This week for community questions on the podcast, we'll have Ben Hanson, Janet Garcia, Jeff Marchiafava, and Haley MacLean. It's your turn to make the show better by leaving a question, news story, BetterQuest goal, or anything else for us to read on the show as a comment below! We’ll choose our favorite and iam8bit will ship out the great prize below for the winner! We'll stop pulling questions around 8am Central on Wednesday.

On this week’s episode we’ll be talking about...

- Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

- Xbox Developer Direct Highlights

- The Indiana Jones Game

- Avowed

- Ara: History Untold

- Senua's Saga: Hellblade II

You can chair a round table of any three people from the industry, past or present. Who’s at the table?

Thom Blackburn

When is minnmax going to have a cohorts league for fantasy critic?

Victor Pham

Are live service games inherently bad? It seems everyone is primed to hate Suicide Squad and have already rejected Sony's unannounced live service games despite having not played them.

Cody Allison

With gdq happening this week, have any on the podcast taken a real stab at speed running, if not, which one would you attempt? I tried for about a month straight and was able to take my shovel knight runs from 4 hours down to 90 minutes. Doubt I'll ever go that deep but was a rewarding experience

whitemex

Do you find it weird when an actor talks about the Character they're playing in third person and not first? Or is that just me?

CrabPalace

What will be the most controversial game of 2024?

AlexTheSnood

With the new Prince of Persia coming out, is there any other series that you’d like to see get Metroid-ified? That is, which franchise would benefit the most from its own Metroidvania?

Embrace

I saw Janet talk about finishing Alan Wake 2 on Twitter. What are her thoughts on it after beating it and where it landed on the Two Tens?

Sonny Johnson

What advice would you give to someone who wants to get a start in games journalism/games media?

Hey gang! Predict the future for me! My friends and I have a rule in Fantasy Critic where we each have to pick two unannounced games. The list is below. Which ones will actually come out this year? - Unannounced Hazelight Studios Game - Unannounced Doublefine Game - Unannounced New Ace Attorney Game - Unannounced Astro Bot Platformer - Unannounced Ghost of Tsushima 2 - Unannounced Sequel to Black and White 2 (not a remake, but B&W 3) - Unannounced Gears 6 - Unannounced New Pokemon Legends game

Hello all, What is your perfect pizza? I want the nitty gritty details now. What kind of crust? What kind of cheese/cheeses and how much? Sauce? Which and much? Toppings? Which and how much? Take out/restaurant? From where? Or maybe homemade? How do you make it? Or maybe you just love frozen pizza? Which brand? How do you like your pizza sliced? Do you eat it with your hands or do you prefer to use silverware? We need those details!

Ben, on last week’s episode you mentioned going on vacation with your wife and child, as well as saying it was one of the best trips you’ve ever gone on. I am curious what the trip was like, for example, what kind of activities you all participated in. Day trips? Just laying around in a beautiful place? I have found going on vacation to be less relaxing since I became a parent with a young child. It’s to the point where I now use the word “trip” instead of “vacation” when we’re going somewhere. WHAT IS YOUR SECRET?! Thanks, love the show.

Dear MinnMax, how much gaming is too much gaming?

Travis in Fargo

I just finished my 4th playthrough of Metroid Dread, and now it’s officially one of my top 10 favorite games of all time. It was released in 2021, which makes it the most recent game to crack that list. What’s the most recently released game that makes your list of all-time favorites?

Matthew Porter

Divinity is Larian's pitch for the Baldur's Gate license. Hitman is IOI's pitch for the 007 license. What other game or series would be the perfect pitch to tackle an existing license? I would love to see Remedy use Alan Wake as their pitch to tackle a game set in the Fargo universe--a solid blend of action, investigation, and the surreal. Think about it, talk about it.

I played Metal Gear Rising Reveangance recently because it had been on my backlog forever. It was absolutely amazing (shout out to Jacob Geller for his efforts in making that clear). It was right up my alley both in terms of gameplay and satire, but I put it off for a long time because I haven't played any other Metal Gear games. What games are currently in your backlog that you know are likely right up your alley, but you have been putting off?

Luca Alberti

Hello crew! In a recent Reddit AMA a developer behind Prince of Persia The Lost Crown was asked what other IP they would like to turn in a Metroidvania, to which the dev responded Splinter Cell would be cool. Now it's up to you, what dormant franchise (not just from Ubisoft) will you bring back to life as a Metroidvania?

Mike Lynch

Is SEGA Jurassic Park the only action/adventure video game with dinosaurs in it where you don't kill them?

Is it true that Ben used to be known by the nickname "Big Poops" Hanson in his GI days and what's the epic tale behind this?

What’s the difference between cabinets and cupboards?

whats a dream hobby you'd want to get into but don't have enough time or money? Mine is FPV drone piloting.

I'm very curious to hear takes on the Indiana Jones trailer, but I haven't seen it yet and you, in the future, have! So, like... did they pull it off?

Hello MinnMax, new patron here! Now that this year's GOTY season has wrapped up, I've noticed an interesting phenomenon: the awards for 2022 and 2023 were largely won by studios whose previous games were pretty niche before having their most recent game explode into new levels of critical and commercial success. Even though From Software and Larian have been industry darlings for some time, I think it's safe to say that Elden Ring and Baldur's Gate 3 represent a significant boost in widespread acclaim for both studios. And perhaps the most interesting part: they both achieved this by doubling down on their studio's signature formula rather than watering it down! I've been wondering about the panel's thoughts on this question: Which studios, if any, do you think are poised to make a similar jump to consensus-GOTY status with their next game? (Include the following if you want my take) I think Monolith Soft is in a similar position to Larian pre-Baldur's Gate 3. Like Divinity: Original Sin, Xenoblade is a series that everyone acknowledges is good but few actually commit to playing. The studio's formula of mind-bending and tearjerking storylines with imaginative open world environments feels like it should resonate with a lot more players than it currently does. And with their next title presumably releasing on a more powerful console and the series' current storyline wrapped up, it feels like the stage is set. Fingers crossed for Kelsey!

Mason Parker

Hey yall! I have been at home with the kids for a long weekend, and saw Psychonauts on GamePass, which I have never played. Let me tell you, wow does that game hold up! My question is, is the second game just more of the same, or is it worth playing right when I get done with the first? Should I give myself some time between so I dont burn myself out, or will I enjoy everything I've been enjoying even more because it's newer?

Joe Carney

Yakuza 8: Infinite LADs and Final Fantasy 7 Disc 2 are coming out a month apart. Is it possible to do two 100+ hour game Deepest Dives at the same time? Which of my babies do you plan to kill?

Jerry Young

Hi minnmax! Would love your thoughts on the last of us 2 casting for season 2 and how you think is best to format the season? Thanks!

thejjuan1

Hello minnmax. Been playing Persona 3 Portable in preparation of the remake next month. This will be my third time replaying this game. Question to the group is how often you replay games? And what you believe is your most replayed game of all time? For me it’s Ratchet and Clank up your arsenal with 29 playthoughs.

Are your guys garbage disposal "insinkerator" brand too? I feel like there's a garbage disposal monopoly going on that no one notices. At least around me

Aging_Poorly

Happy New Year guys! Everybody's making 2024 predictions, but I want to hear your predictions for the whole back half of the 2020s. What gaming trend is going to dominate? Lootboxes and battle royales have fallen off a bit, VR still hasn't taken off and doesn't look too promising. So what's going to define gaming over the next few years?

SuperCerberus

Have you ever thought about the fact that so many words are compound words but we’ve become so accustomed to hearing them that we don’t think of them as compound words? Or am I just fascinated by the stupidest stuff? They’re so literal, too. A windshield is just a shield from the wind. My favorite is pineapple - an “apple” that looks like a pine cone. If nothing else, I hope English major Janet gets a kick out of this.

Beau Bakken

So last week you all were gushing over Red Dead 2's visuals and it reminded me of something. I'm a painter and ever since Skyrim I've thought It'd be fun to make physical canvas paintings of landscapes from games. Maybe Haley knows the answer to my upcoming question. Can I legally sell original paintings copied from a screen grab from a videogame? p.s. missed joke opportunity: Last week Leo said something like "Brian Schea from Jame Informer. It seems like the funnier quip would be Sheame Informer.

Seabass

Hey ‘Horts! With 2023 being such a banger of a gaming year (speaking strictly about game releases, not the state of the industry!), what could realistically happen in 2024 to top it as potentially the “best year in game history”?

Sam Kennedy

Last week y’all were talking about Switch games with weird controls, but nobody brought up the king of weird controls Nintendo Labo! I got a few Labo sets on sale a few years ago and had a great time with them. Engaging with Labo really felt like “play” in a way not many games are able to capture. How do you think Labo will be remembered? Do you wish it had more time in the sun?

CptCobblePot

Greetings Minnmaxers, How would you occupy your time with a bad year in gaming? (i.e low quality games and little output). For me I would just coast through my backlog and try to read some more books.

Dusty Beaman

Good day MinnMax and especially Jeff M."What are some games that have been announced and forgotten that you wish would have come out?" Jeff M says Elden Ring and to play the tape back 3 years from now & Ben promised to play it back when Elden Ring wins all the game awards for 2021. Why didn't the clip get played for 2022? Why doesn't Jeff M get more appropriate levels of shame for his insistence that Elden Ring was never coming out? Please play the clip from The MinnMax Show on 09/16/2020 near the 1:39:10 mark and discuss.

Hello! With the new Prince of Persia game launching this week, I was reminded of how me and my best friend played through the Sands of Time trilogy together. We would pass the controller back and forth each time we died, helping each other solve puzzles until we conquered the game. It was a really great way to enjoy those games! My question - Is there a game or game series you have fond memories of playing through and experiencing with a friend or significant person in your life? Did it make the experience better than if you would have played through it solo?

Travis in Fargo

I’ve really been getting into tea lately. What’s your stance on tea - your “tea pose,” if you will 🧐

SuperThisWay

What’s your favorite off brand game? An example would be like if you don’t like RPGs at all but you like sea of stars or something along those lines

henrik mortensen

Hallo Why does the video game industry have much more demand and craving for sequels than the movie industry? People are always wondering when Half-Life 3, Bloodborne 2 and Banjo Threeie will come out and a video game series is never completely dead. While in the movie industry it is different. Back to the future 4, Godfather 4, The Departed 2, no one expects that. While a Last of us 2 just had to come out apparently.

During the Two Tens discussion, Haley suggested the name "Foamers" for games that weren't quite at the "Bubblers" territory. This made me laugh because I work in rail, and "foamer" is an old pejorative term for train enthusiasts, since they get so excited when they see trains that they "foam at the mouth." I guess with Foamstars coming out there's a good chance we'll see "foamers" used in a gaming context again, but it will always make me think of someone who's really into trains.

Caleb Giovannelli

Hello minimal minions of maximal fortitude! Background music in video games is kind of weird, yeah? It got me thinking, what would your preferred background music be in real life? Would it vary based on different locations? Answers can be any kind of music, though it would be cool to see the correlations between video game music and real life.

Zae

Hey cohorts, Have you ever geared up for an incoming game by playing other similar games in the franchise, just to burn yourself out before the game even comes out? I say this because I’m relatively early in persona 5 Royal, and I’ve been really excited to play Persona 3 reload after I beat Royal. But if history has taught me anything, I like to burn out on games I’m playing. Playing botw again before totk. Mw2 multiplayer before mw3. Anyways, I know your job doesn’t quite give you the opportunity to burn out on a game, but does that ever come to mind?

Joshua Ayers

Dear January's fresh new you's, how loud are your footsteps? Do people swear in surprise when you try to start a conversation? Or maybe they just don't like me. Happy increasingly-less-new year!

bizkiut (Nick S.)

Hey CLCs, Is Taylor Swift's Eras Tour the greatest work of art of all time? Nick S.

Bob Buel

Who would win in a Chess game - you? Or the protagonist of the last videogame you played?

Patrick Hughes

Ahoy good folks of MinnMax. We all essentially know the origins of Metroidvania to which the two series have spawned its own massively popular genre. If you could mash-up two other game series to form a new genre, what would they be?

Ariel in Seattle

Metroidvanias: do you prefer to play on handheld or the big screen?

RabidLime

which controller is the best?

RabidLime

what personal possession have you owned the longest?

Travis in Fargo

If you had to guess (and you do!), what 2024 video game do you THINK you’ll put the most hours into?

NonProfessionalz

Hey Minnmax crew! First time, long time. Which comes to mind first when you hear the word "ship"? A spaceship or a nautical ship?

LlorchDurden

Golden Sun games just hit NSO GBA! Maybe I'm old already or they were bigger here in EU but these were THE games to get on top of Pokemon if you had a GBA back in the day. It's been always weird Nintendo didn't bring them up as a remaster / remake AFAIK until now. any comments on this? NS+ to revisit Golden Suns? ^^

Tommy Carver-Chaplin

Hey CLCs. It's time to lock in your prediction for MinnMax's GOTY for 2024. What are you each picking?

DrewDrew

you're making a game as a team and have to come to a consensus on one very important thing; where do you put the subtitles option? Audio, Video, Gameplay menu?

HaulingGas

Hey Ben 10 and the ten Bens, Simple question. Will VR ever be saved from obscurity? If so, who do you think could be the one to save it?

Evin Watson

This weekend I will dedicating 12 hours of my time and that of five friends for my first game of Twilight Imperium a complex but well regarded table top game. With job, kids, and the other realities of this time of my life and that of my friends, it was no small scheduling task. Especially since I am asking my partner keep herself and the kids out of the house for 12 hours. As all of this came together I thought to myself “I am finally old enough to spend all day playing a board game”. This is an odd counterintuitive thought but I wondered if you and the team have ever had that thought, “I am finally old enough to do something indulgent and maybe juvenile” and what that thing was. Also if anyone has played Twilight Imperium, I am eager to hear thoughts and recommendations. Evin from Astoria

BEEFCAKE

I couldn’t think of a question, so I asked AI to come up with a question, and I kept telling it it could do better before it was only spitting out this questions, so I guess this is the best question it could come up with “If you were trapped in a video game world and could choose only one game to live in, which game would you pick and why?” 🎮🌟 Personally, I choose dead or alive extreme beach volleyball. I’m not gonna tell you why.

BetterQuest goal: I started very lightly journaling my interests last year on a monthly basis. This year I'm going to journal everything I'm doing on a weekly basis. I find it helps my memory looking back. Do any of you journal? What tips do you have to stay consistent?

Now that the seal has been broken, for dogs being capable of playing and speedrunning video games with 1985’s Gyromite, what video games would you recommend for a dog to play?

Hi everyone! Am I weird for not being able to just watch YouTube for anything more than a specific purpose like a recipe or game guide? A guy I work with recently told me he doesn’t subscribe to any streamers or even have a TV because he has infinite entertainment on his phone/computer via YouTube. My boyfriend also often watches an hour or so of YouTube before bed, just hoping from video to video on all different topics. I tried to do the same recently, but nothing jumped out and motivated me to click on it after five minutes of scrolling. Obviously MinnMax has a strong YouTube presence, so I wondered if any of the cohorts were like me? What are you all’s YouTube viewing habits like? Thanks!!

Hugo Aguilar

Hey Cohorts, Is anyone else feeling like PlayStations IPs are getting a little stale? I want to say that I adored Horizon Zero Dawn but had no desire to play the second game. Same went with the new Spider-Man. Am I alone in this?

DangerZone

Howdy everyone, I have been completing my first ever semi-hardcore Nuzlocke run in pokemon Violet. For those that aren’t familiar, a Nuzlocke run is a set of rules that make a Pokemon game harder and more personable. The rules I’m using are: 1. if a pokemon faints in battle, it’s dead and can’t be used the rest of the game. 2. There is a level cap, your pokemon can’t level past the next gym leader’s highest pokemon. 3. I can’t only catch 3 pokemon at random after each gym battle. 4. A pokemon can’t be caught more than once. 5. When I defeat an enemy pokemon, I can’t switch my pokemon when given the option. And 6. You have to nickname all your pokemon. It’s been a really fun experience, making me feel like a true trainer bonding with my selection of random mons. So my question is: have you ever set your own rules or limitations to a game that made it a more enjoyable experience? Keep up the hard work!

Plastic_Sinatra

Hey All, I've been playing Spiderman: Miles Morales lately and there is an animation in the game that makes me recoil when I see it. In the game there are items that Miles can pick up and examine. Miles picks up the item by pinching with his thumb and index finger. To flip the item to the other side, he rotates his arm rather than his wrist. While it's not technically anatomically incorrect, there is something deeply uncanny and unsettling about it. Here's an example https://imgur.com/a/aHXLuJG. Have you ever had a small detail be so immersion breaking? If so, when? Thanks for everything!

Hello there MinnMax! With the release of Guitar Hero in Fortnite and singing being far more accessible than playing guitars, do you think we'll ever see the return of singing/karaoke games like Singstar and parts of Rock Band? There's a mic, you're grabbing it, what is MinnMax's best karaoke song of all time?
