Hi maxers, I rarely play mobile games but I recently found one that I'm eager to share and maybe help spread by word of mouth (and no I have no affiliation with the makers of it). The game is called Slice & Dice, currently available on Google play store and itch.io. It's a turn based "dice builder" with similarities to Into the Breach and Slay the Spire. It has character progression paths, items with dice modifiers, intimidating boss encounters, and lots of replayability. I think Kyle and Jacob would be particularly keen on it. Since Kyle is the resident mobile gaming genius, has he possibly tried it already and care to speak on it?

Hi! If you were able to add any kind of new category to The Game Awards, what would it be and who would win it this year?

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and Friennds, What’s your favorite underwater level? Oftentimes they are players least favorite levels. What makes your favorite your favorite? Mine is exploring Vegas in Horizon

Hey CLCs, What game do you think has benefitted the most from streaming, YouTube Let’s Play’s, etc.? I am sure Fortnite and Imposters will be brought up here, but I think the best answer might actually be Minecraft? Excited to listen to your thoughts, thanks and let me be the first to say HAPPY HOLIDAY’s MINNMAX!

Hi Double M! I was a young lad when Super Mario Sunshine came out and was under the impression that everyone thought it was amazing. Years later, I was shocked to discover everyone actually thinks it’s bad! What’s a game you spent the longest time thinking was good when it turns out the general consensus was the opposite?

Greetings MinnMaximilians, When is the last time a video game encouraged you to try a new hobby? Thanks to the Sonic Frontiers soundtrack and Cyber Monday I bought a mini synthesizer to learn how to make electronic music! I don't know how to make music and haven't played piano since high school, but it should be a fun learning experience! For great music from this year, the Cyber Space songs from the game collectively make an outstanding EDM album, so I'll post some of my favorites that inspired my purchase: Cyber Space 1-4: Genshi: https://youtu.be/jACrujDZC-k Cyber Space 2-2: Heavenly Sky: https://youtu.be/sEiCee1Ys5U Cyber Space 4-5: Arrow of Time (has a part that sounds like Gangnam Style lol) https://youtu.be/ggmkvBDYAZM

Howdy, folks, In this definitely-either-hyperbolic-or-melodramatic NintendoLife article (https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2022/11/random-player-discovers-easy-way-to-get-1000-steps-in-pokemon-scarlet-and-violet), the author bitterly laments the new Scarlet/Violet evolution mechanic that requires you to walk 1,000 steps with three of the new species to get them to evolve. However (like the twitter commenter at the end of the article), I actually really appreciated it! For my Pawmo, since it was a staple of my team early on, I was going all out, sending it into the field left and right to bully every hapless Pokemon in our path, and yet, because it was only taking a step here and there before absolutely pummeling things, it wasn't until mid-50s that it finally evolved. Once it did, I turned my attention to Rellor, a tiny beetle perpetually rolling a ball of mud around. After such an aggressive approach to the first several hours of the game, I decided that Rellor and I would simply traverse the snowy mountains in the north. No battling at all, if I could help it! The fact that Rellor made me have to walk particularly slowly, coupled with watching it in its Sisyphean act of literally pushing a boulder up and down the mountain re-instilled in me a deeper understanding that sometimes, progress and growth don't always come as quickly as we want, but that it is possible to find enjoyment even in that process. The area which was once bitter, inhospitable, and full of dangerous Pokemon far above Rellor's level became a peaceful journey with scenic vistas, the gentle piano score I'd been too busy racing through the game to hear, and families of wild Pokemon mostly doing their own thing. For once, I felt in and of the Pokemon world, rather than just plummeting forward to the next objective. It was my single favorite experience in the game so far (and I'm actually enjoying the game quite a lot overall!). So my question is this: Have you ever encountered a game mechanic that most people didn't seem to like or appreciate, but which you got something out of on a personal level? Thanks!!

Hey MinnMaxers! l recently managed to cross off from my backlog the movie Fargo and loved it! Being the only people I know based in Minnesota who else is better to be asked: do people really talk like that over there? Is it a thing of the past? Is Yeah the Minneapolis comma?

Vilis

MinnMax is so named because of the first 4 letters in Minnesota, but what if you were in a Different State? We have WashMax, which I assume is a cleaning podcast. MainMax, which is a Podcast covering topics in the Mainstream. AlasMax, a Podcast about regrets. ConnMax, a Podcast all about Conventions happening around the country. MissMax, a Podcast about notable moments in history where something almost happened that could have drastically changed history. It gets complicated with all the New, North, and South names, but can the MinnMax crew come up with anymore good ones?

Heyo, the new posters for the Mario movie came out and I have a real question here. What does it mean to "Get Luigi'd?". Did I miss the game with the iconic catch phrase of "You just got Luigi'd?" The posters: https://www.reddit.com/gallery/z7dl6k

BetterQuest goal: accomplished! My Playdate game, Distill! My Beating Heart! is now available on itch.io for a mere dollar. There are a few minor improvements I'd like to make to it in the future, but for now I am pleased to have made a fun and somewhat educational game about making whiskey. Thanks CLC's!

Hey Minnmaxers, What are the worst video game mechanics that just make you pull your hair out? For me it’s any escort mission. I was playing Jak 2 the other day, and it has one of the worst escort missions. It has an instant fail mechanic for when the escorted character, a child, gets hit once. It’s so frustrating to replay over and over when you inevitably fail. What game mechanics drive you crazy?

Will Music AI have a strong effect on the gaming music industry? I could see more and more game companies preferring to use a cheaper alternative of AI generated music for a larger percentage of their soundtrack. Squeezing the market even more for musicians in the gaming industry. Do you see this trend growing? What percentage of gamers will “care” about music that is AI generated versus human created? For famous tracks and big cinematic moments of course - but battle music, etc?

Boie

Hey Minnmax crew Did you also feel cathartic watching Mario getting beat up in the new Super Mario movie trailer? Is there something wrong with me? I also want to nominate the soundtrack for Stray for best video game music this year. Super lowkey lofi synth melodies that always felt curious.

Alex K.

I'll throw in some Kirby and the forgotten land for great music this year. Nintendo has always been great at mixing in old themes into new songs and this Meta knight track is a prime example. https://youtu.be/SiGLKz0aGcQ

Hey Crew, I've been playing GoW Ragnarok lately. If you could have one of the cohorts on your hip like Kratos does Mimir, which one would you choose and why would it be Leo?

PhillyYeetSteak

Hey all, All the time, people describe games or parts of a game as "underbaked." Can a game be "overbaked," and if so what would that mean?

Chandler

Have you ever shaken up a can of pop (or soda or whatever you call it over there) so that an unsuspecting victim would have it spray all over them when they opened it? How did it feel?

MrButtons

Howdy Cohorts! I recently rolled credits on Immortality after deciding to check it out based on y’all’s discussion about the game. Despite not fully understanding what was going on throughout most of the game, I really enjoyed my time with it and found myself diving down a long rabbit hole of online discussions, including Jacob and Leo’s spoiler video, to try and get a better understanding of what I just played or the numerous things I may have missed. My question is what game has led you to spend more time consuming it through online media or discussions, as opposed to actual time spent playing the game?

Hello MinnMax! With 2023 right around the corner, I just want to plug that Fantasy Critic will be starting soon! If you think you can draft the best unique roster of 2023 games to outscore your fellow MinnMax community members, you should go to the Discord and 1) grab the Fantasy Critic role from the "role assignments" channel, and 2) check out the "community gaming" channel for the latest updates. Feel free to ask any questions you have in that channel. Leagues are currently forming, and our drafting event will be the weekend of December 10th/11th. And if you aren't currently in the Discord, did you know you can get access to the amazing community and compete in Trivia Tower for only $2 a month? Thanks, Nick from ̶A̶t̶l̶a̶n̶t̶a̶ Fantasy Critic

I've recently gotten into this GQ YouTube playlist called 10 Essentials that outlines what items famous people can't live without. Based on the GQ YouTube show of the same name, what are each panellist's 3 essentials you take with you everywhere or use all the time? At least one has to be gaming related.

Garrett Wainstock

I recently pulled my head out of my butt for some air and took another look at my gaming boycott list. It's long and vague, but among the obvious stinkers are EA and Ubisoft. Have either of these companies done enough to address harassment, crunch, predatory monetization tactics, or them being general stinky stinkos? Thannks!

AnAttackCorgi

Also, I know this ain't a game soundtrack but the Wakanda Forever Soundtrack is...very good

Shout out to the TMNT Shredders Revenge OST

I said I wasn’t going to do it. I promised myself it wasn’t worth it. Yesterday my willpower broke and I finally downloaded Vampire Survivor on PC…this game needs to be regulated by the FDA because it’s a drug. Is there any chance it makes the Two Tens for 2022?

Dennis M.

The soundtrack of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is incredible and one of my favorite tracks is the boss battle theme, specifically the version with the flute, which goes even harder when you know the story context of why the flute is part of it, but that's a spoiler. Ahoy good MinnMax! Love your music episodes and looking forward to listening to some new tunes! One of my favorites from this year is from the Chrono Cross Radical Dreamer's Edition, specifically the Termina (Another World) theme - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOP0ReVE3_8 My question for the week - Have your expectations for a game ever affected your opinion of said game? Case in point for myself, God of War (2018) blew me away that I had such high expectations for this sequel and ended up mildly disappointed with Ragnarok, not that I didn't have fun but it didn't quite have the same impact as the last game. Conversely, I had very tempered expectations for Sonic Frontiers cuz, well, Sonic, and have found myself surprisingly impressed despite the occasional jankiness. How do you manage expectations? Please share your wisdom less my expectations for Tears of the Kingdom become the next victim as they climb ever skyward.

My pick for best song this year: Ace Combat's composer remixed Danger Zone for the Top Gun Maverick DLC crossover in AC7. While I have the oppertunity to slip in an "every game is interesting": Ace Combat 7 was delayed for a month because the games director didn't think there was a cool enough song in the (already delayed) game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeMBJq6WgFk However as someone who had Gen 4 as my "coming of age" pokemon games, Battle! Volo (Arceus' 'final' boss music and Cynthia's theme remix) was definitely my favorite track this year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yqm7vrCp-g&t=110s

Why is the criteria for Minnmax's patreon goals always the number of members and not a dollar amount? Is it a long term strategy that has been shown to work out better? Just curious. I'm sure there are people in the community that would raise their pledge to meet some of the goals if it were an option.

Virgil B

A lot of times I get so caught up in playing the game that I don’t really notice the music. This is especially true for boss fights and their accompanying themes. I usually notice the music more when I have time to soak it in during slower gameplay moments. I want to appreciate the music, but I also want to perform well enough to not die! Are there any songs that you missed while playing the game and only noticed when you listened to the soundtrack afterwards?

BH9K

I finished Xenoblade Chronicles 3 a few days ago. Love the soundtrack. The Battlefield - Scramble of Life track is one of my favorites. Perfect way to bring you into the world of XC3. https://youtu.be/Sn0uIri-YSI

Hey gang, Not sure it's the best video game music I've heard all year, but Nobody Saves the World had some serious earworms. Plus the natural grind of form unlocking in that game meant I heard those roaming around and boss battle jams A LOT. So much so I had them in my head constantly when doing chores or when there were any periods of silence really. I loved that title to death, but man did it turn into a podcast game eventually. For my question; has there been any game soundtrack this year you found yourself hearing in your head constantly like me with this one? God of War Ragnarok is a strong runner up for me also. Nothing like washing dishes to some Bear McCreay string arrangements. Love the show and I look forward to this episode especially every year. Keep on rockin on. -James

David Gilman

Hey MinnMaxers, Out of a soundtrack full of tremendous bangers, Panic in the Sky from TMNT probably put the biggest smile on my face this year. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=EmJdPSo0hfQ Hearing the guitar start shredding as you’re flying through the NYC skyline on hoverboards is peak Ninja Turtles. Thanks for doing these music episodes; always look forward to them! - David

Hello there! We Spore Supporter here :P Have you tried any cloud option recently? Maybe the GamePass cloud? I know it requires a good internet connection , but I myself check so many games you talk about on the Cloud version (anything that is not fast paced and plays well with a controller). Marvel's Midnight Suns would be one of those I'll chek as soon as they get on GP , and if they release a cloud version , I'll play that one cause it's a turn-based game. Return To Monkey Island or Pentiment are other recent great examples IMO.

Hallå Minnmaxers. According to Gamesindustry.biz, developers at From Software earn about $1,595 a month. The monthly cost of renting an single bedroom apartment in Tokyo is around $1,477 per month and cost of living around is $1,008. As an employe, HOW do you survive without going broke and using all your savings? Do you just take the hit and move on after a while and see it as a investment (like an education)? I just don't get how it's sustainable for the company or the employees. Thoughts?

Ian Savino

Don’t forget the chillest of vibes coming from our sweet boi Tunic earlier this year! Memories of Memories is the over-world theme and I adore it: https://youtu.be/89NybJGJLXQ

In honor of Spotify Wrapped, what are the most shameful/embarrassing games you've sunk the most hours into this year?

sayteehee

I just finished Norco last night, and I think its soundtrack is worth mentioning. Not necessarily something I’d listen to on it’s own, but it is so effective at supporting the atmosphere and creating a full, intentional experience.

CrabPalace

What are your favourite podcast theme music? Comedy Bang Bang and You Made It Weird both have fantastic themes that I never want to skip. I wish Reggie Watts would quit the James Corden show and dedicate his life to making themes for every podcast.

Phil DeGrave

The Callisto Protocol comes out Friday. It checks all the boxes for me. If it is not my favorite game of 2022, something has gone horribly wrong. Review embargo doesn’t lift until the morning of release. Is that a red flag?

Linn

I’m getting married in May of next year. I’m delighted that my fiancé has agreed that our walking down the aisle song being “Gusty Garden” from Super Mario Galaxy. What more songs should I try to incorporate in the wedding? 😊

Ray Sweat

Hey guys, I just want you to know beforehand that I wrote this down in my phone's notepad so I could remember to submit it for the episode. Last week, Ben talked about his fantasy if destroying art in museums and Sarah said he just wanted to break stuff. Ben followed up with a fantastic Limp Bizkit joke/reference by saying, "it's just one of those days" and NO ONE even chuckled or gave him credit for it. This isn't a missed joke opportunity, this is a missed laugh oppurtunity.

Jercyan

wow I was not expecting Ben to mention the DGA podcast. Fun fact, I was there when Spielberg and Anderson recorded that bit about The Fablemans. I almost didn't go but people insisted "I'd enjoy it" and I'm glad to have been present

Ramses Garcia

In your opinion how many are still alive that saw Babe Ruth play baseball?
