On last week’s podcast, Hanson mentioned his father totally mangling the ending of 1984, where they overthrow the oppressive society but build one just like it. That’s definitely not the plot of 1984, but it IS the plot of Orwell’s other extremely famous novel Animal Farm, which is also highly worth reading!!

Stark

What studio closure do you think has had the biggest ripple effects on the games industry as a whole?

Connor

Hi team, This question isn’t about games, but something I think you can all relate to. I’m currently struggling a lot financially in my life, and am genuinely worried about how I’m going to pay my rent in the coming months. How do you all deal with stress related to money? Any coping mechanisms? Keep up the good work!

Pelicanman

Hey Ben, Last week, when you talked about your dad telling you the wrong ending of 1984, I’m pretty sure he was describing the plot of Animal Farm. On that note, what’s the best game where it turns out the heroes are actually the villains?

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and Friennds, What game did you get into at the perfect time to make the most of it? There was a lull in game releases I was interested a couple years ago which gave me the time to put 120 hours into AC Valhalla. I don’t think if I started that journey at any other time I would have been able to enjoy it as much as I did.

Kevin Kuper

Hello all, Every few years it seems like we get two movies coming out around the same time with the same plot; the prestige and the illusionist or white house down and Olympus has fallen. I can't think of something like this happening in gaming, are there any you all can remember or what would that equivalent be in gaming? Cheers!

Vilis

Hey there Benny and The Mechs (that's supposed to be a reference to the current deepest dive, but moving on) Is Super Mario Wonder a Strand game? I know people have already made the Souls comparison, but you can build helpful signposts in the world which help you the player, they show up in other people's game, and there is a counter you can check to see how many people have used it. That's Death Stranding! All we need is a mission of Mario delivering 70 kg of Underwear to a Toad Geoff Keighley and we'll be in the same game!

Derek Achoy

Here are my dancing questions: - Do you like to dance? - Do you dance? - Are you a good dancer? - May I have this dance?

Modestbrock

Since you judge questions each week... what is the best question you have ever ask?

Travis in Fargo

What movie did you watch the most as a kid? For me it’s a tie between Clifford starring Martin Short and That Thing You Do

Victor Pham

What classic games would you like to see revived in the Making of Karateka format?

Andres

Hey all, Last time Sarah was on she mentioned that she plays magic the gathering. As someone who absolutely loves the game what format does she play? Any favorite types of decks? Any chance for some MTG related content? Maybe Sarah teaches the gang to play for New show+?

Mike Lynch

If a person didn't move their body for sixty years, would they wrinkle at all?

Sam Worms

Hey everyone! How do you use Discord? I feel like if I'm not constantly looking at the feed, the amount of content is super overwhelming. How do you keep up with it? What are some of your do's and don'ts?

Dan from Canada

Would you rather have a final boss that is a complete pushover which risks you never remembering the fight or a very challenging final boss that takes a long time and many tries and even some controller gripping and swearing, but ultimately leading to a likely memorable victory.

RabidLime

is there a story of you as a child that family still bring up no matter how long it's been? i accidentally locked myself in the bathroom in the middle of the night when i was 6 so i wrote a help note on some toilet paper using my mom's eyeliner pencil, slipped it under the door, and proceeded to make a bed out of towels. my aunts and uncles bring it up constantly. this happened 35 years ago.

NoWarpZones

What is something from the last 6 months that you are proud of?

Travis in Fargo

My ex-coworker would clip his fingernails at a breakroom table, which is obviously out of control. I would never do that, but sometimes I clip my fingernails while going for a walk, but I wonder if that’s weird. In your opinion, what are the acceptable places for clipping fingernails?

Jarell Pryor

Hey folks, Have you ever sold a vanilla version of a console to purchase a new special edition of it? It's so hard for me to justify financially, but man some of those designs are really cool! (Yes, this is about the Spiderman PS5.)

Malcolm Holliday

Hey MinnMax! How important are the aesthetics, tone and personality of a game when it comes to trying it out, skipping or purchasing?

Kraven Morcome

Hey MinnMax, Ben, last week you introduced the last segment as something we "prefer" to call Get a Load of This. This implies there is another name for this segment that you just don't prefer. What would that be?

Vincent L.

Has there ever been a party in a video game that actually looked fun? All of the night clubs in Mass Effect look miserable. The midnight fireworks at Carnival of Time in Majora’s Mask had more guards than attendees. The early game celebration in Baldur’s Gate 3 was a snoozefest. Is it even possible to make a party look fun in a video game?

Styster

Sea of Stars has an amazing title screen that made me pause and take it in before starting the game. Sometime about the combination of the music and the graphics really got to me. What's been your favorite title screens in gaming, and why?

BearCommando

Hey all, If the Switch 2 just has the power of a Steam Deck, would that be enough for the community at large to embrace it? Do you think Nintendo can get away with charging more than $350?

Duderado

Howdy crew, Are we currently sliving in the best era of RPGs? With games like Final Fantasy XVI, Baldur's Gate 3, Sea of Stars, and Starfield all releasing this year, there's something amazing for all types of RPG fans.

SlyCut

Hello all, I have a very important question... One hundred Ben Hansons versus a silverback gorilla. Who would win? This is a fight to the death of the gorilla or all of the Bens. The fight takes place in an open field. No weapons or armor allowed.

Keegan

Fins up, minnmaxers. Ben, you’re wrong about the NFT joke and I would like to know if the cohorts agree with me.

Braulio Martinez

Not so much a question but last week you were pointing out thay Starfield doesn't have ground to space travel and instead makes you go into a menu. You mentioned No Man's Sky but I demand justice for the Ubisoft gem Starlink: Battle for Atlas on Switch which in 2018 and on the Switch, could do what Starfield can't.

JeffM's Backlog

This podcast is being recorded on Starfield's release day and for years I've had it hammered into my head that I get Xbox exclusives on Day 1, at no extra cost. I've been anticipating this game for years and I'm so excited that the release day is finally here! The only problem is this sure as heck doesn't feel like Starfield's release day. Starfield released last week, just not on GamePass. You had to buy the deluxe edition of the game for $100 or pay $35 on top of your GamePass subscription to play it. Forza Horizon 5 had a similar release model, with a huge caveat that GamePass subscribers were INCLUDED in the early launch. This new Starfield release model is a big step back for GamePass subscribers and it bothers me a lot. It's starting to feel like the "Day 1 on GamePass" marketing line (which is still all over the GamePass site) is becoming a lie. To me, this whole thing becomes even more insidious when you realize that this particular release landed on Labor Day weekend, which surely factored into their decision to push back the GamePass release. And made it harder for GamePass subscribers to simply wait patiently for the GamePass release. So I pose a simple question to the panel. When was Starfield's release date?

Tom Brien

Hey cohorts, I realised this week that I like games with square tiles, but feel a deep, visceral panic when I see a hex grid. Is this a me-thing? Do other people see hexagons and feel joy?

Karim

Hello Minnmax, so many big AAA games have released this year that I fear it may have impacted the sales for games with smaller budgets and even forced games like Alan Wake 2 and Alone and the Dark to shift their release dates to ‘stand out more’. Good time therefore to play a game I’ve called ‘pretend publishers!’. Your job is to lock in the release date for an indie game in your favourite genre and fit it in the 2023 calendar (you can assume you knew the full 2023 release calendar). And remember its not just about avoiding the big AAA releases or similar games in the genre, but you also can’t release your game end of Dec because developers need a holiday too! Karim from London

MyNameIsDan

Hey friends, If you had to take a guess, what percentage of switch owners have actually played with their switch while at a party on an apartment rooftop? Do you think the rooftop, switch crowd will be heavily catered to (again) this time around with the "switch 2"? Thanks, Dan

Toke F.

Hello HuMinns. Last week marked back to school for me, I've chatted with people I haven't talked to since late April (because of Exams, summer, and life). But quickly we talked again like we weren't apart even for a weekend. My question is, have you ever reignited a friendship like you were never apart? BTW I 100% the newest Saints Row during summer break. And is currently griefing Volition.

Travis in Fargo

What’s your relationship with mayonnaise?

wittynicknamehere .

Hello, Minnmaxers. I've been waiting for Kelsey to be on the show again, to ask this. From a preservation stance, is there any value whatsoever to something like The Last Hope, that atrocious Last of Us ripoff which got a lot of attention for its shoddiness before being pulled from the Switch eShop earlier this summer? I know it's trash and doesn't add anything to gaming or the world at large, but I also recognize I'm unaware how wide a net we're trying to cast with game preservation. It technically existed as a game, so it's not like some canceled vaporware game. I'm curious if Kelsey can speak to whether anyone can or should care about preserving weird outliers like this, or if it's just good riddance.

Vincent Garcia

Hi! New patron chiming in. Do you have any experiences playing games where the circumstances or environment in which you played the game really elevated the experience? A few of mine, for example: My brother and I binge-played MGS4 when it first came out, slamming Starbucks store-bought Frappucinos and slowly coming to the realization at 3 am that the end of that game is a whole feature film... And more recently, after bouncing off Breath of the Wild HARD when it released, it's becoming an all-timer for me now as I play through it slowly and meanderingly with my five year old son, who became obsessed with Zelda after we played Windwaker together last year.

Jason Wojnar

Hi Minnmax, One time at a restaurant we were charged for waters that were set on the table before we even sat down (with no markers there for price, apparently a pretty normal thing for a lot of European restaurants). Because these waters were literally half of the bill, I kindly complained and the manager eventually let us not pay for the waters. Has complaining ever brought you good things? P.S. the whole interaction was in my second language, Ukrainian, so better quest goal completed I guess.

SuperCerberus

Hey cohorts, If you could explore a gaming industry multiverse where anything is possible, what alternate realities would you want to check out? For example, I’d love to see how different the Mass Effect trilogy would be in a universe where BioWare wasn’t purchased by EA and what Amy Hennig’s version of Uncharted 4 would look like.

Patrick Hughes

Ahoy MinnMax and crew. RPG's gift us with so many diverse and lovable characters to play as, but often limit us to select a small handful of them to play as in our party. I understand this is in part so we can handle the gameplay of managing a reasonably sized party and also perhaps to force the player to make compelling decisions / choices, but do you ever feel guilty for the characters that get left on the sidelines? What's your preferred handling of RPG's with large casts of characters?

Lilly S

Hi Minnmax! Since everyone has been talking about how Sea of Stars is sort of a cross between all of our favorite rpgs growing up, what is your most impactful rpg from childhood? Mine would be Lunar Silver Star Story and Grandia 2! Also can someone tell Kyle that the Completionist has a video that might have a hint for the rainbow conch, thanks!

Fred Dinovo

Alright 'horts You've played the game now it is time to decide... Which is better Starfield the game or Starfield the Xbox Controller?

LlorchDurden

Regarding the Switch 2 but not really, what do you remember of the WiiU announcement? Like E3 Press begins, Reggie shows up and announces it... Did you understand it? Were you excited? We're you one of those asking if it works from the bathroom? (I member vividly people asking that A LOT back in the day)

Spencer Botine

Heyo 'Horts! Since Elden Ring's release in 2022, I have a much deeper appreciation for FromSoftware's approach to game design and have almost completed their entire contemporary catalogue. In fact, I've seen a pretty large shift in my taste in game genres, leaning more toward immersive sims and other titles that require more interaction from the player to draw out a game's story. How has your taste in game genres shifted over the years, if at all?

thejjuan1

Hello minnmax. So I've been playing and enjoying starfield. But there is discourse with “the game will be better with mods”. Look, I love mods as much as the next person, but do you think this mentality can hurt someone’s feelings towards a game? Like they can’t even enjoy the game without mods? Does the minnmax group play games with mods, and do even avoid games just to play a version with mods? Or are you boring like me? Just played game in front of them?

Travis in Fargo

With Starfield in mind: what’s your tolerance level for bugginess and jank in a video game? Does the size of studio/development team play into your opinion on the matter?

Michael Berry

A friend of mine showed me a website that sells giant everyday objects. You can get a giant pencil or baseball bat, things like that. They are all silly and unnecessary but I love the novelty of these. They do not sell this but I would love to have a giant playable game boy. What object would you like to super size?

Chandler

Remember betterquest? Are any of you currently taking an active approach to self-improvement or are you just kind of hoping it will happen naturally?

Thom Blackburn

What is the most abstract game you've ever played?

Joshua Ayers

Hi BJKS! Can we all just say something nice about the Saints Row reboot? As someone who genuinely liked it I am biased, but I definitely think it got too much hate. For me, I loved the Nahualli; I thought he was used to tell a funny story, and to riff on people's expectations in a smart way. Anyone else? Anything? Please?

Aaron Hurd

The long history of Mario games has me thinking: do you think there are any new IP/franchises established in the last several that will still be getting new games in 50 years? There are some I see as having potential, such as Starfield or Elden Ring, but sometimes it feels like the biggest video game franchises 50 years from now will still be Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Call of Duty, Final Fantasy, etc.

Tokyo Game Life

Hi MinnMax, The Game Awards started in 2014, and since 2015, every Game of the Year winner was released in the first half of the year. Is this purely a coincidence or are critics more hesitant to give Game of the Year to a title they just played?

Radio

Hey gang. What ever happened to Peter Molyneux's NFT game, Legacy, which made 50 million in crypto back in 2021? I think the game never released... There's an untold story here.

Diego Vasquez

Hi team, With the launch of "Starfield" last week (or as Ben Hanson might call it, 'Axe Murderer Simulator 3000'), plus the release of "Sea of Stars," GOTY talks have started to heat up as we head into the final stretch of 2023. I may have missed it, but have you all discussed "Dave the Diver" at all? I've found it a charming game that you can pick up for short stints or dive into for a longer session. I feel like it has flown a bit under the radar (sonar?), but it's a FUN game that I feel should at least be in the conversation. What does the panel think?

CrabPalace

Hello Cohortons hearing Hoos. The new Mario and Sonic games are going to sell great, but I've read that 2D platformers are the worst selling genre these days. Most new successful 2D games with platforming in are Metroidvanias. What would a 2D platformer from a new IP have to do to interest you in 2023?

Juz10

Hi MinnMax, Your slogan is effective, concise, and really lets viewers of your channel know what you are about. I think it is great! If you ever want to expand your channel to attract different audiences, I have come up with different slogans you could use for your new demographic. Your current slogan is “Welcome to MinnMax, a place about games, friends and getting better.” If you want your channel to appeal to seniors’ citizens your new slogan could be “Welcome to MinnMax, a place about whole grains, pens, and the weather.” If you would like to attract more expecting mothers to your channel, your slogan could be “Welcome to MinnMax, a place about labor pains, “When does it end!” and getting fatter.” Lastly, if you want to become more of a cooking show, your new slogan could be “Welcome to MinnMax, a place about flames, roasted hens, and adding cheddar.” If you ever expand the channel, you have my permission to use these slogans for the small price of one autographed Chibi-Robo picture from Sarah.

Will Turner

Sup Y'all. Playing Sea of Stars, I'm noticing many references to my beloved RPGs of yore. Shout out to Moleville in Mario RPG. What are the most heavily referential games you've played and when does it go bad?

notweirder

Hey Minnmax! If you had to create a game studio, what would it's name be? I did a game jam a few months ago as a solo project, and called myself "1-2 Many", weirdly proud of that one.

Mason Cowell

Howdy all! So after S ranking every mission in AC 6, and getting all the endings, I was craving more but there just wasn't anything left to get from the game. So I looked at the games on my wish list and decided that Hades was going to the be the game to scratch that twitchy action itch. And it's working! Do you have any similar stories?

Shawn Mills

Hi Minnmax! I wanted to add on to last week's discussion of what the best robot is. Ben's answer was Uncle Simon from the Twilight Zone but Uncle Simon is actually played by a more famous robot named Robby the Robot. He was built for the famous 1950s sci-fi movie Forbidden Planet but he was so expensive he got reused in several other MGM projects including the Addams Family and Columbo. Ironically, he did appear on Lost in Space as well where he battled the famous robot from that show. I believe Robby the Robot is in fact the best robot or at least the hardest working one.

Joe Dean

Y'all have a budgeting app or something you're fond of?

Bread

Hey MinnMaxer's, I've got a question: Are video game cheats a tainted concept in the modern era? I feel like we all have various fond memories of cheats and secret codes, or even hack devices like Action Replay, but the only time cheats ever enter the conversation now is people hacking lobbies in Call of Duty, using aimbots in Overwatch, or otherwise exploiting glitches in online games. Cheating that negatively effects other players and always results in inevitable bans. Meanwhile many things that were once cheat codes, are now accessibility options like infinite health or one hit kills. I can't even remember the last time I saw an "unlock all levels" code! The glory days of cheats are obviously over, but are video game cheats only going to be the villain from here on out? Sincerely, someone who really wants to enter a 300 character long Action Replay code one more time.

Adam Cohen

Hello MinnMax crew. I've been playing Balder's Gate 3 and hearing a lot about Starfield, and I have to ask. Does anyone actually like Encumbered systems in games? Like I get that people can realistically only carry so much, but my halfling Bard also wouldn't be able to carry 17 axes and 4 shields, regardless of weight. Why is an arbitrary amount of weight where we draw the line? Also, why do we care about realism in a game with orcs and wizards? In reality it just becomes time consuming and tedious to pass items to NPCs or fast travel to a shop keeper. I feel like we could just stop putting that in games and everyone would be okay. Am I wrong? P.S. Kyle's G.A.L.O.T. from last week about the crazy NHL overtime rules was wildly inaccurate. The only true part was that 7 overtimes has never happened. However they just play normal hockey until someone scores a goal. No extra pucks or players.

Mark Polley

Why do you think there hasn't been a call of duty movie yet, do you think its a commercial reason, or an artistic integrity one? Who's stopping this?

Cody Allison

Howdy Minnmax, A simple question for today. What's been in your music rotation lately? Got any recommendations?

Fatt Mish

Outside of the Orange Box, what games or aspects of games do you think of with the color orange? Any specific characters, items, or areas in any game? - Mars from MN

Kees ('Case') Mulder

There's been a lot of discussion about Starfield's lack of space exploration. I suppose Bethesda is simply more interested in talking humans with a spacefaring facade, which is fair. But it also really makes me wonder: Is satisfying space exploration even possible in a game? Any semi-realistic exploration in the vast emptiness of space would be boring, right?

James from Michigan

Hey gang, first time writing in since listening from the very beginning. Just moved away from Florida for the first time in my life, straight to the middle of nowhere in Michigan! Could you guys tell me some of your favorite things about the Midwest?

Blake Ouellet

Hi Ben and the crew, Blake from Canada here. I've been listening since the GI days, but naturally the NHL-related misinformation is what prompted me to sign up after all this time. I'm sorry to say the overtime multi-puck rules are not correct, but I did want to share my favorite real rule, because the NHL is fairly ridiculous regardless: - Teams dress a starting goalie and a backup goalie for each game. If both are injured during the game, an "Emergency Backup", as designated by the league is brought in. In 2020, 42 year old building manager David Ayres was brought into the game against the Toronto Maple Leafs and won.

Jacob Marker

Hello, can we take a moment and press F to pay respects to Mimimi games? I haven’t heard many people talk about it but the studio is shutting down after 15 years of making incredible games like Shadow Tactics, Desperados III, and just released Shadow Gambit. Ye will be missed Mimimi, thanks for all the fun.

Daniel Boateng

Hanson, we never got your thoughts on Final Fantasy 16! Have you played it? What did you think? It's easily my favorite Final Fantasy, and I'm curious if you ever turned around on it

Travis in Fargo

What’s something you’re super, unreasonably judgy about?

Innocuoususer

I recently learned that brown is not a color, but instead considered a composite of other colors. The part of this that really blew me away, though, was learning that the word "brown" in several other languages literally translates to "dark orange". In your international travels, have you come across a local term or phrase that changed your understanding of the world?
