With Inscryption on the podcast today, I'd like the panel to discuss what makes a "meta" game hit for them, and what turns them off; things like self-reference, games within games, the classic 4th wall break, etc.

Point of order concerning Kyle’s comments on Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy last week. Kyle incorrectly stated that all items, posters, etc. in Lil’ Star-Lord’s room were fictional except for the Disney properties. Why you doin’ Iron Maiden that way, Kyle? The Iron Maiden 1983 masterpiece “Piece of Mind” can be found in Lil’ Star-Lord’s room. Logo, artwork, everything. Additionally, the player can pick up Steve Harris’ wrist band and Lil’ Quill comments on how awesome it was to catch at a live show. Steve Harris is the bass player and founding member of Maiden. C’mon, man. Crank up “Where Eagles Dare” from the soundtrack and bask in the full-metal glory of Iron Maiden. This game is made 666% better by Maiden’s inclusion. (Also, the developer licensed the Rolling Stone logo and magazine likeness.) This game is a banger, dude. Horns up \m/

Hey MinnMaxers, With the release of House of Ashes and the announcement of the final game in “Season 1” titled The Devil in Me. Do you think there will be a Season 2 of The Dark Pictures Anthology? I personally love those games and it’s a Halloween tradition between my wife and I. I feel like it’s an extremely niche genre and hope they keep doing them. I just feel like I don’t hear them being successful within the gaming circle. Am I doomed to just enjoy these while they last? Do you guys have different outlook on them?

Hello MinnMax question crew, I have been to the future, and I am here to report back. I recently purchased Jedi: Fallen order on a deep sale on PS4. Upon giving the game a try, I was disappointed by both the load times and how unresponsive the game felt overall. After a couple of hours of play, I decided to restart the game, streaming it (over Ethernet) through Xbox Gamepass Cloud. Microsoft recently updated the Cloud versions of games to run at Series X spec, and Jedi: Fallen Order received a Series X/PS5 update a few months back. I enjoyed the game significantly more over the cloud in this configuration than running natively on my own hardware. Despite some input lag, the game felt more responsive at 60 FPS, and the reduced loading times made its Souls-inspired design far more bearable. I plan to play both Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite this way later this year. Have any of you tried cloud gaming over a wired connection? It made a big difference for me.

riders republic is incredible. i've been obsessed over the past week, and at this rate it might dethrone skate 2 as my personal GOAT. the key innovation is they removed all punishments and time delays. there's no resources or fuel or anything to worry about, you just immediately start exploring and can swap sports literally at any moment if you get bored. what game or genre do you want to see given the same treatment? mario kart with a forza horizon style open world seems like an inevitability...

Doreen Ford

What do you think will be the least impressive thing in gaming that we think is so cool now?

RickyWinterborn

i wonder if in 100 years video games will be a dead hobby, similar to baseball cards. if you think about what people did for fun 100 years ago, it was like stick ball or something? kick the can etc. Maybe video games will be a distant memory?

Mark Letarte

Hello Ben and company. Battlefield is coming out this month which begs the question, what is your favorite field of battle? What’s your favorite multiplayer map? I’m picking Library from Goldeneye because of my high school memories playing split screen with friends.

Manic_pixel_

Hey cohorts and Ben, what IP would make for the worst video game?

Shawn Mills

Do you think we will ever hit a point where graphics will hit their peak of looking realistic and developers will have to innovate in other areas such as AI or will there always be improvements that can be made in graphics?

IanTClark

Both of my kids grew up on Minecraft. Today we own Minecraft Java and the Windows 10 versions. We also own the Switch, PS4, XboxOne, and Wii U console versions. Of course we originally got it on iOS over a decade ago. I’ve never really played this game. As a 44 year old gamer boy, is there any reason I should start playing Minecraft now that it’s on GamePass? Or should I just stick to playing as Steve in Smash bros?

Connor

I'm hoping that long-term, we'll see more technically advanced independent games from small teams that can compete against giant corporate games. More people playing more grass-roots. Of course, our society will have collapsed by this point so they'll be about the hyper cool Society 2.0

Salutations cohorts! My brother and I were having a debate on if never before played backlog games can be your game of the year. As the elder and wiser brother, I say that a goty for 2021 must be released during the year 2021. He tried to say Windwaker was his game of the year because he just finally bought a Gamecube and played through it for the first time and I rejected this. His counter argument was if that were true Resident Evil 4 VR could not be a contender for my goty since it’s a VR port of an old game. I say since it was released in 2021 and is a whole new experience in VR, it can absolutely be on my goty list, and his can go on a backlog oldie of the year list. (BOOTY™) We need a jury of our peers to give us a verdict on this. Please help us settle this sibling squabble. Keep up the great work!

Howdy Ben and the Gang! I recently got to chat with Ben about the bloating budgets and dev times of games and what that means for the future. However, another trend has me thinking. Ben reminded me of Assassins Creed Infinity, and how some games are becoming "live service". I'm a bigger fan of stand-alone single player games myself, but it seems this is the more lucrative model and it's only a matter of time before it becomes the norm. How many franchises do you think will move to this model in the next 10-15 years? What's a series that you think might be a shoo-in? What does this mean for gaming as a whole? P.S. Leo Vader's video on why kids love horror was indeed quite hilarious, thanks for the recommendation!

Hello Ben & 'The Crypt-Kicker Five', If you had to apply a Back 4 Blood card to your real life, what positive attribute would you need on that card to be willing to take a -10% Damage Resistance.

God's Garage

Hello Bean Hanson and the CLC's. After yesterday's shenanigans involving Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, the question must be asked: What is the best bean? Baked? Kidney? GREEN? the possibilities are endless!

Darkwing Drew

Hey all! If you could pick any world (Video Game, Book, or Movie) to set the next Forza Horizon in, where would it be and why?

Israel Imru

Simple question: Think of your favorite video game genre and of your favorite game. Is your favorite game a part of your favorite genre? For example, my favorite genre is 2D Platformers and I think my favorite game is Super Mario World. For me, it's a straight line between both choices, but I have noticed many people have a disconnect between what they say is their favorite video game and what they say is their favorite genre -- though I am not necessarily expecting that it should 100% overlap. As an added bonus, I am curious as to what games y'all have as most beaten and what y'all have is most played (raw hours). For me, most beaten is Mega Man X, and most hours is Diablo II or Team Fortress II

Jason Wojnar

What's the longest time you went without playing videogames since becoming a gamer? Was there ever a time where you felt like you were done with games? What brought you back in?

Grizzled Gaming

Hello Bennie Hanson and the Hansonites! What’s the most versatile fruit?

whitemex

Do you have any podcasts you wish you could be a guest on? And do you have any recs for podcasts that you like to listen too?

Ethan Poe

Hey all! So the anticipation for SMTV has me remembering it was the reason I bought a Switch at lost and that has me wondering. How often have you bought hardware at launch for a future title and what have been the biggest successes and disappointments if you have?

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and the Ganng, What game do you think has had the best post-release redemption story? The release of Ghost Recon: Breakpoint's new alternative 2 years after release and drastic changes to gameplay since release due to player critiques come to mind of me. As a fan of the series I'm glad to see Ubisoft not give up and continue to refine the game to what the players want.

Geoff Enright

Hey howdy ho, What's been your most recent impulse buy with your gaming collection? Doesn't even have to be a newly released game. Mine was Northgard on PC. -Geoff aka Groffles

Kris Calkins

When given the option how often do you choose to play a protagonist of the opposite gender? Would you be more likely to on a subsequent playthrough of the game?

Forrest With Two Rs

I think we can learn a lot about the future of games from how they've changed during our lives! What do you think are the biggest differences between the games you liked when you started playing and the ones you like now? Do you feel like the games themselves changed more or did you?

Christian Jimenez

Hi Y'all, I'm gonna try and double dip here see if one gets in haha If we had Extra Lives (insert Extra Live plug here) like in video games, assume we have 10 total, how would you use your extra ones?? How would that affect our world? Do you find yourself attached to games that explore cultures, locations that are personally significant to you even if you don't play them? I'm interested in Forza Horizon 5 because of Mexico but I grew out of racing games a long time ago yet I'm rooting for its success. Thanks.

chris cuevas

Hello Cohorts and hope you're feeling better Ben. What games has everybody finished this year?

betoq92 .

Hello Minnesota Maximus Here is my question you’re on a date and finally comes dinner time. You go to the restaurant only to be told its an hour wait. The hour goes by and you’re still waiting what do y’all do now? Look up a new place, hit up taco bell, keep waiting, go home hungry? Thanks!

Nick Novotny

After having a left thumb injury last month, I’ve been left without my favorite hobby for the foreseeable future. However, that doesn’t mean I’m totally out of luck. What games can you recommend playing with one hand on console or PC. Thanks! -Nick Novotny

Mack Dack

Nintendo innovates their hardware design and how it affects gameplay (Wii, N64 Controller, Switch as a hybrid, 3ds etc..) more than Sony and Microsoft. Do you think Nintendo over the next 50 plus years can continue to innovate at the pace they’ve done or so you see them playing the power game ever against Sony and Microsoft?

Jordan Shaffer

I dropped my switch in a hot tub a few minutes ago (I’m an idiot, I know). I was wondering how many of the cohorts are still on their launch/first switch and how many have had to get a replacement. Do you all have any good or tragic stories of other consoles you had to replace?

Kees ('Case') Mulder

I've decided to start beating SNES games on Switch without skipping, and man, the Nintendo games like Super Mario World are unbelievably far ahead compared to the competition like Joe & Mac. This got me thinking: At what time was the the quality gap between the best & the rest the biggest?

Fatt Mish

Hi MinnMax friends! Should we be worried about AI eventually taking over the majority of game development moving forward? What would be the most apparent negative and positive effects? Thanks for the great show!

Mitch

On last week’s show you said you wanted us to send in fastball questions. Here’s a couple Q: what was the fastest pitch ever thrown in an MLB game? A: 105.1 MPH in 2010 by Aroldis Chapman Q: In what year was the first 100 mph pitch thrown? A: 1974 by Nolan Ryan Q: what are the four different types of fastball? A: Two-seam, four-seam, cutter, and splitter You meant baseball right?

MickManga

I've been gaming since 94 starting with snes. And if there's one I have learned is I can never predict what the next Nintendo system will be like. Though I seriously hope that the next one will also be a handheld and console combo like the Switch. Do any of you have a prediction what Nintendo's next system might be like?

LinkuLuis

Dear Be-Be-Bennie and the Jets. When if ever do you think Nintendo is going to get the backlash that CDPR got with Cyberpunk 2077?. Is the nostalgia always going to be strong enough to keep from letting them get away with subpar and overpriced services like the N64 on the switch online? Love y’all tremendously.

PhillyYeetSteak

Hiya crew! With Bugsnax adding hats in the Bogsnax expansion, lets chat hats! What kind of hat are you most excited to unlock in a game? Backwards ball cap? Fancy a fedora? Seek a sombrero? Try a tasteful top hat? I like a good, fuzzy aviator hat.

Interrotta

Hello Ben and cohorts! For the future of gaming I think within 50 years Call of Duty, FIFA, Madden, all the annual titles will have one hub for each installment, and you pay a price to unlock that year’s roster and game modes. That way you can still play on all your old favorite CoD maps without having to download a completely separate game. What are your favorite first hours in a game? I think mine has to be The Stranger fight in 2018’s God of War. It’s the only fight I’ve had in a game where you feel like a god fighting. Throwing the stranger through trees and watching the destruction around you is still really cool to see.

Solo

It happens sometimes. It's time to sleep and you go to bed. But it's been about 30 minutes and you haven't fallen asleep. Should you just stay down and keep trying to sleep. Or do you get up to do something that will pass time or make you tired? What do you do? What SHOULD you do? Bye. And good night.

God's Garage

In 50 years, I think we’ll see a return to physical media on a industry wide scale, even to the point where companies like Nintendo and Microsoft have branched out using new tech to create new, physical, interactive experiences. Whatever the equivalent of “toys” is in fifty years, I think that while of course they’ll be developing for the microchip consoles we have in our heads, they’ll be working on tangible fun experiences for us to have as well. Also vr will absolutely be the normal, and the tech from Sword Art Online will be widely available

AnAttackCorgi

Hello Hello MinnMax crew! What’re the best features of past consoles you wish were included in current gen consoles?

ddobry

With the news about Concerned Ape’s new chocolatier game, it’s got me thinking about other profession games. There are plenty of farming games of course, but what other profession would make the best sim game? Barber? Jeweler? Molecular biologist?!

Andrew Rennolds

Hi All If you could play any game from the start and the money you make in the first 10 hours you get in real lie what game would you pick?

Marc S

You need a life saving operation, but your insurance will only cover video game characters that have "Doctor" in their names. Which video game doctor are you calling to save your life?

The Pattycake (Patrick H.)

Hello MinnMax Crew! What is your favorite cuisine of the season? I just ate stew for three meals in a row and would love some of your favorite food ideas.

Hootz

Hi guys! When the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes were first announced, they did not leave a very good first impression on me. However, after seeing some of the recent marketing for the game, now I have been unreasonably excited to pick it up, even trying to use sword and shield to get a battle-ready Sinnoh team going. Are there any other games you can recall that had a mediocre first reveal, but did enough work to turn you around on it before the game's release? (Did you feel that way about this remake in particular?) Thanks for making the greatest podcast on the internet!

Thom Blackburn

Howdy MinnMax, With Forza Horizon 5 coming out soon I can't help but wish that I was able to drive my own car in the game. For some reason, one of the Gran Turismo games included a Chevy Lumina in their car list and it was a hoot to see that shit-heap handle just like it used to. So, should racing games include more crappy cars? Thanks, Thom

ChazCheeto

Hi All! Knowing that you all have to sample a lot of games per year, how many games do you think you typically have time to roll credits on in a year. Or if it's a more interesting discussion, roughly what is the most games you've completed in a year? My fiancé and I play a lot of games together, as well as ones I play on the side, so I'm up over 50 for the year!

saibher (cyber)

What is the most enlightening/memorable article that has come out of the Games Journalism space? Something that made you go "what???? No way" or other exclamations.
