What makes a game a 'cult classic'? Can a game sell well, but still be one? Does it have to be critically acclaimed at the time? Lastly, what's the quintessential cult classic video game in your mind? What's your favorite?

Crayter

Hey Cohorts, Wondering what characters you think were either killed off or otherwise removed from the story of a game too soon. I'm thinking Pipo from Overblood is a strong contender.

Keaton

Hello there, What piece of media have you started because it had an element of another thing you liked and you ended up liking the new piece better? For example, I really liked the combat of the Batman Arkham games but in some ways, I like the combat of the Shadow of Mordor games better. Another example is how Thief inspired Dishonored but I like Dishonored better. Really interested to see what you all think!

Chris H

Hey Cohorts - Has a game ever served as an introduction to you for a larger non-gaming fandom? For example, I was never a Beatles fan growing up but picked up The Beatles Rock Band used on a whim. Almost 10 years later I am a verified Beatlemaniac (currently reading a 900 page book on them!) What non-gaming interest has been piqued through games?

Infinite

Co-Howdy Cohorts! If you were given the ability to design a controller for a major console, what would you do to make it unique? Numbers or symbols instead of letters and shapes? Different colors? Wildly interesting ergonomic designs?! I wanna know!

KingCaitSith

Hello MinnMax crew hope this question finds you all well… but enough with the silly pleasantries! We’re all here with one thing on our mind, FOOD. In the spirit of the earlier Pokémon discussion, we will be playing “Pokéberry or Human-berry”! (I tried for far too long to come up with a pun I’m sorry y’all I’m a failure) Which of these berries are from the Pokémon world, or from our lame non-Pokémon world??? The person with the most points is the lord of all berries in the multiverse! -Name the berry from Pokémon- 1. Sitrus Berry (P) or Gooseberry (H) 2. Choke Berry (H) or Mago Berry (P) 3. Lingon Berry (H) or Aguav Berry (P) 4. Black Currants (H) or Bluk Berry (P) 5. Maranga Berry (P) or Elder Berry (H)

Hey there Minn-esot-ians Max-imus-ians. As someone who's been affected by motion sickness for a while now, it's refreshing to hear Ben talk about his experiences every now and then. What's the best way you've learned to cope with it? Dramamine works, but makes me drowsy. And what games seems to get you the most? For me, some examples include the Titanfall series, newer Resident Evil games, id games, and poorer quality VR titles.

Adam

Hey Ben and crew, not a question, but I just wanted to back you up Ben and let you know that you're 100% in the right about not wanting subtitles or captions on while you watch things. Don't let them gaslight you into thinking you're the crazy one!

Charlie Hunter

Hello there, cohorts! I was recently playing Marvel's Avengers with my 6 year old son, and he accidently purchased $50 worth of premium currency. I quickly changed my purchase settings on my PS5, and contacted Sony for a refund. Luckily, they gave me the refund! However, the currency my son purchased never went away. I don't feel right spending it, but I don't like having to try to keep track of how much is actually mine. What would you guys do? Do you have any memorable stories of getting away with a freebie you knew you shouldn't have?

Interrotta

Hello Minnmax! Everything going on with Abandoned regarding its marketing, the teaser they put on Twitter being the same in the app, the constant trailer delays, etc, as well as hearing that they have also hyped up other games only for them to not come out, has me wondering when does Sony get involved and come out and say something about this game?

Tactical Dreamer

Hello Ben and Company Do y'all prefer a game to prioritize replayability or letting the player see/do/get everything in a single playthrough?

Sean Mason

Hey CLC's, Last Friday, a new couple moved into the house next door to me. After a few days, I decided to go over and introduce myself, and to my surprise, what did I see when they invited me into their home…….? An entire mantle decked out in various Halo items. Their “shrine” as they called it had every collector's edition, various Halo action figures, posters, signs, ETC. It was truly a sight to dazzle at. So my question: What is on your video game mantle/shrine? If you don't have one, what would you put on it? Best, Sean M.

Hey, Ben and gang! Game Informer Winter 2018 intern Robbie Key here! I'm extremely blessed and got engaged last week! My now-fiancé and I have been building a house, which will include my very own game room and is the part of our home I admittedly am the most excited about! In your current gaming setups, rooms, etc., what are some things you each love about your respective spaces? What are some things you wish you would have added at first, or could take out now because it ended up not working well? What would your ultimate fantasy game room look like if you had an unlimited budget? Thanks for keeping entertained and informed week after week!

I got beef with Jeffem's answer to my cloud gaming question last week. I have a good connection at home, but often times I'll play Stadia on my crappy 4G connection with no latency issues. I played Cyberpunk one day while I was waiting to get my car repaired for 2 hours on mobile data. It was magical. I have a hard time believing that cloud gaming doesn't work for people when I've experienced it at some of the lower conditions and it still works acceptably fine. Maybe it's your distance from the nearest data center or maybe some people's level of what's acceptable is different than mine, but when I hear people talk about cloud gaming in games media and disregard it as a viable alternative because "it just doesn't work" makes me think they haven't really tried it. Nothing but love for y'all and JeffM. Here's hoping Minnesota gets better internet soon. 🤞

Playing Back 4 Blood, with my best pals of 14 years now, helped me to realize that I don’t like them, and that they are not my friends. Have cooperative games also helped you to see the light, strained your relationships, and proven that you can’t really trust your friends, and that as soon as you are downed and need the revive, they will leave you behind at the bridge? I should play Back 4 Blood with my wife…

Game Time! I like to play this with friends and it always spawns fun debates. The game is: Overrated, Underrated, Favorite, Least Favorite . We’ve done things like fruit, holidays, appetizers, etc. But for you all, let’s hear your: Overrated, Underrated, Favorite, Least Favorite Video Game Series.

Hey Ben and the Minnisters, Apologies on the forthcoming diatribe, but wanted to weigh in on the Great Caption Debate in defense of Ben and fellow no-captioners. I can appreciate the practical reasons for using captions--and certainly in situations where the ability to watch something may otherwise be hindered--but in general, captions degrade the overall experience by robbing the performers and the director of the presentation of the narrative; I doubt most movies or TV shows are made with the intention that the viewer will be looking towards the bottom quarter of the screen for much of the time. It's like reading a script of the movie during the movie. Even if a quick reader can internalize the What of the dialogue before focusing attention to the actors providing the How, this bifurcation of the two seems at odds with the intention of the creators' vision for viewing experience. There is a syncing issue of sorts; for a split second the dialogue is without context while we wait for the actors to help provide it--similar to the experience of watching something where the sound is not quite in time with the visuals, which is jarring enough. But for the human brain a split second can be an eternity. In that span we can have expectations for how a line ought to be delivered and be disappointed that it was delivered differently, we can make an assumption about who said what and be jolted to discover it was a different character, we can have the gravity of a major beat of a scene or a punchline of a joke be spoiled by knowing it's coming in the near future, etc. All of which contributes to the deterioration of suspension of disbelief and immersion. I also think it fundamentally shifts the emphasis towards the What, i.e. What is being said? What is happening? What happens next? which has the effect of de-emphasizing the How. I can appreciate that for a room of former and current writers and editors, there may be a premium on the written word. However, this essentially casts the actors as a perfunctory or also-ran component in the attention of the viewer, at best, or as merely puppets to deliver lines at worst. Cynically, I think the emphasis on the What, taken to the extreme by folks who watch at >1x speed with captions ON, underlines a prominence in viewing habits leaning towards Content Consumption™, the min/maxing (if you will) of the viewing of art so as to burn through a checklist or grant one the ability to say “I saw that” (which I admit, I find distasteful), but also contrary to the spirit of the work that the creators likely had in mind. P.S. I have seen a few examples of captions that felt more dynamic—words appearing near the character that said them while appearing on screen in a similar cadence to the performance—and I think they are great start in exploring how captions can more thoughtfully and better integrated to preserve (I will still need convincing to believe they can ENHANCE) the overall viewing experience.

What's your most favourite expletive that is family friendly. e.g. Oh gosh darn it

When I was just a little boy, I read about the Playstation Link Cable, which allowed you to connect two Playstation's together. It was so you could play multiplayer on two separate TVs instead of split screen, but I thought it would let you COMBINE GAMES if you put different games in each Playstation. So at school the next day I raised my hand and proudly told the teacher that if my mum bought me this device I could play as Spiderman in Spyro. Immediately my friend Georgio told me that if I tried that, it would explode. When you were a kid, what did you get wrong about games and/or the world?

Mitch

Hello Ben and Crew, I have been an avid gamer almost my entire life, but whenever I’m meeting someone new and have to talk about myself and what my hobbies are - whether it was at school, at work or on a date - I almost always default to talking about things I would consider more mainstream like biking or watching sports, and almost never bring up gaming. Have you ever had this type of hesitancy talking about your gaming passions?

Thom Blackburn

What mythologies would you like to see explored in games? Greek and Norse are pretty played out at this point. Thanks, Thom

Forrest With Two Rs

Hey all - Bomb Rush Cyberfunk has me thinking, what's in a name? What's the last game you remember wanting to play solely because of a cool name? What's the best game with the worst name you can think of?

Kyle Silva

What’s up Pickleheads? According to the Summer Games Fest website, the festival is officially over. And while the website is rather proud to show all the showcases and events run by others, I can’t help but feel like Summer Games Fest was mostly piggybacking off of the announcements of publishers who didn’t have Summer Games Fest directly in mind, with the grand exception of Elden Ring. Is it fair to say that E3 beat Summer Games Fest as the brand for big announcements this year? Where do you think your hype would be at if we do get a Summer Games Fest 2022?

Hey gang! I once made a belt out of watches. It was a real waist of time. What’s everyone's favorite dad joke?

Brandon Lovesee

Greetings Cohorts!, Have you ever walked out of an interview or studio visit about a big upcoming game and said "This game isn't going to be very good"? What was that like and how were you able to still do the story? Also, what about a time when you said "This game is going to be amazing"?

Knobby Buckles (Dave)

In the spirit of solving marital debates from a few episodes back, I have one for you: when you're filing paperwork in a file cabinet, does the new stuff go in front so the most recent stuff is in top when you pull it out and open the folder, or do you put it in the back so when you open it, it reads chronologically? Also, does anyone else still have a filing cabinet, or am I a geriatric?

The other cohorts have been turned into Barbie Dolls! You choose their doll name and which 3 accessories come with them in the box.

Hey there Ben et Co. What are some games that you know are fantastic and want to play desperately, but you just do not have the skill set required to play them. I've been trying for a week now to get through Hollow Knight, but I just don't think my platforming abilities are up to snuff to make any real progress.

Eric Hunt

Hi cohorts! Can you come up with lyrics to the MinnMax show theme song? Let’s hear those beautiful voices and improv skills!

Jordan Shaffer

Hello! I recently watched a new Swedish Netflix show called young royals, and even though it’s only 6 episodes, I think it is already one of my favorite shows of all time. Has there ever been a show you loved that never got a second season? Freaks and geeks definitely comes to mind…are there others?

Justin

Hey Ben and Cohorts, I was visiting my folks this past weekend and we got on the topic of playing our NES when I was a toddler. That leads me to my question. What is your very earliest “gaming” memory you have? For some reason I remember playing Super Mario Bros. as a kid with my mom and she had gotten to World 3 (the one that has a black sky). Anyway, I have no idea why I remember it, but that’s the earliest gaming memory I can recall. I was probably 3 or so? What about you guys?

Which current or former employee would you most want to interview from the following companies, and why: Nintendo, Square Enix, Ubisoft, Activision Blizzard.

The Sideline Crowd

Greeting Ben and Crew! I've been playing Bloodborne with the intention to actually get through it, so I am using a walkthrough to make my journey more enjoyable and bearable. I also typically use one with most survival horror games because I'm a big wuss with the scares and I also don't want to unintentionally hinder myself during the game so I can enjoy it fully. People may scoff at the idea of using a walkthrough, but I have never felt that I've being deprived of the experience other gamers have had with games like RE7 or Bloodborne. What are your stances on using guides and walkthroughs? And what type of games do you usually use them for?

Ari

With the upcoming Psychonauts 2 releasing around the corner, I would like to ask what other video game characters' minds would you like to dive into and explore. Don’t forget in true Tim Schafer fashion once inside we discover their internal struggles, moral dilemmas or mental blocks. For example: Mario’s dilemma could be how he depends too much on the use of power ups when he is on his adventures to save Princess Peach. All the best - Ari

Hi MinnMax 😃 As the Back 4 Blood beta comes to an end, I’m reminded we have a wave of new PvE multiplayer games on the way: Gotham Knights, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Overwatch 2, Redfall, (possibly more I can't remember?) What are some of your favorite PvE multiplayer experiences? Recently I’ve loved the Ghost of Tsushima PvE multiplayer!!

BlakJak

Imagine a world where Activision Blizzard is no longer allowed to exist and each if its game franchises will be donated to the studio deemed most worthy by the Minnmax Cohorts. Which games do you give to what studios?? (i.e. Starcraft is given to DICE to make an fps with 100 v 100 maps)

Order in the courtroom! You are asked to replace the Ace Attorney characters with one real life court case. Which do you choose and why?

Any memorable 'launch day' experiences, whether with a game, system, movie, book, or otherwise? For example, I was able to get a launch day Dreamcast (9/9/99) as an eleven year old with money earned mowing lawns and cleaning bathrooms around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford any games...or an extra controller. I had two friends over for launch day, we passed around my only controller, and played the packed in demo disc for hours. Single player Power Stone, Controller only House of the Dead 2, and fishing controller-less Sega Bass Fishing. Maybe not the optimal experience. Yet, I wouldn't trade that experience for the world.

JeffM made a comment during the Metroid discussion about how he remembered Metroid feeling more mature than other Nintendo games he knew at the time. I was very young, 3-4 I think, when my older brother got an NES as a gift one year. My brother is 8 years older than I am, so the variety of games was pretty large. I was allowed to play any game we had, but I distinctly remember avoiding some because they felt like the "big kid games" to me. The difficulty of the game was never the issue. I played Zelda and Metal Gear, though I am sure quite poorly considering my age at the time. What caused me to feel this way about any given game could vary. Metroid actually scared me. The music on the title screen was terrifying enough to make me rapidly leave the room. I remember thinking it reminded me of the Holloween piano theme. Final Fantasy looked fun with the characters, but was too difficult for my young mind. What I found interesting was I did not remember feeling this way about any games in my life until JeffM's comment. When everyone was growing up, can anyone remember feeling this way about older family members' games?

Hey minners and maxers, Let's dive deeper into the misinterpretation of last week's question about power-ups, the one where Hanson claimed that Mario is in complete control of his fireballs even though that plumber can't even start running without blasting away. What would be the best and worst Super Mario power-ups to have in real life?

Fred Dinovo

Question for Suriel, what's going on with fight sticks on the PS5? Explain in detail this will be 8% of your grade Thanks!

Hey MinnMax, I couldn't help but notice that no one jumped on the Halo Infinite Beta. Was there a reason you all chose not to cover that more thoroughly? Seems like reactions to that would have done well via the YouTube and such. How do you all feel about covering the bigger games / gaming news in general? Do you mostly just go on what the core group is interested in as opposed to what a larger audience might be interested in hearing? Cheers

Sincerly, Eric

If you could throw a Pokeball at anything in real life to catch it. What would you catch?

Hello Sarah! If you were to pick my question for Question of the Week, would you like to have this [INSERT NAME OF THIS WEEK'S PRIZE HERE] from our good friends at iam8bit? [PAUSE TO HEAR SARAH'S RESPONSE] Now that Ben has indulged my sense of meta humor and -- I'm sure -- is having none of that, hello MinnMaxxers! With the waning days of summer almost upon us we are nearing the annual drop of games for the holiday season and as I get older I realize that I don't have nearly enough time to balance newer releases and going back to old classics that I missed. And I'm sure you all have to make tough choices as to when to stop playing a game and thus never finish them. A lot of games offer an easy mode for people who may only be interested in a games narrative (ex. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles) and would certainly help gamers finish games quicker. My question(s) for you, for games that you know you like but may or may not have time to play through completion, would you rather play them on an easier difficult setting to get to the end or stick to your preferred difficulty and not finish the game at all? How would you go about making such a decision?

Eric Reitz

Hey MinnMax crew! If you had the chance, no cost involved, technology is even better than where we are today for sake of comfort, what would you rather do? Go to space? Or to the bottom of the deepest ocean?

CANT BLINK

Hey MinnMaxers! We all saw Leo wreck house against Hanson et al last week in Splitgate. Sarah, as a headshot maniac, what are some tips you can give us to help our FPS game? Hanson needs some STAT! Are there settings you adjust, equipment you think gives you an edge, or is it just the point-click interface we need to perfect? Thanks!

Hey Maxy Mans (and womans) Name your all star pokemon team. Thanks

How’s it going cohorts?! What ideas in the gaming industry would you like to know who specifically came up with them? For example, Nintendo Directs are associated with Iwata, but I’d love to know who specifically had that idea and who initially pitched it to him and pushed hard for Nintendo to implement them into their marketing strategy. I’d also love to hear about specific game mechanics, like who had the initial thought to more heavily incorporate the gilder into Breath of the Wild. The heads of companies and game directors ultimately approve everything and may get the credit but I love hearing about the people on the teams that initially came up with those ideas originally. Love & Respect, -Beeks
