Why do you think Gamescom and TGS are thriving while E3 appears to have met its end?

Hello Ben and the CLCs! My question requires a bit of background, so here goes: On the Discord, we talked more about the 100 Hansons vs 1 silver-back gorilla question from last week. Fellow patron WeGoGiant said he imagined 100 Hansons riding around on Oatchi's back (note: Oatchi is the adorable dog from Pikmin 4). That led me to think of the following question: what color Pikmin would Hanson and the rest of the cohorts be?

Ronn

Hello MinnMax! My wife just finished Pikmin 4 and is ready to pick her next game. The only issue is that she does not know what to play and I do not know what to suggest. She is not the biggest gamer but she was absolutely obsessed with Pikmin and played a phone game called Mushroom Wars. I have suggested Kirby and the Forgotten Lands for her next game but I would also like to get some other suggestions. She mainly plays on the Switch and her phone and enjoys games with cute graphics. Thanks for any suggestions y'all have!

Victor Pham

Why aren't there more diverse fantasy settings? It feels like everything is attempting to emulate Tolkien or DnD and there aren't a ton of wholly original fantasy stuff in games. Or am I not looking hard enough?

Stevelution

You’re allowed to erase one sequel to any game from history. What are you picking and why? I’m picking Duke Nukem Forever because…I mean the world would be a better place without it.

What’s the best thing you’ve ever found at a rummage sale or while dumpster diving? About 10 years ago, I found a SNES in its original box in a dumpster. It was in great condition and had the controllers and cables.

Nick Hall

Howdy, recently bought an xbox series s and game pass. First console since PS3. I listened to jeffm and leo and have absolutely loved midnight suns and hitman. Specially midnight suns. About 130 hours in it. Whats a Ben suggested gamepass game i should play next??

Richard Kennedy

Hey, MinnMaxians! It's been an incredible year for gaming, especially in the RPG genre. One thing that truly defines a great RPG for me is when I stumble upon side quests that feel like miniature masterpieces, packed with rich details and gameplay that keeps me obsessed with the game all day long. So, my burning question for you is: What's your ultimate favorite RPG side quest of all time? (Let's leave out 2023 releases for this one!)

Adam

Hi guys, first time I’m asking a question as a Minnmax noob. I’m currently watching the Halo tv series, belatedly. What the f*#% is going on. I’m 3 episodes in and so far it’s: Gun battles 1, exposed asses 2. Seriously what was the thinking behind the development of this mess? My question is, if you were handed the keys to a gaming franchise and asked to develop the tv show, what franchise are you picking (obviously TLOU, Halo and Fallout are already out of bounds, as well as, erm, Twisted Metal) and which approach are you taking? Slavish recreation a’la TLOU, or ‘boldly’ striking out on your own a’la Halo? Love the show, blah blah blah pointless platitudes ❤️

JeffM's Backlog

I wanted to give a quick shoutout to JeffM's streams this year. His relaxed attitude and deliberate playstyle is unique in the streaming world and it makes for a very chill watch, while still being engaging. It's a perfect fit for some of these big sandboxes that he's been streaming this year, like Dwarf Fortress, Zelda, and now Starfield. I've loved these streams, even for games I don't play myself. Can't help but feel like this would be a great format for his long awaited return to Red Dead Redemption 2.

RiskyChrisP

What’s the best prank you’ve ever pulled on someone?

Steve Bellegarde

Hey MinnMaxx! If an acquaintance finds out you are into games then asks “What is your favorite game?” What do you say? I usually don’t want to get into it too deeply so I say Red Dead 2 as most people have at least heard of it.

Michael Hatt

Hey MinnMax! I am here to declare my hatred of the flamethrower. In every game it's featured in I find it to be an unsatisfying and unfun weapon to use. Am I alone here? Are there any other common weapons or items in games that you have never seen the appeal of?

RabidLime

Cohorts, do you rebind buttons or keys when able to? some games keep trying to convince me that by default F is 'Use/Interact' when it should definitely be E. everyone knows F is used for Flashlights and Special Abilities

Shakenbake67

Hey Minnmaxers, Ed Boon was on the most recent episode of Hot Ones and he did pretty good, it was an entertaining episode. But wtf, that was the strangest crossover I’ve seen in video games. It seemed out of place like maybe an actor was supposed to be there to promote MK1 instead of Ed Boon What are some of your most memorable “good” crossover events in video games?

Lamb Dance

If you could drive a car using a game controller instead of a steering wheel, would you?

Sam Worms

Hey everyone! If you had to choose, would you rather be too wet or too dry?

Jason Wojnar

Have you ever had any really good, memorable conversations with complete strangers in public or on public transportation and then never hear from that person again? Last year on a flight home from Ukraine (via Poland and a connection in Finland) I sat next to a woman from Finland who owns a movie theater in her home country and works with distribution. We talked the whole 9 hour flight about movies, video games, and the movie industry in Finland.

How did you all handle haircuts during the pandemic? Did you still get them/cut it yourself/let it grow? If you cut it yourself, how did that go?

BEEFCAKE

Hey Benny and the horts! Long time listener, many times writer. Are you guys interested in doing Max spoilers or a watch along podcast for animes? I know giant bomb has had a couple. And I really love the one with Jeff, Gerstmann and Dan. I’m sure there are others out there but it’s just fun to hear from people I’m familiar with. I’m sure a healthy chunk of the community would agree. And with the writer strike, there may be a gap in normal max spoilers topics. Also, sorry about calling you Benny and the horts. Feels like a weird 50s doo-wop group

Christian Jimenez

Hello, Do you ever judge people for things you shouldn't but can't help it a little. I was watching an interview with Christopher Nolan and noticed he also had those bad British teeth, and yeah what's up with that. Thanks.

Chandler

If the four of you were going to play a video game together what game would it be?

CptCobblePot

Greetings Minnmaxers, The Discord was recently revealed to be the number 1 Puddle of Mudd fan base. Apparently Puddle of Mudd released a new album in 2023! What’s your opinion on Puddle of Mudd and other A-list bands? (Ben mic whisper *Please this a joke, tell us about other terrible bands)

David Kelly

Hey can Leo give a quick review of Saints Row as it's now launched on steam and after so many updates the original impressions are likely dated?

Duderado

Do you ever feel bad for not liking a game? I feel a strange sense of guilt for not enjoying Starfield. I don't know if it's because I've loved most other BGS games or I have FOMO hearing from those that are enjoying it. Cheers!

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and Friennds, How far into a game do you stop side questing? I’m about 70% through Final Fantasy XVI and loving it but with the release schedule this year I might have to critical path the rest of the game to be in on Two Tenn discussions.

Ghoul's Fold

Who is the enigmatic character "Best Friend Ronnie?" Is he Ben's best friend? Is he MinnMax's best friend? Is he his own best friend? Please put an end to this greatest of mysteries.

How come most games don't include a way to re-watch unlocked cutscenes from a menu? - BG

Andrew Lyman

Hello ensemble! As most of you have been in the gaming space for awhile, I wanted to know what opportunities you’ve had with passing on your luck/experience. Whether that’s being a mentor or highlighting someone, where have you had the chance to make this space more available and better for others? Have a great week and I hope you all do something selfish and fun even while drowning in responsibilities and games. ❤️

John Scovic

Has anyone on the panel every wanted to make a game before? Maybe do a game jam? In the month of October? Well have I got the Minnhax 2023 for you! This is a low-stress month-long jam for people of any experience level running from October 1st to October 31st. Find more on the MinnMax discord and see Rayluaza or John Scovic for any questions!

Hey Minnmax, Ive been playing Armored Core and in one of my attempts at a fight against two other mechs, I absolutely blew it. Barely did any damage and died within a few seconds. Afterwards, one of the other mech pilots said something along the lines of 'target didnt match the briefing, will have to check in with HQ when we return'. Essentially saying 'this guy was supposed to be dangerous but turns out he sucks ass'. Absolutely destroyed me. Whats the best insult youve ever received from a video game?

whitemex

How many websites do you actually go to daily these days? I'm now down to just 3 really. Dedicated apps made a lot of my in browser web surfing nearly obsolete

Crayter

Yes. Hi. Hello. I have a game query. With game names being portmanteaus like Gunbrella and Pokemon, what two words would you like to see smashed together to make a new video game?

MechaPig

Hey, y'all! With Starfield asking the question: What if fallout in space? What classic RPG formats would you like to see put into new and different settings? Pokemon in the French revolution? Mass effect in a convenience store?

John

Hello all,I have been playing the recently released “En Garde!” and it has been an absolute delight. It perfectly captures the quippy and swashbuckling vibes of non-interactive media like zorro and the princess bride. What games have you all played that have clearly captured a vibe or feeling established in film or another media?

Bryan Tylec

A few weeks ago on the show, Ben tried to say something about Resident Evil but accidentally said Resident Eevee, instead. And now I can’t stop thinking about that. So, please, for my sake and the sake of the upcoming Halloween season, brainstorm some ideas and craft a Pokémon game set in the Resident Evil world (not a Resident Evil game set in the world of Pokémon).

SlyCut

Hello all, Would you take the ability to snap the best version of french toast, waffles, or pancakes into existence whenever you want for the rest of your life or would you take $25,000 in cash?

Boondock-Bandit

What movie/TV/game quote has stuck with you and informed your daily life? I often think about a line from the MCU Shang Chi movie, where an archer says “If you aim at nothing, you hit nothing.” It really hit me (pun?) and taught me the importance of goals, even tiny ones, to help progress in anything.

Adrian Creates

Hello Ben and the ((insert witty pun referring to the crew)), Um… have you guys been watching the live action One Piece series? For the past year or so I’ve heard my kids watch the anime from the other room and it was always annoying to me cause it feels like 35% of the dialogue is just unnecessarily intense screaming. Anyway, my kids convinced me to try the live action version and my mind was sufficiently blown. This is easily the best thing I’ve watched all year. Hanson, you specifically I think would LOVE it, it’s so well written and somehow (I can barely understand it), it still feels like an anime! It’s light-hearted and deep at the same time. It’s “cartoony” but with real people! Maybe this is a better question saved for Kyle but thought I’d throw it out there just in case! Thanks for being you!

wittynicknamehere .

Buckle in for a story you'll surely tolerate, because I had a really fun dream about Minnmax last night! I was watching a New Show Plus with the theme of apology and atonement. JeffM was on the sticks, playing GTA III, and going up to random NPCs in the game so that JeffM could verbally deliver some very overly earnest and heartfelt apologies to them, for the violence and chaos he'd wrought in their neighborhood. Leo and Ben were feeding him these apologies, and making him say some very silly things he was supposedly apologizing for. It got funnier when JeffM approached hostile NPCs, who promptly attacked or shot at him rather than taking his earnest apologies at face value. I woke myself up from laughing at JeffM's deadpan attempts to continue apologizing to some gang member who was eagerly perforating him with gunfire all the while. Anyway, I know Ben would have about 500 answers to this, but to the group at large I ask: any funny or bizarre Minnmax dreams in your past?

Malcolm Holliday

Hey MinnMax! I saw so many interesting games in JeffM's most recent board game video and it got me thinking, how do y'all usually setup time to get a board game session going with friends? Have you ever had to convince a friend group to try out a new game(or board games in general)?

Virgil B

Which games make you feel the most creative? I feel the most creative when I’m coming up with combos in games. I remember reading a quote from Murakami’s book Killing Commendatore, “What is important is not creating something out of nothing. What my friends need to do is discover the right thing from what is already there.”

John Lee

Hello all! Have you ever seen anything in a game or movie that made you want or actually try to do something in real life??? For example: obviously everyone watches Home Alone as a kid. One day my friends and myself had the bright idea of making the Zipline but in the woods in our neighborhood. instead of a cable we used some random rope we could find, tied it to two trees which was obviously not tight enough. And instead of handlebars we used a broom with two nails through the middle to guide the rope! I volunteered to go first, don't really remember how far I went. I just remembered letting go eventually. Falling to the floor. Looking at my hand and the nail had cut me above my thumb to the white skin. Nothing too serious. But I instantly had enough and said "Alright I'm heading home" lol The next day I found out that everyone else who did it also got a cut on either their left or right hand. Anyways. Got any fun stories like that?!

Jake

Last week's conversation about all the great RPGs recently reminded me of a article JeffM wrote for Game Informer back in 2018 in which he argued that Red Dead Redemption 2 was the best RPG of the year. I really loved that piece because I had never considered RDR2 an RPG, but I think Jeff's absolutely right. In RDR2 when you say "howdy" to a passing stranger or go fishing to unwind after a long day, these are purely role-playing acts. You do them because that's what Arthur Morgan would do, not because the game rewards you mechanically for them. On the other hand, in many traditional RPGs you spend a lot of time doing things like grinding for XP or managing inventory, which seems to me like the opposite of role-playing. These actions are motivated only by game mechanics, and they take the player out of the world they're meant to be inhabiting. So in light of recent games like Baldur's Gate 3, Starfield, Final Fantasy XVI, etc., what do you think makes a game a true RPG? Encouraging the player to fully inhabit their character and the game's world? Having a robust set of gameplay systems to let the player approach problems their own way? Something else entirely?

Hunter Short

Hello all! Last week on the podcast I saw Ben take a big swig of an Orange Cream bubbly. I was so jealous. That is the best flavor and every time I go to the store I look for it. It has become a rare find for me. What other bubbly flavors or sparkling water do y’all enjoy? I wanna find some new favorites!

Ryan M

What game do you think is the most misunderstood? That is, the game that no one else appreciates as much as you.

UmamiUnagi

We found out this week that JeffM has been clocking out of Starfield at 4am. What's the latest you can remember logging out of a game and how disgusted did you feel with yourself?

Andy Weas

Hey MinnBabes!Y'all ever turn down the radio to slow down your car or find your destination? I do it all the time and think the idea of "hold on, I have to turn down the volume to see" is hilarious.

SuperCerberus

What are your best and worst concert memories? Last year I saw Carpenter Brut, a synthwave artist whose songs were in Hotline Miami, and there was a guy there wearing a letterman’s jacket and a pig mask (like a Hotline Miami character) who was crowdsurfing for the whole show. That guy rules!

henrik mortensen

I have found Jeff Marchiafava´s dobbelgänger. The actor Danny Woodburn in the movie Jingle All The Way. You can see in that man´s eyes that he has not completed Red Dead 2. Hate your show!

Fizz

With Starfield and Armored Core 6 both offering some robust changes in their new game plus offerings, what do you all like to see in a NG+? How do we feel about narratives being fully fleshed out through multiple play throughs, what game has offered the best NG+ to date and is it MGS1?

Kep

id love to know if haley has any knowledge on the new unity revenue terms. from what ive seen from when the change takes place onward any sales on games even if they were released prior that fall under the rules would be charged the install rate. whats the legality of changing the cost for things that have already been released? and if that is within their power whats stopping them from ever just deciding "all profits form any game made in our software belongs to us now"? (if she didnt talk about it in todays new show+ i havent watched it yet) thanks!

thejjuan1

Hello minnmax. The only question is why in the god's name is Unity thinking? They are absolutely going to kill the indie games developers with the new policies?!

Catpurrnicus

Hello fellow humans. Were your middle schools dances held in a gym or cafeteria? What was the closing song that most likely played during yours? Ours were always in the cafeteria and the song was Boyz 2 Men "End of the Road"

Fatt Mish

Hi minnmax friends. Thank you for fostering such a great community. Do any of you have a go-to family entree that you just love (maybe something around the holidays)? Also, is it something you'd really like to make if you had a friend over for dinner? Thank you for the amazing productions! - Mars from MN

Juz10

Hey MinnMax. I have a question for Ben. Have you ever walked into a room and your friends said "It's Ben..." in the style as if they were about to start singing the opening lines of the Barenaked Ladie's song One Week? If not, that what some of the members of MinnMax should do.

Jarell Pryor

Hey folks, Question for Haley! Did you get a chance to noodle on the Unity news this week? (Pricing changes so devs could be charged per game install) I'm sure it's a developing story, so who knows what of this actually gets implemented. But I'd wanted to hear your thoughts on how something like that might affect game publishing contracts and revenue splits moving forward. Thanks!

Anthony Brown

Hello MaxMinners, With Starfield releasing it has finally fulfilled my long awaited dream of a sequel to Escape Velocity Nova, a space game about an expansive universe with multiple faction questlines that involved deep "however you want to play" freedom for the player and extensive modding support. I've been waiting for it for 15 years. What are the unconnected games have been sequels in spirit for you?

FrostedSherbert

I recently learned about a game called Ratatan that had a kickstarter recently and found it really interesting. It wasn't until my cousin told me about Patapon that I learned that it was inspired by it. Has there been a time where you all saw a game announcement or played a game, and only learned after it was inspired by another game? If not, is there a game you have played that you wished games took inspiration from?

Luca Alberti

Hey MinnMaxers, I think we've all come to the conclusion that Nintendo loves making quirky stuff, but nothing compares to the title "Princess Peach will star as the main character in a brand new game (temp.)", can anyone explain this insanity?

LlorchDurden

I know there's not a ton of MinnMaxers into racing games / sims but on top of The Crew, we're getting Forza in October and WRC in November (which looks good for the first time ever) Without a release date but looking promising we got - Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown (horrible name) , which claims they got a 1:1 Hong Kong map to drive around - Over Jump Rally , nostalgia trip to SEGA rally games. Remember SEGA making good rally games? - Le Mans Ultimate, WTF happened here? A game for Le Mans alone? This is gonna be huge or a huge flop. IIRC , new Forza also got Le Mans going on so what is this? Amazing end of the year for the racing side of gaming!

Mark Garcia

I have had to put Sea of Stars down and I don’t know if I’ll go back to it. Not because it’s a bad game, but because the five hours I had invested in it was lost when there was an issue with syncing my save states to Steam cloud. Have you ever lost the save state of a game you had sunk a significant amount of time into and hadn’t finished? Did you ever finish the game or did you walk away from it and never return?

Hayden Scott-Baron

Ben was talking about wanting abridged versions of games. A ‘readers digest’ equivalent for games is something I’ve always wanted. These are titles I’ll otherwise never play. Nier Automata? Yakuza? Assassin’s Creed? Even games like God of War could use a mode without upgrades and puzzles. Heck, let me auto play bosses too. Which games would you pay to play streamlined?

Dusty Beaman

What did you miss most about Ben?

Plastic_Sinatra

Hey MinnMax folks, why aren't they called Zeldoidvanias?
