After listening to the Mario Movie Max spoilers, I'm going to need more Janet movie takes

This is more of a challenge than a game. I went to Metacritic and looked up the highest rated games of all time by user score (https://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/score/userscore/all/all/filtered?sort=desc). I would be shocked if you could guess more than one game from this list. Sorting by critic score gives you a much more predictable list, of course. Here's the list, for whomever is judging: 1. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (DS) 2. ZHP Unlosing Ranger vs Darkdeath Evilman (PS2) 3. Resident Evil (GameCube) 4. Superliminal (Xbox One) 5. Superliminal (Switch) 6. Crystar (PS4) 7. Tengami (Wii U) 8. Vanquish (Xbox 360) 9. Metal Torrent (DS) 10. Resident Evil 3 (PS1) 11 (in case Superliminal appearing twice doesn't count). Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water (Switch)

What are some relatively lesser known indie games from recent years that you wish more people had played? I recently got A Short Hike on steam deck and have had a blast playing it.

Chandler

What tv gameshow would you do the best on

Cath

What is your favorite plot twist:mind blown video game moment. For me It is a tie with the revelation of the reaper invasion in Mass Effect 2 and what is Horizon Zero Dawn purpose.

Victor Pham

Do all games need to have a pause function while playing offline, including during cutscenes? Real life can sometimes get in the way of gaming and it should be a painless process to just pause the game and do your thing without worrying about missing anything or losing progress.

Thom Blackburn

Hey MinnMaxinistas, Getting the steamdeck has made me realize how important backwards compatibility is to me. How great is it turning on a new console that already has a full library of things to play? What do you most value in a console? Thanks, Thom Blackburn

Brian Lyness

Hey Ben & Crew, Half Life 2 is one of my favourite games of all time, it really felt groundbreaking for it's time. My question is what the hell happened to those devs? The amount of talent in that team was staggering. Did Valve put them all to work on the Steam OS, make them servants at Gabe Newell's mansion?? Are there any developers who made a game you adored then seemingly heard nothing from for years (or ever)?

hardIIfind

When talking to yourself in your head, do you have any kind of speech issues? I, for example, struggle with w and r words in my head but not aloud.

Stark

Have you noticed how Star Wars Jedi Survivor turned up the sexy meter on Cal Kestis? Even the keyart makes him look like an Instagram model. AAA game protagonists are usually conventionally attractive but it seems like there was a concerted effort to increase the character’s sex appeal. I find this fascinating.

Phelix Diaz

Hello Crew: I recently been thinking of moving out of Colorado. There's not a strong gaming community here, in the sense of events and such. Which would you say are the best cities for gamers? Aside from the obvious ones like Seattle, LA and San Francisco. Thanks.

After graduating in the midst of the pandemic and kicking off my post-college career in an enitely remote setting, I oftentime find it hard to initiate conversations with random people. That being said, I do realize that sometimes the smallest beginnings can bloom into beautiful, life-long relationships. So, my question is this: what are some simple ways that you have connected with people that ended up turning into something more substantial as time progressed?

Vilis

Tchia is lovely and chill, everyone needs to do the Dolphin race. HOWEVER I am wildly curious why y'all are talking about Bloodhunt all of a sudden? I played it a little bit months ago and, they did a good job of incorporating the lore, and the gameplay was fine, but what is happening with it that is news worthy?

Styster

What's the best food to eat at a restaurant? What foods just can't hold up to being takeout/delivery?

Jared Piers

With this pet documentary (hopefully) coming up, I wanted to ask a big pet question. Do you call your pets your children? Or are you a normal person?

lcs

What are the origins of y'all's handles? What is a yozetty? What is the etymology of gameonysus? (And why did I mishear it as "game on, sis" for a good couple months💀)

WeGoGiant

Needle drop. Let's say you can add a licensed song to any video game that doesn't already have licensed music. What song do you add to what game and where would you place it? Would you add Freebird to a Metal Gear game? Tubthumping to Punch Out? The sky is the limit.

SlyCut

If you had to choose one live service game to play regularly (at least ten hours per week) for the rest of your life, what would it be? This does not mean you can't play other games, or even other live service games. You just can't stop playing this one. This also assumes that your game of choice would be supported indefinitely. My choice would be Smite (third-person MOBA).

Hey MinnMaxers, what's your opinion on CGP Grey's most recent YouTube video where he claims Minnesota has the worst state flag? Do you agree and want to see it changed like Utah recently did or do you like it the way it is? What do you think of his suggestion to create a Scandinavian-inspired flag for your state? https://youtu.be/l4w6808wJcU (The Minnesota part is at 11:00)

Hey everyone, should I take my quest 2 on a plane? I developed a fear a flying a few years ago, but later this month I’ll be flying for the first time since then. Any advice for flying in general? Also considering getting absolutely hammered before I board. Thanks!

Trapezoid

Is there any world where the first Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer comes out, people hear Chris Pratt’s version of Mario, and everyone collectively says “yeah, that’s actually the perfect Mario!!”? Or was he pretty much screwed no matter what he did in this situation?

Tanner Hoisington

Just resubmitting since last week was a special episode. --------- I'm catching up on the demo episode and it had me wondering: has your purchase hit rate on demos been a net positive or net negative in the modern era? Do we have any data or GDC chatter on the conversion rate of Demos? I'm sure nowadays they use analytics on what you do and I'm so nervous I'm going to send the wrong message if I don't buy and Square is gonna shut down the demo factory!

Nick O'Malley

Howdy, What text-heavy game series would you like to see get chat-gpt style AI integration? A game that adapts and changes in limitless ways based on how you respond, and possibly go on infinitely...

Stevelution

Hey MinnMax, last year I finally played the original Halo trilogy with a buddy in Co-op, it was great. I spoke to him about it recently and realised that’s the only Co-op gaming I’ve done in the last few years. It feels like multiplayer gaming takes so much Co-ordination as an adult that I don’t get to indulge in it. Am I in a minority here? I feel like I have really great experiences on the rare occasions I do get to enjoy it.

Luca Alberti

Heyy crew and Steven! I finally came home from an abroad internship which means I finally get to play Psychonauts 2! Problem is I've also subscribed to GamePass so now I have a queue of 12 games downloading on my Xbox including all 3 Dragon Age games and the Dishonored series. How many games are you usually capable of juggling before you lose the sense of immersion in games?

wittynicknamehere .

Hello, assembled cohorts. I'm writing to ask about the recent video game movie adaptation which is putting yet another gold star on the overall reputation of such adaptations, and which deserves to be seen by anyone who loves a thrilling, always entertaining ride. I'm talking, of course, about the Tetris movie starring Taron Egerton. I was blown away by how good this flick is, and think it stands at or near the top of the game-to-movie pipeline. So I have two questions for you all. One, have any of you watched Tetris? Two, why not? And okay, make it three questions: what's your Mount Rushmore of movies adapted from games?

Heyyy crew! Long time first time, My wife hasn’t really played games since she was a kid. She LOVED Donkey Kong Country, but nothing else really made her want to jump in (and I think she was a bit intimidated). Earlier this week, she just beat Hogwarts Legacy. She been absolutely in love with it. A lot of that comes from the IP (we’re Millennial AF), but she also really enjoyed questing, the role playing, and most surprisingly the combat. I’m proud as heck of her, and she has expressed interest in wanting to play more games like this. Do you all have any recommendations? I’ve been thinking maybe Arkham Asylum (combat) or maybe Kindoms of Amalur? She’s finicky though. Loves Harry Potter, but bored to tears by LOTR… Thanks!

I was recently playing the Mario Kart DLC. By the time it's completed it will have double the amount of tracks the original had, they will have made enough tracks for a complete new game. At the same time I haven't heard of a lot of people playing it. Someone asked recently about if you play DLC and the answers were somewhat mixed if you go back to the game. What is it about adding a number to the title makes people want to play it more than when a developer adds dozens of hours of DLC?

Mark Cruz

Hello Ben and the banjos. First time listener long time emailer What game did you brag to your friends about but couldn’t prove you were good at it because it wasn’t a competitive game. Or a game no one knows you are secretly good at like you play Tetris the grandmaster..etc I used to tell people “I’m like really good at assassins creed” “I pretty much found all The flags without a guide” “almost killed some bosses without being noticed.” “To bad there isn’t multiplayer so I can show you.”

John

Hello all! What is your longest streak playing the same game? I just passed day 200 logging into octopath traveler champions of the continent. Can’t stop now…. P.S. It is actually a pretty good rpg

RickyWinterborn

what's your favorite turn your brain off game? i like skating and snowboarding games.

Adam Cohen

Hello MinnMax crew. Game development takes a really long time these days... But what if it didn't? Let's pretend every game developer has a magic wand that would let them instantly produce and publish a game whenever they want. How often do you think they would or should put out games? Before you say put them out every day, know that games created with the magic wand would still cost the same amount to make, you just wouldn't have to wait on them. Also remember that everyone who makes games would have the same ability.

Chalkfullof

One thing about gaming that’s so different than other media is that it’s really difficult to gauge how much left you have of a game, and this usually causes me to stay up way later than I plan to. When reading a book you can physically feel how much is left to read, when watching a movie you can pause at anytime to see how much time is left, and when binging a tv show you know how long each episode is before deciding whether it’s worth staying up for one more. But with games you don’t have a clear way to tell you how much longer you need to invest. Yes, you can look up how long to beat a game but it’s still highly dependent on skill and how you play the game. Of course there are outliers to this, but I find it interesting; do you?

henrik mortensen

Hallo Do you guys get stressed out when people watch you play a game? Not like on stream, but like your parents, a buddy or someone elsae watches you when you play? I always feel like I need to show the game I am playing from the best side possible and I don´t actually enjoy playing the game. I really want to though. Like when I played Hogwarts Legacy my dad watched me play it and because he was watching I chose the look and style of my wand fast so he didn´t get bored something I regretted for the rest of the game.

Would you rather play a game called Tron: Origins or Tron: Revelations?

If you could be an instrument what would it be and why?

Settle the debate - best piece in a Chex Mix bag? And why is it the rye chip?

During the 64 era tree climbing abounded. Nowadays it's become a lot more rare. So my question is what was the last game you climbed a tree in? And have you ever climbed a tree in real life? My most recent game was Lil Gator Game. As for real life, I did when I was a kid but stunk at it.

Marc Levender

Hi Ben and the crew! I may or may not have just been spoiled something major about a favorite show of mine, I’m usually good about avoiding spoilers but have been traveling for a while and am behind on a ton of things and something just happened to pop up on my twitter feed that clearly tried to vague but gave away a huge development. Are there any major video game moments that were spoiled for you, whether by friends or social media? Do you feel video game spoilers are any different from other media, and how do you tend to handle when it does happen?

Andrew

Have any you spent an alarming amount of money on DLC/microtransactions for a game before? I spent an embarrassing amount of money on loot boxes in Black Ops 3 and I have no idea why that happened. On the bright side, it did act as a cautionary tale by myself to myself.

Joe Garifo

Howdy MinnMax, Took the kids to see the Mario movie and during it they exclaimed “Mario is playing the old timey Nintendo!” Are old Timey and retro the same thing or is retro based on generations or major changes where old timey is based on time that has passed? Hope this comment didn’t hurt you as much as it hurt me.

Hello, Recently I came across a video where someone bought and destroyed a perfectly functional Pac-Man arcade machine. (It was done under the guise of education, but they just smashed it up for views and had nothing worthwhile to say.) My immediate response was disgust, but then I thought "this is no different than someone hoarding that machine in a personal collection". Only a single person/family gets to enjoy the machine in either situation (whether that be smashing it or playing it). I don't think I would feel comfortable having a personal arcade or pinball machine, even if I refurbished it myself. An arcade machine is like a theme park ride to me. Is it just an issue of having no place for these machines, so, like, where else are they going to go besides someone's house? Is it just jealousy? I considered comparing the concept against the idea of owning a game system, but that experience can be easily replicated by others via emulation. I dislike the concept of owning more property than one reasonably needs and this seemed like a pretty explicit example of that. Still, I don't hold this opinion strongly and would like to hear others' thoughts. Thannks.

Hi Minnmax! Do you feel like the ESRB and the various platform holders are doing a good enough job informing consumers about potentially sensitive content? Should they be doing more? Doing less? Or are they doing just the right amount?

Jake Z

You have been chosen to lead a team of video game characters in a heist. Which characters would you choose for your team and what role would each of them play? What game's world would you set your heist in and what is your objective?

micspam

In light of the news that Dreams is being put on life-support(social features being removed, per-user storage capacity decreased) do you think there are any lessons we can learn from Dream's failure to takeoff? Also, everyone should check out Lock, which is IMO the best original game on the Dreams platform.

Kaizoku Risu

Are there any games that you have kept on your Steam wishlist for years even though you never seem to buy them when they go on sale? Are you holding out for a better discount, or do you realistically think you should just finally remove those games from your wishlist?

Mcdoeswell

Hello there MinnMax crew! Why are so many unannounced games getting mentioned in passing such as Mortal Kombat and The Last Ronin? Is this to gauge excitement downstream or is traditional marketing simply losing to appealing to investors/shareholders?

KiwiTheGoo

Hey all, I've been loving the interviews lately. Ben, you come from a video background, what makes you so good at interviewing people? As an English major I know what it's like to work in a field other than your specialty...

Patrick G

I think Capcom should get more praise for their longevity and quality of games. That said, can everyone buy 30 copies of MegaMan battle network legacy collection so we can get Mega Man Legends collection and 3 next, thanks!

SeanWithHats

Hi MinnMax crew, I had really high hopes for Tchia, and it's exceeded those expectations, especially for game of its size/price! If you could soul-jump into one inanimate object, what would it be, and why?

Chree McGee

Hey everybody, With Bowser star Jack Black publicly lobbying for a Red Dead Redemption movie/ tv show adaptation, do you think if they made one they would start with RDR1 or RDR2, given that 2 is a prequel? Which would you prefer- and generally speaking do you like stories told in or out of chronological order?

Swiggity Swoo

Can u still watch the podcast in backstage pass?

Walking Simulator Simulator officially pushed me to subscribe after being a long time viewer, so if it's not already claimed could I officially put my money towards buying Leo and Ben Dairy Queen? It's the least I can do for all the hours of entertainment and virtual company; the other Cohorts can lovingly have the ice cream of my heart! Cheers!

Tonytheswordsman

Wazzup! So when you get a hole in your sock, big enough you have to toss it, do you just throw that one sock out or do you get rid of the pair (even one without a hole)?
