Hey MinnMaxers! Talking about handhelds, I got a Nintendo DS Lite back in 2007 and played the heck out of that thing. So many great games! I think Diddy Kong racing was the first one I got, and Animal Crossing Wild World was my first entry into the great franchise. Plus, who could forget pictochat? With that, is there any concept cooler than DS download play today? One person has the game, and everyone can play! It was crazy to me how they made completely different game types to be played that way. Did you have any favorite games/experiences via DS download play? I remember one time I was on a flight for a trip with my family and some family friends. Me, my brother, and some kids in the other family we were traveling with had some DSes. We were playing Bomberman, but going to great lengths to not say BOMBerman while on the plane to avoid a bad situation. As for games, my favorites were probably Elite Beat Agents, Advanced Wars: Days of Ruin, or Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. If you didn't have a DS, were you super jealous of those who did?

Garrett Hulfish

The Playdate is catching a lot of attention due to the addition of the crank as a unique input method. What is a favorite example of unique input methods adding to the gameplay or narrative?

Jeff D

You are on a multi day cross country road trip you have a choice of one of of five characters to go with who do you choice? Please consider driving ability and conversation skills in your decision making. Option 1) Cloud Strife Option 2) Link Option 3) Kratos Option 4) Geralt of Rivia Option 5) Arthur Morgan

Hi Ben and the Gang, After being called Trim by Ben on the show last week, I saw it as a signal from the universe that I can’t keep putting off going to the barbershop any longer. My beard really is getting out of hand, so getting it in order is my BetterQuest goal for the month. Also, a hypothetical: imagine that you’re given a talented team, an unlimited amount of resources, and access to any IP you’d want, be it from games or other media. But you can only commit to making one game, and one game only: would you make an original title or would you take up the IP offer, and if so, what IP would you choose? I guess the question behind the question is, would you be more afraid of potentially making a badly received title based on your personal idea, or potentially adding a stinker to the legacy of an IP that might be beloved by many people?

Tim Britvich

Here's a thinker: How much hands has a handheld held, if that handheld had held hands?

Justin Ray

One of the greatest games of all time that is never talked about is The Legend of Zelda A Link Between Worlds. This is mainly due to it being overshadowed by the popularity of other entries in the series. Are there any games in a series that, in your opinion, are the best but are overlooked because of their popular counter parts?

Brian W

Game character cross promotions are the new rage. What are some you’d love to see? If I could get captain falcon in a punch out game that would be pretty sweet. Faaalcoon PUNCH!

chris cuevas

Hello MinnMax. What's a time you witnessed someone blowing it? I remember my cousin started playing FF6 and he got stuck close to the beginning of the game because he couldn't do the combo attack which was required to progress in the game. He claimed to have tried everything and since he couldn't figure out what he was doing wrong he just started grinding the weak mobs in that spot until he was ridiculously high level. When I visited him for Christmas I took his GBA and realized he wasn't entering the input by pressing A again at the end. He was pretty upset but he was also happy he could actually play the game. Thnx for the great shows keep it up!

Pelicanman

Inspired by last week’s discussion of the greatest games of all time (that nobody ever talks about), what do you think are the greatest *moments* in games of all time (that nobody ever talks about)?

Bryan Tylec

Hey everyone, I live in the city and don't own a car so I am constantly having to take the bus/train/subway everywhere. I have never once seen anyone using their Switch out in public except for me. How often do you guys see a Switch in the wild?

Styster

What was an underrated DS multiplayer game that you and your friends had a blast with?

PoorAndCurly

Hey Minnmax, How competitive are you with other video game media outlets? Do you see another outlet get an interview with someone cool and get a little envious?

G-Max Thoeren

Is there a game or series that you got into in an unconventional way, or that you would recommend people try in an unconventional way? I think Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep might be a better place to start the series than KH1, as it is a prequel that doesn't require playing other games in the series, feels a lot less clunky as it came out in 2010, and you can get the majority of the story by playing through one ~7-hour campaign (and watching the bonus cutscenes for completing all three on youtube).

Adam Cohen

Hello MinnMaxers, So much of games media is focused around Game of the Year discussions. Based on interviews you've done with them, how much do you think developers care about Game of the Year?

Jordan Blayney

Monolith Soft continues to impress with new trailer for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 which is coming out sooner than September. Does Monolith Soft get enough credit for the consistently great games they produce? All of their games consistently become some of my most anticipated as soon as they are announced. For me, they are one of Nintendo's best developers.

Brendan Johnson

Are there any particular quotes from games that you would say non-stop with friends or a significant other? My wife over heard me playing Rayman Legends (my late pick for game that should be in the top ten discussion) and now when ever she needs help she says “help meeee” in the teensie voice and I’ve started doing it back.

Jared Piers

Hey Cohorts and Ben, Any of you ever dream about games that dont exist? I once dreamt I was in my childhood video rental store and as a way to figure out if I was dreaming or not, I picked a case off the shelf and read it. On it was a picture of Mario and Toad in tuxedos standing in front of two shih tzus wearing bride and groom outfits and above, in the typical Mario font, it read 'Mario Dog Weddings'. I think this could be the next big spin off.

Luca Alberti

Hi there MinnMax! Xenoblade Chronicles 3 has just been bumped up to July! The most recent entries in the series have spawned lots of discussion regarding their character design,to me, it seems they finally struck a good balance but I'm not sure if I'd describe it as iconic, how do you feel about this new party? Care to give a few examples of iconic character designs outside of Mascots/main characters?

mopies

Hello Ben and the gang. If you had to could delete one sequel from existence, which would it be and why? It doesn't necessarily have to be a bad game, just one that dampers your love for that which came before.

Gnoale

One day, I had a line of ants marching along a doorway in my house. So I put an ant trap in there path and watched their numbers dwindle of the course of several days. I don't know if it was the fact that I had no choice but to look at it each day (since I walk through that doorway every day), but I had a strong realization that I was playing Tower Defense in real life! This was quite a surprise, so I was wondering if anyone else had a similar surprise revelation of seeing an unexpected game genre or mechanic being performed in the real word.

sandeezy

Hi Ben and friends! I’ll start out by saying that I was an avid Kingdom Hearts hater for all my life, much like Hanson, but I decided to give the series an honest try last year and actually fell in love. The gameplay is genuinely fun and the story is laughable (in a good way?) and I’m actually excited for KH4. My question is, have any of you had a complete 180 change in opinion like this on a game that you hated? Thanks!

Hunter Sax

Gameboy Advance SP is my favorite followed by the original PSP. Both, I was too young to understand. The first week I tried to play the SP like a laptop because that makes sense right? The UMD...I think every kid tried to rip the disc out of the cartridge. Did any of you break or use a console wrong?

MrButtons

Hey Cohorts! How do y'all feel about balance changes to games that aren’t necessarily centered around PvP experiences? I'm not a particularly big fan of patches for games like Borderlands 3 and Elden Ring, where some of the wackier and more overpowered builds are nerfed following release, especially when these games are predominantly focused on a PvE experience. P.S. Was super happy that Sarah briefly mentioned Night in the Woods for Greatest Game of All Time (that no one talks about). I would also champion Dead Space 2 for such a category. Those creepy babies still haunt my nightmares. Keep up the good work!

Ethan Poe

Hey Cohorts! This is shaping up to be a big week from hardware from outside the traditional players. Which has me wondering if you had to only play games from one lesser console(No Sony, Nintendo, Sega, Microsoft, Etc) which piece of hardware would you choose?

VDGMS

With the handheld talk this week, I have to assume that Tetris is the greatest handheld game ever but what would be unanimous second best?

Vilis

I dunno, if Ben would remember this, but back when he was at Game Informer I wrote in about how I use my DS Lite to this day as an alarm clock. I haven't actually played it in like a decade, but it's delightful chirp is still the perfect wake up sound. Does anyone else use secondary functions like this on their handheld gaming devices? That said, my favorite will always be the PSP.

Jerry Young

Hi MinnMax! So I have been watching the annihilator cup cup the last few weeks, if you aren't familiar it is a 5 week gaming tournament for streamers that includes a wide variety of games and genres(Apex, Dead by Daylight, Street Fighter V, Halo, Counter Strike). Last week, it was Street Fighter. It was fascinating to see streamers who play competitive games fumble their way through Street Fighter, talking about how different this was than anything they had played before. This got me thinking, how would you go about introducing someone to a genre they had never played before? For someone that has never played a shooter, where would you start? How about someone that has never played a FromSoft game? How do you introduce mechanics and ideas that will be completely new to them. Thanks!

RickyWinterborn

i remember as a kid dreaming about the day when i would be able to play gamecube level games on handheld, and how impossible it seemed at the time. do you think there's an aspect of devices like the steam deck existing that almost ruins the idea of a handheld? i kind of miss when handheld games were developed with graphical limitations and portability in mind.

Could_be_a_Librarian

Hey! I've had my Steam Deck for a few weeks now, and I've been showing it off to roommates. Yesterday, I was marveling at how much fun I was having playing Destiny 2 via Remote Play from my PS5. I let him play a while on it, and he ended up playing it on the couch in front of the TV. In that moment, I suddenly missed the days when Playstation forayed occasionally into handhelds. Do you think the success of devices like the Switch and Steam Deck will spur Playstation into another handheld? Or Microsoft into making their first? The Steam Deck has me longing for a Switch-like from Playstation.

Right now my two year old is very into stuffed animals. She has to go to bed with them and holds them in the morning. Problem is, we’re at capacity. She has reached the limit of what she can carry! My wife wants to get her another and I say Neh. I know she will be upset she can’t carry them all! What side of the is age old debate do you stand on?

Toby King

Cohorts, contributors, countrythem. What is the single thing holding back a notable series of your choice? For me, as an Englishman, it’s the English voice actors in xenoblade chronicles (literally, English 🇬🇧). There is nothing more infuriating to me than hearing their voices. I remember literally seething when the trailer reveal for XC3came earlier this year. All respect to the VAs who deserve all the praise in the world but something feels so incongruous with the deep fantasy setting they have built and the British dialogue. It’s like the professor in Pokémon legends arceus. Dude was majorly creepy. Anyway, let me know your probably less judgmental thoughts. Cheerio! 🫖

Jonnythan 12

What’s the worst that’s ever happened to a handheld(s) of yours? For me, I dropped my first DS in a lake in Minnesota on accident, and then the replacement one broke in half, and is still held together by a few wires and a lot of gorilla glue.

Verdantree

Through the ages of video games, it seems like the one constant is losing save files. Whether it be losing Passwords, corrupted data, save batteries dying, having to delete files to make space on a memory card, or not having enough space on a memory card, cloud saves not syncing etc. Etc. So my question is: 'What life-changing/soul-crushing experiences have you had involving losing a save file?' Personally, the one that will be stuck in my mind until the day I die is accidentally saving over my main, and nearly finished, save file for Children of Mana on the DS. with a secondary save I had so I could play as a different character. It breaks my heart to this day. Cheers muchly for your stories! PS. Ape Escape 2 is my vote for one of the best games ever made.

Gabriel Cleveland

Hey, y'all, speaking of handhelds, I mean holding hands, one thing that's been really tough the past two years with the pandemic has been long stretches of limited to no physical contact with others. I find hugs especially can be so healing! It is in that spirit that I ask: If you could share a big, heart-filling hug with any video game character, who would it be (and why)? (At or near the summit on my list would be Madeline from Celeste. She overcame so many incredible challenges and following her journey made me feel like I could be capable of more as a person as well!)

Duderado

Hello! Goku has chosen you to join him in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber where one year inside is the equivalent to one day on the outside. BUT you can only take one game console with you that doesn't have an internet connection. What console would it be and why?

CptCobblePot

Hey Minnmax Crew! Seems like the Gameboy is such a well known device outside of non-gaming groups. Wether it’s the OG, color, or Advanced. It’s beloved among a lot of gamers for both nostalgic reasons and some dang good games! So my question to you guys. What did the PSP do wrong to not see this kind of excitement? Did it lack games or just iconic games? I really enjoyed my time with the PSP and admittedly, the adorable Go. It gave me some amazing side stories of some of the best mainline games (looking at you Metal Gear Solid and God of War) which seemed to be the selling strategy behind it. What do you all think? Thanks CLCs!

Tanner Methven

Hey Minnmaxers, Sonic 2 is sitting at a comfortable 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. Obviously a Rotten Tomatoes score is not objectively correct or to be taken too seriously, but video game adaptations haven’t had the best track record for critical praise, and in that spirit I have a game called Rotten Tomatoes RUMBLE. I give you two movies, and you just guess which you think had a higher score on the site. Also, just so there’s no accusations of using weird straight-to-video releases, every film here had a theatrical release in the US. Love the show. Super Mario Bros (1993) - 28% CORRECT Ratchet and Clank (2016) - 21% Assassin’s Creed (2016) - 18% Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010) - 37% CORRECT Resident Evil (2002) - 36% Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016) - 37% CORRECT Mortal Kombat (2021) - 54% CORRECT The Angry Birds Movie (2016) - 43% Pokemon: The First Movie (1999) - 16% Need For Speed (2014) - 22% CORRECT Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) - 44% CORRECT Uncharted (2022) - 41% Warcraft (2016) - 28% CORRECT Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) - 20% FINAL ROUND. This time guess the film with the LOWEST score. And these choices are the lowest ranking video game movies on the site. Alone in the Dark (2005) - 1% CORRECT House of the Dead (2003) - 3% Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) 3%

Hello Minners and Maxxers. I have often scoffed at some of the handheld advertisements for having people pull out thier handhelds in places I would never even think about it. What is the least conventional place you have pulled a handheld console, and how long did that session last?

MyNameIsDan

Hi friends,, Question for Kelsey: I've been rebuilding my N64 collection and have educated myself on common signs of counterfeit games. How often do you see people trying sell fake copies of games? Is there a particular retro game you see being reproduced as a counterfeit? Thanks! Dan

Andy Dwyer

Hi Minnmax, For the Switch do you feel like there are genres/games that belong on a tv vs handheld games? Or do you simply play all your Switch games however you want? I personally see Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild as games I need to play on a TV while Pokemon is still the perfect handheld game.

Mark Ramirez

What is the longest you’ve ever stuck with a game? I’m 2 months and 60+ hours in to Elden Ring and still going strong!

Viz

Hi Ben and the CLCs, have you tried Vampire Survivor yet?

Starkiller

Hey crew! I've been playing a lot of Lego Star Wars Skywalker Saga, and it's probably the best StarFox game we've had since... well... StarFox. Are there any games that are good versions of a different dormant series?

TheUnchartedWolf

Hey CLC'S, Recently I've been getting back into One Piece and I thought of a fun game for this wacky series. REAL OR FAKE PIRATE. The rules are simple I give you a name and short description of a pirate and you say if they're real or fake Round 1: Who's Who, an ex CP9 agent turned headliner of the beast pirates Answer: REAL Round 2: Big Mom, One of the 4 emperors of the sea with the ability to bring inanimate objects to life Answer: REAL Round 3: Old Man Sanzo, Captain of the White Fox Pirates who has the ability to turn his body into fog Answer: FAKE Round 4: Scratchmen Apoo, Captain of the On Air Pirates who can change his body parts to musical insturments. Answer: REAL

Any baseball fans on the podcast today? Watching the Cardinals - Brewers game recently, and I was SHOCKED by the amount of video game music the Brewers used in their stadium, from the Mario death jingle when the opposing team struck out, to play old school Pokemon battle music during mound visits. Crazy! Anyway, my question is - What are some good "baseball games"? - that is, a video game that I can play on one TV, while half-watching a baseball game on another TV? So like a podcast game, but even less intense. Thanks y'all, love the show!

PhillyYeetSteak

Anyone else hope that AA batteries become obsolete during our lifetime? I have so few devices that require them at this point that its always a big hassle when i have to replace them. Any other pieces of tech that you hope goes away?

Muffyn Crumbs

A flip of the question from last week: what's your least favorite game that everyone talks about? (bonus points if you've actually played it)

bianca ryckert

You must choose a single character from each of the following pairs to join you on a 5,000 mile road trip. Who will it be? - Claptrap or Tiny Tina - Trevor (GTAV) or Mr. Resetti - Dung Eater (Elden Ring) or Clippy (Microsoft Word) - Zubat or Magikarp - Samus (Other M) or Navi

Tonytheswordsman

Hey Hanson, On an old replay I heard you tell the old hide and seek story with Dan. Do you still play hide and seek, do you still stand by it being the best game ? What is everyone’s favorite game to play outside (tag, hide and seek, etc.)?

whitemex

Hey there Benjamin Button and the demolition crew! I went to NYC for vacation in 2008 and visited the Nintendo Store. This was at the height of the Wii's popularity. The store had kiosks upon kiosks of Wiis running numerous demos. At one point i couldn't help but notice a group of, what I'd describe as, on lunch Office Bros checking stuff out. One of the Bros decided to play a little bit of Mike Tyson's Punch Out. I thought he was grabbing the Wiimote oddly but to my shock he started flailing is arms and punching the air as if thats how you control a 20 year old game. It didn't work and the bro just gave up and walked away. Anyway, do any of you have stories of games being played wrong?
