You can only use d-pads or analog sticks for the rest of your life. Which do you choose? You can still play any game from any era and use any compatible controller, but you can only use your chosen input method. Remapping of controls is allowed when possible.

Hello, Ben and friends! Congratulations on the Boss Fight Books entry, Kelsey, I can’t wait to read it! I’m about halfway through the Double Fine PsychOdyssey, and words can't express how thankful I am to have such a thorough and well-crafted document of the making of any piece of art or media as it actually happens… not a retrospective, not a third-party "deepest dive," just literal cameras rolling over a period of years. Aside from the Double Fine Adventure and Amnesia Fortnight docs, is there anything even remotely comparable?

Aaron U

How do you feel about unnecessary game play? For example, in The Last of Us there are many moments of pushing a dumpster to climb up a ledge or throwing Ellie up to a ledge for her to lower a ladder to you. Why can't the ladder just be there ready to climb? Why do I need to always perform a task?

Hey friends, Metroid Prime Remastered has been an absolute delight for me as a Metroid fan. Since I have only ever played the 2D/2.5D games, I am now experiencing that wonder and bewilderment that comes with traversing this beloved franchise in a 3d space. I haven't really had this sensation since the N64 era with OoT. It's not quite to the level of that since I'm not a third grader anymore, but it still feels a bit surreal. No question here - just writing in to express my appreciation for the game/remaster and to show that these types of experiences are still able to be had all these years later. Thanks, Dan

Of the games in the following list, which are from Dreams, and which were played on Steam's Secret Stash? (All Dreams games were nominated for Impys, so they aren't SUPER obscure). With the last few interviews, I have noticed more and more websites picking up MinnMax as a source for their short, regurgitant articles, with the recent God of War Ragnarok interview being picked up the most. A coworker in India even shared your tweet linking the video to our gaming slack channel today. What are your thoughts on where MinnMax is as an outlet and what its presence in the space is like now?

HoneyBoy

Hey Ben and friends whats your favorite game manual? i like how the manhunt manual looks like a catalog for snuff vhs tapes, and my second one would be MGS IV (4) cause its a lengthy comic book showing the player the controls. with this $70 price increase wish they would give us manuals back.

KiwiTheGoo

One of the things I really value about MinnMax is your wide variety of game tastes. From Ben "RTS enjoyer" Hanson, to Kelsey, "blast from the past" Lewin, and my indie artsy dude, Jacob Geller, the crew casts a wide net. What is a genre of video games that you feel is least represented by the CLCs? Is this a consideration when bringing on new talent?

Duderado

Howdy crew, Can I put Kyle on the spot? Why doesn't he appear in any in-person videos? We've seen Leo, Sarah, and JeffM in various New Show + episodes but have yet to see our favorite redhead make an appearance. I demand more Kyle content!

Josh64

Hiya MinnMax! Holy cow leave it to Nintendo to really blur the lines between remaster and remake! From the movement to the controls to the visuals, it all somehow feels new and fresh while still just being the same game I played twenty years ago.I know it’s become the trend to dunk on Switch hardware but this game really does look and play fantastic. No question just wanna sing it’s praises.

YoCallMeRob

Hey Minnmax Do you guys think Horizon Call of the Mountain will have the same problem of being too polished, similar to Forbidden West.

The rhetoric around Hogwarts Legacy suggests that it is transphobic to buy it, play it, or speak positively about it. In fact, Ben’s diplomatic idea, curiously locked behind the Party Chat paywall, that you can play the game and enjoy it and make your own choices is itself supposedly promoting and affirming other people’s transphobia. While the rest of the tepidly “woke Days Gone-hating games media” might let MinnMax get away with simply not playing the game even if you don’t actively support trans rights or feature trans people on video content, actual critical race theory radicals would not believe you are morally clean because you have a white male patriarch telling people it’s okay to be a transphobe while the rest of the staff remains noncommittally silent. Personally, I think this rhetoric is authoritarian, misogynistic, and unfortunately makes transness look like a toxic political phenomenon rather than an utterly normal gender phenomenon with a political debate around it. On the other side, any refusal to cover this game is seen as a cancel culture action against JK Rowling as well as a declaration of disinterest in allowing people to form their own opinions, regardless of your stated intentions. But what do you all actually think? And why would you paywall this discussion?

Hello MinnMax! Another quick game for you all: Ship it or Skip it! This year is going to be massive for new game releases. However, there has been a recent trend of games being cancelled or shut down within a year of launch, making games feel less safe to invest time and money into. For the following games, you will choose to either "Ship it" - launch the game as is, just to get it out there "Skip it" - delay the game out of this year, to potentially save it Skull and Bones Redfall Crash Team Rumble Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Tom Clancy's XDefiant The Last of Us Factions Exoprimal Diablo IV ARC Raiders

I have a question for Kelsey. Recently, I went down a youtube rabbit hole that consisted of early arcade cabinets. In doing so, I stumbled upon some of Sega's earliest cabinets which were electro mechanical machines. My favorite cabinets were Sega Gun Fight, a 2 player western standoff game that used controllable cowboy action figures, and Sega Jumbo, where you control a toy elephant that throws a metal ball at a trapeze artist in a circus. I find these machines to be just fascinating, yet I never heard of those being celebrated or highlighted in any meaningful way. I was wondering what the archival process is for these novel and unique cabinets? Also, are there any museums that highlight electro mechanical cabinets? Thank you for what you do preserving video game history!

AlexTheSnood

Hi MinnMax! Kelsey wrote a book? That’s freaking incredible, big congrats to her. Does anyone else on the crew have a secret book idea that they’d like to write out one day? If not a book, do each of you have a passion project squirreled away in the back of your mind that you’d love to work on? Thanks for any insight into your secret passions 😈 Thank you for making the show, and have a great day!

Hello Minnies and Maxies! Watching the latest Last of Us series got me thinking about the upcoming God of War adaptation and one question popped to mind. Do you think and/or want them to make it as a single shot, like the recent games are (not literally obvs, stitched together to look like it)?

Simon Kirwin

I appreciate that we finally have gameboy games on switch virtual console but where in the sam heck is our classic pokemon games!? It's complete insanity that we do not have access to even one classic mainline pokemon game other than the BDSP remakes and even those have had modern conveniences included to make the game easier. I want my Rapidash to get one shot by the elite four without being saved by the power of friendship. I want to heal at the pokecentre after every battle. I want to wander aimlessly through a dark cavern because I haven't found flash yet. Give us our classic pokemon games now!

Starkiller

Heya MinnMax crew, What are your opinions on, what I call, the "Destiny-fication" of video game UI/UX? Ever since Destiny came out, a lot of games have used the "control stick as a cursor" and "hold to confirm" method of interacting. It drives me nuts on console because I want to use the control stick to navigate, not as a crappy, slow cursor. And hold to confirm on PC just slows menus way down.

beebat

Hello Minnmax, What is the best gesture to use when greeting someone and why is it the fist bump? 🤜🤛

Troy Ellison

Hi Minnmax, So a couple week's on the podcast Jacob Geller bequeathed the titled of "Himbo King" onto Chai from Hi-Fi Rush and it got wondering: what is it about himbos that have made them a beloved character trope?

Zane Dukes

Last week y’all talked about how Indies don’t need to strive to be AAA games, and that got me thinking. What are some indie games that AAA studios should strive to be or surpass? Stardew Valley and Hollow Knight come to mind for me.

Nick Friendt

So I got into an argument with my friend over the destiny 2 hunter triple jump. He says because all characters/people can jump once, the ABILITY isn’t triple jumping, it’s double jumping after the initial jump, therefore the ability is double jump. My argument, the sane argument, is obviously that your character is jumping three times, so it’s a triple jump, regardless of what other classes can do. Am I the crazy one??

hey minnheads, very serious question here: relaxing on the beach, you find a seagull with a small wizards hat approaching you. he speaks to you, telepathically, and offers you a proposition: you may fully inhabit and become a seagull, albeit a normal one without the powers (or hat) of the Seagull Wizard, for as little or as long as you like. when that time is up, you are returned to your human body on the beach as if nothing happened (but with all your seagull memories). you may choose a country for the seagull you inhabit to be from, but the Seagull Wizard cannot guarantee or predict exactly where in the country the seagull will be located when you take control. additionally, if you die as a seagull your human body dies too. the soul and mind of the seagull you inhabit is unharmed unless this happens, they will otherwise be returned to their seagull body as if nothing happened when your predetermined time is up. how long would you say you would like to be a seagull? also, small side note, the Seagull Wizard says he will kill you with one of his spells if you decline his offer

Hi CLC's! What game do you use to explain to non-gamers how emotionally rich and unique game stories can be? Mine is the ending of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, since its gut punch is heightened through the physicality of playing the game itself.

Collector//Emitter

Hey cohorts - with all the talk of the Last of Us show, what do you think makes for a good video game adaptation? One that brings the game into a new light in the new medium, one that expands upon the world, one that brings in new fans who were not familiar with the game, or something else? I keep hearing the love for the show but I personally have not been loving it, which has me wondering what the heart of a good adaptation is.

Caleb Ward

Hi friends (: with the recent selection of “now available” releases, I challenge you to imagine a world in which all games are “shadowdropped,” without marketing campaigns. What impact would this have on your relationship to new games? Are there any games you would lament not having an excitement crescendo for? Other thoughts on this cloudy with a chance of Mother 3 world? Thank you!

Joe Dean

We need to talk about hot Ganon! After the last Nintendo Direct Sarah dedicated an entire stream to why Tears of the Kingdom should have hot Ganon doing a face turn, so I want to know your thoughts on sexy good Ganon? Should Ganon be irredeemable, or after so much time should be have finally become a good person and also be hot? Will it happen in TOTK? Supporting evidence for him being hot is that his voice (assuming it's his) doesn't sound like it belongs to the dried up shell, but to a moisturized Ganon. Thank you, Joe Dean

Reed

Hi MinnMaxx (looking forward to this spelling again at The Game Awards), What is the first demake you remember? Or what do you consider the first demake? It doesn't need that word in the title. I think of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater for PlayStation getting a version for Game Boy Color in 2000. Later Tony Hawk titles got similar treatment too.

Patrick Hughes

Ahoy good folks of MinnMax. There seemed to be a few Cucco feathers ruffled by the $70 price tag of Tears of the Kingdom. My question - Why are we as gamers so affixed to "AAA" games having a fixed pricing point? Indie games are priced variably as determined by what the developers feel fairly reflects their time / effort making the product. Why do we tolerate big sports titles releasing iterative minimal changes annually for full retail prices of $60 / $70, but raise eyebrows when a new Zelda game 6 years in development asks for an extra $10? We accept Dead Space Remake (a remake of a 2008 title) as a $70 next gen title, but we question the value of Metroid Prime Remastered (a remaster of a 2002 title) priced at $40. Is it time to reassess our thinking on the perceived pricing expectations for AAA games?

Joey

Greetings from an alternate universe, Things are pretty similar here. As far as I can tell the main difference is that in 2013 we all decided we were happy with the gaming we had and we didn’t need any technical advancements. The releases of Xbox one and ps4 were abruptly cancelled. The same is true for all the adjacent industries; microchips still have the same processing power and our tvs are 1080p. Since game developers allocated their resources away from ray-tracing and teraflops, I imagine our games are pretty different from yours. Who do you think is happier with their gaming, you or me? I know you might list off all the great games you’ve played since 2013 that aren’t possible for us but I assure you, we’ve also got some sweet games that you don’t have.

SlyCut

Hello all, You know that scene at the beginning of Peter Pan when the father trips over Nana the dog, wipes out hard, and the family rushes over to the dog and says "Poor Nana..." ignoring the father? The other night during dinner, my daughter was talking using her hands and knocked my full glass of milk into my lap. My daughter looks at my wife and says, "Sorry, Mom..." Aghast, I say, "'Sorry, Mom?' POOR NANA!?" Everyone found that hilarious. Have any of you ever had a "Poor Nana?" moment?

Fabian Katthöfer

Hey CLCs, with the launch of Hogwards Legacy I started thinking about video game adaptations based an books. For me Hogwards Legacy might be the best in this regard - can you think of any more great ones? Keep up the good work! Fabian

IanTClark

Hey Ben! Ask Kyle if he’s watch the new Nate Bargatze special, “Hello World” on Amazon Prime. What’s his favorite Nate bit? Also, did Kyle know that Nate does the VO for the Aperture Desk Job game on the Steam Deck?

Jacob Thompson

Hey Cohorts! So early impressions of Wild Hearts seem to be very positive! After watching some gameplay, it looks to be more streamlined than Monster Hunter, plus it looks easier to pull off cool looking movies. Do you think it has any chance of approaching the sales numbers of the Monster Hunter games? For reference, Monster Hunter World sold around 20 million worldwide, and Monster Hunter Rise sold around 11 million as of last November.

Joshua Ayers

Hey minnstrels and maxillae, the merry faces of gaming news. Is there a game you think of when I say "the best story told in the worst way"? I love Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning but I'll never forget how they saved a very interesting info dump for the run-up to the final boss... in a crumbling dungeon... that cut off dialogue if you ran the correct speed to avoid being crushed by rocks. Unforgivable!

Tokyo Game Life

Hi MinnMax, Names of titles in the Kirby franchise start with either “Kirby” or the possessive “Kirby’s”. Let’s see if you can match the subtitle with the correct usage of Kirby. Dream Land (Kirby’s) Air Ride (Kirby) Epic Yarn (Kirby’s) Pinball Land (Kirby’s) Squeak Squad (Kirby) Star Allies (Kirby) Dream Collection (Kirby’s) Drum Dash Deluxe (Dedede’s)

RickyWinterborn

Ben mentioned it somewhere, why is nintendo so weird about crediting studios? Most recently the Metroid Prime remake. Are they trying to keep the studios and talent to themselves? I actually don't why you would hide the studio behind a celebrated game, I can't think of any other company that does that...

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and Friennds, What’s the most important thing you’ve ever googled?

Matthew Weatherley

So I got lazy this week and got CHATGPT to write my question. HERE IS MY REQUEST. Ok so I really need your help to have the best question for the minnmax podcast. It's a podcast about games, friends, and getting better. Can you start with a funny intro to Ben and the crew. Then ask a really cool question about ai in video games. JeffM has spoken about this alot in the past. Then finish up by saying how good they all are and that the podcast is great. Oh and can you make it sound like it's written by an Australian. HERE IS THE RESPONSE. G'day, mates! I hope you're all doing well down there in the States. I wanted to start off by saying that I've been loving the MinnMax podcast lately. Ben, you and the crew crack me up with your banter, and I always learn something new about video games and the industry when I listen. But enough chit-chat - I've got a serious question for you all, especially for JeffM since he's spoken about this before. We've seen some interesting developments in AI in recent years, including auto text generation in video games. This can range from simple things like auto-generated chat responses to more complex applications like procedurally-generated game worlds. So here's my question for the MinnMax crew: What's your take on auto text generation in video games, and how do you see it developing in the future? Do you think it has the potential to revolutionize the gaming experience, or do you worry that it could lead to more formulaic, repetitive games? And while we're on the topic of AI in games, what's the funniest or most absurd thing you've ever seen an AI character do in a video game? On the flip side, what's an example of AI done right, where you were genuinely impressed with the character's actions or behavior? Thanks for all the hard work you put into the podcast - keep up the great work, and keep getting better! Cheers!

Xavior.spirit

Hey Minnmaxer - my Minnmax hat finally came! The reason I bought is was because the Twitter account asked “what would it take to make you a Patreon supporter” and I responded a fitted hat and I was unexpectedly linked to being able to buy it. So my question, when is a time you have been callled out to hold up your end of a barging unexpectedly. Did you rise to the occasion? Thanks, bye!!!

Cade Mead

It feels like every sci-fi, and a lot of fantasy games, have a fleshy, "belly of the beast" level. Every time, it makes me groan. That aesthetic or trope could use some time on ice. What level design or style choice has started to wear on you?

RabidLime

ahoy corhorts, better quest goal: get back to my previous cycling ability... which was mighty. after a health thing knocked me on my butt most of the past year and a half, i've finally gotten back in the saddle and started cycling again. a few eps ago Kyle and Ben were talking about great Steam Deck games for stationary bikes. aside from Vampire Survivors and Dome Keeper, have any other suggestions for workout games? finding a balance of upbeat and mindless is a tall order. i've found Crypt of the Necrodancer is fantastic. hit me with some other workout favorites. best!

Mike Lynch

What game were you most successful with turning people onto? Like, the developers should send you a check with the amount of people you got to play this game.

Boondock-Bandit

What's the most silliest way you've almost gotten maimed or injured? For example the other day I was trying to open a box and used a knife cutting towards me (dumb dumb move), and it slipped and the tip poked me pretty hard in the chest. I checked and realized I was about an inch from my solar plexus, so long story short, almost stabbed myself to assemble a couch.

Luis Garcia

In school did you wear your backpack with one strap or both straps?

Jeorin

Greetings MinnMax cohorts and contributors, No question this week, instead a challenge: Come up with a short pitch to deliver to a suit wearing money person that will convince them to greenlight the game Katamari Damacy.

Andrew Molnar

Take a good, hard look within yourselves. Do you think you would survive in a Last of Us type of apocalyptic event?

henrik mortensen

Hallo I know we like to stay positive on this podcast, but can you name the worst video game you have ever played? I can´t. It is for some reason much easier to name movies and songs that you hate. Hate your show though.

Chris H

Hi cohorts - we have now all seen what a mushroom apocalypse looks like thanks to The Last of Us. My question is: what is the food-based apocalypse you'd be happiest to see?

Ian Switaj

Hello MinnMax! Last week in regards to Metroid Prime Remaster's $40 price tag Kyle said it's, "A little pricey for an older game," and, "...it's a lot for a game that came out a while ago," which I have some issue with given that 1.) $40 was the standard on Gamecube when the first came out; 2.) $60 -- and now pushing $70 -- is the new norm; and 3.) Retro Studios definitely went above and beyond and it's more than just a port of the Gamecube/Wii version of the game. My question for you -- other than whether or not you agree with Kyle's sentiment -- is how do you weigh whether a game is "pricey" or not? Do you have hardset guidelines or does the type of game in question come into play when making such a determination?
