-op may detract from the overall direction of the game, leaving it with lackluster modes and still disappointing fans despite high anticipation. After launch, will the game receive regular updates with new minigames or characters to play, or will it’s lifespan die out as soon as the next big title is released and there won’t be a reason to revisit it? Because it is a co-op focused game, will the online hold up in the face of Nintendo’s terrible track record with online services? And lastly, although I am excited for WarioWare, I’m not sure I’m willing to drop 50$ on a collection of minigames, knowing that it may not see a price drop for the next five years. Cohorts, I hope you can understand my dilemma. I want to be a Nintendo fan, but sometimes it feels like Nintendo doesn’t want me to. Do any of you feel disappointed by Nintendo as of late, and find yourselves struggling to be excited for the future of Nintendo? Is Nintendo still worth the hype?

Hey guys! If Shredder caught the ninja turtles, would he actually make turtle stew?

I won a trivia question at the end of a company call, “how many days were in the Julian calendar etc etc something something” and I guessed correct. As the reward, I would choose the “intro song” to the beginning of the next company call as folks were getting on. I chose “Snake Eater” from Metal Gear Solid 3. Around 250 people on the call, and only two knew it, and I realized that I’d never felt so alone. What song would you use to figure out, through subtle, clandestine means, how many “brothers and sisters” were among you for the revolution?

Joshua Caleb

So what do you prefer? 2D Metroid or 3D Metroid? Metroidvanias are one of my favorite game genres, but I gotta admit, I'm kinda partial to the 3D Prime games. I feel like there's so few first person "adventure" games like it that have the same level of atmosphere, puzzle solving and (good) platforming. Or having I just been missing all the good "Prime-likes" as there's certainly been an absolute glut of 2D Metroidvania-likes on the indie scene

Spencer Price

Hey, Benny and the Jets! (If you could have Jeff'em sing the chorus to that song, that'd be appreciated... BENNY!... BENNY!... Benny and the Jets...) Let's talk about cloud gaming, and more specially Stadia. We all know the launch was subpar, but the tech has always worked, meaning even though some features weren't available at launch, you could still stream games on a fairly low internet connection on all your devices. Do you think cloud gaming is still the future and or has Stadia's unstuck landing pushed back that inevitability? I'm puzzled when I see people complain about storage space, downloads, cost of the next gen console, etc, but then scoff at cloud gaming and it's business model. It alleviates all of those issues and you only have to buy the games or be subscribed to Gamepass Ult. No box or controller required (if you already have any modem gamepad) Why do gamers dunk on wonderful things? Is my faith in cloud gaming misplaced? Your thoughts?

Mark Ramirez

Over the past few days I’ve binged Leo’s Roblox Outlaster streams, please we need the Minnmax Crew & community to get in on this!

Adam Hayes

I'm with Mark. I don't say much but I'm a long time listener, and we definitely need a Deepest Dive on Survivor, or an Outlaster community stream, or both.

Tokyo Game Life

Minnmax, Some games in Japan have completely different English names or translations than in the West. For example, Resident Evil is known as Biohazard in Japan. Let's see if you can guess the English titles or direct translations for Japanese games. Psycho Break -> The Evil Within Triforce of the Gods 2 -> A Link Between Worlds It's A Wonderful World -> The World Ends With You Violence Killer -> Turok 2: Seeds of Evil Mario Story -> Paper Mario (N64) Bonus movie round: Wild Speed Jet Break -> F9 (Fast and Furious 9)

Kraid Belmont

Salutations green cohorts. Can we let Suriel, or anyone else, talk about how good “The Green Knight” is? No spoiler talk, just a quick minute to appreciate this cool flick.

PhillyYeetSteak

Hey all! In movies, when a series bumps from being typically PG-13 to an R-rating, it often becomes more acceptable to be slower and more dramatic than a PG-13 movie ("Logan" and "Joker" come to mind). Why isnt this a thing in games? Is there any correlation between rating and pacing/tone in games?

irrational_kind

People often say that they would like to see AA takes on many games. If you have power to promote an indie game studio to AA level which one would it be?

It's Hugo's Nook

Hello you lovable CLCs! in honor of Marvel's What If premiering today, what is an "What if" gaming scenario you would love to play through? I personally would go for a "What If Samus Aran was raised by Ridley instead of the Chozos"

TheUnchartedWolf

Since you guys are talking about Metroid, I think it's fair to ask the ultimate question game philosphers have asked for decades, Metroid or Castlevania.

Ben

Not a question, but a response to Haley's GALOT from last week - lots of colleges will accept more freshman than they have space for with an anticipation of "melt" (students withdrawing within the first couple of weeks). They'd rather have housing overbooked for the first few weeks than have empty spaces in housing after the initial melt period. A university I used to work at would rent hotel rooms in the area for overflow students to live in for the first few weeks until the university housing office decided that the initial melt period had calmed down.

Brian Paradis

I have been playing through Skyward Sword HD over the last couple of weeks and I have a question. When you are at low health in a Zelda game, what is your greatest concern: running out of hearts and dying or getting that awful alarm sound to stop? Also, is there any other game that you are aware of that makes being at low health as annoying as the Zelda series?

Dan Villone

Hi Gang, I submitted a question last week about what it means when someone asks to "turn the A/C down" in a car. Everyone agreed with my perspective, so I guess that means I was right and my wife was wrong. Turns out, I was WRONG to play back the podcast to my wife, all the while saying "See? See? I was RIGHT!!" So as I write this message from my new bedroom, also known as the living room couch, I was wondering: what is the nicest way to say "I told you so?" Thanks, Dan
