Hi all! First time poster, long time listener. With the popularity and acclaim the new last of us hbo show is getting, I’m wondering (other than TLoU tv show) what is your favorite video game adaption? Bonus questions if you want to keep the convo going: Do you have any that you love but you know aren’t “good”? And any you absolutely despise?

Tom Bowen

Rumours continue to fly about Metal Gear Solid remakes. With the emergence of VR and the heavy influence of VR in MGS2, what would a MGS2 made today be like? Kojima set up the end of MGS2 to be a commentary on the player, their want for a game exactly like MGS1 and the idea of control and the control of information. Would Kojima's vision have been better realised if he had access to today's current VR technology?

Wes Householder

Hey all! What's the best brunch food? I really like eggs benedict. A local restaurant around here does a monthly special benedict that is bomb. Poached eggs are probably the best eggs.

DrGonzo_MD

Hey Ben Hanson and the MinnMax seeds What’s your favorite weird piece of 3am media? I use to work nights and I would find myself in the weirdest avant-garde / experimental music hole between the hours of 3-5am, in order to keep myself awake and interested. My go to was the album by zos kia/ coil called transparent. Such a fascinating and terrifying album. One track called “on balance” reminded me of bowsers castle map music from super Mario world, but I may be crazy. Now, that my life lets me see the sun shine, I have to be in a very special mood or up late in order to listen to it. What’s a piece of media be it game, movie, show, album, or anything at all that is only fitting of being up at odd hours?

Hey all! With the sudden release of Hi-Fi Rush as a consumer how do you feel about games that release with little to no marketing? Bethesda has done this before with fallout 4 releasing a few months after the E3 while also releasing fallout shelter that very night. However this model only seems practical with larger studios that have a massive audience and detrimental for indie studios.

G-Max Thoeren

Loved the interview with John "JoJo" Johanas, which made me think of an inversion on a question that was asked recently - is it possible we're about to enter a golden age of games due to the pandemic? Jojo credits the polish of Hi Fi Rush partailly to the extra time and flexibility given to the team, and two of the best games last year also received extra time; Elden Ring seemingly due to Fromsoft's pedigree and God of War Ragnarok due to Christopher Judge's illness.

MarriottPlayer

Hi MernMerx crew! Is there an instance where you prefer the original version of a game to its remake? For me that’s Resident Evil 2. (NOTE: I think RE2 remake is fantastic.)

Chandler

Isn't it weird that if you have $20 and I ask "Do you have $5" you would say yes? But if I ask "how much money do you have?" And you said $5 that would be a lie? Thanks minnmax

During game of the year debates, there always seem to be a few games championed by a lone defender and met with a lot of resistance. If each of you had to guess now, what 2023 game do you think will fit this bill for you?

Kellogs

The most recent episode of The Last of Us has me thinking about what individual episodes of TV might be my favorite. Do you have a particular episode or episodes of a show that really stand out to you?

GreenMountainState

I recently got a group of friends to play Cash 'n Guns and for a non board game crowd it was a really big hit. I actually have this game because you all played it for a board game video. My question is, what's another group board game that would be a good follow up to this to capitaize on that momentum? I'd love to be able to play a group game with a few more interesting systems or story but don't want to scare people away!

KC Caleb

Watching through The Last of Us is making me want to replay through the game. Is this silly since the show is so faithful to the source material? Additionally has a video game adaptation ever made you want to replay or check out the game for the first time?

Jason Wojnar

Did I hear it right when Ben said in the Last of Us spoiler mode that he didn't know the song Bridge Over Troubled Water? So that we don't single him out, what's a super popular song you managed to avoid for decades. And Ben, listen to that song, it's literally one of the most beautiful pieces of art ever made. Heck, the whole album deserves your attention.

Victor Pham

Is Ben Hanson getting into a stylish action game with Hi-Fi Rush the biggest surprise of the year?

Dan from Canada

Is there an obvious sequel, spin-off, prequel to one of your favourite games/movies/books etc that you for some reason have not experienced ? Why not ?

Nora Parón

Since you asked in last week's podcast, yes I currently play Elder Scrolls Online, we exist! I think it does a really good job of balancing the combat of both MMOs and elder scrolls games (honestly I think it's better than both), and being able to explore that *entire* world is really cool to me as a lore nerd. But, I think your reaction of "20 million people *really* play this?" isn't that surprising, I think that's the case for most MMOs that aren't FFXIV since it's a genre that's tough for a lot of people to get into, especially if nobody else you know is playing it. So I guess the question is: What are games for you that wish more people would get into (multiplayer or otherwise), but for one reason or another people just won't give it a chance?

BearCommando

Hi Crew, You mentioned in game of the year debates that no one really talked about Aperture Desk Job, despite adding more lore to the Portal universe. Do you think this is a sign of a bigger problem? - namely, people stop caring about franchises when it’s 10+ years between entries. If valve tried to make Half Life 3 right now, an 18 year old gamer might not care because they literally weren’t born when Half Life 2 came out. Similarly, the average 18 year old that played Half Life 2 would now be 37 which is an age where many people have grown away from gaming. Are developers wasting their time making new entries in a franchise when the gap has been too long? Do you think a similar effect will happen with the next Elder Scrolls or Pikman as well?

CrabPalace

I'm 28 and finally starting to feel like a lot of new indie music is for people younger than me. Will this ever happen with games too?

Frankie Roughknight

Hello, cohorts! The recent episode of party chat had me thinking about how games media & the overall industry is considered niche by the masses still despite the massive amount of money spent & gained there. There are a few large award ceremonies, but to my knowledge, these don't air on popular public television. There are groundbreaking stories & experiences that can't be had anywhere else, but these aren't well known outside of the gaming community. What do you think the reason is that games haven't broken into the massive collective of popular culture coverage & exposure, & what do you think it will take? To add to that, The Last of Us HBO show seems to be doing great, & for the most part, it's faithful to the games, if not, expanding & expounding on the core material. Could that be the link from popular entertainment culture to video games that makes people reevaluate the collective thought on video games as a whole?

Gregory Xouris

Hey Minnmax! I just finished hifi rush and i do not have enough hyperbolic praise to give it so I will simply say that this is one of the best video games I have ever played. I think the biggest shock is the $30 price tag even though this game is absolutely the full package. It blows my mind. How?!?! This would have been a huge AAA game back in the PS2 era that this game took inspiration from. If hifi rush is not AAA, then the industry needs to rethink what that actually means. I know that it is often shorthand for how expensive a game is to make, but I often associated with a level of quality and attention to detail. I don't think that applies in modern times now though. It feels like it's simply how big and how long your game is. So what does a AAA experience mean to you?

henrik mortensen

Hallo. I just listened to last weeks episode and the comment from Drake Heinhorst I think it was intrigued me. I love colors! It is like one of the most important aspects of the world to me. And I think the prettiest thing about humans is their eyes. But I never know what eye color people have. Never! I kinda know mine, but no one elses. Except for David Bowie. And I guess Sauron. Hate your show!

Steven Lambson

With the big game coming up soon (Super Bowl ) millions of dollars will be spent on ads of varying quality. If you were the person in charge for marketing the hot new game Final Fantasy 16 during the Super Bowl, how would you do it? Celebrity cameo, actual gameplay trailer, awesome cinematic, a muppet version of the trailer? How would you spend the money to make a good impression on the casual audience?

Ben Shively

With the release of the Dead Space Remake, the consensus I’ve been seeing online is that it’s the best remake of all time. As much as I love it, I don’t know if I would go that far. What do you think the best remake/remaster of all time is? I don’t know how Resident Evil 1 Remake could ever be topped.

Donald's Cloaca

Do y'all use the button that centers the camera behind the character? I've been doing it ever since Ocarina of Time, and I'm surprised how many games don't include this feature, most recently with Hi-fi Rush. It's super useful when you want to quickly turn around and look in the opposite direction or even just a 90 degree turn. Am I just a relic from a by-gone era when "Z-Targeting" meant something? Do most people just slowly rotate the camera when they want to turn around?

Michael Kammeyer

After taking a 6+ month break, I finally went back to Elden Ring and was surprised how easy it was to re-fall in love with it all over again. I was worried that so much time between playing meant I wouldn't feel the same about it anymore, that I had missed my window to get the most of out of it, but that wasn't the case at all. What games have you had this experience with, and do you have your own ways of dealing with game burnout?

Luca Alberti

Hey MinnMax board, Rumbleverse is apparently shutting down in late February and the Director of Hi-Fi rush couldn't reassure us that the game will not be delisted eventually due to music licenses (check out the interview!), what advice would you give to devs to preserve their games without limiting their creative freedom?

TheUnchartedWolf

Hey everybody! With Sony reportedly slashing the production of the PSVR2, what does this mean for VR's future? Will it continue being a niche? Will Sony ultimately abandon it like the Vita (RIP)

Mike Lynch

Hey y'all! With HBO's The Last Of Us getting deserved praise as a video game adaption, do you think people will now be less surprised that great video game adaptions are possible? Games like TLOU (and even Detective Pikachu) are now so inherently cinematic that it seems like a more easily attainable goal, despite fumbles like the Halo show.

Charles Davis

Someone had the genius to make a rendition of Radiohead's album 'In Rainbows' in the style of Mario 64. 2 things that I'm so immensly fond of combined like this has brought me so much joy. Here's my favourite track if you'd like to play a bit of it on the podcast: https://on4word.bandcamp.com/track/weird-fishes-arpeggi What other mashups between games and other media do you wish would become a reality?

PoorAndCurly

Is Hi-Fi Rush this years Nobody Saves the World? Game comes out of nowhere in January and is quite good.

thejjuan1

Hello minnmax crew With the recent announcements, shutdowns and delisting of Marvel’s Avengers and Rumbleverse (sorry Leo). What do you personally do when something like this happens ? Do you buy/download the games before they are gone, to say you played them. Do you not, in fear you might like the game and join in the few that will be sad when they do get shut down. Or are you like me when you see the news, be sad for those players but don’t play those games because you had NO interest in them before and even now as they shut down. P.S does that mean Live a Live join the two 10s 2022, now that rumbleverse is being delisted?

Adam Cohen

Hello MinnMax crew, I've been playing Hi-Fi Rush this week and I have to ask, why is breaking boxes in video games so much fun? I actually get excited when I see a box to break and am disappointed when there's boxes I can't. It's like each box contains a little bit of serotonin. Do you all experience this too?

Shimmy Neutron

Dear Jeff M. You're the best. It's a thought that's crossed my mind beforehand, but never was I compelled to say so till you gave a brilliant breakdown of forspoken and fire emblem. I laughed, I cheered, and I raised my hands to the sky, "praise the sun" style. I don't have social media and this is why. Rando people behaving as if they were thespians about writing in games. It drives me crazy. Never has someone actually broken down in detail the proper techniques to use and how this line is bad or whatnot. Just say the word cringe.... Enter Jeff the Great. With actual skills and understanding of writing. Saying it's fine, not great, but fine enough. Which is all I needed to feel sane again. Shout out to Hansen with the Japan shade, he ain't right, but he ain't wrong neither. Thank you all for being a beacon of reason in a sea of haterade. Kyle's score is spot on. 7.5. 10 hours in still having fun. Thanks

David Sobiegraj

Hello MMers! Now that GI has released their GotY issue and Kyle's top 10 has been revealed and now everyone in the groups top 10s are known. Using each person's list I assigned point values from 10-1 to the list to compile the mathematically "correct" 2 10s. Thanks! David S. 1. Elden Ring - 59 2. God of War Ragnarok - 43 3. Vampire Survivors - 23 4. Kirby and the Forgotten Land - 21 5. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - 20 6. Horizon Forbidden West - 17 7. Citizen Sleeper - 16 Tie 8. Pokemon Legends Arceus - 15 Immortality - 15 Tie 10. Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope - 14 Pentiment - 14 12. Tinykin - 11 13. Splatoon 3 - 10 Tie 14. Marvel's Midnight Suns - 9 Hardspace Shipbreaker - 9 Tie 16. Nobody Saves the World - 8 The Case of the Golden Idol - 8 Tie 18. Live A Live - 7 OlliOlli World - 7 Cult of the Lamb - 7 Rumbleverse - 7 Signalis - 7 Pokémon Scarlet/Violet - 7

Graham Jones

Hey MaxiMinnians, With the poor graphical quality of the most recent Pokemon games and the development of games like Temtem, DokeV and Palworld, it's got me thinking... what do you think it would take for fans to move away from the Pokemon franchise? Are there any specific mechanics or quality of life improvements you think would make people move onto different IPs? Thanks for all the great content you release!

Andy Dwyer

Hi Minnmaxers, Is there an aspect of games you think should be discussed more in game reviews/discussions? For me it’s games not scoping the length of the game to match the length of the content. I find too often an area will feel empty or the combat grows dull well before the end of the game. This can also lead to pacing issues that hurt the impact of the story.

Nick from Atlanta

Hello Cohorts! Partially inspired by Janet's recent experience with Jak 2, what's the most frustrating or generally negative experience you've had replaying a game you love? For me, one that sticks out is replaying Twilight Princess. The mini-boss in the Goron Mines rolls at you, but the way the prompt looked on the Wii U, I thought it was telling me to repeatedly Press A to repel the attack. Turns out, you were supposed to Hold A. It took way too long for me to figure out they actually wanted me to Hold instead of Press, and really ruined my replay. Thanks, Nick from Atlanta

Hunter Blessing

Hi MinnMaximus, If you were an NPC in Grand Thef Auto and your car was hijacked, what song is the main character listening to when they drive off in your car?

Patrick Hughes

Hello hello good folks of MinnMax! I'm excited to be starting a new job tomorrow from IT Support to Graphic Design, so finally putting my college degree as an art major more into use haha. Wish me luck! Question for the week - Everyone has opinions on the voice casting for the Mario Movie. Assuming they make a Zelda or Metroid movie in the future, should Link and/or Samus have voice acting? Discuss.

Andrew Burnes

What physical game has spent the most time inserted in one of your consoles? Handheld consoles count. I think Pokemon Diamond or Pearl in my original fat DS is my best guess.

Duderado

Hey y'all, When is the last time you "popped off" on a game? For those uninitiated, a pop-off is when you do an elaborate celebration or otherwise completely dominate a game. I can't help but pop-off out of my seat in celebration when I win a match of Fall Guys. Eat my dust, 6 year olds!

Troy Ellison

Hey cohorts! What was you last "oh my god, I get it now" game? After releasing on the ps5 last year, I finally got around to playing Inscryption, and was blown away seeing how the games mystery unfolded. I completely understand all the hushed enthusiasm for it now, and am glad I got to experience it's best twists fresh

lilfresh

Hello Ben and crew! Something semi-interesting I’ve noticed is that most reviewers of media are usually hesitant to criticize an actor/actress’s performance in a high production movie/tv show/game, but have no problem saying things like “the writing is sub-par” or “the direction is confused”. The last acting performance in a major production that I can remember being universally panned was probably Hayden Christensen in the Star Wars prequels (and now a lot of people have come back around on that). I’m probably missing a more recent example, but still I think it’s a rare thing. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to a review and heard something like “The performances were fine, but the story…” Is this just me? Am I nuts?!? Why do you think this is? Maybe because we can see their faces and we feel awkward criticizing them? Thanks!

Matthew Weatherley

Hi Everyone. With the rumour this week that all of the big players won't be present at e3 do you think there is an opportunity for the show to evolve into something different and maybe even better. What is your vision of a perfect e3 without sony, nintendo, or microsoft. What would add, change, or take away. The sky is the limit. Give me your best pitch to save e3. Also your recent hifi rush interview was awesome. Thanks for all your hard work everyone.

Xavior.spirit

Not sure if this question has been asked. I had experience with a few different games where I was so hooked I was still subconsciously playing them well talking to people. I have a vivid memory of playing candy crush in my mind while having a conversation with my boss. I knew at that time I was into deep and had to delete the game. Does this resonate with anyone? I’d love to hear the story.

MyNameIsDan

Hi friends, It seems like we go through cycles every year of layoffs that hit gaming outlets which then triggers a response from those active in this space to give their take on the status of the games journalism landscape in that point in time and the future. As active members in the space, do you think games journalism and coverage will change drastically within the next 5 years? Thanks, Dan

Logan Krause

Hey MinnMaxers! With live service games being a big part of todays world have you ever stopped to consider that you’ll one day have to say goodbye to your character? Destiny 1 has been around for awhile, but we know with D2 and I’m sure D3 the character you spent so long with will one day disappear into the ether. I am a big Old Republic mmo player, but realize it isn’t the most popular and I cherish my time with my characters, but know that one day I’ll have to say goodbye. Have you ever felt this way? Am I too emotional? Lol Thanks, Logs

Funky Duck

Hey MinnMax, I loved the interview about Hi-Fi Rush's development. In it, the director mentioned that the shadow drop might have actually helped the studio make a successful pivot out of their usual genre because there wasn't much time for speculation -- the game had a chance to speak for itself. How often do you think the long conversation about a game before release actually hurts expectations or impressions while playing? Is it a necessary part of the industry?

Sokkaittome

Hello minnmax! With the popularity of vampire survivors it seems very easy for a big studio to take that formula and create their own game using the same concepts. With vampire survivors clearly using castlevania as their theme what other properties do you think would make a fun clone for lack of a better term? Zelda seems like an easy answer for me. Plenty of enemies, characters, areas, and weapons to build upon in an already thoroughly enjoyed world. Any ideas?

Zatch Moore

Hello Minnmax! This question is for Jeffm. How have you learned to juggle a small child with your gaming, and has it affected your general interes in video games ? I have a two year old son, and with the rare times I get to game nowadays I find myself losing interest quickly or stopping to do any of the endless chores that come with toddlers. Thank you guys!
