Double fine presents: Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland 2?

Last week me and my friends had a Shrek themed game day called "Shrekuary" where we played a bunch of Shrek games. This got me wondering, what would you all consider the worst games you've ever beaten and why did you stick with it?

SenttheProphet

My worry is that game pass, long term, decreases quality of games and incentivizes time inflated games with micro transactions. With publishers no longer earning money at the sale of the game (except from the agreement with Microsoft), seeing future revenue will heavily rely on micro transactions. As well as inflating the time it takes to play the game, grinding elements etc, to have high percentage retention numbers for Microsoft. I see PlayStation maybe heading in a different direction, with offering titles at a cost, but providing a tighter experience, less micro transactions and a focus on the “art” of games. As an example, Outriders quality versus God of War Do you all see this duality? Similar to how many Netflix Originals aren’t rated that great, will the same fate be for game pass? More of a “popcorn” game offer? Will PlayStation hold true to their characters of games, or will they have to sway more towards a similar offering with their upcoming new revamp(Spartacus)

What is the maximum price that the average gamer would pay for game pass? Now that Activision Blizzard games are gonna be on the platform, prices are surely going to increase

Resident Evil 8 has such an amazing world, it's hard to imagine how they'd top it with Resident Evil 9... Any guesses? I'd love for it to take place in a 1970's summer camp. If RE7 was an homage to Texas Chainsaw Massacre, this could be Capcom's take on Friday the 13th.

Hey Cohorts - How do you feel your parents shaped your gaming habits? I have a daughter about to turn 1 and I'm starting to think about how to introduce her to games and what rules to put in place when she gets older. I appreciate how my parents handled it: they restricted how much and what I could play but also encouraged what I enjoyed. Thanks! Mothstache

When you're alone, how often do you laugh out loud at funny content? I find it extremely rare to laugh out loud by myself, I usually just let out a lame "heh". But the same joke with friends or family could have me dying. So, what's the last game that actually made you audibly laugh out loud while playing alone?

Tyler Sticka

Hello there, cohorts! In an unsuccessful effort to quiet my personal hype for Kirby and the Forgotten Land, I finally got around to playing Return to Dream Land for the Wii... but I could only play for an hour or so because the Wii remote's sharp, tiny d-pad kept digging into the pad of my thumb (he game oddly supports no other control schemes). Are there any games you've stuck with even though they physically hurt to play?

Manic_pixel_

How do you guys think the person in charge of announcing project Spartacus took today news?

Garrett Hulfish

With all the love for tomatoes in Tomato Adventure, how do you feel about tomatoes and why do you love/hate them? Feel free to include your favorite tomato dish.

Nuff with these softball questions - answer this you cowards…. What did you get Janet for her birthday? Gus

Hello Cohorts and welcome back Kelsey Lewin! Have you ever taken a break from a game you found difficult, only to come back later to great success? I dropped off Returnal last year after enjoying it but struggling to progress in the third biome. The other day I picked it back up, and not only did I clear the third biome on my first attempt, but I beat the rest of the game. What are your success stories? Thanks, Nick from Atlanta

If Nintendo did finally make a new game in the Earthbound series what would you guys want from a modern take on it? Who would make it? What would you change? Would the game still spoof American culture? Personally, I think the combat system could use a little bit of an overhaul.

Hey CLCs and Kelsey, My friends and I have been watching a movie over discord on Mondays and Wednesdays, and each month has been having a theme so far and one of us curates it. This month has been Jackie Chan-uary where we watch Jackie Chan movies. What's your favorite Jackie movie? (So far, I think mine is Rumble in the Bronx) Nick S.

After hearing about Microsoft acquisition for 70 billion dollars, I decided to do some research into how much it cost to develop video games. It was hard to find some concrete numbers, but these numbers should be in the right ballpark. I want to see if the cohorts can guess how many titles you can develop with each of these games budgets. Red Dead Redemption - 700 titles (The budget was estimated around 100 mil) Cyberpunk 2077 - 212 titles (The budget was estimated around 330 mil) GTA 5 - 264 titles (The budget was estimated around 265 mil) Shovel Knight - 48611 titles (The budget was estimated around 1.44 mil) The point I am trying to make is that instead of buying a company with a very public history of employee harassment, Microsoft could have supported a multitude of studios and projects. https://www.thegamer.com/most-expensive-games-ever-made/ https://blackbeltgamer.com/the-full-costs-of-making-an-indie-video-game-broken-down/ https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2014-08-06-shovel-knight-devs-break-down-costs-sales

So, is anyone else depressed by the Microsoft buying Activison news? Am I wrong to assume that Microsoft just threw a lifeline to a company that has thrived on toxic workplace culture with billions of dollars? I mean, is that all it takes now to get away with whatever you want? Be affordable to a bigger company? Kotick is gonna get a nice big pay out now. This feels gross.

Noah D.

Hi Everyone! With the Activision Blizzard acquisition by microsoft, do you see the release schedule for COD changing as to not conflict with other titles, such as Halo? Previously, in the 360 era, Microsoft alternated years between Halo and Gears of War. Do you see this being a possibility for the COD franchise? It would certainly make future call of duty games more evolved experiences.

Good day! I recently looked up the Super Mario main series sales and you will not believe the results! Here are a few pairs of Mario games, guess which sold more units on the original system they came out on (units are in millions of sales): Super Mario Bros. (NES) or New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii) – 40.2 and 30.3 New Super Mario Bros. U (Wii U) or Super Mario Sunshine (GCN) – 5.8 and 6.3 Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) or Super Mario Land (GB) – 17.3 and 18.1 New Super Mario Bros. 2 (DS) or Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) – 13.4 and 12.8 Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii) or Super Mario Bros. 2 (not lost levels) (NES) – 7.4 and 7.5 Super Mario Odyssey (NSW) or Super Mario World – 22.0 and 20.6

What’s the closest thing in real life to actual magic?

*sink*you sheath your blade and let out a hearty sigh of relief. it's over. For now. You wipe a combination of blood and sweat from your brow and sit back , exhausted. Utterly drained, You ask yourself how it has come to this? You never thought you could fight so hard. You never understood the passion that war necessitates. The pride. The victory. The defeat. All in all, you've officially completed the 2 tens. So how does it feel? After the holiday break do you have any regrets? Any games you wish you had fought harder for? Any games that you realize you were too cracked up about?

Thomas Wilson

Do you think Microsoft as a Game Studio is baring fruit with all these acquisitions over the years? Bonus Question: When/will Gamepass launch of PS5?

Christian Jimenez

Hello, What are your skin care routines? I can never not be amazed by how great and porcelain looking Sarah's skin looks. Are you ever self-conscious about being on camera when you don't feel like you are having a good skin day? Thanks! Wear sunblock.

Hi MinnMax, What are some of your favorite game menu music? Persona 4, Panzer Dragoon and Jet Grind Radio's start menu music are up there for me. And I stayed on Dark Souls' character creation for a long time just soaking in the vibes.

CrabPalace

In the 2009 demonstration of Project Milo, a Peter Molyneux tech demo for the Kinect, a human woman has a conversation with Milo, an NPC. By actually speaking to it. This demo is in my opinion the biggest lie in the whole of gaming, it is absolutely insane. However, as a naive teenager at the time I believed it. Although it was preposterous then, how long do you think it will be until we see a game where you can actually have a conversation with an NPC? And what else is not mentioned often when we talk about the future of gaming?

Obstacle Running Adventures

I remember you guys talking about the games that you beat last year and how Ben tracks everything that he plays which made me think of this question: I have an insane backlog that I am trying to get through. To play catch up I was able to beat 122 games in 2021! (NES 2, SNES 13, PS3 3, 3DS 1, Switch 66, PS4 18, PSP 19). My question is, did I beat more games than the entire MinnMax crew combined last year? As a fellow podcast host I appreciate the show, keep up the great work! MStefano from Massachusetts! PS: I could've attached my spreadsheet that has tracked every game that I have played and beaten in my entire life (yeah, I've got some OCD)

Harrison Holt

Hey MinnMax, I just got done watching the AGDQ Sekiro Shadows Die Twice Blindfolded run. It's an absolutely incredible run, showcasing an impressive knowledge of the game, both in regards to exploits and to the fundamental mechanics. It reminded me of a time when I was younger and I would spend a lot of my gaming time imposing restrictions or challenging myself in games that just didn't require it. For instance, I took great delight in scoring with the goalkeeper when playing FIFA, or letting myself get lapped once in Crash Team Racing only to claw back the win. Do any of the panel have any fond memories of doing something like this, or perhaps they've played something recently where a bit of a self-imposed rule might be a fun way to spend an evening or two? Cheers, Harrison

Tey Peryie

Hello MinnMax + Kelsey! What’s the next retro console you want to get the Analogue pocket treatment?

Brian Corliss

Hello to the Cohort Crew: What is a game you've sat and played from start to finish in one go or one day? Was your experience with it heightened or lessened after doing so?

Eric Reitz

Hey MinnMaxers, Ten years from now, will we look back at Microsoft's devouring of major publishers as a good or bad shift for the video game industry? Happy Gaming, Eric

Donnie

Hi friends! On a scale from 1 to Oh God Why, how concerned are you with the monopolization of the games industry?

Fizz

Good day cohorts, Add this to the list of Xbox and activision/blizzard questions. Do we feel like this is monopolizing and hoarding or just the logical next step in Phil Spencer’s goal of getting as many games to as many people as possible? Will this acquisition allow the smaller studios under the ActiBlizz umbrella to stop being COD support studios and get back to working on literally anything else? Is the fear of finding an audience no longer an issue for any of these developers with the discovery engine that is Game Pass? I’m of two minds about the whole thing, unchecked capitalism = gross BUT, wildly talented artists and developers taking advantage of Microsoft money and being seen by 25 million game pass users = amazing. All the best, Fizz.

Alexander Mills

G'day Cohorts! Im hearing a lot of concern about monopolisation of the games industry online but when I ask friends which platform they'd rather game on... its an even split! Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard is a huge purchase but in terms of impact, it isn't going to detract from the brilliant first party titles of Sony or Nintendo. Having more reasons to buy an Xbox in addition to a PlayStation or Switch is not a reduction of competition but rather a healthy escalation. Speaking of healthy, if Microsoft put the people of ActiBlizz first and reduce toxicity in the work environment its hard to argue that isn't a net positive. I guess my question is whether folks are overreacting? The Activision Blizzard games that we love will still be available on PC, Xbox and Cloud and the work environment should improve. Heck, maybe Toys for Bob will be released from Call of Duty development support prison too. Hardly sounds apocalyptic to me. Is this deal enough for you to stop gaming on PlayStation or Nintendo?

Victor Pham

How long should someone wait before contributing to the discourse on Twitter?

TommenDotGif

Hi everyone. When you start a new game, do you name your character after yourself or do you give them a new name? Do you have a go to?

Shimmy Neutron

Another 2fer, btw Hanson this isn't a ploy to get both questions read I just have alot of thoughts. Konnichiwa mins and misses. #1 Despite being loosely related, the terms greatest, best, favorite, have different meanings. It would be nice to hear you all discuss the meaning of each word and assign a game to each in your view. #2 I love music and I'd love to hear your top 3 game title tone setting songs. Not just a good song or a song you really like, but the song that sets the best "tone" for the game about to be played. For me it's #3 skyrim dovakin, #2 FF's prelude, Dark souls 3, fun fact, that title song is called Dark souls 3 😁. Thanks for the laughs fellow nerds

Richie Carrasco

What does it mean to “play” a game in the 2020s? I was thinking about this because I know a lot of people in their 20s who are very selective about the games they buy because we are broke, and instead use Youtube or Twitch. In my case: I have seen a full let’s play of Telltale’s The Walking Dead video game, and I tell people that I have played that game. Am I wrong for saying that?

Ian Switaj

Hello MinnMax crew! Given Ben's recent obsession with Tomato Adventure and Sarah proclaiming that she regrets "missing the boat" to play Nier Automata when it first came out, what is something -- whether that be a hidden gem or something that was insanely popular -- that you missed out on the first go around and regretted not knowing/playing/seeing/doing it sooner?

Phil McKrackup

Hey Minnmax! I like to think I’m pretty good at air hockey. I don’t lose often when I play people at an arcade. What’s an arcade game that you are good at? And what’s your favorite memories at an arcade?

Hugo Aguilar

Hey Minnmax cohorts, I’m sure Chrono Cross had a lovely soundtrack but for me it was Tool’s Lateralus album. I played that album on repeat for the entire game. So is there an album you associate a game with?

MouseRat

I get social anxiety especially when meeting new people. Do you have any good conversation starters for when you meet someone new?

CptCobblePot

Hey Minnmaxers and friend Kelsey! Everyone’s talking about the big Xbox news! It begs the question on a lot of peoples minds, what does Sonys next move look like? Does it mean more acquisitions for them, porting everything to PC, or just keep making damn good IPs? Curious on your thoughts!

PhillyYeetSteak

Hey Minnmax, and welcome Kelsey! Do you think there is a specific genre of games that is most responsible for getting people into games? Also has this changed over time?

Styster

Hey MinnMaxers! Is there some video game news you'll always remember where you were when you heard it? Either because it was big news, or because you were somewhere significant when you learned it?

Sean Mason

Hey CLCs, Since Xbox now owns the Crash and Spyro IP, do you think we could see a new Crash or Spyro game in our future? If so, would you want Toys For Bob to work on them, or prefer another team under the Xbox umbrella? Given the critical praise Crash 4 received, I hope Toys For Bob gets another shot. Best, Sean M.

bertincognito

Is it time for us to stop mentally pairing Sony and Microsoft as competitors and begin viewing Sony more along the lines of a Nintendo (a rich IP holder but not a multitrillion dollar software company with all the motivation in the world to swallow up the gaming industry)? Was that ever even fair? (Even if Sony did "win" a couple of the past generations) And how long before we get an Amazon Playstation? (also... First time long time! Thanks for the opportunity to mini-ramble.)

Kris N

Hey Minnmaxers! With so many games and such little time, it can sometimes be hard to even complete the main story of a game. That being said, what was the last game you went the extra mile to 100% complete or go for all the achievements / trophies? What drove you to keep going?

Ethan Poe

Hey Minnmaxers! I think an underdiscussed element of this acquisition is both Microsoft and Activisions incredibly deep ties to the Defense Industry. Do you worry that these deep relationships has the potential to limit the possible themes and storytelling that can be expressed under the Gamespass umbrella?

Rigoberto Hernandez

Please, I beg you Minnmax, don't talk about this Microsoft/Activision acquisition like corporate cheerleaders. Don't be like KFG and IGN If video game media companies loath the console war mentalities why do they talk about video games like sports? who won this generation? who won E3? Aren't they are the ones encouraging this kind of tribalism with their framing of news?

Jeffrey Brown

Why do you think there is so much dialog about this merger potentially not going through due to anti-trust issues? This acquisition still has MS behind Sony in terms of “Gaming” revenue once complete. I can’t imagine regulators viewing this as anything more than a competitor getting stronger in the market and improving competition.
