MinnMax has got Babymannia! (two N's) What's the best 'baby' in video games?

AlexTheSnood

Hi Minnimus Maximus. Question: For those who have played, what is the most criminal thing you’ve done in TotK so far? So far, I stole an egg from a farmer in Hateno Village and felt bad about it 😢

Nick McGrath

Really leaving us in suspense on what you'll be talking about, huh?

Forest Lassman

What a game that made you look at the real world differently? I've been playing a bunch of Zelda and now I'm looking at ceilings wondering if I could ascend through them

SlyCut

Hello all, Due to Earth's rotation, the surface of the planet moves at roughly 1,000 MPH. What do you think would happen if Earth's rotation instantly stopped? Would we even feel it? Would we all just stumble or fall over? Or would we all go flying 1,000 MPH into a wall?

Palo

Coffee, tea, energy drinks, caffeine pills? All of the above, none of the above? What's your caffeine routine, how do you get your fix? I've been a coffee person since I was a teen and I've never really tried to branch out, any recommendations?

Kraven Morcome

What is the least satisfying dish to wash and, follow up question, why is it the strainer?

Matthew Byerwalter

Hi MinnMax. What was one of the earliest times something in a game made your jaw drop? For me it was during the last boss of Earthbound where (spoilers) the name you entered for yourself as the player is used when the game slowly reveals it as your own prayers for Ness and the team are what deal the final blow to Giygas. I just think that's so cool and a great way to make the player invested. Do y'all have anything from way back when that has stuck with you?

Will Turner

When was the last time you ate a bologna sandwich, and if you had to eat one today what would you put on it?

Ryan M

Ben: based on knowledge gained only from video games, what are the do's and dont's for raising a child?

Strange Sloth

Who is the most fashionable video game character? Not the best design for a character. More specifically, a character that gets up every morning puts on their clothes and looks good. My vote goes to Bayonetta.

thejjuan1

Hello minnmax gang. So should we keep Leo Vader away from online games? Blood hunt just announced it’s stopping development, but the servers will be staying on. ( for now) I really like meet your maker and I want the game to live on more then a year.

Patrick G

If there was a daily item/task you could Recall to make life easier what would it be? I think playing darts or golfing would be easier to practice

BEEFCAKE

Hey everyone! if you could have a sandwich appear in front of you, what would be on it? Sorry I’m hungry. It’s the only thing I can about

whitemex

Do you have any cool scars?

gybones

What’s your favorite game show on TV? I can see the people behind the show Lingo punching the air after seeing how popular Wordle became (also, did you know the creater of Wordle is named Josh Wardle?)

Dan from Canada

Escalators. You walking up these or standing?

Conner McCabe

Hi Ben, Sarah, Janet, Jacob, and Mark! What’s your go to fast food for long drives / road trips? I recently made a 5 hour drive for a weekend and realized that I always drive thru a Carl’s Jr., get a famous star meal with a medium Coke Zero, and enjoy the ride. It’s a nice little comfort treat for a lengthy trip. Do you all have go to’s for this sort of thing? Do you just take what you find? Do you fast while you drive fast? Hope you’re all well!

Swedish pagan

Ben Hanson having a kid AND running Minnmax?! More like Ben not enough hands.... son.(pause for laughter) Anyway, here is my question. If you had the fuse ability from Tears of the kingdom here in reality, how would you use it? What odd creations would you make? Thanks for all the cool content!

SenttheProphet

I am still in shock over Phil Spencer’s stance that great games would not push Xbox sales Tears of the Kingdom is absolutely pushing switch sales. I luckily own a PS5 and a Series X, and I went out the door right away to buy a switch after seeing the reviews. If Starfield was incredible (in a crazy hypothetical, even better than Tears), it would absolutely push folks to get a Series X. Yes it could be played on PC, but there is a solid console segment Games sell consoles. People want consoles to play certain games. Not just a machine that can play all games, that’s a PC. I heavily disagree with Phil’s stance and I think will be looked upon as the strategy killer to Xbox. Halo!! Gears!!! Exclusives sell

BearCommando

I keep hearing people say “I now understand why TotK took so long”, but is it time to reframe its development timeline? It was announced as “now in development” in 2019, and probably lost 6 months at the onset of the pandemic, so that’s only a 3.5 year development cycle. Seems reasonable for a AAA game and I’m impressed with the result.

Jason Wojnar

Is there a game or character that always reminds you of a specific song? For example, everytime Rosalina pops up I can't help but sing the chorus to Bruce Springsteen's "Rosalita" but using her name instead. Same thing goes for Ghost Recon Wildlands and his song Badlands (again, singing "Wildlands" instead of Badlands"

Garrett Wainstock

I miss Bond moments from the 007 series. Emergent gameplay be damned. In what games should developers cram unique, scripted sequences that are immediately rewarded with a jingle and a check mark?

Jarell Pryor

Hey CLCs, I finally caved and bought a Switch last week. Been loving it so far, especially for "couch handheld" gaming! (Olli Olli World is great! Thanks for hyping it up, Janet!) I haven't been up-to-date on Switch game reviews. But now I'm super curious about which games are best played docked and which just feel better handheld. Is that play "context" something you all specifically keep track of when recommending Switch games? Or do you find it varies too much person-to-person? Thanks! Oh and congrats on the baby, Ben!

Zane Dukes

Good whenever CLCs! I am loving TotK, but it has highlighted a big pet peeve of mine. Why do I have a limited “sprint” that makes me go from slower to slow!? Like, who plays Mario without holding down the run button the whole time? Am I being impatient, or do video game characters move too slowly?

Christian Jimenez

Hey Chuckle heads, Do you have a favorite comedian? Heard Ben mention Ray Romano in Party Chat and to me his underrated. Eveybody loves Raymond was something I grew up with so maybe there's a soft spot, but his other show, Men of a Certain Age was really good imo. Thanks!

ChrisKRool

Hi MinnMax Crew! As I’ve been playing Tears of the Kingdom one little touch made me reflect on how important of a visual cue it is to the player: the question and exclamation marks above an enemy’s head when they spot you. It made recall when I first saw this used to convey “stealth” mechanics in games, such as Metal Gear Solid, and how important yet simple of a tool it is to the player. It’s now used in countless games, and an understood piece of “gaming visual language” that’s commonplace today. This gets to my question: Does the panel have any other “visual tools” or tiny mechanics that they find are so widely influential and used in games today? Bonus points if you can recall what game you remember seeing it originally in. Stay Zesty!

Luca Alberti

Hello everyone and Mark! Following the release of Tears of the Kingdom, a critically acclaimed title with a prominent puzzle element, I was wondering how play time is handled at Enhance: do people gather to play together or is it mostly an individual experience?

Catpurrnicus

Hello crew, I recently played VR at Sandbox VR and noticed all their games are hyper violent? Is this because the most popular games all involve shooting or maiming and they want to appeal to those gamers? Don't get me wrong, the game was fine and immersive, but it's not something I could share with younger and older people. Am I the only one who'd like an Escape Room, Kart Racer, digital story to participate in? I feel if Nintendo let you play Luigi's Mansion with high end VR it would be very popular. Or have a DnD campaign where then DM could change your environments and what you're looking. I know this crew isn't that into VR, but is it because the use of it has been implemented so terribly?

Caleb Ward

Hey everyone! I was struck by a curious thought earlier this week when considering how much time reviewers are having (or getting) to dedicate to TOTK. Are reviewers usually compensated for the hours spent playing the games they review? That seems like a tricky line between work and literal play. Are there different approaches to game time compensation at different media companies and if so, what do you think is the best solution?

Alex

Hey crew, why are video games expensive?

Aron Roberts

On a scale of 1 to I'm-playing-all-the-previous-games-and-building-plastic-model-kits-right-now, how excited are you for Armored Core VI??

Bryan Tylec

Hey folks, I don't actually have a question. I just wanted to say that I am really looking forward to playing TotK and listening to the Deepest Dive on it...but that's not gonna happen anytime soon because right now I am far too invested in the story, characters and gameplay of Horizon: Forbidden West. And I'm gonna drag that out right up until about when people stop talking about TotK. I'm talking about doing every side quest, exploring every landmark, talking to every NPC multiple times and NEVER using Fast Travel to do it. And when I'm at the final mission, I'm gonna walk from one end of the map to the other, saying goodbye to the Forbidden West, before I complete it. I know this is petty as hell but I don't care. It feels good and I highly recommend that everyone embrace their petty nature at least once in their miserable lives.

micspam

Imagine: Its Thursday morning, you wake up, and something feels off. You walk into the bathroom, and to your horror when you glance over at the mirror you discover that overnight you've grown fur everywhere and to make things worse you've even got werewolf-like features now. As any kids-focused horror entertainment has taught us, *obviously* you can't show anyone or ask for help, because that would be embarrassing. How long do you think you would be able to hide your face from the world, and who would be the first person to "catch you"?

Victor Garcia

Hi, everyone. Two part question here. If MinnMax were an anime, which voice actor would you want to play you in the English dub? Also, what color would you want your hair to be? Or would you be boring and stick to your normal hair color?

JeffM's Backlog

I recently ran into a guy that was a spitting image of Shan Yu from Mulan, and it reminded me of how good of a villain he was. What's a villain from your childhood that still makes the hair on the back of your next stand up?

MakeItUnclear

As we know, Breath of the Wild is the greatest game of all time, as declared objectively by GQ. But let's say Tears of the Kingdom winds up having a better claim for that spot when all is said and done. What's your philosophy on adjusting the rankings? Should TotK be #1 and everything else simply drop a spot? Should it replace BotW all together, or should BotW drop out of the top 5 or 10 so one franchise isn't monopolizing the top spots? Should everyone stop caring about ranking games and just enjoy the experience for its own sake?

Brian W

What was the first thing you looked up on the internet? Back in the olden days when we just got dial up working in home I remember looking up Mario kart 64. I then printed out pictures of the character select screen. It was so magical

Thom Blackburn

Hi Minnmax Folx, Where do people get off when saying "no pun intended" but then immediately say a pun? Can you think of any other common phrases that are OUTRIGHT LIES?! Have a lovely day, Thom Blackburn

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and Friennds, What quip from a game has made its way into your gaming lexicon? For me it’s the classic “And baby makes 3” from Ghost Recon Wildlands

Troy Ellison

Hello MinnMax! I'm what you may call a "Joe Juba stan". How is he doing?

Alex Britt

Hi MinnMaxx w/ two N's and X's! I went ahead and broke down GQ's Top 100 Video Games list by the year because i wanted to know what was the best year in gaming. Can you guess the top 3 years based on number of games that made the top 100 list? 2016 - 8 (#89 Hitman, #88 The Last Guardian, #80 Fire watch, #64 Persona 5, #56 Inside, #55 Hollow Knight, #53 Dishonored 2, #49 Stardew Valley) 2007 - 6 (#92 Mass Effect, #71 COD 4: MW, #45 Halo 3, #40 Super Mario Galaxy, #35 Portal, #23 Bioshock) 2001 - 6 (#99 Rez, #61 GTA 3, #54 Ico, #51 FFX, #37 Silent Hill 2, #21 Halo) Interestingly enough, these years with the most top games did not contain any games from the top 20(two tens). No single year had more than 2 from the top 20(two tens). Thanks! Alex Britt

RickyWinterborn

Hello cohorts, I saw a VR app that lets you fill up a virtual arcade with any cabinets you want and wander around playing them. do you think in the future virtually collecting video games is a viable way to scratch the itch without the need for space or exorbitant cost or does it defeat the purpose of collecting if it's not physical?

Cath

Here’s another instance of what is your Minn (worst thing) and Max (best thing) about these games: 1- Dragon Age:Inquisition 2- Cult of the lamb 3- Hades 4- Donkey Kong 64 5- Wii sport

Dusty Beaman

What is the most embarrassing moment you have had on stream/recorded? Do you think it will be surpassed in the future?

Chandler

What's the right level of enthusiasm you want from your fans? You want people to be excited about the things you do, obviously, but when does it become too much? Is everything short of showing up at your front door welcome? Where is the line? And what do you do if a fan is crossing this line?

Bob Buel

Ya know that green goop in Tears of the Kingdom that Ultrahand uses to merge your stuff together? If I offered you $20 bucks to run a finger through that stuff and eat it, would you? And what do you think it would taste like?

Rikimaru

Hey gang! Salty snacks or decadent desserts? Why?

Josh LaBaw

I just preordered the Super Mario Movie Soundtrack on CD. I'm a 90's kid so CD felt familiar & right. What are your attachments to physical media? Do you wish for a day where the newest game console uses a cartridge reminiscent of an N64 cartridge but plays a fully modern game?

Fatt Mish

Hello people of Minnmax! Recently I had a dream where I got to meet Ben at a meet and greet (someday hopefully). But with that said, my question is, have any of you ever had a game or game industry related dream that was memorable in any way? Love the show! -Mars

Jeorin

Howdy MinnMax and friends, Have you ever experienced the Tetris effect? I've never had it from playing Tetris, but I experienced it after my time with The Witness. I would see circles everywhere and my brain would trace lines along every surface to them. Here's the wiki on the effect: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetris_effect

Sebastian Apolinario

Can you all share a spooky paranormal activity that you’ve experienced?

ChubbyAcorn

With Mark on the show this week we get a mini 8-4 Play reunion with him and Sarah! As a long time fan of 8-4 Play, games, Japan, and Japanese games, and a more recent supporter of Minnmax, I would love to see a Minnmax goes to Japan travelogue which, among other things, could have Sarah revisiting her old stomping grounds and guesting on the 8-4 Play podcast. Maybe a future Patreon goal, if Patreon goals weren’t been eliminated?

Greg Mahan

Hello MinnMax! Given the discussions on spoiler sensitivity around Tears of the Kingdom, including on this week’s Party Chat, what would you all say is the worst you’ve ever been “spoiled” in regards to a piece of media?

Jerad Smith

Hello folks of MinnMax! First time supporter and first time show question. From this week's Party Chat discussion about Rapid Fire Questions at GameInformer, I happily remembered of one of Ben's first (possibly the very first) Rapid Fire interviews with Sean Murray about No Man's Sky. What gaming event sticks out to you as having a profound moment in the industry that made games reconsider how they demo, discuss, or show their upcoming game? Another example is the early gameplay of Alien Colonial Marine showed a much more polished and higher resolution version than what eventually shipped.

Modestbrock

Knowing a major game like TOTK is coming out and will most likely be a huge time commitment, do you do anything to prepare for the time suck?

Scobu

There has been a surge of great remasters and remakes lately and one game I was hoping might get a shiny makeover was Brütal Legend. Although I became sad when I realized that this may be extremely unlikely due to the number of licensed music tracks in the game. It could possibly be a huge headache for Double Fine to renegotiate for all of the original music again and they may run into a situation similar to Sonic 3 where, if they do manage to release it, they may have to substitute in far less memorable tracks due to licensing issues. Back in the day, developers probably didn't think much about re-releasing their game down the road when making it, but now that we have a history of porting games to new consoles to keep them available, as well as for the importance of preservation, do you think developers/publishers will take this into consideration when using licensed assets in their games in the future? P.S. Do you think Brütal Legend will be stranded on PS3/Xbox 360 for console gamers forever?

PhillyYeetSteak

Do any of you ever play games sarcastically? Sometimes me and my friends will play games together that none of us are interested in, like we recently played Bassmaster Fishing 2022 competitively for a night. We also got into Uno online this way.

Geoff Enright

Hey everyone and nemesis JeffM, So, everyone's switch is just a TotK machine now for the next month or whatever I'm guessing. What was the last game you remember having that kind of effect on one of your gaming machines? -Groffles

Victor Pham

Is there anything more frustrating that the problems that come from flying? Whether that's missing luggage, flight delays, or missed connections, it's just a hive of problems for people it seems.

Ari

Hi, Minnmax the nintendo DS had many games who’s subtitle started with the letter DS True or false, these are actual DS game titles Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow True Resident Evil: Doomed Survivor False Bleach: Dark Souls True Guitar Hero: Dueling Solos False Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits True Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword True Tenchu: Dark Secret True Elite Beat Agents: Defence Samba False Lunar: Dragon Song True Scribblenauts: Dictionary Solvers False Nintendogs: Dachshund Simulator False Mario Kart: Drifting Stars False Advance Wars: Dual Strike True Cooking Mama: Duck Soup False Peggle: Dual Shot True Trauma Center: Diarrhea Surgeon False

Jeff

Hey! Cohorts! New! Patron! Here! With Minecraft Legends coming and going without much fanfare, I’m wondering what other Minecraft spin-offs you’d like to see? A musou (Minecraft Warriors?!?) and/or a 3D platformer (like Sackboy’s Big Adventure) seem like pretty decent ideas to me. Thanks, and hope you’re well!

Stephen Mince

Hello everyone, Please let Jacob Geller know that a student of mine cited Jacob’s “The Men Who Couldn't Stop Crying, and Other Unbearable Realities” in a research paper about Death of a Salesman. He got an A. So if you weren’t sure of this already, Jacob and Minnmax’s audience extends to high schoolers. Do you feel like you take age demographics into consideration when you’re planning content?

SlickJames

Hi Minnmax crew. I was recently watching the new Netflix Powers Rangers special where they brought back some of the old cast. It was purely for nostalgic reasons, but it was so bad and cheesy that when my girlfriend was about to walk into the room, I quickly changed it because I was embarrassed for her to see me watching it. My question to you is, has there ever been anything you've watched or played that you were embarrassed to admit to your partner?

Adam Rostan

Hey everybody. I hope you’re all having a great day, a great podcast, and feeling strong. Tears of the Kingdom is turning heads but I most likely won’t be playing it this year. Or even in the next 18 months. I finally bought a Switch last October and have been making my way through some of the great knockouts of the console’s life I heard talked about on this and other podcasts (Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Shin Megami Tensei V to name a few) but I finally started playing Breath of the Wild this week! And I’m loving it! But I can’t help feeling like there’s a small, empty space where conversations around the game would have been. The fomo for TotK is real but I’m content to explore Hyrule. Absent of those conversations while relishing what bowled people over in 2017. Waiting to do it all over again some day for 2023. What’s a game you were late to the party on where you feel your experience would have fundamentally changed if you were playing it alongside others? Whether that’s the act of play or the convos around it. - AJ

Jared Piers

Hey Minnmaxers, I have a small game for you. Can you name a game that splits the opinion of the rest of the hosts so that half of them think the game is good and half think it's bad? In other words, name the most polarizing game. If you want to go crazy, you could include the audience with a twitch poll too.

Kenny Estes

If a The Legend of Zelda movie get made, what would you like to see included in the movie, like characters beyond the main 3 (Link, Zelda, & Ganon), a gameplay element, a game's story being adapted, or something else.

Shawn Mills

Is the fart joke in Hakuna Matata from the Lion King the greatest fart joke in history?

James Pies

This one is for Mark "Gaming Jesus" MacDonald. Congratulations on the launch of Humanity! What were some of the challenges of launching a new IP like this one versus releasing a title with a well known name like Tetris Effect? Also many golf claps for having the confidence to release so soon after a certain other title that shall not be named. I've been a listener of the 8-4 Play podcast for years now and can't wait for the Patreon launch so I can maybe write in questions there instead of using a MinnMax middleman.

Adam

Hi Sarah! So what does a Social Media & Marketing Manager do, exactly? I mean I think I understand the general concept of the job more or less, but I can't quite picture what a typical day actually looks like.

Kaizoku Risu

Have you learned any new words lately?

D M

There has been a lot of talk of AI in the news lately - I think developers are going to claim that their games' AI will use ChatGPT and similar for more robust gameplay experiences. Do you have any memories of particularly good AI in games? Does better AI equate to better gameplay? what if the AI becomes too smart, will I feel bad for killing them eventually? Also - I think that they will use AI as an excuse for always online connectivity - and I am not excited about this.

Virgil B

What are some surprisingly scary moments you’ve had in games? I remember getting terrified in The Sims. Even now, hearing the Burglar theme makes my skin crawl.

Pelicanman

Looking at Tears of the Kingdom reviews, is the groupthink around reviews of the year’s biggest games a problem? Whenever a huge release drops (ToTK, Elden Ring, God of War, etc.), every review is somewhere between a 9 and 10. We know that inevitably there’ll be people who don’t love these games, but that perspective is reflected nowhere in reviews. The rationale we usually hear is that it’s because fans of the series are assigned to the review, but why should that always be the case? Wouldn’t it be more helpful if there were allowed to be some outlier reviews?

Ryan Thomas Reynolds

What are some non-horror games that gave you the spooks as a kid? For me it was Ico - those shadow people and the music that accompanied them really unsettled me!

Omega Ranking

Hey all, with the release of humanity it poses the important question. What is the greatest dog in video games? Also thanks to Janet for recommending "A Little Wordy" a few podcasts back. It's a game my Wife and I play most nights now.

Matt Rogers

Hey everyone, have you ever gotten into a podcast later in its life and attempted to go back and listen to all of the episodes? I recently caved in and started listening to Blank Check and decided to start from the beginning. I’m currently still in their Star Wars era and loving it!

Hunter Sax

I've been wondering, considering the universal popularity, appreciation or just curiosity about Zelda the world has right now, is Zelda the Beatles of video game franchises? Just sheer universal acclaim and at bare minimum appreciation. I'm not a big Zelda or Beatles person, but they're both undeniable.

William Caraker

Hey CLCs, I was curious what advice you would give to someone that wants to engage in the community or any online community more? I love this community so much but engaging in the discord and commenting even on this post has some kind of weird mental block for me. Has that ever happened to you all? Any advice? Thank you!

God's Garage

Hey Ben H. and son, and the CLC’s Sorry for the wordy question but its good I promise. Every once in a while there is a game that comes out that feels like an event. When a game like Elden ring, botw, or totk releases. breaks out of our little social gaming sphere and becomes a phenomenon. These are games I like to call “time and place” games, Because the launch of these games become a time stamp for that point in your life. For perspective (and to celebrate a betterquest goal) Botw released when I was in high school, and Totk released the day before I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree this past weekend. What are some “time and place” games for you? Thanks!

Jonathan Haile

I’ve been scratching my noggin, what are some video game mechanics that seemed like they would be big but never saw the light of day after one day? For me in LA Noire’s facial reading system, I thought this would pioneer a wave of detective/mystery games. Imagine a AAA Sherlock Holmes game where you explore a densely packed city and solve complex where crimes that you require you to think, analyze, decide what happened while dealing with the conquenses. Just a thought.

Blazingscourge

Hey Minnmaxers, do you have any fan fiction-y ideas you have thought extensively on for a sequel to your favorite game? For example, I’ve an idea for a Persona game where the big end mystery involves a high school reunion, something similar to the plot of It(book/movie).

Shakenbake67

Hey Minnmaxers! Nicholas Cage just got announced that he’s coming to Dead by Daylight……what!?!?! My question to you is what celebrity would you want in a game(any game)? I know self touted celebrity lover Ben Hanson is jumping at this question

Devon Pieper

Hi MMers! In recent years, we've seen a big push in the industry to remove crunch and from the development process of games. So why haven’t we seen that in the games press? Zelda: TotK is no short game and journalists are putting 60-70+ hours into it in one week to make deadlines. You often hear how most time spent playing the games are at home, off the clock. So why are writers and content creators exhausting themselves for a few extra clicks?

Michael Kammeyer

Hey y'all, hope you're doing well! Do any of you take notes or keep a journal about games you play? As someone who has trouble with focusing and managing my time I've been working on keeping lists for my work, chores, and hobbies, and only recently started applying it to games that I play. I mark down goals I want to accomplish in game and cross them off as I go, or I just write down things that I achieved. So far it seems to help me stay excited about new games and give myself an extra sense of progression, especially in non-linear or sandboxy games. Do you have any other methods you use to enhance your gaming experience?

Ben Shively

Jacob, can you explain to everyone why they should stop playing Zelda and go play The Darkness 2 instead?

Timothy Smith

You are tasked with picking the art style for the new Zelda movie! What entry in the franchise do you take inspiration from? Do you got Wind Waker? Breadth of the Wild/TotK? Something grittier like Twilight Princess?
