I greatly appreciate your sharing your form, gesture and linework sketches, BWS! As someone who is learning the basics of figure drawing myself, may I ask how you learned to draw fat figures?

Aphra. Space Wife. Survivor of Vader

fat figures are hard, I usually try to find the skeleton underneath and then build the shapes on top. It's not easy though and I regularly change my approach depending on what I'm working on

When building your shapes on top of the skeleton, do you expand the proportions of certain volumes? Does the muscular structure play as much an integral role in a foundation for the three-dimensional structure?

Better-With-Salt

When it comes to muscles, not really. I always have a lot of references open, and from what I've noticed through practice is that the bone structure seems to play a much more important role in where the structure comes from than any musculature. The elbow is probably the best example of this. I hope you understand where I'm coming from!

jlixirium

Yes, that does make sense; thank you for expounding! I can definitely see that in the underlying joint structure, sternum, and where the ilium defines the back hip structure.
