Salutations Ben and the CLCs! After hearing murmurous praise for Shadows of Doubt, I quickly downloaded the demo to live out my very own immersive detective story. After two, 90-minute sessions, I was underwhelmed by the actual "immersive" component of the game . While I have no doubt there's a wealth of features and systems available, I didn't feel like I had any true ownership of what I played. I love the concept of immersive sims, but I often feel they don't know how to communicate their gameplay systems to players....the only exception being Streets of Rogue. Shout out Streets of Rogue! Did you have a similar experience with Shadows of Doubt and what can a dumb-dumb like me do to enjoy these kind of games more?

Hello there! What’s an example of a great journalistic breakthrough for you? Some experience where the lightbulb turned on and you understood your career more deeply?

I've been doing a lot of thinking lately: Final Fantasy has Theatrhythm, Persona has Persona Dancing, and Mario has Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix. Why hasn't Sonic the Hedgehog gotten a rhythm game? I'll take my answer on the air.

Hello, With PsychOdyssey setting the new standard in video game documentaries, which future game would you like to see get this treatment? Or which game from the past would you have liked to see it's development chronicled. My picks: BioSchock, Halo Infinite, and the next mainline Mario. Thanks.

After Ben admitted his sin against humanity that is drinking straight coffee creamer from the bottle, does anyone else have any odd habits they want to discuss?

I went to Dave and Busters for the first time with my wife. While waiting for the chow, someone came by to take our picture saying it was free. So we took the picture. They come back 15 minutes later and show us our picture with a Dave and Busters picture holder/paper frame around it. They ask if we want it, and since it was free, sure! Why not?! Then they say that it will cost $20…. For a picture that took 9 seconds to take… and stuffed in a 75 cent Dave and Buster paper frame with no love.. Because saying “never mind” right after I said yes felt awkward, I agreed to, and paid, to have someone rob me with a camera instead of a gun. First I felt ashamed to say no(am I cheap? it’d be awkward to say no now! this will help the photographer like I’m giving them a tip), and then I felt ashamed for being pressured into saying yes. Afterwards they gave me the free photo too… I felt genuinely violated LOL. Have you ever been pressured into a poor choice? Regret it? Does my wife still think of me as a man and not a yellow bellied coward?

Now that Theatrhythm is out my question is more relevant. How many actual physical CDs do you own of video game soundtrack? I own the soundtrack for Final Fantasy VIII, XV, Persona 3, Nier and Nier: Automata, most of them still wrapped for some reason :) My second question is how do you pronounce Theatrhythm and how do you land on that pronounciation? I say it like Theater without the "er" ad the end and then Rhythm with the emphasis at the beginning of "Rhythm". But I'm from Hungary so... :D (Bonus question: How many times to you mistype the title Theatrhythm?)

Hello all, You know that scene at the beginning of Peter Pan when the father trips over Nana the dog, wipes out hard, and the family rushes over to the dog and says "Poor Nana..." ignoring the father? The other night during dinner, my daughter was talking using her hands and knocked my full glass of milk into my lap. My daughter looks at my wife and says, "Sorry, Mom..." Aghast, I say, "'Sorry, Mom?' POOR NANA!?" Have any of you ever had a "Poor Nana?" moment?

Oi mates. Love the show good vibes to all, but I've been in a tizzy since a couple of shows ago when Jill said indies are the pinnacle of gaming. Maybe I should have reminded myself of the fact that she has biases. Everyone should go check out the indieinformer, but I've been nearly writing a dissertation in my head ever since, but I'll try to be brief. The obvious true answer is they both need each other. There are some things you can only do with money and manpower, and somethings that same money won't allow because they want a return on their investments which can stiffle risk taking. But also what you want out of gaming makes a huge difference. My two biggest reasons to play is 1, immersion. There is no indie more immersive than the best AAA's, they just don't have the budget for the tools necessary. Being the human I am, I find it easier to imagine myself living in a horizon/plague tale etc than a journey/limbo/chicory. 2nd is a desire to see the forefront of the industry. What's the next big thing in game design, art direction, A.I, storytelling etc. I know there are opportunities for that in indies but I'd give the advantage to the A's, again, they have more tools to push the envelope when they decide to example, Neir. My question. How many times do you experience something you feel is pushing the industry forward and on which side on that fence do you experience it more often? Finally, would giving a game like Disco Elysium more of a realistic scale and motion capture facial animations make the game worse? Do we critique indies with the same vigor we do with the A's? Sorry for failing to be brief. I rewrote this 3 times trying lol I have many thoughts.

Howdy gang, For reasons that escape me, my wife played a short montage of old video game console start up noises for me, and the wave of warm and glorious nostalgia that washed over me and briefly thawed my cold dead heart was profound. Is there a sound or noise in gaming that just makes you happy or warmly nostalgic? Keep up the good work!

Tony Mayato

Hello Minn Maxers! Tony from florida here, as I was playing the newly released Legend of Dragoon port for the premium PS subscription, I was reminiscing about how I really miss the old school game manuals. I particularly liked reading up on the characters and any story setting info. Do you guys miss them? And do you have a manual that you remember fondly?

Graham Jones

Hello minn Max with 1 x, I recently was listening to the Lord of the rings soundtrack while doing chores in my apartment and an I noticed an interesting thing about the music. When the hobbit theme played, I felt at home and comfortable but when the theme of the black riders played I felt like someone was creeping up behind me.... I must just have an extra strong reaction to the music because I've seen the movies so many times. But my question is what piece of media gives you this kind of visceral reaction?

Adam Cohen

Hey MinnMax crew, The Patreon goal of featuring your pets is cool, but may I suggest a more urgent one? Please send Leo Vader to E3! Assuming he still wants to go of course. I do remember Leo talking about how he was supposed to go for his first trip several times for GI, but then it kept not happening for various reasons (show cancelled, Covid, etc...) I would raise my Patreon tier for a few months to help get Leo to E3.

bizkiut (Nick S.)

Hello CLCs! Throughout my gaming years, my friends and I have always made up stupid names for games we have been playing. A week ago the Dark and Darker play test is usually called Dork and Dorker (Dumb and Dumber is also acceptable). One of my favorites was Terrorists for Terraria because it would always autocorrect on our phones and then the name just stuck. (probably put us on some government watch lists for how many times we would text it!) Have you every used nicknames for games? If so, what are your favorites? Thanks and happy State of Play day!

Jordan Brown

Hey MinnMax Crew, Imagine you are going out for a night on the town and you get to invite three characters from any game. One is your designated driver who you have to trust to get you home safe, one is the person you think would be the party animal to make the night the most fun, and the last is just a drinking buddy who would be the most enjoyable to just shoot the shit with. Who are you inviting? Jordan B

Hello all, my partner saw the Patreon charge on our credit card bill and she asked if Patreon was like onlyfans. I thought about it for a moment and said "kind of, the hosts have the same raw sex appeal just without all the nakedness." Was my description correct?

The most underrated feature of Final Bar Line so far is the music player on Switch. You can build playlists of your unlocked songs (I've got a favorites, chill FF beats, and songs to show off to normal people playlist), and then listen to them with the screen turned off. I now basically have the ultimate Final Fantasy MP3 collection. Smash Ultimate and Mario Allstars also did this. Have you ever listened to these tracks on the Switch? What game would you want this for next?

PsyduckMantis

Hi Ben, My question is around the phrase “go around the horn”. I’m sure I’ve learned this from hearing you say it in various episodes of the podcast or videos - in my mind it means roughly “take it in turns to say something”. However I used this phrase yesterday at work when talking to a colleague (I live in England) and they had no idea what I was talking about. I then googled the phrase but couldn’t find anything (aside from some NSFW urban dictionary entries). Definitely nothing that fits the definition I have in my head. Please help, is this a Minnesotan thing? Have I misheard/misremembered? To use another Hanson-ism, am I nuts?? For the panel, what’s a phrase or saying you’ve picked up and started using from podcasts or other media without really understanding what it means?

henrik mortensen

Hallo Do you think the soundtrack for Final Fantasy 16 will be implemented in Final Fantasy Theatrhythm as DLC? I always find dlc put in a game after its release rarely gets implemented good in the way that it is always put in its own corner clearly showing it is dlc when I just want it to be a real part of the game. I have not bought any of the dlc for this game so I do not know if it is put in its own corner or not. And talking about FF16 which will have a new composer, I do not think the composers are credited anywhere in the game except for the credits I guess. Hate your show!

RobBobWill

Hello MinnMax crew! What is the most difficult challenge in any single game? There are a ton of answers to this question, but today I would like to submit for your consideration: Spelunky 2 7-99. It's the final, most secret way to beat the game, and it's a grueling multi-hour gauntlet of platforming. The final area is a creative roguelike masterpiece in my opinion, but I can't bring myself to spoil it. A streamer recently reached it after months of trying, and it was incredible to watch. And I've been playing the game somewhat regularly since launch and my PB is still only 7-10. Anyways, I encourage anyone curious to go look up what's involved to get there, because I feel it doesn't have the notoriety it deserves! Here's a link to one of the more popular runs if you'd like to check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOVt2X8Ziqc

Rodrigo Aoun

Hi Cohorts ! Here's a question you're free to take as simply or as intricately as you like : If you were a game director, what genre of game would you like to take on? What kind of games would you make? And for a follow up : have you guys ever toyed with the idea of transitioning into game making? Love what you do and thank you if you pick me, Rodrigo

Travis Manick

Hello Benn and Freinnds, (hold for response) Forspoken and Ant-man are, at WORST, fine experiences that are fun even if they don't move their respective genres forward or whatever. But any discourse about them is basically "this belongs in a dumpster or a fire or a dumpster that is on fire." What's up with that? Why are games and movies only allowed to be Masterpieces or Hot Garbage? Is the bar just so high nowadays, or are people too polarizing? Manick_T

I'm watching PsychOdyssey like every good nerd should. It feels like this entire project was engineered in a lab for Ben Hanson. What niche game or other piece of art or media feels like it was made just for you and why is that better than a horoscope?

Blake York

Jason Schreier recently shared on Triple Click that a source told him that the Metroid Prime Remaster has been done for a number of months and they were just sitting on it waiting for the right time to release. There are so many examples of when games are essentially sent out to die due to a bad release date. I wonder if for smaller/unexpected releases if shadowdropping during a gap in the release calendar as opposed to official announcement/normal marketing cycle could become more popular? Who knows how long Hi-Fi Rush was ready to go, but I feel like they picked an excellent time to release and got way more attention than if they followed the more traditional marketing cycle.

Hey MinnMax crew, When I was about 7 years old I was at the local Menards hardware store and had to use the restroom. I went into a stall and locked it, but as I was leaving I discovered that the lock was completely jammed. After trying for a minute to get the door open I noticed that there was about a foot of clearance between the floor and the bottom of the stall door. Thinking it was my only option at the time I laid on my back and slid across the disgusting bathroom floor to reach the other side. Once I escaped I saw there was a middle aged man who had been watching the whole thing. Nervously I pointed at the stall and said "lock got stuck". His face told me that he didn't seem convinced. He shook his head, muttered "Jesus Christ", and left the restroom. Do any of you have embarrassing stories in a public restroom?

Jason Wojnar

What's a fear or discomfort you genuinely got over in your life and how did you do it? I used to shun just about every public restroom until I was about 21 and learned that I shouldn't do that for the goodness of my health (and plus, public restrooms in Ukraine and the rest of Europe are waaaaaaaay cleaner than the ones in the US). I also got used to using squat toilets after about a week since it was the only option in a dorm I lived in for about a year.

Hello Minnmax Crew Many congrats to Haley for becoming the community manager for this wonderful community. I'm curious what you think are some of the GREAT communities i n video games? Personally i've loved being part of the Destiny community and always fealt very welcome there. All the best from Denmark Home of me and other things

Hi Ben and cohorts, The PSVR2 is out and the reviews are good, but the overall tone seems to be that this device doesn’t have the software to justify its $550 price tag. At the end of the day, not enough people seem hyped for it and it looks like it will be a write off for Sony. It got me thinking about what if Sony had poured this level of investment and engineering talent into a portable gaming device instead. The Steam Deck (and the continuing success of the Switch) demonstrates that there is a big market for handhelds. My question: What do you think a PS portable would look like in 2023? Do you think it would be a hit? Love the show! Maarten from Haarlem, the Netherlands

Tyler Sticka

On Mastodon, Anna Kipnis said that the PsychOdyssey documentary was receiving a lot less backlash than the Double Fine Adventure that accompanied Broken Age. Why do you think that is?

Phelix Diaz

When you started talking about PsychOdyssey, I wonder when were going to start getting movies based on the making of games. Around 5 days later the Tetris movie trailer comes out. What other movies based on game developers would be interesting and what type of genre would they be? For example seems like Kingdoms of Amalur would be a political/legal drama.

HydraTower

In the spirit of the upcoming “Pokémon Day”, what Pokémon game, mainline or spin-off, do you have the MOST memories of?

Henry Chandler

There are two types of control referred to as "tank controls" in video games: Type 1 - one-stick control, with up/down being forward/back, and left/right being turning (a la Resident Evil and original Metroid Prime) Type 2 - two-stick control, with both sticks up being forward, one stick up and one stick down turns left or right, etc Which one should be called tank controls? Type 1 is certainly more common in games, but Type 2 more accurately reflects a tank's treads. If one is called tank controls, what could we call the other one? Thanks!

Luca Alberti

Hey panel! Theathrhythm Final Bar line just came out and it feels like it did a bigger splash than expected (at least for me) : I drafted the game for my FantasyCritic as a last round draft and it ended up scoring an 87 on OC, one of the best reviewed games of the year so far! It also was very high in MinnMax's most played games for the past weekend. Did I miss something or is this series suddenly getting much bigger than it was?

Ben E

Now that PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale 2 got announced at the State of Play, which new characters are you looking forward to joining the roster?

gybones

Now that Kelsey isn’t on the podcast so it’s a level playing field: What’s the best pick up you’ve got through thrifting/garage sales/craigslist/etc.? I got a decent deal on a Vectrex that’s in pretty good condition

Aaron Terrell

What’s good y’all If you had to design a 5 game crash course for understanding your taste in video games, what would that course consist of? P.S. I have watched the best of MM 2022 and when Leo is playing fuser and says “I hope Atreus is ok” then starts dancing it kills me every time

Rikimaru

Hello MinnMax! What game has the best looking food? Similarly, what game(s) makes you the most hungry? (if it's a different answer)

Elias

Hey Ben and crew, A couple weeks ago on the show there was a discussion about bird calls. This reminded me that I saw a bird watching/photography game on Steam a while back. (It's called Birding Simulator and it's not been released yet) It seems like there has been a rise in the simulation game genre over the past few years, so my question is: What other everyday activities, hobbies, or jobs would you like to see turned into a simulation game?

Jeorin

Howdy MinnMax crew, I've been playing the Square-Enix farming sim/rpg Harvestella, and I encountered a character named Borogove, which is a reference to Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky poem. I have to imagine the number of players who would get that reference has to be quite small, like under 1%. Have you encountered a reference in a game that you got, but probably almost no one else did?

Hobbies or Sleep

Seeing as this week's prize is a game soundtrack, what game soundtracks are your favorites to listen to while working?

Colton Westbrooks

Hello! Is there a game that you find yourself thinking about/referencing that you genuinely never here other people talk about? For me it is probably D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die, yes the old Xbox One Swery game. It’s an incredibly silly thing, but one character says ‘avant-garde’ in an overly dramatic and ridiculous way. Ever since playing through it many years ago, my wife and I will always say avant-garde in that way whenever we hear that phrase in real life or other media. We are big ole dorks.

Erin T.

Yo MinnMax! Did you see the *email that Greg Miller tweeted out about 42 of 49 PSVR 2 launch window titles already being on or coming to the Quest 2 in the near future? What’s your take on this? Realistically, what could Sony do to make PS VR2 a must-buy for casual consumers at this point, given that the majority of its games will be on a cheaper, more convenient (albeit weaker) platform that people already own? *tweet for those who missed it: https://twitter.com/gameovergreggy/status/1628093974568402945?s=46&t=V8pExXQTBpkwhLnpcVzu4Q

Hey Ben and the crew! After hearing Ben talk about the double fine production of Psychoddysey I have got to say that it was freakin amazing. Having played only psychonauts 2 out of the catalog of double fine games I could not stop. Which leads me to ask, knowing that Ben loved the series do any other crew intend to watch it? And if you have do you think this is something any other game company would even think about doing? Getting a whole behind the scenes look is so interesting I'd love to see more companies do it, even if in my opinion it seems to regulate itself more for interesting for a smaller company. I think even if it's only a video or two something like this from a company like supergiant would be really awesome. Thanks for all the content -Kyle

Hello minn max. Well Shinji Mikami just announced he will be leaving Tango in the incoming months. No plans revealed what he will do next. But it looks like he will finally retire. If many know he well created and directed the first Resident Evil and Dino Crisis. Directed Vanquish, God Hand, and the Evil Within. Of course the game that many consider all time great Resident Evil 4(2005) was under his control. I hope for the best for him, and any games made a big impact on you guys. For me Vanquish was a game I needed at the time, in 2010 there were so many military shooters at that time and what it brought was so fresh and fun.

News has come out that Redfall will require a persistent online connection even if you just want to play Single Player. Why would Xbox/Bethesda/Arkane do this to us?

With the recent talk about writing books and Psychodyssey, it got me thinking if any of you have tips about promoting your own work? I wrote a screenplay over the pandemic, and am left with the question, "Now what?"
