IMO, the defining characteristic of great games recently is that they're not afraid to let you go buck wild and have fun. Hades, BOTW, etc. I'm happy that Halo Infinite feels like it's in that same vein, with the grappleshot and repulsor. I could see so many other games intensely restricting them. Also, the rivalry between Master chief and the banished feels like a WWE match.

Wesley Minner

Some of the grunt lines and the pelican pilot's personality were grating on me early game, so I switched to the Japanese dub, and I've been having a much better time. I find it funny that Master Chief can chuck the explodey canister things 37 times farther than a tiny grenade.

Richie Carrasco

I love how Infinite humanizes Master Chief in small simple moments. The way Chief places a hand gently on the shoulders of the dead Spartans makes my overall mission feel more important every time it has happened. And it is more impressive that this is in the game at all, when you consider the developers did not need to include these scenes in order to give Master Chief his additional abilities.

Daniel Boateng

Anyone else notice that Chief has already spoken more in this game than all the other Halo's combined? I definitely feel like I have a better sense of him as a character

Daniel Boateng

Playing on Xbox One S, and this game is running better than I expected. Really thought the open world would slow the game down a lot, but it runs well enough

DarkFishDays

My favorite Grunt line so far: I trained for 3 days for this moment!

Joey

Is master chief being a jerk? Especially to the pilot. Master chief has always been brief but he only seems to be neh-saying everyone around him so far

Jon B

Hi Minn Maxers! I’ve been playing on heroic - which seems to be the sweet spot if you don’t want to breeze through. Are any of you playing on legendary, and if so - how’s that experience been? I can’t imagine taking down some of those depot-base-things without co-op on legendary. Thank you!

Christian Jimenez

Hi Spartans, What do you think of the beginning of the game, specifically the first two levels. Kotaku claims it is awful to start the game in these linear, room after room spaces and shooting galleries. Digital Foundry likes the opening levels saying it brings the classic Halo feeling before letting you loose in the new open world space. I felt it was fine letting us get our bearings straight by these introductory levels or should they have just opened the game straight into the Halo gameplay loop. Happy Holidays!

Jason Grier

How did you feel about the "oblivion sewer" moment of coming out and seeing the light of open world for the first time? I'll never grow tired of those moments in video games.

Hey Deepest Dive Crew! I've always really liked Steve Downes performance as the voice of Master Chief. He knows just when to add in the pathos for a character that clearly keeps anything even resembling emotion hidden away inside for 99% of his life. That said, recently I decided to look up his career, sure that he had a long a fruitful one as a voice actor and, as it turns out, he really hasn't! He's really only ever played Master Chief in all his game appearances (Including Bomberman R), A character called "Gunnar" in a Monolith published RPG called "Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator", and strangely, Marvel's Star Lord in one episode of an Avengers cartoon. I really love his performance, and now I find it even more unique and special due to how closely associated his voice is to almost the only character he's ever done.

Halo Infinite rocks! And by rocks, I'm referring to that jaw dropping terrain texture! Game mountain and rock formation textures usually bug me with how bland, repetitive, and unnatural they look, especially in open world games, but holy halo, I'm looking at a mountain and the rock formations, strata, what have you look completely different than the mountain next to it. I don't know what tech they're using, but I'm impressed!

Shawn Mills

I really liked the design of Atriox in the opening cutscene and I assumed a big plot point in Infinite would be getting revenge on him for leaving Chief in space. I was really surprised that he apparently just died offscreen during the time jump. I assumed he was in Halo 4 or 5 since I never played those but I checked online and it looks like his only appearance was in Halo Wars 2. Is Halo Wars 2 required to understand the lore of Halo now?

Jeorin

Only made it a little way into the game. Right now it just seems like the battle of who can be the best example of toxic masculinity. Master Chief is such a dud character to me. Emotionless. No personality. I can't figure out how I'm supposed to identify with someone who is more or less just a living tool. All this being said, I am looking forward to the open world portion. The shooting feels very tight, and the gameplay is smooth as butter. The grappling hook ripping the shields off those little guys is very satisfying.

Saxoclone

I'm of two minds on the open world right now. I really like how it opens up the approaches you can take to any given encounter depending on what weapons or vehicles you roll up with, especially once you get a handle on the grappleshot. At the same time, I feel like the open world is a bit sterile, with almost nothing between marked points of interest. Sometimes you'll find an audio log or a small weapon cache, but usually going off the beaten path doesn't reward you (like climbing a huge mountain just to find nothing but empty terrain). I find myself wishing either the spaces between POIs had more unmarked, interesting moments happening, or that the map had been condensed to cut down the amount of empty spaces.

MyNameIsDan

Hey friends, How many UNSC soldiers have you killed by calling down a vehicle at a FOB? I'm probably approaching 5? Some even start doing push ups before they get squashed! Thanks, Dan

Fred Dinovo

Howdy all Do you think the Doom Marine has impacted the Chief's character at all?  I think you can see some Doom influence is within the first hour of the game when Master Chief says they'll have to hack some panel when Echo 216 asks him if can Chief just punches the control panel breaking it and says "No". You got id Software in my 343.

Mark Ramirez

No fall damage is a godsend. Grappling atop a mountain and then leaping off is great on top of the great sound design of you picking up velocity. To then land and keep going instead of dying or waiting for shields to recharge is great. This just in: good game!

Erin T.

Is anyone else feeling some Doom 2016 DNA in this game? It still feels like Halo when it wants to, but I’ve been really surprised by how similar the combat pacing feels at times, and how slow the older Halo games feel in comparison. I’m constantly sprinting, swapping out weapons, grappling into enemies to melee them - this game really wants to get you into that “flow state.” It feels AWESOME, and if anything I’m most surprised at how well it works with the Halo formula.

EJ Crough

I feel like the open world fits halo's gameplay really well! Not feeling the new shotgun tho

Luke Strain

Are the banished low-key people eaters? I heard a grunt say "Where are you? I'm angry, hungry and ready to kill!" I also heard a Brute say "Tonight we feast!" After killing me. Are they feasting on Master Chief? I feel like this should have been mentioned in a more official capacity.

Neill Smith

Grappleshot. Grappleshot grappleshot, grappleshot. Grappleshot! Grappleshot grappleshot? Grappleshot.

Empiric Unicorn

The deadliest enemy in the game is the exploding barrel, pretending to be an ally but always ready to strike you in the back.

Divorced Cougar (Mike M)

Simple question, but what do you all think of the open world interpretation for Halo? Personally, I love it so far. Solid Halo gunplay and the existence of regenerating shields and health makes it feel different from most open world games we see nowadays.

Clemens Zobel

Seeing lots of animals on this Halo which helps breathe some life into the environment. Birds in the sky, little armadillo looking critter burrowing into the ground, insects buzzing around. There was a little bird thing on the ground that started to take off when I approached, and to my horror I was able to shoot it and it poofed out of existence. I've only seen small animals so far, but I'm hoping we encounter larger, more dangerous wildlife at some point, something that looks really alien. I hope we get to see more biomes and animals in this game, if not in the main story, then in some DLC. Desert, jungle, underwater levels please.

MickManga

This is my first Halo game. And one thing that really stands out above all other things is the music. It's catchy and I find myself already humming a few different tunes when I am not playing. The last game that happened to me, was Yooka Laylee Impossible Lair, a few years ago. So I tip my hat to the composer and everyone involved in the audio design. You've done what few modern games have for me. I think I will be be humming the soundtrack to Halo Infinite for the rest of my life much like snes or n64 game music. ^__^

Manic_pixel_

“Spartan your way out of that, you dead idiot” is the greatest line of video game dialogue ever written.

Patrick O'Connor

I'm thoroughly enjoying how my titanfall 2 grapple hook muscle memory works in this game too. The amount of air control means you can actually swing yourself around obstacles and use the momentum to propel yourself up or down. I know we all can't shut up about the grapple but by God is it satisfying.

Ampex

The very first shot of the Halo ring in the opening is the same as the final shot of the Legendary ending in Halo 5. It has always bothered me how Halo has handled villains in the recent games. They never survive from one game to the other. The Didact from Halo 4 was killed off in a comic. And Jul M'dama was killed in a few seconds by Fireteam Osiris in the opening mission of Halo 5. And I guess Cortana in a way isn't the villain anymore either. BUT, it makes me happy that Atriox from Halo Wars 2 got a moment to shine in the opening of this game. Because he is one of the stronger Halo villains in my opinion and I'm glad they gave him some time in the spotlight at least. What an awesome first cinematic. First gameplay impressions were that it feels so satisfying to play Halo again. Every combat encounter felt like dance with the new sandbox. It has that familiar classic feel but at the same time it feels like a bigger step forward than ever before. Gorgeous environments and vistas don't disappoint: - The huge area in the Banished ship with the prefab bases getting moved around above you. - The first time you get into Forerunner hallways with the Sentinels flying past you. - And obviously when the gate opens up and you see the ring and the open world for the first time. It's fun to be able to use whatever vehicle you want and equip your marines with any weapon. But sometimes I wish there were simple commands to control the marines. I wish I at least could be able to tell them to stay put or follow. It's annoying sometimes when you wanna grapple over a wall to open a gate and you can't tell your marines to stay in the vehicle while you do that. Because when the gate is open and the fight have already started, it's pretty much impossible to get them back in again. What is up with the weird motion sensor size? 59 meters? I felt like it was too big and it was hard to determine how far away from me enemies actually were. Especially when you're used to the older ones. (I read the part about having the comment be about the length of a tweet after I posted this, so I guess these are multiple tweets...)

Jeffrey Cloutier

I never knew I wanted to play “Farcry:Halo Infinite” before, but I’m glad I did. Terrain is amazing; having the ring be broken was a brilliant idea. Grappleshot makes the movement easy. With the variety of weapons and vehicles, it makes sense to do an open world game. Best Farcry game since Farcry 4 :) I was a little worried at first, shield upgrade in a Halo game? The upgrades are impactful and useful. Would you kindly pick up these audio logs? While I mostly don’t pay much attention to what is said on them, I like how there are multiple types (Banished, Spartan, etc.) Freeing the marines was very rewarding when some of them went on my mission to assault the tower. It was then I realized that they were not the crappy marines from Halo 1, these marines used cover and actually fairly proficient in killing Banished. The only sad part for me was the nerfing of my beloved needler. Takes 2 full clips to take down an elite. :(

Jordan Holmdahl

I've never loved the needler, but for the first time I had a satisfying moment with that dopey gun. The third boss fight against the hammer wielding brute, Bassus, was a challenge for me and on my 6th or 7th attempt I'd run out of ammo for my weapons with only a needler in sight. As Bassus charged to kill me once again, I emptied a full clip of needles into him and at the last second they exploded, killing the Brute and sending him cartwheeling into the wall. I guess I'm a fan of the needler now.

jedijames2

So...does Master Chief not realize there’s no fall damage in this game? After the monitor boss fight he makes a point of calling the pilot for an extraction, then skydives into the Pelican. Just prior to the mission I had climbed the highest nearby mountain and jumped off it, because how cool is that...so the extraction moment at the end of the mission really made me do a double take. Still an awesome campaign though.

Dunder

Hey Ben and Fireteam Cohort, I have really enjoyed finding the crashed escape pods which are so reminiscent of the second level from the original Halo game. You almost always find something interesting like a power weapon, audio log, Spartan core, or cosmetic armor locker. The influence of Halo Combat Evolved runs deep through the opening section of the game and I love to see it.

Sandshrewd

I'm kind of disappointed on how they handled Cortana and Atriox. Cortana, who has been a main character in every mainline game, gets killed in-between Halo 5 and Infinite, and they barely mention it? Then Atriox, who they built up in Halo Wars 2 to be this unstoppable force, kicks Master Chief's ass in the opening cutscene (gave me Hulk vs Thanos vibes), and then he just...dies? Honestly, what was the point of replacing Atriox with Escharum? I'm hoping they're not dead and something is going to pay off down the line, but who knows. And why do they want to fire the rings? They know what they do now, right? The Covenant wanting to fire them was believable because they thought it was going to take them to their version of Heaven, but why does Escharum want to kill all life in the galaxy?

Colton Westbrooks

Hello everyone, I really enjoyed The Conservatory level. I thought it had good tension and vibe. This level also represents how well Halo Infinite has harkened back to the original trilogy. The design of the Forerunner architecture in this level in particular is so spot on to the original Halo, and it made me so happy to see. Shout out to the inclusion of the lit up arrows on the floors to tell you what direction to take. That little detail brought it all together.

bizkiut (Nick S.)

What's your favorite gun so far? Are they different for single player and multiplayer? My favorite for both is by far the Mangler. That melee feels so good, and if you didn't know, in multiplayer, it is a two hit kill. A shot and melee in any order will bring another spartan down.

Brian W

The open world aspect allowed me to bond with a marine more than normal. I had one rocket left so I gave it to the sole marine that survived my rescue. We palled around in a warthog and the ai was smart enough to take the passenger seat to use the rocket instead of the turret. We wrecked! When the hog finally blew the marine didn’t escape the blast radius. I found the rockets on the ground, one last gift from my fallen friend. It was fully stocked with ammo. I’ll miss you rocket marine!

Devin Cheek

I've been with Halo since the beginning and this doesn't disappoint. I'm getting halo 1 vibes constantly. I'm exploring like crazy and one of my favorite finds so far is the "Craig World Tour" Poster on top of the Tower near the start of the game! I love how self aware 343 is. Do you have any favorite "finds" so far? Thanks Minnmaxers!

Charles Carroll

While I have minor complaints about the overall lore and world of Halo, especially following up Halo 5, I have to say my roughly 17 hours on Zeta Halo were a great time. At times it's a better Spider-Man game than Insomniac's Spider-Man with the grapple hook. I can't imagine how much worse the experience would have been without that. Looking forward to the discussion.

t00thr0t

I love all the little satisfying touches in the game. The sound that plays when you find an audio log is so gratifying, makes me listen carefully for those ping noises. Also the “X” that appears when you kill an enemy! I daydream about that X, it makes me happy~~

Nick West

My question is: What was your personal breaking point in terms of Halo lore and capitalized nouns? I think mine was The Didact in Halo 4. As much as I was actually kind of rolling with the narrative in Infinite, a character named The Harbinger showing up just reminded me of all the parts of the story that I find grating.

Donnie

So I was very happy to get the same satisfaction from gameplay as I did with the first Halo in my childhood. I thought the open world would just feel like a big halo level which would’ve been fine with this great gameplay. But what I’ve realized is that getting to explore, choose what I do next, and the little secrets I come across make it feel like Halo’s version of Fallout or Outer Worlds. And that makes me love it so much more

Donnie

Also, does anyone else thing the Banished have better mood lighting than most twitch streamers?

RiskyChrisP

I don’t have the nostalgia many people do for the series. How much of an impact would you say that’s had on each of your experiences with Infinite so far? I personally think it’s a solid game from a mechanical standpoint, but I find Fernando to be kind of annoying and Atriox to be the biggest caricature of a villain in recent memory, so from a narrative standpoint I’m not really feeling motivated to push through the story.

BeatenDownBrian

I'm just curious how has everyone been traversing the map? Surprisingly, I've found myself on foot 95% of the time. I'm just having so much fun finding little secrets that aren't marked on the map, that it feels I would be blowing by all that stuff if I chose to travel by vehicle.

Derin

First, The grapple hook really is a game changer for changing up enemy gunfights for the series. Second, I like how talkative the grunts are in this game, they have a lot more unique dialogue this time around it seems compared to their usual screaming and running. A grunt had the finishing blow on me at one point and he was in disbelief that he was the one to kill the Master Chief. They even trash talk too.

Juan Cabrera

Happy Holidays Minnmax! You can definitely see the bethesda influence in this games introduction to Zeta Halo, going from dark interior to that blinding glow of the open world 👌

Zach E

My new favorite weapon is... The throwable fusion cores! It feels so good to nail a brute in the forehead with them, and they've saved my butt on multiple occasions.

Dylan Kelly

As someone who has been playing since I was probably like 6 or 7, this game feels great and carries on a long legacy. This is the first time I've ever started one of the Halo campaigns on Legendary and let me say it's been kicking my ass. Really pushing me to use all the abilities and keep moving at all times. I fear nothing more than a grunt with a plasma grenade.

ChazCheeto

Not sure if I'm too late here, but just dropped in (first time commenting on a Deepest Dive!) to say that the sound and feel of the base assault rifle is awful. It feels like I'm shooting pellets, both in terms of the audio and the impact it seems to have on even the basic grunts.
