Do live service games get a bad rap? If someone is only interested in playing a few games but wants to continuously play those specific games with new updates, is that so bad?

TheUnchartedWolf

What's up MinnMax! Over her time on Kinda Funny and MinnMax content, I've learned to really respect Janet Garcia's insights into the gaming industry. Despite that, I also noticed we have completely different tastes in gaming. Multiple times she has "had beef" with my favorite games of all time (I still love Jak 2). Is there someone you have a lot of respect for in the industry despite not sharing the same taste in games?

Ken H (Kenny2Slice)

Was watching Sarah's well presented Top 10 reasons to play FFXIV and noticed she also, correctly, didn't like the character Lyse. Emboldened by Sarah's brave stance, what are some of your least favorite characters from your favorite games?

My (fake) prediction for 2023: Player First Games teams up with Sony Pictures Animation to make... SpiderVersus! Fight as all of your favorite Spider people/pigs/villains. Featuring stages inspired by the home worlds of each Spidey. Launches June 2nd 2023 alongside Across the Spider-Verse.

Hi y’all. I’m currently in the process of redefining my career goals. I would love to pívot into the tech field but it’s a bit daunting but I shall try my best! With that in mind; if you suddenly lost interest in your current job(s), is there a field you would like to pivot into? This has me wondering about current influencers/creators and if they have the skills to pivot their careers if for whatever reason Twitch or YouTube went down in flames. Anyway, sorry for the long question! I hope you all have a good day, great week and amazing rest of your lives! -Albert

Hello Minnmax! I was thinking about this upcoming year and thinking back to an article I read discussing how Microsoft having a budget console will hold them back in the now current generation since they will have to make sure their games run on both consoles. Now that we are firmly in this generation do you think that Sony's games will feel more 'next gen' since they will be able to take full advantage of the PS5 and do you think they will have more third party exclusives as developers try to take advantage of the next generation tech?

Andrew J

Hello lovely people! Before Christmas I was on a rampage to get through as many games from 2022 as I could so that I could get as much from the looming GOTY discussions. As an avid music-festival-goer from the UK, a sense of familiarity crept in as I worked my way through Somerville and all of a sudden I found myself in the campsite of Glastonbury Festival, complete with it’s distinctive Pyramid stage. It amazed me to see a place I hold very dear to my heart in a video game! It also transported me back to the latest Glastonbury festival where Paul McCartney performed. He’s about halfway through a great rendition of Got To Get You Into My Life when I take notice of the visuals on the screen behind him and he’s using footage of The Beatles: Rock Band! This kinda blindsided me in a different way but similarly an incredibly cool moment. Have you guys ever experienced this kinda thing? A moment where two of your greatest passions crossover unexpectedly? Cheers!

Jacob Thompson

Hello Cohorts! What are your morning routines? Ever since I can remember I've had a hard time getting up in the morning so I am looking for inspiration! My current routine I'm trying in the new year is get up, make some coffee, then watch an episode of anime before starting the day.

ChrisKRool

Howdy Ben and crew! Considering the recent leak of Suicide Squad from Rocksteady revealing a host of "Games as a Service" elements (battlepass, multiple currencies, mission-based structure) I'm now bracing for impact for what may be another AAA game designed around milking every penny from the consumer - but want to give it the benefit of the doubt. What does the panel think of the current trajectory of Suicide Squad? source: https://www.ign.com/articles/leaked-suicide-squad-screen-appears-to-reveal-live-service-game-with-a-battle-pass

If you could have any animal as a pet, that would be sized proportionally to a dog, and that would be domesticated and wouldn’t murder you or anything, which animal would you choose?

Dan from Canada

Hey everyone. A little over a year after ps4 launched, they added Game suspend which I can’t imagine gaming without. Quick resume on Xbox can suspend 3 games. PS5 still stuck at 1. Where is multi game suspend? We got a peak with astro playroom the notifications for your friends beating your time. This seems built for hopping between games. Are we ever getting multi game suspend? Janet please use your PlayStation connections!

Michael Berry

Do your think smells will ever be incorporated into gaming in a meaningful way? I read that someone developed and olfactometer that allows one to sense smells in a VR environment and that there was a wine tasting game where you got points from guessing the right aroma. It sounds gimmicky but I really dig the novelty of it.

Chris Cwik

Hey Minnmax crew, Has a game ever made you change your opinion about a genre you thought you didn't like? I actively disliked tactical RPGs until I played Into the Breach. Something about that game made me understand the magic of the genre, and I can't wait to give Fire Emblem Engage a whirl later this week. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Garrett Wainstock

Why does Kratos have to open both of the heavy doors? It would be easier to only open one of them. (I know, loading, lighting, landmarking, blah blah blah. What's the in-universe explanation? Is he just a dummy?)

SlyCut

Hello all, Capcom has been all about remakes for a while. Am I the only one clamoring for a Dino Crisis remake/reboot? I really thought that Exoprimal trailer a while back was going to be it when it started. What a psyche out! Which game/franchise do you think is the most obvious in needing a remake/reboot? Other than Dino Crisis, the old MSX Metal Gear games come to mind.

James Elder

Excluding improved visuals/graphics, what other tech improvements (hair, AI/Simulated NPC voices, crowd sizes, dynamic animations, etc) would you like to see in games in 2023?

AnAttackCorgi

Oh hey there neighbors, thanks for letting me into the podcast. What song's got you groovin'? Let's say you're doing chores and it comes on over your speakers/gramophone and gets you bobbing your head. Mine is "Flowers" by Miley Cyrus. Podcast-related, what are some of your gaming anti-Resolutions, aka, things you promise you WON'T do in 2023? Cheers crew and keep groovin' - AnAttackCorgi

Royal Mudkip

Aloha Minnmax crew, Ben's trip to Hawaii reminded me a sweet joke! What's Mario Mario's favorite getaway island? No, not Yoshis' Island it's actually "Oh- WaHoo!!!" ..... Hehehe. >_< Love, Royalmudkip

What piece of music evokes an emotional response from you? Listening to Hospice by the Antlers, I always end up crying and just kind of being in a type of sadness that is oddly nice.

Muffyn Crumbs

Hey Ben and crew! Recently I've started to go and see movies without watching the trailer and have noticed that my enjoyment of them has gone up from not being spoiled on anything. Do yall do this too? Cheers!

Nick Tarry

I have a question for Kyle, being the resident One Piece super fan, but anyone can feel free to answer. One Piece Odyssey looks like a great game and I've seen a lot of praise online echoing this feeling. I've never watched a single episode of One Piece prior to the game coming out and I read online that you should at least watch up to episode 784 before jumping in. If I watch an average of 14 episodes per week, I could reach this goal by September. So here's my question: Am I crazy or is it worth it to start such a monumental task just so I can play this game?

Jonathan Fenn

Dear Minnmax, Why do gamers say 'addicting' rather than 'addictive'? Thanks for your insight, Jonathan

WeGoGiant

Hi MinnMax crew, Awesome Games Done Quick 2023 raised 2.6 million dollars for the Prevent Cancer Foundation (WOOHOO)! A staple of the GDQ marathons is the "awful block" where several truly terrible and/or wacky games get grouped together. Do any of you have a story of a great time you had while playing an awful game?

John Lee

Salutations, No real question here. Holidays can be exciting and stressful, so I'm just here to ask, how are you all doing? Cheers, John

Troy Ellison

Where's Kyle's top 10 games of 2022? Did I miss it?

Jordan Brown

Hello, So there are rumors that Baten Kaitos is getting a remake/remaster for Switch and I am doing my best to not get hyped to the moon and back about this. Every time I talk myself into the rumors being impossible to be true I start to think about how well Xenoblade took off for Nintendo and they don't really have a wealth of JRPG franchises anymore and it starts making more sense to me. Am I crazy for believing these rumors or does this hold any water for you guys? Rumors in question: https://exputer.com/news/baten-kaitos-eternal-wings-remake/

Hey minnmax, if you had unlimited access to cryogenic freezing and it was proven to be completely safe, how often would you use it if at all?

RabidLime

Horts and Co. what game are you waiting for that's never going to come out? PT? a Freedom Fighters sequel? another Jet Force Gemini? Dinosaur Planet before Nintendo went full Nintendo and forced StarFox in there? let's open up and console each other to celebrate a happiness that will never materialize.

Patrick Hughes

Hello good MinnMax folks. The massive success of the Nintendo Switch being a console / handheld hybrid cannot be denied and many are to assume there's no turning back on this model going forward (as would the many Switch Pro steadfasts would have you believe). However, I had a recent thought - for much of Nintendo's history, they maintained two different console pillars (console and handheld) during simultaneous timeframes. Think about it. With 150 million DS systems and 100 million Wii systems sold amidst overlapping years, it seems like having a split between consoles and handhelds can actually lead to more cumulative sales in total than having just one pillar as the Switch is currently positioned. With that context in mind, I can foresee a future where Nintendo may want to pivot the Switch to be viewed as a handheld pillar again and reestablish a new console pillar. Even if such isn't as successful as the Nintendo Switch, all those sales of a new Nintendo home console would be additive to what the Switch continues to sell. Do you predict Nintendo's next system moving away from this hybrid mentality? Or are you team Switch Pro for life?

Jason

To what extent do you maintain separation between work and pleasure? Gaming is not my work, yet I have a Switch dock under every TV in my house. I can truly enjoy Nintendo anywhere. How do you avoid or embrace this kind of connectivity given _play_ for you *is* largely _work_?

Andrew

Howdy, ya'll. Inspired by Janet's tragic journey through Jak II, I have to wonder if there are any other games (or other forms of media) that you have a lot of love for, but are worried that going back will kill your nostalgia?

Brian W

I’ve been a digital console gamer for years now. My ps5 can’t even take physical media! How many physical copies of games will you buy/receive in 2023?

Nick from Atlanta

Hello Cohorts! 2023 isn't even a month old, but it's time to reset the dumbest clock in video games. That's right, there has been yet another leak of military documents on the War Thunder forums in an attempt to win an argument. This time, it's about the F-16 and the AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile. I guess my question is: Is this the dumbest thing in video games? There are plenty of things that are horrible about gamers or unethical about the industry in general, but this one is just... dumb. Also, will we make it through the rest of 2023 without another one? Thanks, Nick from Atlanta

If you had to dedicate yourself to becoming great at speedrunning a game, what would it be?

Damon

Goose Goose Duck is the latest game rising up the Steam charts. Since I’m assuming none of you have played it, let’s settle the age old question instead: Duck Duck Goose or Duck Duck Gray Duck?

PhillyYeetSteak

My local Best Buy has stopped selling physical movies in store entirely, and as someone who enjoys having a shelf full of media, it breaks my heart. Any of you still buy physical games, movies, music, books, etc?

KiwiTheGoo

Hey MinnMaximaniacs, someone asked a great question recently about when major developers will make smaller games, instead of these massive over worlds. My question builds on that: what is From Software doing that allows them to create games like Elden Ring? It's almost as big as RDR and GTA, and with far more intricate level design and rpg mechanics. Is it simply heavy crunch and reused assets? Something else? What can other devs learn from their content generation?

Joe Garifo

Hello Ben and Crew, I’ve got a simple question. Last Of Us show or game first?

Seth Parmer

Hello MinnMax Crew! I recently started getting REAL into the Final Fantasy series, and as my only experience with it has really only been Final Fantasy XIV, VII Remake, and a bit of XV, I decided to play through all of the OG Final Fantasy VII last month and fell in love with it. I loved it so much that I grabbed the Pixel Remasters on sale (I-VI) and all the others I missed over the years and plan on playing through all of them before XVI releases later this year. My question for you all is, have you ever played a game in a series that made you dive into the previous installments? If so, what was your experience? Did the games hold up? I just finished Final Fantasy I and absolutely adored it. While I think the adjustments made to the Pixel Remaster helped with that, it was fun exploring that world for the first time. And I am beyond excited to dive into the others—especially VI and X. Thanks!

Ian Switaj

What, in your opinion, are the keys to having a good adaptation of a video game property? Faithfully retelling the story of the game? Telling an original story while staying true to the spirit of the source material? What do shows like "The Last of Us", "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" and the "Nier Automata" anime have that make them a success and sets them apart from other shows/movies like "Halo", the new "Resident Evil" movie, "Uncharted" and "Ratchet & Clank"? What would you focus on when adapting your favorite property?

mraran

MinnMax crew, thanks for attending your mandatory quarterly performance review. How do you feel you can improve as a member of this MinnMax team or this podcast or this *insert show that you are on* in the next quarter? Thanks, make sure your time sheets are in before noon, and your bonus will actually be a discount coupon for a fish sandwich.

Embrace

Hey guys. This is my first job int the game industry so it was really surreal seeing your impressions on what Silent Hill: Ascension is since I'm a programmer on it. I was wondering if any of you have any memorable, funny and/or weird experiences with non-management, non-director, non-PR people for games you have covered?

cranberry

Thank you, Kyle Hilliard. I'm watching One Piece based on the recommendations you've given and I've fallen in love with the characters, the artstyle and the heart of the show. I've seen 45 episodes, the Red film and I'm playing One Piece Odyssey. Oh! I also got this cool Nami t-shirt and I wore it to the family's house on Christmas. My dad liked it, too!

jkk411

It’s time to play a game: Coker Pepsi! I will list a series of names and you will have to guess if they are either A) A Track from a Gareth Coker OST or B) A Variation of Pepsi. 1. Carinval (Pepsi, Japan Flavor) 2. Code Red (Coker, ARK Genesis) 3. Ice (Pepsi, Southeast Asia) 4. Fire (Pepsi, Southeast Asia) 5. Fire and Ice (Coker, Ark) 6. Creation (Coker, Ark) 7. Ghost (Pepsi, Japan Flavor) 8. Cheer (Pepsi, Thailand flavor) 9. Deep Freeze (Coker, The Mean Greens) 10. Max Chill (Pepsi, Sweden/Finland) So, how did you do? Did you prove yourselves to be true "Coker Spaniels" or did you fail this Pepsi Challenge?

HeyYouPikablu

Hi all! First time questioner, long time listener. I'll be spending the next few days driving cross country with my partner. From MN to CA, we have about 4 days/nights in our trip. My question is, do you have any gaming related memories during road trips ya'll have gone through in your time on this planet? I have one during a school trip for band/choir to New Orleans. My friend and seat mate Mitch finally had the opportunity to play Megaman Battle Network 3 versus mode, in which I found out I was terrible at the game. Keep on doing what you do, with love, Pikablu(MN)

BearCommando

Hey cohorts, Another year, another round of “Switch 2” rumors. Do you think Nintendo will release another animal crossing for the next console, or will they give it a 1 console cycle rest? I feel like on one hand a new one can’t possibly live up to the cultural impact the current one had, and everyone has now gotten their fill and dropped it, but on the other hand they probably put the team immediately to work on a sequel when they saw the sales exploding so much. What’s your prediction and what “theme” do you want the next one to be?

Jeremy McPhail

Hey Ben and the Maxxers. With the news about long term development times, I assume we'll continue to see remakes as they don't have to be started from scratch. Which game or games would you like to be remade RE2 style? Personally I want a Syphon Filter remake. Great game, great story and the guys who developed it said they're up for it.

Vexhardt

Occasionally I’ll play a game that has one singular aspect that keeps me playing it despite not really enjoying the rest of it. This could be anything but for me it’s usually either the characters, narrative or music. What is a game that had this for you and what was the one thing that kept you playing. A recent example from me would be DioField Chronicle. For some reason the progression systems really hooked me and I played all the way till the end unlocking everything for every character. Unfortunately it was an entirely forgettable experience in every other aspect.

Luca Alberti

Hi MinnMax crew! As undisputed connoisseurs of videogames Ubisoft calls YOU to lift them from their pitiful state. You have to greenlit one game based on a Ubisoft IP that will set the new standard for the company...but you also have to sell another IP. What do you choose?
