Hey Benn and Friennds, Not so much a game as a brief survey. Which of the following characters are your favorite from each developer? We're talking FAVORITE, not "who would win in a fight" or "who is most successful". Nintendo- Donkey Kong, Link or Mario Insomniac- Rachet, Spyro or Sgt. Nathan Hale (Resistance) Ubisoft- Sam Fisher, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, Rayman Naughty Dog- Crash Bandicoot, Nathan Drake, Jak Sucker Punch- Sly Cooper, Sly Cooper or Sly Cooper? - Sly Cooper, Cole MacGrath or Jin Sakai As always keep up the great content!

Hey Ben and the crew, With the discussion of ports this week, I decided to look into the port of The Force Unleashed to the switch that just released. Only to be surprised they just ported the Wii version and not the better PS3/360 one! Do we chalk this up to it being easier to port the Wii version, or just a weird Nintendo decision? Thanks!

MickManga

I still haven't been able to acquire a next gen console. :/ thankfully both Halo Infinite and Horizon Forbidden West were available on the Xbox one and ps4. So I have lucked out so far. But it doesn't feel like the next gen hasn't begun yet. Though with Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order 2 being next gen only it looks like I might end up paying more the msrp at this rate to get a next gen console. XD here's hoping things get better.

Ahoy Ben and team! My wife and I recently closed on our first house and are in the process of fixing some things and moving in, and it’s all got me thinking: which Zelda item would be the most useful for moving other than the gauntlets that give you extra strength, because that’s too obvious.

Tim Britvich

Hello Benjo and the Kazooies, do you recall any instances of playing the same game on different gaming systems and having your gaming experience vastly improve or vice versa, when playing on a different console?

Vilis

I keep holding out hope that Sony is going to come swinging back for a win, but Xbox is so willing to work this Game Pass angle it's difficult to compete. Microsoft has a nearly bottomless money box to pull from due to all the software sales for Windows and Office they do, so Xbox can operate at a loss and still be fine (I dunno if they are, just that they can). I don't think Sony has quite that same level of economic freedom to just throw money at the problem. I think Xbox has learned from what made Sony so popular last cycle, upped the ante, and Sony is staring at their hand wondering if they can even afford to call, let alone raise. Meanwhile Nintendo is over in the corner doing its own thing as always, and the PC bros are shelling out their annual offering to the graphics card gods to maintain their superiority. To answer the question though: No, I'm not switching off of Sony. Maybe I'll change my tune in 2023, but I believe we're going to start seeing stories before too long of devs feeling ill-used by Game Pass and Sony will come around and try to spin like they've supported the developers all along. That or Game Pass will see some of the same issues Netflix is having right now: Password sharing, rare hikes, etc. and people will cool on it. That said, I also haven't had a Playstation Plus account active for several months because their free games have been very "eh..." and the games I want I buy, and they take me long enough that I don't have time for anything else really what with D&D, work, and keeping up with TV shows and movies and such. I've played my Switch more than anything in the past month, though that was mostly due to the Chrono Cross deep dive, but even without that I'd be playing Triangle Strategy.

For me personally, the PS5 was a no brainer. I very rarely dabble in multiplayer, so the exclusives go a long way with me. I know people are split on the controller, but the dual sense is an all time great in my opinion. The adaptive triggers are neat for feedback sure, but the way Returnal used the feature to essentially split the trigger into two buttons is just too cool. Sony Pony 4 Lyfe

My commentary on the console war issue was very long, so I'll keep my relevant question brief: What's your $$$ cut-off for Game Pass or whatever Sony is offering in competition? At what point do you say "Naw" and go back to buying games and subscribe to nothing?

RiskyChrisP

Hi everybody! Hypothetically speaking, what IPs do you think Microsoft or Sony own that would be better off under their competitor’s umbrella? For example, I’d love to see what Sucker Punch could do with a modern Crackdown game, or see what Rare could do with the Little Big Planet franchise.

Mathias Jülich

Hey cohorts, We all know, crying can be a very healthy and helpful thing but let’s face it: sometimes we cry for stupid reasons: what was the most stupid thing you ever cried over (gaming-related or otherwise)? Liebe Grüße from Berlin, Germany Mathias

Ahoy cohorts, I’ve been watching Leo’s new video about raging in video games and felt as through I cannot relate to much of it as I mostly play single player games or co-op. Do you feel as though you rage or get “tilted” at all in games, and if so is it mainly or exclusively online games? Any memorable times you did get angry at a game?

Boondock-Bandit

Merry MinnMax Show everyone! I can't say I partake in the "console wars" but I've had Playstation(s) 1-5 mostly because I learned to play video games with the Playstation controller and never wanted to learn another layout (the only exception being Nintendo Wii/ Switch). I loved the first Crackdown and that was probably the closest I was to getting an Xbox 360, but I would just play it at a friend's house. Oh, yeah need a question in there somewhere... What's a small console feature that you didn't notice or care about before that you ended up loving? The PS5's haptic feedback has honestly been one of my favorite features - it was certainly hyped up but that extra tactile response makes every game feel unique (Gran Turismo especially - some cars have a really sudden shift response and makes it feel much more intense). Thanks all!

DarkFishDays

What’s a mundane task that you feel a strong sense of accomplishment whenever you do it? Anyone else feel really good about cleaning dishes right after a meal?

Nathan Schultz

Console shift: I’ve been a Nintendo fanboy my entire life, but I’m realizing that they just don’t cater to me like they used to. I bought a PS5 this generation and between new games and the PS4 back catalog it’s been a delight. It’s nice that they prioritize graphical power. I’ve gotten to the point where my time is the limiting factor instead of money, so I should only be playing the best games. I prefer single player games and a lot of those are on PlayStation. Which console do each of you find yourself gravitating to the most? Have you ever shifted platforms because you changed instead of the platforms changing? PS Please add JeffM completing Red Dead II as a Patreon goal. I wont find happiness in this life until JeffM finishes his favorite game.

Doctorok

While I've always been pretty neutral on the console wars, I currently own a PS5, Switch, and PC--not really seeing the need for Xbox when all of their exclusives are available on PC. However, rumors of an Xbox GamePass dongle make me wonder if I might finally, technically make an Xbox purchase. Are any of you interested in this potential GamePass streaming stick?

Tommy Carver-Chaplin

Hi cohorts. Is there any one game that you consider crucial to the survivability or success of a console in the console wars? An obvious one would be Halo being crucial to Xbox surviving into the 360 generation, and part of me thinks Last of Us defined the PS4 as a generation leader.

NotSkyWalker

Hello MinnMax Crew, In regards to the ol “console wars,” I believe the winner has never been more clear: It’s us! Steam has entered the console market and Xbox is seemingly back to being as competitive as it was in the 360 days. Oh, and gamepass? Truly a revelation that has allowed me, a broke medical student, to more easily explore games of all shapes and sizes. The PS5 is carrying the monumental momentum of the PS4, and the Nintendo Switch flirts with breaking a record every week. I think this is an ideal scenario - all those big corporations are having to compete for our hard earned cash, so I suspect in the end we will be rewarded with a larger breadth of quality video games. All the players are vying with each other to win over Indie devs, funding and marketing projects left and right… then of course we have the Pokémons, God of Wars, and Starfields to look forward to this year… it’s all shaping up to be a beautiful generation. Cheers, Aidan

Kees ('Case') Mulder

Hey cohorts! In newest video by a great YouTuber called Suckerpinch, he describes Tetris as an 'inventory management survival horror game' and I love this description so much I can't get it out of my head. So I came up with a few more bad but correct descriptions of classic games. Can you guess the game? - A biblical point-and-click space opera game. (Doom) - A suburban tycoon game (The Sims) - The halloween-themed collectathon (Pac-Man) - A fantasy animal husbandry simulation game (Pokémon)

I was a day one adopter of the PS5 and I use it daily. While I'd like to get a Series X, too, the truth is Microsoft still hasn't given me, as a One S owner, a real reason to upgrade yet. I played through both Halo Infinite and Psychonauts 2 last year on my One S and still use it for playing older titles, which it does exceptionally well. But with literally everything on Game Pass still available for last gen, I can't imagine buying into a Series X until it starts offering experiences I can't get anywhere else. And, amazingly, a year and a half into this gen, I still see nothing on the horizon that can get me on board, which seems like a massive ball dropped.

Hello gang! My question is for any and all FF7 fans (Hanson help me out here). I recently started my playthrough of Trek to Yomi. So far I've really been enjoying the art style and art direction. Everything else..meh 7.5/10. Anyway, Trek to Yomi has some amazing 2.5D/3D level design that strangely brought me back to FF7 Original. The finding of hidden rooms that blooms into a whole new little area, the intimacy of going through a huge area just to be thrown a small room zoomed in to blow up the screen when discovering secrets. The mostly Fixed Camera angles. In another hypothetical world (where FF7R isn't as good as it is) would you folks like to see a Trek to Yomi style FF7 with Turn Based combat brought back. Just a fun thought experiment. Cheers!

Luca Alberti

Hello MinnMax squad, the Indie World announcement got me thinking: why don't all publishers invest in Indie studios? Platform Holders already do to an extent with partnerships to fill in the gaps of their lineup, but with success stories like the EA Originals why don't we see Ubisoft dust off stuff like UbiArt or Activision pursuing a talented indie team? The RoI on indie games can be massive and these giants could fund dozens of projects with what to them is just pocket change, so why don't they all do it? Is it a lack of staff that would be required to oversee these projects for QA purposes or are they just blinded by the repetition of the A letter?

bizkiut (Nick S.)

Hey CLCs, Working at a certain game selling store that shall not be named for 6 years before finally turning in my keys last year, I was always asked the question "which console is better, Xbox or PlayStation and which should I buy?" The way I usually answered was, do you have friends that play and what do they have? That is usually my factor as to what I want to buy since I really like playing games with friends (but still love a great big single player experience as well). What's your deciding factor(s) for the console you choose? Thanks! Nick S.

henrik mortensen

Hallo. Everything has to end right? So what will the last Mario game be? There has to be one final game, right? Or the last Zelda game? Answer me!! Hate your show.

Branden Murphy

Hey everybody! So we all know that Elden Ring was only good because of George R.R. Martin's involvement. Don't worry, I'm kidding. But, this did get me thinking that more authors should partner with game developers in the future. Like, what if Martin had a bigger influence on the lore and story of a game? So my question is: what author (or screenwriter) and game developer partnership would you like to see in the future? Mine would be for Brandon Sanderson (author of Mistborn and the Stormlight Archive) to work on a Final Fantasy game or Square Enix RPG.

CANAS1AN

Hello Computer Loving Cohorts, Two things 1) PC gaming is never really considered in the console wars despite some of the most played games in the world being PC only (Valorant, League of Legends etc.) 2) My personal goal (not sure if betterquest) is to start engaging with the MM community more, including submitting questions. The MM twitter has been very responsive to my questions and the discord as well. I played some Valorant last night with ppl from MM after talking in the Community Gaming channel. Thanks for all the great content!

Pelicanman

I know this crew isn’t big into graphics in games, but do you have a pet peeve in graphics that you just can’t stand? For me, bad anti-aliasing, with all those jaggies dancing around, is a real eyesore and very distracting. This makes it hard to go back to a lot of 360/PS3-era games, where it was Jaggies City.

Malcolm Holliday

I tend to jump all over the place with my gaming. I have a PS5, Switch and my PC is pretty competent. At the beginning of the year I actually had time to put into my PS5 gaming with both Sifu and Elden Ring. I was worried that my PS5 would just get dusty lol, but I put in significant amount of time so far this year. Funnily the Chrono Cross Deepest Dive got me to use my Switch more and I was able to hit some of my backlog. My PC tends to be used for podcast games like Peglin. My work schedule is pretty packed so it's tough to get consistent gaming in. I tend to stick to podcast games because I feel less guilty playing them for some reason. My question of the week, Do you think one day within in the future we'll just have one universal gaming platform? Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft and 3rd parties all purchasable through one storefront.

TheUnchartedWolf

Hey cohorts, simple question this week. Have you ever been turned off of a game or show because it's too popular?

Troy Ellison

Hey cohorts, I've been having a bad streak of not waking up early enough during the week and have been looking for ways to help myself get out of bed in the morning. On thing I've been thinking of trying is moving my switch near my bed to flip on a game to keep me engaged from going back to sleep. Is this healthy? Have you ever used games as a way to help you facilitate other menial tasks?

RickyWinterborn

Pretend the Sega Dreamcast was a huge hit and was the top selling console of the ps2 gen. now fast forward to today, and describe Sega's place in the modern game industry. Maybe the UMD gimmick evolved into a wii U/switch type scenario and beat Nintendo to the punch?

Ray Sweat

Hey guys. My daughter is four and loves everything Sonic right now, which is great for a Genesis baby like me. She's currently getting her enjoyment out of watching a YouTube playthrough of Sonic Adventure 2. Watching this I realized how fun that Dreamcast/GameCube generation was. Looking back it was probably my favorite because of how video-gamey everything used to be. I miss cutscenes where the characters looked like wax figures and we thought it was realistic. Anyways, what's your favorite generation and why?

Mason Parker

Better quest goal here! Over the past two years I've been writing a fantasy novel. I finished it last year but decided to shelf it after not thinking it was good enough. I have come back to it and decided to self publish through Amazon. I'm going to go through it one last time to tighten it up. My actual goal is this: To definitively finish it to the best of my ability, and publish it to the Amazon Kindle store before the end of June. It's always been a dream of mine to be a writer. I want to stick to it, so this is me putting it out there. I'll update when I publish it! Keep it up, love you guys and all you do. Mason

Hi Everyone, The announcement of the new Sonic Origins collection has made me realize that I am a total sucker for any kind of remixed content for old games. The screenshot of the Missions feature has gotten me excited enough to spend 50$ on 4 games that I could easily play on an emulator. My question is, what is your perfect version of one of these types of collections in terms of new content?

Tanner Methven

Hey Minnmax Crew, Whenever a new console war began we’d often hear some form of the mantra “software sells hardware.” Looking back at some of the console wars past, what would you say were the big titles that ended up shaping the history of games through their impact on hardware sales? You can also include timed exclusivity deals, because in my opinion people don’t give enough weight to Street Fighter 2 being exclusive to the SNES for a full year before hitting Genesis.

Bryce Blackmore

What do you think is enough in the real world to lose 1 HP? Smelling a nasty fart? Someone poking you? Biting your tongue?

Andrew Niesley

I want to throw my support behind Ben for the general disliking of subtitled content. I am absolutely of the text generation of RPGs, but I never use subs if I can avoid it. I don't want to read lines before I hear them and I feel like the words draw attention away from quality animation or acting. Apparently all of my friends are deaf because they make fun of me for this every movie night. Also, what is the oldest game that you can still enjoy playing today?

Nick from Atlanta

Hello Cohorts! I know this episode is focused on this generation, but I'd love some context for your own journeys to this point. What has been your primary console each generation, going back as far as the first one you played enough to consider your primary? Personally, my journey started with Generation 4 and the SNES, moving to N64, then GameCube. Starting with 7th Gen, I've considered the Xbox family systems, with Xbox 360 being the first home console I bought with my own money, then moving to Xbox One and now Xbox Series X. Thanks, Nick from Atlanta

Joe Dean

Hey CLCs, In the Chibi Robo Playthrough Ben asked where the overconfident but not really effective soldier character comes from -ala Buzz Lightyear, Captain Quark etc. While it may not be the origins one of the earliest examples I can think of is IL CAPITANO from Commedia Dell'Arte. Il Capitano is a stock character in the masked improv comedy of Commedia Dell'Arte traditionally portrayed by an actor wearing a mask with a big nose. He is boisterous and full of bravado, but is actually a coward or a buffoon. According to a cursory Google Il Capitano is inspired by Plautus's Miles Gloriosus and Terence's Eunuchus. I hope you find that interesting. Best Wishes, Joe Dean

Shawn Mills

I was talking with a younger coworker about Elden Ring and he mentioned one of the enemies looks like Pyramid Head. I replied, "oh I didn't know you liked Silent Hill." to which he said "What's Silent Hill? Pyramid Head is from Dead by Daylight." My question is when is the last time you had a conversation with someone that made you feel really old.

Shimmy Neutron

About this console war, my question is more logistical about gamepass and other subscription services. Do we not hit a tipping point where we have too many of these things and don't wanna pay for them anymore. All of them are raising prices or have tried recently, that'll more than likely continue. And finally although Microsoft has the fiscal capacity to take a loss while they get everyone on board how is it sustainable at that price if they wanna make games on the scale and size of Sony. Will it be a Halo/forza style model where yes you get large chunks of content for free but are swimming in micro transactions? Can they give a spider-man/last of us/God of War style game away for free? Will the developers get enough to make that worth it? For how long can Microsoft do this without charging people more. I don't deny its a great deal for everything indie/double A Xbox has access too at the moment. When they start to swing big with games single player transaction free will it continue to work? Will they try an add more revenue streams to those single player titles? Will the integrity of the game in question hold up? There's many variables in this subscriptions business, how do you all see this playing out over years?

Mark Polley

Is console war still the right way of phrasing it? We are decades away from "Sega does what Nintendon't" and "BLAST PROCESSING" etc. Does this impact the way we, as consumers think about each console? Are kids still arguing in the schoolyard which console is better? It seems to me like the £70 marquee games wouldn't illicit the same debates as one console having street fighter, and the other mortal kombat etc.

Tristan

G'day all, What do you feel is the most satisfying thing about playing games? For me back in the 90s when playing JRPGs the most satisfying part of gaming was arriving at a new town, getting upgraded gear, meeting new NPCs and maybe getting a new team member - always so satisfying! These days I think I get the most satisfaction from creating an awesome build, generally in rogue-likes (Dead Cells, Hades, Slay the Spire), when you manage to create a build that just clicks so perfectly together, it's very rewarding. Other ideas for discussion: Solving a puzzle Beating a hard boss Leveling up (numbers going up or getting a new ability) Big story moments Getting a kill in competitive online gaming (or winning a Battle Royale) Playing with friends Cheers Ben

AnAttackCorgi

Hello MinnMaxers! What used to be a popular gaming trend that everyone just forgot about? Motion gaming for example, or Xbox/Sony avatars for another. Abrams You So Much!

Phil McKrackup

Hey MinnMax! So when i was a kid I would play a nascar game on ps2. I don’t know what the game was called. But I would start the race and go the wrong way on the track. I loved trying to cause the biggest wreck I could by slamming into all of the cars head on. Am I sick for doing this? Did anyone do anything like this?

jkk411

I was listening to some folks on another podcast recently saying with a fair amount of confidence that Microsoft and Sony would not bother with releasing a Switch competitor. My question is...why shouldn't they? It seems to me Microsoft in particular could market a really compelling product in this space. Imagine a "Series P" in 2-3 years that essentially runs the Series S version of Xbox games in a handheld form factor. Seeing what Steam Deck is doing at a $399 price point in 2022, it's not hard to imagine this being plausible. I know they have been pushing Cloud as the solution here, but I think there's room in the marketplace for something like this as another option and Microsoft has been churning out tablets forever now, so how hard would it be to slap some joysticks and buttons on one and brand it as an Xbox device? People have been talking about brining Game Pass to the Switch, but what if they just did it the other way around?

Erik Lawther

Hi Cohorts, I've recently been trying to get over a mental block I have with JRPG's. I'm big into anime and ffxiv and kingdom hearts 2 are both in my top 10 games but for some reason I always bounce off a more traditional turn based jrpg before i can sink into the systems. Are there any game genres that you feel like you should really enjoy but for some reason you bounce off of?

LlorchDurden

I don't wanna throw the metaquestion but , is there even a Console War anymore? I think the whole industry shifted to making games available on as many systems as possible , since it's not profitable to locked them into one system. Games get on Early Access on Steam , then on console then on Switch or the other way around, Sony publishes on steam , I play Forza Horizon 5 on my phone.... and I love not missing out cause I don't own that system!

Ben Cassell

Hey all, Is there any game soundtrack that (1) you liked more than playing the game itself and (2) stayed in your head waaay beyond what can be considered a reasonable amount of time. Follow up question, have you ever had to try and explain what and where a game soundtrack comes from? Examples for me include The Last of Us, a game I loved but havent played since 2013, yet the soundtrack is still with me. I also had to explain where the Hades soundtrack came from to friends at my birthday party recently, as they aren't really gamers, I got some solid looks of confusion

Cody Hester

Dear Ben and the so and sos, have you played Rifftrax The Game? What the Dub was on Ben's top list last year and MST 3K was mentioned on the podcast a while back, so this game seems like a perfect match. My wife and I played a few rounds and it seems cool so far. Thanks and keep on keepin' on!

PoorAndCurly

Hey Minnmax! GamePass was pretty much the deciding factor that I would pick up a Series X first. I'd like to eventually get the PS5 for exclusives a few years down the road but I'm happy with my choice. What feature or reason besides exclusive games would sway you towards one console or another?
