Hello! Hello! Over the last few years, I find I spend more time collecting games and “trying them out” rather than seriously playing games. My Steam RePlay said I played 145 new games in 2022. But I know I finished less than 10%. I probably didn’t finish more than 6 games in 2022. So my motto for 2023 is “play more, buy less.” Last year, I would have purchased Forsaken to “try it out.” This year, it won’t make the cut, as I try to buy less and play more. That means spending more time with games I already own and being far more selective on purchases in 2023.

When was the last ‘great’ day you had, and what made it special?

Leafeonn (Josh K)

Sup MennschMaxers, Just got my first Gundam to build! Started a little bit last night and a light bulb went off inside my head. I was enjoying it more than LEGOs and realized I had potentially found a new dangerously expensive hobby. What are some recent moments where you realized "wow yeah I love this" and it became a new passion? Could be a hobby, show, franchise, etc. I'll take my answer on the air, thanks. Your pal, Leafeonn P.S.: I also got into RedLetterMedia the past couple months. You two outlets might be the Representative Midwestern Content Creators™️, but I realized MinnMax is almost the polar opposite from them, personality wise. Their motto could basically be "Movies, Enemies, and Getting Drunker". There were some Wisconsinisms i picked up too that Sarah has similar to them, so the Minnesota vs Wisconsin differences really are real!

TheLastArcher

Hey Hanson & Co. Inc.!! If you could have 3 wishes granted for the video game industry as a whole, what would they be? (Feel free to trim down to 1 or 2 wishes to save some time 😉)

Simple question this week: Why haven't you talked about Jackbox Party Pack 9?!?! The new games are really good and interesting. I know Ben is a huge Jackbox fan so I'm surprised this release hasn't been mentioned at all on the podcast. Anyway, I love the show and I hope you are all doing well. Hugs n kisses!!!

Hello all, I went take a sip of my drink a while back and noticed a tiny spider on the rim of my cup. If I hadn't seen it, I would've swallowed it and never noticed. Another time, my wife was eating broccoli and saw a little worm inching along in there. So small, she wouldn't have noticed eating it. My question is; if you could see the statistics of all the types and quantities of critters you've ingested in your life, would you want to see them? It's an absolute yes from me. I think that's so interesting. My wife said definitely not. So, I asked, what if these statistics included all future occurrences of critter ingestion that you could avoid. She's still not sure she would say yes. Is ignorance such bliss that you would risk ingesting more critters?

Joke oppotunity finally taken advantage of: this week you finally made the joke I've been wanting you to make ever since you changed Minnmax Council to Party Chat. And that was saying "keep them there like you just don't care" after asking people to put their hands in the air. Thank you, I've always anticipated it week after week.

Richie Carrasco

What is your least favorite word used to describe your nerdy collections? Mine is: stuff. It makes it seem as though my statues and books are just disposable meaningless objects. And I view what I collect as expressions of my personality and what I am passionate about.

Hello Ben and minnmax crew So I was listening to last week's party chat(not a plug but only 5$ a month to listen for ben) When the topic of theme parks came up; I noticed that Ben talked about places like Disney World/Land not being fun for him, too many people, hot, etc. (all valid points) But I remember being young that was the place I always wanted to go. But in the summer of 04, my parents surprised my brother and me on that trip to Disney World; it was a dream come true. Going to the Tower of Terror and Space Mountain made me scream so hard I almost passed out. I was 9 at the time. Finally, seeing the fireworks at magic kingdom was a significant memory that I hold close to. But the question to the crew is, are there any theme park memories to hold dear? If not, what theme parks do you want to go to in the future? P.S. Also, patreon goal to get the crew to Super Nintendo World when?

AAA games are getting longer. Here are some HowLongToBeat Main Story times for you to consider: God of War (2018) - 20.5 hours; God of War Ragnarok (2022) - 25.5 hours. Assassin's Creed Origins (2017) - 30 hours; Assassin's Creed Odyssey (2018) - 44.5 hours; Assassin's Creed Valhalla (2020) 60.5 hours. The Last of Us (2013) - 14.5 hours; The Last of Us - Part II (2020) - 24 hours This is just a comparison of IPs that we can compare to prior versions. New IPs have a similar trend with more recent games (Ghosts of Tsushima, Cyberpunk, etc) clocking in way longer than older ones. Why do you think major titles have gotten so much longer in the last 5-10 years and is this a good thing or would smaller games have more quality/fidelity and maybe be less intimidating for people to finish?

Watching Ben and JeffM go sledding made me wonder, what was something you did recently that filled you with childlike glee?

Victor Pham

Why are quips and levity solely blamed on Marvel movies? Haven't these things been a part of blockbusters and video games for decades now? Are we pretending 80s action movies weren't silly now?

nikkinom

hey gang in the past, i've always felt guilty for not finishing a game. i felt like i was wasting money on something that i didn't fully experience, or disrespecting the developers who worked so hard to make the game, only for me to quit halfway through. i've come up with a solution now, whenever i don't feel like completing a game and don't want to feel bad for quitting, i just thank the game and the developers for keeping my interest, and then delete the game. as an example, i've been playing ratchet and clank rift apart, i'm about ten hours in, and i think i'm ready to stop. thank you ratchet and clank, thank you insomniac for giving me ten hours of joy. i'm deleting you now. goodbye.

Jacob Thompson

In honor of Ben and JeffM going sledding, what is the most fun winter activity? Snowboarding? Ice skating? Nordic skiing? I will put in one vote for Broomball!

Miles Ribbans

All the recent SSX talk made me want to revisit SSX Tricky and I’m sure it would be an absolute blast. Conversely, I played a game called Ninja: Shadow of Darkness on PS1 as a kid and it remains one of fondest gaming memories…in my head. If I played it today, it likely wouldn’t hold a flame to the memory of playing it at that time in my life. What’s a game that you remember fondly that you know wouldn’t hold up if you played it today?

Mason

Hey All, I've noticed these last few yeas good B Tier games just get eaten alive on social media. Do you think it's developers marketing or us as the consumer that are to blame for this? I mean we can't realistically expect every game that releases to be a groundbreaking experience. P.S. yes forspoken has got a little jank but I'm still having a good time.

The Sleepy MailMan

Hi, MinnMax! Is there a game where it’d be your only piece of entertainment for the rest of your life, and you’d be happy with it? I always said that I’d love to play GTA IV every day, learn the street names, jump over boxes, and soak in the New York culture, and it’d never get boring! You?

H Densmore

Hello all! Over the last year I've been making a point to go back and play games I missed on older consoles that I never owned, and I've been blown away by a lot of games that I hadn't ever heard of, like Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective or Aliens Infestation for DS. What are some older games that are dear to your heart that may not be obvious picks for revisiting?

Azza G

Hi MinnMax! Greetings from Australia! I was wondering how much stock you folks place in developers now days. In terms of 'this game will probably be good because of blank developer'. When I was very little and naïve I used to even think a publisher must mean a game is good, 'if Ubisofts name is on the box it must be good' but now days I even doubt some of my favourite developers when it comes to there upcoming games such as Redfall from Arkane. What are your thoughts? Thanks

Tim Mattonen

Heya, I decided to give Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time a few weeks ago. Really loving it. So much so, I started thinking maybe I’ll try to platinum it(I’m a platinum a game once every 2-3 years kind of person)..But the more I played it, the more I realized that a platinum would probably consist of getting every dang box on every level. Then I saw 0.2% actually platinum the game and the thought of doing so turned into a huge no. So my question, either: A) Ever have a similar experience? Or B) What’s the hardest game you platinum?

Cath

Sarah, please explain what happen to Ben and JeffM in viva piñata

Hunter Blessing

Do you find that getting into "pro gamer position" actually helps with difficult games? I'm of course referring to times where you have to lean towards the TV on the edge of your seat with 10% more focus than normal. (P.S. doesn't help much with trivia tower)

whitemex

A lot of podcasts i listen have the episode number in the title.. i was wondering if you, Ben, knew the current count including this one being recorded? I'm talking about Minnmax Show Podcast episodes released weekly...Also would probably be interesting to see which cohort can guess the closest.... For the record I don't know the episode and am really hoping you do

Patrick Hughes

Hello hello one and all good folks of MinnMax. If there's two types of levels that are the likeliest culprits of every gamer's existential dread, they are the inevitable water levels and ice worlds. Your mission if you choose to accept - Determine once and for all which of these two banes is the greatest evil. Thank you in advance for solving this age old question.

Tonytheswordsman

Wazzup I was watching some clips of some good ol Looney Toons and the question dawned on me: What is the best Looney Toon character and what is the worst?

John

Okay, So can we talk about stairs? Like, have you noticed that in games these days the feet actually work with them? Is this the definition of next generation? AI foot-placement?

Tonytheswordsman

What is a cartoon character that you enjoy but if they ever were real and hung out with you, you’d end up killing because of how annoying they’d be?

Gregory Xouris

Hey MinnMax! Is there an art style for a game that you think is either misunderstood or maybe not executed well enough? For me, that game is Twilight princess. It gets a lot of criticism for the washed out brown look, but i always felt that it was supposed to contrast with the bright colors at the right moment to make the visuals really pop particularly in the twilight realm. A big problem was the Wii was just not able to execute that vision entirely. The HD port on wii u probably needed to be more of a full on remake to bring that to life.

Nick from Atlanta

Hello Cohorts! Last week, I submitted a question about another classified military secrets leak on the War Thunder forums . I wanted you to predict whether we'd make it through 2023 without another incident without another leak. Well, it's good that you didn't read that question, because on the 18th while you were recording, it turned out there was another leak. So, what do you think is the biggest contributing factor that deludes people into continuing to do this to try and win an internet argument? What combination of gamers, military simulation, and the internet makes this keep happening? And will we get out of 2023 without another incident? Thanks, Nick from Atlanta

Andrew Craig

Despite having zero interest, I only played Cult of the Lamb because Sarah fought so hard for it in the two-tens and I loved it. Same can be said after Janet’s defense of Tunic. Hell, I only played Persona 5 because Ben said it couldn’t be beat and I loved it so much, the Save the Dates for my wedding were themed on Persona 5’s calling card. As reviewers, most of you have no doubt had to play games you weren’t interested in for the job. Were there any games you were actively disinterested in that you ended up loving?

Koru

Kia ora! Greetings from New Zealand. With all the discussion going around about the state of forsaken’s writing, do you have a favourite ‘badly’ written or delivered like that lives rent free in your head?

Derin

Hello Everyone Are there any characters you could never see being the lead star of a narrative driven game in the style of a God of War or The Last of Us? For me a character like Pac Man has no chance to actually leave me engrossed in their emotional drama or relationships, that wouldn't just have me laughing. There is no way I could perceive him as a serious character trying to deal with things relatable to me. I get he is a mascot character, but Kratos sort of changed his perceptions from the early GoW titles, so sometimes characters can mature. I guess maybe a better question is what is the most "out there" or unique character in gaming that you could actually take serious in a mature narrative focused game?

Crayter

Hey there, question for Ben: since democracy denied us our full sales pitch on Age of Mythology Tuesday, could we just get the elevator pitch now? Bonus points if you convince a cohort.

Dustin Guarino

Hey all, I really enjoyed watching you guys lock in the top 10 games of the year. It was quite entertaining! 2023 might be the most exciting year of releases ever for me, so I’m curious how many games from my 2023 buy list you think will make the 2 tens this year? Hogwarts 2/10 Star Wars Jedi: Survivor 3/17 Resident Evil 4 remake 3/24 Zelda 5/12 Diablo IV 6/6 Final Fantasy XVI 6/22 Starfield Final Fantasy 7R2 Sea of Stars Balders Gate 3 August Armored Core

Hey sledders and shredders, Seeing pocket card jockey on the agenda for this week's episode abruptly reminded me that the impending 3DS & Wii U eShop closure is just around the corner. Does the panel have any personal last minute must have titles to recommend? The industry rumor mill promised me twilight princess and windwaker Switch ports last year so I guess I'm stuck playing those on Wii U until Nintendo makes the move. The 3DS has those Ace Attorney entries that are digital only too. Also thanks for having Maddy Myers on Trivia Tower. Crossovers with cool communities like Triple Click's makes my Patreon support a no brainer every month. -stay frosty, James

TheUnchartedWolf

Hey MinniMaxx, I was thinking about how James Cameron said Avatar 5 would return to Earth, and it got me thinking: Why is it such a major deal in Sci-fi stories to go back to earth? Isn't the whole point of the genre to leave earth?

Francisco

Hi cohort, long time first time! i am a tattoo artist and I love thinking about the intersection of video games and tattoos. So I have a two part query. What do you think are some of the greatest examples of tattoos on video game characters, and what characters or symbols from video games do you think would make good real life tattoos?

AnAttackCorgi

S̄wạs̄dī pheụ̄̀xn rạk khxmphiwtexr̒ k̄hxng c̄hạn! (That's "Hello my computer-loving cohorts" in Thai according to Google Translate) Now that the plague is sunsetting, my girlfriend and I quit our jobs and will use our savings to travel starting March 2023. We hit up Thailand first and then trek through South-East Asia for 3 months. Then we'll lazily traverse around Australia for a year. Any gaming advice for me, like excellent titles to whittle away agonizing layovers, or useful accessories? Should I look into Xbox Cloud Gaming and the Apple Arcade as well? We'll have a couple iPhones and one Switch. (Non-gaming advice for our adventure is also appreciated). Not to worry Ben, this Corgi will take MinnMax with him.

Hello Minnmaxers How old is your oldest shirt? I’m still holding on to a metroid shirt that came with the metroid prime trilogy in 2009! I haven’t worn it in maybe 5 years but I can’t bring myself to throw it out. Am I nuts? Are you guys nuts also???

Andy Dwyer

Hi minnmaxers, Do you think some publishers undervalue their games? I think of how some publishers like Ubisoft have a track record of putting their games on steep sales a month or two after release. I know they put out a press release about Mario and Rabbids underperforming and it’s now been on sale for 25% off multiple times. Compared to Nintendo which rarely puts games on sale this desire to move units at any cost seems to be cheapening the games and making them a harder day one sell. Or do you think this strategy is inevitable as we have more options of what games to play and how to legally do so?

RiskyChrisP

Hi MinnMaxers! Tonight I was walking my dog while listening to the HBO Last of Us podcast, and they included Clicker audio in a really unexpected spot. I didn't immediately realize what was happening, so I just thought some demon was hiding in the bushes that I couldn't see. I can't remember the last time I was so genuinely scared about something like that. What was the last thing that really terrified you?

Fahad

Hello Computer Loving Cohorts! Been a long time listener/lurker since the beginning ever since the Game Informer days. I haven't interacted as much but always tried to set aside some time to listen to the weekly podcasts. It is time to change that! (the interacting part not the listening part). And I decided what better way than to ask a question? Well with Forspoken having come out this week and all of the viral clips of its dialogue making it's way around the internet, I wanted to ask you all if there is a line of dialogue SO bad in a video game franchise you love and if it impacted your opinion on that game. I just feel like with it being a new IP, people have been being pretty harsh on that game (even though I also find some of the dialogue a bit weird as well). Bonus points if you can quote it! Think it would be fun to hear from everyone. My example is "That was undefinable proof that we totally owned you lamers" - From Ben's favorite franchise, Kingdom Hearts. Excited to hear ya'lls quotes, take care!

Phelix Diaz

What are your most nostalgic, one-off games (first game in the series without sequel) that you pray to see one day, when you no longer can see past 2K resolution cause you're so old? Mine is Psi-Ops: the Mindgate Conspiracy on PS2. They pinky promised "To be continued!!!" Also best physics at that time.

Benjamin Jennings

Hey all, did you catch the Steamworld announcements and their new city building game? Do you think they are making the right move using Steamworld as a theme to explore new genres in each game? What would you want from the other 3 Steamworld games in development?

Fatt Mish

Good day CLCs and friends. What are your go to snacks at the movie theater? Do you do candy and popcorn? Pretzels? Soda? Or are you a bit wild and buy yourself pizza or a burger ever? I'm a big fan of DOTS, Swedish Fish and Sour Patch Kids. Also, do you recreate snacktime at home on big movie nights? Lovin' the show! -Mars

Hey minnmax, guilty pleasure is a term I don’t like because there really shouldn’t be any guilt in something you find pleasure in for the most part. That being said there isn’t another term that really describes what guilty pleasure describes. So what I’m getting at is, what’s a game, or song, or piece of media altogether that you love or play that doesn’t really fit in with what you enjoy but you enjoy anyways. I used to love heavier metal, but recently started listening to Taylor swift when she dropped folklore and absolutely fell in love with it. Now I primarily listen to music that I describe as “sad girl music.” Also, I am not a visual novel kinda guy but this rereleased persona 3 portable is pretty stinking cool. Anyways, thanks for all you do and I look forward to the podcast.

KC Caleb

Hey MinnMaxers, In the last few weeks I have heard a few games journalists talk about the use of walkthroughs in regards to not having time to beat games without them sometimes. As I have gotten older I have also noticed myself becoming perhaps less patient and quicker to go to a walkthrough when I find myself stuck on a puzzle. I feel like I just have less time for games and don't want to spend an exorbitant amount of time banging my heads against the same puzzle. Does anyone else have this same issue or should I be put in gamer jail? Thanks, Caleb

Grizzled Gaming

Hey gang! As a kid, what was your prized possession?

Tristan

Gday all, probably a question better suited to last week's episode, but what do you predict will be your top 10 games of 2023? Be interesting to see how much your predictions differ at the end of the year.

DontBashAsh

I just started playing Persona 5 for the fifth time and it got me wondering… What video game have you played over and over again, or—if you’re not a replayer—what video game have you spent the most time playing? I will never get enough of Persona 5 Royale or Fire Emblem 3 Houses 😅
