Hi Everyone, What's a game mechanic which you like that most people tend to not enjoy? Personally, I really like inventory management and loot. I think my brain is broken.

Christopher C. Castillo

If we're talking E3 rumors, you know I'm going to say the same thing I've been saying for like half a decade... This is the year we finally get Ken Levine's next game announcement! At the very least, a teaser. His team have been working on a single game for almost eight years without so much as a peep to the public. 2K has to cash in eventually. If not that then I think we could see a Bioshock teaser; something I've also been publicly declaring for years much to my own embarrassment. Will this be the year I'm finally vindicated? ... Probably not. 😭 -Christopher C. Castillo

The 1HP discussion must continue! First of all, we are supposed to point out missed joke opportunities and Ben actually made the joke and NO ONE reacted! Something along the line of.... Well if stubbing your toe does X HP and you stub your toe X times then do you die? and Ben says solemnly "that's how my Grandma went" and I about fell out of my chair!!! Cohorts all give Ben his proper reactions now please. Thank you.

Jake Simpson

Secondly, other things that do 1HP.... Papercut. Splinter. Mosquito Bite. Falling and scraping your knee. Biting your tongue where it bleeds. The theme being actually losing some blood or breaking the skin barrier. Stubbing a toe or stepping on a Lego is more of a "stunned" status effect than a loss of life force. However, hitting a desk hard enough to bruise would probably count as a bruise is internal bleeding, and obviously with enough of that you can also die eventually. Fun topic would love to see more suggestions.

RickyWinterborn

would minnmax ever make a written news letter or gaming zine? maybe a quarterly release?

Jared B

With the recent Leaks regarding Silent Hill. How does everybody feel about gaming leaks? I have noticed for myself I have gotten to the point of not liking them as it seems to build unrealistic expectations of what a game could be vs what it might actually be.

Jordan Brown

Hey MinnMax, Remember the Intellivision Amico? Do we think this thing will ever be released and will Tommy Tallarico ever apologize for this disaster?

Fred Dinovo

Howdy crew, It's planting season, do any of you garden and if so what do you grow? If you like to garden what is on your bucket list to try? Personally in addition to my normal garden I want to carve out some space to grow my own pumpkin and use that for a jack-o-lantern in the fall.

Garrett Wainstock

What video game character is the best role model?

BearCommando

Hi crew, Is anyone else a little relieved by Starfield’s delay, simply because of how packed this holiday season was shaping up to be? Between Botw2, Starfield, Harry Potter, and Pokémon Scarlet we were going to be overwhelmed with huge open world games all dropping at the same time. Do you think any of the delays were simply because the devs were afraid of competing with the other big releases? Is Harry Potter the big winner here by not having to compete for sales against Botw2 and Starfield?

Preston Determan

Hey Everyone, Have you guys ever had any weird quirks with your consoles/PC? I had an Xbox One that would turn itself on randomly at numerous times throughout the day and now my PS5 turns on when my dog barks (or any loud noise occurs). Do I just have a habit of getting consoles with personality or are there other quirky consoles out there?

John Eirich

Hello Ben and crew! Since we are talking about Saints Row this week, I wanna bring up having your RPG character being fully voiced: I can’t get behind it. I don’t mean silent, I still love having dialogue options and my own “voice”, but dude, I do not sound like Nolan North. Thoughts? You all rock!

Michael Berry

Hey Minnmax, I have been recently playing around with the 3DO and it's library of fever dream games. The 3DO is littered with bad luck and bad choices. However, one choice that I appreciate is how they developed the controllers to be daisy-chained for multiplayer. At the time, I thought it was cool to have a design where you could have 3 or more players without the need of a multitap. I do not believe anyone else tried this. The introduction of wireless controllers in subsequent generations made this idea become obsolete very quickly, but I still find it a novel approach. Are there any ideas or concepts in the industry that landed with a thud, but you secretly dug?

John Richards

Hola CLC’s There’s always chatter around video game movies, but in your opinion, what game franchise would benefit from a bad ass and fully authorized novelization? Bonus question - if you could write a novel set in any video game world, or with any video game characters, what franchise would you choose to bring to the printed page? THANKS, GANG!

Brian Alverez

With Cyberpunk's disastrous launch, Starfield's delay, and BioWare's dormancy there really hasn't been many of these huge titles the last few years. I get the distinct feeling that the next Dragon Age is probably BioWare's last game as a studio and that would leave two major studios standing that produce these titles. Are AAA western RPGs becoming endangered?

Luca Alberti

'Morning (hopefully) MinnMax! Not E3 is around the corner which means only one thing: we might be approaching the re-reveal of Metroid Prime 4! I know, people think it's vaporware, but this June it'll be 3 years and a half since the announcement of the Reboot of the new installment, given the piece of concept art recently released by Retro and the persistent Rumors about a Metroid Prime remaster/remake, do you think Nintendo will actually deliver while the fans are still hot on Dread or is asking for Samus to show up in two consecuitve E3 Directs too much?

David Dubs

Hey Crew! Starfield's delay always felt inevitable. What are the clear signs that make you think a game will be delayed when it's announced?

Jason

Salute Mr. Hanson and my favorite crew. I wonder, is there a game boss that you could envision fighting in a different format than the one that you actually played? Just as an example, I could see fighting Sephiroth in a From Software/ Souls format and being completely engulfed by it, or by Seymour in FFX in a Souls format. Are there bosses like that for you guys that come to mind?

Alan Long

Name a game that every time you think about starting it you are riddled with anxiety? An open world with a thousand locations on the map? An RPG with a 3 digit hour count? Any advice to get over that feeling? Mine is Persona 5 Royal. I know the game is great but it still sits in plastic wrap in my game drawer

Brady Easter

Hey MinnMaxers, If you had to guess, how do you think it would physically feel to double jump?

Jason

Follow up just for Joe…as a longtime fan of all of you guys at…the other place…how do you REALLY feel about Dan Ryckert?

Tyler Kasishke

Hello! What animal would you say best describes you, or another cohort or contributor, and why?

Greg Spenser

Hanson you and I are both fans of Survivor. How, in this day and age, has this show not been turned into a video game? I feel like so many of the games played on the show could easily translate to mini-games. And with the popularity of games with a social aspect such as Among Us, and Deceit, having a group of players get together for an extended gaming session with one sole survivor, sounds like an amazing opportunity to create a niche in the 'Battle Royale' space. If it was done as well as you can imagine what would you like to see in a Survivor video game?

Justin Hughes

Hey Ben and the cohorts. I bought a PC at the beginning of the year hoping to play all of these awesome games coming out this year. Now that almost all of them have been delayed to next year I want to play some older games I may have missed having only been a console gamer for my whole life. So my question is what are some of the greatest pc games of all time that I missed?

Mike Lynch

Hey y'all! Of the three major console companies, Nintendo, Playstation, Xbox, which do you think would be able to acquire one of the other companies? How about both of the other companies? Based on your pick, how do you think that company would integrate their new acquisition?

Sebastian Apolinario

Last month, I finally had some extra time and I was able to play God Of War (2018). I was super excited to play it because of all the recommendations from friends and the hype around it. In conclusion, I didn't end up enjoying it as much as I thought I would, but decided to finish it even though it felt like "homework". This feeling came especially as I feel part of the gaming community/industry (Imagine a movie critic that has never watched the Godfather).

I’m not saying that the game was bad, I actually think it is an AMAZING game, well deserved game of the year. It just wasn’t for me.

Is there a game that you felt you HAD to play and ended up just pushing through and finishing it because this is part of “your work”?

CANAS1AN

Hi MinnMaxx Crew, my question this week is; What's a video game trope you are sick and tired of? Thanks for all you do :D

Diego Vasquez

One thing I have appreciated about the MinnMax team, especially those who came from Game Informer, has been your journalistic integrity. GI has a clear news component, so the objectivity and the journalistic instincts of the reporters shines through. During GDC, the topic of ignoring the upcoming "Harry Potter" game due to JK Rowling's opinions came up, and it got me thinking -- what is the team's thoughts on journalistic ethics when many outlets have blurred lines between news and entertainment? Also, does MinnMax have an official policy where this is concerned? Keep up the great work!

Ronn

Hello CLCs! I am here to announce that I accomplished my BetterQuest goal of passing the spring semester! Not only did I pass but I finished the semester with B's and above in every class! Here are some fun facts that I learned. In Evolutionary Biology I learned that female hyenas have a fake penis and that when some bird species lay eggs, which ever one is born first will murder there sibling. From Primatology I learned that chimpanzees are terrifying and make tools in order to make other tools and will use strategy to hunt smaller animals/primates. Besides humans, they are the only ones that make tools to make other tools and that keeps me up at night. In Physics 2 I learned that math is still hard even when you take the dumb version for Biology majors. My next BetterQuest goal is, you guessed it, to pass my summer semester. This semester I'm taking Organic Chemistry 1 🙃, Intro to Pharmacology, and Medical Self Assessment. I will keep you updated with how many tears I cry while learning Organic Chemistry. Keep on being great! -Ronn

Fatt Mish

Hey MinnMax crew! What a wonderful show! My question is, what is your biggest gaming related accomplishment that didn't occur in a game? For example, mine is the time I hooked up 4 GameCubes with Gameboy Players to 4 different TVS so I could play Zelda: Four Swords Adventure with my friends where we all had our own TV to watch when we went into the underworld... Basically I'm wondering how nerdy you've gotten while expressing your love of games. Much respect! -Mars

Joshua

Hi everyone, Citizen sleeper was a great palate cleanser after Elden Ring. Does everyone else feel like they need a shorter game to play right after playing a giant open world game? Ben if you don't play it definitely listen to the soundtrack for the end of the year music episode.

jacob hubbard

Hey Crew! - I recently replayed Fallout 4 with my partner and they thought it was funny how I made my character look a lot like myself. She said she usually just plays with the sliders until her character is a homunculus creature! How do you guys approach character creation in games? Thanks!

Conner McCabe

Hi Ben and the cool cats! Last week while traveling I started a new playthrough of Chrono Trigger on the Nintendo DS and played into the first main dungeon. Once I got home I decided that I'd rather play it on SNES (likely to justify the purchase from a few years ago) so I began another playthrough on that version. Now I'm not saying that I prefer the SNES version over the DS, but are there any previous or older versions of a video game that you prefer over the refined or upgraded version? Thanks!

Vilis

Since we're talking RUMORS for E3, I did hear floating around a notion of various companies working with Konami on Silent Hill remakes with the most concrete seeming to be a Silent Hill 2 Remake, what odds do you put that at?

Vilis

I'm also starting a rumor of FF7R footage distinctly because there's a book about Aerith and Tifa's pasts coming out in English in November, so this would be in the sweet spot to build hype for the book and maintain hype for part 2. That's my rumor and I'm sticking to it.

Hey guys, this should kinda tie into starfield and e3. video game speculation and hype is a weird thing for me to think about. On one hand it's really fun following a game so closely pre release and sucking up any information to try to build an idea of what this, in a way, fantasy game is going to be. Building the game up to be this amazing super game that it usually isn't. I know I did that for GTA 5. But on the other hand it can lead to massive disappointments and frustration when games don't live up to this imaginary standard created by speculation and misinterpreted intentions of the poor games marketing department. I've become totally jaded to this stuff since no man's sky So I guess the question would be, how much do you let yourself get invested in a game pre release, knowing all that can come with it?

Aaron Hurd

What are some of your biggest pet peeves? Personally, i can’t stand when I ask someone the time and they give me an approximation. If it’s 5:03 tell me it’s 5:03 damn it! Those 3 minutes could be the difference between life and death

Shawn Mills

With Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers releasing this week, my question is what shows do you remember liking when you were a kid?

Eric Merrill

Have you ever called/ written in to a radio show or podcast? What did you ask? Or are we just a bunch of little sickos with our questions?

Mathias Jülich

Hey necroMINNcers, Which defunct game studio would you resurrect?

Ben-jammin and the CLCs, long time listener, first time writer… Hearing Jeff’m talking about shadows of the empire’s outrageous price tag last week got me thinking, what game could pull off a $100 price tag in todays day and age without an appreciable drop in sales? Could GTA6 or elden ring 2 stand to make more money or have companies given up on charging more for their games and resorted to micro transactions to substitute for inflation/rising development costs? I’ll sign off and listen.

G'day! Inspired by last week's questions about video game towns: Do ya'll have the same sense of place, nostalgia, or memory of area layouts in video game locations that have a 3d camera, as opposed to older games with fixed cameras? If you want an example, read below - otherwise discuss :) It could just be how my brain works, but I personally relate to places more with a fixed camera. I can close my eyes, and guide you straight to the weapon shop in Balamb in Final Fantasy VIII, but something like BoTW, I am constantly lost in the towns. I think it’s the free camera not letting me take mental snapshots. Is this because I grew up with fixed camera games, or do the young CLC's experience the same? Btw, polley is pronounced like polygon :)

I noticed that when I play Elden Ring and want to change weapons while moving, I put my right thumb on the left thumbstick while my left thumb uses the d-pad. I'm doing this without even thinking about it. Sometimes my left index finger gets involved too although I couldn't tell you how, it all happens so fast! Do you have any pro gamer moves that happen with your hands on the controller? Follow up question, wouldn't a fifth face button be useful in some games so I didn't have to do this crap? Lots of love, your crush, Crab Palace <3 xoxo

Hi Ben and friends, as a producer at a game developer, I have a question that is close to my daily life. As some people might heard about, making games is hard, takes a lot of time and of course money. A lot of money in fact. While you can't really save money on game design, level design, programming, internal QA and production (of course), a lot of elements can be outsourced to partners, that are specialized in those areas and only jump into the project when needed. That also costs money, of course, but you have some leverage here. Thus my question: if you were in charge and had to decide which outsourcing costs to cut in order to even ship the game at all, what two of the following areas would you sacrifice? 1. Audio - especially smaller studios can struggle with producing all needed sound effects and applying a final mix to everything, so they get the help of audio studios and foliage artists specialized on game audio. If you cut this, basic SFX will be there - you can buy sound libraries or use your USB mic to record cutting a lettuce in your kitchen - but you would miss out on the gut punching, tailor-made effects for your game. 2. Animation - you don't have a big sound stage with a mocap setup? Well, someone else does and after hiring actors and a director, practicing and recording everything, the raw data also needs to be cleaned up and prepared for your project. Or do you want a hand-drawn and cutely animated style? That also takes experts and a lot of time and money. So if you cut this, you may be able to use some assets from the store or do some basic animations by hand, but it's not going to have the buttery-smooth feel and elegant style you desire. 3. VFX - visual effects tie everything together and make animations and audio stand out even more. Your wonderfully animated punch to the noggin with the crunchy impact sound feels even better with a small dust cloud as well as sweat particles coming off of the opponents face, right? What is a laser weapon without an actual laser? An explosion without the ball of fire and smoke? You may use store assets once again, but they oftentimes don't quite fit your art style or they aren't optimized for performance as you would like. 4. Music - a great soundtrack is something whole podcasts are recorded about. In order to get there, you can pay an experiences composer to write something that fits your theme and mood. You can also go to a stock-music site and search for something that might fit or try producing something by yourself - what else do you have Garage Band pre-installed on your iPad for? 5. Cinematics - you may be able to draw stick figure story boards, but you are not a director or cinematographer and you certainly don't have the time to learn this now. Cinematics also oftentimes need special animations, sound effects, VFX and music. Seems like a lot of effort. Cutting this, you could revert to in-game dialogues only or maybe hand-drawn stills with minor parallax animations. 6. Localization - English is spoken all around the world, right? But it is known that you find a bigger audience, if you translate your game into the most common languages. You may have a team member that natively speaks a desired language, but it's still a lot of work and additionally requires special language QA. Platform holders also have their terminology they want you to follow, so don't you dare to write "Premi qualsiasi comando per assegnarlo all'azione selezionata" when Sony clearly expects "Premi qualsiasi tasto per assegnarlo all'azione selezionata", you silly dev. If you cut this, English it is and you will miss out on potential fans around the world. (Btw.: English is not my first language, so excuse any mistakes. Especially my pronounciation.) 7. External QA - your internal team can only test so much per day, finding new bugs and needing to retest issues over and over again, talking to developers all the time and describing every small thing in great detail. They will develop tunnel vision for your project, making them miss obvious problems your players will find instantly. Additionally, you don't have all the equipment at the office - graphics cards, CPUs & Co. in all of the configuration. And if you want to release on any console, certification is a complicated process, that needs expertise. Without external QA you will miss a lot of crashes, bugs and glitches and you will have to focus on very few or even just one platform - I recommend Steam and you better not have any multiplayer. I know, it's a rather long question, but I hope it's interesting to think about and sparks some lively discussions. Have fun and stay safe out there, Clemens aka. GerhardKoepke

Which of these would bother you more? Accidentally using a towel somebody else already used after a shower or accidentally using a brush or comb already belonging to someone else?

PhillyYeetSteak

Hey yall, Im sure we will get some announcements and reveals this summer... but if you had to guess today, what do you think will be the big holiday games for 2022?

WeGoGiant

Hello MinnMaxians, Have you ever played a game that, while a critical "middle-of-the-road" experience, just clicked with you surprisingly well? The video game equivalent of a popcorn flick? I got the Sniper Elite games in a humble bundle and Sniper Elite 4, while being that perfect 7/10 experience, was just so fun I basically 100% the game. I'm excited Sniper Elite 5 is coming to Game Pass later this month. Thanks bunches, Sean

Tonytheswordsman

Do you prefer a voiced protagonist with a personality that is a character or one that is essentially an empty vessel for you to input? I feel like I have more fonder memories playing a character who has a definitive voice. RPGs where the character is You and Action play formers where you’re playing that character is an interesting change of pace and how you interact with the story.
