Is it easier to enjoy a bad show or movie than a bad game?

Travis in Fargo

Recently, my brother in law teased me because I was cooking a pot of soup when it was 90° outside. What are your beliefs regarding weather/temperature-related eating? Sometimes I just want a nice bowl of soup or chili in the summertime.

Alex Britt

What is your favorite game mechanic/trend that kind of sucked and has faded away? Time limits on everything, high scores, random battles?

Shakenbake67

Recently I just saw a tweet that boasted that AC mirage will be “3x shorter than AC Valhalla” and while I do understand the context, I find that to be the weirdest marketing message I have ever read My question to you, what is the weirdest marketing message you have seen/read while covering games? Keep up the good work guys the content has been amazing!

Travis in Fargo

What city or region of the US has not yet been featured prominently in a video game, but is due for it? I live in Fargo, ND, and I think it could handle a video game adaptation of some sort - at the very least because of the connection to the movie and series of its namesake.

Jarell Pryor

Hey folks, As far as controllers go, is dpad on the left the *correct* choice? Or just the choice we are now all used to? Happy August!

Kevin Kennedy

How much Hanson could a Ben Hanson Hasnson, if a Ben Hanson could Hanson Hanson?

Blazingscourge

You’re tasked with turning a video game into a broadway musical. What video game would you choose?

Matthew Byerwalter

What's your favorite summer meal side dish? I feel like homemade pasta salad is the ideal companion to something hot off the grill. Also not opposed to a nice potato salad or some corn on the cob

Conner McCabe

Hi Kyle, Janet, Kyle, and Jenna! What is your all time favorite gaming snack? As summer is rounding the corner I can’t help but think of my favorite blissful summer memories as a youngin’ and one thing that sticks out most are the snacks I would have while playing games. For me, my all time favorite snack combo was a bowl of gold fish crackers and a can of Diet Coke. The cheesy/salty crackers paired so well with the crispy cold diet cokes during the summer. Can you recall a stand out gaming snack past or present?

Joe McMartin

I recently played God of War 2018 and mentioned to my friends I didn't enjoy the beginning because you are forced to block a ton. I stated to them, I actively try to avoid blocking in all games at all times. For example, I don't think I ever blocked in Eldin Ring or TOTK. Even in turn based RPGs I will never select the defend/block option. My friends think I am crazy. Am I crazy?

Chandler

Hi jkjk, If you had to swap hair with one of the other three people on the podcast who would you choose? It's a magic swap. Their top of head becomes your top of head exactly. Don't overthink it

Stark

What is the best game to play on an airplane?

Ziggy Hixson

Hey Minnmax, What’s a food that you think you specifically have the best shot of winning an eating contest for? For example, I feel like I can eat easily 3 times more peanut butter than the average person in 1 sitting. Thanks!

SlyCut

What's the longest book you've ever read?

Brett Thomas Miro

I think the Greatest Summer Game of All Time, as defined by it best being played in the summer/feeling like summer is Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. The game just nails the island/summer vibes and the great sense of adventure. I feel growing up, summer was this time of freedom and discovery; when you were off from school and the weather was warm and you would explore and get into hijinx and little adventures with your friends. I grew up and live on Long Island, NY so the ocean, the beach and boats were ever present. Wind Waker represents all of that for me.

Kraven Morcome

Hey MinnMax, What is the most you've spent on a game and related merchandise? I pre-ordered the collectors edition of spiderman 2 that comes with the statue and I also bought the new Hot Toys 1/6th scale figures for both Peter and Miles. With tax and shipping that's about $900. As James Franco once said in Spiderman 2 "I have nothing left ... except Spiderman."

RabidLime

when reviewing and whatnot, how aware or conscientious are you on recency bias? a website i frequent has an annual top 100 games games of all time and over the past couple years i've watched Outer Wilds slip from #1, to #8, to #17... meanwhile, in its rookie year, PowerWash Simulator nearly cracked the top 10 ¯\_ಠ_ಠ_/¯ i totally get that these lists are opinions and puff pieces, and imo impossible to put together as tastes and times change. but, even on the level of goty, how much do you take recency bias into account?

Rodrigo Aoun

Hey MinnMax show : do you guys ever like associating two pieces of completely unrelated media ? Drawing parallels and the like ? I was recently watching Better Call Saul and between the harsh desert, the 70%drama to 30% humor ratio, and the quirky all-american no-gooder characters, I couldn't help put it side by side in my mind with Red Dead Redemption (or GTA). Just the other day, I was (re)playing Mario Galaxy and when going through the final stage, I heard a piano that made me think of none other than Kingdom Hearts. Then the game ends and (spoilers) Mario wakes up, as if from a dream (Kingdom Hearts vibes, again!). When he rises, he sees that all the worlds he has gone through have come together. Again, Kingdom Hearts. I don't think there's anything real to it, of course, but in that way, I always enjoy drawing parallels between unconnected things and see if I gain new or broader understanding from it, thematic resonance and the like. Am I alone in doing this or do you guys do it as often as I do ? If yes do you have any that come to mind ?

This isn't really a question, but the conversation about Star Trek a couple of weeks ago bummed me out. Everything that was said was very fair: the franchise has been pretty inaccessible for a long time, and jumping in at this point would feel exhausting. That said, if you have even a PASSING interest in science fiction, Strange New Worlds is incredible, and is the most accessible and watchable Star Trek series since...maybe ever. An incredible and charismatic cast and great writing that doesn't trade on inside jokes and prior knowledge. And best of all, it strikes a hopeful and optimistic tone that a lot of science fiction has been lacking lately. I really do urge you to take Strange New Worlds for a test drive -- it's genuinely one of the best shows on television right now and it makes me sad that Star Trek's long standing baggage is keeping people from jumping in.

Hi Minnmax, During Oppenheimer I actually got up to use the bathroom during the first third of the movie. This is I think the second time I have done this in my 29 years of living. The first time I did was during the 2014 Godzilla movie because I hated it so much I just didn't care about missing any of the movie. This time my bladder was telling me there was no way I was making it through this without peeing. Do you often get up to use the restroom during a movie or do you hate doing it? If you have to go do you try to stick it out as long as possible?

Dan from Canada

What is an obvious sequel/prequel/spin-off something you love that you have not experienced ? How come?

PoorAndCurly

Hey gang, At what point is produce/fruit no longer viable? Are you a throw it out with a single small bruise kinda person? Or do you still cook that zucchini when a quarter of it is moldy?

Tyler Steele

Hey everyone! I just started Tears of the Kingdom and, even though $70 is a new, higher price point, I can't help but feel like I would pay much more for the privilege of playing that game. So I thought it would be fun for each guest to reflect on how much they, in retrospect, value the experience of past releases. For example, maybe Kyle B values The Walking Dead Season 1 at $12 while Kyle H values it at $200, etc etc. Here's a quick list of games to see their true value: - Minecraft - Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Rocket League - Portal 2 - Assassin's Creed Origins - Pokemon Go - Red Dead Redemption 2

Jonathan Valdez

I hope we can get a nice variety of people in the Kyle episodes and nobody ends up on every episode

Cody Allison

What game do you think is best suited to be played in a blanket fort? My favorite summer game is Animal Crossing on the gamecube. I had many fun summers with my siblings and cousin waking up early, going for a swim in the pool, and when we got tired we went to our cool, dark basement, built a mega blanket fort that stayed up for weeks at a time. We hauled in a small tv and the GameCube and ran extension cords to the nearest outlet. We each had a character in the village and would just trade off who got to play while the other's watched or played other games on our handhelds. So ask your inner-child. if you could build a sweet, cozy blanket fort with any game available to be played in it today. what would you play?

Mike Lynch

If you could have a modern composer orchestrate a soundtrack to your daily life, who would it be and why? (This would be 7/24/365. It can be an orchestral, movie, or video game composer.)

Seabass

Hey all, Any chance we can get a Hanson Baby update? Hoping everything’s going good for the new parents!

Stevelution

You can only eat one type of fast food item for the rest of your life. What are you picking? I’m going pizza. Even when it’s trashy it’s still good.

Geoff Enright

Hey Minnmax, So, do you want to play a game? I have a game called - Tag that Movie! Its pretty simple, you will be told the tagline to a movie and you have to guess the name of the movie. As we are going to keep this as easy as we can (since it is already pretty darn hard), the category will be all 2023 movies with a high domestic box office. Nothing esoteric. Here is the example: Tagline: It's-a Me! Answer: The Super Mario Bros. Movie Okay, so off we go! 1) Tagline: It's time to face the music. Answer: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 2) Tagline: The world forever changes Answer: Oppenheimer 3) Tagline: A legend will face his destiny Answer: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny 4) Tagline: The last ride Answer: Fast X 5) Tagline: Based on the incredible true story Answer: Sound of Freedom 6) Tagline: Opposites react Elemental 7) Tagline: She's everything. He's just Ken Barbie 8) Tagline: Be a part of her world The Little Mermaid 9) Tagline: Baba Yaga John Wick: Chapter 4 10) Unite or Fall Transformers: Rise of the Beasts -Groffles

Jonathan Anderson

I'm playing through Amid Evil right now and didn't realize until it was announced yesterday that there's an expansion coming out for it in I believe two weeks. Have you ever had a case where you got to a game in your backlog just in time for a major update or DLC?

Lamb Dance

Hey MinnMax. Can you think of something - a game, tv show, movie, or whatever - you don't care much for now but would have loved if it came out when you were a kid?

thejjuan1

Hello Minnmax crew and Dark Prince. This recent writers/actor strike got me thinking, what would happen if a strike like this would hit the gaming industry. Let’s say hypothetically the gaming industry stops making new games for a year or two. So no showcases, directs or summer game fests. No previews or even no reviews. What would Minnmax do for content? Talk about old games? Backlog eps? Will Ben finally play FF14? And what would happen to other outlets like IGN or gamespot without new games to cover?

Hello, Is Geoff Keighley bad at tweeting about death or am I overreacting? This week I saw a weird tweet from the official account of The Game Awards regarding the death of Paul Reubens. It read: “Iconic actor Paul Reubens, who played Pee-wee Herman has sadly passed away at age 70 from cancer. Paul contributed to video games through voice roles in Minecraft: Story Mode and Call of Duty Zombies.” The first part of that is normal, but the second half seems a little off. I brought it up to a friend, and was informed of their wild tweet about Angela Lansbury’s death: “Acclaimed actress Angela Lansbury, the voice of Mrs. Potts in Kingdom Hearts II, has sadly passed away at age 96.” Mrs. Potts in Kingdom Hearts II feels like a strange callback until you dig deeper and see his obituary tweets for Jerry Springer who was “featured in the Celebrity Deathmatch game for PS2” and Tina Turner who was “featured in the Xbox karaoke game LIPS, as well as SINGSTAR LEGENDS” There has to be a better way to tweet about deaths to people who follow The Game Awards, right? Thanks, Vincent L. Harrison Holt

Hey Minnmax, Seeing as the new Haunted Mansion movie came out this last weekend, what are your favourite theme park or amusement park rides? Why do you like them? Harrison

notweirder

Hey Minnmax Crew, simple question: do you have any cool signed items? If so, what's the story behind them?

Derek Achoy

What is the best and worst kind of muffin, and how deep is the gulf between them?

bizkiut (Nick S.)

What's the TV show that you want to get into, but for some reason you just can't? Mine is Dragon Ball. For some reason I always drop off quick.

PhillyYeetSteak

Hey Minnmax! I bought Venba after hearing so much praise about it and really loved it. It got me thinking about games and cooking, and what are your thoughts about all those game-themed cookbooks that have come out recently? Do you have interest in dishes inspired by something random like Street Fighter or Overwatch?

William K

What’s your favorite tv show opener?

What’s your favorite tv show opener?

Most switch owners probably don’t have pro controllers because they are expensive. Do you use joycons or switch pro controllers?

James Ford

Hello Ks and Js. Imagine this. You are listening to a podcast whilst doing an activity, when suddenly you have to go do something else that is not a podcast activity. When do you pause the podcast? Randonly mid sentence? Wait for a pause in topic/ conversation?

Tim Mattonen

Hey all, I have a question that I hope isn’t too personal. One that has been debated heavily amongst my friends in the past. But are you all supporters of science? Particular into the laws of gravity established by Sir Isaac Newton. Thus, for showering, do you primarily wash the upper half of your body, let gravity do its thing, and consider the soap that runs down to your legs, a thorough way for your legs to be clean. Or are you all anti science, and metaphorically slap Sir Isaac Newton’s in the face by always physically washing your legs? Thanks for reading.

Who's the cooler hang? Aunt Beru or Aunt May?

Hey Minnmax! Every new Nintendo system has a unique feature that sets it apart from others on the market (eg. 3D for the 3DS, both portable and docked mode compatibility for the Switch, etc). What do you anticipate will be the next game-changing feature that they will employ on their next system?

Derik Irelan

To go along with the great iam8bit prize, if you were a muppet, which would you be and why?

henrik mortensen

Hallo! Let's talk about concrete things in video games. I'm a little tired of so many games moving to 3D losing their charm and tangible look. I love Fire Emblem, but now when I play Fire Emblem: Engage I feel like it will never be the same as the animations and appearance of the characters in the games on the GBA. It was easy to see which characters were knights and mages in the old games, but in Engage I have to double check all the time because they just look like 3D blobs with too much detail/too little detail. And the battles in the old ones were beautifully animated and easy to understand, whereas now there are lots of different camera angles with lots of flashing lights. It's too much! And it is possible to do it well like Street Fighter 5 and 6 where they managed to transfer the 2D look to 3D without losing the charm and the animations. I must sound like an old man now. And I am. I'm 90! Hate your show

Malcolm Holliday

Hey Minnmax, with rumors of a Switch 2 coming out next year, what features and specs are you hoping for and expecting from it?

henrik mortensen

Hallo What to do when everyone loves something you hate? Should you say that to spoil the good vibes? I love Zelda above all movies, games and books and people.....So when Tears of the Kingdom arrived I was above hyped. My father was sending me links of people's reviews of the game, my brother loved it....but I didn't. I held it back for over a month to not kill the good feelings and hype around this important release. I wanted to love it, but I didn't. Have you been in the same situation? Hate your show

Cath

Hello!! I asked discord the question and now I’m asking you; could a vampire be allowed in your house with a warrant? (If it is about permission vs invitation could a birthday party invitation work? What if I wrote the birthday invitation to someone else birthday, would it work?)

Fatt Mish

Hi Minnmaxians! One of my favorite things in gaming is all the weird and hilarious surprises that can happen in games. Have any of you ever had a crazy glitch or odd event in a game that had you cracking up laughing or rolling on the floor with your friends or family. Peace, from Mars.

Duderado

Howdy! What's up with fighting real world critters in otherwise highly creative fantastical universes? I see enough spiders in real life, I don't want to see more of them in Final Fantasy or Diablo. The same goes with crabs, turtles, bees, etc. Can't we move on from these basic creatures being in every RPG? At least add a horn or extra foot and call it different name.

DubZe27

Hello Everybody! I'm wondering about how the enjoyment of video games is different than other media, or at least, more versatile. Growing up with older brothers, I spent a lot of summers watching other people play video games, and loving it. As an adult, this habit has continued, and it's been easy to see that other people love to watch games with the popularity of twitch. For instance, I watched Kyle play A Short Hike: loved it. Then I watched my fiancée play the same game; loved it even more. Now I feel like it is one of my favorite games, even though I've never played it. So, my question is, is this kind of enjoyment versatility uniquely possible with video games? And what are some of your favorite games that you've never played?

Patrick Hughes

Ahoy Dark Prince of Nerd Media and fellow entourage. As a new Nintendo console presumably dawns the near horizon next year, I reflect back to past consoles and their missed opportunities. Such as why 3DS never got Virtual Boy games added to it eShop or why Wii-U never got Four Swords Adventures (or other such GBA-link cable games). My question for you - What do you foresee being the biggest missed opportunity of the Nintendo Switch when all is said and done for this console? Cheers! (And kudos to whomever defended Super Mario Sunshine as the Greatest Summer Game of All Time)

Shawn Mills

Kyle mentioned he has been watching Claim to Fame on last week's episode. My wife loves terrible reality TV and she asked me to write in and recommend an even worse show from this summer called Stars on Mars. In it "celebrities" have to live in Australia but pretend they are on a Mars base where they have to complete various missions. Celebrities are eliminated seemingly at random and on some episodes new celebrities are added for no reason. There is no announced prize for the winners and the show is hosted by 92 year old William Shatner.

Derek Jackson

Ahroy crew! I was wondering your take on the recent trend but for gaming. Which scenario would you choose You will win 10 million dollars, but you have to beat Malenia in Elden Ring with no assists + you get 30 attempts Or You win 1 million dollars and you have to beat the entire game (not NG+) and you can only die 300 times

Edo

Hello to all! With Anita Sarkeesian announcing the end of Feminist Frequency, I watched again some of the Tropes vs Women (TvsW) in Video Games episodes and reflected on how my views on the treatment of women representation in games have changed since I first saw them years ago. Do you remember your initial reaction to the TvsW series? And, did the series impacted your perception of women representation in videogames? If so, how?

Brian W

What’s your favorite month to game in? Something about October just feels like good gaming to me.

Luca Alberti

Hello dark prince of nerd media and minnmaxers. I recently got around to playing The Messenger and was blown away by the soundtrack, I'm talking bop after bop! What are some games soundtracks you find yourself going back to or that surprised you?

Knobby Buckles (Dave)

Hello co-horts! I loved the first three episodes of the Tears of the Kingdom Deepest Dive, but I've put off finishing it so long that I am not ready for the last episode. I did have one question that has been in the back of my mind ever since I started playing Breath of the Wild - how much would having the hookshot rule in these games? Is there any other Zelda staple that you wish were in BotW/TotK? Rock and roll, Dave

Titanium

Longtime listener & recent Patreon! Keep up the great work guys - & Kyle Boseman was such a great addition. I hope he comes back to the panel. What job do you think you guys would do if you DIDN'T do what you do?
