Forrest With Two Rs

Hello Minimum Maximum, What settings do you make sure to check out before starting a new game? I always turn motion blur off and subtitles on. It's usually nice to know if a PC game has quicksave, too! Thanks, Forrest With Two Rs

Sean Gibbons

Hello Minnmax Crew! I've been playing Metroid Dread lately and I can't help myself from comparing it to indy games like Hollow Knight and Ori. I'm really enjoying the game, but I feel like the added production value makes the game and it’s art style less visually unique than those two games. It seems like Indy Devs are able to take greater risks with their art styles than bigger studios. Would you rather see AAA studios get more abstract and creative with their visuals, or do you want Sony and Microsoft to continue to push for realism until games look like live action movies? -Sean

when you vacation do you like to pack your days with activities or relax and fart around your hotel?

Drew Waranis

Howdy Ben and CLCs new and old, Longtime listener and first time caller. FYI, the setup to this question contains a tiny, fully-redacted spoiler. The panel for Janet Ghoulcia's Max Spoilers - True Colors episode seemed to agree that "[an optional collectible that should have been mandatory]" was an unforced error in an otherwise great game. That got me thinking: What are other great games with an inexplicable unforced error? Bonus points for examples where watching new players makes you grit your teeth waiting for them to encounter/miss it. Cheers, Drew Warlock

Fred Dinovo

Howdy all, What is a daily activity/habit that you have cut out from your life and do not miss? Alternatively what is a daily activity/habit you would like to try to cut out? My example is I was still playing Pokemon GO whenever I was walking my dog, just enough to get the daily check-in streak, but that's about it. After they cutdown the COVID distance boost I cut it cold turkey and was pleasantly surprised that I don't miss it at all. It was more of an obligation than a game at that point. Let's hear those habits! Fred

Hey Leo the other day I was remembering when you, Jeff Cork and Joe Juba did "Back of the Disc" trivia on the GI show. Do you remember that from a couple years ago? It was so absurd and one of my favorite GI moments. Here's a link (go to 1:15 mark): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RJhcO4lXC8

If you were teaching the history of video games, what single game would have as the most impactful to the field of video game design?

micspam

After Jeff mentioned the fact he still had a shrink-wrapped copy of GTA 5, I had a horrible thought pop into my head. GTA 6 is totally going to talk about COVID right? Since Matt and Jacob are here I do have a real question though--Despite the unparalleled commercial success of GTAV/GTAO, it feels like neither title has had any noticible cultural impact either within the industry or not. Am I wrong to think this way, and if I'm not wrong, why did this juggernaut title just get basically ignored?

Jason Wojnar

Hi Everyone, When Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 came out I said to myself that I would get 10 million points in a 2 minute run in every level (except Chopper Drop, F that place). I only just accomplished this goal, with Downtown and New York taking the longest, though in several stages I had close to 30 million points (not to brag or nothing). I spent hours upon hours doing this even though there was no reward other than my own satisfaction. When was the last time you set a ridiculous personal goal for yourself in a video game and did you pull it off? Jason Wojnar

You find a hidden chozo statue that grants you one ability from samus’ suit to use in your everyday life. What do you pick and why?

Luca Alberti

Hi MinnMax Crew! Yoshio Sakamoto in an interesting personality of the industry, on one hand he has been a key figure for franchises such as Metroid, Rhythm Heaven, Wario Ware and Tomodachi Life (yes, Tomodachi Life, the game that sold more than the best selling Metroid game) however for the past decade his name has been associated with only one thing by the general public: the portrayal of Samus in Metroid Other M that lead to the long hiatus of the series. How do you feel about one big misstep changing the overall perception of someone who otherwise provided countless enjoyable and beloved games? When announcing Metroid Dread at E3 2021 Sakamoto introduced the developer MercurySteam saying they have “great taste”, after finishing the game I gotta say, I kinda get it now. Cheers!

SIDEWINDER17

Hello cohorts! Is there a game that has been announced that you are looking forward to but they have released very little or zero info since the initial announcement. Personally I am looking forward to Sons of the Forest, the sequel to The Forest. I played the original about a year ago, enjoyed it a lot and was pleasantly surprised that a sequel is in the works but zero new information for quite a while. Also I'd throw in Praey for the Gods as another game that's on sort of a hiatus. Thanks for all the stellar content!

Adam Cohen

Hi MinnMax Crew! Maybe Apple Arcade changes this, but how often do you play mobile games? Do you ever play freemium "gotcha" games? Do prefer to play games that cost a couple of bucks so there's no micro transactions? Do you play video games like Slay the Spire or Crypt of the Necrodancer that have been covered to mobile?

Ryan Foshee

Hey, howdy, hi Minn-Friends! I hope you all are well. In your opinion, what video game item with a real world equivalent has the biggest discrepancy between its use in-game vs in real life? My money is on the boomerang. Every boomerang I’ve ever encountered in gaming is an OP gift from the heavens. Meanwhile, I had a boomerang as a kid and it was basically just a weird stick. Thoughts? Thanks! Ryan

Hey all, What are your 'free passes' in entertainment? Something you'll give a shot regardless of critical or popular opinion. For instance, anything with Neil Gaiman attached gets a guaranteed look from me. No prior knowledge necessary.

Ed K

Aloha min-max , I’m sourcing this question from my fiancé. “If you could turn any fruit into a video game - what would it be and why?” Our choice is melon, obviously. Keep up the good work.

John Richards

Hello Cohorts! With a lot of big releases dropping in the coming months and the relatively short attention span of “gamers” and games media, do you feel pressure to play games immediately on release? Follow up: do you find it difficult to start a game after it’s already fallen out of the zeitgeist?

Bryce Blackmore

G'day everyone, What if your earliest memory of a "this is more than just a game" moment for you?

Jalopy Slow

Hey there Minimum Maxers, The Guardians of the Galaxy developers recently gave outlets hands-on time with the game. After a few ho-hum trailers leaving people somewhat unimpressed many have now done a complete 180 on the game and boarded the train to hype town! (Check out the Ben Moore preview at Easy Allies) It leaves me wondering about how other games have been left behind or shrugged off after only having a trailer shown at a virtual conference. Games need to be played! Won’t somebody please think of the indie-devs?! Thoughts?

Bryce Blackmore

Leo, why haven't you played a game of outlaster with Ben on stream with some minnmax folk considering Ben loves survivor so much. I think this would be a blast. That is all.

Joemomma

Alright, settle this: Subtitle or number? When a game comes out which do you prefer? I know some people (not pointing fingers) prefer a "nice clean number" but I find numbers to be too simple and sometimes intimidating. Imagine if Mario Odyssey was called Super Mario Bros 9, who the heck would jump in on that? "What happened in the other 8?", they would say and Nintendo would go bankrupt

Joseph Stanichar

Hello Ben and the [INSERT CUTE GROUP NAME HERE]! I recently got back into A Plague Tale after not clicking with it, and right after I got back it started getting really good! It got me thinking, what are some of your best memories of leaving a game (or show, book, etc.) right before it "got good?" Thanks guys! (P.S. let me know if you ever need someone on the show, I miss you guys!) :)

Keith Nettles

Long time watcher (sounds creepy), first time questioner here. What's something you like the smell of that most people don't??

Troy Ellison

Hi Ben and the CLCs! Hey,that metroid dread game is pretty neat! This game has hooked me pretty well since starting last Thursday night. It's also a little weird for me though considering this is the "last" game in the metroid saga, but my first metroid game I've ever played. So my experience for metroid until prime 4/mercury steams next game (hopefully) will be working backwards in a sense to experience the other games. Has there ever been some kind of media (games, books, movies, TV, music, etc.) that you came to in the middle or at the end of its run? How did it affect your enjoyment of it?

Taylor Clark

Hey minnmax hows it going? My question os what is the game you were most excited for that you never played?

Josh LaBaw

With the component shortages are PS5, and Xbox Series X going to have a longer lifecycle?

Devin

Hi Ben, Jacob, Leo and MIKE DRUCKER!?! Mike, big fan. It shouldn't need to be said, but if you're on Twitter you should follow Mike. Anyway, Ben said last episode that; "I like Physics" (regarding that Stephen Hawking film). Which I think is great. I'm a big fan of gravity, and mostly exist in a state of inertia. What's your favorite scientific discipline, or which one do you wish you knew more about?

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and Friennds, How many Chuggas before the choo choo?

humblebees

Hey MinnMax crew! I'm playing the new Metroid like many others and it occurred to me that Samus is one of the few silent protagonists that really works for me being silent. (light Metroid Dread spoilers, literally intro cutscene). It was almost weird that the intro recap text was written in first person from her POV. Whereas during the cutscene it was cool that she doesn't respond to her AI's warnings about the mission. Kind of like the DOOM Marine's characterization in the more recent DOOM games. Can you folks think of any other good silent protagonists? Does it only work with stoic cool people? Or is dumb goofy silent protagonist good too (a.k.a. Link)? Do you prefer voiced or silent? Cheers, Bevan

Hello, crew. After doing a little bit of research, I discovered Mike worked on the best game on the 3DS, Kid Icarus: Uprising! Just in case you misread, it is not the most underrated game; it is the BEST game on the 3DS by a landslide. I'm so glad Mike is here, and is giving me an excuse to talk about it! So, Mike, what is the best joke you wrote for that game? P.S. Ben, you guys did this game dirty when you hosted your "Goodbye 3DS" episode of the Game Informer show. A full 15 seconds was reserved solely to poop on the controls, and was then compared to the N64 memory expansion pack that came with every copy of Donkey Kong 64 (which... I still don't quite understand). If you're up for it, you guys should go around the room and say something nice about the game to make up for it. Still love the show, regardless. Keep up the great work!

The Sideline Crowd

Hello Ben and Crew! When you're playing a 2D Mario game, what run and jump button combo do you prefer: Y dash + B jump or X dash + A jump? Personally, I've always felt that a Y/B combo to be the best way to play 2d Mario when I have the option

Joe Dean

Hey CLCs, I'm currently rewatching Cowboy Bebop -still excellent and mostly holds up- because despite my better judgment I'm actually kinda excited about the live action Netflix show (I know I'm an idiot.) So when was a time you got excited for something even though you were very skeptical about it? Thanks, Joe Dean PS Mike I really enjoyed your Boss Fight Book on Silent Hill 2. And would recommend everyone check it out.

Nick Beattie

Hey there, Cohorts! I’m currently in my first semester of grad school (I’m pursuing a Masters in Library Science!) and in one of my classes this week, we discussed libraries and whether they should include video games in their collections. We explored everything from liscencing deals to play times, and was generally just an interesting topic. So, I am interested in what you all think: Should libraries have video game selections for its patrons? If so, what kind of games should be offered? Keep up the great work!

Mike Lynch

Heya CLC's! What sound makes you panic more: The Guardian music in Breath of The Wild? or The sound of an EMMI tracking you in Metroid Dread?

Fatt Mish

Ever see something weird downtown?

Geoff Enright

Well friends, As possibly comedy enthusiasts or cinephiles, how have you liked the new MST3K? I have watched a few episodes recently and enjoyed what I've seen. -Geoff aka Groffles

Hunter Sax

Can I get a whoop whoop for PSP music? That was my introduction to Coheed and Cambria via the demo UMD. Anyone else have bizzare introductions to other artists or mediums through video games?

Blake Kibby

Hey CLCs, I just blasted through The Matrix Trilogy and the Animatrix in preparation for the fourth film due in December. It took me right back to high school, diving deep into the universe and the lore, reading the comics, and mostly playing Enter the Matrix. For better or for worse, Enter the Matrix is a big piece of the Matrix Trilogy; with more than an hour of live-action footage written and directed by The Wachowskis, it fills some significant story beats that set up the final film, The Matrix: Revolutions. If you were an obsessive fan, like me, you absorbed everything you could and got a better understanding of the film trilogy as a whole in the process. However, Adult Blake recognizes that a video game shouldn't be more or less required reading to understand a film; that the text should stand on its own. So, I'm wondering: what are the best and worst video game crossovers or tie-ins over the years?

Matthew Weatherley

G'day Minnmaxeroos You have been selected by a secret government agency for your expert video game knowledge. The world is under attack by Aliens. We have the ability to pull 5 characters from video games to form an elite team to fight back. Who do you choose and why. Smash bros rules apply. As in the character must originate from a video game. As a bonus question can you please name your group of elite digital hero's.

Andrew Rennolds

Hey all, Quick game for you. Create a new game which is a cross between your favourtie game ever and favorite move ever. You have 60 seconds to sell the other cohorts on your game.

John

So…. Are all the games coming out in spring 2022?

Ian Switaj

Hello MinnMax crew and guests! By nature I'm a very careful gamer. Just completed a major story segment? Better save. Do I sense a difficult fight coming up? Better save. Do I feel like I'm going to be interrupted by something IRL? Better save. This is important because I'm playing Metroid Dread alongside the rest of the community for the Deepest Dive -- and I'm loving it by the way -- and at one point decided to take a break from the critical path to go back to explore some areas and grab some powerups I couldn't previously. When I got back I was met by a boss that was giving me some difficulty that I figured I'd come back to without a second thought only to come back to my game later and realize that I had not saved and thus lost close to an hour of game time. All in all it wasn't a big deal because I had an idea of where to go but it still stung because I didn't do something I normally would. My question, what sort of mistake or sticky situation that you've gotten yourself into -- either in games or IRL -- occurred because you didn't do something that's generally second nature to you?

podbod

What's the best use of a potato?

PetrichorZ

Now that October is here, do you have a favorite lesser know scary movie you like to recommend to people? Mine is probably Banshee Chapter. It's weird mix of MK Ultra, Lovecraft and Hunter S Thompson. -Bryan

Grizzled Gaming

Hey gang! What's one of your favorite words that is just fun to say? I'd like to submit "wallet" for your consideration.

Nick Tarry

Hey Ben and the CLCs! First of all, I love the show and I'm a long time listener going back to the Game Informer days. I recently decided to support ya'll on Patreon because I couldn't deny myself the opportunity to be apart of the Deepest Dive for Metroid Dread, but also because you guys deserve it, damnit! Keep up the good work! Now onto my question: in Metroid Dread, when Samus is defeated, we get a very cool animation of her suit cracking and exploding followed by a brief look at Samus in her Zero Suit. I've personally always been fascinated by the death animation in 2D Metroid games, but it made me wonder - what other games have cool death sequences and what is your favorite way to die in a game?

Taylor C

The Last of Us series is filming in my city right now and it’s all very exciting for our northern Canadian community. I’m curious if any of the cohorts have had any random or exciting run-ins with famous people outside of the gaming world.

Jeremy McPhail

I used Leo's video "Products: Now for Men" in my journalism class for a debate on gender inequality vs. school traditions like the powderpuff football games. Can you people in the biz help me think of other topics for the students to debate or subjects to be covered in journalism? I could look up stuff on Google, but that's boring.
