(also sorry to cheat and drop a 2nd comment buuuuut) I LOVED that the final EMMI has destroyed in a cutscene. They were such a threat early on, so brooding and absolute murderers - it showed Samus's growth and how much of a badass fighter she is now that the last of these stone cold killers wasn't even a boss fight, she just grabbed their syringe spike, drained it of all their energy and the fight was over before it began. Really signified to me that the story is so much bigger than you originally could have realized. Love it.

Loves: omg I LOVED how the developers were so kind as to put you right back to the screen before the boss every time you die! So helpful! Needs improvement: I was so frustrated I couldn’t use the D pad for input. With boss fights and shine spark puzzles that have you often using every single button at precise times, I was frequently wishing I could just use the D pad to make sure I input “up” at the right time!

Troy Ellison

One flavor text detail I ended up loving about the EMMIs is how they each represent in some way the ability you acquire from them. To recap: - white emmi: climbs on walls in intro cutscene = spider magnet -green emmi: uses air ducts for the first time = morph ball - yellow emmi: charges at you = super boost/shinespark - light blue emmi: shoots an ice beam at you = ice missed - purple emmi: can see/shoot through terrain = wave beam - orange emmi: releases explosion prior to encounter = power bomb It was a cool way to feel like you overcoming the ability first before you acquired it. Side note: the scariest thing about metroid dread was playing through the entire game only to realize that's when hard mode unlocks

In frozen Artaria, the doors are frozen to guide you down a one way path to Cataris to be able to beat the boss. Then you are supposed to return to defrosted Artaria, get the Screw Attack and continue up the elevator to Burenia. There is a small diagonal hole in Artaria that can be bypassed with a well timed morph-ball transformation mid spacejump that allows you to get the screw attack before defrosting, but sadly the elevator platform to Burenia is frozen so the sequence break does not include skipping the Cataris boss. Almost a very cool moment :(

I loved this game so much I did a 100% hard mode run! One small detail I noticed: The transport Samus uses to access the sky fortress at the end of the game is a sphere. There is also Samus' morph ball, the visual scanners outside the X quarantine, and the computer screen Adam speaks from. It seems to be a recurring theme with Chozo technology.

My favorite moment in this game is when you meet Quiet Robe. Where an Emmi is charging Samus, and then it deactivates and Samus has her power beam still focused on it. Then she hears a noise behind her, and aims at Quiet Robe. When he bows, she lets her aim down, and rests her arm on her knee. And you can tell from the way she does this she’s exhausted. It’s just such smart visual storytelling, and lets you know through body language Samus’ emotional state. I love it, and I immediately died in the next boss (we’ll say it was on purpose) so I could take a screenshot of that moment.

The back half of the game felt like an abridged Metal Gear Solid, from being deceived into unleashing the big threat, to it's very own "Did you like my sunglasses?" moment. The Big Bad even ends up inside a giant bipedal thing roaring at you before you make your escape and an ally that you think has abandoned/betrayed you helps you out one last time before the credits roll.

Nick!!

I played for 9 hours before I discovered hitting left on the d-pad expands the mini map!

Matthew Paxton

I wished we spent more time with the plot twist that Samus is slowly becoming a Metroid, the very thing that she spent so long trying to eradicate, and has been so frequently described as the greatest threat in the galaxy. New gameplay elements could have been introduced that reflect a Metroid's nature; perhaps some of Samus's Chozo abilities could have been replaced with Metroid abilities. Either way, I feel like we did not spend nearly enough time to feel the full impact of what is a ground-shaking turn of events.

I enjoyed Dread but something felt off. I didn’t vibe with the game’s design. It felt like the game was actively pushing against exploring its world. Throughout the entire game, it blocks off access to previous areas as a way to funnel you in the right direction. It was frustrating to me to constantly not be able to go to previous places to try out my powers. The game tries to place power ups while it’s funneling you, but that doesn’t feel like exploring. The parts of each area you were allowed to be in were small enough that there wasn’t many places to go at a given point. Did you ever feel this way and or how do you feel about it?

Hey guys! The 2nd last and final boss gave me that heart in my throat feeling of triumph when I finally took them down, each mechanic had me going “wait there’s more?!” So my question is, what boss gave you that same feeling in Metroid dread, and what other boss from any other game gave you that feeling?

Allan

After the discussion last week about lore and specifically Samus' backstory with the Chozo, it's funny to me that one of the most stand out moments to me was hearing Samus speak Chozo. I love that long drawn out pause she takes before she starts to talk, and when she did it took me a second to realize that she wasn't speaking English. I just found it so unexpected and cool and I can't really explain why, except that I'm a big Metroid nerd. I mean, of course she speaks the language of the space birds that raised her! It just never occurred to me that we'd actually hear it in a game. ...Also, Quiet Robe clearly says "Sebulba" multiple times and that made me laugh. It seems to be Chozo for "however."

John Bogan

You know how you can fill in every little square of the map? I found myself getting pretty OCD about not leaving any unfilled spaces. Its just rewarding to “color it all in”. It’s funny how you can almost just look at the minimap and do this with the little Samus helmet icon. Once you get the space jump you can pretend it’s a minigame of flappy bird or something! Am I a freak?

Connor

The sequence after getting the space jump sucks real bad! The door to progress is blocked by a movable platform, but it shows up as a wall on the map. 2 and a half hours "exploring" and all I got was 2 missile tanks and a couple shortcuts I couldn't fully use that became tedious detours full of hard hitting X.

Shawn Mills

I got very stuck at the Drogyga boss fight and trying to figure out how to beat it. I figured out that I could knock out the boss and ride the elevator at the top across the screen but the boss kept waking up before I could make it across. After about a dozen tries I finally realized that there was a button on the side I could hit to drain the area which speeds up the elevator. I liked the idea for the boss but I wish the game was a little bit clearer about what you needed to do.

Hunter Blessing

The first thing that stood out to me in the opening moments of the game was that if I tried to double jump without touching the left stick, Samus did an air roll without gaining any height. It didn't seem useful at the time. But after gaining the Screw Attack, the semi-useless move became a powerful ability. Even Samus' most basic moves have become deadly.

Joe Dean

Hey Metroids, I couldn't believe that twist ending where it turned out that you were Metroid the entire time. On a more serious note I would like to know everyone's completion percentage and time: 100%, 10 hours 56 minutes for ya boy, Joe Dean. Please rank Samus's outfits: Blue Power, Orange Varia, Purple Gravity, and Green Metroid. Personally I would love our figma figure or something of that Metroid armor, but I don't think it's my favorite. I think the Blue Power suit looked the best. My home planet needs me, Joe Dean

Tanner Methven

Hey Minn Beaks, How did you all feel about the chozo soldiers, specifically the ones with the guns. None of the main boss battles gave me even half as much as grief as those guys did. I enjoyed most of the fights but the chozo soldiers nearly made me throw my controller at the wall.

whitemex

Finally just rolled credits! Such a hype ass ending with Samus's transformation and her Kamehameha sized beam. I wish there was a little more to Raven Beak's X form but the sheer badassery made up for it. Final thought, i really was expecting at least one Metroid show up after many games telling us the Metroids were extinct but we were the Metroid all along

Ian Switaj

Is it safe to say safe to that Raven Beak is the most Machiavellian villain in the entire Metroid series? For starters, it was funny last week how everyone was noting how ADAM called Samus "Lady" only for him to not call her that whenever communicating with him at a Network Station. The reason for that being that Raven Beak had been impersonating ADAM ever since Samus lost communication with ADAM in the elevator at the beginning of the game to achieve his ultimate ends. Raven Beak set up the entire conflict of Dread so that regardless of what Samus did his goal of creating a Metroid army would be successful. Samus is captured and killed by one of the E.M.M.I.'s? No big whoop; they'll just extract the Metroid DNA directly from Samus. Samus awakens her Metroid powers and Raven Beak is able to convince her to join him? Cool. No more needs to be done. Samus awakens her powers and refuses to join him? No worries; Raven Beak -- a warrior whose mantra is literally, "Power is everything," -- is so confident is his own battle prowess that he thinks he could take her down regardless and just create a clone army of subservient Samuses. Truly a real Xanatos Gambit. FYI - If you don't know who Xanatos is, watch Gargoyles; the host of "Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction" voices the bad guy.

Ian Switaj

Dumb fact: All nine areas in the game begins with a letter from A-I. * Artaria * Burenia * Cataris * Dairon * Elun * Ferenia * Ghavoran * Hanubia * Itorash

Noah Allison

Fighting the Chozo Soldier got a bit old. It was challenging and fun the first time, but then you do it maybe 3 more times. Even with the change-ups, my strategy and patterns from the first fight (shoutout to the Flash Shift) carried me through every encounter.

FrostedSherbert

The Chozo soldier bosses gave me more trouble than anything else in dread, especially that gold one! I thought I would never defeat it. Raven Beak was a really cool boss fight and it was pretty rad watching Samus going toe to toe with him!

James Welsh

The second to last E.M.M.I. that chased you through that obstacle course loop gave me such a run for my money, that I was terrified of the last E.M.M.I. So, imagine my surprise when Samus actually repeled the final E.M.M.I by herself. I know it happened in a cutscene, but that was such a cool way to show how strong Samus had become at that point. She's come a long way from uselessly kicking the E.M.M.I. while failing to escape.

Clemens Zobel

This is my first Metroid, wasn't terribly excited in the beginning but now I'm really enjoying it. Was really feeling the dread in some of these environments and against some of these bosses. Slogging through water while evading EMMIs was the worst! My least favorite boss moves were Escue's rapid fire attack and Experiment No. Z-57 crescent beams / fan combo. I almost never fully dodged those attacks and just had to take those hits!

Blaringblur

I absolutely adored Metroid Dread and it's easily my GotY, but we have to talk about the one and only real flaw to me: the game's soundtrack just isn't up to snuff with the series' rich musical history. Joe Juba brought it up in the last episode and it has been widely discussed as Dread's weakspot among the Metroid community, but this franchise has my favorite music in all of gaming, and it makes this so much more gutwrenching than it would be otherwise. What did you all think of the soundtrack by the end? Was it still mostly a non-issue without those high expectations attached from being a Metroid superfan? I'm sure the more ambient, mechanical, less melodic music was a conscious choice to keep the atmosphere tense, but it's just not as good as the Metroid classics. The fact that Dread relegates the Lower Brinstar remix to basically being the Chozo theme (it's the song that plays whenever they show up in cutscenes) had me really sad we couldn't hear it longer - I think it would have fit perfectly in-game for the ice areas after the world freezes over. Interestingly, the only other remix I know of is the intro music (The Theme of Samus Aran), which is of course from Super Metroid's intro. I respect the choice for less remixes, but I definitely expected to hear more "Metroid-y" and melodic tunes as you get to the more organic areas of the game and leave the industrial early sections.

Did anyone else scoff at seeing hard mode unlocked after beating the game? Like the game wasn’t hard enough lol… in all seriousness, what was everyone’s game clock at the end of the game? I was was close to 13 hours to beat the game, which I thought was going to be longer as I struggled on many occasions.

David Edgar

Did anyone else have an issue with the pacing of the second half? It was just a series of boss fights where half of them are identical. It's been ages for me, is this standard in a Metroid game?

shades42

Did anyone else get the feeling that the Chozo Robots were similar to the mantis lord fight in Hollow Knight? I felt that having done that fight over and over again, it prepared me for those fights. Also kudos, Hanson on finishing your first 2D metroid! End time for me was 9:08:13, what was everyone else's first end time?

Marc S

This honestly might be my GOTY at moment, but I gotta say, I could have really done without the EMMI mechanic entirely. The first couple of them were exciting, but getting closer to the end of the game they were at best boring and at worst were causing me to stop playing out of frustration. I loved the game overall, but it's a shame that such a significant part of the gameplay didn't land for me at all.

Bryan Tylec

Sure the E.M.M.Is have a cool design and are scary as hell but what about those colors?! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more random assignment of enemy colors in a game. Lime green? Baby blue?! Regular purple!?! As much as I hated dealing with them, I couldn’t wait to see what the next one looked like. Which was your favorite E.M.M.I and which random color do you wish you had seen in the game?

Ian Switaj

Not that it matters but I'll ask this anyway since it goes against established Metroid tradition and I'm sure it's been asked/discussed elsewhere: What was everyone's opinion on the rewards for beating the game during a certain time limit (sub-4, 4-8 and 8+ hours) being artwork representing previous Metroid titles and not the standard Samus "removes her helmet" or "removes her Power Suit" sequence that has been a staple since the series' inception (though I will note that if you get all the endings you unlock a piece of artwork that's the same as the 100% item bonus but with a Zero Suit Samus)?

Andrew

Boss fights were tough, but in the end mostly a puzzle of learning the patterns and then executing. I never had a close boss fight where I barely won or lost. I was either completely annihilated or I got the pattern down and was barely touched en route to victory.

Jared B

So wait. The bird guy was Samus was her dad? As somebody who has never played a Metroid game this made no sense to me. Overall how did people feel about the story?

Matthew Weatherley

One of the great joys this game has given me is a chance to bond with my older brother. We are both in our thirties and it has been a while since he has played a difficult game. In the first half he was struggling with where to go and was constantly lost. We sat down together and examined the map. I showed him how to use the tools available on the map and how to read the language of a metroidvania map. It was that moment when I truly started to appreciate the game design on display here. The game rarely tells you exactly where to go but it always seemed to be speaking to me in its own language nudging me in the right direction. Dread may be this genre at its best.

Hollow Knight made me become a fan of the genre and I've since deep-dived on indie metroidvanias but this is my first actual 2D Metroid and am I wrong for feeling like I'm not incentivized to explore? There's no optional abilities to pick up, hidden characters or bits of lore to discover nor any secret/optional bosses to find. Sure, there's some tricky platforming challenges to get some health tanks or missile boosts but if you're doing them, likely you're doing for the challenge itself, not the reward.

It's Hugo's Nook

Also, I'm not normally a fan of boss fake-outs but I gotta say: when I finally defeated the three phases of Raven Beak after an hour banging my head against it, only to see him being infected by the X Parisite i felt like the GTA meme "ah sh*t, here we go again..." - But to my surprise the "fourth phase" was just a power fantasy to showcase how OP your new form is. Did you guys enjoy that or you'd have liked a more traditional final bout?

It's Hugo's Nook

In the final moments, Samus absorbs QR-X (Quiet Robe X) and reverts from her Metroid Suit into her Gravity one. I personally think that was done for gameplay reasons for a future Metroid 6, so she wouldn't start as OP. But, with that said, what role do you think her Metroid form will play on future games? I could see it being a limit break/low health type of situation making it kick in and a potential for new, more organic abilities being unlocked - she could go full-on megaman absorbing bosses powers

It's Hugo's Nook

Lastly, I think it's pretty smart and cool to have Samus herself become a Metroid - this way you keep the franchise name without having to always be about the little blue guys. And to boot people won't be wrong anymore when they call her metroid! Gotta say though, Samus is hell of DNA Cocktail: human, mawkin, thoha and Metroid (with a hint of X infection and Phazon) all mixed up... geez!

Jalopy Slow

Got two items for the "attention to detail" list. 1. The Pulse Radar scanning the background is totally immersive and makes it feel like these levels exist beyond the 2D plane. 2. Samus only needs to have one foot on a button or switch to activate it! She's even animated to have just one of her feet slowly lower as the button gets depressed. So cool.

Nick Tarry

Not really a question, just something I realized after finishing the game. The baby Metroid Samus rescued in Metroid 2 has now saved her life three times: once in Super Metroid when it helped her defeat Mother Brain, a second time in Metroid Fusion where it's DNA created the X antidote and then in Dread it's ultimately what saved her from death and is responsible for her transformation into a weird Metroid hybrid... person?

Barney

Did anyone lean into Samus's phantom cloak for the late game Emmis? It was a neat new feature, but never found it too useful. Opted to outrun each time.

Jake Dye

I was stunned that no one in the first half brought up Samus’ boots. It’s most obvious in the scenes where she absorbs the EMMI, but there’s this little plate on the top of her ankle that slides out to allow her to crouch down. It’s such a tiny detail but such a cool bit of sci-fi design that I was so impressed by every time I saw it. Huge revelation: the power suit is very cool.

David Lindholm

Where Ridley!? First of all, well done Kyle on your prediction that Ridley wasn’t in Metroid Dread. But what did you all think of his omission? Ridley is to Samus what Ganon is to Link and his absence honestly surprised me. Especially since this was touted as the endpoint of the mainline Metroid game series. Hell, I wouldn’t have minded if they forcibly shoved him in somehow as a clone of a painting of a cyborg version of himself. I’m not sure there was even a reference to him in there. Would’ve loved one last showdown. Your thoughts?

David Lindholm

Also, don’t know if we’re allowed two questions but hooow did you all find that speed booster puzzle in Burenia? You all know which one I’m talking about! ;)

TheUnchartedWolf

Hey cohorts. Is anyone else disappointed you can't use the metroid armor for a new game plus like mode. I definitely would of done another playthrough just so I can experience the same power fantasy I felt using the infinite rocket launcher in Resident Evil 4

Andy f

Just barely beat the game and missed the cut off point to submit a comment but I just wanted to say I really enjoy the game and playing along with y’all.

Greg Spenser

Replaying the game on Hard, one thing I noticed is the game is constantly keeping the difficulty balanced by making the resources you need available when you need it most. I just cleared the room that overheats right before the Varia Suit and when surviving until the end, you're given one of those little monster nests with endless monsters to destroy and let's you refill your health which at that point, you probably need.

Brendan O'Connor

The quasi-QTE modes triggered when you counter Raven Beak are amazing and empowering. I particularly love that the normal firing controls still work in this state, you can fire rockets or lasers, and the boss takes actual damage from them. All with no "Press X to Shoot" prompts on screen! The Metroid Samus blast vs Raven Beaks X-form is a nice call back to how we take out the EMMIs with the Omega Blaster as well!

Tim Holisak

Hi Minntroids, My first Metroid game and I thought it was top notch! My only real complaint is that the combat system is so deep, and so many of the abilities don’t unlock until relatively late in the game, that by the time I finally felt fluid with the mechanics it was all over! Am I crazy, or is the lack of tough as nails optional area’s / bosses / challenges, that require a mastery of the complete set of combat systems, a glaring flaw in an otherwise excellent package? Am I the only one who feels like I’m all dressed up with no place to go?
