The scene in which Serge and Lynx switch bodies is done so well. After the cinematic ending with a genuinely creepy demonic Serge face, you see Serge speaking of his own volition for the first time. Then you try and move your character and see that it isn’t Serge that moves, but Lynx. That’s when it fully sinks in that your protagonist has switched bodies. Even though this isn’t my first playthrough, I still find this portion of the game so effective. I love the way the game ingrains this room into your head from the very beginning. By the time you reach the doors to this room, you’re already anticipating something big to happen. This scene is the perfect example of an insert disc 2 kind of moment, and was definitely a great stopping point for the deepest dive. P.S. Shout out to the Fort Dragonia music. It has an early 70’s prog rock vibe that I absolutely love.

General Guy

Can we talk about the sun boss in Fort Dragonia for a second (aka Sun of a Gun)? Definitely the strangest and most unsettling animations in the game. Also the fight is annoying. I never want to do this fight again (unless I can one hit kill him in subsequent playthroughs).

General Guy

Yeah, I definitely missed my chance on that one haha, but at least that makes for one redeemable thing about that fight

Matt Corrado

There's a man on Water Dragon Isle that gives you Skelly's Sturdy Ribs. Afterward he says that ever since he found it, a strange skeleton thingy has been haunting his dreams saying "put my body back together". He's more than happy to pass it on. However, he was currently in the presence of a human sized straw effigy brought to life twirling around on one foot right in front of him. Do you think the people in this world are jaded to the "monsters" walking around them? Where is the line drawn between nightmares and normalcy here?

Tonytheswordsman

Is Serge just telling everyone he is dead and not from this world? Wouldn’t that be something you keep to yourself ? At least for the most part? Imagine that being his response to everything “Hey are you from around here?” S: “No i died in this world” ….

Ah, my favorite part of Chrono Cross. Save Kid or be a bastard with an OP character? Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

Shuffleguy

Dear Community, A poem on saving kid: After escaping the Viper Castle, Our team gets in another hassle Kid is sick and needs a cure, But if she needs saving, I’m not so sure. Saving her seems logical to do, But my walkthroughs recommended the better crew. Leaving her to die seemed so harsh, So, my crew set out for the Hydra marsh. After killing the giant Pentapus, The caged fairy Razzly decides to join with us. The Hydra attacked and put up a fight But eventually fell to our greatest of might Doc saves kid and everything’s fine But she was also saved in the other timeline?! If I could do this all over again, I think I’ll go for the timeline with Glenn

Shuffleguy

I love how Chrono Cross teaches the youth tips for real-life Remember Kids: if a pirate offers you a medicine in the form of liquor, don’t drink it! It’s probably poisonous.

Some of the status ailments in this game are bizarre. One of my party members contracted flu, and I had no way to cure it, so they walked through Fort Dragonia in a zig-zag pattern. I like to imagine they were so congested and feverish that they constantly staggered into walls between battles.

Charlie Hunter

If the game had been more upfront about the destructive consequences of saving Kid, it would have made that choice much more difficult (save one person, but devastate countless others). But as it is, it just feels like not saving Kid is an unintuitive jerk move (or a very video gamey move to get certain characters).

MickManga

For this part of the deepest dive I wanted to share a personal story, so please bear with me. Hydra Marsh is my favorite location in all of gaming. It's the closest a game has come to the Toxic Jungle from Nausicaa Valley of the Wind my favorite movie. Whenever I hit a writer's block while working on a novel, I return to Hydra Marsh to find inspiration. Something about the enemy designs, landscape and music fills me with creative inspiration. Plus I adore the fact you can save the Hydra from going extinct while saving Kid. And if you do everything right you can also save the dwarfs and the fairies as well. It all comes back to what you did in the Hydra Marsh.

While exploring the sea with Korcha's ship I encountered a foggy area where I found a huge pirate ship that is posing as a "Ghost" ship. The sequence of events is pretty weird. You have to prove yourselves to the pirates by engaging in combat with robots, a big bird name, Polly, and finally the captain himself. When you win, you get drugged and thrown into the brig. The ship then gets invaded by a "real" ghost ship and all hell breaks loose. You work your way thru the ship helping all the pirates drive the ghosts away eventually earning the respect and admiration of the crew. This was a fun little pointless adventure and the dialoged was great.

Alex Smith

I was surprised at how many party members the game throws at you in this section. I was also surprised that I just stuck with the same party for almost this entire section (Serge, Kid, Guile, swapping Kid for Korcha when she was out for the count)

Alex Smith

After missing some stuff by not hitting A on background things in the last section, I've started hitting A like a mad man every time I'm exploring a area. The coolest thing I found was in the library at Viper Manor, I found a secret door behind the desk and it lead to a basement where Epoch from Chrono Trigger was being repaired. I made a surprised yelp noise I've never made before.

Alex Smith

The darker tone in the "Save Kid" path was really shocking after finishing Chrono Trigger right before going into Cross. Trigger had some darker stuff happen, but the overall tone felt way more light hearted. I wasn't expecting to accidentally start a fairy massacre as a result of helping my nearly dead friend.

Matt Corrado

In Termina, after saving Kid, Korcha abruptly askes her to be his wife right in front of Serge, which, first of all, is alwfully presumptive. He doesnt know the courtship status between Serge and Kid! Or between Mojo and Kid!! Anyways, afterward, he can join the party. I accept his invite but don't put him in my party and so he proceeds to jump into the water to swim all the way back to Guldove That's gotta be like 20 miles! Or even hundreds...the scale of the world map is a little strange. That scene took a while to fully absorb. No need to read this part on the discussion, but during part 2 of Hanson's playthrough, you made note of Skies of Arcadia as a possible future Deepest Dive. As someone who recently dusted off their Dreamcast solely to play through that game, I'm optimisticly holding my breathe that we get a port of some sort. That game is a delight.

Hayden Berthelot

Here's a more general thought that poked at me while playing this section: Does anyone rename characters in these older JRPGs? It has always seemed like a bad move to me. Especially in this game where, for example, you've interacted with Korcha for hours up to this point, and the moment he decides to join your crew, you can change his identity forever?? It's such a strange idea. Not to mention making it impossible to look up guide info on a character you've renamed and don't remember the original name for.

Brainfreeze

Just a quick follow-up on a subject that was discussed in part one of the Deepest Dive and afterwards in the MinnMax Discord: Based on the credits of the official Chrono Cross Soundtrack, only Scars of Time (The opening theme) and Radical Dreamers (The ending theme) appear to use real recordings of real instruments. Every other song in the game is completely synthesized. So the sound of fingers running down the guitar strings are actually all digital! Edit: I should point out that this is only within the game of Chrono Cross / Radical Dreamers. The launcher for the Radical Dreamers Edition does have 8 new orchestrated versions of CC tracks.

I never have been able to resist Pip's "adowableness", and I've used him in every playthrough since I first played when the game was released! Many argue that he's the "worst character" due to a glitch that can occur, causing his stat growth and Element grids to not update when evolving into his final forms, but I find his evolution gameplay gimmick to be one of the most interesting in the entire game. You can equip innate-only Elements to his grid, have him evolve into a different innate, and still keep those innate-only Elements equipped -- even move them around -- as long as they aren't removed, making him an AMAZING support character, combined with his HP + Stamina healing level 5 tech, Soothe. I always go with a White second form into a Blue Archangel as his final form. Where my Pipsqueaks at? (P.S. Pip totally invented uwu-speak.)

lcs

I felt really bad for the dwarves... until Water Dragon Isle. >:(

Jonathan Valdez

I am unsure about how to feel with how the party works. in most rpgs the party members you dont have active are still assumed to be traveling with you but in chronos cross it feels like you just completely abandon them. for most characters its fine but when kid jumped out of some boxes and talked about finding a separate boat from me to get to Fort Dragonia it felt very strange. also wish i hadnt learned about the secret to how dialogue works last week because now i know what the characters are saying aren't actually part of their own personality. I am actually really loving the game though

Jeorin

This game is a bit of a nightmare for completionists. The character Razzly can only be recruited if you chose the 'save Kid' path. If you put Razzly in your party for the Hydra fight, there will be an extra scene after the battle. This seems pretty minor, but has significant consequences later when visiting Water Dragon Isle. If Razzly was with you for the Hydra fight, Rosetta survives the Dwarven attack. If you didn't bring Razzly to the Hydra fight, Rosetta dies. The only way to get Razzly's level 7 tech late in the game, is to have Rosetta die, making it easy to miss. While frustrating from a gameplay standpoint, I feel like it matches the themes of the story quite well. Even the smallest of actions can have significant consequences.

Interrotta

I didn’t realize that you could change character order using the equivalent of Select, so that “head, body, tail” puzzle in fort dragonia was a real head scratcher for me until I finally looked up a guide and was like “oh right, the select button used to mean something!”

Brandon Floyd

Hey Serge Squad! I made it a priority to let both versions of Leena meet upon returning to the Home World for the first time. After seeing that there was in fact special dialogue for this I started seeking out more of it. I ended up taking Leena to Cape Howl to see the Serge + Leena rock. To my surprise there was a full scene and not just one or two lines. Between this scene, the campfire scene with Kid, and Karsh being surprised that Glenn is with me, it seems there is an almost overwhelming amount of optional/missable dialogue in this game.

Matt Lynch

My Serge feels extremely OP right now. His white elements that attack all enemies just run over everything. I haven’t come close to dying yet. This is my first play through is anyone else finding it really easy so far? Excited to see where it goes with this change at the stopping point.

Dominic Cichocki

It was brought up briefly in last episode, but I wanted to highlight the pipeline of games a lot of people on this team worked on: Chrono Trigger to Radical Dreamers to Xenogears to Chrono Cross. Other games like FFVII were worked on during this period as well, but it was around the completion of Xenogears and Cross that a lot of Square staff members defected to form Monolith Soft. While we all know Xenosaga is a take on the Gears story/mythology, I also think there's stuff to compare the direction of Chrono Cross to Monolith's Baten Kaitos series. Specifically the colorful, tropical art style and the writing by Masato Kato. Certain elements of BK's plot remind me of Chrono Trigger and vice versa. I guess if anyone needed a semi-Chrono Cross spiritual successor, it's Baten Kaitos!

Zach Helton

One of the coolest things in this section to me is that the mirrors in Nikki’s and Riddel’s rooms both work. Also don’t look at the achievements for this game, they seem to have light spoilers

G-Max Thoeren

The thing that got the biggest reaction out of me was actually something I had to look up after the fact. So I recruited Razzly in the swamp and added her to my party as she was the first green innate party member, as most of the area's enemies were yellow. She quickly became a main party member after I saw her hit fat 150s with her tech against the boss. I also liked how she calls Serge "Sergey" as it made me think of a big gruff Russian guy, and she seemed to have a lot of unique dialogue, especially at Water Dragon Isle. By bringing Razzly for the hydra fight, I was able to save her sister, Rosetta - which locks you out of the item you need to get Razzly's level 7 tech! While I think it's cool to play with your expectations and only have certain characters unlock per playthrough, this decision baffles me. I just do not understand what the game is trying to accomplish by gimping the usefulness of my favorite party member so far because I wanted to include her in a part of the story where it made sense.

Colton Westbrooks

One of the cool things I like about this section of the game is that we start to see the game world reacting to events. We start to see how it is more than just Serge’s story. Revisiting Termina, the mood has shifted, everyone is on edge about the Dragoons moving out and the Porre army approaching and what that means for their future. Furthermore, even Fargo has it out for Lynx and has been in opposition to him in some way. That is all just Another World. When accounting for the Hydra dying in Home World, no matter the choice the player makes, it starts to feel like two living worlds in a way that I find pretty impressive for a PS1 game.

Kevin Robinson

Am I the only one who found it weird that when Korcha explains what is going on to Doc after saving Kid, he says that the entire party is from Another World and only Serge is from his original world? What, Poshul and Razzly are chopped liver?

Brian Paradis

My favorite small moment from this section is if you try to use the Beeba Flute right after you get it, Beeba will slide back on screen to remind you that you have to use it out in the open.

DarkFishDays

Hello you freaks of evolution! Back in Vipor Manor there’s a soldier still waiting for his meal. He says ”I’ll wait ‘til hell freezes over!” Let’s see if he’s there in part 3…

Kirk Mudle

Haven’t made it to the “big change” yet sadly, so I’ll have to wait on listening to this one… or maybwe this dweepwest dwive will bwoaden my view of de world?

Kraid Belmont

How many times did everyone have to use the flute to summon the Wingapede? I was about 7 in before I stood in the center.

Yarrow

As a habitual "save items for when I need them and then never use them" player, this game has such smart systems that actually have me utilizing my full inventory! For example, you get ointments from the Cat Burglars on Mt Pyre, so if you get burned, just use them. You'll get more from enemies in the area. It's awesome to see a 20+ year old game with smart design like this that can still be rare in games today.

Shawn Mills

I really enjoyed getting Skelly back together by collecting his parts and I love his idle animation where his head spins around. His grandma isnt good at picking up context clues though, she tells him he isnt eating enough when she first sees him.

Alexander Scheck

Shout-out to Korcha's lvl 3 attack! Just slapping the baddie's belly with his fishing rod. It has such a satisfying sound effect and feels incredibly rude. Love it!

Zach Gileau

I loved the campfire scene with Kid after Water Dragon Isle. Her monologue was surprisingly well written and poignant. It fleshed her character out in a way that we hadn't seen from anyone else in the cast so far. We learn about her past and her worldview and why she's doing what she's doing. They also told us a bit about her past while still leaving more for us to explore later. This game's writing continues to impress me!

Uncle Longfellow

Some more fun stuff from the game in part 2 that ties it to Chrono Trigger: - Names/characters: Luccia (Lucca), Glenn (Frog of course), Leena (Queen Leene), Harle (Marle) - Lucca is mentioned by name by Lynx, so we know she was around - Revisiting the old man in the library at Viper Manor and poking around behind his desk leads to a hidden room with a crashed transport (looks like the Epoch) and a Beach Bum (Nu) who can change your characters' name for you. - The Zenan continent, as well as the nations of Guardia and Porre are mentioned by Radius, so at this point we at least know we're in the same world as CT

Matt Rogers

Who is your favorite character you’ve recruited up to this point and why is it Greco?

Braulio Martinez

Hey MinnMax, Have you changed your party? I am still playing with Serge, Kid, and Nikki. Kid and Nikki were my first recruits. I now have like 10 more but other than subbing Greco when Kid was ill, I haven't even wanted to use the others. Since the leveling up syatem makes no sense, I just look at the other recruits' stats and they are all so weak. Plus, like Kyle said, you only really have one slot to rotate party members! P.s. anyone know what happens if you don't have Kid in Fort Dragonia?

Joe Garcia

The secrets in the game are incredible! I found a “feathered dress” in a closet behind the tent you wake up in after jumping off of the cliff at Vipor Manor. There is no indication that a room is there. Anyone else find this dress?

Ethan Poe

This is my first time with Chrono Cross and the expressionist zone as you first play as Lynx is maybe my favorite shift in visuals in any game period. Just awesome.

Mai Sinclair

This is when the game comes together for me mechanically to play my preferred way. I allocate all elements on level1/2 across the entire party. Quickly cast the level 1 spells the. Switch to next person to set the field the desired color. And then pull out the big attack/heal with field full. This also makes a mechanic that opens in the next section easy to pull off. Through end game I prefer this method because the turn field color elements can only be set on an innate character. I want that character available to cast the "big spell."

David Dillinger (yojimbodjd)

Those dwarves cursing mankind all the while wiping out the poor fairies. I felt so bad for Razzly and her sister’s death. Did anyone else find the secret room in viper manor below the library that has the Chrono Trigger time machine, Epoch?

henrik mortensen

Please help me like the element system. This remaster needs a digital manual! I guess.

Braulio Martinez

I just recruited Funguy and I refuse to add him to my party simple because he looks ridiculous. Why are his stats so damn good!?

Duderado

The change in tone from choosing to not help Kid makes me feel like a grade-a asshole. Korcha really grills you for not being a true friend and trying to save her. I'm glad she lived but I would have sacrificed her for Glenn anyway :)
