Not counting Tears of the Kingdom and Baulders Gate 3, arguably the front runners for goty, would the games ranked 3-10 games be for sure game of the year in past years?

How old does a game have to be before you can call it a classic? What about retro? Old? (And don't say, "It depends," that's no fun. We need hard numbers!)

Hey Minnmax! Now we’ve gotten that egg debacle cleared up. Whats the best flavour of ice cream? And why is it banana?

What Patreons do y'all support yourselves? Any recommendations?

Hey Best Friends, earlier this year Sarah said that New Year's resolutions were just people bragging about something they haven't done yet. Does she want to publicly follow up with anyone to really rub it in?

Since everyone keeps talking about how great 10/20 is with both Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder releasing. Check out how insane this stretch of games is in November 2011: 11/1 - Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception - 92% 11/8 - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - 88% 11/11 - The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - 96% 11/11 - Lego Harry Potter: Years 5–7 11/13 - Super Mario 3D Land- 90% 11/15 - Assassin's Creed: Revelations - 80% 11/15 - Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary - 82% 11/15 - Rayman Origins - 87% 11/15 - Saints Row: The Third - 84% 11/15 - Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - 80% 11/18 - Minecraft - 82% 11/20 - The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword - 93%

Hey, Minnfolk, when have you felt the most useful in trivia? Once, playing jackbox, we had to put a bunch of 90s sitcoms in chronological order, well I just so happened to grow up in the 90s, so I knocked that out of the park. How about you?

I love trying new games with people but sometimes teaching a friend how to play can feel like an onboarding meeting with a new employee. What are your personal best practices for introducing a friend to a new game?

When I take a walk and there are some leaves that are crunchier than others, and that made me want to ask what the best thing to step on is? Do you base it off of the sound it makes or what it feels like?

Hi all! My favorite food in the world was the carbonara from the now defunct Boston restaurant Pomodoro. In trying to replace it, I’ve realized that I don’t actually like carbonara that much, just THEIR carbonara. Playing Mario Wonder, I discovered I feel the same way about Mario and platformers. Super Mario Wonder is the most joyous experience I’ve had since Super Mario Odyssey. Yet, I’ve tried dozens of non-Mario platformers in that span and I’ve been too bored to finish a single one. Do you have your own “carbonara” when it comes to any genres of games/music/film/food etc.? (In other words, is there an example of a standout in a genre that is SO GOOD that it tricked you into thinking you liked the genre, when you really just liked that one masterful execution of it?)

Travis in Fargo

Remember how zombies exploded in popularity like 10 years ago? What’s the next “zombies?”

Victor Garcia

Hi, everyone. Two part question. If there was a MinnMax restaurant and each of you had a meal/dish named after you, what would come with yours? It can be any type of food. And for the second part of the question, now that you've all come up with your dishes, which one, that isn't yours, would everyone order?

Alex Swaim

I have realized that my preferences for games/movies/etc can depend on the time of year. For example, every October, I find myself in the mood for the spooks! So I install a few scary games to play - This year it's Cry of Fear and The Forest. Another seasonal trend that is perhaps less common is that I get really into competitive games over the winter. I think all of the time spent indoors makes me want a game with near infinite replay-ability, that I can just sink my teeth into and really lose myself in. Are there any games or genres that you find yourself wanting to engage with at certain times of the year?

Thom Blackburn

Hi Cohorts! Critics seem to be bending more toward enjoying short experiences, Why isn't there an equivalent of short films for games? Thanks!

If you were visiting a new doctor, what would be the more alarming/disqualifying thing for your doctor to wear as they entered the room: a raccoon skinned hat or Nickelodeon Moon shoes?

Which is your favorite hidden character in the Tony Hawk franchise? Is it Shrek? Why is it Shrek? It should be Wolverine.

Talyn

Hey Ben and the CLCs. We’ve seen a trend recently with developers known for their open world exploration release new games with extremely limited/ pointless exploration. Starfield has no point to explore. Final Fantasy 16 also had no reason to explore. AC Mirage cut out a lot of the open world exploration. Is this an overreaction to the open world fatigue in the last few years? Do you think the lackluster performance of these games will bring back more focus on exploration in future titles?

Ryan M

Hi MinnMax Crew, In honor of Spider-Man 2, if you had to wear one superhero outfit every day as your only clothes, which one would it be and why (the outift is cleaned every day, so you don't have to worry about it being dirty)?

Kraven Morcome

Hey MinnMax, Ben, I rewatched the Miles Morales Deepest Dive and you had some predictions for Spiderman 2. 1. Miles' powers being called venom powers is confusing and will be addressed. Miles will say "He's not venom! I am!" 2. The sequel will have to be co-op. "There's no way they don't do that" 3. You backtracked on your second prediction pretty quick and said "if it isn't co-op then the first 50% of the game is Peter and the second half is Miles fighting evil Spiderman." 4. They probably won't re-use the New York map. Congrats on your predictions!

tbird5000

I'm fascinated by people's 'gateway' experiences- or put another way, things that opened their eyes to new possibilities in a medium. For me with music that was Radiohead's Kid A, and in games probably Psycho Mantis breaking the 4th wall in Metal Gear Solid. Does the crew have any MIND EXPANDING experiences to relate? (doesn't have to be games!)

Rikimaru

Hi MinnMax, happy 4 years! Do you associate any game series with a specific time of the year? Which holiday/season do each of you associate with the following game series: Psychonauts - Summer or Halloween? Crash Bandicoot - Summer or Winter (Holiday)? The Legend of Zelda - Spring or Summer? Dark Souls - Halloween or Winter (Holiday)? Dead Island - Summer or Halloween? Bonus / Wild cards: Animal Crossing Pokemon Spider-Man Super Mario Bros. Uncharted

I’m DMing a spooky Halloween D&D mini-campaign. For one of the battle encounters, I can’t decide among a gremlin obsessed with biting off fingers, a rotting dragon corpse controlled by a parasite, or a poop mephit. Please help!

Hey MinnMax! With all the recent critically acclaimed games coming out these past few months, I can't help but think about how prevalent each game's Metacritic score is still when it comes to discussions about them online (imo). Where are you guys standing on this? Is attention to review scores distracting and limiting, or just a healthy starting point for discussion?

Dan from Canada

What game would you send yourself back in time to experience ? I just started playing final fantasy for the first time this year (16 and 7 remake) and wish I started back in the day in the 90s

Last week I met Larissa Kadochnikova, an 86 year old Ukrainian actress who starred in some of the most iconic Ukrainian films of the 60s and 70s. Who is the oldest celebrity or artist you have met?

Hey Ben and the CLCs, With so many new games on different systems coming out, how long does it take you to get used to the controls and what’s the worst thing you’ve done while adjusting? For me, I picked up Horizon Forbidden West for the first time in a year to get ready for the DLC and promptly managed to plummet to my death from my flying machine because I couldn’t remember how to glide. On another example, I even almost stopped playing Tears of the Kingdom because my PlayStation brain could not wrap my head around the Switch controls.

Devin Raposo

Hi MinnMax: What's your favorite example of a game making you want to explore ideas and subjects brought up in a game outside of the game itself? Ex. Bloodborne making you want to read Gothic literature or Uncharted 4 making you want to learn more old pirate stories. Thanks!

HoneyBoy

sup Ben and fam, I started playing Spiderman this weekend and while messing with the options…I noticed that motion blur is active, and im sitting here thinking, who leaves motion blur on? and why does every game have the option set as active cause from my understanding is NO ONE plays with motion blur. thanks ben/everyone.

Hayden Scott-Baron

I used to play blindfolded driving games, where two drivers were blindfolded, and their navigators had to tell them how to steer. It turned any split-screen driving game into a party game. Which game would you play strangely to turn it into a party game?

Joe Garifo

Howdy MinnMax, With Ben on the road for the start of the week, I was wondering if you have a favorite trip you’ve done for work?

Lewis K

Hey team, If you were a departed or missing NPC in an RPG, what would your left behind lore note say? Would it be clear, a la my phone password is Password1, or cryptic like any piece of information in a Souls game?

Mark Polley

Are any of the Super Mario Wonder songs catchy enough that you could pull one out of your head right now? Do you think any of these tracks will be iconic?

BobaFets

Have the CLC’s ever had a moment where they fell out of love with gaming? Was it a result of life responsibilities, time, etc. If so, what brought you back?

Jake Z

What's the best Halloween song that's not the theme from Halloween?

Tom Rickard

Hey folks! In the spirit of Halloween, I get a vibe that no one at Minnmax is really a horror person. I think Ben has mentioned he isn’t huge into horror movies and the like but not sure about everyone else. Is anyone on the crew a huge horror fan? If so, what is your quintessential Halloween watch? Mine is Halloween 3, Coraline, and Malignant. Thanks for all you do!

Josh LaBaw

I have a 3 year old child. Though she has seen the original NES Super Mario Bros and Mario 3 I'm worried 30 years from now her nestalga is for Mario Wonder. What have I done?

Spencer Botine

Hey Gang - can you please help settle an argument between my wife and I? Is "The Nightmare Before Christmas" a Halloween movie, or a Christmas movie? Thanks

Jacob McCourt

Do y’all remember the very UNIQUE special edition of INSIDE? If so, do you think there’s a more unique special edition game than that one? 😂

Linn

Hello crew! Happy 4th anniversary! Ben, you say this couldn’t have been done without Patreon supporters. But without your hard work, dedication and amazing atmosphere, Minnmax wouldn’t be what it is. So THANK YOU! Hope you continue for at least 44 more years. Now to my question… I laughed hysterically at the “Eat what you want-But use the toilet as a bat question” last week. However, as a girl, I thought the answer was less obvious… Since it’s not only number 2 that would be difficult in “bat mode”. Seeing as you have 3 girls in for this episode. Please also include the female perspective. (Last week, there were only guys)

Aging_Poorly

Hey Kelsey, Sarah, and the rest of y'all: question largely for Kelsey and Sarah: both of you first came on MinnMax for the Animal Crossing Deepest Dive. When pitching Sarah and Kelsey to the MinnMax community during "MinnFAQs" episodes (precursor to Party Chat) in early March 2020, Ben had this to say: About Sarah - "She is NUTSO about Animal Crossing - you could not have a more informed person." About Kelsey - "When it comes to history... like, she might be the smartest person I've ever met when it comes to video games. ... like, she'd be the greatest 'back of the box' player in the universe." And about both of you - "This is the part i get nervous about... they don't *know* each other. ... so, like, how do you introduce these people, how do you get energy up? ... They're going to be great, but when you don't know somebody, it might be tricky... but, like, Sara can TALK." So my question, Kelsey and Sarah - what do you remember about that first appearance on MinnMax? Enjoyable or stressful? Even at that first appearance, did you think that you would want to be a bigger part of MinnMax someday? (and Ben/other cohorts - feel free to chime in about your intros to Sarah/Kelsey. I love origin stories!)

Dusty Beaman

"What are some games that have been announced and forgotten that you wish would have come out?" Jeff M says Elden Ring and to play the tape back 3 years from now & Ben promised to play it back when Elden Ring wins all the game awards for 2021. Why didn't the clip get played for 2022? Why doesn't Jeff M get more appropriate levels of shame for his insistence that Elden Ring was never coming out? Please play the clip from The MinnMax Show on 09/16/2020 near the 1:39:10 mark and discuss.

Blazingscourge

Hello Minnmax! With Halloween upon us I would like to know what’s you favorite horror/spooky moment in a non-horror video game? I’ve always found the true final boss in Sonic and the Secret Rings to be very unnerving as well as Sonic’s pupil-less super form.

Cody Allison

Hey there crew. Monopoly is famous for having a lot of 'house rules' that vary from family to family. What are some house rules for a video game or board game you have that you think should be adopted by the masses.

RabidLime

dear CLCs, when you don't like a food, is it usually due to flavor? texture? how it's prepared? have a personal grudge against it?

BearCommando

Hi all, If you could apply a AAA budget to any game concept, what would you wish for? I personally would love a proper open world Lord of the Rings game in the style of something like a Bethesda RPG.

Luca Alberti

Hello crew, I always had the impression that games with no motion capture were treated as lesser entries in the best performance awards, do you think that is the case? I simply don't see a world where the talking flower from Mario Wonder or a character from Hades II win over any proper actor and I feel that isn't right given the majority of game characters are dubbed with no mocap at all!

Tokyo Game Life

Hi MinnMax, This is a wild card question. Each person can make this question whatever they want as long as they answer it.

wittynicknamehere .

All right, Minnmax. Make the big tough decision for a gamer on a tight budget. I'll EVENTUALLY own and play them all, but only one is getting bought at Casa de Nickname this year. So is it Spider-Man 2, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, or Alan Wake 2...?

Vilis

Happy almost Halloween! I've been trying to find out more about this Silent Hill Ascension business, the supposed interactive narrative/show which launches(premieres?) on 10/31. Are any of y'all planning to jump on that spooky misty train and see what it's all about? It sounds ambitious, and I do like Silent Hill, but I'm honestly not setting my expectations too high.

Jared Piers

Hello Minnmax, With the recent release of the Metal Gear Solid Collection, I would like to air a grievance of mine. Countless times, I have started listening to someone in games media, thinking they have respectable opinions when it comes to games, only to be blindsided when I find out they enjoy the Metal Gear Solid series. Those games are bad! Not fun to play and the story takes itself way too seriously! Can love bloom on a battlefield? I dont care! Please say some bad things about the series so I know who to trust. Thanks

Spencer Jenson

Hi B and the MM crew. What do you do with the money you find on the side of the road? No owner for miles so it's lost forever. What do you do with it? ($50 bill if someone asks)

Josh Johnson

How do you personally decide to retire a game or to put it in the backlog? Some of my all time favorites like witcher 3, fallout 3, and Metroid prime took me 4-5 attempts to get started on.

Ben with one N

Hellooooo there MinnMax. My 10-year old mind was blown when I found out that a bandicoot was a real animal. This memory got me thinking: are there any animals that would make really great playable characters that we haven't really seen too much of? For example, I'd love to see a game where you can glide around as a flying squirrel, or a realistic gator game where you stealth-swim through swamps and attack from the water. Give me your best animal game ideas, I promise I won't steal them!

DontBashAsh

Halloween is almost here! Who has a Halloween costume planned out for this year and what is it? If you’re not planning to dress up this year, what was your favorite Halloween costume you’ve ever put together?

SunniDee22

Dear Minnmax Crew, Have any of you watched the Netflix show, Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix? It’s the Ubisoft TV show that is loosely based on the Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. I watched the whole series and it is one of the most wild rides I have ever been on with between the different video game tropes/mechanics they use, a lot of Ubisoft characters/lore in this show with Rayman and the frog being my favs, and even in the chaos of this show the story was enjoyable as well. If you haven’t watched it I would give it a try. Love the podcast!

Chris Whitfeld

Hey Minnmaxers, what's the worst game that you love?

Kevin Kuper

Hello Minnmax, I have been enjoying my time with spider man 2 but my one nitpick is not having the gadget from the 1st game that works as a trip laser, it was my favorite thing to do in stealth missions and for sticking two enemies together. What's your biggest gaming nitpick?

Graham Jones

With the anniversary of MinnMax here and all. I am thinking ahead about plans for the 5th year celebration. I am wondering if the crew has discussed doing a two tens of the first 5 years of MinnMax. I would love to see how some of the games from the past years stacked up against each other. Especially where Ben puts Balders Gate 3 🤣

Crayter

Dearest Cohorts, I write to you today with an inquiry pertaining to the recent announcement from Cloud Imperium Games that Squadron 42 is now "Feature complete", and entering the "polishing" stage. For a quick clarifying catchup for those who....well.. probably most people: Cloud Imperium Games is the developer/publisher being directed by Chris Roberts (of Wing Commander fame) behind the decade long crowd funded game project Star Citizen, and Squadron 42 is the single player campaign game set in the Star Citizen universe/engine. The question being, did any of you see the video or hear about this, and what youre thoughts are, if any, on it? I'm not fooling myself into thinking that this game thats been in the works since before the release of the Wii U will suddenly come out anytime soon, but it does at least inspire some level of confidence that they're willing to acknowledge that something CAN be feature complete. I also find the timing interesting, coming on the back of Starfields release. For what its worth, the video looks incredible! (Link below if interested in watching, fair warning, its long) https://youtu.be/IDtjzLzs7V8?si=jXAZ-MtbnQnXfLd0

Joshua Ayers

A question for B and the Cs, Do you have any good gaming habits that have become bad gaming habits? I used to think podcasts gave my time extra value when playing grindy games, but at this point it's made it harder to sit down & enjoy games that I want to focus on.

PhillyYeetSteak

Hey Minnmax, Which are cuter: regular pandas or red pandas?

Bob Buel

Favorite. Movie. Trailer. Ever?

Joseph Horak

Hello, crew! The MinnMax Show assembles an excellent range of critical voices that always feel fresh, but as the great Charli XCX reminds us, "They don't build statues of critics." Just joking, of course. Love the work of critics, but what are some of y'all's creative hobbies outside of games/content creation?

Patrick Hughes

Trick or treat Minnions of Max. You've been invited to take part in your favorite horror video game in real-life for untold riches. If you choose to accept, you retain all knowledge of events, item locations, etc. that take place in your chosen game to occur when you participate. Do you accept?

Joe Kafchinski

What's your favorite Halloween candy? Would your answer be different if the question were just "what's your favorite candy?"

Ari

Hey Minnmax, This past year my friend and I went back to played Tony Hawk Underground 1. When my friend booted up his old save file I started laughing seeing his custom character. It was the high school version he made of himself back in the day. Do you have any funny memories like this when revisiting your old games?

Alex Newman

I’ve got a question for the group, but first I want to thank Kelsey for talking about the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 DLC this year. I put a hundred hours into the game last year, despite it being the first I’d played in the series. I was planning to play the rest over the next few years but hearing how much Kelsey loved this DLC convinced me to push through the rest of the series this year despite everything else coming out, and I’m so glad I did. Related to that, what are some y’alls favorite DLC/expansions?

b_wood

There are some games we would not want our families to see us playing because we would be embarrassed. But has the shoe ever been on the other foot? Have you ever caught a family member watching or playing something that they were embarrassed you caught them playing? What was it? What happened?

Kaizoku Risu

What game do you think has the worst SEO?

notweirder

Hey Minnmax! I was re-watching the Kyle Bosman exit interview, and it reminded me that both that interview and his goodbye post on patreon were a catalyst for me choosing to go into fine arts for my undergrad (the basic takeaway was I wanted to choose something personally fulfilling in my life). Is there any one piece of media that changed the course of your life? P.S., University is going great, I can say for sure it was a decision for the best. All the best, - Eric

beebat

You guys were just on IGN daily fix for the interview you did with Bruce Nesmith! I loved this interview because it felt like a window into the game development world for those of us who have no experience in it. No question - Just wanted to say thanks and keep the interviews coming!

Zane Dukes

Where do we think Mario wonder lands in the pantheon of Mario games? I’m thinking it’s the best since Galaxy 2 (which is the best Mario game baybeeee)

Dylan Michael O'Connor

Kelsey, I am interested in getting a conure but I want to make sure I do it responsibly. Did you get yours from a shop or private sale and if privately, can you say anything about what green or red flags I should look for in an ad? Should I avoid private sales altogether?

Lance Parrish

In the phenomenal recent interview with Bruce Nesmith you talked about the reception to Starfield which at the time was largely positive. Since then user reviews on Steam and Metacritic have dipped to 61% positive and 6.9 respectively, which seem to be largely earnest reviews and not any kind of brigading. Have you ever seen public opinion slip over time like this on a game, or other piece of media?
