Unspoken great game: CrossCode. Beautiful SNES-like graphics, fun real time elemental combat, unique parkour exploration, great puzzle dungeons. It feels so well crafted yet I never hear people talk about it.

There were some games that came to mind, like Einhander, but then Kingdom Hearts 3 brought it back to the public consciousness a bit with their Gummi Ship boss. So instead, GOAT that no one talks about: Mischief Makers on N64. Goofy anime action with some very cool later game bosses, and a secret ending that you have to collect all of the secret "Gold Gems" to unlock, BUT would gradually unlock an additional second of the footage for each gem you had collected. Also unique combat mechanics in that you could only throw and "Shake-Shake" your enemies or their weapons back at them, meaning you needed to figure out a fresh combat strategy with every boss. Also there's a Power Rangers mechabot to fight and tons of goofy Anime-ness. James from Northern Virginia.

Dark horse GOAT: Speed-hacked Ms. PAC-man. All of the fun or Mr. Pac, but with level variety! And normally, I would say a mod disqualifies the game for the discussion, but the “speed hack” is so ubiquitous that it’s often the only version available in your local arcade.

The Freigh

Greatest game of all time nobody talks about - Planescape: Torment! This game showed what video game writing could be all the way back in 1999. It’s a direct predecessor of modern CRPG classics like Disco Elysium, Divinity Original Sin, and Pillars of Eternity, as well as any choice-based games like Mass Effect. Despite the critical acclaim it received at the time, it seems like the game never comes up as often as its contemporaries Fallout and Baldur’s Gate. Why is this?

Hey cohorts, last week on KFGD, Blessing talked about how he prefers making his waffles in the microwave instead putting them in the toaster which is insane to me. Is there any food that you make/prepare beyond the normal correct way?

Gabriel Cleveland

Hey, y'all, here's a game I was just discussing with a friend that I don't think enough people talk about: Breath of Fire IV. Compared to narrative-driven games where choice is a major selling-point that ultimately falls short at the end (think ME3's endings), BoF IV is largely linear, but presents two diametrically opposed worldviews expressed by and based on the experiences of the two protagonists (Ryu and Fou-Lu); ultimately, this leads to one solitary choice at the end with immediate, dramatic consequences. The way the story builds you to that inflection point is masterfully executed, with Fou-Lu and Ryu both experiencing several instances of human kindness and horrific atrocities along their individual journeys. When they finally face off at the end, both of their perspectives seem completely valid and earned due to what they have gone through. The game definitely doesn't get enough credit for being amazing, but it's one of my all-time favorites!

Hey there, Benihanas! I'm super excited for PAX East next week, in no small part because I'm going to be a Gym Leader for the PAX Pokemon League ARG for the first time! I look forward to taking all challengers and handing out badges to the worthy! My question is simple: If you were a Gym Leader in the Pokemon world, what would your typing and/or theme be? (If you like and pick this question, you don't have to read this part, but for reference, I'm a hatter who fled into the forest after being driven mad by mercury poisoning and was saved by the Pokemon inhabitants of the woods, and as such, my team is Fairy/Poison/Any Pokemon with Hats!)

Dear Cohorts! Your tasked with picking 1 AAA developer to bring back our beloved franchise Ape Escape! But it has to be done using Dreams! Who do you pick!?

What has been your biggest gaming rivalry? Mine was with a friend one summer when we decided to have a race to platinum/100% for the first inFamous game. It came down to tracking down the last of the 350 blast shard collectibles, which was taking a long time as they aren't marked on the map; they only appear on the radar if you are close and use the radar pulse. I had to concede as my mom was getting upset with how much time I was spending inside playing games during the summer break, which was frustrating as it had been a fierce competition and a grind.

Alex Smith

Is there a game that confused you when you were a kid, either mechanical or story-wise, that you came back to later and ended up liking?

Beau Bakken

My memory may be fuzzy, but weren't we all essentially playing Wordle years ago in Fallout 3 during those vault terminal hacking puzzles? and greatest unspoken game is the original Dark Cloud

Hey all, If you had to pick a single color of cereal boxes to eat from forever, what would it be? I think red is pretty tough to beat with Cap'n Crunch, Froot Loops, and Lucky Charms (Trix are bad and bring the whole group down). Edit: You can eat non-cereal foods, but when you're eating cereal it has to be from your color group. Also, this is purely flavor based, for mascot power rankings please see youtube.com/leovader

Hey all! With the announcement of Kingdom Hearts 4, I have a general feeling similar to the al Pacino line "just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in" from the Godfather movies. I was ready to be done with Kingdom Hearts after the end of 3, but I find myself ready to dive back in with this next game. Do you have any games/franchises that make you feel this way?

henrik mortensen

Valkyria Chronicles is a game I have never seen on any top 100 games of all time.

Adam_CW

Is the perfect racing game inevitable? By that I mean car graphics can only get so stunning, the feel of driving can only be refined so much, and the locations can only be so diverse. I feel like we saw with Forza a glimpse of everything you could want. Combine that with optional items and fictitious locations, and what more could you ask for. Will there one day be the best racing game of all time?

henrik mortensen

Hallo. What will you say is the newest genre in games created? Has there been any new genres created since the 2000s? Hate your show!

Ryan Butler

Hello cohorts and contributor, With the Sonic 2 movie doing very well both financially and with fans, are we finally at a point where video game movies aren’t automatically considered bad? Or will it take Mario, who started the cycle of horrible video game movies, finally having a good movie to redeem himself and improve the reputation of video game movies as a whole? Is this Mario’s way of trying to make amends for his greatest gaming sin?

Garrett Wainstock

a) What is the best thing you've jumped off of in games? b) What is the best part of the sandwich? (please do not elaborate)

Joe Dean

Hi CLCs, As we all know the 3DS and Wii U eshop are closing and because of that I've purchased way too many digital only games, and accrued a ton of gold points. With the deepest dive coming up I purchased the Chrono Cross Remaster just using gold points. I know Nintendo gets crapped on for bad online, but are we not giving Nintendo enough credit for gold points? Maybe I'm mistaken but I don't think Sony or Microsoft have an equivalent. And one of the greatest games of all time is Hotel Dusk Room 215 on the Nintendo DS. Great story, characters, dialogue, and art style. It's what got me into visual novels. Shout out to Little Kings Story, Edith Finch, Elite Beat Agents/Ouendan and Okami though (they're absolute bangers.) Thanks, Joe Dean

Hey Minnmaxers, Now that the opening weekend has passed, Sonic 2 is sitting at a comfortable 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. Obviously a Rotten Tomatoes score is not objectively correct or to be taken too seriously, but video game adaptations haven’t had the best track record for critical praise, and in that spirit I have a game called Rotten Tomatoes RUMBLE. I give you two movies, and you just guess which you think had a higher score on the site. Also, just so there’s no accusations of using weird straight-to-video releases, every film here had a theatrical release in the US. Love the show. Super Mario Bros (1993) - 28% CORRECT Ratchet and Clank (2016) - 21% Assassin’s Creed (2016) - 18% Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010) - 37% CORRECT Resident Evil (2002) - 36% Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016) - 37% CORRECT Mortal Kombat (2021) - 54% CORRECT The Angry Birds Movie (2016) - 43% Pokemon: The First Movie (1999) - 16% Need For Speed (2014) - 22% CORRECT Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) - 44% CORRECT Uncharted (2022) - 41% Warcraft (2016) - 28% CORRECT Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) - 20% FINAL ROUND. This time guess the film with the LOWEST score. And these choices are the lowest ranking video game movies on the site. Alone in the Dark (2005) - 1% CORRECT House of the Dead (2003) - 3% Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) 3%

Bryan Tylec

Hi folks! I recently started playing BotW for the first time (jealous?!?!?!) and I agree with all the praise everyone has given it but the one thing I never hear anyone talk about are those lovable Koroks! My favorite thing is when you find one and they shout "Ya ha ha!"...to the point where if I'm walking around outside and see an interesting leaf on the ground or something, I immediately shout their catch phrase out loud. Anyways, my question is, do you guys have a favorite sound bite from a game that is always running around in the back of your head somewhere?

HLarge4

Greetings ye cohorts and contributors.

Benjamin

Super Hexagon belongs at the top of any GOAT list. Perfect game for what it wants to do and a killer soundtrack to boot.

Alexi

Hey Minnmaxers, I've been sick the past few days and it's gotten me thinking, what's your favorite game to play when you're feeling under the weather? As for the underrated GOAT I would say Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix.

Colton Westbrooks

With Chrono Cross finally getting a remaster on modern platforms, my question is simple. What should be the next classic game to get a modern release? For me, it is Legend of Dragoon, Skies of Arcadia and Eternal Darkness. As for a game that is overlooked as a GOAT, I am going to go with Morrowind. It gets its share of praise still, but people knock it too much for the combat. The uniqueness of the setting and stronger RPG elements make it stand out. Plus, it has that thing that is all the rage these days amongst GOATs. An interesting open world that is explored naturally with minimal hand holding and no waypoints. Navigating by road signs and landmarks while reading directions from your journal is good gaming!

PoorAndCurly

Hey Minnmax, Just wanted to say thanks to Leo and Jacob for turning me onto Pistol Whip, what a game. What's your favorite game where narrative/writing/story is practically non-existent? Rhythm games and high score games like Geometry Wars and Nex Machina come to mind.

Joey

Ya read any good books lately?

Mark Ramirez

Hey Minnmax, how much mystery or confusion do you like in a game? I feel like most people say something is too predictable or it’s too confusing. What’s the happy medium?

Toke F.

Hello Leo, Jacob, Sarah, Ben and Leo. For the past 2,5 month I have been traveling the US, as I am European there has been a lot of culture shock moments. What is something that has surprised you culturely when traveling abroad? (Could you include some non Japan answers also).

Toke F.

For greatest game ever: Guts and Glory (2017), this game is a 3D take on the browser game "Happy wheels" it's simple yet elegant setup and emphasis on not being afraid of being a game, makes it into my personal favourite top 3 goat.

Shawn Mills

I would like to submit King's Quest 6 heir today, gone tomorrow for greatest game ever made. It was the first game written by Jane Jensen and contained several features ahead of its time such as a fast travel system, full voice acting, and a branching narrative with multiple endings. It paved the way for narrative in games today but gets overlooked for being a point and click adventure game that was only on PCs.

Bryan Sellner

Hi friends. Ben has spoken about “podcast games” before on the show, my question is more of a confession related to that. I usually never play a game without some form of second screen, whether it be a guide or twitch stream or a show I’m not too invested in. Is this a sin? Also, my vote for underrated game of all time is going to be Dragon Age: Origins.

Adrian Creates

So in the past year I've transitioned to PC as my preferred platform for gaming. One thing that I LOVE about gaming through Steam is the wishlist sale notifications. It makes me wonder: Why doesn't Play Station, XBox and Nintendo offer this on their consoles? Kinda feels like they want to offer discounts but don't actually want people to save money. Do you think this would help or hurt overall revenue?

StillGotGame

Hey guys. Do you think in the coming years Elden Ring will be seen as a Soulslike? Whilst this may seem obvious, I would argue that it will be seen as a blueprint for it's own genre of open world games, similar to Breath of the Wild, where exploration and finding your own way around a world full of surprises are the main themes. Therefore will we see these games as Ringlikes with more detachment from the souls aspect? (I hope a better term is found if they do)

Tristan

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is definitely one of the most overlooked masterpieces of recent years. Releasing in 2017 it was overshadowed by other big name games and being PC-only at the time it limited its audience even more. However, it's the best CRPG ever made IMO, the game does take a bit of time to learn, but the rewards are plentiful. What appear to be simple quests turn into larger events as you're given numerous options to compete each task. The characters add so much to the world with their deep backstories, witty banter and at times objective views to your choices. Every combat encounter is engaging, using the world around you to your advantage. While the game reviewed exceptionally well I feel it still goes underappreciated and unplayed by many.

Nate Marshall

Hello gang! Ben has mentioned that Kirby was a great game to play alongside Elden Ring. This got me thinking about ideal game pairings. As someone who is always playing multiple things concurrently, finding ones that mesh well can be difficult. Typically I try to pair something twitchier with a turn based strategy or rpg. What makes a good pair to you? Are there genres that you feel are particularly good matches? Or are you more concerned with having a range of vibes across the titles you're playing? I'm sure Ben will agree that having at least 1 podcast game going at a time is a must!

Matt Sheldon

Bless me cohorts for I have sinned. It has been 34 years since I gave my last confession. I have committed many sins in my life, but the one that keeps me lying up at night occurred in the incredible 1999 MMORPG Asheron's Call. Back then it was the wild west and we didn't have the modern conveniences of today's MMO's. This included Trade Request windows. In order to conduct a trade the usual method was for both parties to stand some distance apart, drop the requested items, then run and pick up the other party's pile of items they dropped while they run and grab yours. Another 10 year old and I developed a heinous plan and put it into practice. "Come meet me outside of town for the trade" my friend Randy would say. Little did they know that I was waiting in the nearby forest, ready to pounce. Randy would drop his items, the mark would drop his. Randy would start moving towards their items. They would move towards his. Then I'd strike. BAM! I'd leap from a nearby tree scooping up Randy's or their items (whichever was closest to my ambush point) and Randy would scoop up the other pile. We'd take our items and laugh all the way to the market at Cragstone. As we gathered items for bait, our takes got larger and larger. This went on for years until they implemented trade requests. We swindled dozens out of their hard earned items leaving ruined lives in our wake. Please cohorts, grant me the absolution I've been so desperately yearning for all these years so I can finally sleep at night! Tl:DR: A friend and I would steal items in Asheron's Call because trade requests did not exist. We stole items from dozens by ambushing them after they dropped their half of the trade on the ground. Please forgive me.

It's Hugo's Nook

Tangential to unappreciated amazing games, what about soundtracks? We always expect a new Mario or Zelda to come out with a banging soundtrack for every entry but what is a game you believe has an outrageously good soundtrack - maybe better than the game itself - that people don’t talk about? For me the original The Sims and all it’s expansions’ musics had no right being that good. From jazzy piano solos to tropical songs sung in simlish, it’s banger after banger.

PhillyYeetSteak

My pick for best game: Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. I always greatly appreciate when a game can use its unique strengths as a medium to enhance a story or moment. The ending of brothers makes the player's interaction have an additional meaning within the plot and it brought me to tears when i first played it. If Brothers was translated to a movie or book or something, it would lose that something special.

Matt Corrado

Because Chrono Cross is prevelant in our minds right now, it's got me thinking about other media that pertains to similar themes. I believe I've asked this question before, but have any of you watched the Netflix series Dark? It delves into time travel and alternate worlds in a very complex but super intriguing way. It quickly became my favorite show of all time and I think everyone (especially Ben, knowing his proclivites toward these themes) would benefit from watching this masterpiece. It was planned out from its incarnation to have 3 seasons and have a definitive conclusion. Many complex theoretical paradoxes are posed throughout the ride. It would be a blast to hear your thoughts on it.

Dylan Kuzel

Hello Minnmaxers! I’ve been thinking about brand loyalty and how our opinions of games that feature our favorite characters may be skewed because we’re already familiar with those characters and their worlds. Hypothetically, if Miyamoto made a new game with a brand new IP but never revealed that he had anything to do with making it, do you think the game would receive as much praise as his others? Or would it be seen as too easy or simplistic and mostly overlooked in favor of similar games with characters we already know? Also, are there any games you think are underrated (or overrated) for the same reason?

Zae

Hey minnmax, I know it’s a bit challenging to think about because we play games a lot, but I’ve been wondering: What kind of impact does a developer or publisher have on a mainstream audience? When we hear FromSoftware is making Elden Ring, we get excited for what came out to be a really good game. But we’re a little more in the know because we care about what’s going on behind a game. But does a big name developer, like Monolith Soft, Naughty Dog or 343 studios, announcing a new ip or game have as much pull with us as Gamers™️ as with the mainstream audience? I know a lot of how that audience views games is dependent on marketing but hypothetically speaking. Anyways thanks for all you do. I look forward to hearing your answers.

Boondock-Bandit

Hello Minngenold Maximus and crew! For some reason, with the Kingdom Hearts 4 reveal, I was floored and felt a ton of excitement for the game, yet I knew I had no interest in playing it. I’m not too sure why I felt so much hype after the initial premiere. I never really paid attention to the story and was completely surprised to see another main line game in that franchise. Have you all experienced hype for an upcoming game you have/had no interest in playing? Halo 3 would probably be another example for me, but that’s because Bungie’s trailers were SO GOOD. Thanks everyone!

jacob hubbard

Hey Gang! When people talk about Tony Hawk games, I feel like most people talk about Pro Skater 2. However, I would respectively submit American Wasteland as an underrated GOAT. It had the widest set of tricks, the most customization, awesome level creators, and a world map that could be traversed with no loading screens! Plus all of the celeb cameos. Thanks!

Kyle Silva

Hey cohorts! What are some games or trends that you wish had mainstream popularity? I wish Playstation’s “Dual View” 3D monitors were something in today’s era. These allowed people to not have to share the screen and have full screen real estate when playing with 3D glasses in couch multiplayer.

Alfredo

Hello Cohorts and applicable contributors! I was having trouble thinking of an over looked games and decided to play some Max Payne while thinking it over. I ended up playing it for over two hours. The gameplay is extremely satisfying and the story is the perfect balance of over the top cheesiness and engaging noir. I feel like this series is seen as more of a cult classic franchise, but I think it should be up there with the greats like Half Life and Doom. If I had to pick a specific game from the series, it’d be Max Payne 2 as that’s where Remedy really hit their stride.

Duderado

Hello crew! What video game controller have you held for the longest amount of time? For the sake of argument you can count handheld consoles. For me it has to be the Xbox 360 controller with countless hours put into various multiplayer games as well as using it for years as my main PC controller. Cheers! Nick from Indiana

israwwr

Hey Friends; I wanted to get your thoughts on the future of physical media and Digital vs Physical games

Luca Alberti

Hello MinnMaxers, the Secret GOAT is Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective: outstanding character design/soundtrack, great story and creative puzzles. the only thing it lacks is replayability, but you'll be willing to re-play it at least once after you finish it to piece it all togheter.

BEEFCAKE

Ape escape is rad.
