Hey MinnMax! The indie space has quite a big hold on the slice of life genre of video games, little to no action but focused on other activities. Nintendo with Animal Crossing is the only large AAA developer I know who make games like that, do you think there's a potential one day for Sony, Microsoft or one of the other large AAA developers might make a big budget(nearing like GoW levels) Slice of life game? What could one look like?

Robert Key

I've been playing through the Bioshock trilogy, one of my favorite series, after seeing the franchise recently turned 15. I'm currently on Bioshock Infinite, and I just now noticed during the loading screen that Booker Dewitt and I have some things in common in that we're both 6 foot 1, born April 19, and have green eyes. I was surprised at those very specific similarities, which got me thinking: which video game character do you think you're each most similar to based on appearance and/or personality?

Christian Jimenez

Hello, Do you still think God of War (2018) should have had a subtitle? I do. With the original still a part of its lore and chronology having it be just God of War irks me a bit since it was not a full reboot. What subtitle would you give it now? God of War Saga (actual norse word)? Cheers

RickyWinterborn

hello cohorts and empress of indy games jill grodt! what do ya'll think of the general direction of indy games in 2022 and beyond? amazing? bleak? too many? too few? will dunkey ruin the entire concept? or SAVE IT SINGLE HANDEDLY!?

Good day, all! After watching and really enjoying Kelsey's new show, Collector Corner, it got me thinking about all of the missed opportunities I had in the past to either start or continue building collections of my own. From silly things, like pogs from the 90s, that I wish I still had to show my teenage daughter, to more personal gaming collections like having most of the physical copies of the mainline Final Fantast games before I - foolishly - sold them all. Did any of you have any collections that you either WISH you still had or WISH that you continued expanding on?

Toasted

What are your go to games and films when you're sick? For me, whenever I'm under the weather I'll play Pokémon and watch Ghibli films.

TRUEfoe

Hiya MinnMax! Please help settle this one for my wife and I. Do you wash your new clothes before you wear them? There's no better feeling than a pair of fresh undies right off the store shelves.

AnAttackCorgi

Howdy there cozy cohorts. Fall’s here and it’s time to start layering up. What game had the coziest overworld or main hub? I’m talking straight comfy vibes. The main town of the OG Torchlight game comes to my mind. Stay warm y’all. PS, October is the best month and that’s final. I don’t make the rules I’m sorry. PPS, the best or worst pumpkin spiced drink/food is???

Hey folks! Writing in because of the presence of indie expert Jill G but you all have experience on this: How do you folks in games media keep track of what games are releasing when? It seems to be easy to find a 'release schedule' for the bigger games — for example, GI keeps one — but it seems like smaller or indie games can slip through the cracks on those sites' lists. And yet, many of you are very on-the-ball for those releases, despite the sometimes overwhelming volume of lovely indie games recently. Is it the publisher press emails? Is there a super secret maintained Google Calendar somewhere? Do you keep your own personal lists? Do you use an aggregate site like Opencritic, Metacritic, SteamDB to track? I am intensely curious! Thanks much.

Yo! So, I’m replaying FF7 Remake and following along with your Deepest Dive on it(very good btw) I’m at the part where Cloud helps that old dude and then refuses to help again unless the guy pays 5000 gil. Ya’ll were commenting on how cold Cloud was asking such a high fee. Think ya’ll missed he did that to put a fire under the guy and get him out of his funk. The other dude even mentions how he seems more spirited now after that. Yes, it’s been two years…but it bugged me I couldn’t comment at the time and defend Cloud. Lol thanks

LlorchDurden

On GoW Ragnarok plot , just picture Good Will Hunting and the kiddo is Matt Damon and off we go! :D

Hey MinnMax crew! Do you like LP Vinyls? Do you have any of them, possibly even a game soundtrack that you're particularly fond of?

Vilis

Sup Chooms, with Cyberpunk Edgerunner giving 2077 a much needed shot in the arm, have you heard any murmurs of fresh reactions now that maybe a new player base is coming in for a first look 2 years later now that the game is functioning in the way originally intended? Also, the show is fantastic. Bang Zoom, start to finish! Definitely mark it down as one of the top game adaptations, and I like that the original TTRPG system's creator is front and center on the opening credits.

Hi Gang, with a hurricane coming our way, I wonder: what is your "staying in on a rainy day game?"

Sinclair Britton

Hey Ben and cohorts, if you had to pick a game that you believed was ‘perfect’ what would it be? By ‘perfect’ I mean a game that cannot be improved upon in any way. For example, to me Super Mario World is a ‘perfect’ game. There’s nothing I believe you could do to improve the music, visual design, gameplay, level design etc, and the game has no gameplay bugs or errors. It is the definition of a ‘perfect’ game. So what do you believe is a perfect game? A game with nothing that could be done to improve it…

Ronn

Hello non Florida residents! I live in Orlando and I am preparing for Hurricane Ian. Even though I have lived in Florida since 2005, this will be my first hurricane. I have experienced both tropical storms (low grade hurricanes) and blizzards with lake effect (Upstate New York area). Which one do you y'all think is worse? Personally, I think blizzards are worse because it gets cold and there's nothing to do about that, but with hurricanes we get to have Hurricane Parties and make some of the best internet content possible. Stay dry and don't panic buy Ronn

LB

Hey Ben, I know your a big lake guy. Do you ever go fishing on said lake. Does any of the cohorts fish? If not, New Show + idea Love the Show

God's Garage

Ben, Jill, and the Horts, What’s the best town in a video game? Is it the solemn beauty of Jarburg in Elden Ring, or the lush choirs of Plainsong in Horizon Forbidden West? What’s the one place in a game that truly whisks you away to another world?

Brendan Johnson

Hey Ben and co. I had my first kid about a year and a half ago and I’m super excited to share my love for video games with her. I know I have a little time before she’s ready to be playing games, but what are your thoughts on introducing gaming to a kid / recommendation for early games to play? Thanks Brendan from Jersey City New Jersey

Kevin Kennedy

Hi MinnMax! My brother’s wedding is coming up in a few weeks and it has me thinking… what video game song could the DJ play that would bring everyone out on to the dance floor? Have any of you been to weddings where a video game song or two were played? -Kevin

Hello Minnmax and Jill! What would it take to get a 10/10 jet ski game? We know there isn’t a way to definitively score any game because reviews and scores are objective, but let’s assume the best jet ski game ever releases a week before God of War. What kind of features, mechanics and narrative are making waves this November?

It's Hugo's Nook

Hey, have you heard of Atlantis? Watching Ben play through that Indy game made me curious to think: these days I think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t know about Atlantis but in the 1940’s how much % of the world population do you think knew of its myth?

Denham Harry

Playing through Cyberpunk after just playing through the Mass Effect Legendary Edition really has me thinking about dialogue options. Why do people kick up such a stink about the difference between what the option says and what your character actually says? Does it really shock people that much when they select a confrontational option and it ends in confrontation?

Joe Kafchinski

In a stunning act of collusion, the entire videogame industry has come to an agreement that the current marketing cycle for games is broken and needs to be replaced. There are two options on the table: A. The Demystify Game Dev Option. Much will remain unchanged, with games still getting announced years in advance, with all the trailers, delays and pre-order campaigns that entails. However, there will now be unprecedented openness and transparency during the entire development process. Behind the scenes access, including footage of every step from gray box to finished product, with layman-friendly explanations from the creators is freely available for every game. B. The Tell Us When It's Ready Option. No behind the scenes footage (you might get some "bonus material" after a game comes out, but nobody really watches that stuff). But also, no multi-year hype cycles. No games getting announced then going dark for years. No vaporware. No Twitter images with walls of text announcing yet another delay. No "target footage" in trailers. No Puddlegate. Games get announced only when they are 100% certain of hitting their intended release date, which usually means only a few weeks or months of marketing. In their infinite wisdom, the industry is allowing you to decide the future of videogame marketing. So, A or B?

henrik mortensen

Hallo I love Shovel Knight and while I really like all the sequels and most of the spin-offs it has produced I do think it would be really cool if they went in an almost video game history direction by making an N64/PS1 style 3D game and perfect it the way they did with the old style 2D platformer. Hate your show.

Garrett Wainstock

Are there any examples of a "good" figurehead in the video game industry heel-turning to "bad"? Anyone that was redeemed?

Holden Hintz

Welcome BACK to Holden’s Hints with Holden Hintz! In this game, I will be giving you helpful hints at what media outlets determine is the message or takeaway from the particular content. This edition is Video Games! We will be reading what falls under the “talk to your kids about…” section. Using only 2022 releases. If you can’t get it from the first alone, just ask for some of Holden’s Hints and I will give you more. Today we will be pulling word for word from common-sense-media.com GAME #1 Talk to your kids about: violence in the media. Is the impact of the violence in BLANK affected by the frequently bloody and intense combat? Do you think the story and its hero justify this violence, or does the blood and gore go too far? What is it that drives people to risk danger by doing things like diving deeper, climbing higher, and even going to space? Do you feel as though open-world games successfully emulate this feeling of discovery? Hints: Genre: Role-Playing Topics: Magic and Fantasy, Monsters, Ghosts, and Vampires, Wild Animals ESRB rating: M for Blood and Gore, Language, Suggestive Themes, Violence Answer: ELDEN RING GAME #2 Talk to your kids about: screen time. BLANK is broken into fairly small bits, with players able to to play for just 10 or 15 minutes at a time and still feel like they've accomplished something, so can you play for 30 minutes and feel satisfied and ready to move on to something else BLANK can be pretty tough or surprisingly easy, depending on the difficulty you choose, but do you enjoy a game as much if it's a snap to breeze through? Hints: Genre: Action/Adventure Topics: Magic and Fantasy, Monsters, Ghosts, and Vampires ESRB rating: NR for No Descriptions Answer: CULT OF THE LAMB GAME #3 Talk to your kids about: violence in the media. Is the impact of the violence in BLANK affected by the extremely violent nature of the ganeplay? It depicts blood and brutality armed and melee combat between desperate humans, but do you think this violence is necessary to tell the game's story, or could the developers have avoided it while delivering a similar atmosphere and experience? Do you think kids are a product of their environment and the people around them, or are they shaped by their inherent nature? Hints: Genre: Action/Adventure Topics: Adventures, Friendship, Monsters, Ghosts, and Vampires ESRB rating: M for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes, Strong Language, Use of Alcohol Answer: LAST OF US PART 1

Hi Jill and the MinnMax crew! Recently, a TAS (tool assisted) 100% run of the PSX Zelda style game Alundra was posted online. It reminded me of an odd moment in gaming. The song Requiem from the Alundra soundtrack is reused as the song Cara's Theme for the Legend of Legaia soundtrack. These games have no relation to each other (plot, theme, characters, etc), so when I heard that song in Legaia as a kid, it confused the heck out of me. Has this ever been done in any other game? Reused assets between games that aren't in the same series?

Michael Berry

I was able to sample a lot of the Sega CD library earlier this year. My goodness! There are some great games on there like Soulstar and Popful Mail. As a kid, I believed the Sega CD to be a joke that only had FMV games. I was wrong then and misjudged it's library. What are some of your biggest misconceptions with video games?

CANAS1AN

Hey Minn Maxers, I have been in love with board gaming lately (more like 2 years) and I wanted to ask if any cohorts had experience with the game Cosmic Encounter? It is currently my favorite game and I have been going to board game nights around my location to play Cosmic Encounter with new people. Love the content (especially the board game centric stuff!) p.s. Cosmic Encounter Info if curious First launched in 1977, this 45 year old game features negotiation, ship battles, player variable alien powers and more! Spread your ships across the galaxy! The first to 5 foreign colonies wins. It is a masterpiece full of social and strategic gameplay for gamers of all types.

ddobry

Hey y’all, everyone likes to ask about video game hot takes, but what about the flip side? Are there any “hot takes” that you absolutely hate to hear? A take that will automatically make you disregard someone’s opinion because they’re so wrong?? One of mine is Breath of the Wild’s breakable weapons, I think it’s a brilliant mechanic and it adds so much to the game!

Joey

Hey how is PlayStation Plus premium or whatever it’s called? Their version of game pass. I haven’t gotten a new gen. console yet and it sorta depends on this subject…

Will

Has Janet played Aztech? Or seen any upcoming games that also use a mesoamerican aesthetic?

Tyler Ohlew

Hey all! At 37-years-old, I find myself appreciative of the fact that I've seen so much of this hobby evolve and change from the NES to now. I find it easy to enjoy older games as well as new, and love the changes along the way. Do you think this knowledge and appreciation is important? Thanks! -Tyler

CptCobblePot

Hey Minnmaxers and a special hello to Jill, indie gaming extraordinaire! Always enjoy the conversation you bring the indie spotlight channel in the Discord! My question: With so many indies releasing this year how do you decide what to make time for? We have had so many bangers this year, every time I play one like 5 more amazing titles release! Also shoutout to The indie informer, which I will now be using as my indie news bible.

TheLastArcher

Hey MinnMax peeps! Do you think games can suffer from excess content? (Battle royales and mmo’s aside) I’ve seen a lot of my favorite games fall victim to what I call content bloat. Adding characters, gadgets, perks, weapons, maps, etc. to the point that the game is a shadow of what it was from the start. One of the biggest examples of this for me is Rainbow Six Siege. Played the game and was a huge fan from launch but now the character list and gadgetry are borderline absurd. Am I nuts?

DubZe27

Hey all, I was thinking about games I love and `A Short Hike` always comes to mind. First experienced it when I watched Kyle Bosman play it for a stream and loved the art style and music. Then I watched my fiancée play it and fell in love with it more. I realized that I never played it myself, but I still consider it one of my favorite games. My question is do you have a favorite game you've never actually played? - Will E.

Bob Buel

Howdy gang! And congrats to Jill on The Indie Informer! Super hyped for that. Do you think getting hit with a Hadouken would feel cold, like a chilled blast of compressed air, or hot like a fireball?

honeyboy

Hello MinnMax Crew, I was watching Collector Corner (Loved it!) and was impressed by all of the special variations of consoles that Kelsey has. It got me thinking that we really haven’t gotten many variations from the different console makers this gen so far. I was wondering what are some of your favorite console variations/special editions? Are there any you own or any you wish you owned? Thanks for the reading the question! P.s. I really hope Nintendo releases a special edition switch OLED for the release of Tears of the Kingdom.

So my wife and I just finished Edgerunners and we loved it! I'm a huge Studio Trigger fan because of their very distinct aesthetic and over the top animation/writing. They did that Star Wars Vision episode where the main character surfed on an X-Wing to slice a Star Destroyer in half with his light saber. I'd also recommend Gurren Lagann if you enjoyed Edgerunners. They have very some similar story beats. Anyway, this show got me to start playing Cyberpunk 2077. I'm only on act 2 but I think that world is a really interesting canvas for storytelling and by going with an anime format they're able to go wild with some of the cyberpsychosis effects and the wild action scenes. Is there another videogame world/universe that you'd like to see expanded through other medium? I'd love to see an Outer Worlds space buddy cop show.

Jared Piers

Hello Minnmax, Along with videogames, I like to listen to and keep up with a lot of music. In music, there are a lot of artists that I respect and recognize as good at what they do, but I can't personally get into them. However, this doesnt really happen with videogames. Generally, if I dont personally enjoy a game or a genre, I view it as bad. Do you guys do that as well? Is there a game that you recognize as good but dont enjoy? If not, why does this phenomenon not happen for games? Thanks.

It's Hugo's Nook

Hello there cohorts! So turns out the last game we picked to play on Cream of the Steam had ARG elements baked into it, which involved going through a website a finding our way through it to unravel the story of a sentient dog AI. This was my first time getting roped into an ARG without knowing beforehand and it was awesome. Have any of y’all had an experience with ARGs before?

I have a thought you guys missed about the days of the week. You all premised your answers (particularly you Monday folks) on the way our capitalist society currently structures the work week—but our 7-day week predates modern labor. The only reason your Monday answers make any sense is because we have made labor the center of our lives. Without the monday-Friday work/school week it has no basis. You know what I have two more points. Even if we accept the labor-first organization of the week, Sunday still makes good sense as the start because of the way we had winter breaks in school: your break started before Christmas and ended after new year, meaning you still have holiday at the start of the new year. In that pattern Sunday follows as the beginning of the week. Also third: I work in Arabic and Hebrew and both languages just number the days of the week so you’re essentially saying “we’ll meet on the third day of the week” and such. BOTH call Sunday “day one”—yom al-ahad and yom ekhad respectively. Plus if you’re in an Arabic speaking country the holy day is Friday (not named for the number but for the day’s activity) and the weekend is Friday Saturday with work beginning on Sunday (that’s for your idea of the labor-focused week). So… it’s Sunday.

Hello fellow gamers. Public service announcement, gaming is kinda poppin' off right now. The next 16 months are gonna be crazy. As the great philosopher king Sam Jackson said "hold on to your butts"

Hey Minns & Maxes, with God of War Ragnorak coming out nex soon, Sony Santa Monica has said this will be the final chapter of this iteration. I applaud them by not trying to stretch the story out and ‘milk’ the franchise. I also like that they have changed directors through the two games. With that said, what reboot(not remake) would you guys like to see that would breath new life into a favorite game(series) of yours. Thanks for the laughs as always!

Ian Switaj

Sup Chooms! A year ago after CP2077's disastrous launch word came out from the CDPR developers (via a Jason Schrier article, IIRC) that they told management that they needed until 2022 to fully deliver what they promised. With new interest in the game via the Edgerunners anime: 1. Other than "No Man's Sky", can you think of any game that has had as big a turnaround as CP2077? 2. Is it even worth getting in on the groundfloor on current gen AAA releases or is it better to wait the 2-3 years it takes for the definitive edition with all bug fixes and DLC included to release?

James Pies

Hey gang, In regards to God of War: Ragnarok, do we all assume it's a given that Kratos will defeat Thor and his hammer Mjölnir will be a new playable weapon? My hope is that this expectation is subverted and instead, Kratos shatters the hammer with the leviathan axe, causing it to become infused with electric power. The axe could then have the ability to switch elements between ice and lightning in real time, making for more dynamic combat and complicated puzzle solving without cumbersome inventory switch-ups. I'm no Jaffe or Barlog, but I think this is a smashing idea. Whoever agrees say "boy."

MrButtons

Howdy everyone! One of the things I loved most about God of War 2018 was the “No cut” camera. When it was first talked about ahead of release I was worried it wouldn’t feel right especially given the scale of the original series but it ended up being one of the most interesting parts of the game for me. Did this aspect stand out to you during your play through? Will you miss the single take style if God of War Ragnorok goes for a more traditional approach to cutscenes? Also happy birthday to Sarah!

Why hasn’t Dan tack ever a guest on the show I’d love to here him podcast with you all.
