hello ben and the content cohorts. any stories about mythical games growing up? i remember first hearing about god of war 1 at the lunch table as a freshmen in high school. The senior describing it made it sound like the most epic game ever made, and to his credit when I eventually played it, the opening boss fight delivered on that.

James Ford

G'day cohorts! When was the last time you replayed a game? Do you think if you weren't in the content creation industry you would replay more games?

WeGoGiant

Happy 3 years, MinnMax! Since you all had the best opening 3 years for a gaming podcast ever, it might be fun to consider which game console had the best opening three years of its library. It's a little tricky for older consoles that had different releases for each country, but here's some interesting ones to consider: The SNES has Link to The Past, SMW, and Final Fantasy 4 but doesn't get Super Metroid, Yoshi's Island, or FF6. The PS1 has FF7, Resident Evil, and Crash 1+2 but no Metal Gear, Spyro, or Silent Hill The N64 had all the big hits including SM64, OoT, and Goldeneye, but does not get Mario Party 2+3, Majora's Mask, or Paper Mario. The PS2 gets some big ones with MGS2, FF10, Silent Hill 2, GTA3, KH1, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, and Sly Cooper but basically none of the sequels which were also powerhouses. I could keep going all day since these are really fun to look up, just let me know if you want more examples to consider.

Cath

Helooooo what was your favorite Halloween costume this year? In your personal life or from celebrities 🤩

Michael Berry

Recently, I played Doom Eternal for the first time at my friend's house. I played the entire first level. Wow, what a power trip! That game is designed to make you feel bad ass between the snappy movement, crunchy and squishy sound effects, to the heavy metal soundtrack. The gameplay can be tough but the entire design of the game makes you truly feel like you could take on the hordes of hell. Which games have given you a similar power trip?

Troy Ellison

Hey Ben and the 'Horts. With God of War Ragnarok around the corner and the recent trend of Sony's remake strategy (i.e. The Last of Us Part 1, rumored Horizon Zero Dawn remake), it's gotten me thinking: could you see a future where the original God of War(s) get a remake (either just 1 or the original trilogy). This would be a remake project that actually make sense in the fact there's not a great way to play the original 2 games on modern hardware, and enough time has passed for a remake to make sense. But given where God of War has shifted in tone/character with the 2018 game, do you think a remake can stand with the new direction of the series or should it be left in the past?

Christian Jimenez

Hello MinnMax, BetterQuest Goal here! So in the latest Jacob Geller video he talks about how replaying recently Sekiro has led him to practice piano again. (Sorry for the spoilers). I have only ever taken 1 semester of classes at my local college and that was 10 years ago. But I have always wanted to really learn it and play it well. I've practiced it here and there but randomly not building a lasting habit yet. Last year I even bought the Hollow Knight song book but haven't made use of it. So I'm challenging myself to learn one of those songs by the end of the year and maybe that can make Silksong come out faster haha Thank you.

SuperMediocreMan

What’s up, MinnMax? My friends and I go to a trivia night every week, whether we do good or not, usually not so well, but there was on category that I destroyed in: animated voices. My question for each of you is, “What’s a category that you feel like you can dominate in a trivia night?”

Joe Kafchinski

Hey MinnMax - On his last podcast, Jeff Gerstmann mentioned during his God of War preview that his code was provided by Sony. He then spent a couple minutes talking about disclosure, how Sony is by far the biggest stickler about it, and how, while more disclosure is probably better, he thought Sony might go a little overboard (he figured everybody already knows that anyone with early access to the game is getting it from the publisher). Does that line up with your experience? Is "code provided by X" necessary? Insufficient?  What are your general thoughts and/or policies on disclosure, whether it's in regards to game codes or any other interactions with devs or publishers?

Kevin Kuper

Hello! Capcom offering a 3rd person mode for Village got me thinking, what's a game you would enjoy more if you switched perspectives? Thanks

RabidLime

hello Mighty Max, long time first time. i've listened to the show for the better part of a year. i just took the plunge on Patreon as i'm now at a place to vote with my wallet and you folks win. the community fostered here is fantastic; happiness is shared, and this place proves it. plus Minneapolis is awesome, and go us. question 1: with Sorny getting all butthurt that Uncle Phil and co trying to buy up Activision Blizzard, do you think this will sour Sony's push to bring first and second party Playstation titles to PC? i'm on PC only and have, as stated earlier, started voting with my wallet more - i've bought every former exclusive that's made its way over, finally getting the chance to play these revered titles. God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-Man, etc. (just waiting for Ghosts of Tsushima, Shadow of the Colossus, and Last of Us Part II). do you think the dookie will hit the fan before these titles make it over? cause i need Wander and Agro on ultrawide... i *need* it. question 2: where can i get some Tang 'round here?

CrabPalace

You can make any studio make any game - as long as it's a new IP. Who are you telling to do what??

CrabPalace

This morning I downloaded marvel snap. It's a great game. I played it too much. It was immediately unhealthy. This evening I uninstalled it. It's rare I get addicted to games but this was something else. Have you ever experienced this and what did you do to stop it?

Alex Vavouyios

Hello Big Macs! What do video games look like in 40 years? What game series do you hope is still around?

Garrett Wainstock

Which of these handheld consoles are acceptable to play on the toilet? Phone, Playdate, Steam Deck, Wii U gamepad

Garrett Wainstock

I have another question. Can we ask more than one question?

Malcolm Holliday

Howdy Minnmax, if you had to create a horror movie(or game) what tropes or themes would you hit on? Would it be a monster, psychological or gorey movie. or something else completely?

Benjamin

Hey MinnMax, unfortunately Will Wright has been in the news lately for weird NFT nonsense but it did get me thinking about his weird Bar Karma tv show that had people vote for stuff to go into the show. Did any of you watch that show? I watched a couple episodes and also voted for like one or two things but can't remember what.

Vilis

MinnMax Crew! I love Jennifer Hale in everything she does, and have never been a Bayonetta fan. Jennifer Hale now voicing Bayonetta does not make me want to play a third Bayonetta game which I would need to play 2 others to grok. So I don't understand why the studio went to Jennifer, who would certainly cost more (I assume because she's Jennifer Hale?) if the move doesn't pull in Jennifer Hale fans like myself. It feels like when Metal Gear Solid 5 switched to Kiefer Sutherland (who is more mainstream than Jennifer Hale, I understand, however) to voice Snake. Now, was this a clever Meta-move by Kojima to suggest that while it sounded like Big Boss, it actually WASN'T Big Boss the whole time? Maybe, but I can't see the Bayonetta team being that egregiously ambitious in switching to Jennifer Hale. Anyway, that's all my commentary on a game series I don't really have much interest in but respect the fans who worship at its skin-tight, hairy altar with their ankle pistols.

The Sleepy MailMan

Hey, Ben! This isn’t a question for the question segment specifically, but can you get Jacob’s opinion on the music of Bayonetta 3? There are some BOPS in there, but I’ve heard nary a mention from outlets on this.

Rob Goddard

As someone going through a gaming funk, I’m trying to focus this new free hour or two here and there once the kids go to bed to writing. I wrote a first draft of a book during quarantine and am trying my best to work through a second. What “other” hobbies does the crew have not related to media that you all can turn to when it all seems like too much?

Micah Tillman

Hey Ben! The MinnMax interview with Jake Solomon was awesome! What makes the difference between a good, satisfying interview and a bad, unsatisfying one? -Micah ("MIKE-uh") from Pennsylvania

Forrest With Two Rs

Hey Minnesota Maximum, I've seen a lot of even spoiler free comments about the Shadow of Rose DLC that say Rose greatly outshines Ethan as a RE protagonist, and that players hope she finds her way into a mainline game in the future. On the flip side, some folks are pretty disappointed with the writing of the Bat Family in Gotham Knights, which seems like it didn't succeed in focusing on a new narrative perspective in the same way RE has. What other secondary or supporting characters do you think outdo their leads and would those characters be successful in the leading role?

Zane Dukes

The Tennessee Volunteers are the #1 college football team in the country for the first time since 1998. What video game from 1998 would you say is #1 to celebrate the Volunteers? Top releases from 98 include: Ocarina of Time Metal Gear Solid Half Life Resident Evil 2 StarCraft Baldurs Gate Tekken 3 Banjo Kazooie Pokémon Red and Blue Grim Fandango Sonic Adventure Star Wars Rogue Squadron Go Vols! Minnmax is always welcome on Rocky top.

James Gameboy

Hey CLCs! Kelsey Lewin's brief bit about the Portland Retro Game Expo reminded me of one the talks I saw this year from Chris Kohler about "Square before Final Fantasy." He had a couple screenshots of their first actual RPG, called Genesis, and my immediate reaction was "oh, I gotta play that!" even though there is no doubt in my mind that it sucks. Are there images or concepts that immediately endear you to a game, even against your better judgement?

DJ

I can confirm that Bluey is a great show. They hide an Easter egg in most of the episodes called a "long dog". Some are easy to find and some are really hard. Me and my wife have become extremely competitive over finding them after we discovered them. What is your favorite Easter egg?

Johnnyboi

Hey Y’all, The Grammys nominations are coming up and for the first time ever their will be a Video Game music category. In its history there have only been two video game related music winners, Baba Yetu from Civilization 4 in 2011 and Meta Knight’s Revenge from Kirby in 2022. So why do you think it’s taken so long for video game music to be recognized?Who do you think will be the first nominees for the new category?Grammy deadline eligibility is the end of September.

Tactics Ogre. Tactics Ogre? Tactics Ogre! So, any cohorts excited for Tactics Ogre Reborn? Anytime Matsuno is involved with a project, I'm all in. Tactics Ogre, Vagrant Story, Crimson Shroud, he makes such a specific feeling story that you just can't get anywhere else. On a related note, who's your favorite game designer?

Nick from Atlanta

Hey MinnMax, Apropos of nothing in particular going on, if you could just remove one social media platform from existence, which (if any) would you pick? Do you just completely change history and take out GeoCities right at the start? I've got 13 types with examples here, shamelessly taken from Wikipedia: Blogs (ex. Huffington Post, Boing Boing) Business networks (ex. LinkedIn, XING) Enterprise social networks (ex. Yammer, Socialcast) Forums (ex. Gaia Online, IGN Boards) Microblogs (ex. Twitter, Tumblr) Photo sharing (ex. Flickr, Photobucket) Products/services review (ex. Amazon, Elance) Social bookmarking (ex. Delicious, Pinterest) Social gaming (ex. Mafia Wars) Social network sites (ex. Facebook, Instagram) Video sharing (ex. YouTube, Vimeo) Virtual worlds (ex. Second Life, Twinity) Thanks, Nick from Atlanta

Hi Minnmax! If you didn’t see, the slay the spire board game hit 1 million on kickstarter on day 1. There seems to be a pretty good track record for video games transitioning to tabletop with resident evil, horizon, civilization to name a few. Any game franchises you would like to see make the jump the jump to tabletop?

YARF

Are there any Halloween best practices or generally accepted etiquette? If your porch light is on, it means you are a devout participant with candy. If there are no other elements objectively indicating participation in this sacred hallow wicked night, no light, no one out front, then leave the house alone… Then why did multiple houses with lights on and decorations have no candy?! Why did people knock on my door at 9:57 PM for candy, even though everything was off outside!? What is the trick or treat window? 5:45PM to 9PM right?! Where were all the trick or treaters!?!?? I mourn for the future generations… trunk or treating, and just buying their candy from Amazon… *sigh*

Bowsie

Good Day MinnMax, I’ve recently been listening to my Halloween Playlist which includes Dead Island’s intro song “Who Do You Voodoo” by Josef “J7” Lord and Christopher H Knight. I don’t typically listen to rap or hip hop but this catchy yet gruesome song has me boppin. What are some video game songs or soundtracks that got you into a music genre you don’t normally listen to? -Bowsie

Graham Jones

Hey Min Maxers, Recently I have been trying to play lots of different games at once to help get through my backlog but I have found it really hard to bounce between different games and make consistent progress with all of them. Therefore, it had me thinking... How many games do you guys keep in your rotation at once? Do you stick to similar genres? How do you decide when you play each game (mood vs time of day etc)? Thanks for the consistently high quality content every week!

Jonathan Willis

Hey you Mr. Leo Vader! Stop being so funny! Your latest video with the “and that’s a threat” made me choke laugh I thought I might die! No question just thanks for the laugh man.

Helmut K.

Hey Minnmaxers! I’ve been curious about listening to Kojima’s podcast, Brain Structure. Have any of you listened? If so, would you recommend it to someone who enjoys his games or for those who don’t?

Dustin Guarino

Hey Minn Maxers! Long time listener, first time writer. I just wanted to shoutout Brian who wrote in a couple weeks ago giving some love to Star Citizen. It’s nice to know I’m not the only SC fan in the community! I second everything he said but I disagree that SC has little to show for it. I’m an original backer and have been following the game very closely since the 3.9 patch in 2020. We’re now at 3.17 and the amount I’ve seen it grow in that time has been huge. I do feel like the wider gaming community is unfair to it about how long it is taking, especially given the scope of the project. It’s clear that Cloud Imperium Games made some mistakes early on that set them back, but trust me when I say: Their development is humming now, and I believe it will be in a beta/1.0 state sooner than people realize. So, here’s some facts that I think people should consider: • They have a clear vision for what they’re building. (They’re stopped adding new features to their GDD a long time ago.) • They’re developing two games in parallel that share the same engine tech. SC and Squadron 42. S42 is a single player game but is still pretty massive in scope. • They have over 1000 people (and growing), working on these games. • They’re maintaining a live service which requires a certain amount of polish that is not normal for a game in active development. This adds time to the project but will make it a better game in the end due to player feedback. • They release quarterly patches with new features, systems and content. • Next year they will release the alpha 4.0 patch which will be a massive milestone. It will feature: 1. A completely reconstructed back end that is designed to dynamically scale the player count. 2. A completely reconstructed renderer that will take advantage of modern hardware to increase game performance. 3. An entirely new solar system that is over twice the size of the current one. • With these foundational pieces in place, basically the hardest part is out of the way, and they will be marching toward a beta release in 2-3 years (my estimate). Ben, I know you appreciate production quality, well this game is overflowing with it! Anyway, sorry for the long-winded piece. Love what y’all do! -Dustin from Seattle

Patrick Hughes

Salutations good MinnMaxians! As we are on the verge of possibly the final "Fall Back" Daylight Savings ever (if such passes law in the US to end this time old tradition next year), let's celebrate the relevant topic with a discussion - What are some of your favorite games to feature time travel?

AnAttackCorgi

Howdyho Panel! Can y'all please explain the differences between gaming journalism websites? What makes each publication unique, between GameSpot, Kotaku, GameInformer, IGN, etc? I've known about these outlets for such a long time but I can't explain what makes one unique from the other (hopefully that's not a callous thing to say). Cheers and thanks for the clarification!

Leroy Brown-Baldock

G'day Janet and the Lads. Do you drink enough water? I'm a correctional officer and work with a character who tells me he hasn't had even a glass of water in years, just gets all his water from his evening brandy, coffees and food?! WILD I drink water all day and sometimes I feel it's still not enough. Anyone use a schedule to stay hydrated? Cheers big ears

Corgyll

Hi there. With the release of the Resident Evil expansion and Janet's talk about "hateplaying" games I'd like to hear if you've ever completed something despite having hated it at first. I for one thought Resident Evil Village's story was laughably stupid and made me enjoy it a lot less, but the gameplay was fun enough for me to complete it (and buy the dlc!). I also found my favorite book series ever by sticking through a book I hated. Twice. I had to read it again because I really wanted to like it. (The Malazan Book of the Fallen, you should read it!)

Hugo Aguilar

Hey Ben and the Minnmaxers, I just rolled credits on Far Cry 6. This is the first Ubisoft game I finished since AC Blackflag. When was the last time you finished a Ubisoft game?

Joshua

Hi Everyone, When you are listening to a podcast and a person pauses slightly looking for a word do you try to guess the word to yourself?

Jeremy McPhail

Hey Ben and the Max - I have something troubling me. I recently read an article about the studio Mundfish about the release of Atomic Heart . . . Isn't this game created by a Russian studio? Are people okay with this? Have they denounced Putin? Game looks cool, but not sure how I feel about this. What are your thoughts?

Spencer

Hello Cohorts: I was wondering how you all prefer to make your decisions when a game presents you with the obligatory modern skill tree or even in a more traditional RPG. Are there certain stats you favor habitually? Does it depend on how the combat works? I tend to go on instinct based on how the game feels and how things have been going up to that point: if I'm dying a lot I will improve my health; if the character feels a bit sluggish I might add a dash move if it's available. Any hard and fast rules or is it different for every game?

Fatt Mish

Hi Mins and Maxers. Outside of maybe guitar hero, have you ever done something in a game that made you interested in trying that activity in the real world?

Nathan Paxton

Hello Minn Max crew. Gotham Knights seems to be the latest in a long line of games, movies, etc. that becomes trendy to dunk on on social media. While there’s plenty of criticism to be made, many things found on social media seem to be mean spirited, and designed to paint the game in as bad a light as possible. Why do you think this happens?

OneArmedWolf

Not so much a question, just wanted to say how much I appreciated Jacob’s no-holds-barred take on the new Call Of Duty. I’ll admit I was kind of horrified to hear that some people are only now realising there might be something a tad problematic about COD’s gung-ho take on foreign military expansion. It’s way too easy to dismiss things because they’re normalised, but considering COD is effectively military propaganda for the most destructive imperialist force in the world, I’d say calling it evil doesn’t even do it justice. By no means do I think people should stop playing their games and I’m not suggesting every release requires geo-political contextualisation. But People should know about the horrors their country has committed (especially Americans!) and I appreciate Jacob taking an actual impassioned stance on it more than I can say, it’s important! Love the pod, y’all soundtrack my week and have done for years.

Mcdoeswell

Not that this comparison hasn’t been made, but does the panel (Janet specifically) think that Gotham Knights would have had a better reception if it was a Ninja Turtles game rather than be a Batman-verse game? It plays a lot like an arcade brawler, the colors and personalities match(ish), and wouldn’t be compared to the Arkham games. Also, I hope we can now get an open world TMNT game after this.

Emmett Watkins Jr.

Howdy y'all! Longtime listener, but first time writing in since the Modern Warfare Remastered replay way back on GI. One question, one follow up: A few weeks ago someone asked what's the worst injury you've gotten from playing a game. I wanted to share the fact that I pinched a nerve while playing God of War 2018. Basically, many of the chairs we have in our basement are from my grandparent's house and don't have the same support as they did in the 70s. I took the day off to play the game and sat in that chair for nearly 8 hours straight playing. Once I got up, I realized I couldn't walk without a sharp pain on the lower right side of my back. Hope that wasn't too long, and congrats on getting on the Game Awards committee! -Emmett from Dacula, GA Went to the ER the next day and they prescribed medication and exercises for me to do over the following months. Couldn't work for 10 days and walked with a cane for much of that time. I'm fine now, but if I sleep or sit weird for long enough, the pain comes back for a bit. And now, the question: If you could swap a yearly franchise (CoD, FIFA, etc) w/ a non yearly franchise (Final Fantasy, TLoU, etc.), which combo would yield the most interesting fruit with the difference in dev time? I'd say Madden & From Soft's games. Most of From's games so similar that cranking one out in a year wouldn't decrease quality much imo, and Madden has had so many swings w/ its Story mode that I'd love to see what they could do with time to flesh out a massive football narrative, like a Friday Night Lights synario.
