Tim Sweeney in a Washington post article mentioned how the internet will turn into the metaverse. He wants to break IOS, Android and all wall gardens to give creators the tools cough* (and take a cut of all revenue without paying creators). Epic wants to be the platform of the metaverse. Anyway are you ready to live in ready player one? On good or bad things do you see a metaverse future bring?

Ramses Garcia

Smash bros and Fortnite have been amazing cross company events. The new spider man might be an amazing Sony and marvel event. Is their a dream cross over you can think about?

wittynicknamehere .

It's probably horrifying to think how close this suddenly is, but I must ask: do you have any plans starting to coalesce for Extra Life this year?

Tactical Dreamer

There was a debate making the rounds recently that I'd like to get y'alls take on. Can a game that brings nothing new to the game space still be a GOTY contender?

Grizzled Gaming

Hey, gang! Ben, tell JeffM Grizzled Gaming says "hello". He'll know what it means. I’ve recently started reading more, so I was hoping y’all could give me a few good book recommendations. It doesn’t matter the genre, I’ll read anything as long as it’s interesting. Thanks!

Brian Paradis

With Far Cry 6 coming out, I wanted to know if there any franchises that you will always play even though the games are consistently only OK. For me, I feel that way about both Far Cry and Borderlands.

Justin Hughes

Hey cohorts. If you were in a situation where you HAD to beat someone at something or you would die, what would you choose? It could be literally anything but it has to be something that 2 people could compete at and something that you are certain you would beat them at.

Jake Z

As a follow up to my question last week, what games are a masterpiece in terms of their story and their gameplay? Are there any?

Stephen Woodson

Welcome (officially) Sarah! Simple question, which is better: A good parry or a good dodge roll?

Jeorin

Howdy MinnMax crew! How do you all feel about the games as a service model? I think it's probably good for consumers who pick one game and play it obsessively, but probably doesn't represent the wider market of gamers, who are always seeking the next new experience. Is the games as a service model bad, good, or just another benign thing that we tolerate?

Empiric Unicorn

Hey CLCs! What game world/level do you think would smell the best and which video game character would you be curious to take a good whiff of?

Interrotta

Hello Ben and the Cohorts. I feel like every licensed game released for kids now are just in it to make a quick buck. While growing up, there were certainly licensed games like that, but I also have fond memories of playing good licensed games like Aladdin, The Lion King (albeit I never got far in that one), and the Mickey Mouse platforming games on Super Nintendo, to name a few. My kids like Paw Patrol, and my oldest wants one of the games after loving Ratchet and Clank, but just looking up a video to see what the gameplay is like for the new game based on the movie, it looks repetitive, short, and ultimately something I don’t wanna buy because it looks so cheaply designed. My question is, will there ever be a developer that can combine licensed kids games with good game design?

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and Friennds, What was your biggest gaming oversight? For instance I just learned final fantasy is an anthology series. I'd always avoided it thinking I had to play 13 games just to enjoy an MMO.

IanTClark

Confession time. For the last 2 weeks I’ve been playing Deathloop early in the mornings instead of walking my dogs…In my defense, it has been raining a lot and we do have a big yard that they can run around in. I’m just really pushing to finish this game before Metroid Dread comes out. What are some of the things you’ve neglected to get in extra gaming?

Doreen Ford

Happy Sora is in smash week everybody! What is the game announcement that has gotten you the most excited specifically ones you never thought would happen? Sora being in smash made me basically laugh cry from excitement and disbelief.

YARF

What do y’all do to get into that festive/Fall/Halloween spirit in October? Equal parts silly, spooky, and nostalgic. Do you have a game, movie, food, activity, beverage, or ambiance? Recently, I have my fire place going, with all the Fall decorations out, while playing “Night in the Woods” during that Halloween section, or just watching old Halloween Disney stuff with the family. Just 11/10

Bryce Blackmore

Negative feedback is always difficult to stomach and will often mentally outweigh all the positive feedback you get. How have you changed the way you engage with negative feedback over time. Have you managed to find a strategy or technique which has allowed you to either ignore it and/or take on feedback to address the feedback being given. Related question, how do you know what is feedback you should change and what are things that need to be ignored?

Justin

Hey MinnMaxxers...once and for all please settle this contentious question. Candy Corn, yay or nay?

Mark Ramirez

Hey MinnMax, first off so excited for Sarah to be a cohort! Before the announcement I was really hoping she could be included in the GOTY talks, so dream come true! My real question, can Grant, star of Hitman 3, be considered for character of the year?

Christien

Hey MinnMax Nation, What would you think a Super Smash Bros. would look like if it was all movie stars? I imagine instead of game series it would be production/publishers. Time Warner’s line up, Lions Gate line up, Netflix line up(?)…… Who would you main and what would their down smash be?

Kyle Silva

Happy Spooktober Ghoulhorts! 2021 has been a good year for me to beat a few “white whale” games on my backlog. I’ve beaten a good amount of games that I’ve been considering of playing for a long while, or started, but never completed. It feels good to tie the loose ends of my library and reminiscing a bit. What game has the longest time gap between you first time playing to your first time beating it? Mine is Mario Pinball Land for the GBA, which was a 16 year gap altogether.

Shawn Mills

What's the scariest thing you've ever seen?

Joe Dean

Hello MinnMax While watching the announcement trailer for Sora in Smash Bros, and losing my mind, I was somewhat surprised to feel my eyes tearing up. I love Kingdom Hearts, it's my favorite game of all time, but fully recognize its absurdity. With the sheer surprise and joy at what I thought was impossible happening, and the beautiful orchestral version of Simple and Clean my emotions were too strong. Has an advertisement/announcement ever done this to you? And what musical tracks from video games, or otherwise, always hits you hard? Thanks, Joe Dean

Tanner Hoisington

Resubmitting because I think I missed the cut off last week ------ With the announcement of the next Kirby game being a 3D platformer, existing rumors of a Donkey Kong 3D platformer, and recent releases like Kena, Ratchet, It Takes Two, and Psychonauts, do you think it's possible that we are seeing a gradual shift back to 3D platformers? Would that be something you'd want? I think a lot of people in their mid twenties like me have more nostalgia for them than 2D platformers/Metroidvanias

Eric Reitz

Hey MinnMax Crew! Over the past year and a half or so of this pandemic, I found myself drawn back into a hobby I thought I would never return to, Lego! The combination of nostalgia and just something simple like building an NES out of Lego's has captured my attention like I had when I was a kid. I recognize now how calming and stress-reducing simply following Lego instructions is that I don't think my child self quite noticed. What's a hobby that you once had a long time ago, but picked back up later in life that you have a new appreciation for? P.S. Just starting building the Super Mario 64 set, and going back to the old Deepest Dive episode is the perfect pairing! Happy Gaming! Eric Reitz

Erin T.

Hey Cohorts! Including redownloads, and across multiple phones – what’s the one game you’ve had on your phones the longest? This might not necessarily be the game you’ve played the most, just the one you’ve had on your phone(s) forever. (This could also be amended to include consoles/PC!)

Seangocongo

Hey Minnmax! I recently finished playing Tales of Arise and I really enjoyed my experience. However, after looking into my statistics for the game I was baffled. I spent 15 hours of game time in combat and about 65 hours outside of it (It only took this long to finish because I wanted the platinum). Combat is my favorite part of Tales games, and I make an effort to fight every enemy in an area before moving on. I concluded that the majority of my time outside of battle was spent watching story sequences. I enjoy a good story now and then, but it’s always on the bottom of reasons why I choose to play any game. That being said, my question is this: Do you think modern games have too much story? I don’t want to take away from fans who come to games mainly for story, but do any of you feel like the ratio of showing to telling is getting a little skewed? Love you guys, Welcome Sarah! P.S. Bring Back Cat Daddy!

Mason Cowell

Hello Minnmax peeps! What score do you think the non-gaming public would give to these 10 games that got 10 out of 10s from gameinformer? Non-gaming public being people who are wholly unfamiliar with playing or watching video games. Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 Breath of the Wild Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal Resident Evil 4 Bioshock Uncharted 2 Starcraft 2 Metal Gear Solid 2 Mass Effect 3 Red Dead Redemption 2

Bob Buel

Howdy to Poggers...and I guess the other cohorts too. It's time to play America's fastest growing quiz show sensation - Columbo episode or L.A. Noire Case! In each of the matchups below, one will be an episode of the classic Peter Falk detective show 'Columbo' and the other will be a case title from the Rockstar videogame 'L.A. Noire.' Its up to you to sniff out which is which. (For Hanson: the Columbo episodes have a ** after them) A Stitch in Crime** -or- Buyer Beware An Exercise in Fatality** -or- The Red Lipstick Murders A Marriage Made in Heaven -or- Lovely but Lethal** A Deadly State of Mind** -or- Armed & Dangerous The White Shoe Slaying -or- Dead Weight** A Polite Invitation -or- Double Exposure**

What's the most mundane thing to ever scare you? One time I was parked next to a huge trailer with a landscape image printed on the side of it. That vehicle started moving right as I parked and it gave me the illusion that my car was driving itself!

Brad Grenz

Hello MinnMaximals, Maybe it's just me, but it's been feeling like John Drake moving over to Disney has quietly been one of the biggest things to happen in the industry in the last decade. Firaxis working on Marvel, Machine Games working on Indy, an open world Star Wars game from Massive, Sony building on Spider-Man with Wolverine and now a KOTOR remake, and finally getting Sora in Smash; it feels like the impact Disney licensing has been happening on the AAA space can't be ignored. Is Drake not getting enough recognition for the magnitude of these moves?

Dan

JeffM! Top 3 favorite board games! GO! Hanson! You too! Janet and Sarah, you joined MinnMax post-COVID and after the tabletop streams, so we need to know: are you into board gaming? If so, what are some of your favorites? Really enjoy the content; thank you and keep it up!

Chandler

hello mixmann. If video games stopped being released there's probably enough out there to play for the rest of your lives. If they did stop releasing right now, do you think you'd lose interest in gaming eventually? I feel like I would, but I feel bad about it. There's hobbies like biking or knitting or whatever that don't have exciting new developments ever and people still do those things. Why do I need new games when there's already so many out there? Also Ben, this isn't part of the question, but I put off watching knives out for years until recently. I kept telling myself I would watching it from the middle like you suggested, but in the end my friends invited me to watch it with them and we watched it the normal way. I put it off for so long because I told myself I'd eventually watch it your weird way and after watching it normally, I have no idea what starting it from middle would have added. I think a crucial part of your experience was that you didn't know you were in the middle. Either way I feel like I've let you down. Please forgive me

Ian Switaj

Hello MinnMaxxers! Despite being a huge fan of the series there's no way I can deny that the Kingdom Hearts franchise has a rather, dare I say, infamous reputation that precedes it that can turn people off from it and fill them with dread. Case in point, Ben during the FF7:Remake Deepest Dive describing his worse nightmare of Sephiroth revealing himself to be Mickey Mouse because of people making comments along the lines of, "Just you wait for the Kingdom Hearts." My question for the crew: What game(s) (good or otherwise) have you had hesitation in playing because of a reputation that the game or the series that it's a part of has (ex. the epilogue is too long; the story's convoluted and makes no sense; etc.)? P.S. Hey Hanson, one of the panelists that you got for the Metroid Dread Deepest Dive -- the best, most thorough discussion about Metroid Dread on the internet -- wouldn't by any chance happen to be Andy McNamara, would it? P.P.S. Just saw your MD:DD promotion video and I see that's not the case. Never mind.

Jonathan Dinh

Hello MinnMax First, congrats to Sarah for becoming a full-time cohort! We often talk about games being underrated or having a second coming years after release, such as Wind Waker. I often think of the reverse, where a game was a critical and commercial success but then the rose-tinted glasses come off and opinions start to change. An example for myself is Bioshock Infinite, I loved the game when it first came out and played it multiple times in succession but looking back now it had some glaring flaws. What's a game you/the public enjoyed immensely but later is remembered less fondly?

Troy Ellison

Hello Gamers! What would you consider to be your "gateway game"? What I mean is the game that, while it might not have been your first or favorite, it was a pivotal game that may have lead you to your favorite game/genre or drastically shaped your personal taste. The reveal of Sora for smash today had me reminiscing on my introduction to Kingdom Hearts, which I consider to be mine. It definitely shaped my tastes to RPGs and will always hold a special place in my heart

Solo

What is the last game you finished that is older than 5 years? If you played it on current-gen (PS5), it doesn't count. It's got to be on a previous console. For me, it was Super Mario Galaxy 2. Bye.

Morne

Hello Big Minn and the Maximum Crew After recently adoring the game Sable, I was wondering why there weren't more games with no combat of any kind. It got me considering that combat might be a crutch that many developers utilise as it is the easiest way to create engaging gameplay. Do you feel like combat is overused in modern video games and do you think it's possible to see a new wave of non-combat games?

Jason Wojnar

Hi People, This one is for Sarah. Can you tell us what it was like studying abroad and learning a language in your adulthood (assuming you didn't already know Japanese and that you learned it there). I study abroad in Kyiv, Ukraine and started learning Ukrainian when I was 23 years old. To me, there is no better sense of accomplishment than when a language that previously sounded incomprehensible is now perfectly clear. Jason Wojnar (Voynar)

Hope everyone at MinnMax is well. I have recently been playing the 3ds again. And couldn't help but notice all the unique Nintendo games made just for it, many of which people have forgotten about. So here's my game for the podcast to play, let's call it. Do You Remember? Where the other members will buzz in if they remember a game when Ben list it. And then the person will try to describe it briefly. for Ben here is the list of games. Steel Divers, Sushi Strikers, Ever Oasis, Codename S.T.E.A.M., Hey Pikmin, Chibi Robo Zip Lash, Puzzle & Dragons + Super Mario Bros.

Hey CLCs, Another week down at my infamous (or famous) school. Up until today, it was a pretty normal week, teaching new poems, grammar practice, ETC……. But, during the final period of the day our principal came over the loud speaker and asked all the staff to check our emails. At first, I figured it was for a last minute faculty meeting, but what I saw was totally unexpected. He was requesting all the names of the students who we let use the bathroom during 4th period. Attached was a picture of one of the bathrooms completely vandalized and destroyed. The soap dispenser was torn off the wall, sinks cracked, toilet seats taken off the toilet, and various inappropriate drawings on the walls. Apparently this a new TikTok trend for middle and high school students. All of my students already knew about what had happened, and they are now referring to it as “the incident”. So my question: what was “the incident” at your high school/middle school that you will never forget? Best, Sean M.

Hello CLCs and Ben. As gaming journalists, you guys get to play a lot of games. I’m sure there’s also pressure that you HAVE to play at least a portion of a lot of games just to be able to stay part of the conversation. My question is, what percentage of games you’ve played in the last year have you actually rolled credits on? Is it most of them, or do you usually dabble in a lot of games? For games you don’t have time to finish, do you ever go read a plot summary just so you know what happened? Thanks and love the show.

Tanner Methven

Hey Minnmax Crew, While I and many others are celebrating Sora’s debut in Smash Bros, the Kingdom Hearts games are often mocked for their convoluted story. With that in mind, how about a game of Real or Fake: Kingdom Hearts Plot Points. I’ll describe a story event and you guess if it’s real or not. Full spoilers for all games. Thanks guys, Tanner Methven (Ben you’ve pronounced it “Met-Vin” but the first part is pronounced “Meth” like methamphetamine) -In the first game, it’s implied Sora has parents or some sort of caretaker who we never see. In Kingdom Hearts Recoded, it’s revealed that Sora’s caretaker was the First Key, an immortal keyblade master and the first person to open the door to Kingdom Hearts. His intention was to keep Sora away from the whole keyblade conflict, but he failed. (Fake) -After escaping from the Tron world and reuniting with Yuffie and Aerith, Sora discovers that Tron can be tickled by typing on the real world keyboard. After Sora tickles him for a bit, Tron restores the memories of all the Final Fantasy characters. (Real) -Vanitas takes his helmet off to reveal he looks like an evil version of Sora. He then says this is due to Sora succumbing to Darkness in the upcoming second keyblade war, the essence of which has pierced the boundaries of time. (Fake, though Vanitas does look like evil Sora) -While exploring the Lilo & Stitch world, the film’s antagonist cloned Donald Duck and had him infiltrate the main trio. After being defeated, he simply vanished because he had no real soul to create a heartless or Nobody. (Fake) -The villainous Organization 13 gets it’s name from its 13 members. However, there was originally a 14th member, actually an artificial life form, who sacrifices themself to help Sora regain his memories, though this wiped all memory of the 14th member from existence. (Real) -When someone joins organization 13, the letters in their name are scrambled with an X added in to form a new name, with the X allowing series antagonist Xehanort to seemingly gain some sort of power over them. This is revealed to be why he is able to track Sora: Sora’s shirt has a giant X on it. (Real)

I have a seemingly simple question for you this week: MinnMax's mantra is "Games, friends, and getting better." What does the "games" and "friends" part mean to you? Is this playing Mario Party with my best friend from high school? Could playing a board game with a recent acquaintance count? What about playing dice in an alley with a stranger who could potentially become a friend? Thoughts?

AnAttackCorgi

Im not sure if anyone noticed, but all of Facebook was down yesterday. A lot of people, including myself, kinda hoped it stayed down. If you could choose a social media service, or online games service, to go down forever, which one would it be and why? Cheers, AnAttackCorgi Fun side note, Facebook lost around $2,670 per second the service was out of commish, which comes out to $58million over the 6 hours if my math is right. Even more mind boggling? That’s only 0.05% of The Zuck’s $122.7 billion net worth.

PoorAndCurly

Hey Minnmax, It seems like all my favorite video game podcasts and journalists are linked in someway or another. Now with the announcement of Trivia Tower All Stars seemingly adding to this belief, how small would you say the games media world is, and how connected is it all?

OozingNeon

Just watched the Nickelodeon All-Stars New Show + episode on YouTube, and Sarah was saying that she wished that Invader Zim would come back. Did you guys know there was an Invader Zim movie (Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus) that came out on Netflix in 2019? As a lifelong Invader Zim fan myself, it RULES.

Daisy

Hey MinnMax Crew, What are video game features you really want, but know you're either in the minority or your reasoning isn't talked about much? For me, I want more cross play because I want to play more games with my husband. We're obviously in the same household and not about to get two Playstations or two gaming PCs. My husband isn't the biggest gamer but after playing It Takes Two and A Way Out earlier this year, we want to play more campaign-driven games together but those type of games often only have online multiplayer BUT don't support cross play. Looking at you Far Cry 6… Another one is cloud gaming support on desktop. A lot of people say cloud gaming works best at home with good internet but then what’s the point, who would use it? WELL, as a Mac user, I would. I was excited to play 12 Minutes earlier this year but I couldn’t stand the console controls since the game was clearly designed with mouse controls in mind. I thought I had a brilliant idea to load Xbox’s Cloud Gaming site on my MacBook only to discover that it could not register any peripherals in the game (mouse, keyboard, etc). I know the game was also available on Steam, but since I’m already paying for GamePass I wanted to play it there.

David Lindholm

Where Ridley!? First of all, well done Kyle on your prediction that Ridley wasn’t in Metroid Dread. But what did you all think of his omission? Ridley is to Samus what Ganon is to Link and his absence honestly surprised me. Especially since this was touted as the endpoint of the mainline Metroid game series. Hell, I wouldn’t have minded if they forcibly shoved him in somehow as a clone of a painting of a cyborg version of himself. I’m not sure there was even a reference to him in there. Would’ve loved one last showdown. Your thoughts?
