So how could a 40-year-old film about a dystopia in which capitalism has run amok and the overreach and militarisation of the police combined with fears of increased automation and the dangers of artificial intelligence possibly be relevant today LOL? Leon and Dan (who selected this one - the best-selling home computer game of the 1980s - for the show) plod and blast through the many versions of Ocean and Data East's side-scrolling interpretation of the 1987 violent, dystopian movie classic.Music featured in this issue:1. RoboCop (OST Arcade) - Suggestion (Title) by Hiroaki Yoshida/Hitomi Komatsu/Hiroyuki/Basil Poledouris (original score)2. RoboCop Gameboy Title Theme by Jonathan Dunnedited by Jay Taylor

Agh, disappointed with myself for not getting round to posting any thoughts on this, but it was certainly one of the better movie tie-ins on home computer. The Amstrad version looked and played great, and that music! I remember using a cheat to access all the levels, I'm fairly sure I could only get to about the third stage without it! Such a cool game though with the scrolling levels, identikit face building and the crosshair "shoot the bad guy in the balls" stage (although it was easier to shoot his arm! Great game.

This game was everything to me and my 7 year old friends, somehow obsessed with a film we would never be allowed to see. As you noted in the issue all part of that peculiar 80s thing of marketing action films with kids toys etc at those who never would have seen the film (legally!) On the subject of the fantastic music I recall there was a fascinating “Sound of Play’ where Ryan dissected the music in great detail. Might give that a relisten after this if those shows are still out there.

The two-way show worked well, especially as you both had a lot to say and gave a lot of insight into the different versions. It felt a lot like the monthly show, just minus angry Jay.

Really enjoyed this episode. Always a nostalgic treat to get two hours covering a game from one of the old extinct British software houses. I hadn’t thought about this game since playing it on the Atari ST 35 years ago. Absolutely dumbfounding how much worse it looks on YouTube now compared to my memories from 1990. Will my son look back at Astro Bot is the same way in a few decades, I wonder?

My ZX Spectrum 48k+ was my first ever computer and my first experience of games. Robocop was my first ever new game for the system. I loved it so much and did manage to complete it. Not a guarantee for me with games back then. I had to use an invincibility cheat on Batman 89 the following year, just to get off the first level. But Robocop will forever live in my memory as my first big amazing game. Now I must stop looking on EBay at ‘the Spectrum’ system and usb sticks full of games, as I’m sure going back would only disappoint. Amazing episode. Thanks.
