Hello, you lovely bunch—Have you ever bought a game based on the box art and ended up hating the game? For me, it was buying the Battle of Olympus as a kid with my birthday money, only to find out it was 1) a Zelda II ripoff and 2) incredibly difficult and obtuse (like Zelda II!).

Hey MinnMax, after discussing the revered body of work that is Nic Cage’s acting credits with some buddies we got into a debate about the best four year run of films for any actor, my vote went to Harrison Ford for Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blade Runner, Return of the Jedi and Temple of Doom. Who would your pick be? - Stevelution

Game (sort of) Think of a game you’ve always wanted to make. (Give them time). Now, the game is made. You don’t know how it will be received critically, but you know if feels good to you. Will you: A. Release it and let the critics plus the market decide it’s fate! B. Introduce your game into GamePass for more exposure!

Ian Savino

Have you ever learned an instrument? If so, would you ever come back to practicing again?

Victor Jesus Moreno

Minnmax I watched a video of Hanson and Kyle talking about Dragon Ball Fusions but I'm still on the fence about it. What more can you tell me?

Been sitting on this one for a few weeks since I keep missing the call for questions but, after watching the fairly recent (and fantastic The Urbz: Sims in The City stream; everyone go watch it) Anna mentioned a go-to icebreaker that she likes to pull out at parties and such when she's meeting people for the first time. This got me thinking, do any of you all have go to icebreakers for situations where you're meeting new people? PS. Anna's icebreaker was: What's your current or most memorable roommate drama? I would not be opposed to you guys answering that as well

If not for game pass, would an Xbox be worth owning right now? How do they get out of this rut (assuming you agree they've been in a bit of a rut)?

In a pre/digital era, how did print magazines handle early review copies? Were reviewers ever comfortable discussing performance issues when they knew the final product would likely be improved?

With summer maybe approaching, assuming nice weather do you prefer indoor or outdoor events?

What are some games you'd like to see go with the HD 2D look? I'd sell my kidney for an HD 2D Pokemon game

What are your top three pets you would want that you don’t currently have? Mine for example are a hedgehog, Chameleon, and a hairless cat.

Thoughts on the amount of content in the XC3 DLC entire pack, then overall thoughts on the new DLC "Future Redeemed" as a standalone game vs. DLC for the cost of DLC (harken back to XC2: Torna DLC). THANK YOU MM ❤️ 💙 💜

Hey MinnMaxers! I’m currently playing through Forspoken and while most of the game ranges from “meh” to “pretty good!”, the one thing that stands out as being great is the music. The only problem is that it doesn’t seem to play much. Are there any other games that you think should use their great soundtracks more to enhance the experience?

Will there be too much content about Tears of the Kingdom once it releases? Do you think it's all gonna be too much noise to parse through?

Hello! What was your dream job as a kid? if you’re not actively doing it, what dissuaded you? I wanted to be a paleontologist until I learned all the dinosaurs were dead.

How long do these RPG franchises have to go before they stop using Roman numerals? Will they be different for every franchise? We know Final Fantasy will at least go up to XVI but will they go to XXVI or just do Final Fantasy 26, and do you predict franchises like Octopath would move over sooner (presuming Octopath goes that long)? And if it ever goes away from the Roman numerals, will that be the US' fault?

PoorAndCurly

Hey Minnmax! In honor of reaching the pet video patreon goal, what's your favorite story of your pet when you were trying to help them but they weren't having it, and only saw your act of caring and kindness as a betrayal?

Wolf-Headed Conjurer

Remember the Borderlands movie? What’s going on with that? Anyone interested in how that turns out?

This October, I’ll be heading to Japan for three weeks. On the agenda is a trip to the Dragon Quest theme park (and Godzilla park that neighbors it). With Sarah and Leo shipping off soon for a trip to Super Nintendo World with Janet, it begs the question: Which video game or media property is in desperate need of a theme park adaptation? Feel free to answer as your current day selves and you as a 10 year old.

What open world game do you think would be better linear? I've been playing Ghostwire Tokyo and every aspect of the open world feels unnecessary and often detrimental to enjoying it

Hey MinnMax, In the next few years what franchise do you think is going to see the biggest increase in metacritic between their last release and their new release? For example, Diablo Immortal for PC has a 59% on metacritic. Hopefully Diablo 4 lands somewhere in the 80s. Do you think any other franchise could see a bigger increase than that?

Hello! I'm starting Jedi: Survivor and I've never had a game ask me if I'm sitting on the couch or at a monitor and it got me wondering what's the weirdest prompt/setting you've had before a game?

Dear MinnMax Inc., would you consider a mech suit (BT 7274 from Titanfall, MechWarrior, Armored Core, etc.) a "vehicle?" if a mech suit is a vehicle, are Tony Stark's Iron Man suits vehicles? Samus' Varia Suit? are my socks a vehicle? what about pants? sincerely, confused ps - when was the last time you played a game that didn't have a double jump mechanic?

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and Friennds, What quip from a game has made its way into your gaming lexicon? For me it’s the classic “baby makes 3” from Ghost Recon Wildlands

MakeItUnclear

As a big fan of Octopath Traveler who thinks it still had some glaring, frustrating design choices, I think the sequel is better in almost every way. But my biggest gripe remains: So little interaction happens between any of the 8 characters outside of a few optional "travel banter" and "crossed paths" moments. In most of my favorite JRPGs, the party's relationship dynamic is always one of the highlights, and Square nailed it so many times literal decades ago, sometimes with bigger casts of characters. Why can't they seem to pull it off in this otherwise extremely loving homage to the JRPGs of yesteryear?

Michael Berry

I always dug the weird services that were offered on PS3. PS Home, Vidzone, the interactive magazine Q.O.R.E. Not all of them landed but I appreciated the novelty. Similarly, Xbox had the 1vs100 and Nintendo had Miiverse. I miss services like these. Now, all of the services seem kinda samey. Do you think the days of experimental services are over? And what were some of your favorite defunct ones?

Phil DeGrave

Hey, hey! Been wanting to get Sarah’s thoughts on this since she seems to be the main person at Minnmax that’s excited for Baldur’s Gate 3. Up until Cyberpunk, CD Projekt head a “most favored” status with gamers. It feel like no one has filled that void since. Do you think Larian has a chance? I feel they have been building a lot of good will with gamers since Divinity Original Sin and really upped it with Divinity Original Sin 2. It has only seemed to increase in the nearly two years (by the time it releases) of early access for Baldur’s Gate 3. Their connection and responsiveness to the community seems unparalleled right now.

Hi Minnmax! I meant to tell this story last week with the Burning Shores talk, but that this story involves Burning Shores is just the hook, not the point. It’s kind of long, so sorry. So, for context, thanks to what I was interested in during college, I took up Arabic as a second language and have been speaking for about 5 years now. I’m getting a lot better, something that was helped by some time I spent living in Jordan last year. While there, I was happy to discover that Horizon Zero Dawn on Steam has full Arabic voice and text options—so I played through the whole thing in Arabic! Following that, I was really excited to replay Forbidden West in Arabic when I got back to my PS5. But when I got back, I discovered that the American region disk has no Arabic language voice option. This was disappointing, but hey, I knew I was returning to Jordan to get my cat later and I knew where I had seen a store selling HFW, so I resolved to just get the Arabic region version when I was there. So okay, I get the Arabic region version, get it home, and boot it up. It’s working great! I get through about half the game in Arabic. Then Burning Shores comes out. When I install Burning Shores, the Arabic region version doesn’t pop the quest to start Burning Shores. But hey, maybe it’s not updated. So, I reinstall the American version and accept that I will have to play Burning Shores in English. Then last week I see that Horizon has an update—and I have two copies of it in my queue, same version number so both games must be getting updated. Okay, great! So now I can try Burning Shores on the Arabic disk, right? No. Turns out, DLC is region locked to the playstation store account. So even though I have an Arabic region disk, I can’t apply DLC purchased on the American store to it. After doing some research, I discover that I can get the Arabic region DLC if I open a new PS account and tell it I’m in the Arabic region. So I do that, then discover that, since I don’t have a credit card in that region, I have to pay through gift cards. Here I make my own mistake, and forget which country I told PSN to use, so I buy an extra PS gift card code (anyone with a Kuwaiti PS account hit me up I’ll give it away). So then I’m downloading the DLC and assuming that it will only work on the Arabic region account, so I look to see if I can transfer my saves. Also no. There is no way to transfer playstation 5 saves even between accounts on the same device, so if I’m locked to this account then I have to restart in order to access burning shores in Arabic. Luckily, that part at least wasn’t important—seems that even though I downloaded the DLC on the Arabic account, I can still use it on the American account where my saves are. Phew! Finally I can get back to my Arabic save and play that version of Burning Shores. So this was an odyssey, and it left me thinking—I wouldn’t have had to do any of this if Playstation had simply included all of the possible language options that they had produced on the American disk in the first place! At that point it seems like a choice rather than a limitation, but the effect is basically the same from what I can see. While language learners can always pick up books or watch films in their target language, people whose main hobby is gaming are out of luck for a lot of languages. I’m not sure there’s a question here, except what the heck? Discuss.

Phil DeGrave

One other thing…Redfall has a lot in common with Gotham Knights: performance issues, empty open world, subpar graphics for “next gen,” so-so solo play, so-so co-op play. It feels like the technology for open-world, untethered games just isn’t there yet. What’s hailed as a marketing bullet point is really an albatross around developers’ necks. Both games feel like they would have benefited from focused, single-player experiences. And Rocksteady is still threatening to release Suicide Squad next year!

Patrick G

Hey all, Is there a movie or show that doesn’t have a video game tie in you would like to see/play? I think something set in the Interstellar world would be really cool

Marc Levender

Hey everyone, what game mechanic did you discover late in game or somehow missed entirely that would have entirely changed the way you played the game? I wonder if developers could be telegraphing the significance of certain mechanics better or if it’s my fault for sometimes totally glossing over tutorial sections. What’s the solution here for a happy balance?

Fatt Mish

Hello Minnmaxians! I love Hi-Fi Rush's Saturday morning cartoon aesthetic... but, I was wondering, which Saturday morning cartoon from your childhood, would you love to see in a video game adaptation? -Mars

Question to everyone and especially my fellow homeowners: Do you keep your front door/porch light on at night? My wife and I never keep ours on unless we are expecting guests. Every time I drive up my street when it's dark, all of my neighbors front door lights are on. Are we strange? Should we be following the norm on this, or continue blazing our own path? And if you keep yours on at night, why? Thanks, MyNameIsDan

Jacob Thompson

Hello cohorts! After seeing the Redfall reviews, I've been thinking about how it (along with Jedi Survivor) is yet another game in the long line of underwhelming and/or broken AAA releases we have been getting the last few years. Why hasn't this trend subsided? To me, I think the publishers just done care because broken games must still be selling well enough for them to meet their goals. Because if they thought putting out a broken game would cost them money, they wouldn't put out a broken game. Yes they take a PR hit, but over time that hasn't appeared to affect sales numbers. Is my logic sound or am I missing something? Do we need to do more to try and convince consumers to not preorder games or buy broken games? Because when an undercooked game comes out, critics aren't happy, consumers aren't happy, and I'm sure the devs aren't happy. The only entity that benefits seems to be the publisher, so I feel like something more needs to be done to convince them that this situation sucks for everyone except them. Thanks for all you guys do, and on a lighter note I'm excited to start working on my short documentary soon!

CrabPalace

You've recently speculated that there are going to be some people very angry about performance struggles in Tears of the Kingdom. What's a backlash you can predict relating purely on game design? I personally think Spiderman 2 is going to really struggle to advance the formula of the first game and Miles Morales and some gamers will not be happy! (It will still sell gazillions.)

Michael Hash

Hey, everyone! I was wondering about emoji etiquette. When is it appropriate to send emoji? Are they only for personal use, or is there a place for emoji in professional communication? Will we ever develop an emoji grammatical system of rules? I’m curious about the group’s emoji usage dos and don’ts.

SideEye Bro

If you could take modern game designers and put them in the 90s era, do you think it would change the history of games as we know it? Or game design was simply limited only by technology back then? Meaning that game designers from today wouldn't really have come up with something different in the 90s.

Chandler

Out of the four of you, who has the coolest parents? Do you think they'd enjoy hanging out with each other?

Forrest With Two Rs

In all seriousness, when's the last time you heard someone talk about Overwatch 2?

Alex Hanavan

Cassette Beasts is a fantastic example of taking a beloved genre and reinventing it (or remixing it if you will) in a way that feels genuinely fresh. The same could also be said for Hi-Fi Rush with rhythm games. What game genre or sub-genre do you think is well overdue for a reinvention after churning out lazy, samey experiences over the last decade? Personally I would love a totally new take on the tower defense genre as well as the town building sim genre.

InstagramExpert

Hello MinnMax I just build the tallneck lego set and I was wondering what gading lego sets would you guys like to see?

Garrett Wainstock

Hello, Would you rather build a new LEGO from any set you'd like or from an infinite pile of bricks? Thannks

Echo

Can you guys imagine a bizarro gaming landscape where everything is backward? All the kids are playing Lawbreakers instead of Fortnite. Breath of the Wild and Elden Ring were flops and Horizon was king. Game Pass failed but Google Stadia was a massive success. What other crazy reversals can you think of?

Ian Loring

Is Gamepass itself a problem with Microsoft’s approach to game development? Redfall feels like it’s been hamstrung by a lack of budget for what it wanted to do and time to get polish it needed. It feels like it was pushed out to get some subs over the Spring. If this were JUST a full premium price release would the result have been the same?

Luca Alberti

Hey Panel. I have a bone to pick with video game awards. Most shows/websites give awards for best Narrative and best Direction. However you hardly ever see an award for best Gameplay. You know, the central part of video games. I know the market is so broad that you can hardly judge one gameplay to be better, so we rely on genres...yet we never have an award for best platformer...or Metroidvania, and it's not like we're missing candidates, heck almost every year the best fighting game category has some oddball nominee that has the FGC rolling their eyes, yet the category is there every year. Why do we do this?

Brian Lyness

Hey Ben + Crew I recently completed Teslagrad 2 which seems to have flew completely under the radar. You didn't even mention it yourselves when going over the games that were at the recent Nintendo Indie World Showcase. It's a pity because it's an extremely good game for its short running time of 4 hours. It has shades of Inside's environmental storytelling, some great physics based puzzles, plus the abilities you get to move around the world make traversal a joy. Give this game a chance dammit! :D

Bob Buel

What’s the best video game with the worst UI or HUD?

Steve Bellegarde

Jedi Survivor reminds me that I don’t understand why Metroidvania design is fun. You first discover a cool secret only to realize that you don’t have what you need to fully explore it. So you just add it to a chore list to return to. The gameplay itself of returning isn’t fun. Is it? To me it just seems like the game saying “no” to me and punishing me for exploring before I’m allowed to.

bizkiut (Nick S.)

Hey CLCs, if you were a type of soup, what would you be?

Aron Roberts

Hi crew! Long-time listener, first-time questioner (just joined the patreon last month, but I've been listening to most of you for ~7 yrs!) So the Armored Core series has been my obsession since From Soft announced Armored Core VI at the game awards. By now I've spent way too much money going backwards in time to play the older games, but I don't regret a single dollar because I'm seeeeriously loving them. They are bringing me the kind of "blissful childlike gaming joy" that seems so hard for me to find these days, and they are slowly entering my "top franchises of all time" list. Even the original from 1997 was a ton of fun. Two questions: First, did any of y'all see the ACVI gameplay trailer that dropped last week, and do you have any thoughts about it? And second, have any of you ever gone back to play an old franchise and discovered that you love it? Are there any franchises or individual games that give you that feeling of "blissful childlike gaming joy," old or otherwise? Okay, maybe that's 3 questions. Please don't sue :) Cheers, and thanks for everything you guys do!

Christian Jimenez

Hello, So I had an old family friend visit us here in Los Angeles not too long ago. She lives in Minnesota now and she brought us some gifts. I got a baseball cap with the Minnesota State outline and I don't know what to do with it. I've never been but hopefully I can visit one day, but I'm also not much of a hat person. What should I do with it?? Can I give it to Janet! Thanks!

MrButtons

Hey friends, Sorry if this question is a downer, but with the screenwriters strike officially starting this week, do you think the video game industry is primed for a similar event in the near future? With the recent reports of near billion dollar budgets for some AAA games during the hearing over the Microsoft/Activision merger, along with some recent smaller strikes such as the one led by Raven Software and an ever increasing focus on crunch culture, it feels like the game industry is primed for a major shift in how those who work within this space are treated and compensated. Is this just wishful thinking or is it an inevitability?

Greetings MinnMax fellowship! I can't help but notice how many villains are designed to be hotties these days. Is this just a phase? What comes next?

KiwiTheGoo

Janet keeps throwing out a great "Metal Gear!?" impression every time the crew talks about the MGS games to deafening silence and I just want to underline it and say, I see you Janet, keep it up! To the rest of the crew: what's your favorite line from a video game?

IanTClark

This is for Kelsey, but I appreciate you all. I need to tell you something Kelsey. I found all my OG NES game packages. These are in mint condition. I’m talking Kung-Fu, Gumshoe, Burger Time, Zelda 2, Castlevania 2 & 3, Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2, and so many other weird ones. Apparently they were in my parents attic. Let me reiterate, they look like they were printed yesterday. What should I do with them? I’ll send pics.

Beau!

With all of Playstation's upcoming live service games should Sony create one PlayStation battle pass that works for all live games? Maybe merge PlayStation stars in so I am unlocking items or credits for a live game just by playing and buying games. Simple is better IMO.

thejjuan1

Hello minnmax crew With all the Ls Microsoft took this last week with the block of buying microsoft blocked from buying activision, redfall low reviews and a 30% lost of console sales. What is the future for Microsoft? While I thought Microsoft can take one lost in a generation, but two in a row might be trouble for Microsoft. What you think we will see from Xbox in the next year or two. And thank you Kelsey for getting Xenoblade Chronicles 3 as number 3 in the two tens. PS way better than elder ring.

Derek Achoy

This is a question for Kelsey, Janet and Sarah! If Ben had a pet, would it be a cat, dog or bird, and what would he name it?

Shawn Mills

If you had the power to erase one video game from history like The Beatles get erased in the movie Yesterday, would you do it and what game would you erase?

Malcolm Holliday

Hey MinnMax! Have you ever tried using video games to learn a new language? For a year I played most of my 3DS games fully in Spanish, mainly Pokemon and Monster Hunter, can't say it was very successful but it was interesting experience for sure.

Patrick Hughes

Ahoy good folks of MinnMax. Keeping it simple this week because the only thing on my mind / radar at the moment is Tears of the Kingdom - So, which game has the best version of the following Zelda characters according to MinnMax? - Link - Zelda - Ganon / Ganondorf

Dusty Beaman

Ben, did you ever figure out why your clothes were smelling (community questions 01/15/2020)?

jkk411

In "dishonor" of Redfall's release this week and because of Hanson's confusing disdain for the profession of acting, can we take a moment to appreciate the bizarrely stacked cast of Arkane's Dishonored and Dishonored 2? Performers included Rosario Dawson, Lena Headey, Susan Sarandon, John Slattery, Chloe Grace Moretz, Carrie Fisher, Vincent D'Onofrio, Pedro Pascal, Sam Rockwell and even Rockay City's own Michael Madsen to name a few. Don't get me wrong, we still get celebrities in games all the time, but it doesn't seem like studios go all in like this anymore. Why do you think that is? Is it a cost savings thing? Is it harder in the era of performance capture to lockdown the talent? It feels like the age of the endless call sheet for a game like GTA Vice City is over.

Linn

Take a guess! I’m getting married in 3 weeks, and we are walking up the aisle together to “Gusty Gardens”. How many of the guests will know the song?

given the choice, I always play as a fast, dexterous class, or ranged and sneaky in every game I play. except monster hunter, which I exclusively play using the hammer. slow, up close, against everything I'm normally used to. are there any games/series where you play wildly differently than what you typically lean towards? classes, weapons, etc..

Greetings Minnmaxers, What’s your productivity workflow like? I have been trying to optimize my working workflow a bit and curious if anyone has a set standard for not only getting things done., but improving the process. This can be about work, home life, workouts, collecting, gaming, anything! Tips welcome

I am writing in with a completed BetterQuest goal. Last April when I returned to working in the office 3 times a week, I made a vow to complete my very first pokedex in Legends Arceus. After one year of train rides 3 times/year, I have accomplished my goal! But MinnMax, I have a much more pressing issue I need advice on. And I bet there are at least a handful of others listening in my same exact situation. Breath of the Wild is the best game I have ever played and I am OOZING with anticipation for TOTK. But, I am still playing on a launch switch. Please, please share your thoughts on if us measly launch switch players should upgrade to the switch OLED. Thank you.

LlorchDurden

Hello there! Fun prediction time. What would you say Nintendo is going to name Switch successor? My money is on the "Nintendo Clip" (picture a GBA SP or sort of a foldable phone) Other suggestions from the discord - Super Nintendo Switch (it'd make sense but it's Nintendo we're talking about ) - Nintendo 3 (I assume to remind us Mother 3 won't happen) - Nintendo Switch... U?
