With the Super Bowl Commercial show coming up, what video games do you want to see have a 15 second spot on the big stage? What direction do you want the commercial to go, funny, serious, meta colab with Arbys?? Will Xbox have a Game Pass commercial during the big game?

Stephen Woodson

Welcome O'Dell and Nikole! As far as I can tell, neither Sony, Microsoft, or even the all-consuming Embracer Group has ever acquired a Japanese video game studio. Why do you think that is?

John Lee

Greetings! If you could have any book made into a (good) game, what book would you choose, what genre would the game be, and who would you pick as developer?

Brian Ventura

Hey MinnMax Recently, Dying Light 2's official Twitter account boasted a 500 hour playtime to fully complete the game. Generally speaking, do you think most gamers are convinced more hours = more content = more value? Do you think gamers largely respect their own time? Or are we all volunteering to line up and eat the slop that these companies put on our plate? I say that cynically, but I'm actually pretty excited for dying light 2 👀 - Brian

When I was young my parents wouldn't let me play "Mature" games, and I used to think a lot about ratings. Now that I have my own kids I'm starting to think about ratings again...made me wonder: if you could only play games of one rating what would you go with? E (almost no Sony Exclusives), T (little of everything), M (no Mario or racing).

gybones

Hey everybody, do you think videos games is the most flexible medium? As in books/movies/music can be games basically, but you can’t work a video game to be a book. Like the iconic Nintendo DS game “100 Classic Book Collection” for example. Or consider a CD player game with “Play”, “Stop”, “Skip” being mapped to the controls for playing music.

Austin Brackeen

What is the best Pokémon? (it's Squirtle)

Curtis Puryear

Am I the only gamer that kind of likes the idea of digital ownership/NFTs in games? Everyone I know enjoys having stuff around their house, car, office desk etc that is unique to them and shows off who they are. If I’m spending more time hanging out in digital spaces, why wouldn’t I also want that stuff there? I don’t understand why the latter evokes so much more outrage. Is it because of how the latter might be sold (e.g., lootboxes)? What am I missing here?

DarkFishDays

Hi all! What type of in-game collectible encourages you to explore? Something purely aesthetic, non-essential powerups and equipment, or narrative details like diaries?

Jason Wojnar

Why do we have lower standards for movies based on video games/Comic Books versus video games based on movies/comic books? People seem to be okay and even content with movies like Detective Pikachu and Tomb Raider which, quite frankly, were dumpster fires and two of the worst movies I've seen in a theater in the last 5 years. Uncharted is probably going to have a similar reception, though I will withhold judgment until I see it. Now look at video games. We are not happy with a 6/10. All the notable games based on movies are not only good, they pushed their genre forward (GoldenEye, 2018 Spider-Man, Arkham Asylum). South Park also had plenty of games that were rightfully ridiculed until the Stick of Truth did the series justice. Mediocre adaptations are quickly forgotten and bad ones are treated as bad games should be. In conclusion, we shouldn't set the bar so low for video game movies. On the contrary, we should be demanding as audiences and not be happy until we have an adaptation as good as all-time classics like Apocalypse Now, The Cranes are Flying, or Star Wars. From Kyiv With Love, Jason Wojnar

i wanna hate the metaverse, but it's seeming more and more inevitable every day. are ya'll excited by the idea of a virtual MinnMax hub? the discord is basically a proto version of that. does it sound exciting to you that down the road the minnmax show could be a virtual show with patreon people literally hanging out in a virtual backstage? or does that sound terrible and you'd want to keep minnmax working how it does today forever?

RickyWinterborn

do you think nintendo is due for another wii u esque dark era? it feels like the companies entire future is just BTOW2 at this point...

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and friennds, What actor takes you the longest to "adjust to" when they aren't in the role you know them from? I love seeing Jonathan Groff things like the Matrix and Mindhunters but I takes me awhile to unsee King George from Hamilton.

Ben Shively

With all the acquisitions going on in the game industry, when is a better time to speculate on who will be purchased next? Out of these companies, which do you believe will be acquired, by who, and for how much? Konami Ubisoft Square Enix CD Projekt Red Capcom FromSoftware Take-Two EA Gearbox

Grizzled Gaming

Hey gang! I once made a belt out of watches. It was a real waist of time. What’s everyone's favorite dad joke?

The Sleepy MailMan

Hello Ben and friends! People often use Nintendo as an adjective. For example: “It’s very Nintendo of them”. How would you define Nintendo as an adjective, and by that definition, what’s the most Nintendo thing ANY game company’s done?

Ryan Jones

If you had to live or exist in a game, what game would it be? Further, if you could not choose a “happy” game like Stardew Valley, what horror or “dark” game would you choose?

Kenneth Evans

Hello MinnMax Crew, is it possible that Breath of the Wild is overrated? (Cue the gasping sounds). I think it’s a good, even great game, but I just can’t get behind “the greatest game of all time” claims. The breaking weapons, empty open world, and ho hum graphics/color palate kept me from seeing this as more than an 8/10. Can anyone rise to its defense and help me see what I’m missing?

Mitch

In recent gaming history we’ve gotten an open world Zelda, Halo, and Pokémon game. Why do you think the natural end point for a lot of long-established franchises tends toward open world?

It's Hugo's Nook

Hey there Creature Catching Cohorts! With all of the big acquisitions lately I'm curious if there are any studios you'd like to see split from their parent companies? (Example Bungie leaving Activision).

G-Max Thoeren

Did y'all see the announcement of Yacht Club's new game? It's a fusion of Link's Awakening and Castlevania in a game boy style that looks great! But for some reason, they're doing a Kickstarter for it. Yacht Club is publishing games from other developers at this point - why do they need a Kickstarter?

Tey Peryie

Hello gang. What classic work of literature would make the best game adaptation and why? For bonus points pitch who would make it!

Jeorin

Hello MinnMax and Friends, I am playing Arceus for the Deepest Dive. It's my first real Pokémon game, having only played Unite before. Apparently I caught a shiny, but it just looks slightly different and doesn't do anything special. People go wild over these things, but I don't understand why. So Pokémaniacs, what's the big deal with shinies?

Joe Dean

Hey Minnesota-Maxesota, Wordle was recently purchased by the New York Times and it really helped solidify a thought I've had since I started playing Wordle earlier this year: I think Wordle might be the best "newspaper" game ever. Obviously Wordle can't be played in a newspaper, but it's premise and execution is so simple yet satisfying like a crossword or one of its contemporaries (word search, sudoku or a word jumble.) What do you think makes Wordle so successful, and where do you think it would rank in relation to other "newspaper" games? What is your favorite? Thank you, Joe Dean

BobaFets

Hi MinnMax, with the chip shortage continuing through 2022 and the news that Sony will continue to make PS4,s do you think this means that we will not see any “pro” versions of the consoles this generation?

Christian Jimenez

Hello, Now that GOTY awards are all done with looks like 2021 was a very divided year. For reference here are the winners from various outlets: IGN: Forza Horizon 5 Kinda Funny: Ratchet and Clank GameInformer: Halo Infinite Easy Allies: Returnal Polygon: Inscryption MinnMax: Chichory Do you think 2022 will be another divided year or would any of the big heavyweights take all the glory? (Elden Ring, Horizon, God of War Ragnarok, BOTW2) Thanks.

Taylor

Hey gang, Is there any game you fell off of because of the gameplay but really liked the story? I loved hellblades story and concept but I really disliked the overall gameplay.

Kyle Silva

I’m watching the New York Game Awards and they have some awards categories that you don’t see all too often, including “Best Remake” and “Best Video Game World.” Makes me wonder, are there any game award categories that you think need to be recognized more in the industry?

Toby King

Hey goobas hope you are well. Here’s a layup. What’s your favorite moogle? Is it the classic red nose red pom moogles in FFVI? Is it the cheeky polygonal moogles like in the game-within-a-game Mog House in the gold saucer of FFVII? The super controversial rabbity moogles of Ivalice? Or the chubby cherubic rosy cheeked English roses that appear briefly in the XIII games?

David Sobiegraj

Hey gang! What is your favorite fast food restaurant? -David S.

Hello Poké Fans! Pokémon Legends Arceus is the latest game to treat the player like an absolute newcomer, with approximately 10 years of tutorials. Do you think these should continue, or should Game Freak change their approach? I tend to think that while Game Freak needs to design so that a child could pick up the game and be fine, they maybe aren't giving enough credit to even the youngest players that might pick their games up. Thanks, Nick from Atlanta

Matthew Weatherley

G'day Minnmaxeroos. The new pokemon game has been coping alot of heat regarding its graphics, (Rightfully so). However one area where I think Gamefreak nailed it was the sky boxes. I can't believe how beautiful and artistic they look. Do you guys agree. And also what is the best sky box you can remember and why. Thanks.

Collector//Emitter

Hey MinnMax, have you ever dreamt of games or parts of games? For me it always happens when I'm hooked on a puzzle game, I start to dream about the mechanics. Most often for me it's with Wario's Woods, which I spent years playing almost every night, and of course it happens with Tetris, and recently Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon

YARF

I am going to Hawaii from CA on Thursday morning for pleasure, with friends and wife. I have only ever been on short flights for business. What do you recommend on longer flights for activities and novel things to do? Any cool flight stories? Should I harass passengers? I have a fear of being consumed by sharks, and oceanic leviathans in general(just played subnautica). What would you do if your plane went down over the ocean? Any survival tips? I could be listening to this podcast on the flight over I guess???….

PhillyYeetSteak

Hello minnmax! I realize it may be wishful thinking, but if you could pick any game you finished in 2021 to replay what would it be and why? Looking forward to the new Minnmax shows!

Garrett Hulfish

What's your most vivid memory of playing games with childhood friends?

AnAttackCorgi

Hello MinnMaxers! I'm an Intern Architect, and one term I recently learned is Liminal Space or "spaces that feel slightly unsettling but are also very familiar to us - an empty mall or an empty parking lot at 4 am or a school hallway during summer." Do you remember Liminal Spaces in gaming? Or maybe at a convention or even at work? For me, a lot of Portal / Half Life office buildings are Liminal. They're very familiar, but make me uneasy since everything looks dystopic and sickly.

ddobry

Hey everyone! Do any of you think you have a real killer game idea that you wish you could pitch? As a bonus, what studio would you ideally pitch it too? Mine is a Witcher 3 style game, but instead of being based on Polish mythology, it’s set in the U.S. and all the monsters are based on American folklore and cryptids like Bigfoot and moth man! Love the pod, keep up the good work!

MickManga

Hope everyone day is going well. I could use some help. I have begun to think that Mario Rpg, Tetris Attack, Goof Troop, Godzilla Snes to name a few are never coming to a handheld system. They missed the New 3ds and it's been years and none are on switch. So my question is what is all your thoughts on a Supaboy? I heard a few mixed things and would like to know all your thoughts on it. Thanks so much and keep being awesome.

Nick Beattie

Hey Ben and Cohorts! I think it’s about time we settled an age-old question: Who are the greatest video game composers of all time? But rather than simply debating about it, I thought it might be more fun to rank them on a totally not-objective, not-definitive top 10 list. I’m going to give you guys a list of video game composers and the games/series/franchises that they’re most known for composing, and y’all gotta rank them. - Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Xenogears) - Koji Kondo (Super Mario series, The Legend of Zelda series) - David Wise (Donkey Kong Country, Diddy Kong Racing, Battletoads) - Yoko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts series, Mario & Luigi series, Final Fantasy XV) - Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy I-XI) - Grant Kirkhope (Banjo-Kazooie series, Donkey Kong 64, Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark) - Jeremy Soule (Skyrim, Star Wars: KOTOR) - Michiru Yamane (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night) - Shoji Meguro (Shin Megami Tensei series, Persona series) - Martin O’Donnell (Halo: CE - Halo: Reach) If you have any objections or have someone you think belongs on this list, feel free to make any adjustments. Thanks!

Bob Buel

Howdy Cohorts and the dancin’ Hansons. What are your best experiences with non-gamers loving video games? Like my mom for example, I don’t think she’s ever looked at a controller or arcade cabinet in her life…. EXCEPT she got super into the puzzle game Columns when I had a Sega Genesis as a kid. Something about the relaxing melodic music and the slow paced gameplay really stuck with her and she’d play that all the time. Do you have any memories of people who absolutely don’t play games falling in love with one? Thanks Bob

Daniel Bishop

When it comes to games with a competitive element, what's most important to you? Winning at all costs? Learning and improving? Just having a fun time? Also, which MinnMax cohort/friend of the show is the most competitive when it comes to games?

Hey guys! I redeemed myself for my December BetterQuest goal to spend more time with the kids in my family! I visited my nephews 2 weeks in a row last month. I taught them how to play a board game called Sushi Go and then they showed me the world they built in Minecraft creative mode. I’m so surprised by how creative these kids are! Kinda makes me wish I had Minecraft as a kid cuz it’s like having an infinite amount of legos. My goal for February is to take a break from Instagram and Reddit for a month. Wish me luck!! 😣 And good luck on your goals too!!

Hi Ben and the Gang, Let’s play everyone’s favorite game, say it together now, “Gamer Monkey’s Paw!”’ You find Donkey Kong’s severed hand lying on the ground, and naturally pick it up. The spirit of Cranky Kong then appears before you and says: “You MUST make ONE gamer wish, but be careful, each wish comes with a curse! Pick one of these five wishes:” 1. You have Mario’s Fire Flower, but for the rest of your life you must introduce yourself by saying: “It’s-a me, a-Ben Hanson!” in your best Charles Martinet voice. 2. You can run as fast as Sonic, but you can only eat chili dogs. Chili dogs are healthy for you for some reason, so you won’t die of a heart attack. 3. You have Colt Vaughn’s “Shift” (“Blink”) ability, but every morning you wake up with a really bad hangover. 4. You are as strong as Kratos, but every once in a while, a stranger knocks on your door and wants to fight you. 5. You have Master Chief’s Mjolnir armor, but you have no friends except an AI that’s constantly bothering you. Which one of these wishes/curses do you choose to spend the rest of your life with? Choose Wisely, Dan Villone

Something that I have always thought about is the story behind Too Human. Of course Dennis Dyak is infamous in the developer world but I always wonder just how much impact a director can have on their game considering the amount of input that is required of the team. I think in any line of work there's always some sort of fall-guy and it always seems like the leader is essentially the person who can handle the most criticism. The question really is what do you think makes a good game director versus a bad one and how that might play a role in not only the success of a video game but it's critical success as well?

Since Bungie just got bought by Sony and Destiny is a franchise in which I have spent approximately 5000 hrs, I decided to ask a gun question. What is the favourite gun you have looted/used in a game and why? My favourite gun to loot was Year 1 Gjallarhorn (which I got in year 3 whilst dead at Atheon in VoG). My favourite gun to use, however, is the rocket launcher from Unreal Tournament 99 because it was such a versatile weapon. It felt chonky but responsive and had a secondary firing mode where you accumulated multiple rockets and shot them out in volley. I played a ton of hours of CTF-Face with low gravity and rockets only. Oh the fun we had without loot, battle passes, microtransactions or xp grind! Cheers from Toronto Canada R0CK3T5YNT5T aka Keith(Rocket Scientist)

With recent acquisitions, do you think Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft have further shown the differences between them? I see them as three fundamentally different companies that have video games as their overlap. Microsoft is a software and services Company, Sony is a hardware and entertainment company, and Nintendo is toy company. I think it's why Nintendo refuses to take a loss on a console (or anything), Sony pushes hard for narrative content and electronics-fidelity, and Microsoft acquires whatever makes them a more robust software service provider. Agree?
