It's time to submit your comment for the third section of Chrono Cross! Even if you haven't hit the stopping point, feel free to submit a comment on what you've played so far. For this discussion, we're covering everything in the game from the "big change" to another "big change". Sorry for being so cagey, but we hope you understand what we're talking about here. Please don't spoil anything after that point in the comments.

Submit one comment below and please get specific. Don't write a long review, please keep your one comment to around the length of a tweet. I repeat: please keep your one comment to around the length of a tweet. We want to get to as many comments as possible. Let's get specific, submit a comment about your favorite character moment, dragon attack, animation from Harle, etc. The more specific you are, the higher the odds of us reading your comment during the discussion. We'll finish collecting comments on Tuesday morning.

Here's the first discussion in case you missed it - https://youtu.be/va0_nsRLTJ0 and here's the second! https://youtu.be/La7FbJzBnXI

We're recording The Deepest Dive on Chrono Cross on Tuesday night at 8pm Central, and we're actually going to try recording it live on MinnMax's Twitch channel.

In the original version of the game, Sneff refers to the magic trick where he turns people into cats as "Cat on a Hot Tin Rooff" (sp) but in the remaster he calls it "Catamorphosis." Just thought you all would like to know.

Someone said on the last episode that they don't use any status buffs/debuffs in rpgs, but you absolutely should in this game. You can slot any buff/debuff moves in level 1, 2, or 3 slots and even though it will display them as -3, -2, or -1, it actually has no negative effect on those moves. Considering how little damage any attack in those low level slots will do at this point in the game, you're better off the buffs/debuffs.

I think Miguel has to be in the conversation for most impactful boss fights of the PS1 Square generation. The difficulty, story, and haunting music add up to an unforgettable experience unlike many others I experienced at the time. On our first run in the early 2000s, my brother and I absolutely could not beat this fight, and we became well acquainted with every scene of that pre-fight cutscene. To add insult to injury, my 8 year old brain somehow deleted our file before we could ever finish the fight. While we later would go on to beat Miguel on a new file, I cannot think about this fight without remembering the most traumatic gaming moment of my childhood.

Listening to last week's episode was eye opening for me. I apparently skipped out on almost everything. 1) Opted to not help Kid, and since I did that I never went back to check on her. Figured she's a goner. 2) Because I never checked on her I never got the astral amulet so I never went back to the home world 3) Hydra Marshes? Water Dragon? Dwarf and Fairy war? Never heard of em. After the pirate ship I just went to Mount Pyre which was a fun challenge starting every battle at low health.  4) Because I never went back to Kid I knew absolutely nothing of her motivation/backstory until the last DD episode.  I was actually wondering what was going on with Kid's story, it seemed like it needed to be fleshed out which apparently it would have if I played it differently or correctly.  For me she just showed up at the end of Fort Dragonia saying something like "It'll take more than some poison to keep me down" before being stabbed.  Looking forward to continuing my apparent "0% Kid" run of this game.  Shoutout to the Deepest Dive Channel in the Discord for helping me fill in the blanks after I came to this realization.

I meant to write in last week with this one but after seeing the Tzetze Fly enemy on the ghost ship I haven’t been sleeping. Who is this freak? How did this flying spider testicle hybrid make it into the game?

Rory Sublett

Hello fellow divers! I’d like to write in for a missed joke opportunity, when recruiting Van, the land lord says “Good luck looking for the Frozen Flame, though I think you’ll just get burned.” She should say “freezer burn” instead. Thank you.

Charlie Hunter

When I talked to the poetry waitress at the bar in Arni as Lynx when I first got back to Home World in this section, she referred to Serge as the leader of her fan club. Because I listened to her poem one time? Come on!

Charlie Hunter

It's really fun to track down and recruit all of the characters in this game. But for me, they all just go in the menu, never to be seen again. Last week you guys referenced that it works for Pokemon, but Pokemon has the benefit of 6 party slots. Here we've got 3 and one is always taken by Serge/Lynx and I am always compelled by story reasons to use a few others. The freak squad never has a chance. I wish there were either more party slots or half of these characters were just summons instead.

Timothy Smith

I enjoyed the way they tie character’s stories to the plot/fetch quest part of getting to the Dead Sea. I think they would be a lot worse without the character drama. The Fargo Nicki And Marbule bit is interesting and a little forced but fun. The Garai and Radius one is more compelling to me since the mystery of Garai is noted a lot in the game prior to this. Also bringing in the Masamune from Chrono Trigger was out of nowhere and slightly confusing why it is so evil. Forget if they explain this. Thoughts on how they handled this section?

Tom Rickard

Unfortunately I was unable to finish the entire section but I do just want to say…Funguy for president, Starky for VP. I love how zany the characters are getting. My girlfriend saw Funguy’s character model and said “Looks like if a pervert made Toad more realistic”.

Matt Lowery

When I was talking to a few of the Porre soldiers at Viper Manor, one of them told me that Norris had infiltrated the manor undercover. I think he must have been the dishwasher/guy who was trapped in the cage in Luccia's lab. Side note: Did anyone chose to not let him out of the cage when he was trapped? Does that change anything at all?

Heurou

Something I really enjoyed was talking to the painter in termina that just showed us character portraits before and now they have a line warning us about evil Serge and showing us a new portrait for serve we haven’t seen yet looking like he is in a crazy outfit

Alex Smith

I don't know why, but the timing of Radius saying "Hey Garai..." then immediately stabbing him with the cartoonishly big Masamune is one of the funniest thing I've seen in a game in a while.

Brandon Knox

Towards the beginning of this segment, I did a subquest in the forest to retrieve a mushroom for a man, who upon receiving said mushroom, turns into a giant mushroom man called Funguy. Funguy was very upset at us for giving him this mushroom and joins our party, saying "I'll stalk you through the depths of hell!" I really like this idea of a character who has been wronged by someone and decides to go with them everywhere helping them anyway, angrily.

ian williams

Hey crew, i haven't been playing along but have been watching and just wanted to mention that Nikkis Song " Magical Dreamers ~ The Wind, Stars, and Waves" from Bens stream this week got so stuck in my head i fell into a hyper focus and learned to play it on guitar... anyway looking forward to getting to play it myself when i can afford to pick it up this payday! loving the dive so far.

Vilis

The Dead Sea portion has that early boss fight against Highwayman that made me think of a skeletal version of the half racecar guy you race in Chrono Trigger. Also the Dead Sea simultaneously reminded me of FF8 and FF13: 8 because there's a secret futuristic city you find, and 13 because of the section where you trek across a frozen seascape.

IanTClark

In Miguel’s Dead Sea monologue, he says, “History is composed of choices and divergences. Each choice you make creates a new world and brings forth a new future. But at the same time, you’re eliminating a different future with the choices you didn’t make. A future denied of all existence because of a change in the past…” I wasn’t expecting to learn about the Eternalism philosophy of time when playing this game, but hey - I’m here for it.

Seangocongo

Can anyone tell me what was up with the Tragedienne enemies in the Dead Sea? They look like marionettes from hell and they creep me out. Plus, when you begin a fight with them, they introduce themselves like beauty pageant contestants, except their talents are the elements they use.

william hittle

I've noticed a number of dialogue and other changes from the original game. Sprigg's accent filter isn't as bad as it was; particularly the line at Opassa beach about visiting Serge's mother, who was originally written as "movver". Janice's "build" in the status description screen was written as "plumpish" on playstation, which I remember thinking was amusing since most game women are over sexualized, but when I checked on Switch it now says "voluptuous", which ... sure. Miguel in the dead sea was missing an entire dialogue box, when he says "Either way, it is all part of the grand game of the gods... and 'goddesses'! " The goddesses part was dropped in the remake. I wonder if it was an extra line snuck in there by someone on the original team?

Jordan Brown

Can we talk about the false notion that "Chrono Cross isn't really a sequel to Trigger" stuff people say? Not only does it take place in the same world but we have direct ties with characters from Trigger as well as them actually showing up and directly talking to Serge and gang while blaming you for fucking up the timeline they created! We also have Lavos showing up in the computer in the Dead Sea! Just because it has different systems and a new team of protagonists doesn't disqualify it as a "true sequel".

Chase Klein

I unfortunately have to give up the 'coolest guy' title since I wasn't able to keep up with both saves this time around as this section is just too long, hopefully I didnt miss any branching paths. Anyway a few little Chrono Trigger References I noticed: - In Dead Sea there totally Jet Bike in the ruins right? - Also the Eneteron later on with the same 'you still as hungry as before' line is stright out of CT future timeline - When escaping from vipor manor you jump throught the stained glass window, which might be a nod to Marle's side quest from CT when she jumps through the stained glass window of the court room - The Earth dragon dungeon reminded me of the Sunken Desert dungeon as well.

Taylor Clark

I have listened to the last 2 parts of the deepest dive ( the most thorough discussion of chrono cross on the internet) but have only played 30 minutes of the game. Im not sure why but turn based combat outside of pokemon is just so uninteresting for me. Being about halfway through at this point does the combat get any better? Is it worth giving it another go if turn based combat has never been for me? Love Byron Taylor Clark

Austin smith

What's everyone else's favorite bad word to mutter when they miss back to back 92% accuracy attacks??

Brainfreeze

Did any of you manage to get the black relic without fighting the black dragon? If you avoid talking to Nikki on the SS Zelbess you'll never trigger the start of the "Save Marbule" quest. When you come back with Fargo in your party later, the Radical Dreamers ship will be gone and talking to Fargo will do nothing. This means you can't awaken the dragon to fight it (locking you out of Mikki, Fargo's level 7 tech, a saved Marbule, a star level, the opportunity to steal the black plate, and potentially even more later~~~). Instead, you can just walk up to the sleeping dragon and interact with him to get the black relic for free (I think you have to defeat the red, blue, yellow, and green dragons first though). I've also heard you get some unique interactions if you have a team of full demi-humans, but I haven't been able to verify that. This game still has some PS1-era rumors that aren't well documented.

Ethan Poe

Just gotta say the roulette game on the casino ship might be the most annoying gambling minigame ever. It's strange they made the dinosaur one easier by allowing slowing time but not this.

Uncle Longfellow

The sidequest to get Serge/Lynx's best weapon is phenomenal. I won't say specifics since I think a lot of folks might do it in part 4 of this, but it combines some of the more intriguing side plot stuff from Cross with the lore from Trigger in an insane boss fight (that can be cheesed if you're struggling!) and culminates in a reward that feels truly earned. If you haven't found it yet, I urge you to go to the tiny little no-named island just north of Mt. Pyre with puffs of smoke coming out of it in Home world. Get Karsh's lv.7 tech first and bring Riddel.

Zach Gileau

My favorite sequence in the game so far has to be the Dead Sea. Not only is it a fun nod to Chrono Trigger's future sequence, but its atmosphere is also incredibly haunting. It does a great job of showing you the stakes if you don't succeed by literally walking you through the ruins a future where mankind only exists only in the form of a lingering memory. It also does a great job of reinforcing the message that preventing catastrophe is a multigenerational effort. Chrono and friends can't do it all by themselves! I love how the game plays with the traditional 'hero saves the day' JRPG trope.

MickManga

Leah from Gaea's Navel clearly is a call back to Ayla from Chrono Trigger. There's a lot fan theories about the exact nature of her connection and where or when she is exactly from. But what I appreciate is in a game with little time travel they managed to bring in a dinosaurs and cavemen into the game. Gaea's Navel being separate from the rest of world almost feels like it is paying homage to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel The Lost World. I love the creativity on display, the developers had a lot of fun creating the world. Also as a random side note does anyone get Leon S. Kennedy vibes from Norris. I don't know if that was intentional or not but I sure do.

Rob Bridge

I love how existential this game continues to get. Whether it is the opening from Sprigg at the end of last week's discussion, to Harle's intro in the Temporal Vortex, to Miguel's Dead Sea dialogue. It's felt like the themes of identity and choice have been worked in from the beginning in a cascading way, which is a testament to how good the writing is for this game. I really am appreciating all the risks the team took, even if not all of them land well!

Jeorin

HELLO! I AM ZOAH! I'M A 28 YEAR OLD LIBRA AND I'M HERE TO PROTEST BEAUTY PAGENT SEXISM! This game is pretty weird at times, but I'm definitely enjoying the whacky cast of characters (and enemies) in this section. I'm rotating in new people far more often than in the first two parts. Which characters are your favorites, so far?

Colton Westbrooks

An optional quest that can be completed during part three (at a little unnamed island)is one of my favorite parts of the game. It is pivotal to resolving some of the best character side quests and does so in a satisfying way. This group of characters and their stories are some of my favorites so I always look forward to this part. It also provides a fun look at the fate of a certain important location in Home World. It is also one of the more positive story beats. I hesitate to say too much considering many may not have done it yet, but it also has great rewards and a brutal battle that is also very manageable if you know the boss tendencies.

Greg Spenser

So this rereleased game allows you to speed up and slow down gameplay, avoid random battles, auto-battle, and even offers to make battles a lot easier. But apparently using those features to cheese a mini-game for a single rare item is a bridge too far, as all those features are disabled while in that casino room. The official strategy guide even explains how to cheese the spinning compass game by pressing the pause button repeatedly, but this rerelease took away the pause game function here as well! Is this minigame really so important to block out any gaming of the system to win?

Hayden Berthelot

The music and tone for the Miguel boss fight really nailed the atmosphere of the moment for me. I didn't play Chrono Trigger, so I don't know the context behind most of what he talked about. But, it was general enough where I didn't really feel lost. Is Miguel from Chrono Trigger? It seemed like the game was implying that he was, but I've never seen/heard of him before in Chrono Trigger discussions I've come across in the past. He kinda looks like an older Crono to me.

DarkFishDays

In Another World if you jump down the hole in Hydra Marshes you’ll encounter De-Hydrate. A skeletal version of the Hydra. I immediately cast Holy Light and it faded away. That felt like a satisfying end after I unwillingly killed it to save Kid. …Though some of that impact was lost when I realized all my characters were sprained from the landing. (No Pentapus in Another World to soften the fall.)

ProcyonNumber6

After playing the first two parts of the deepest dive the game had yet to click with me almost at all. However, this past section was 1000% more enjoyable. The plot felt much more involved even though I was playing the game as a Starky/Norris buddy cop movie. Starky’s dialect juxtaposed with Norris who speaks clear as day always made me smile. Also shoutout to the Starky/Harle scene after the Harle decision where he learns about what tears are and then tries to understand why she’s sad.

Matt Corrado

There is a point in the story where you return to your home world as Lynx and discover that Dark Serge has been making a right ol' mess of things. You can stop in at Arni Village and find that everyone in town has taken refuge in Radius's home. Sadly though, there is a whole lot of "Tell Don't Show" going on here. Apparently, Dark Serge wants to "kill everyone on the island" according to the boy you save on the beach. Can you magine how much more impactful it would be to SEE this in action? I've said it before, but I can't help but think that this game's narrative would be so much better if Serge had dialogue with NPCs and his teammates or just an internal dialogue. Now, I love this game, really, and this section has had many emotional scenes but Serge's tale is falling flat for me at the moment. He feels like a vessel the plot revolves around and less a human being. Am I crazy?!

Creeeestheguy

My first play through I chose the path to have Glenn because he’s so overpowered, but this play through I did the opposite and I’m having fun with my squad. For the better portion of this segment I’m using Norris/Karsh and a little sprinkle of Radius. They feel like side characters that fit tighter into the quest of helping Serge regain his body. My one question is…. WHERE THE HELL IS GLENN?? He was nowhere to be found during the Dario/Mastermune quest. He’s nowhere to be found after the early Viper Manor part. Maybe I just missed him because the world is bigger than you think, but where is my pseudo frog man knight legend. WHERES MY BOY GLENN?!!

Shawn Mills

I really enjoyed this section but one thing that bothered me was how characters seemingly leave your party at random times. Even outside losing all of your characters from the first two parts, at one point Harle asked me if I prefer her or the world and when I said I wasn't sure she randomly left with a bunch of my best equipment and elements that I couldn't find a way to get back. I'm sorry I didn't think you were better than ever person on the planet Harle. Maybe if you met Starky you would realize other people can be cool too.

John Scovic

I'm extremely behind because it took Episode 1 of the Deepest Dive to convince me to try the game out! I was struggling with the Guile/Pierre/Nicky decision and went with Guile, then accidentally died during the rock climbing part and realized I hadn't saved in about an hour. Decided it was an act of god telling me that Guile was the wrong choice and went with Nicky when I redid the section. Have any of you gone back on decisions or changed your mind so far? Loving the game! Can't wait to catch up in 2024!

Joe Dean

Dear Dreamers, I've fallen behind, I wanted to share something from the last section. After I got Freaky Friday'ed and my best friends beat my butt the game cut immediately to the opening attract screen. I thought "That's neat the game is trying to fake me out, like losing that battle was bad." Then I realized the game had crashed so I had to refight Bunyip, Viper, and Lynx. Thank God for the fast forward and powered up mode cause otherwise I might've stopped there. Maybe I'll catch up, but I doubt it, Joe Dean

Clemens Zobel

If you take Home Van to Another Gogh, Gogh sees Van's piggy bank in his bag and praises his "son" for taking an interest in finances and gives him a bigger piggy bank. Van gives Gogh the cracked shell which was a gift from the deceased mom and Gogh reminisces of happier times. What are some neat character interactions you've seen between characters of alternate worlds? (It's been tough keeping straight who is from which world and what each versions back story is!)

Mi~Ke (ミ〜ケ)

[Part 1] The scene where Lynx-Serge is ambushed by Dark Serge and Kid on Hermit's Hideaway is particularly impactful. Despite being a silent protagonist, we are made aware that Serge cares deeply for Kid through a poignant montage, and that his heart is wounded that she has taken Dark Serge's side against him; then, we find out that Harle has feelings for Serge as well, but mysteriously vanishes from the party. Powerful stuff. [Part 2] Several characters join the party all at once when reuniting on the S.S. Invincible, and it's a bit overwhelming with so many amazing characters suddenly available: Riddel is arguably the best spellcaster in the game, Marcy is unexpectedly powerful overall, and ZOAH IS A HALF-NAKED HUNK OF MAN-MEAT. It's also notable that Pip is the only character to re-join Serge in Lynx's body if you recruited him, earlier on -- "it's the inside that counts," he says. D'aww. Shout out to my Pipsqueaks! He's BACK, baby!!

Dominic Cichocki

I think Chrono Cross is a prime example of why PS1 nostalgia exists. It feels so bold and open-ended in both its narrative/system complexity and its art direction that its a fantastic example of Square learning what the PS1 could do and applying that knowledge just before the dawn of the PS2. It's a game that just FEELS like there's a lot more going on under the hood than Kingdom Hearts and FFX. Not a statement on their quality - it just seems as if this was a more personal project capstoning one of Square's most prolific eras

Yarrow

Karsh's side mission is one of the best in any game ever that really fleshes out himself, Riddel, and Dario. You're met with a familiar tale of a love triangle that turns violent with the addition of the Masamune, which you think brings out Karsh's inner desire to be with Riddel. When you finally meet the other Dario in Home World, you find out it was Dario who got possessed and Karsh killed him to seal the power away, but Lynx used this opportunity to obtain the power for himself. This incredible tale tying in with the main narrative was a highlight of this section for me. If only it didn't end with one of the worst boss battles I have played.

Mai Sinclair

This is the section when we start to recruit some more of my favorite goofballs. Here I saved your father, ooos he is a mushroom now. Starky! Oh look a robot cyborg. I love it. I loved the chrono trigger references like Leene Square but when I played this 20 years ago I was still at this point under the impression these were just cute Easter eggs. More on that after the final section.

Matthew Clark

Dead Sea is the coolest environment in the whole game. The frozen waves and future ruins are so weird and mysterious, a bit scary yet somehow also sad. It really is a great payoff to all the rumors earlier in game and makes exploration a real treat.

Timothy Smith

Has anyone found the secret Bend of Time island? It doesn’t have a name pop up when you go next to it, but you can enter it if you choose too. I think it is between Marbule and Mount Pyre. Anyway the purpose of it is nothing story focused but you get to fight old enemies via portals for maybe elements or materials you need. Seems very inspired by the End of Time area in Chrono Cross

Tonytheswordsman

So is there time passing when you travel through dimensions? When we got back to our world, Leena is still watching her siblings swim and mom is telling us to go. So are we just heading back to that same moment ? Did our date even happen? Or is the day mundane enough that that’s every morning ?

Rigglz

So the second worst thing about this section of the game is looking at Lynx's character model as Serge the whole time. The first worst thing is when the game unequipped all your elements after each change! Body swapping Serge and Lynx was fine and makes sense why your elements wouldn't be equipped, but when you change back you are in your same body but a different form. I ran into battles completely unequipped to fight. This made me hate Lynx even more!!! Also someone in the first video described Chrono Cross as Suikoden with alternate dimensions. There actually is a Suikoden game that deals with alternate dimensions. Suikoden Tierkreis on the DS recruited characters from different dimensions. The game also was the only Suikoden game where the leader isn't a silent protagonist with a fully voiced cast!

Tonytheswordsman

So is Miguel and Leena descendants of Chrono and is this future a sign that trigger was for not ? Or just that even so it will always result this way as a loop.
