Hello MinnMax Crew, Thank you all for your delightful and joyous insights on the gaming community. I’m currently a graduate student, studying film and new media (particularly games). I’m curious if you think there is space and interest in deep, thematic explorations of games and potential interpretations and impacts. Video essays, like those from Jacob Geller (shoutout) have clearly showcased that such exploration is possible. How can we in the academic community ensure that our work is not insular, and can actually reach people who are regularly engaging with games media? What specific games would benefit from academic explorations? Thank you, Caleb

Hiya, I recently built my first gaming pc and wow I’m in love! For me the main thing it has opened up is the use of mouse and keyboard as inputs. After a bit of a learning curve, m+k seems to offer and intriguing and unique way to interface with games. So I’m wondering: do you have any suggestions for games that make particularly good use of mouse and keyboard controls?

Seabass

I know huge open world games get a bad wrap, but you ever get excited to see what that big ole map looks like? I still get pumped the first time I hit the touchpad in a new game to see how all my info is going to be organized over the next 40 or so hours. On a separate note, I may have OCD.

Garrett Wainstock

Where do you think all the LABO kits are now? It has been five years, which means many of the kids that built them are teenagers and need the closet space for clothes and grunge CDs.

RickyWinterborn

how much could Max minnmax minn, if a minned max could max minn?

Eamon Hardiman

Will shows such as House Hunter Rise, House Hunter Rise, and House Hunter Rise ever return with more episodes? Also wondering about House Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. I am not addicted.

MarriottPlayer

Hey MinnMax, do you reheat your pizza in the microwave? Asking for a friend. Have a great day!

Phelix Diaz

In which game have you been able to recreate the more accurate version of yourself using a create a character system?

KiwiTheGoo

Hey crew, in the 40 gaming predictions episode you were trying to figure out the song behind a Christmas toy you had growing up Hanson. If my hearing is true and your humming was accurate, it's called Daisy Bell. It was used to creepy effect in 2001: A Space Odyssey and was the first song ever "sung" by a computer. See link: https://youtu.be/jsz09z1_AI0

Weird question: How many video game soundtracks CDs/albums do you all have, either as a bundle with a limited edition or as a stand alone purchase? Cheers!

Michael Berry

Hey Minnmax! If this panel went on a magical school bus adventure with Ms. Frizzle, what would you want it to be? Personally, I would like to go into space and find out what is up with black holes. Appreciate you all. P.S. What emotions do you think Arnold has towards the rest of his class for driving a bus around in his body?

John Utke

Hey crew. I was unfortunately laid off in the recent wave of layoffs in the tech industry. I'm doing ok and I'll be fine in the long run, but I've been in a funk and haven't really been able to get myself to play games since. I have Ragnarok just staring at me half completed, but I've got a mountain of guilt and anxiety preventing me from picking up a controller. Any tips on how I can get over that hump and just take a minute to unwind? P.s. any chance MinnMax is hiring programmers? Gotta shoot my shot.

Vilis

For Athia, dear MinnMaxxers! Has anyone on the show played enough of Forspoken to address the truly greatest foible of the marketing team? Yes, I'm talking about the glaring lack... of mentioning all the magical cats you can collect in the game. And all of the cat quests in the city. Where is the cat coverage on this game?

BearCommando

Has anyone noticed that the amount of lotion in tissues “with lotion” has significantly decreased in the past decade? They used to be a lot wetter.

Alex Britt

I just finished playing the Dead Space Remake and howdy, did that game get a lot of things right! Especially how all the HUD elements are diagetic to the game, making it all feel so real. Why do you think other games haven't tried to minimize HUDs using in game stuff?

Kevin Kennedy

Hi MinnMax! I’m hoping it’s been long enough since you’ve answered this question that you find it fresh since I’m sure you’ve answered it in the past, but… I’m about to go on a cross-country flight. What’s the best Switch game for an airplane? I have Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope queued up. I was thinking maybe Animal Crossing since I failed to get into it the first time, but will the real-time cycle stop me from grinding it out? I’ve already put 90 hours into Stardew Valley, but it’s been long enough that it may be time to restart… What are you favorites games or genres to dig into on a flight?

MickManga

Hiya number loving cohorts. Okay I know numbers aren't for everyone. But with the Switch surpassing both the Ps4 and Game Boy in sales, all that remains is the DS and PS2. It's got roughly 30 million left to go. So let's all make a prediction will the Switch be the best selling system ever? Or will Nintendo stop it momentum by releasing a new console?

Josh LaBaw

Video Production Question. Ben is that big new PC rendering video extra quick? Was it the graphics card, the processor, both...? I have an Nvidia 1660 & Adobe seems to render nearly the same using Hardware Acceleration or not. What's the trick?

Cole kreider

This past Saturday I went out and bought an Xbox Series S because of this game I’m not sure many of you have heard of called Hi-Fi Rush. When is the last time the reviews and praise of the game made you go out and buy a new console?

Jeorin

Hey MinnMax crew and friends, Decided to play Fable Anniversary recently, and it inspired my question this week: Farting - Funny or Faux Pas?

Azza G

Hey again! I'm entering my 3rd year of Uni and work is a nightmare too, so I've just realised I might need to take a break from playing as much as I normally would. I'm a little upset I might not be able to play as many games as I normally would, but I'll try and stay current by listening to podcasts. So I was wondering, what is the biggest break from gaming you've ever had to take. Was it a choice? Did you consciously decide to stop or did it just happen? Did you enjoy it? Do you see yourself taking a break from games again? Thank you!

Marc Levender

Hey Ben and Friends! I’d like to think I am a huge entertainment media and pop culture consumer in general, but due to casting a wide net of my interests between all the different entertainment mediums like music/movies/tv/games/sports/and more recently podcasts and youtube content, I feel like there are some major gaps in my knowledge within any one form of entertainment, and sometimes I get jealous of people who seem to invest their time in just one or two of these mediums without much interest in the others who have a larger degree of knowledge or more expertise in these areas because of it. Does that make sense? Sometimes I wish I was more committed to a single form of entertainment that I could really deep dive into fully, instead of dabbling in all of them. Can anyone else relate to this jack of all mediums master of none kind of mentality? How do you find a balance of all of your interests in a way that you ultimately feel satisfied with?

Which is stronger: Leo's love for Hitman or Sarah's love for Final Fantasy 14?

Cath

Hey everyone. Just to put more love in the world please say one thing you like/admire about each other! No bummer! Just love!

Keenan Horrell

Hey Ben and Crew, For this weekend's Super Bowl Party our theme is potato. I need to make a potato dish and I hear the best in town is Minnesota Hot Dish. Can the gang decide on the best recipe I should use for the party? Don't make me look like a fool!

DubZe27

Hey, Why isn't Leo on more? He is funny Thanks

So one of the joys of being a parent is introducing your kids to some of your passions. While my son doesn’t like “ those people you always listen to talking about videogames” … he is starting to love videogames and it’s awesoem. What’s your favorite memory of where you got someone into gaming or another shared passion of yours?

Patrick Hughes

Ahoy MinnMax and crew. In the highly possible event that a special edition of Tears of the Kingdom is announced at or near after the Nintendo Direct, I extend my best wishes to all who will be repeatedly hitting F5 for the next many hours. May this reminder serve you well. In that spirit, what is your favorite collector's / special edition of a game or other piece of media ever released? Cheers and happy refreshing!

Zae

Hey Minnmax I recently restarted an 8 hour play through of Persona 3 Portable so I could play as the female main character. In Pokémon Sword and Shield, I restarted the game twice because I thought the opposite gender had better clothing and then decided the outfits weren’t worth it. Is there any reason you’ll restart a game hours in, and have there been any games you’ve restarted in the past for a small reason?

PhillyYeetSteak

Hey Ben and crew! I have a game for you… Below are pairs of mission titles from either a Lego game or a Grand Theft Auto game. Your job is to guess which is which (you only need to identify the franchise, not the specific game). Bonus points for anyone that can come up with a clever name for this game. [For Ben: I will have the answers in brackets] 1. Black Rider [Lego Lord of the Rings] Ruff Rider [GTA IV] 2. Blast from the Past [Lego City Undercover] Demolition Man [GTA Vice City] 3. Never Tell Me the Odds [Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga] Against All Odds [GTA San Andreas] 4. Monkey Business [GTA V] Monkey Mischief [Lego Indiana Jones 2] 5. Undermined [Lego The Incredibles] The Fuzz Ball [GTA 3] 6. So Near, Yet Sonar [GTA Chinatown Wars] Europe Against It [Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham]

From the pre-life-changing-nintendo-direct world: Was the Zelda trailer confusing? Could they have shown more gameplay? Was the new Pikmin type sick? Is the new 3D Mario game coming out later this year? Please?

D M

Did you ever play an "educational video game" growing up (or as an adult) and actually learn something? Surely someone must credit their geography skills to carmen sandiego or their typing prowess to Mario Teaches typing".

Did the 360 and PS3 generation pack all the linear 3rd person shooters that could ever exist? It´s so hard nowadays to find short and dumb 3rd person games like Binary Domain, Vanquish, Lost Planet, Wet or Army of Two. It´s like the industry got so exhausted of releasing so many of those during the 7th generation that they decided to only do open world or multiplayer third person shooters for the rest of time.

Hey Ben and crew, Something has been on my mind me since last week when I watched the Cozy Holiday Feast (please excuse the long read, but…) Ben, remember when you asked “Do babies get sad?” (at 1:52:51) While you SOUNDED a bit out of touch and robot-like in your tone, it’s actually a fascinating topic. I wanted to share just 1 point of interest. I’m a huge fan of psychology and some recent classes I’ve taken have helped explain that emotions have a connection point to language. That connection point is our thoughts. Negative feelings come from negative thoughts, and negative thoughts require language (specifically COMPLEX negative thoughts). Think about it, you can’t actually feel sad about something if you don’t have an articulate, sad thought behind it. Take a basic example like “I’m a failure.” You not only would need the vocabulary to articulate that, you would also need some social context to be able to allow the concept of “a failure” to have any affect on you. When it comes to babies, they of course have feelings and emotions. But their emotions evolve dramatically as they begin to understand language. More evidence of this has been found in a few very disturbing cases where children were kept in solitary confinement without social interaction and without language. After freeing those people, and teaching them to speak, they would explain that before they learned to communicate, their feelings felt very basic… “like this feels bad, this feels good.” And so when it comes to needs being met, do babies feel sad? It depends on how much they understand language. Lastly, maybe we can take the example you all discussed of pooping your pants. Would a small baby be sad? The answer: probably not. Uncomfortable? Absolutely. Frustrated? Maybe. But even if they were left for days without being changed (as was the example), sadness would require they felt neglected, and the concept of neglect would require some deeper details that can only be articulated and defined through language. Turns out “do babies get sad” isn’t quite the absurd question it may have sounded like at first.

While playing Callisto Protocol I noticed a feature was missing, a feature lacking in MOST titles where you aim a gun and shoot things to solve your problems(95% of all video games). The small, simple, quality of life ability to change which shoulder you fire from… I absolutely adore the feature in MGS4, and all shooters should implement this! What simple, quality of life feature have you enjoyed in a game, and then felt frustration when it was absent? Don’t get me started on Gears of War’s reloading mechanic. After that, reloading guns in other games is just so… BORING!

Mathias Jülich

Hey Ho! Which of the known indie releases of 2023 do you think have the highest chance of cracking the two tens this year? Is anybody ready to bet that any indie will be more critically acclaimed than Silksong?

Zatch Moore

Hello Minnmax! This question is for Leo. If your last name could be any other surname from the star wars universe what would it be? Leo Jettster has a nice ring to it. Thanks!

bizkiut (Nick S.)

Hello CLCs and Jill! Throughout my gaming years, my friends and I have always made up stupid names for games we have been playing. Right now the Dark and Darker play test is usually called Dork and Dorker (Dumb and Dumber is also acceptable). One of my favorites was Terrorists for Terraria because it would always autocorrect on our phones (probably put us on some government watch lists for how many times we would text it!) Have you every used nicknames for games? If so, what are your favorites? Thanks and happy Nintendo Direct day!

Andy Dwyer

Hi Minnmaxers, Is there an indie game you would want to see remade/reimagined with a AAA team/budget?

Graham Jones

What do you think would be the title of untitled goose game if it actually had a title? Something to do with grey ducks maybe?!

mag

Hi MinnMax, Rumors have been going around that Nintendo will be jumping on the $70 bandwagon for the Zelda release. On top of the eShop "accidentally" leaking the price, It would make sense they use TotK to push a price increase for their 1st party games because it's garanteed to sell like hot cakes. If that rumor is true, would you feel like this is justified by inflation and high production costs, or unfair for a 6 years old system?

Ray Sweat

Hey gang, As a fellow millennial I must ask, "why does Nintendo hate easy money?" Give us what we want! Just port over a 3D Zelda collection, or even a 2D Zelda collection. A 2D Metroid collection would be easy money too. Am I being too naive? Is it not that simple? P.S. Playing Chrono Cross right now and listening to your deepest dive has been a treat. Thanks

Daniel Bishop

Hello Ben, Leo, Jill, and Sarah! Its time for the MinnMax sports book to field your bets! I have put together betting lines for some of the biggest games coming out this year, all you have to do is guess whether these games will score higher or lower on Metacritic than the line given: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - 92.5 Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 - 88.5 Starfield - 86.5 Resident Evil 4 Remake - 89.5 Redfall - 80.5 Hollow Knight: Silksong - 90.5 Final Fantasy 16 - 86.5 Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League - 81.5 Diablo 4 - 86.5 Street Fighter 6 - 88.5

Hello Minnows and Maxels, I have a hypothetical for you. You can choose any game/franchise, and it immediately receives a green-lighted new game. This game would have an unlimited budget, the perfect number of staff, and no time constraints or technological hurdles. Basically, it can be the "perfect" version of whatever it has the potential to be. However, once this game is released, there would never be another game or sequel in that series ever again. What game would you pick? Do you go with a long-standing franchise that can go out with a bang? A game that should have gotten a sequel but never did? Do you even choose at all??? Much love for you all and how hard you work producing content!

henrik mortensen

Hallo! I find it weird that in video game media a hope and a demand for sequels never die out. A demand for a sequel to Bloodborne, Uncharted, Banjo Tooie and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will probably never dissapear where no one asks or are counting on The Godfather Part IV, Moana 2 and Inception 2. What is up with that? And seriously where is Fast and the Furious 2!? Hate your Show!

CrabPalace

I was watching a rap battle and the rapper Tony D said "I am way off from the norm. I engage god to play dodge with the raindrops in the storm." What's the coolest sh*t you've ever heard?

Ben with one N

Hey MinnMax crew, have you all played any Steam Next Fest demos that have surprised you? It isn’t much, but I played a short demo called Mika and the Witch’s Mountain, which is essentially a game version of Kiki’s Delivery Service. I was immediately hooked on the concept, as simple as it currently is. I’d love to hear any recommendations for cool demos anyone has played!

Joebeezer

So how ‘bout that price hike? I’m assuming that the rumors are true and Tears of the Kingdom is going to sell for an MSRP of seventy U.S. dollars. How does everyone feel about a price hike for individual games mid-console life cycle? I’ve personally always found the homogeneous price of games to be odd. Shouldn’t the price of a game be based on cost to make + what customers are willing to pay? I am curious to hear your thoughts.

Luca Alberti

Nintendo's financials report released, Switch has become the 3rd best-selling gaming hardware of all time, PS2 and DS are still within reach, but sales are declining. Place your bets now, will the hybrid take the crown in the end and why?

MttThms

I'm looking to move out of Florida next year and Minneapolis is one of the cities I'm considering moving to. I was wondering if you could tell me how you like living there, the good and the bad, and maybe point me toward some areas to look at.
