There is no typo in the headline, we're collecting your questions and comments for the next TWO weeks of podcasts on this post. Ben Hanson will be out of town next week, so we're recording two episodes of The MinnMax Show this Wednesday and airing one next week. We'll divide the questions between the shows randomly, but we'll read them on a specific episode if they tie in that episode's theme.

On this week’s episode, Ben Hanson, Janet Garcia, Jacob Geller, and Kyle Hilliard will be talking about what we played over holiday break AND the community's Top 10 Games of 2022!

Please submit your favorite games of 2022 to the survey so we can get a more accurate result for the community's objective list! You have until Tuesday at 11pm Central to submit your picks. Here's a link the form - https://forms.gle/zXCSFsgptVWPMYZr9

Via Discord mod Neill Smith - "The focus for this ranking is games released in 2022. For the purpose of this poll: Early access titles, expansion passes, new DLC, new ports, remasters and remakes, etc are all eligible. You don't have to enter 10 games, just fill out as many as you can with your own current ranking."

On next week's episode, Ben Hanson, Sarah Podzorski, Jeff Marchiafava, and Jacob Geller are talking about their most anticipated games of 2023. So feel free to submit your choice!

Everybody at the Backstage Pass tier can watch us record the shows live on Wednesday, with an exclusive pre and post show. We're recording the first at 11:15am Central and the second at 2pm Central. The unedited archive will be available to view after the fact. You could do us a favor by subscribing to the audio version of the podcast on iTunes or your favorite podcast app, telling a friend, leaving a review, and subscribing to our YouTube channel!

Woooo I completed my first Better Quest Goal of reading Jurassic Park. I ended up reading The Lost World as well. It was such a cool experience. Ben and Sarah said it was different from the movie but I was completely surprised by how wild its last act was. Gennaro was a completely character from his movie counterpart. I can see myself rereading the books down the line. It got me thinking would you all like to see a Jurassic Park game based off of the novel? Like maybe Naughty Dog taking a crack at it?

What's the correct ratio of peanut butter and jelly for a PB&J sandwich? I tend to go 75% peanut butter and 25% jelly.

Hello Ben and company! On the last podcast that you took questions on, someone called Ben a “shoobie” for wearing shoes on the beach and claimed it was a Californian term. They might have adopted it, but as a South Jersey native it is my duty to set the record straight: “shoobie” is a word that comes from the shore. From Wikipedia: “The term ‘shoobie’ originated in the late 1800s, and it derives from daytrippers taking the train to the New Jersey beach, with their ticket price including a boxed lunch packed in a shoe box.“ I think they used the definition of “someone who wears shoes on the beach” on Nickelodeon’s Rocket Power, though. It basically just means “tourist.”

Hello Cohorts! One of the great things about art in its many different forms is how it can inspire us to do other things. In 2022, how did video games inspire you to do something you wouldn't have done otherwise? Thanks, Nick from Atlanta

Jason Wojnar

What music do you listen to during your holiday get-togethers? Is it exclusively christmas/other respective holiday music or do you switch it up?

James Elder

Dan Ryckert often jokes that he doesn't need to listen to podcasts or read gaming news because "Ben watches and listens to everything and I'll just ask him". Is this true? How do you manage to listen to so many podcasts and stay up to date? Thanks, Jim

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and Friennds, What’s a good game name? We often recognize “bad “ game names. What’s it take to be a good game name?

Jacob Thompson

Hello! I hope all the 'horts had happy holidays! My question is, how do you know if you are good at single player video games? For multiplayer, there are scoreboards and stats you can look at, but for single player it's difficult to directly compare your gameplay with others. Is it just how fast you beat a game? What difficulty you play on? Completion percentage or achievements? Overall game knowledge? Why do I care about this so much, please help! Thanks! Jacob

Hey MinnMax and happy new year! Can we talk about Super Kiwi 64? I think I saw somewhere Kyle might've played it. It's a little N64 inspired collect-a-thon, short and sweet and costs like 3 bucks! More generally, I was wondering if you'd be willing to talk about dirt cheap games : I always saw them as bad games that sort of "pollute" stores from the "real games", but this was a real game changer for me! I went and played the devs other games which all cost around 2 dollars and absolutely loved them! It was my winter break revelation and I'm so happy I was able to change that personal biais... Do you guys have any experience if any with games like these?

Is chess the greatest game ever made? It can be played in person and online, it has cosmetic upgrades (boards and pieces), it is easy to pick up but has an extremely high (if not infinite) skill ceiling, there are metas and strategies to delve into but so many possibilities and strategies that always make the game interesting, it can be played in just a few minutes but usually a game lasts for a 30 minute playtime, it has a very rich and deep history stretching back hundreds of years but also has a bustling and vibrant online community currently, playing the game is proven to be good for you brain... you can listen to podcasts while play or just enjoy the sounds of the pieces moving. Is it the best?

Dylan Kelly

Dear MinnMax folks, What voice line from video games is forever stuck in your head? I personally hear lines from the 2001 RTS Stronghold: Crusader almost everyday in my head

Dan Villone

Hi Cohorts, What is the best game genre for a handheld console? What is the worst? Happy holidays! Dan

RickyWinterborn

do think society will ever regress back from looking at our phones a lot or have we crossed a point of no return?

Luis Garcia

Happy new year Minnmax! I know you barely have time to keep up with each year´s new releases, but what was your favorite game that you beat in 2022 but released before 2022? It could be either because you replayed a favorite of yours or finally marked something off of your backlog.

Kellogs

What's an ending for a game/movie that has stuck with you for one reason or another? I always come back to the ending of the 1980 film The Long Good Friday

MJ

What do you feel should be the role of politics in video games? Should games be purely entertainment, or have something to say about the society we live in? Why do you think there is seemingly more backlash to politics in video games rather than in other comparable media/art forms? Happy new year and keep up the amazing work!

Ken H (Kenny2Slice)

Do you have a favorite colloquialism or phrase from a game? I've been playing Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (shout outs to Kelsey) and the characters have a running gag where they show shock by using a description of the Queen's appearance. Things like "By the Queen's Wings!" My favorite so far has easily been "Queen's beans" mainly because I have no idea what it means. Has any phrase from a game stuck with you for any reason, comedic or otherwise?

What are your most anticipated games of the year

Luca Alberti

Hey everyone! The new year of dreams is upon us: Silksong coming soon is apparently "enough said" despite it being labeled as such back in 2019 and the direct sequel to BotW will finally release 6 years afterward. Do you think development teams will find a cap in size/scope that allows them to go back to shorter development cycles? Given the current developer shortage and growth in ambition, it seems unfeasible for the industry to be sustainable. Personally, I think FFXVI not going OW was a great call to deliver the game in a timely manner, but I fear that might have been approved just because XV already played that card.

GreenMountainState

My most anticipated game of 2023 is Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and will be what finally gets me to buy a PS5. My biggest hope for the game outside of the narrative is for meaningful side quests and things to do in the city. What do you all think that might look like? I'd love unique smaller stories but feel like Spider-Man and that world is a bit restricted in what you can do for side content. Thanks!

WeGoGiant

Hello MinnMax, What's the most random fact you ever learned because of a video game? Just the other day I played the adorable game Pupperazzi. When I took a picture of a pup wearing a straw hat, the entry said something like "Let's just hope his straw hat doesn't start a riot. Look it up." So I did. This led to the Wikipedia entry for the Straw Hat Riot of 1922, a real set of incidents where a fashion tradition of grabbing straw hats off of men if they wore them after Sept 15th, led to roving groups of New York teens beating people for wearing straw hats too late in the year. Has anything in a game ever led you down a knowledge filled tangent like this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_Hat_Riot

Happy New years MinnMax! I have a few resolutions, but am realistic. I predict out of my 5, I'll have abandoned at least 4 of them in a few weeks. Whats the one you won't fold on? btw, Kotor 2 is the most under rated Star Wars game. Thanks, Logan

James Gameboy

Most of my anticipation is for all the games I've been seeing from the Playdate community! It's gonna be a big year for 1 bit Zelda- and Metroid-likes on there. I'm glad you guys play and talk about all the long AAA games for me so I can still have some relevant gaming knowledge and just stick to my Playdate and retro stuff haha so thanks for that!

thejjuan1

Hello Ben and the crew Well, you finally got me, after listening to you guys for years I finally become a patron to get you guys that holiday party you deserve! It's my first time writing in so go easy. My question is LETS GET PISSY! So right now everyone is going to talk about all the games they are anticipating for. But what are the games that the crew thinks will be disappointing or bad? What will be 2023's Callisto Protocol, Gotham Knights, or even as bad as Babylon's Fall? I hope you guys had a good holiday and a happy New Year. Thejjuan1

PhillyYeetSteak

Hey crew! Were there any game mechanics or trends that you want more games to include? Kinda like how the nemesis system was the hot new idea of 2014.

Cath

Question for Sarah; you made me embrace more of the kawaii aesthetic. Any tips for me accessories, clothing or game wise? 🐰❤️

Victor Pham

Do you prefer cooking or baking?

podbod

What do you think makes a good pet name? I've always preferred giving a human name to a pet, like Dylan or Maggie

SlyCut

Hello all, I like puzzles and I'm generally very good at them. There's one type of puzzle, however, that stumps me every time. The sliding tile puzzle. (Usually lots of tiles that are scrambled with one tile missing so you can slide the tiles around to rearrange them into the correct picture.) I've never figured out the trick to consistently complete this type of puzzle and my heart sinks if it ever shows up in a game because I'll usually need to look up a solution. My question is, are there any puzzle types that you consistently struggle with?

Tonytheswordsman

What’s your dream morning cartoon lineup? I’d say 5 show slots would be right

Duderado

Hey MinnMaxers, Have you ever been to a LAN party? If so, what was the environment like and what games did you play? If not, what games would you want to play at a LAN party?

Tonytheswordsman

WAZZUP What is the oldest console or game you own? Does it still work? When was the last time you played it? Are you going to keep it for the rest of your life?

Michael Berry

Have you seen 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?'? If you have, can you answer me why the police did absolutely nothing when Judge Doom killed that cartoon shoe in the Acme warehouse? A judge kills an innocent, sentient, cartoon shoe, in front of a bunch of cops, and there were no consequences. I understand that this is a little nitpicky but that scene was very jarring and traumatizing to see as a kid.

Karl Ruben Weseth

Did any of you play a game (or games) you'd missed from the 2021 Two Tens in 2022? And would that game(s) have made your own 2021 list, retroactively?

MrButtons

What is the appropriate amount of time you can stay at your table in a restaurant after finishing your meal?

Howdy gang. BetterQuest goal update! So at the beginning of 2022, me and my lovely amazing girlfriend shared the goal of trying a new style of food every month to expand our horizons. Well 12 months later and the goal is complete! Between Ukrainian borscht, Korean grilled beef intestine, French frog legs, Lebanese chicken liver, Bangladeshi fried pomfret fish, and so so much more- it was truly amazing. I’ll share the photos and individual restaurants in the BetterQuest channel in the discord. Which leads me to the BetterQuest goal for 2023. To make sure the creative itch is scratched, me and her are making art for each other, one every month. Drawing, painting, sculpting, charcoal, anything - just to keep that artistic muscle flexed. And one more plug for the discord, I’ll post mine in the community visual arts channel, along with other amazing community members art. Thanks! Happy BetterQuest and a Merry Shagohod to all!

Bob Buel

So I got every achievement and 100%ed Vampire Survivors on PC, including the DLC. Then it came out on mobile. So I downloaded it on my iPad and played it before I went to bed. And now I 100%ed that version too. Now I’m looking at the Xbox Game Pass version and considering doing it again. Which leads to my question - what game have you 100%ed the most times?

Joe Dean

Since we're talking about what games we enjoyed from last year what were some of your favorite other pieces of media? Movies, books, tv shows, albums?

CrabPalace

My girlfriend has barely seen a videogame since the two she got into as a kid, The Sims and Klonoa(?!). I had been raving about GOW: Ragnarok so she asked if she could watch me play. I was waiting for her to be blown away by one of the best looking games of all time; instead she described the graphics as "uncanny valley" and said "eww, they haven't really figured out how to do eyes yet have they?" So I ask this. Do games still look like crap? Will non-gamers fail to be impressed as long as movies always look better?

Jon Larson

Hello and Happy New Year Minnimum Maximers, I’ve been steadily adding more features to my Steam Deck and most recently I was able to change the menu sounds on the Deck so it matches the sounds of the game of my choosing. My question to you is: what video game has your favorite menu navigation noises? My pick would be the Kingdom Hearts series, that high-pitched chirping noise just does it for me.

D M

I don't think I played a single game that was released in 2022! My most played game this year was a translated version of "Pokemon GB2: Here comes Team GR" which was released in 2001. Ars Technica in 2014 released a study that said 37% of steam games are never even played. My question is, what game has been on your "to play list" for the longest amount of time?

May McKernan

Hey Cohorts! After watching and loving Avatar: TWOW, I organized a trip with two friends to watch it at a premium theater. We were hyped! My excitement quickly turned to embarrassment however as they proceeded to laugh through the entire film. All the scenes that transported me were met with snark and eye-rolls. Usually I can separate this kind of thing but this had me questioning my taste in films/taste in friends/everything in a bizarrely emotional way. I cooled down a bunch afterward— but my question is “Has any piece of media garnered a deeply personal, near irrational defensiveness from you upon showing it to others?” I still think the movie rules. - Nick from Baltimore

Cheers and salutations good folks of MinnMax as we celebrate both the dawn of a new year and end to another year passed. Speaking of endings (segue!) - Has an ending to a video game ever changed your opinion of the overall experience, from good to bad or vice versa bad to good? The Witness is one example of a game that I adored the puzzles and world building all but up to its obtuse conclusion to which I can't help but have a love-hate sour taste with that game now. On the other side of the coin, I was enjoying Tunic as a decent Zelda-like, but how that game incorporates the use of the in-game manual into its puzzling final act elevates it to one of my fondest gaming experiences of 2022. The end. (Flips tape to Side B) Looking ahead to the exciting future that is 2023, my most anticipated game of the new year is, yes, the same answer as it has been for many a year now (but now with an official name) - The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. With what started as Nintendo having too many ideas for Breath of the Wild DLC so let's use the same engine to make a quick sequel, has since turned into what is now a 6 year development cycle and the longest gap between a new mainline Zelda game ever being released. I can't help but think Nintendo is aiming to strike lightning twice and we are underestimating the ambition of this next Zelda as simply a sequel. So my simple question for you all - On a scale of Tingle to Take My Rupees, what is your hype for Tears of the Kingdom? And if you wish it were higher, how much more would you like to see or know before you peak that summit of hype? Cheers all and best wishes to everyone to the new year! :)

Tonytheswordsman

Is there any cartoon character that if you had to spent a month with, you’d just end up murdering them? Rewatching some old cartoons and wow, I wouldn’t last with many. Idk how the cast did

Virgil B

What are some funny games you have played? I’ve been playing Psychonauts 2 and have been tickled pink by its writing and humor.

Josh Loebs

Greetings! I recently started replaying the Half-Life remake, Black Mesa, and couldn't stop thinking about how cool it would be to work there. Pre-apocalypse of course. If you could work at a business from any game, what would it be?

Robert Key

Better Quest Goal: A few weeks ago, I completed my goal to run a Christmas-themed 5K race the entire time. My last race before this was a half marathon eight years ago. Next I want to do a 10K, and after that make my way back up to a half marathon before the year is over. It'll be more challenging considering I'll be 31 years old this year and my hypothyroidism wasn't as prevelant eight years ago, but after doing the 5K I know I can do this! P.S. Hit me up on Twitter @RobbieKeyV with any motivational music I can get on Apple Music!

What has been the best year of your life and why?

Outlandish Beats

Do y'all game under the influence? Not trying to get anyone to narc on themselves just curious. Me personally, I like a little sticky icky at the end of the day while shootin dudes in Halo. Also, take an edible and go see Avatar 2 and tell me that's not CINEMA.
