What fictional characters death hit you so hard it has stayed with you to this day?

Mike Lynch

Why do we have a social contract where axes are just loose in hardware stores for anybody to grab? Kitchen knives have covers or are locked into a block. Axes are just ready to go.

Malcolm Holliday

Hey Minnmax, are there any genres, worlds or tropes from movies/books/cinema that Video games haven't really dived into that you think could flourish as a game?

Ramses Garcia

Ben you can’t limit the codes you give in extra life. I donate every year hoping for a code. I tried new games because of it. So, what are you playing for thanksgiving?

MickManga

Hope you all are having a good day. I am convinced that Square Enix might just think 2022 is the year of the JRPG. So I compiled a list of all their games. The question is can the MinnMax Crew name them all? Triangle Strategy Final Fantasy Origins Stranger Of Paradise Voice Of Cards The Forsaken Maiden Chrono Cross The Radical Dreamers Edition Voice Of Cards The Beasts Of Burden Live A Live Various Daylife The Diofield Chronicle Valkyrie Elysium Harveststella Star Ocean The Divine Force Tactics Ogre Reborn Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion Romancing Saga Minstrel Song Dragon Quest Treasures I think that's all as far as I could find. Though a game may have slipped through the cracks.

Do ya'll like gear stats and numbers in your story games like Ragnarok? Or The Last of Us 2 approach with more streamlined progression and less to noodle with? I've heard people complain that GOW has too much going on, but personally it makes me more invested in the combat. I remember last of us 2 I never really cared about the weapons and skills, I was just mainlining the story so it felt like less of a video game to me.

Andy Dwyer

When playing games for the deepest dive where you have set places to stop do you find it hard to pace yourself and not keep going?

Hello CLCs and our esteemed community member! Nintendo gave a quarterly financial report to investors this week and provided an interesting tidbit from Miyamoto talking about backwards compatibility. Quote, "In the past, we provided a service known as the 'Virtual Console' that allowed users to play older video games on new consoles with newer hardware. As long as the hardware remained unchanged, those games could continue to be played." He continued, "Recently, however, the development environment has increasingly become more standardized, and we now have an environment that allows players to enjoy older video games on newer consoles more easily than ever before." [However,] "Nintendo's strength is in creating new video game experiences, so when we release new hardware in the future, we would like to showcase unique video games that could not be created with pre-existing hardware." What are your thoughts on this? Does this more or less confirm that future Nintendo hardware will abandon Switch software and start fresh like every generation? Do I just need to hoard every Nintendo console I ever purchase or simply rely on emulation to access Nintendo's back catalogue at my leisure??? Why must Nintendo punish us!!!!

Ayy Ben and co! According to Wikipedia Minecraft is the highest selling game ever with 238 million copies sold! Do you think this will ever be topped, and what game could do it? Do you think if they released a Minecraft 2 it would sell nearly this well? Also, I found it interesting that all the games are estimates except for Pac Man which seems to have a much more exact sales number. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games

Hello Minnesota Ben and the (Honorary) Minnesotans! A primary mission of MinnMax is to spread Minnesota Awareness and Appreciation. In honor of the latest Deepest Dive -- and Minnesota's viking heritage -- could you teach us non-Minnesotans how to say "Ragnarok" the Minnesotan way? (Does the "Rag" in "Ragnarok" rhyme with "bag" or "beg"? Or is it something in between? The world needs to know how to say "ag" the Minnesotan way!)

I played some splatfest over the weekend and realized, I think I hate turf wars in splatoon. I love all the other modes but turfwar takes too long and it really just comes down to the last 45 seconds. Unfortunately there are some gear-enhancing items that you get for playing so I stuck with it(only until Champion). Did you all have any games or challenges/quests where you hate-played it for the reward?

Jonathan R

Greetings Minnesota Maxers! 1) With Ben's head shaved, does that make him the MinnMax Professor X? 2) Elden Ring and God of War seem set to sweep just about every Game of the Year award this year, and deservedly so. However, what would your pick for game of the year be if were unable to choose from the ones nominated by the Game Awards. Thanks!

Jared Piers

Hello All I know you are doing the Ragnarok Deep Dive right now, but I thought this was a better place to talk about this. Been playing through the game and it may be the most frictionless gaming experience Ive ever had. So many parts of the game seem to be designed to keep you moving forward at a steady pace, to a fault in a lot of cases. Have game designers gone too far? Do you think things will continue this way until the game is basically playing itself or will people one day say enough is enough? Thanks

Dan Gorman

What game series or character deserves a left-turn genre spin-off? I'm thinking along the lines of how Kirby had games like Kirby Pinball Land, Kirby Block Ball and Dream Course. Or more recently the Mario/Rabbits turn-based games. What mash-ups like that would you want to see?

TRUEfoe

What'sup MinnMax! Settle this one between my wife and I before she kills me,

Johan Karner

Hello. What is the best way to shimmy along a narrow cliff edge? In plauge tale they have their back agianst the wall, in god of war they face the wall. Which way is the best?

merkmobile

Howdy crew, what is your top snack of 2022? For me it's been a big year for Dot's Pretzels.

Fred Dinovo

Missed Joke(?) Opportunity, Whenever AnAttackCorgi writes in rather than read the question you should growl and then bark angrily. Thank you

James Gameboy

CLCs, I have terrible news: I think I like Sonic Frontiers more than Breath of the Wild. Yes, the story is bad and it looks terrible on my Switch and the menus and upgrade paths are confusing, but man, running around in that world is pure joy, and the shrine levels are actually fun and worth replaying. What are other games that are fun in spite of it all?

Wolfgang Klotz

Hey MinnMax, We're creating the options menu for the human body! If your body had options that you could toggle on and off or low/med/high, what options would you want? Set overall difficultly to Easy? Sleep/wake as a toggle button? Fertility as an On/Off option would be a game changer. Thoughts?

This week, November 18 marks the 10th anniversary of the release of the Wii U. While it had some wonderful games and unique features, it's one of Nintendo's biggest commercial failures - and many would attribute that failure to its name. What would you have named the Wii U to give it a better chance at success?

Jeorin

Hi everybody! There was some debate during the Game Award Nominations over Elden Ring being up for best narrative. I completely agree, but am curious... What makes up the narrative for a video game? How does this differ from lore, or is lore part of the narrative? Cheers! And great job during Extra Life!

Travis Brinkley

Hey MinnMax, I was relistening to some of the 2021 game of the year debate and had a quick question: 1) do games get too much credit for novelty? Ex: Hitman got dismissed because it wasn’t innovative enough, but it only needs to be compared to the other games on the list, not hitman 1 or 2. 2) more of an idea than a question: when you get to the two tens, leave them all unnumbered then rank as you discuss them (the first game is #1 by default, then the second game is either #1 or #2, etc) to rank based on the passion of the discussion. (Sorry if it’s too long for the podcast, I figured this would be the best spot. Loved the extra life stream!)

TheUnchartedWolf

What's up MinnMax. It's that time of year, award season! I checked out the Game Awards nominees with some friends and they made an interesting prediction. They stated that God of War would win because there is a western game bias. It got me thinking, does the games media have a bias towards western games?

Rob Goddard

Hello Crew, As a father with very little time, I recently changed my gaming habits to no longer focus on playing all the games in a series, chasing achievements, and allowing myself to walk away from anything that's just not clicking. The old me would have thrown up to see this new way of enjoying the hobby, but I feel this has been such a cathartic move and I am again just enjoying games instead of stressing about the backlog. Anyone else on the team have any changes or practices to their gaming habit that has improved their mental well being?

Luca Alberti

Hey MinnMax! Provocatory question: How many games do you need to play in a given genre to be considered an expert? And what genre do you think is easiest to become an expert of? Of course the games you chose and the way you play them influence the experience, but I wondered if you could pinpoint a threshold, as in "If you plaed 30 platformers, you probably start noticing patterns, what works and what doesn't"

Enrique Leo Diaz

Hello everyone! Pizza, tacos, ramen or burger for late night meal. What do you choose?

Harrison Holt

Hey MinnMax! It was pointed out to me today, that in 9 years of The Game Awards, Xbox has never had a exclusive get a Game of the Year Nomination. Are there any Xbox exclusives from over the years that you think possibly should have made the cut?

Keaton Johnson

Hello MinnMax crew and CalamityNolan! A point made by Ben during Party Chat was that he thinks he enjoys reacting to a live event in the MinnMax studio with cohorts more so than being at the event and acting professional with a "nice shirt." Which got me thinking, is there value to having a live, in-studio audience? Is there some sort of energy that is lost without having a crowd watching the presentation? My personal opinion: a lot of cost, risk and ecological impact to hold these live event but I do see a substantial "energy" difference between Sony's fake-crowd pandemic-era conferences vs the live E3s of days past.

Hello BOY! Hanson, Leo Valkyrie, Janet Midgard-cia, and Ressurrection Stone contributor CalamityNolan! With the new God of War, I have decided to share an amusing bit of etymology (well, I find it amusing): The "crat" in Bureaucrat is derived from the Greek word "Kratos" which in Koine Greek (aka New Testament Greek) means Might and Power, Mighty with Great Power, etc. Bureau of course derives from the French word for Desk. Ergo, an accurate picture dictionary definition of Bureaucrat could be Kratos behind a desk screaming out orders. That all being said, isn't God of War 2018 just a very long "Bring your BOY to Work Day"?

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and Friennds, Everyone knows free food tastes better. What’s the best meal you didn’t have to pay for?

Kees ('Case') Mulder

The Grammys have added a category for Video Game Score. Guess how many of the five nominations they have in common with the Game Awards nominations for best score? Answer: Zero. McCreary has a nomination in both, but for different games!

Christian F.

Is an arrow a universal symbol? Do you think people of any part of the world, or even aliens from other worlds look at an arrow and know it’s a direction symbol?

Bryce Blackmore

What other hobby do you have which keeps you from playing games? For me its choosing between playing guitar and games.

Tokyo Game Life

Hi MinnMax, I recently attended Digital Games Expo in Tokyo which is an event showcasing Japanese indie games. While some were near completion, others were years away from release or merely playable as a tech demo. When do you think indie developers should show off their game for the first time? Is there value in letting the public play the game when it’s still early in its conceptual phase or should developers wait to show a more polished, finalized version?

Interrotta

Hello Minnmax Crew! Smak in the discord raved about Signalis, so I picked it up and delayed playing Ragnarok until I finished it. So if I may recommend a game everyone should try before GOTY talks, Signalis! It’s a top down survival horror title in a dystopian sci fi setting, and I hope Konami lets the devs (Rose Engine) make a Silent Hill game because they nailed the atmosphere and tension that the first 4 Silent Hills had.

Loud EEL

Hey Ben and Cohorts, After listening to your Party Chat conversation about Elden Ring being nominated for Best Narrative at The Game Awards, I was reading my young kids a bedtime story beyond their comprehension. It made me think, are we all just playing Elden Ring like toddlers looking at pictures and hearing words and is there a niche for Dr. Seuss lore videos on YouTube Kids?

Tanner Methven

Hey Minnmax Crew, We know them now as the Game Awards, but 10 years ago was the last time they were called the Spike Video Game Awards. I have a simple game to act as a quick refresher: I name a category, you guess who won. However, to add a challenge, I’m not giving you the nominees. 1. Game of the Year -Telltale’s the Walking Dead 2. Best Graphics -Halo 4 3. Best Performance by a Human Male (you can just name the character) -Dameon Clarke as Handsome Jack in Borderlands 2 4. Best DLC -Skyrim: Dawnguard 5. Character of the Year (it’s not Handsome Jack) -Claptrap in Borderlands 2 6. Most Anticipated Game -Grand Theft Auto 5

PoorAndCurly

Hey Ben and crew, 2022 has been a standout year for adventure games. Norco, Citizen Sleeper, Return to Monkey Island, and now Pentiment have been received very well. What oft neglected or smaller genre of game do you predict will blossom in 2023?

James Ford

Hello Ben, Cohorts and special guest! How do you feel about anti spoiler culture? While having things not spoiled is nice, I think it was a bit ridiculous how much of the pre release discussion and reviews of God of War nearly all outlets felt the need to go out of thier way to say "no spoilers, I promise we won't even talk about what kind of soil Kratos walks on in the game". I feel like some people have really blown what a spoiler is out of proportion.

Patrick Hughes

Aloha MinnMax peoples! Seeing The Game Award nominees, I was surprised to see Sonic Frontiers get passed up for the Music / Score category as I was listening to its soundtrack online ahead of its release and it is pretty fire. Any omissions in the nominees you'd like to give a quick shoutout for? And bonus question - Do you ever listen to a game's soundtrack before its release, either to get hyped or just out of curiosity? I find it's another fun way to preview a game's vibes. For instance, not that I wasn't already interested in playing Chicory: A Colorful Tale last year, but listening to that soundtrack instantly moved that game to the top of my most anticipated list for when it hit Switch. So so good. ^__^

Knobby Buckles (Dave)

Missed joke alert! During Elise's GALOT, about the guy who holds the Guinness World Record for most rock skips, when you said, "I would have guessed Neil," but you should have said, "I would have guessed Skip!"

AnAttackCorgi

Ahoy 1/2billionth of the planet! What’s your favourite story overheard from a veteran of the games or reporting industry?

Jeremy McPhail

Hey Ben and the Maxxers - It's that time of the year again. . . What is your favorite way to enjoy Thanksgiving leftovers? Also, please bring back Minnsnax. Maybe throw it on as a Patreon goal or something to vote on New Show Plus?

Rory Gladstone

Which video game characters talking severed head would you like to have strapped to your belt to offer you advice and anecdotes as you went about your business?

alexok37

Not a question, but last week you guys mentioned stenographers and wondered if they are good at video games. My wife is a stenographer! She is also very good at video games!!! Although oddly not good at PC controls, so maybe it's unrelated.

Colin Burch

Extra life is a charity stream and shipping is costly for a small outlet. Would the community be open to paying for the shipping of their auction wins? Probably no y not all winners but I bet some would be happy to cover the cost. Wasn’t able to watch much this year but look forward to next!

Andy Dwyer

Congrats on the great extra life stream. Do you watch any other charity streams for fun or to get ideas? I know most outlets have done something for extra life this month and currently desert bus for hope is going on.

Joshua

Hi Everyone, Who ya got for the Best Game Soundtrack Grammy? My bet is Guardians of the Galaxy

Neill Smith

If Leo vader could spend 10 minutes talking non-stop about the Freelancer mode technical test in Hitman 3 I would be so happy.
