Hello, So currently there is this big debate in the Nier Automata community because somebody has discovered a secret area (room) that nobody knew existed. As of right now (to my knowledge) there is no consensus if it is leftover assets, a mod, a 1.0 disc version, some elaborate prank, or even some astro turf marketing for the Switch version its been very fascinating to follow. Where do you all stand on what this could be and do you ever get sucked in to moments like these when old games still cause a stir? Thanks.

Mike Lynch

Hey y'all! Question for Kelsey. How does The Video Game History Foundation preserve eShop and digital platform games? I've seen many old games that have been saved thru physical and online emulation. Are modern games being saved that way today? Thanks!

Hello MinnMax show Is Road Rash 2 for the SEGA Genesis the best Motorcycle game of all time?

Mandrake

I had an idea for a Metal Gear game. It’s a battle royale mode in the center and a linear single player campaign on the perimeter. You need to find data in the single player outposts on the perimeter in order to gain a chance to infiltrate the center using powerful stealth abilities. Single player AI enemies use guns with bioauthentication, so the only weapons available to you are in the war zone. Without them, you play the whole campaign with just a squirt gun, which can briefly blind enemies. If a battle royale player kills enough single player looters, they get to control a Metal Gear for 30 seconds. Do you think I should make this or nah? - Hideo Kojima of Bluepoint Studios

Hello Ben and video game historians, What's the most recent game you are nostalgic for? Some of mine would be Overwatch, Monster Hunter World, and Final Fantasy VII Remake. Am I nuts for thinking these games are nostalgic?

LevelWiley

Hey Minnmax and the legend himself, Imagine you had a time machine, and you were tasked with going to the ideal time and place to play arcade games on a Saturday afternoon. You can choose anywhere arcade and any year. It can be one from your childhood or one you've only dreamed about. Where/when are you going, what games do you seek out, and what are you snacking on? Ps you'd turn into a 12 year old just for this day. Thanks yall.

Hello Min Maxxers, I'm a high school teacher and I have been approved to teach a 15 week elective on "The History of Video Games". It will be an hour each class, it will be once a week, and the course will run twice a year. My question is, what should I teach?!? My current thoughts are discussing the generations, influential people, and important moments. I'm thinking about including "Console Wars" to read as well. What do you think? What would you teach and how should I go about it? I've got all summer to develop my curriculum, and if you can help me out, I promise to add all of your names at the beginning of each lesson as experts. Rick From Brooklyn

Heya MinnMax crew and friends, I was thinking about film/tv genres and how they compare to video game ones. There are a ton of similar genres between the two mediums, but do you think it's possible we'll ever see a video game version of the documentary genre? What would that even look like gameplay wise? Maybe a sim?

Benjamin

Hi y'all what's the most modern arcade game you have played?

Ryan Foshee

Any of y’all remember Billy Hatcher? What the hell was that about?

Hallo! I have realized that sending in questions to the minnmax shows kinda destroys the show for me. This might sound strange and I guess it is, but let me explain. I love this show and it is my favorite podcast and I tend to send in a question for about every second episode, but by doing that I just end up waiting in excitement to hear if my question or post is read up. So all the other posts from the other listeners kinda disappears in my "disappointment" that it is not my post! And that makes me feel like I do not respect the other listeners posts. This has gone so far that on the last episode I skipped to the community questions part of the episode and changed the speed to 2x so I could listen through fast to hear if my name and question was read out loud. I realize that while I write this I sound like a freaking maniac! That is fun i guess. So in this episode I will again wait if this post is read on the show. This is an evil circle I have entered. Help me Kelsey! But, seriously though, your show is great and listening to it while playing games with boring music is perfect. When I play Xenoblade 3 I have to turn you off, live with it. Hate your show.

James Smith

Hi everyone! Do you still play Dreams? If so, are there any games you've played recently in Dreams that are worth talking about?

Shade

Is a moment in a game more special for you if you could have missed it? I hear a lot of people mention this that they enjoy a moment more after they find out that other people who played the game didn't have it. This feels strange to me personally as I would prefer a meticulously crafted narrative that is thematically cohesive rather than risking missing the best moments but I am curious how you feel about those kinds of situations in games.

With game development being easier than ever before (and presumably more people developing games than ever before) Has there been any movement in the preservation community to reach out to small development teams and provide "best practice" or guidelines on proactive preservation of development materials? Obviously not every small indie dev will make it big but any preservation must be good preservation right?

Tokyo Game Life

Hi MinnMax, With the positive reception to Live A Live, it’s clear that there are unlocalized retro games from Japan that can still make an impact on modern audiences. I recently beat For The Frog The Bell Tolls and it’s a title they absolutely would be looked back on as a classic Nintendo title if it launched overseas. What unlocalized retro Japanese game do you think could release today and still capture the imaginations of a modern audience?

CANAS1AN

hey minnmaxers! i recently responded to a question about "my most memorable game boss moment" and wanted to share with Minnmaxx. In my family, my mom is basically undefeated at Monopoly. The first time I finally beat her after 10 years of trying, I hooped and hollered and took pictures of the game board. I celebrated that momentous occasion and will never forget it. love the content and super looking forward to the Tabletop show!

Greetings to the MinnMax fan and guests, with Sandman on the horizon it is appropriate I come to you with a dream of a game idea I had: PvPvE Battleroyale focused on the Z-axis. Your traditional BattleRoyale has a vast, flattish area. Maybe some mountains. In this dream, it was an intense trek DOWN. You land on the surface like every other BattleRoyal, but you immediately Crack down into on of several vast caverns. The cavern systems will always procedurally generated, so a surprise, like in Returnal. Each layer down funnels you in one direction or another via the cavern collapsing. As you move down things get weirder and hint at which of, let's start with 4, types of enemies (The one in my dream was Stone) are the ultimate foe at the lowest layer. Defeating the final foe gifts you an ancient metal ring which goes into you Universal Weapon Generator (how you modulate you weapons) and gives you a power boost (with a very cool transformation) to defeat other foes who may be lingering in the shadows hoping to ambush you as you weaken yourself fighting the foe. Whoever is the last one standing after the foe is defeated gets the ring which can be used for cool stuff, cosmetics obviously, but also like a base or something you can hang out in. The TLDR: A Battle Royale where you all fight down through tunnels with massive drops between areas, and a final foe that incentivizes you to not kill everyone else too quick.

I was at a work meeting, and someone asked me about the nature of our employees. In that moment, on the spot, under the gun, in the hot seat, having been startled from a half listening day dream that I was having about the Radagon fight in Elden Ring… Dracula from Castlevania popped in my head, and all I could think to respond was, “what is man, if not a miserable pile of dreams he’ll never achieve?” a twist on the “miserable pile of secrets” quote… I’m known as an eccentric, and expected a couple raised eye brows and a trip to HR, but after some long contemplative silence, my inquisitive brow soaked in sweat, the response from the room was “whoa… that’s profound” “I love that” “we need to focus on mental health” and heads slowly nodded… frankly, I was aghast at the mental gymnastics of these people. Y’all ever let loose a quote from a movie, anime, show, or game no one knows, and minds are blown? I can’t wait to let loose some monotone Silent Hill stuff since we use radios here… “Radio… What’s the deal with that radio?”

Hello all! I won question of the show on my first ever question here. Knowing my odds of ever winning again are slim to none….what’s the point of life anymore. Seriously though, you ever peak/win/excel early at something and now find it hard to go back to or you still do it, but never reach those former heights? Mine(other than the question thing) is winning big on a slot machine my first spin. Won 400 bucks. Never won more than 20 since. Thanks!

BearCommando

Hey crew, With all the talk about Stray this past couple weeks, I’m wondering what other settings you’d enjoy exploring from the perspective of a cat? I myself vote for a Medieval English game called ‘Excalipurr’

Howdy cohorts! It’s time to play America’s fastest growing game show sensation - Contra boss or Death Metal band! So in every matchup below, one option is the name of a boss from the Contra game series and the other is the name of an actual death metal band. Can you find out which is which and name that Contra Boss? (Note to Hanson: the ones with ** after the names are the Contra bosses) Old Man's Child or Psycho Mother** Dead Horse or Long Hand Guy** Huge Face** or Ghost Brigade Crab the Joe** or Strapping Young Lad General Surgery or Colonel Bahamut** Bosco Spider** or Venom Prison Terror 2000 or Mother Alien** Big Fuzz** or Extreme Noise Terror Mr. Heli-Robo** or Dr. Shrinker Project Hate 1999 or Mach 777** Java** or Coldworker Project C** or Chain Collector The Crimson Armada or Brother Robots Kenny 1 & 2**

Hey Ben and crew, What happened to Penny Arcade? While they're still producing content and of course PAX continues on (although I don't believe they're actually involved in running it anymore), I never hear them mentioned or referenced anymore. I know they had some controversies over the years so maybe that gradually took its toll. Or is it simply a matter of their influence waning as the industry matured? I actually have a theory on this, that the rise of podcasts and more prominent gaming journalism personalities (such as Jeff G. and the GB crew) displaced PA and the webcomic medium. Would love to hear your thoughts on this, especially from long-time industry vets like Jeff Gerstmann and John Ricciardi!

Hey Minnmaxers, With the release of several spiritual successors and sequels that people fear may be "too similar" to previous entries my question is, If you could erase the memory of having played one of "original" games before playing it's spiritual successor so you could go in fresh what would it be? Upcoming examples are Gotham Knights and Arkham series, Calisto Protocol and Dead Space, and God of War Ragnarok and God of War. Thanks

Josh64

Hey guys, does the state of the world ever effect what games your in the mood for? With the current political discourse, Ico and games with “gentler” tones have done a much better job on my mental health than any Doom, Call of Duty, or God of War ever could.

Zane Dukes

Hi there minnmaxers, The discussion about Nope and modern movies feel the need to over explain everything reminded me about howTiktok keeps showing me the big bang theory clip where they decide that Indiana Jones had no effect on the story in Raiders. Am I crazy but didn’t Indy lead Toth to Marion? Toth also doesn’t know what indy was looking for from Marion! Can you think of any movie or game criticisms or conspiracy theories that are clearly a result of people not paying attention?

MuskyGoron

Hey Minncrew! What potential game is leaving the most money on the table by not being made? I.e. What game seems like a no brainer to make, but hasn’t been made? In my opinion, it’s Super Mario Odyssey 2. It feels like a game that would basically print money for Nintendo, but we haven’t heard a peep about it even existing.

Nick from Atlanta

Hello Hanson, Kelsey, John, and Jeff! You have been challenged to a 1v1 in an unknown video game. You have no idea what game you'll be playing, but you know it'll be on a controller, and you get a sabotage: you can pick one button on the controller, and it will not consistently work. It's not completely broken, just temperamental. Analog sticks are off limits. What button do you choose? I'm going with the left face button (Square/X/Y) and hoping it's the Interact/Reload/Use button. Thanks, Nick from Atlanta

What’s a pop culture franchise you’ve never participated in (played the games, bought the books, watched the movies, etc), but really enjoy the lore of? I’m enjoying Luten’s Warhammer 40k lore series so much, and while I haven’t participated in the franchise, I could see myself making 3D printed figures for fun.

Tonytheswordsman

WAZZZUP! Barely getting a negative covid test after two weeks of having it, I had lots of soup so I was wondering; what are some home remedies you grew up with? Special soups, concoctions, etc? Stay safe out there! Jeff will always be a threat!

Following up on the question about why Pokemon isn't the go-to example for video games being adapted into shows/movies---Do you think most self-described Pokemon fans born during/after 1997 know that the Anime came after the games, and didn't release before/at the same time as Red and Blue?

RTz13

Hi crew Missed joke opportunity here. Ben mentioned on the show a few weeks ago that he's occasionally watching movies on his projector in his garden and everyone flipped that how good Ben's life is. Someone should have said 'Ben, do you know how this thing operates?'

LlorchDurden

Regarding preserving video game history, what about preserving how a game was received when it launched vs overtime? I vividly remember Zelda Wind Waker not making a huge splash when it launched cause we all wanted a more mature /darker link (like the demo we saw before GC was announced). More recent examples may be No Man's Sky or even Among Us

Nathan Freeman

Where is the line drawn between corporate and independent journalism? For example, Giant Bomb started independent was sold to corporate but still able to maintain “independent” status for a few years.

RedMption

Hey Ben, Kelsey, John and Jeff. Whats a piece of media you feels is under appreciated. Can be a game, film, book or whatever, just something you feel like you'd like to have a bigger discussion with people about, that maybe doesn't get brought up enough? I've been a big fan of the the netflix series 'Tear along the dotted line', but feel it's flown under most peoples radar.

The_Smak

Hey MinnMax, are there any games you know that you have played and enjoyed, but you hardly remember anything about the games themselves? Characters, story, gameplay...etc.

MyNameIsDan

Hi everyone! Game of the year discussions are typically my favorite pieces of content to listen to from gaming outlets. However, I've contemplated in recent years about whether or not they are good or bad for the industry since most of the time the spotlight during these conversations often fall on Triple A games (Don't worry Jeff, I don't hate Triple A games). There also seems to be a disconnect when a group involved in these discussions have not played a lot of the same games as one another. Those are just a couple of my thoughts, but could you please provide reasons as to why game of the year discussions are both beneficial and harmful for the games industry. Thanks, Dan

Not a question- I just wanted to say that I love Live A Live. It’s unbelievable. My favorite chapter so far is the Shinobi Japan chapter.

Hi everyone, With certain stylizations of major intellectual properties entering public domain recently/soon, what do you think is the biggest property a notable-ish studio would be willing to tackle? Is there a studio you’d like to see take on a specific property? Some notable IP entering/soon-to-be public domain: -Early versions of Winnie the Pooh -The source material for Bambi -Early Sherlock Holmes stories -Felix the Cat -Steamboat Willie/Mickey Mouse (2024) -Popeye (2025) -Early Looney Toons (2026) -Lots of old books!

Question for Kelsey - My son was just given an original Gameboy pocket. Can you recommend any standout or unique games from that generation?

Ian Switaj

Hello everyone! Recently while at a video game convention I came across something that not only had I never seen before but something I thought I would never see: A software development kit for the Game Boy Advance with all of the software and hardware included. Unfortunately I did not have the $600 it went for in disposable income to spend on something I -- to be honest -- would never use. My question(s) for you: What is the most significant piece/artifact of video game that you have ever seen and what do you consider to be the "white whale" for video game historians?

Ian Switaj

Hey all! If you were the main character in a scenario of Live A Live, what would your gameplay mechanic/shtick be?

Kevin Kuper

Hey all, Kevin here. Quick question while we all think our favorite video game is a 10/10 what is the one thing you would want to change to improve your favorite video game of all time?

Swiggity Swoo

I'm starting a podcast for the first time and I'm pooping my pants with nervousness. Any tips? How do you organize the members of the pod? How do you structure conversations without coming across as pushy. Need help from the best Podcaster of all time! Thanks! I love the show. I look forward to it every week.

Seangocongo

I was listening to another podcast about three years ago (sorry Ben), and they had a guest on that worked for Ubisoft as an animator. He talked about a little known industry term called TTP (Time To Penis). This was described as the the time it takes, after giving players the ability to create user based content, that content featuring male genitalia appears. Is this for real? Have you heard of TTP? Sorry for the late comment, I'm happy to submit again next week.

Pearse

Hey everyone. Remember “OK Soda”? I still have all the labels and cans for some reason. I was obsessed with that garbage when it released even though I knew it was a marketing experiment. Anyways, do you think that video games sometimes feature too much music? I like when games let some silence in and ambient sound effects. It seems to give single player games a nice meditative quality. -Burningtime from Boston

Follow up to last week or maybe the weeks before podcast…I firmly believe that In and Out is the best burger on the planet! I travel to CA about once a month for work, and I basically live off In and Out when I’m there. When I’m back home in WA I use this recipe to get my fix. I challenge any one to make a better burger than this. Perfection! https://dinnerthendessert.com/in-n-out-cheeseburger/

Question for Jeff: how big is Matthew Rories head… really?

Michael Baker

I don't have a question but I want to see Jeff clap in.

Jercyan

listening to the episode right now and Ben said he didn't see a lot of people championing Live A Live. Ben check out IGN's Peer did a twitter thread about Live a Live because he was living in Japan when it came out
