Benn Does it annoy you that Instagram captions always have it as a Midmax?

Hi All, hope your week is going well. I wanted to ask about your first memory of being disappointed by a game you were hyped for? Were you old enough to understand those feeling? I remember 10 y/o me buying Soul Calibur 3 after years of waiting and feeling confused about it. If anyone would ask, I would certainly say I liked it more than the prior entries. After all, it was newer and the graphics were better. But in my head, I knew I was lying. I just didn't know why. It wasn't until I matured some that I came to terms with how I was felt. Did anything like that happen to you?

Nintendo’s earnings call this week set off the Switch 2 rumors again. Is fall 24 too soon for a Switch 2? What would you like to see in a switch 2?

It's Hugo's Nook

Hello there you lovable geeks, Reading “Some MinnMax News” in the show run is anxiety inducing. Reminds me of when the CEO of the company I work at sent a 15min end of day meeting invite for me. Thankfully she foresaw I’d be stressed out wondering about it and she tilted the meeting as “don’t worry - it’s about a good thing”, and indeed it was (my green card!). My question to the panel is: whats the last time you kept anxiously waiting for something that there was no need for?

Mitch

I’m catching up on some podcasts so this is following up on your discussion a couple weeks ago about the best game still trapped in Japan. For me the answer is Segagaga. One of the very last games released for the Dreamcast in 2001, it’s a bizarre RPG where you battle other Sega employees and JPEGs of Sega characters like Samba de Amigo. There’s a fan translation in the works but we’re 20 years in without an end in sight. Here’s an explanation I pulled from a forum comment that explains the difficulty in bringing it to a western audience: This is the issue. There is an English characterset in the game but it's double width meaning there is only half the space versus the Japanese characters to translate, meaning it's pretty hard to do a worthwhile translation without dramatically altering the game.

Let's talk about that Phil Spencer interview! As a guy stuck in the Playstation ecosystem, I appreciate that kind of honesty from any CEO. My real question though is what do you think happens to Bethesda games? It seemed as if they were going to be XBox/PC exclusives, but does this new info change things? Does being exclusive make sense anymore?

Hello Ben and the 'horts! There isn't a millennial alive that can hear the word "commiserating" without repeating it in their head Blink 182 style: com-mis-er-a-ting. What are some words or phrases that you associate with a song, or line from a movie or game, that you just can't help but repeat in a specific way every time you hear it.

Derek Achoy

What's your second favourite game of all time, and what would need to change about it to bump it up to first?

Kit N

Hey there, So I just watched Leo's new great video "I got stuck in your computer" and it's one of the all timers. So, therefore I ask y'all, both new and recent, what are some best of all time videos or video essays that you routinely think of or return to.

Catpurrnicus

Hello all, If they started offering implants for Cyberpunk-lite add-ons would you want one? Add-ons available but not limited would be a drill attachments for your hand, flashlight on your fingers, binoculars, USB charging port, roller blade wheels on your feet, finger can turn into a pen. You can always switch between your current appendage and I'm assuming all items automatically power up because if the Matrix taught me anything it's that the human body is a giant battery. If none of those interest you, think of your own.

Noe Monsivais

Hello MinnMaxers Think of a video game you’ve always wanted to make. (Give them time). Now, your video game is made. You don’t know how it will be received critically, but you know if feels good to you. Will you: A. Release it outside of GamePass and let the critics plus the market decide it’s fate! B. Introduce your game into GamePass for more exposure!

RickyWinterborn

if you could alter the flow of time in reality like a youtube video, .75 speed for when your at the beach or 2x to get through a work day quicker, would you utilize it or just let time flow normally

Ronmar the Only

Good day team! As someone who got their first switch with the Zelda OLED and has started Breath of the Wild, do you think I should play Breath and Tears concurrently or consecutively or just proceed with Tears?

Hayden Williams

Hey guys, hope you are all doing well! With the MinnMax Pet Documentary now released, I wanted to ask - who are some of gaming’s best pets? Who are your favorites? And which ones would make an interesting documentary on the best pets in video games?

Modestbrock

What's the best game you hate and the worst game you love.

Palo

Hello Jenna (and the rest of the crew), can you sell the MinnMax community on Demonschool? The limited time demo now available on steam rules. Also was it hard jumping into your role at the tail end of Hyper Gunsport given the crazy dev cycle for that title?

Thom Blackburn

If Iwere to guess the minnmax news, it would be that you're moving away from Minnesota. I can't believe that this is definitely going to happen!

Jason Wojnar

I'm trying to sell and get rid of virtually all of my belongings in the US before living abroad again (including my mother's stuff so she can move around easier and my late dad's stuff). Do you have attachment to things in your house from childhood? At this point I would be content soaking it all in gasoline and getting it all over with in a big bonfire. -Jason

Fred Dinovo

Howdy 'horts, If given the choice would you prefer a 5-6 year gap between new entries in the Legend of Zelda or a more regular release cadence where the games are maybe less revolutionary each time they come out? Big bombast every half decade or more regular entries into the series?

Bloody Waffle

Most gaming systems have hundreds of released games. As of today, what gaming system/handheld would you be able to play exclusively for the next 5 years? Why? What series or genre helped you make this decision? I would go with the PS2, I missed a lot of JRPGs during this era so that's gonna be enough to cover the 5 years for me in itself. The loading screens themselves will help time past.

Alex Britt

Hi MinnMax! I think Cal Kestis is a great star wars character and Cameron Monaghan did a great job bringing him to life. I felt the customization options really helped flavor his performance to your preference. Seeing Cal in cutscenes with a righteous mustache and long hair made it all click for me. So, if you're likeness and voice was to be used in a game, existing IP or something new, what would you want to be in? What kind of customization options would you like to see on your likeness? I think it would be fun to zoom around as a Cohort with a stylish mullet and soul patch. Thanks! Alex Britt

Scott Castro

Hello special guest Jenna and Minnmax dudes: I'm attending an in-store midnight game release first time in six years on Thursday for Tears of the Kingdom (my last was Breath of the Wild). Do you think in-store midnight game releases could make a comeback? Should they? What would you want to see, as a fan, from a modern midnight release (besides store staff getting paid overtime, which I hope they are!) Keep up the great work!

Kraven Morcome

Hey MinnMax, Lately I've noticed more discourse online where people seem to be rooting for companies instead of rooting for actually good games. Things like "Redfall may not be very good but Microsoft is still making lots of money with gamepass so it doesn't matter." Ignoring the flawed logic of that, why do fanboys care about the profit of a mega corporation and not the product that they are paying for?

Davey Peppers

Hello Jenna and cohorts, I know Ms. Stoeber has mentioned multiple times her deep love for the 1973 Wicker Man, and it got me thinking about that sort of paranoid folk horror in games. Outside of a few examples like Mundaun, it seems underrepresented as a game topic, is that due to the genre being less popular in films these days or is there something unique about the subgenre that you all feel makes it harder to turn into an interactive experience? As always, praise for the MinnMax content, Leo, the parasocial relationship you made video is awesome, and Jenna, loving your solo videos, keep up the great work everyone!

Jared Piers

Hey Everyone, With so many long games being released lately and not nearly enough time to play them all, I've been thinking about starting a retirement games list. Assuming I get to retire, I'm going to suddenly have a lot of extra time and why not fill it with the games I couldnt make time for when I was young. Have you ever thought of this? What would be on your retirement games list?

Patrick G

With Tears of the Kingdoms release, where were you 6 years ago? What's some things that have changed in your lives when BOTW came out vs now. I got my switch and BOTW at midnight, living at home thinking 1 2 switch would be the party game of the year. Now two jobs later, my own apartment with my partner and a cat, I can't wait to play TOTK. A lot can change in 6 years! - Patrick G

Inside baseball question for you. What are the internal conversations like when a review comes in significantly higher or lower than the consensus opinion? Is there much conflict? As an example, were people at gameinformer surprised at all by Skyward Sword receiving a 10 after more editors had played it?

BEEFCAKE

I just wanted to remind everyone that hi-fi rush is awesome, and is currently game of the year 2023.

My wife and I are celebrating our first wedding anniversary with a two-week vacation starting on Saturday. The trip includes Super Mario World in LA, then afterward heading to New Zealand for our first time ever. I am beyond excited for the trip! However, I hate the timing of this because when I am excited enough for a new game, all I want to do is play it. This means I won't have much time for Tears of the Kingdom aside from the flights. This is probably the biggest and most first-world gaming problem I've ever had. That got me thinking, what is the most first-world gamer problem you've ever had? P.S. Happy early first wedding anniversary, Hanson!

SlyCut

Hello all, Do you think podcasts will always be called podcasts? The word "podcast" was coined in 2004, combining the words iPod and broadcast. Before that, podcasts were usually called audioblogs. With the evolution of cell phones, iPods aren't really popular today, but the term podcast has stuck anyway. Will they still be calling them podcasts one hundred years from now when no one even knows what an iPod is? And if you had to pick a new name for podcasts, what would it be?

Omega Ranking

Hey minnmaxers, I'm really looking forward to Tears of the Kingdom, but have previously only played (and completed) Breath of the Wild in the Zelda franchise. This makes me feel like a phoney Zelda fan, and I feel like I can't say I am one for fear of my lack of knowledge around the rest of the games. What gaming franchises are you phoney fan of?

Jonathan Haile

Howdy Ho Minny Min Maxxer! Since Zelda is quite possibly all 75% of the gaming community will be talking about until the sequel to the sequel of Breath of the Wild is announced, I want to ask how would Link perform in a cooking show like Chopped? He seemly can cook a hearty meal out of anything. Mushrooms, Monster parts, Fairy juice, eggs, milk that’s been in his inventory for a 100 hours, and so on. What ingredients would you give him to make a dish? How would he plate it? Could he properly describe the dish with his lack of speech? Personally I feel like he would throw all the ingredients on to a stick and stare blankly at me until I declare him the winner.

RynaGoGo

Howdy Mr Ben MinnMax and the MinnMaxers from MinnMax! You can be in a pickle. Something could be bananas to you. You might be cool as a cucumber. There’s plenty of food sayings but nothing about garbanzo beans? Garbanzo is the most fun food word to say and we aren’t using it enough. What’s a type of situation that’s totally Garbonzo?

Dan from Canada

Name your biggest “oh I wish I didn’t look that up in a guide”. Where something that you should have stuck with it but gave up and missed out on a big satisfying solution. Mine was probably the final boss in link between worlds with the arrows..

Phelix Diaz

Recently reacquired a PS3 and I finally was able to play Metal Gear: Revengeance. Raiden has had such a journey, fom being the guy who most people hated replacing Snake to this awesome ninja cyborg. I think he is mostly skating by on his looks alone, but his design is amazing. Can you think of any other character that has gone through a better glow-up?

LlorchDurden

Since recently Ben got booed and such I wanted to cheer it up a bit highlighting something Ben's really good at. I trully think he's one of the best interviewers out there in the gaming industry and I could watch him interview anybody and I'd buy into it, so, to everyone else in the podcast , who would you want Ben to interview?( ideally, just for you , regardless of how relevant it is / how well it'd perform on youtube and such). For me it'd be Sean Murray "so many years later"

Blazingscourge

What location are you looking most forward to returning to in Tears of the Kingdom? What location are you dreading going back to?

Adam Rostan

Hello all! I’m so glad Jenna’s on the pod! Especially since she’s the coolest person at Necrosoft. (Everyone play the Demonschool demon available until May 14th) I really enjoyed Jenna’s experiment with her one hour video highlighting YouTube’s flawed system for what picks up traffic. How do y’all feel about subverting expectations around content? What else would y’all, respectively, like to make that goes against the grain?

Dusty Beaman

Since I have 0 interest in playing Tears of the Kingdom, what should I be excited for/playing instead?

Marc

Hi everyone! I am a therapist and in therapy I often connect with my clients over a shared love of video games. It has been interesting to hear how differently people use video games for selfcare and supporting their mental health. For example, some use video games as their main social activity where others game only solo for more of an escape. I know it might be different for you all since video games are part of your work life but please share how you use video games to support your mental health and/or selfcare. Thanks!

Ben Shively

Any Xbox Showcase predictions/hopes? After listening to the Phil Spencer interview from Kinda Funny, it sounds like he knows they have to show some things to get the Xbox audience excited again after Redfall. Personally, all I would need is The Evil Within 3 to be happy.

Spencer Botine

Hey Crew! With a rocky performance launch for Jedi: Survivor and the subsequent lambasting over Redfall, last week had me thinking a lot about the sustainability of AAA games development. More and more every year we see large budget titles release in states ranging from less than desirable to down right unacceptable, and I can't help but think it could be due to consumer's new expectations of a AAA title. For example: I'm enjoying Jedi: Survivor, but it's unnecessarily massive! I loved being able to 100% Fallen Order in 20 - 30 hours. Are gamers becoming too demanding for the biggest bang for their buck? Would it be so awful for the big titles to aim for shorter experiences in order to ensure performance hits as expected? What are your preferences? Thanks for being my favorite gaming outlet, cheers!

Micah Tillman

Will AI eventually (1) do everyone's jobs for them, or (2) take everyone's jobs from them? (Will we no longer have to work, and thus get to play games 24/7? Or will we lose our incomes and starve to death?)

Duderado

What's your favorite inanimate object turned video game companion? Characters possessing objects like the King of Red Lions from Wind Waker counts. I always enjoyed the quip-spewing sword Lilarcor from Baldur's Gate 2.

PhillyYeetSteak

Hey Minnmax! I recently started playing Ghost Recon Breakpoint, and was surprised to discover they patched in an option to completely remove gearscores/the tiered loot system that the game launched with. The game is undoubtedly better with these things removed. Are there any games that would benefit from having huge aspects of their gameplay ripped out?

Herb Alamo

Since you’re gonna be talking about Apple Arcade this week, I wanted to ask about a specific game that was featured recently by Apple. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate is a rogue like beat’em up reminiscent of Hades, that was tons of fun to play with a controller. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles shredder‘s revenge recently released on GamePass, and was a throwback traditional beat’em up with some quality of life improvements. While I enjoyed this more traditional experience, I found that splintered fate was just simply more compelling. How do you and the cohorts feel about these two games? Any preference either way? Also, super refreshing to not have any micro transactions in either game! Keep up the good work, love y’all.

Cath

How do I survive not being interested in the next big video game hypes this years. Like the next three most anticipated games I have zero interest and yet I love the gaming community. Please help me survive this

CptCobblePot

Greetings Minnmaxers - What makes you feel inspired to play a new game? Is it because you just purchased it, you are going through a list, it just seems interesting, it’s quick to play? Tell all of us your motivations for your deepest gaming desires. Thank you.

Neil Greig

Hey crew! If in real life you had to fuse one regular household item with one food item, tears of the Kingdom style, what would you pick and why? Love the show!

Luis Pérez

Hi MinnMax with two N's crew! Seeing Tears of the Kingdom create entirely new powers focused on creativity made me think of how Nintendo is clearly leaning on players finding unusual answers to Breath of the Wild's puzzles and situations, at times relying on glitches or tiny windows of opportunity to achieve feats of wonder. With this in mind, what's your favorite bug or glitch in a game that eventually became a feature on its sequel? My personal favorite is the Peninsulas of Power, a small grid in Final Fantasy that contained much higher-level monsters and allowed power-leveling. Thank you for your hard work! Wishing you the best, and ready to play Tears of the Kingdom all weekend long.

umryan

I had a personal epiphany around the age of 13 that I still think holds true today, over 20 years later. I don't think there has been a day of my life where I haven't heard a single song or piece of music. Do you think this might also be true for yourselves?

Shimmy Neutron

Oi Mates, simple question, do you still get hype? Like teenage levels of I'm so excited for this game I scream an shout and jump all about. If so what were the last times? The fact that I lost my ish during recent reveals like armored core, FF7R, and Monster Hunter World, reminds me that I still have tremendous passion for gaming despite getting older or the increased snark almost everyone in games coverage tends to show. Golly gee it makes me proud. Keep doing what you love folks

BEEFCAKE

Are critics too critical? How do you calibrate your own criticism? Generally speaking, if you rate something it’s heavily influenced by your own tastes, but what if your tastes have changed without you realizing it.

Oliver Deeds

1) Has there been ANY actual evolution in the combat of Zelda games since the first game (...horse combat aside)? I would love to see some Arkham Asylum meets Zelda sword combat. And maybe sprinkle some Shadow of Mordor Nemesis System for good measure. 2) I am so sick of hearing people say, Nintendo needs to evolve Zelda into a strong character. She HAS evolved! Nintendo just hasn't used her bad a$$ form (Shiek) in a long time for some reason.

Luca Alberti

*waves* Hi, MinnMax! Reading the "Ask the Developers" articles on Nintendo's website I learned there's a big focus on hands in TotK that goes beyond Link's corrupted arm, something similar could be said about Elden Ring, last year's GOTY winner. Does this mean Glover or ARMS 2 are bound to win GOTY 2024?

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and Friennds, What quip from a game has made its way into your gaming lexicon? For me it’s the classic “baby makes 3” from Ghost Recon Wildlands

Graham Jones

Hey Ben et al. I don't have a question as much as a quest... I want you and the crew to recast the Jurassic park movie with the minnmax family. Who is Alan Grant? Who is Dennis nedry? Who plays the T-Rex?!? We HAVE to get to the bottom of this!!

James Ford

G'day Ben and the Horts. How do you approach runs in a Roguelite/like? Are you always trying to have the most optimal playthrough to get to the end or do you like to experiment heavily and see everything?

Fatt Mish

Hi Minnmax crew! If you had the ability to wish one year of terrible gaming on your worst enemy, which game would you choose for them/him/her? Love the show! -Mars

Mcdoeswell

Hello there Minnmax Crew! Do you have any pre gaming rituals? For example mine is being a drink gremlin and having all my drinks ready before I sit down with controller on hand.

James Ford

G'day Ben and friends! There has been a lot of talk about Xbox this week thanks to Redfall, the CMA saying no to the ABK buy out and Phils interview on kinda funny. While things might not be perfect for the team in green at the moment, if you had someone that wants to get in to gaming come to you andask you what console to buy, is Xbox and Gamepass the stand out recommendation? And if so is this really where Xbox are focusing thier attempts to get market share, since as Phil touched on the Kinda Funny Interview, most current gamers have an established library that makes it much harder to change if you are a one console house

Vilis

Minnmaxxers! I'm personally intrigued with all the wild new gameplay options in Tears of The Kingdom, however, do y'all think Tears of The Kingdom reviews are going to suffer, not because of the game, but because the hardware it's running on? Are fans of Breath of The Wild, people who bought a Switch just for that shiny new gem, going to find fault with this next entry due to it not being the fresh new thing that lit their fires 6 years ago? More personally, is anyone at MinnMax coming in with hesitation due to either sequelitis or hardware concerns?

Patrick Hughes

Hoy good folks of MinnMax. Breath of the Wild redefined / sparked a new era for open world or "open air" games I should say. Do you foresee a new defining feature of Tears of the Kingdom cultivating another generation of games to come and if so, what feature/mechanic will that be?

Steve Bellegarde

When Breath of the Wild released in 2017 I had just met my girlfriend (now wife). I always associate that game with that time in my life now. Are there any games that are tied to specific memories for you all?

Spencer Jenson

Do you keep Leo in a little box and bring him on the podcast to make him laugh for your(Ben) own pleasure sometimes? You(Ben) seem to get a kick out of stealing patented Leo Vader joke cracking sometimes. Thanks for bringing guests onto the show to talk about little green boys(Not Leo).

Spencer Jenson

Hi Ben and cohorts! New patron here. I wasn’t super familiar with your content so I watched some of your older stuff to get a sense of what you are about. Over the past month I have been listening to some of your podcasts during your first year when it was just Ben, Kyle, Jeff M, and Suriel. There were a lot of common reoccurrences and themes that I noticed popping up. I hope you would be willing to clarify some things for a new listener. 1. How many N’s are in MinnMax? Is it 1 N or 3? 2. Is Kyle a father? I appreciate hearing the perspective of a parent when it comes to videogames. Unfortunately he never seems to make it clear if he has a child. You think he would have mentioned it at least once. 3. Can Jeff M please give his thoughts on playing Red Dead Redemption 2 all the way to end credits? 4. Do you think friend of the show Suriel thought about Advanced Wars today? All kidding aside, I think you are all great! I look forward to supporting this awesome channel about games, friends, and getting better! Juz10

Talyn

Hey cohorts! First time, long time and all that. What is a game from your past that you are nostalgic for but don’t remember anything about. Mine is siphon filter. I know I played it and I feel like I played it a lot but I don’t remember a thing about it other than the glowey helmet. Are there any games you have a nostalgic for but don’t remember?

Ian Switaj

Hello Heroes of Hyrule. I don't have a particular question; I just wanted to express how happy I am -- and I'm sure a bunch of other people are -- to have been here supporting you guys long enough to finally hear Kyle talk about "Breath of the Wild 2". https://youtu.be/aSF_pXfteFY?t=8650

Nognaught

Hey Ben and the Outlaws, With the oncoming death of Waypoint (often seen as a north star of gaming journalism), the latest in a long line of video game cites being shuttered, i think its a relevant time to reflect on the current state and purpose of video game critique. As SEO and Adsense optimisation undercuts and disincentivises thoughtful critique, do you see a way forward for written journalism in gaming, is there a new north star, or set of principles and practices for journalists to strive for?

Kaizoku Risu

If you had the chance to attend a sing-along showing of any Disney animated musical, which would you choose?

Paul

Hey Minnmax, With the news that the Super Mario Bros movie has surpassed 1 BILLION DOLLARS, it seems likely that Nintendo will make further forays into using its IP in other media. Now it may seem unlikely, but as a remote future possibility, would you rather get a new F-Zero game, or an F-Zero movie? Personally, I would absolutely watch an F-Zero movie IF the Wachowski's directed it. Love and support, Paul from Winnipeg

Virgil B

Playing the Street Fighter 6 demo has me believing it could be my game of the year. And the upcoming open beta announcement has me over the moon excited. If Street Fighter 6 doesn’t make fighting game fans out of new players, is it a success? What if only their core audience appreciates it? What can Street Fighter 6 do to make the jump from best fighting game of the year to just being the best game of the year?

LB

Hey minnmax show. Do you think you could stand up and deliver in a hallmark movie? Like lead in it. Love the show.

Mark Polley

G'day all, this one has been bugging me for years. In most horror games you will fight a boss, and after taking some damage the boss will transform into some grotesque monster, with flailing limbs and tendons. Do you think this is a one way process? Or can they revert somehow? Its quite a commitment dontcha think?! What if they had dinner plans! In the new RE4 remake some bosses even transform before taking any hits, just immediately commiting to a lifetime of being a gross fiend at the first hint of danger. Unless of course they know they can transform back. Anyway, love the show! Mark (from Wales, UK)

MickManga

Hiya MinnMax. It's a simple question but what game soundtrack do you think you've listened to the most? For myself it's either Chrono Cross or Donkey Kong Country.

Quaznarg

Hello internet weirdos. If you could time travel and see what one of your coworkers would be like when they were eight, who would you want to see?

EnragedPlatypi

Hi MinnMax crew and special guest Jenna! Last week the cohort talked about receiving, and trying to deal with, negativity online. Personally, being even remotely accessible or familiar to the internet community seems like a nightmare. Given that your job inherently exposes you to hateful, entitled, or even just disrespectful and disapproving language (and often much much worse if you’re a woman), what drives you to stick with it?

Evin Watson

MinnMaxShow! First time. Long time. I know this team is full of Blankies so my question comes from the shared fandom. I slept on the Steve Jobs movie when it was released but finally watched it for the podcast. That screening led to my first audiobook, the full Isaacson biography. Really compelling. Highly recommend. Are there any biographies you recommend or want to read/have be written? Gaming or otherwise? My takeaway from the Jobs book is a good biography isn’t just about the impact of the subject, they must be a compelling character. Something I learned about Jobs: he cried in a lot of meetings!

SideEye Bro

Hello MinnMax, If you could give 200 million budget to remake an indie game what would that game be?

noonrisekingdom

Hey Spin Stacks, I’ve read multiple previews for Tears of the Kingdom talking about the cumbersome controls. How will you be playing? I personally am a handheld kind of person but am considering playing exclusively with a pro controller just so I don’t have to worry about the fiddly controls and small buttons. Any recommendations?

RabidLime

Dear Ben, YAAAAAAY FOR BEN!!! sincerely, RabidLime

Derek Greenwood

Dear best new parasocial buds, What are some unwritten rules when it comes to the question bucket? Things that some people might not think about as a listener. Are there any definite no-nos? BBBBONUS QUESTION: Best anime intro theme Thanks, Kholdstare aka Derek from Ottawa
