What's the difference between cabinets and cupboards?

Victor Pham

Should we stop using the "delayed game is eventually good" quote attributed to Miyamoto? How much of that statement is true in practice?

Sam Kennedy

I think we can all agree that Miyamoto is a very important part of Nintendo. So how can we make sure that he never leaves? Put his head in a jar like Futurama? Train CharGPT to write like Miyamoto forever? What horrifying dystopian future do you see?

lcs

How many plushies is too many plushies for one person to own?

Sonny Johnson

First off, love the show and all you guys! With the recent cinematic flops in the superhero movie industry (Ant-Man, Shazam, etc.), people are starting to say that we are dealing with superhero movie fatigue. What are your thoughts on this situation, are you tired of superhero movies or have the recent ones just left a bad taste in your mouth? My opinion is that superhero movies nowadays have flimsy plots and focus way too much on big action sequences (or lack thereof 😬) and quick cheap laughs. The last superhero movie I enjoyed watching was “The Batman”. Thanks again for all you guys do!

Jordan Blayney

This weekend is Star Wars Celebration in Europe. There will most likely be more information about Star Wars Jedi Survivor but what other announcement be it movies, TV, or video games would make you guys excited?

Stephen Woodson

The way I had to Google if Miyamato-san passed away when I saw this podcast topic. Be careful with our hearts! 😅 Do you think that Nintendo employees revere Miyamoto the way the rest of the gaming world does? I always think back to Aonuma's struggle with Majora's Mask, and how a lot of the terror in that game supposedly came from his relationship with Miyamoto as a superior.

In honor of Easter coming up, what's the most famous Easter Egg in a video game? Also what's your favorite?

Phelix Diaz

I recently played Brothers: A Tale of 2 Sons. I'll keep away from spoilers, but will mention broadly gameplay mechanics. I was so impressed of how the emotional scenes towards the end are so amplified by the use of the controller and making those scenes actual gameplay. Nowadays most emotional moments in games happen in cutscenes. Do you feel more emotionally connected when scenes like this happen in gameplay?

I've published a number of cocktail books, and one of my favorite things to do is slip little references to things I like into the names or descriptions of cocktails. If you had to create a cocktail based on a game you love, what would you call it and what would be in it?

RickyWinterborn

i went to super nintendo land at universal with some early 20's people and they had kind of a meh reaction to it all. one of them said mario used to be cooler and now it's too popular and played out. has mario been ruined by capitalism?

Funky Duck

Hey MinnMax, What's a big, fun, and *non-video game* related purchase that you're currently thinking about making? For recreational purchases, are you the type of person to mull it over for a long time and stress the details, or do you just go for it? I just bought a new guitar after looking for weeks and it feels great to have reinvested in a hobby that I fell out of a few years ago. (Better Quest goal: play guitar more often!)

Hey Ben and friends, do you remember which year are these post apocalyptic games set in? Below are 8 games set in post apocalypse (more or less). Can you sort them in ascending order with regards to the year they are set in? - Dying Light 2 - Fallout 4 - Horizon Zero Dawn - The Last of Us - The Last of Us Part II - Metro Exodus - Nier: Automata - The Walking Dead: Season One Additional info: 1. Some games have openings or segments set in a different year, please do not take those into account; this list concerns only the main game year 2. The Last of Us HBO show's timeline is different than the game so be careful *** SPOILERS: BELOW IS THE ORDERED LIST *** The Walking Dead: Season One - 2003 The Last of Us - from 2033 to 2034 Metro Exodus - 2035 Dying Light 2 - 2036 The Last of Us Part II - from 2038 to 2039 Fallout 4 - 2287 (starts on October 23, 2077) Horizon Zero Dawn - 3040 (the game starts in 3021) Nier: Automata - 11945 Also, a fun piece of trivia: Far Cry New Dawn which released the same day as Metro Exodus (15 February 2019) is also set in 2035

ahoy me 'horts! what piece of failed technology or product were you an early adopter of? mini discs? Google Glass? 3D television? for me, it's Virtual Boy and the Steam Controller (an incredible controller and i will die a thousand deaths on this hill defending it) ps - Kelsey can have my Virtual Boy if she wants it

Can we bury "the quote" or are we doomed to have a bunch of very clever people race to the top of every delay announcement comment section to tell us they anticipate the quote in a condescending way? (and yes my comment is the same as those but even more clever)

Brennan C Ayers

Are any of you “performance queens” when it comes to gaming? In my old age I find visuals and performance to be the #1 factor for ruining a game. When the ToTK trailer came out, my thoughts were “looks fun, also looks terrible visually & I don’t know I’m interested”. Every new feature was tagged with - why is this on switch? - in my mind. Any advice for overcoming? -PC/PS5 spoiled baby

Hey there Minimus Maxers, What’s the worst hiding place in video games?

Jordan Seefeldt

Hey MinnMaxers, I finally bought a Switch last fall and picked up Breath of the Wild. Given that I'm so far into the Switch's life, I have an awesome library of games to catch up on and I've recently also gotten Metroid Dread, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and Hades. Have you ever had a time where you feel you've benefitted by getting a console later in its life cycle, whether due to the library of games, technical improvements, or any other reason?

Stark

Does the cancellation of E3 have any effect on the ESA’s ability to lobby on behalf of the games industry? Is the funding from E3 necessary for the ESA to continue operating in its current manner?

Reuben Madden

What's the panels thoughts on soup? I recently got into a heated argument with friends who said that soup didn't count as a meal, as it always left them dissatisfied. I couldn't believe this, aa I would say certain soups (especially pumpkin soup) is one of my favourite meals! Where do you weigh in on the great soup debate?

SlyCut

If you had to choose one live service game to play regularly (at least ten hours per week) for the rest of your life, what would it be? This does not mean you can't play other games, or even other live service games. You just can't stop playing this one. This also assumes that your game of choice would be supported indefinitely. My choice would be Smite (third-person MOBA).

Mike Lynch

When you are sent game codes for review, are those added toward the game's sales? If not, do you ever buy a copy of a game afterward because you enjoyed it so much?

Kevin Kennedy

How do you tie your shoes? Bunny ears, or loop swoop and pull? My theory is most kids learn via bunny ears, but then switch to loop swoop as it’s more efficient. When does that transition happen?

Michael Berry

If size and space were not a concern what over the top item would you add to your gaming collections? Personally, I would love a Lucky and Wild arcade cabinet from Namco.

Seabass

Are video games books now?? Playing Pentiment and Storyteller simultaneously, I feel like I'm being tricked into reading. Are book-based games going to be the next big thing? HELP

Andrew Molnar

This is a question for Ben and (mostly) Kelsey. My wife is starting a small business with two other women. As small business owners yourselves, what is one piece of advice you would offer her? Thanks!

Mitch

Howdy - with the reviews of the Super Mario Movie on Rotten Tomatoes landing in the mediocre range, that means that there are still only 5 movie based on a video game with a “Certified Fresh” Rotten Tomatoes score. Can anyone on the panel name what those movies are? A: Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2, Detective Pikachu, The Angry Birds Movie 2, and Werewolves Within (which is the best video game movie of all time with an 86% fresh score)

Zach Gileau

Does anyone else feel like they enjoy gaming *more* now than during their childhood? My attention span is much better than when I was a kid so I feel like I get more out of games now. As I've gotten older, I've opened myself up to so many different kinds of experiences than I would have ever given a chance as a kid. Not to mention the sheer amount of games accessible to us through digital means, as opposed to being able to afford a few games a year at most as a kid, including many of the classics! Do we look back on our childhoods with rose tinted glasses and downplay the experiences we have in the present? Also, shoutout to Kelsey for getting Xenoblade 3 on the two tens last year. I just finished it (after putting 125 hours into it, haven't even gotten to the post game content yet) this past week and it has become one of my favorite games of all time. It absolutely deserves to be up there with the likes of Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok.

Bill Jones

Howdy MinnMax, I'd like to get the panel's thoughts on sabbaticals, whether you would ever want to take one, and what you would do if you could step away from your current responsibilities for a month or two and then get back at it?

David A

Hello, everyone! This is a question for everyone, do you have an internal monologue (aka the voice in your head)?

Spencer

E3 Kings FUNeral; too soon?

DarkFishDays

Why do you think most game difficulties are listed easiest at top and hardest at bottom? Wouldn’t it make more sense to have the hardest level at top since you are increasing the challenge? Thank you for indulging a silly question.

Rikimaru

Yo MinnMax! Quick question for each of you, a would you rather, if you will: A Mario game in a medieval fantasy setting OR a Resident Evil game in space?

Vilis

I once heard that Miyamoto initially envisioned Legend of Zelda without weapons and just be about exploring, and the vestigial aspect of that is starting without a weapon. I wonder if he has seen or played Tchia and gotten to experience some of that notion since I was able to accidentally hop on an enemy plane and fly to one of their bases and, basically, not be attacked or anything. It was a wild experience, but pleasant. Basically, I want to hear Miyamoto's thoughts on Tchia.

thejjuan1

Hello minnmax crew, this question mostly for Ben. From a 1-10 how scared you were, when you were getting a call from Greg Miller in the middle of the day.

CANAS1AN

hey minnmaxers! i dont rly have a question but wanted to share that I passed my teaching exam on Tuesday after 5 long hours of advanced math! been listening to the show since day 1 and listening during study breaks was a great way to unwind. love the content, keep it up!

Pete Deaver

Hi MinnMax crew and company, I was listening to the show last week about Tears of the Kingdom and all of the fun new systems the dev team is including. But it got me thinking: with the same graphics/art style, the same (but expanded) map, and enhanced gameplay mechanics — will Tears of the Kingdom make BOTW obsolete? What reason aside from story will players have to return to BOTW in the future, rather than ToTK? Are there any other game sequels that are so close to the original, but better mechanics-wise, that have eclipsed their predecessor in this way?

CrabPalace

Please improve the titles to these games: - Various Daylife - Triangle Strategy - Frogger: Helmet Chaos Now for some harder ones: - Donkey Kong - Pacman - Guitar Hero

I'm catching up on the demo episode of the podcast I somehow missed and it had me wondering: do we have any data on the success of Demos leading towards a purchase? To the cohorts, has your purchase hit rate on demos been a net positive or net negative? I'm sure nowadays they use analytics on what you do and I'm so nervous I'm going to send the wrong message if I don't buy and Square is gonna shut down the demo factory!

Cory S

What elements of marketing most strongly draw you towards a new indie game (and new developer)? Is it an impressive trailer, a clever elevator pitch, a fabulous show booth, free t-shirt, themed baked goods? I plan to finish the development of my first game this year (3 years in the making), so I'm starting to strategize the release and would appreciate your insights!

GreenMountainState

The other night I was having some macaroni pasta and found myself scooping the noodles with my fork rather than stabbing. I thought, this is stupid, why don't I just use a spoon. This got me thinking of other meals that could go either way, so I've come up with a list of meals and the question is: Fork or Spoon? - Mac and cheese - Chili - Ice cream cake - Peas - Mash potatoes - Rice Cheers!

Cherrymorph

Hey Ben and Crew. What game do you think you think about the most? Thanks! - Cherrystemic

gybones

Do y’all like keychains? Have some fun ones on your keys?

David Johnson

I've been having a lot of fun lately with a silly free to play game that I saw my 4 year old playing on his fire tablet. It's clearly meant for children and I've been sweeping multiplayer matches for the most part. What was the last game you guys got into that you definitely weren't the target demo for?

Christian F.

Hi gang! When podcasts feature one-time guests, do they get paid? Marketing opportunities and press tours aside, it seems like recording a podcast is a not insignificant time commitment, especially for longer form content. I've always wondered how those agreements work, and if they're different is the guest is a more notable/famous person or a celeb? Keep up the great work!

Keegan

With E3 gone, there is a new vacuum for a major video game convention. If PAX came from a webcomic, I think a podcast should also be able to make a convention. I propose: “MinnMax presents: the Exciting Electronic Entertainment Event,” or, E4. (If you want to get into television, I also have a proposal I’m willing to discuss with you that I call “G5.”)

BlakJak

Alright I've locked in my BetterQuest goal for April. I'm going to write at least 100 words every other day. Any tips on journaling or reaching writing goals? P.S. join the book club on the minnmax discord!

Hi all! I recently moved out of my parents’ house and now have considerably less money to spend on games. My PS4 overheated last year, so the only two devices I own that can play games are a Switch and an iPad. As much as I’d love to upgrade to current-gen for games like RE4, it’s hard to justify when the original game is $10 on the eShop and I’d never played it before. Between the abundance of ports and quality indies on Switch and a decent catalog on the App Store (just Vampire Survivors), I’ve found no shortage of great games to play despite being down my main console. Less of a question, more of a reminder to folks that while gaming can be an expensive hobby, it doesn’t have to be. You still have access to so many great games on slightly older hardware! You don’t have to break the bank to experience great games and be a part of the conversation. Peace n love, Drew (she/her)

Hey Minnmaxers, it's Pinguini here. I love Miyamoto's games and admire his creativity and approach to game development, but I can't help feeling a little intimidated by these established authors. Perhaps I'm being influenced by recent discussions on authorhip and how it can lead to creating toxic work environments, but I often imagine how stressful it must be for developers to work under such highly acclaimed figures. I work in a Japanese company in Tokyo, and I've experienced firsthand how tough it is to challenge leadership. The fact that the Japanese game industry is still shrouded in mystery is not helping to ease my fears. Also, I feel there's a tendency in media to trivialize and deminish problematic behavior, especially with non western developers due to the language and cultural barriers. Maybe off topic but Masahiro Sakurai is always praised for his passion and strong dedication to projects or Hayao Mizazaki is often depicted as a smiling cute old man drawing in his studio. Have you guys ever seen a gibli documentary?! That guy seems like scariest and most intimidating person to work with!

Steve Bellegarde

New games have loading screens that ask you to confirm with either the X or the A button before actually continuing. Do you like this? I often find myself checking my phone and forgetting to look back up.

Duderado

Hey y'all, With Resident Evil 4 on the brain I have to ask - what's your favorite cult in a game? Mine is the Cult of the Eyeless from Baldur's Gate 2, a cult whose members plucks out their eyes in worship of a Beholder (a floating eyeball monster) who promises them the ability to see the truth.

Joe Dean

In Zone of the Enders what is an Ender, and what is their zone?

Kyle Silva

What is the percentage of Monopoly games that are played with all the rules being followed accurately? Similarly, what’s the percentage of Monopoly games that don’t end with anyone quitting?

Tokyo Game Life

Hi MinnMax, We’ve all heard of Excitebike, but I feel people forget that Miyamoto was the director, producer, and designer of the game. Excitebike is one of my favorite NES titles and the engine was used for Super Mario Bros making it surprisingly important in the grand scheme of things. There’s even a Mario version of the game for Satellaview. I’d love to hear about your Excitebike thoughts and memories.

Patrick Hughes

Ahoy good folks of MinnMax. Miyamoto is synonymous with Nintendo, but imagine a scenario where Miyamoto knocks on the doors of Microsoft and Sony studios, does his enthusiastic smile and wave, and declares he is to direct one of each of their games where all his opinions and decisions are law. What game does each studio give Miyamoto to direct? And what does the end product of the game look like?

Alex Britt

Hey MinnMax - what's something from high school that you learned that lives rent free in your brain? Bonus points if it's never relevant to your day to day. Thanks! ALEX

James Gameboy

Recalling last week's discussion of the "brand drawer": I work at a liquor store, and I too have an equivalent brand drawer with various logos of distilleries and products. It's nice to have a wide variety to choose from for the daily grind. I am glad the brand drawer concept spans many industries. Cheers

Trapezoid

I recently logged into my Switch for the first time in a long while and was promptly told that my username (Trapezoid) was not allowed anymore and I had to change it. I was quite annoyed as I’ve been using this name online since about 1997 or so. I get that there is technically a bad word in there, but I mean . . . Come on, man, it’s a shape! In honor of this annoyance, I’ve created a game I like to call “Is It Allowed?” The premise is simple, I put a bunch of names into my Switch, some of which were allowed, and some of which were not. YOU DECIDE WHICH IS WHICH! 1. Titmouse (Allowed) 2. Poppycock (Allowed) 3. Pussycat (Not Allowed) 4. Homosapien (Not Allowed) 5. Who’re you (Not Allowed)

KratosRager

My friend and started playing Diablo III on PC together and it has me wondering what first hour of a video game you’ve played the most? For me, it’s probably Diablo III or Borderlands 2 with all the different characters I’ve made over the years and all the different platforms I’ve played on.

Brady Griffith

What games did you try long after their release date and find that they were extremely your jam? Why did you put it off? I never played the original Dead Space because I thought it'd be too scary, but I wanted to finally try it to compare to the remake, and I LOVED it. Flew through it a few days (and of course then listened to the Deepest Dive).

The Diddler

Avengers had its final update. Looking back on the game, do you think the game was as bad as people made it out to be? I booted the game up to see how it was, and the combat is still really good. Yes, the level design is horrible because it’s a live service, and the enemies are lame, but the actual combat is fantastic. The story mode is also, pretty good. I think the media just couldn’t help but to focus on the live service aspect and Spider-Man being exclusive. Looking at the live service games that came after Avengers, I think it’s safe to say Avengers is better than what came after.

CaffeineDad

Good news bad news: the good news is my wife and I are about to close on our first house! The bad news is I have a large plastic bin of old game cases and I don't want to lug them around with me! The discs are safe in a disc binder, but what do I do with these cases? What do you all do with old game cases? If I recycle them, am I a bad gamer?! Help!

BearCommando

Do you think Miyamoto’s classic characters are iconic because of their character design, or simply because of the game design of the games they were featured in?

CptCobblePot

With Chris and a Kelsey on the show I want to hear their thoughts on game preservation. When do you think it’s time for a remake? Developers are seeing the success of remakes, especially with the revitalization of some early 2000s titles. However, games like the Cowabunga collection, the various Castlevania collections etc. have got me wondering. Does this seem like one of the better ways to start preserving older game titles for both developers and the gaming community?

Mike R.

Hi Ben, loved the E3 memories revisit posting on YT! Q: Have you considered hiring a part-time marketing person, you need one asap, seriously you guys are doing an awesome job!
