I forgot I can’t press enter… rip. Anyway, I have a video gamey question for y’all. When you launch a new title for the first time, do you still have that little voice in the back of your head that wonders “could this be my favorite game of all time?” And if so, how long does that naive childlike wonder last until it is overcome by the crippling nihilism of adult hood and you realize you played your favorite game of all time when you were 11 or 12 years old and no modern release will ever overcome the glowing nostalgia of childhood experiences? Love the show! Thanks!

Howdy Minnxes! Which video game characters do you think are gamers? We’ve seen Nathan Drake play Crash Bandicoot, but does Samus Aran watch Twitch in her spare time? Does Dr Robotnik squad up with other baddies in Fortnite on the weekends? Does Sub Zero keep limber with a PSVR2? Who is most likely to be a real gamer?

Hello all, You know that scene at the beginning of Peter Pan when the father trips over Nana the dog, wipes out hard, and the family rushes over to the dog and says "Poor Nana..." ignoring the father? The other night during dinner, my daughter was talking using her hands and knocked my full glass of milk into my lap. My daughter looks at my wife and says, "Sorry, Mom..." Aghast, I say, "'Sorry, Mom?' POOR NANA!?" Have any of you ever had a "Poor Nana?" moment?

Hey gang, The Oscars have been moving away from giving Best Picture to blockbusters for a while now, with Return of the King in 2003 being the most recent, and despite Top Gun and Avatar nominations, this weekend looks to be no different. Compare this to the Game Awards which is the complete opposite, with nominations being mostly blockbusters and one or two Indies. My question is, do you see this ever changing and there being a shift to more, let's say, artsy games winning the big prizes rather than general crowdpleasers in a similar way that film awards are now? Thanks for the laughs!

The recent PC release of Sons of the Forest has me thinking about survival games. Why do you think this genre has been so much more successful on PC than on consoles? Do you think that will always be the case?

Jake Z

Have you tried the Humanity demo? The trailers didn't do anything for me, but after playing it I'm now sold on the game.

Scott Castro

Hey Ben and Friends! The Tony Hawk Project 8 demo introduced me to one of my favorite bands, The Hold Steady. Has a video game ever introduced you to an artist you love?

'Take a seat' - Chris Hansen, the host at Chili's

Hey MinnMax, This game is called "J.K. Simmons or jk?" I'll give you a game and you have to say whether Mr Simmons performed in it or jk (just kidding) he wasn't in it. Bonus points if you know the character. Portal 2 - Yes, Cave Johnson Spiderman 2 on PS2 - just kidding, he was only in the psp version Mass Effect Andromeda - just kidding Lego Dimensions - Yes, Cave Johnson Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 - Yes, The President M&Ms The Lost Formulas - Yes, the Yellow M&M Gravity Falls: Legend of the Gnome Gemulets - just kidding The legend of Korra - Yes, Tenzin Whiplash: The Official Game of the Movie on Nintendo DS - just kidding, not a real game but what a banger rhythm game that would make

I've been playing Subnautica for the past month and the game has enraptured me in such a way, that I have develop some moderate thalassophobia (fear of vast bodies of water). Have you ever developed specific fears due to a game? Phelix from Puerto Rico.

Do ya’ll like road trips? Wanna do a 2 week Route 66 road trip, but all my friends seem to think 2 weeks on the road is torture. Maybe a MinnMax Route 66 vlog Patreon goal so I can just watch ya’ll instead….

BearAntlers

Do you associate any video games with feeling physically ill? In my youth, I rented Quest 64 and settled in for a day of unfettered gaming. When lunch rolled around, I found a bowl of leftover black beans in the fridge and made myself I giant burrito which I was soon throwing back up into the toilet. Now, even thinking about Quest 64 makes me nauseated.

Sebastian Apolinario

With the popularity of the "The Last of Us" HBO show, do you think it could suffer the "Game of Thrones" effect? What I mean is that GoT wasn't fully written when they reached the last season and we all know how that went. With a second season of TLOU already announced, if it is as successful as the first one, do you the GoT history could repeat?

Mason Cowell

Howdy all! What is the worst pop up message to get in game? For example, nothing is worse to me than "you don't have room got that item" or "you're over- encumbered". What about you all?

Kevin Kennedy

Hi MinnMax! With the jump in console generations getting smaller and smaller, and VR being slow to take off, what do you think the next major step forward for video games will be? That “holy smokes this is gonna change everything” moment like going from 2D 16-bit to 3D 64-bit?

Jerry Young

Hi minnmax: After all the “nobody cares about horizon” shade being thrown by Ben and Kyle last week, thought it was time to bring some facts to the table. And for the record, jeffm is right, horizon over breath of the wild every day. Zero dawn: as of February of last year, ZD had joined uncharted 4, god of war 2018, and last of us surpassing 20 million copies sold. It also has more than 1 billion hours played. It was the most successful launch on the PlayStation 4 since uncharted 4. In regards to reception Game Informer's Reader's Choice Best of 2017 Awards, saw it win “Best Sony Game", and finish second place for both "Best Action Game" and "Game of the Year". Forbidden west: According to the npd group forbidden was was the 9th best selling game of 2022 it was the 4th best physical game seller in the uk. Estimates put total sales at roughly 10 million. It was nominated for 7 categories at the game awards and 8 for the dice awards. Not saying it’s perfect, not saying it’s the best of all time, but put some respect on guerrila and horizon name. Jerry.

Hey guys, I’m seeing Zelda ads on YouTube now and I realized something: I don’t need to see these, nor do I want to—I’m already invested, and I almost don’t want to see anything else so I’ll be surprised when the game comes out. What’s your “I’ve seen enough to decide I want this game” point? Are there any series like Zelda or Metroid where you would potentially buy it on its title alone?

Leif Dion

Does any body ever use fry sauce in minnmax? I'm from Idaho and it's basically the sauce to use for fries\dunkable foods here? If you haven't used fry sauce before what's your guys favorite dipping sauce?

Reuben Madden

Hi all, Recently started Psych Odyssey (thanks for the recommendation Ben!) and have been thinking about the first episode where DoubleFine employees' passion for their work led them to severe crunch when working on the first game. It seems that in any coveted job position, it is inevitable for passion to be exploited into overworking in order to stay competitive. Games journalism is another highly coveted industry; has anyone on the panel experienced overworking as a result of their passion for the job? Is there a way to keep your place in these coveted jobs without overworking?

Kyle Lemmon

Hey, MinnMax crew. I’m taking a trip to Cancun at the end of March with my family. What Nintendo Switch games should I bring for the plane ride? Note - My daughters are 7 and 11.

Vincent L.

Hi y’all, My daughter recently turned 4, so I thought it’d be a good time to introduce her to some classic kid friendly gaming franchises, like Pokèmon and Animal Crossing. It took less than a minute to learn that those games are absolutely awful for the illiterate. My daughter has had a blast with “artsy” games, like Monument Valley and Journey, but gets frustrated with text heavy, non-voiced over games from Nintendo. Can you think of any other sneaky good console or PC games that don’t require much reading and don’t center around violence (sorry Elden Ring)? Thanks, Vince.

It seems like whenever a game is referred to as a "Souls-like", the aspect being compared to Souls games is always the combat or difficulty. I would like to see more "Souls-likes" that emulate other aspects of FromSoft's games, such as exploratory level design with hidden paths and shortcuts, semi-open game structure, storytelling through item descriptions and conversations with NPCs, punishing the player for not observing small details, and crafting the architecture of the world so that it all elegantly fits together in a way that makes sense yet surprises you. Am I in the minority for thinking there's a lot more to the FromSoft secret sauce than a good combat system?

Duderado

Greetings travelers, What's your favorite inanimate object turned companion in a video game? There are classic ones like the boat King of Red Lions from Wind Walker and book Weiss from Nier, to more recent examples like the Bracelet from Forespoken and the guns from High On Life. My favorite example is the quip-spewing sword Lilarcor you rescue from a sewer in Baldur's Gate 2.

Rich McLaughlin

I’ll be traveling to Tokyo soon, any recommendations for cool video gamey things to do?

Seth Filbin

Hello friends! Do you ever feel embarrassed by your love of video games? Even though you work in the industry, do you still the feel the urge to hide your fandom because of what the 'normies' may or may not think? Even though gaming is an important hobby of mine, I still find myself downplaying my love of games not only with family and friends, but strangers as well. Am I alone in this? Love you all! P.S. Ben, how did it feel being called a 'dog with a stick in its mouth, trying to go through a door' on the last Fire Escape Pod? Those guys are so mean :)

Garrett Wainstock

What about VR with no wires, but it's an anal suppository?

Mcdoeswell

Which indie title deserves it’s own TV/film adaptation?

Luca Alberti

Hey MinnMax crew! Why doesn't Disney do a Toy Story Remake instead of beating a dead horse with 5? I think Toy Story 1 while being a hallmark of animation has aged quite a bit and doing a Remake would be much more appreciated by fans to preserve its essence.

Cath

Hey everyone. I restarted my island on animal crossing new horizon and the minnmax council had been super supportive. What surprised me is the number of people unable to delete and restart over! Would you be able to do so? If yes, wanna join the reset-island-club 😂!

Michael Berry

Hey Minnmax! Recently, I found the original packaging material for my PS Vita. In this box, I found a bunch of AR cards and I quickly remembered that the Vita and 3DS had augmented reality functionality. Neither system ever utilized this outside a few tech demoey games. I have trouble thinking of any other console or handheld that had such an under used feature. However, I do think the tech is cool idea. Do you think augmented reality will ever be incorporated into full fledged games or will it only be assigned to interesting tech demos?

bizkiut (Nick S.)

Hey CLCs, What's your favorite food when you are sick? And does it change depending on the type of sick that you are? For me if I have a fever and cough my favorite is chili or mashed potatoes. Hope everyone is feeling well this week!

Victor Garcia

Hi everyone. Are there any foods that you hated but then started to like as you got older? When I was a kid, I hated onions, but then started liking them as a teenager. Up until the past few months, I used to hate bellpeppers but now I'm starting to like those, as long as their cooked and not just raw. Tomatoes still suck, though. I don't think I'll ever start to like them on their own and not as part of something else like pasta sauce.

BearCommando

Hey MinnMax, Grass, Snow, and Sand. This is the triforce of video game ground textures, and has maintained its proliferation since the NES days. Do you ever get tired of it? I personally have come to expect all 3 to make an appearance in any given game and get a little upset when it doesn’t. All you have to do to make a world map feel fresh is change one texture file to “white” and suddenly the world feels bigger and more diverse. Sure, we all kinda dislike the sand one, but it makes us appreciate the rest of the biomes more and thus still improves the overall game experience.

Hey guys, This is sort of a betterquest goal I’ve been quietly working on for a while. Since handling in my master’s dissertation in Archaeology last June, I’ve worked hard on writing and re-writing a good research proposal which might get me a PhD position at a good University. I finally went out of my comfort zone, reaching out to complete strangers, big names in the field and so on, and sent them my work to gauge interest and ask for feedback. Long story short, I’ve just received and offer for a PhD position at Oxford University and I am elated! It feels like a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders (though I’m sure that’ll return once I start working on it haha..). Anyways, I just wanted to say thank you for being the very best of gaming-related podcasts out there, you’re always consistent and I love the general positive mood. Been an avid listener since the GI podcast around 2015-2016, and since day one of MinnMax, also figured it was time I subscribed to the Patreon after so many years. Warms regards from Norway<3

Sam Kennedy

Hey y’all, What do you think would happen to society if suddenly everybody no longer had to or could sleep?

Hello minnmax crew. So with all the discussion of people NOT returning to play dlc for their favorite games. I have stats to share and hope the crew can guess correctly on the percentage of people beating dlc. These are from all Xbox games achievements lists on the console. 360 versions of some games including. I pull the achievement % of just finishing a dlc. The Dredge demo on Switch is fascinating. It's one of the coolest fishing games I've played. I had no clue what the game was going to be like but now thanks to the demo I will definitely buy it. Demos are extremely useful to me. So my question is why have demos become increasingly rare? Am I part of a dying breed of demo players or do you all like them as well?

Patrick Hughes

What up good MinnMax and crew! And merry belated Switchmas as such turned six years old a few days ago! Two questions: If you have your Switch nearby, what was your most played Switch title according to hours played? And dreaming ahead of a Switch 2, what title would you most like to see debut on such considering it's not going to be Tears of the Kingdom at this point? As much as I love Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as a pseudo ultimate Mario Kart collection, I'd personally love a new entry that takes the series in a new direction like an open world Mushroom Kingdom ala Forza Horizon with Diddy Kong Racing adventure mode elements.

TheLastArcher

Hey crew! What are your go to games for staying awake? I am a Dad of two girls that works full time and just hit my 30s. That being said, I get rather sleepy in the evenings when my wife and I want to game. It’s to the point now I have to pick what game I play based on its ability to keep me awake. What are your go-to games for keeping the Sandman at bay?

Alex Britt

Hey all! I've noticed some of the Minnmax crew interacting with former Cracked.com staff on Twitter sometimes, and that's super neat! I've been a huge fan of the Cracked.com dispora and follow a lot of their new ventures post Cracked. Bridging the two worlds, I really enjoy the 1upsmanship by Michael Swain and Adam Ganser and like their art lense approach to games. Sooo, my question is, what's your favorite Cracked content you follow? Thanks!

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and Friennds, What's some real world knowledge you have that breaks your immersion in video games? For instance if two train cars become decoupled while moving the train would stop due to loss in brake continuity throughout the consist. However, games and movies love to use disconnecting trains willy nilly for story purposes.

Trapezoid

Hey Guys! I asked a question last week, and you all didn’t answer it on the show (which is fine, of course!) My question this week is what is the etiquette for asking questions? If a question doesn’t get answered one week, is it cool to ask the same question again another week? Or should your question not getting answered be an indication that it wasn’t that good/interesting a question in the first place? Thanks!

Vilis

Demos were mentioned as a topic for this week, and I want to ask the panel: How many of you ever had a disc, or set of discs, full of ShareWare games? I remember having one with Epic Pinball, and there was a bullet he'll game called Tyrian, and there was a game called Jill of the Jungle, and just.... so many games to try and never buy a real why. WAIT!! Y'all need to do Cream of the Steam (Congrats on official name change btw) but with a 90's Shareware disc!

TommenDotGif

Hi gang How much would gamepass have to cost for it to not be the best value in gaming for you? A couple years ago I might have said $25 a month or even higher, but with ps plus having a relatively similar library, I'm not sure anymore

Joe Dean

I just finished a weekend at a film festival, and wanted to know if any of you had taken part in any before? Any memorable experiences, or favorite films you seen at a film festival?

D M

Regarding demos - 1. You could play the entirety of Crash Bash from inside the demo by entering a cheat code on both versions of the demo, 2. Yakuza 6 demo was accidentally the whole game I believe? 3. DIno Crisis 2 had a special 45 minute demo, but using a gameshark you could freeze the timer to play the whole game my favorite demos: MGS2, Skate, UT2k4, Dark Messiah, Halo. I also have a soft spot for Terminator 3: war of the machines as it was the full game that you could play for 2 hours and kept track of your time via registry settings.

Spencer

Hi everyone. I have noticed over the course of decades playing games that after finishing almost any game, I need to take a sharp left turn in terms of genre/style for the next game I play. After a Resident Evil, I need a Pikmin. It helps me feel refreshed and continually excited about playing games. The first game I finished after The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. There is no one type of game I would call a "palette cleanser" for me, but old school side-scrollers like Mario, Mega Man, and Castlevania seem to be the only exceptions, since I can often play a few back-to-back. Everything else needs to be adjacent to something radically different. Are any of you like this or does playing one type of game inspire you to immediately play more like it? (Or has being in the industry trained you to mentally reset for whatever is coming out that week out of necessity?)

Zatch Moore

Hey gang! Question for Kyle and Jeff. As the father of a two year old who struggles to find time and energy to game, what is some of the best advice you have for a dad who still wants to game?

Stevelution

Hey pals, I recently finished up my replay of Minish Cap after the release of the GBA collection on the Nintendo Switch online service. Have you replayed any classic games recently and did that replay cause your thoughts on the game to change?

Innocuoususer

I finally started Atomic Heart, and, if anything, Kyle and Janet underplayed just how awful the protagonist's dialogue is. I almost quit withing the first hour, as I wasn't sure I could listen to him for 8-10 more hours. Is there a game you have quit or wanted to quit solely because the protagonist was so annoying? Conversely, can you think of a terrible game saved by the likeability of the protagonist?
