I salute you MinnMax crew! This week we saw the announcement of the delay of the Mario Movie, honestly when I read the beginning of the tweet "This is Miyamoto" I thought it was a retirement announcement. Nintendo has made no secret that they're keeping Miyamoto out of the spotlight because they don't want fans to be too atached when he inevitably leaves, this lead me to think: how would you go about comunicating the man's long awaited retirement? Is a message ok or would you do a farewell video like Reggie did?

I just beat Elden Ring over the weekend after something like 150 hours. [Pause for applause.] The game is a masterpiece, and easily one of my favorites of the last couple generations. But the length got me thinking: What is the reason for games like this being so long? There are no microtransactions and no seasonal events like there might be in an online service game, so it's not like they're trying to bait you into spending more money. There's no capitalism reason. And most of the complaints I hear about games like this, even masterpieces like Elden Ring, is that they're too long - or that they get tedious by the end. Why do studios feel incentivized to make 100+ hour games when they could probably get away with releasing games half that long and sell just as many copies or get just as much praise?

Howdy Partners. I’ve been recently playing through Chrono Cross for the deepest dive and it got me wondering. Who are your favourite party members from any games you’ve played?

Adam3

With all the cohorts on together, thought this would be a great time to get an answer to this question. Let’s say new show + really went off the rails next week and you will all be flying together to an isolated exotic island for a new show. Tragically the plane crashes on the island (rip to the pilot) but you all survive unscathed. Now my question is, what happens next? Who is leading the group in building shelter and finding food? Who is wandering into the unknown parts of the island, never to be seen again? And most importantly, who is plotting to eat who first? Thanks guys!! EDIT: Wait actually the most important question is how will you get off the island but the eating thing is funnier so focus on that

Hey everyone! What is the most unlikely (or likely) gaming crossover you would like to see most? Personally, I would love to see the Hunter from Bloodborne in the next Monster Hunter game. It would be amazing seeing a big monster getting staggered and critical hit by a Hunter.

Mike Lynch

What's the longest amount of time you've stayed awake? Why? (Personal best: 23 ¹/2 hours)

Nick Beattie

Hey, Ben and Cohorts! I recently rolled credits on Elden Ring, and I won’t spoil anything, but I will say that the music truly hits you in the feels. But after finishing the game, I started to think about the impact music can have on our experiences in video games; how our emotions can change based on the situation in which a song plays. So I wanted to ask y’all, has there ever been a time where a game’s music (or lack thereof) completely changed your thoughts on it?

I have a gaming sin to be judged. When I was either in late elementary or early junior high school, I was spending the night at the house of a former friend. I brought over F-Zero X on the N64 for us to play. I accidentally left it over there when I went back home the next day. Sometime later when I came back over to his house, I asked for the game back. My "friend" said no, and claimed that I traded the game for a crappy whoopie cushion he won with tickets at an arcade. I was enraged at this complete lie, especially as someone who has collected games nearly my whole life, and at the time had never even sold a game. So I plotted. Years later when I figured he would more than likely forget he even had the game, I planned to go over to his house when there was a get-together when enough people were there to distract him, and sneakily take back the game. I finally got my opportunity sometime in high school, and I've had F-Zero back in its rightful place with me since then. Yay or neigh to my gaming sin?

Hello coHORTS! (emphasis on second syllable) I feel bad, but I dropped out of the Chrono Cross Deepest Dive after the first week. I intend to eventually get back to it, but it's just hard to know when I'll have the time and inclination. My question is this, and JeffM is excused: what game do you feel the worst about not finishing? Either for its reputation in the culture or because a friend loves it?

Greeting cohorts, So my brother has been trying to get a PS5 recently and the current hoops retailers are making customers dive through seems to be getting out of hand. The only reliable ways to get a new console seems to be by signing up for various retailers payment programs. For instance, to be able to get a console from Walmart, you have to sign up for Walmart + ($12.95/mo). For GameStop you have to get a Pro membership ($14.99/yr). Or worst of all, for Best Buy you have to sign up for their Totaltech membership ($200/yr !!). This is all just for the ability to purchase a new console from these places. Then, places like GameStop force you to buy their console bundles too! Supposedly this is all to combat scalpers, but it feels more like retailers are taking advantage of supply shortages to drive up numbers for their silly programs and make customers fork over more cash. This is ridiculous right? Do you all have thoughts on the current console buying situation? Will we ever be able to just walk into a store and pick a modern game console off a shelf to buy?

Today after work I was playing Chrono Cross on my Switch when I noticed some mild pain in both of my knees. It was because I had been standing on my on me knees on our hardwood floors while resting my arms on the island in the middle of the kitchen. I thought to my self, "This is a weird way to play my Switch." What are some weird ways or places you've found yourself playing your favorite handheld device? (Phones do not count)

Ryan Lessard

Greet Cohorts! What is your favorite gaming advertisement? For me it always comes back to the Smash Bros commercial for N64. Perfect music choice (Happy Together by the Turtles) along with a ridiculous premise of people in Nintendo costumes beating the crap out of each other. Close second is David Lynches PS2 ads.

Hey, MinnMax crew! I have the week off, and it's been nice to be able to join live things like party chat that I normally miss. Thanks for all the content like New Show + and other great stuff. I don't always get to join, but it's fun when I do. In my free time this week, I've been doing some gardening and yard work. I've got a fence to put up, a garden to til, crops to plant, and a veritable mini-Stardew Valley to create. If y'all were making your ideal garden, what would you plant? (My wife and I are making sure to plant a pumpkin patch for our nieces and nephews to pick "pumperkins" when Halloween rolls around, and I of course demand a strawberry patch, cause they're delicious.)

Jeorin

Hello everyone, When you finish a game, do you sometimes feel 'post-game sadness'? Knowing that you are done with the experience, and that, even if you play it again, it won't be the same as your first time playing.

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and Friennds! What’s your experience with Deja Vu? If you recognize something and get Deja vu do you continue doing what you’ve “seen” before? Or do you change the outcome to prove you still have control of your life?

Jason Wojnar

Have you ever been told a secret by someone you really wish they hadn't told you or vice versa where somebody said "we really wish you hadn't told me that after you told them your secret"? You don't have to reveal what the secret was, but have you kept the secret to this day?

Ben Cassell

Hey Ben and the 'horts. Super long time listener and absolutely first time writer (the party chat with Tack made me a patreon supporter!) My question is have any of you internally heard game soundtrack music while experiencing real world stuff? I recently had a bizarre and adrenaline pumping experience of chasing and eventually apprehending a person that I had seen assaulting physical someone, I had to basically chase the guy for 25 mins at full pelt while on the phone to the police (he also came at me). For almost the entire time I had the alternative theme for God of War 2018 in my head (basically an up tempo version of the the main theme). I know this is an extreme example but I found it so interesting that I had this song so vividly in my head during this experience, and actually gave me energy to keep chasing. Anyway keep up the superb work. Ben, Cardiff, Wales

Why is it Square games like Kingdom Hearts are constantly belittled for their story or art design, or simply dismissed because they're either involved with Disney or seem to be "anime?" I feel like it's an easy target that's super reductive and way past its use. Yes KH's story can be silly, but so can Metal Gear's - what makes one brand of it so much more appealing than the other? Because one tries to appeal to adults into spy thrillers? Sure, a name like Infinite Undiscovery is weird, but so is something like Destiny 2 or Gears of War. And sure, a game like KH or The World Ends With You seems to indulge in Tetsuya Nomura's interest in interesting, colorful, zipperific fashion. But who's going at the character designer or art director of Limbo and Inside for their incredibly consistent palette? It just feels a bit too boring to make fun of Japanese games for the same old stuff. Some people get so strong about it, it starts to feel xenophobic.

Noah Allison

Hello Cohort Crew! Despite bouncing off of FromSoftware games in the past, the discussion around Elden Ring on the podcast convinced me to try it. It turns out it is great! However, now that I’m invested, I’ve had racing thoughts at night about everything I need to/can do in Elden Ring. These thoughts prevented me from getting quality sleep (I don’t normally react this way to games). This got me thinking, has your experience with a game ever had negative side-effects outside of the game? I admit it was likely my fault for binging the game this last weekend, but that’s how the game made me feel like playing it. If binging a FromSoftware game is a gaming sin, then I imagine there are many who are guilty among us.

Hello MinnMaxers! A simple question this week: What came first? The YouTube algorithms demanding that creators make video thumbnails where they're making shocked, bug-eyed faces, or people making those faces in an effort to stand out, leading YouTube to surface videos with that style of thumbnail? Tacky clickbait-y articles / listicles / YouTube provocative titles have been on my mind recently. (side note - I think ya'll do a great job at avoiding this stuff)

Kevin Kuper

Hello cohorts! All 3 consoles have essentially the same controller button layout with minor differences, which is great for multiplatform games but I feel like you cannot have unique experiences like the crank from the play date. What is a change to the standard controller or attachment you would want to see in the future that would break away from the norm? Thanks!

Tokyo Game Life

Hi MinnMax, You have to change your first or last name to the name of an animal. What is your new name?

Ryan Butler

Hey everyone, What are some of the funniest things you’ve mispronounced in a video game. How did you figure out you were saying it wrong? Do you still say it wrong or are you right and everyone else is wrong? For me it was the Deku Tree in Ocarina of Time. I saw the Star Wars prequels before playing it so I pronounced it Dooku as in Count Dooku. It was a year or so later when I heard it right and I felt like such a fool for thinking they were the same.

Tim Mattonen

Hiya, Michael Schurr calls you and says, “I want to do a video game adaptation for my next television series. I want it to be a comedy, and not necessarily follow/be about the protagonist. So basically a comedy that takes place in a video game setting that can expand a group of side characters”. What’s your elevator pitch? Example: The Dueling Peaks Staple. A mockumentary that follows the workers and travelers that come to and through the Dueling Peaks Staple from BOTW. You have Beedle who sells his wares, the guy who always paints, etc. Are they constantly worried about Calamity Ganon threatening to ravage the world again? Why yes.. But they always manage to do their daily jobs. Sorry for the length of this, Cheers

Gnoale

One day, I had a line of ants marching along a doorway in my house. So I put an ant trap in there path and watched their numbers dwindle of the course of several days. I don't know if it was the fact that I had no choice but to look at it each day (since I walk through that doorway every day), but I had a strong realization that I was playing Tower Defense in real life! This was quite a surprise, so I was wondering if anyone else had a similar surprise revelation of seeing an unexpected game genre or mechanic being performed in the real word.

Interrotta

Hello every cohort of Minnmax! Do you all keep up with bands or artists you listened to in high school? Or do you just listen to their old stuff?

WavingWorld

Hey Ben and the Computer Loving Cohorts!! I've been staying in hotels lately for work. Got any hotel tips that you've picked up from traveling so much?

Alex Smith

Hey Podcast Pals, Have you ever caught yourself talking about videogames in public setting and thought, "I must sound like a complete psychopath..." If so, does any particular incident still haunt you or stand out? Maybe an awkward side-eye while describing Doom Eternal's satisfying Glory Kills? Or a polite nod, followed by the person slowly backing out of the room after you show them the notepad you used to sketch out solutions to a puzzle in The Witness? Thanks!

Habeeb Adejare

Hello Crew, I recently just got through with Eidos’s Guardians of the Galaxy game and (Spoilers) there’s a part after the credits that seems to heavily reference a certain applause scene in Neon Genesis Evangelion. I tried to look this up and see if I’m right but I’ve found no mention of it, but have found zero mention of it. Am I going wrong and just making a wrong connection? Also have any of the panel run into any Easter eggs that they were sure were Easter eggs only to be proven wrong?

Tanner Methven

Hey Minnmaxers, I’m looking at some of my criterion collection blu rays and wondering, if you could pick any game to get the equivalent of the criterion treatment (full restoration, multiple commentaries, new interviews with the makers, new critical essays, unused content, a collection of the marketing materials, etc.) what game would you choose? Like even more than the typical remaster/retro collection, what game would you want to go ALL OUT?

Victor Pham

How much of a platform should you give to those with opposing viewpoints, especially when those viewpoints are harmful?

Andrew Molnar

I've been watching Star Trek Discovery lately, and it got me thinking: do you believe there are extra terrestrials out there? If so, in what form?

Erin T.

Hey “Oops, All Cohorts” Gang! You can choose any game studio to release their own dedicated console: it can take any form - a traditional console, a handheld, whatever you want, but it can ONLY play past and future games from that studio. Who’s your pick and what’s the console like?

ryan

m8s, what's the bravest thing you think you have done? also minnmax is great and i hope It lasts forever.

Stephen Woodson

Inspired by on old betterquest where Jeff Cork said he would get drunk in his car, lay into the horn, and flip off the police... If you wanted to go to prison, what would the best (nonviolent!) way to do it? Asking for a friend, of course. Cheers!

PhillyYeetSteak

Hello max minnmax! Is there a certain kind of media (games, movies, books, etc) for which your tastes are especially "smart" or intellectual? Or especially dumb? For me personally, i think my favorite movies are "dumber" than my favorite games.

PoorAndCurly

Hey Minnmax! Whay game makes you feel super smart? Or conversely which games bring out the dumb? I recently started the Hitman trilogy and feel real dumb bumbling my way through each beautiful level.

Could_be_a_Librarian

When I was a kid, I had just reached the last level of Sonic Spinball on our Sega Genesis. Halfway through the level my mom unplugged the console and told my brother and I that it was time to stop playing. Do you have any experiences with losing a lot of progress on a game, back when video games didn't have saves?

MarriottPlayer

Hey Co-Horts, Did you all ever have a Game Boy Camera? I got one a few years ago and think it’s really neat. What are some of your fave handheld accessories? Best,

Kyle Silva

Hey MinnMax, please cleanse me of my gaming sins. Back in January 2017, I waited 4+ hours in front of GameStop to pre-order a Switch and Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Collector’s Edition. It was an incredibly cold morning and I was alone in this line for 2 or so hours at this point. I decided to walk down the plaza to warm up in the gym’s sauna for 10 minutes, so I could feel my toes again. When I walked back to wait at GameStop, I was not alone as a couple of guys came to wait for Switch pre-orders. Even though I came back into the line later, the two were very understanding and let me back in the front of the line. Come the moment GameStop opens I make my order for the Switch and the Collector’s Edition of Zelda. Before I leave, I can hear the nice guy behind me try to place an order for BOTW collector’s edition, only to be told that they’re out of pre-order copies of it. I left as though I heard nothing and i would wound up picking up the collector’s edition at launch. Should I have given my copy away to the guys that let me cut them in line? Is this sin to heinous to be forgiven?

Andreas Jensen

What's the deal with concept art? Do you enjoy it as a reward in games? I don't think it feels like a reward at all. What do you think is the best kind of non gameplay related rewards in games?

Solo

What is MP? What does it stand for? (Mana or Magic?) Where is it stored in the body? (An existing or new organ?) What uses a small or big amount? Bye.

Eric Merrill

Since it’s backlog season I’ve been playing some old deepest dives. I played Edith Finch and am currently working through Chrono Trigger. I’ve left new comments on the respective DD comment threads. Am I just to late? Do you ever see MinnMax revisiting any previous DD games? Regardless I’ll continue to play, comment, and listen along! Much love

Mark Polley

I don't think Elden Ring is for me, and I'm ashamed about it. I think part of it might be because I can't commit to play sessions longer than an hour every few days, so remembering my way around the large dungeons is a nightmare. I loved BoTW and its open exploration, but I think that game tended to be a lot more bite sized - allowing me to pick it up and do something small when I can. I also enjoyed its sense of fun and catchy music to give me a sense of place. I guess I have 2 questions, is this a valid take? I know you guys all love this game, do you know anyone who doesn't? Also - do you have any games that you forced yourself to play, even though you weren't feeling it personally?

OneArmedWolf

Question for Leo specifically, but anyone that struggles in a similar way is free to chime in! How does his ADHD affect his gaming habits? I was diagnosed with adhd a few years ago and with it came a retrospective understanding of many of the reasons I struggled in life without fully understanding why. More relevantly, it explained some quirks with my relationship with gaming and certain habits I think are heavily influenced by this condition. To cut a long story short, one of these ways is that I find it extraordinarily hard to play the majority of games past the first 10 minutes. However when I find a game that does manage to grab my attention, I find it extraordinarily hard to play anything else, to the point of feeling burnt out with the game yet unable to put it down because it’s one of those rare things that has managed to grip me. This goes for film, music, any form of art, really. I’m just curious, if Leo even wants to share this personal info, about how Leo thinks his ADHD affects his relationship with gaming? Does it make things harder? Easier? A bit of both? His video on his journey with ADHD is a bit of a touchstone for me when it comes to understanding my own condition, so I'd love his insight on this if he's willing to share :)

Ben used to piece together a person's life from old memory cards. So I thought I would propose a spiritual successor of sorts. Here's the game. Writers list their 10 favorite games in alphabetical order. And it's up to the cast to interpret what these games say about the writer. So here are my top 10 games Banjo Kazooie Chrono Cross Donkey Kong Country Etrian Odyssey 4 Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 1 Kirby Super Star Pokemon LeafGreen Pokemon Black 2 Stardew Valley Tetris Attack Here's my bonus fact according to my game log I have seen credits roll on over 400 games.

Hunter Blessing

Hi MinnMax! A few podcasts ago you asked if anyone runs while listening to the minnmax show, and I actually do enjoy listening on my long run days. I highly recommend it to fellow runners. My question is this: if you held up pictures of Kirby, Jigglypuff, and the pink ghost from Pacman to the general public, what percentage of people do you think could actually identify which one is Kirby? As a bonus question, what percentage of people think Kirby is a Pokemon? Thanks for all the great podcasts!

Hootz

Hi gang! Fairly recently, Hanson mentioned that an Old Testament Lego set was a gold mine waiting to happen. When do you think an Old Testament video game is going to hit the market? In the same vein, what are your thoughts on the upcoming VR title, I Am Jesus Christ? Is this the game that's going to bring VR even deeper into the main stream? Thanks for being awesome!

Catpurrnicus

Do you think if you were transported 200 years into the past that you'd have the ability to be successful? I was thinking about this the other day, and it's more likely I'd me burned as a witch. I don't know how to create modern technology, I can't play an instrument, my current profession relies on modern devices, my knowledge of history isn't that great so I'm not stopping assassination. So in 1820, what's you job or how are you making money?

FrostedSherbert

Hey MinnMax! I was wondering what your thoughts on the shorter, condensed and linear experience is versus the big, endless, open world experience and why the latter has become such a huge focus? It seems like anytime I talk to my friends I'm the only one who prefers the shorter 6-10 hour experiences that are more focused whereas everyone else prefers the massive worlds & never ending roguelike games. They all seem the same to me! As a bonus question, what's the most unique game you have played?
