When is the last time you've picked up a good habit from gaming?

If you could replace the US dollar with any in-game currency, which one would you choose, keeping in mind that you CAN use the same methods to collect that currency as you do in the game. For example, if you choose rupees from Zelda, you can still collect rupees in real life by slicing tall grass, smashing open vases/pots, and helping nervous volunteers balance wooden signs. How does this new currency transform the fabric of American society as we know it?

Do you think it’s more likely that a multiverse exists or that dragons exist? Explain you’re reasoning.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I loved dinosaurs, so I wanted to be a paleontologist, but I figured out pretty quickly that wasn’t a job I’d actually enjoy.

Why is job security in the gaming industry so volatile, whether that's on the developer side or the media side?

What's the most recent game that has entered your all time top ten or that has the best chance of entering your all time top ten?

I’m reading children’s books to my kids but I get very irked when they don’t rhyme properly. Let’s see if the crew can find a better one for this. Let’s start with the one that rhymes well: -Never touch a grumpy bunny -he’s easy to annoy. -But give him crunchy carrots -and he’ll hop hop hop for joy. And the bad one: -Never touch a grumpy lamb -you won’t get very far -but cheer her up by singing -and she’ll teach you how to baaa

This could be a fun game for the cohorts to play. Everybody pick a top 5 that's related to gaming. When it's your turn share what the top 5 are, but don't tell the others what the category is. The others now need to guess what your top 5 category was and the winner is whoever best stumps the other players.

I dressed up as the Mandalorian this past Halloween and was so impressed by how uncomfortable wearing a helmet for a long period of time is. It got me thinking, what video game character do you think has the worst smelling helmet?

Are there any boss battles that were so fun, exciting, frustrating, or just gosh darn COOL that you find yourself thinking of them on a regular basis?

What's your favorite real life minigame? Mine is trying to close my hand around a flying bug. I caught a ladybug in my house the other day and let it back outside.

Hello Ben and the crew, Is it just me, or do all games do baseline camera sensitivity wrong? Every time I boot up a new game, no matter if it's a first person shooter on PC or a platformer on console, I need to up the sensitivity -- at least a couple notches. I get these things are playtested, but sheesh! Is it just me or am I being too SENSITIVE? Thanks love the show kiss kiss byeeeeeeeee!

Would you rather never be able to wear socks or never be able to wear underwear?

Question for the CLC’s. I’ve had my Steam Deck for some time and absolutely love it. It’s been a great entry point for PC gaming and emulation. I’m also a big Nintendo fan, my question is what lessons, features do you think Nintendo should borrow from Valve for their Switch successor.

If you could go back and experience a game from your youth with the lenses of your adult brain and play that game with no previous experience to it which would you pick?

TheMightyEthan

We had a big discussion about "perfect" games on the Discord the other day, and I wondered if Ben and the cohorts would weigh in. The question is twofold: first, what even is the criteria for determining if a game is "perfect"? Second, what game fits your criteria, and why is it Sonic Mania?

Karina Winter

Hey MinnMax! I had some blood drawn recently and the nurse complimented my blood. Have you ever received a weird compliment?

Zane Dukes

Why isn’t there a bigger drive for unionization in the games industry, and why aren’t more outlets and workers doing more to stand in solidarity with the exploited labor in the industry?

Travis in Fargo

Did you ever find a creative way to cheat on a test?

Hey Cohorts, I just finished Ghostrunner 2 and feel so torn. The first game was near perfect in my opinion, but the sequel adds some clunky dialogue-focused sequences that bring it down, but also some incredible levels that up the action from the first game. It feels like the epitome of a sequel with a bigger budget that added too much and muddied the water a bit. So my question is: what sequels do you feel like both improved some elements from the original and worsened some by adding too much?

Ian Switaj

Howdy MinnMax! I find it humorous that Ben considers Star Ocean 2 one of his favorite games/RPGs ever despite the fact that he never beat the final boss due to taking actions that removed the boss's limiter and made it impossible to beat without a nearly maxed level party (proof: https://youtu.be/9EbE3JUyn6o?t=4422). In that vein, do any of the cohorts have similar stories in which they advertently or inadvertently made a gaming situation more complicated than it needed to be and how did they feel about it (i.e. did it enhance or hamper the experience)?

Alex McMillan

Hello Minnmax! I’ve been playing a lot of Alan Wake 2 recently and it’s helped me get over a really debilitating fear I have of moths. Every time you visit a safe room and switch the light on, the light becomes swarmed by moths, something which initially unnerved me. However, as I have played more of the game I have become much more comfortable seeing them as I am now linking them with the safety and comfort of not-being-jumpscared. Has a game ever helped you get over a fear or problem such as this?

Travis in Fargo

What are your thoughts on the phrase: “cohost with the mo-host”? I personally love it.

Aging_Poorly

Hi Hanson, As Trivia Tower is coming up and you’re probably writing the questions soon, how’s this for a new category: “MinnMax Theater.” You and the co-host would reenact dialogue from a cutscene or gameplay. The cheesier and/or less-well-written the lines, the better. Related question for you, Jeff, Kelsey, and Jason: how are your acting chops? I’d have to think if you’re willing to do a video podcast, that you have at least one middle school/high school play under your belt. Hanson, I know you hate actors. Is it because you were cast as a tree in 5th grade?

Christian Jimenez

Hello, Capcom recently came out against the dual-edge nature of mods and their reputational damage on games. But they also like to put all their games on as many places as possible like the new iPhone and although cool, not the best way to enjoy the spectacle of those games, let alone some don't perform as needed to enjoy them. Which of the two causes more reputational damage? Thanks.

Sam Worms

Do you have any instances where you recently revisited something from your youth and found it either funnier or difficult to go back to? I've been rewatching Family Guy and dear lord there are so many jokes that went over my head as a kid.

Rikimaru

Hello MinnMax! Shout out to new IPs and second chances! This year really has been incredible for games, with a majority of the big releases being sequels like Baldur's Gate, The Legend of Zelda, and more. However, there have been a surge of new IPs with varying levels of success that I think could use a second chance. From the following new IPs released this year, each of you get to choose 1 to greenlight a sequel for: Hi-Fi RUSH Wild Hearts Forspoken Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Atomic Heart Exoprimal Immortals of Aveum Jusant

BIG!!!!HERB!!!!!!

From what I've seen of Robocop: Rogue City, it looks like a perfectly fine game that's really elevated by its license. What are your favorite games that while fairly average in the grand scheme of things, are really made special by how well they use a given license? Mine is definitely Simpsons: Hit and Run

Dusty Beaman

"What are some games that have been announced and forgotten that you wish would have come out?" Jeff M answered Elden Ring and to play the tape back 3 years from now & Ben promised to play it back when Elden Ring wins all the game awards for 2021. Why didn't the clip get played for 2022? Why doesn't Jeff M get more appropriate levels of shame for his insistence that Elden Ring was never coming out? Please play the clip from The MinnMax Show on 09/16/2020 near the 1:39:10 mark.

Since you proved in party chat that you didn't know much about canada, I decided to give you a quick QUIZZ about video game in canada 1. How many game developper is there in canada? (931) 2. What city is named the ''Capital of video game'' by many developpers (Montreal) 3. In montreal, how many game developpers are there? (48) 4. Name 3 of them (https://gamecompanies.com/industries/north-america/canadian-game-industry/quebec/montreal) THANKS!

Hi Ben, Kelsey, Jeff MarchiaFather, and Jason! What movie quotes have infiltrated your regular lives? For me it’s “I blame myself” from the Sandlot which Timmy Timmons says after his treehouse is blown up by the vacuum system while trying to get the ball back from the beast. But I just use it for everyday situations where something goes wrong.

Adam Meran

Hey gang, how often have you engaged with a show, movie, or book you thought would make for a great game or setting for a game. Been watching Scavengers Reign and wow it’s wild! Its surrealistic sci fi world, art style, and especially the Rube Goldberg machine type interactions between the flora and fauna could make for a killer game imo.

Fastmode

Since we’re officially in awards season, what underdog game most deserves a “For Your Consideration” ad campaign? My vote goes to Hi-Fi Rush. In a year full of sequels, it was the freshest, most polished new IP with the most future potential, and that should be rewarded.

Eric Reitz

Hello, Ben and the MinnMax crew! Important question for food science: do you cut your pizza into triangles or squares? And why is the correct answer triangles?

Jason Wojnar

As a fellow Jason from New York, I want to know what are some of Jason Guisao's favorite New York spots. Food, parks, theaters, anything. I personally love the restaurant Streecha. They only take cash but it's cheap and delicious.

Chandler

What is your absolute earliest memory?

Catpurrnicus

Hey Ben, correction of the week. On Party Chat, you said you needed to hook up the Quest to your PC via a wire to play Half Life Alyx. You can play through Airplay so you're not tethered to your PC.

Michael Lane

Hey MinnMaxers! I recently played through the GameCube remake of Metal Gear Solid, Twin Snakes, and was fascinated by how detailed it was for a 20-year-old game. What really stood out was how they rendered footprints in the snow and even have a picture-in-picture frame pop up when a guard sees and begins to track said footprints. It made me wonder: What are the best small details you've seen in gaming? Things that wouldn't necessarily be missed if they weren't there, but simply enhance the overall experience and immersion.

Kevin Kuper

Hello! The Mass Effect Trilogy are my favorite on gaming and I was thinking has there ever been a series of games where choice influence the next game like mass effect? This seems like a slam dunk idea and added a lot of tension when making choices. Why did no series ever try to copy their success?

Dunder

New Show Plus is a great way to involve the community and create fresh, memorable content. What is a New Show Plus option that you were not looking forward to participating in but turned out to be one you really enjoyed?

Devin Atlee-Nutts

Hey MinnMaxers, Today I remembered that Peter Molyneux was supposed to be making his NFT game with the developers '22cans' that made the news rounds a few times in the past couple of years. Do you remember what it was called? (it was 'Legacy') And did you know it released a couple of weeks ago to absolutely no fanfare? I looked up the game to figure out what it *actually* was and could only find a couple of videos on YouTube post-release with a grand total of a couple of thousand views between them all. Even the official release-day stream by the publisher was woefully poorly produced and exceedingly dull. This is a game that generated $40 MILLION in NFT sales before release but it seems to have no impact whatsoever in the gaming world beyond Peter Molyneux's involvement in the pre-release news cycle. Do you think this game was supposed to break out of the Web3.0 community into the greater gaming ecosystem or was it always cynical shovelware designed to hoodwink investors? And do you think Peter Molyneux could ever make a good game again or will he continue licencing his name to half-baked projects?

Patrick Hughes

Ahoy good folks of MinnMax! Like a good book or a favorite dish / food, there are things in life worth repeating more than once. What's your favorite game to replay and what qualities make that game so endearing to revisit time and time again?

Cody Allison

2023 is already being regarded as one of the best years in gaming. Looking beyond the sea of GOTY contenders... What's a game from this year you know won't win any awards but you think is just really neat? My personal pick is hitman freelancer mode

Chree McGee

Hey MinnMax! Is a Pokemon an onomatopoeia? If you’re unaware, onomatopoeias are words that sound like the noise they make (think BOOM, or CRASH). So wouldn’t a Pikachu count, since that’s the noise a Pikachu makes?

BSM Productions HD

Warioware move it taking so many cues from the Wii title/generation is just another reminder that anything that gets overplayed/over saturated, motion controls included, is only 15 years from being brought back. What do you think will be what comes back from the 8th generation in 2027? Will the switch 2 have a dual screen? Will we make even more unnecessary open worlds? Will Mario become boring again?

echocircuit

Why is there so much throwing up in movies and shows? I can't think of any video games or other media where that happens much or at all. Is Hollywood just sick all the time? Am I sick for not enjoying it like they want me to? What's happening?

Jonas Schlotterbeck

In theory, every Pokémon is someone's favorite Pokémon. What's your favorite Pokémon?

Vilis

MinnMax has Advanced Forward! (IYKYK) Star Ocean Second Story when it released on Playstation had a wild concept of collecting every bit of voice work in the game to make an image accessible from the main menu. Recently I heard Sarah (I think) remark that she wished Baldur's Gate 3 had a thing that was like a mural or painting that filled in as you find different dialogue in the game so you can see who you really need to still focus on. Is this a wild niche feature that actually has more appeal than one might think at first blush? I personally support the idea of a Baldur's Gate 3 mural that reflects who you've used more in your games, and even reflecting darker aspects of certain characters, like maybe a reflection for the Dark Urge for the Main Character. Also, if I wasn't still playing BG3 I'd definitely jump back into SO2 since it has some similar vibes in terms of collecting party members and romancing them.

Palo

No question, just hoping the 'is 2023 the best year ever for gaming' segment at least notes how terrible it's been for developers re layoffs etc. Tough year.

Phelix Diaz

I have been hyping myself for games by watching movies/series prior to their release. For example watching Johny Mnemonic prior to Cyberpunk or Record of Lodoss War prior to BG3. How do you get hyped up before you get to play your next fav game?

Travis in Fargo

Have you ever watched a documentary that got you interested in something you didn’t care about before? And for bonus points: what’s your favorite documentary?

TheLastArcher

What up Ben & Co.! Do you have a particular game/tv show/IP that you continue to follow even though you stopped playing or engaging with it? After the layoffs @ Bungie this week it made me realize something. I used to play a lot of Destiny 1 & 2 but haven’t actively played since The Witch Queen expansion. I still follow the games news, releases, content creators, and podcasts. Why do I continue to follow a game I no longer play!?

Chris Fantry

First, thanks for all of the amazing content you put out (especially the podcast)! What is a random, relatively unknown game from your youth that stuck with you? I think about a little known SNES RPG from Enix called Robotrek way too much. It is a game where you try to save the world from aliens. The interesting things to me were how you make robots, program their moves by button combinations (some are special moves), and craft equipment/weapons from recipes you learn when you read books you find in the world.

Marc Levender

Hey MinnMax! With the independent games journalism outlet Aftermath just having launched, what are your thoughts about these kinds of outlets in the games space? We’ve seen success stories in sports journalism with sites like Defector, but with games the independent outlets seem to be more podcast/content creation like MinnMax and Kinda Funny than your traditional journalistic outlets. Is it likely we see this shift even more as the traditional journalism platforms continue to decline? I’m rooting for them!

Dylan Michael O'Connor

What's the hardest you've ever deep dived (deep dove?) on a whole series? With Like a Dragon Gaiden coming out this week, I was reminiscing about when I played my Yakuza 7 which was my first in the series and then spent the next 12 months completing every other entry from 0-6. I'm very excited to hop into Gaiden as my first ever fully-caught-up entry and wonder if y'all have similar experiences.

Daniel Doran

The Legend of Zelda movie was just announced…name THE top 5 characters that need to be in the film (excluding Zelda, Link, and Ganondorf) and why the top five spots all go to Tingle.

Devin Atlee-Nutts

Hey Minnmaxers, *CONGRATULATIONS!* A commemorative statue is being erected in your honour, what pose are you striking? (Props and/or pets can be included!) Bonus questions: Where would it be located? (near a local landmark or favourite venue, etc.) What would be on the plaque? Maybe write each other's so you don't get too humble! ("For Exemplary Service to Videogame Preservation", "For Innovation in Independent Games Media", etc.)

Tokyo Game Life

What’s something a creator said that you just ignore? For me, it was when Tezuka said Yoshi was a turtle in a Yoshi’s Crafted World dev interview.

Andy Dwyer

Given the choice would you rather cook dinner or do the dishes afterwards?

Anthony

What's a game you wish you could play for the first time, again, and why? Mine would be Outer Wilds. The sense of mystery was so compelling and the world(s) were so strange and unique. I would love to experience that again!

Ari

Hey Minnmax, What do you do with your boogers?

Duderado

Howdy crew, Ben, on the Twilight Highlight Zone you and Cork agreed that The Twilight Zone is one of the best TV shows of all-time but overall ranked it a 6/10. Are there any 6/10 video games that you would consider to be one of the greatest games ever made?

notweirder

Hey Minnmax, simple question: are the rings in sonic actually a fun mechanic?

Chris McMullen

Hey MinnMax, 2023 has had some amazing year for game releases. We also had one of the most in depth and revealing documentary series about games, PsychOdyssey. So which 2023 game do you wish there was a PsychOdyssey-esque series about?

Jeorin

Hello MinnMax crew, When it comes to worldbuilding in games, do you prefer the theme park approach, where the playable area is full of interesting things to serve the gameplay, or the natural approach, where the world is just there to exist and gameplay elements are few and far between?

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and Friennds, Would you rather have every artist in the world cover your favorite Pitbull song OR every song in the world covered by Pitbull? Clarification, this replaces all other music.

Graham Jones

Hello Maxamillians, I have recently been trying to find creative ways to play through my game back log. My most recent idea is to play through games by developer. Basically, playing all the games I'm interested in by the same developer. Which has me thinking, if you were going through your backlog games by developer, where would you start? I think I would probably pick obsidian or remedy.

Mark Garcia

What is your favorite mechanic or system from any game you have ever played? While the rest of the game was meh, I still view Grandia 3’s battle system as one of the best battle systems in any RPG I have ever played and will literally play that game over and over just to experience that battle system.

Cosby

Apologies if this is too off-topic, but I would love you guys to weigh in on the Escapist/Second Wind situation given the relevance to MinnMax's own origins.

Brad Beyer

Hey crew! I am in the process of buying my first house, with plans to convert a large upstairs bedroom into a gaming/entertainment room for myself and friends. I’m going to invest in some nice new furniture, TV stand, desk, LED lighting, etc., but is there anything else you would recommend that you have found helpful or just enjoyable to have in your own gaming space? Brad Beyer Alpena, MI

Joshua

Hi, Everyone complained about the helpful barks in Horizon and GoW, but now people are complaining about the puzzles in Alan Wake 2 being too obtuse at times. So what are game developers supposed to do?

John

There have been several amazing pixel rpgs this year, octopath 2, sea of stars, star ocean remake; and yet I can’t see any of these taking the game of the year crown even in a less packed year. What would it take to make a must play title in this genre that would have a shot?

Virgil B

Octopath Traveler 2 and Spider-Man 2 are games that I really like and want to finish. But with all the releases this year, I am unsure if I will finish them before 2024. When making your list for the top games of the year, do games you finish take priority over games you like but have not finished?

LlorchDurden

From my far away racing games corner, I've been sinking a lot of miles into the new Forza and... I just don't see it going much further. It's become sort of a battle royale in which you survive against all cars trying to end your race at any given point. The racing is Mario Kart pretty much. The game has penalty systems and all that but at the end of the day players have to be willing to play along and I just don't think that mindset there. People gotta jump in with a clean racing mindset rather than Wreckfest-time Can you name any other games / genre that require the players to "play along" regardless of the systems the game has to ensure smooth gameplay?

Luca Alberti

Hello MinnMaxers, today I have a conspiracy theory for you: I think games are longer than the Internet makes them out to be. How Long to Beat is a great resource, but has one fatal flaw: it triggers Impostor Syndrome in slower gamers. I never report on my completion times because I feel bad about them being above average. On top of that, reviewers are also part of the problem: we're asking a group of gamers that have been playing for years, often specialized in a specific genre, to gauge the length of a game, that is not the skillset of the average player. Thoughts?

James Pies

Hey Ben and Cohorts, Are there any game endings from the last 5 to 10 years or so that have stuck with you till this day? As I finish this year's heavy hitters and get the feels with some of their endings, I can't quite shake off the final moment of survival horror game Soma from 2015 or not tear up when I listen to the End Credits song of 2020's Spiritfarer. Thank you for all that you do and I hope everyone voted!

Dylan Michael O'Connor

I just saw the picture of Sam Lake with the thermos and got me thinking, whats the funniest, silliest, or just your favourite item of game merch you have or have had? I think mine are the Big Boss hand that came with the special edition of MGSV or the Teddie punching bag that came with Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.

Mandrake

Dear gamers, Due, I think, to the success of Keighley’s Game Awards, the GOTY discourse has been more prevalent than ever. It seems that since January, a game has not been declared good without beckoning the refrain of “but is it GOTY?” Or indeed, “are you bringing this to the two tens?” Have you found this to be a valuable discussion topic? Has it gotten out of hand? Should GOTY talks be limited to the end of the year?

b_wood

Hey Crew, Since I missed my chance to insert FF7 in Party Chatthis week due to technical difficulties, I created a FF7 trivia game. Don't worry, the points are meaningless, some of the questions are easy, and some of the questions are more about MinnMax than FF7. And on that note.. Question 1: What character's name from FF7 Remake does Ben's Best Friend Ronnie and some of the MinnMax community like to chant? A. Roche B. Roche C. Roche D. None of the above Correct! Unless you said D. If you did, Tsk, tsk, tsk. That was your easy one. Speaking of Roche... Question 2: True or False: Roche does not appear in the original FF7. Answer: True. He is newly introduced and has not appeared in any other part of the FF7 compilation (as far as I can tell or unless they retcon things). More Roche: Question 3: True or False: You can avoid speaking to Roche in FF7 Remake Intergrade InterMISSION. Answer: True. Kyle Hillard proved you can when he avoided the Ft. Condor minigame and then had the audacity to share that on the Deepest Dive for InterMISSION. OK. This is the last Roche Related Question Question 4: Who said Yuffie and Scarlet were both physically attractive? A. Roche B. Biggs C. Ben D. Don Corneo Answer: C. Ben. Yup. That's right. MinnMax's Ben Hanson in the Deepest Dive for InterMISSION commented on the attractiveness of both Scarlet and Yuffie. Context MIGHT help, so go watch the video if you think you need it (specifically around the 15 minute mark, the 1 hour mark, and the 1 hour and 38 minutes mark). Speaking of choices... Question 5: True or False: In FF7 Remake, Don Corneo will always choose Cloud. However, in the original, your choices and some of the items obtained while in Wall Market will determine who he chooses. Answer: True. Fun fact...Corneo means horny in Italian, but I think it is horny in the sense of has a lot of horns and not the other meaning. Let's move away from the more questionable characters... Question 6: True or False: After Cloud wakes up from falling into the sewers at the beginning of Chapter 10, the person Cloud talks to first will be the person Cloud speaks to in the resolution scene of Chapter 14. Answer: False. While it does play a part, it isn't that simple. It also depends on the side quest you completed in Chapters 3 & 8, and some dialogue choices. You can speak to either Tifa or Aerith in Chapter 10, but still have Barret be the one Cloud speaks to in the resolution scene. Last one... Question VII: Vincent Valentine is an optional character in the original FF7. He is found in the Shinra Mansion and to add him to your party you need to unlock a safe using 4 dials. In the mansion there is a sheet of paper that gives clues on where to find the number and turning direction for each dial. However, the fourth dial's clue is a little tricky because: A. Cloud's dexterity has to be high enough to read it. B. It is written in invisible ink. C. Cloud's current HP needs to end with 777 (777, 1777, 2777, etc) in order to read it. D. Hojo needs to be with the party. Answer: B. It is written in invisible ink. You will have the choice to read each clue, but the 4th clue does not appear. Instead, there will be a blank space and if you select it, it tells you the clue is written in invisible ink and it gives you dial 4's number and turning direction. (To the winner) YOU WIN. Your prize? Dis pear. Sorry for the long entry, but there is no getting off this train. Thanks for indulging me.

I still cringe when I think of being twelve years old and authoritativley telling a classmate their taste of music was horrible for liking Good Charlotte, and that they should listen to “real” music like the Goo Goo Dolls. What confidently held opinion are you most embarrassed to have once proselytized?

Jared Piers

Hello minnmax. If you were murdered, would you come back as a ghost to haunt your murderer? In this case, you wouldn't know if their is an afterlife after being a ghost so you would be choosing between haunting someone or the mystery of death.

Jonathan R

What do you hope see form Sony studios over the next few years? With Spider-Man 2 released, there are no first party Sony games with a release date announced that I'm aware of. We know Wolverine, Fairgame$, and Concord are coming at some point in the future, but that's it. Rumors even say the Last of Us multiplayer game has been put on hold. We know next to nothing about what Team Asobi, Bend, London Studio, Sucker Punch, Bluepoint, Housemarque, Naughty Dog, etc. are up to. Personally, I'm very excited to find out about Sucker Punch's follow up to Ghost of Tsushima. What are you all hoping gets announced in the next wave Sony titles?

thejjuan1

Hello Minnmax crew. So the last few days there has been a lot of discourse of Microsoft not getting another game of the year nominee for game awards. So which studio will make the first to make the list in the future for Microsoft? And a more fun question how many year streaks can then do in the next 5 years? For example PlayStation longest streak is 4 years since 2019, while Nintendo have a 5 year streak since 2019.
